SGI 1.1.29 build fails on Gimp-Perl what to do??

2000-11-24 Thread Avi Bercovich

hello all ;-)

not really a core gimp devel/debug issue, but pretty frustrating just the
same. 1.1.29 seems to build fine up to the point that it hits the perl
extension. I;ve compiled & installed all the various PDL, Parse::Rec
Descent, Gtk+-Perl stuff etc. and .configure goes through the motions just
fine when configuring it. Here's the make output:

my analysis is that SGI default perl (5.004_4) is missing some stuff that
Gimp::Perl needs. I don't think it has anything to do with the various
Perl modules I installed (all of which compiled/installed flawlessly). Am
I correct?? If so is there some patch I can apply so that I wont need to
install perl 5.005 into /usr/freeware?? I read in the ChangeLog of
Gimp::Perl that some workarounds for 5.004 had been submitted...

BTW. I'm no perl coder myself, so I haven;t the foggiest idea where to
start 'problem solving' on this one.

kind regards,

avi

PS. versions used:

perl5 (5.0 patchlevel 4 subversion 4) (SGI default)

PDL 2.1.1 (no slatec, no gsl, no fftw)
RecParseDescent 1.66
Data-Dumper-2.101
File-Spec-0.82
Gtk-Perl-0.7000 (gtk only, no gnome)

GNU Make version 3.79.1
gcc version 2.95.2

Expert fonts - are there known problems??

2000-09-26 Thread Avi Bercovich

Hi All,

I've converted some Mac fonts with t1unmac from the t1utils package to the
endianness of my x86 PC, and am seeing strange behaviour in the GIMP.

Basically some do and some don't work. In particular one font which has
expert features like hanging numbers and small caps etc. completely
crashes GIMP - it simply disappears with out a trace. No debug monitor -
nothing.

I'm going to do some more tests with this font today, in StarOffice and
maybe blender, but maybe someone has seen this behaviour too??

The font is Utopya, it's a real adobe release and not some cheap shareware
rip-off effort. Other fonts of equal pedigree convert flawlessly.

any pointers??

kind regards,

avi bercovich

I've just taken a job as a 'new media designer' at an established design
company where Macs hold sway - all the way. I;m the only guy that uses
Unix (GNU/Linux) on the desktop and I use GIMP as my main app. So yes, you
can use GIMP as your main app in a RealWorld(tm) 'there's money on the
line here' environment.

The GIMP as an application has all of the functionality you need to do
work for with bitmapped images for screen/on-line presentation. and does a
presentable job in other fields too. It is still weak for heavy duty
Pre-Press. I refer you to the usenet archives for the whole scoop on that
issue. However, GIMPs scriptability is _way_ beyond anything else out
there I;ve used. But I really do think that there are some interface
issues that need to be adressed at some point. Probably in the 2.0
development cycles. Mainly the operations for grouping/tagging and
selecting layers need an update. Also the selection/marquee tools need a
look. But GIMP 1.2.xx is in feature freeze now, so I'll keep my fingers
crossed for 2.xx. As it is I'm really thankful to the GIMP developers
that I can do what I;m doing now on GNU/Linux because of GIMP and not have
to use MS Windows or MacOS... Big Respect!!

But I've had to invest a bit of time to get the unix environment fully
integrated into the workflow here. Mainly read/writing psd and reading
apple fileshares and other stuff like java clients for scheduling and
projectmanagement, or vmware to run those pesky ms-windows clients...

If you're not comfortable in getting the nitty gritty unix file sharing
stuff or GIMP patching for psd write-capability sorted, ON YOUR OWN (since
no resident Mac-head will be able to help you with much) then I wouldn;t
even try to use GIMP as your main app.

It's not the GIMP - but your environment & workflow that's the problem.

just my 0.02.

Can we expect some type of grouping and other layer management stuff
implemented by then ;-) Getting to GDynText layer nr. 12398765 in a
linear list could be pretty frustrating.

Sorry chaps, couldn't resist...

grts & keep up the good work - it is hugely appreciated,

Bugs?? on IRIX...

Oops.. I'm still on a 10 day old 1.1.14 CVS...

Sorry chaps, just had to chip with my 0.02 worth too.

Here, here. Even better would be some kind of merge of Guash with the file
dialog. Especially for those of us that are running GIMP seperate from
GNOME.

as has been noted by glyph lefkovitz, that that's very personal. But I
think a function that would allow the grouping/ungrouping of layers would
be a super great incredibly huge megariffic improvement. And how about
including a compile-time or gimprc setting for removal/hiding of the
layers-dialog close btn?? Pretty Please?? The only time I've ever used it
was when I've mis-clicked the other buttons at the bottom of the layers
dialog.

adjusting the gamma of the image works really well for me. Maybe the print
dialog should offer some 'standard' gamma settings.

And yes, I'd try and code my comments myself but tcl/tk doesn't get you
very far in core-gimp. Sorry.

kind regards & keep up the good work - it's _much_ appreciated,
