AW: [gep-ed] Climate Strikes

2019-10-08 Thread Heike Böhler
Dear GEP colleagues,

The youth climate movement has been a topic on this mailinglist several times
in the last week (thank you, Dana, Archi and Aseem for sparking this
discussion!).

I am teaching a climate policy course in the upcoming semester and would like
to include a session on social movements/protests and their impact on climate
policy making. Can you recommend any research (by yourselves or by others) on
this topic which allows bachelor-students to get a first introduction and an
overview over the topic? Texts that allow to spark discussions in class are
also very welcome. I am interested in more general research analyzing whether
and how such movements can influence public policy making as well as in more
recent work on the current climate protests and their potential influence.

I am sure there is a lot of expertise on this mailinglist on this topic and I
am looking forward to your suggestions.

Please answer me directly to boeh...@pg.tu-darmstadt.de
<mailto:boeh...@pg.tu-darmstadt.de> , I will compile all answers and send them
around after a week or so.

All the best,

Heike

Re: [gep-ed] Climate Strikes: which problem conceptions?

2019-09-30 Thread Cashore, Benjamin
Dear Archi and the GEP-Ed community,

I also look forward to reading this! Just how to connect social science to
problem solving is a great topic, especially when we know that social movements
are often part of complex processes that sometimes can unleash transformative
policy change – but not always in purely predictive ways.

In this regard, I have been involved in a number of collaborative reflexive
efforts recently that ponder whether scholarly communities, including political
science and even professional environment schools, may not only be useful for
helping ameliorate environmental problems, but might have, inadvertently,
contributed to them.

Here is at talk at ICPP4 I gave on this topic in Montreal in June.

https://www.ippapublicpolicy.org/teaching-ressource/a-plea-to-fundamentally-change-in-thinking-about-solving-the-global-climate-crisis/13<https://nam05.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ippapublicpolicy.org%2Fteaching-ressource%2Fa-plea-to-fundamentally-change-in-thinking-about-solving-the-global-climate-crisis%2F13&data=02%7C01%7Cbenjamin.cashore%40yale.edu%7C9851174d29a7495aa67408d745ca6f71%7Cdd8cbebb21394df8b4114e3e87abeb5c%7C0%7C0%7C637054608057241201&sdata=4XT3s9zGpBKlmpdq%2BF5il%2FdJjCS8xD4VY5b%2BC4ixkN4%3D&reserved=0>

I recognize that this is an awkward conversation to have, to be sure, but I
think given we all share a sense of urgency, this is an appropriate time to
address, and reflect on, these questions.

Le me also recognize that all of us in the gep-ed community come from
honourable places. I also take it as given that we all appreciate, benefit
from, and embrace, reflexivity.

Steven Bernstein and I are currently revising a paper that fleshes out the Type
1, 2, 3 and 4 policy conception points in the talk, so am happy to send a
revised draft to those would like to see it when we complete latest round of
revisions. (Many of you have already provided thoughtful feedback on previous
versions including a paper at last year’s ISA).

Most happy to receive any critiques or reflections you might have.

Best

Ben
