problem for some time.

This has been corrected and the build is restarted, so the current
content from the gimp-help master branch should be present now.

I've reschedules the builds to happen at at 00:23, 08:23 and 16:23 GMT
every day. They write a short log file to
https://docs.gimp.org/2.10/build.log

I've also extended the build to the actual website contents - that is
the index.html and some other pages.

This build runs every 10 minutes and rebuilds only if there are changes
present. Its log file is at https://docs.gimp.org/web-build.log

https://docs.gimp.org will now properly direct visitors to the 2.10
online help instead of the 2.8 version, and 2.10 does have up-to-date
content.

P.S. I've also run make dist manually and got a tarball out of this -
it's at https://download.gimp.org/pub/gimp/help/gimp-help-2.10.0.tar.bz2

Any feedback to whether this tarball is suitable for distro and/or
installer packages would be helpful.

Re: [Gimp-docs] Options in blur filters

2018-11-14 Thread Julien Hardelin

Eureka!

"entire layer" does not mean all the pixels of the layer, but only
selection + the rest of the layer. Actually, this option works on
selection border and uses near pixels in the rest of the layer to create
the color of border squares, probably to create a gradual transition
between the selection and the rest of the layer.

[Gimp-docs] Options in blur filters

2018-11-07 Thread Julien Hardelin

Hi all,

In several blur filters, we have the options "Use the selection as
input" and "Use the entire layer as input".

I don't understand well these options. If I test "Use the entire layer
as input" in Pixelize with a selection, I can see some slight
differences in result, but I don't find, in result, colors that are in
the layer outside the selection.

In my mind, in Pixelize, the color of a pixel is the mean of colors in
the square it belongs to, and "use the entire layer as input" looks weird.

Can you enlighten me on this point?

Is this "alpha" a term related to statistics or to transparency ? I
can't built an example of this option.

By default, the Median Blur filter finds the median value at the
neighborhood of each pixel. In spite of its name, the filter can
actually find *any* arbitrary percentile, not just the median (i.e., the
50th percentile). The "Percentile" parameter controls the percentile
used for the color components, and the "Alpha percentile" parameter
separately controls the percentile used for the alpha component. In
other words, "alpha" is related to transparency in this context.

To see the effect of this parameter, you need an image with transparency
-- if the alpha channel is opaque everywhere, the result will also be
fully opaque, regardless of the percentile. Much like the color
"Percentile" parameter, for which lower values shift the image toward
darker tones and higher values toward brighter ones, lower values for
the "Alpha percentile" parameter shift the image toward more
transparency, and higher values shift the image toward more opacity,
where a value of 50% is balanced. Roughly speaking, values less than
50% make the opaque regions of the image smaller, while values greater
than 50% make the opaque regions of the image larger.

In addition there's often a mix of light sources (a window, a fill-in

If I remember correctly (I did not build gimp-help-2 for several years),

This should be set by default unless

Hi,

In Blend tool, what are midpoints?

Normally, the midpoint of an interval can be found by finding the
half-way point of each of the x and y values of the 2 points that define
the interval.

In Blend tool, midpoint often is not at center of gradient segment,
between two stops (and there is an option to place it at center).

How to explain what midpoint is, here?

Docbook is useful as a reference. In usual workflow, you will find many

Many chapters have to be updated (sometimes for only a few words),

Also when you have built the html files of the work in progress, you
will find a What's new in GIMP-2.10 section. And browsing the Web for
gimp-2.9, you will find several What's new in.

But the main way is to compare gimp-2.9.6 step by step with the help

Hi Morgan and welcome aboard!

I'm the Italian translator of the manual, so please forgive my bad
English. The GIMP manual is written in docbook-xml, and converted
by the
source code present in its repository in PDF and HTML. The strings are
automatically extracted by a series of very smart scripts and
Makefiles
into .po files (see the gettext docs) for the use of us -translators-.
Translated strings are then riconverted into docbook by means of
the same
scripts to obtain the different languages versions of the docs. The
mechanism is very smart. In this way translators can focus on the
translation and every small modification or update in the original
source
text will automatically transmitted to the translations in the form of
marked strings to update/translate.

It is very important to understand the mechanism and keep it
working to
permit to translators to work.

Docbook permits also to have "anchors" in the text that make the
"context
help" through the pressing of the F1 key work inside GIMP.

Hope this help you clarify matter...

Regards,

[Gimp-docs] MyPaint brushes

2017-06-28 Thread Julien Hardelin

Hi all,

I can't install MyPaint brushes:

I downloaded 2 MyPaint brushes packages, unziped them and copied-pasted
all files into /usr/share.gimp/2.0/brushes (or into a new MyPaint
folder, or into the Legacy folder). Then I clicked on the Refresh
brushes button in the Brush selection dialog.

But Mypaint brushes are not installed.

Please, can you explain me how to install these brushes.

The Abyss option of Warp Transform Tool has four choices

On a non-alpha layer, Abyss None fills blank outer area of
deformed layer with the original content. For other choices

Re: [Gimp-docs] Colors/Desaturate/Desaturate documentation

2017-03-26 Thread Julien Hardelin

In a tutorial, we use only some features of a dialog.

Gimp-help menus are not tutorials. They are references, and so, each
feature of a dialog must be described. Some are common to several
commands; they can be grouped in a common-features file.

You can't leave the Advanced option unexplained; you must explain, as
you did here, why you can't develop explanations nor give an example. Or
what will users think?

In your file, we don't see that Luminance, Luma... belong to Mode.

No, it is not necessary to do more about these Mode options: "Five
options are available " is enough

If the above means that there should be documentation for the five
Modes and *also* for "Advanced options/Apply filter to the layer's RAW
pixels", I don't think adding documentation for "Advanced options
Apply filter to the layer's RAW pixels" to the desaturate help (or any
other help page for a specific editing option) is a good idea.

Just one example wouldn't do as it would be misleading. Between the
gamma hack and the "color managed" option there are four possible
combinations for the user to choose among, for each desaturate mode:

* The precise effect of each combination of "mode+using or not using
the advanced options" does vary depending on whether the operation in
question requests linearized RGB or RGB encoded using the sRGB TRC. So
for example the effect when choosing Luminance is different from the
effect when using Luma.

*The precise effect also varies depending on whether the image is at
"linear" or "perceptual" precision.

* It seems, though I'm not 100% certain, that the effect also depends
on whether there has been any previous "making of a new profile from a
pre-existing non-GIMP-built-in profile", which in turn depends on
whether the image had an embedded linear gamma ICC profile and whether
the image has been promoted to 32f with linear precision and then
possibly back to gamma precision, and on whether the user has chosen
to automatically promote to 32f in Preferences.

In other words, accurately explaining the possible results from using
the Advanced Color Options in the Desaturate dialog would require a
flow chart in order to explain what happens when using which
combination of the Advanced Color Options given X current precision, Y
previous precision changes and Z original non-sRGB embedded ICC
profile, combined with the choice amongst the various modes for
converting to black and white that the user has made.

I'd very much prefer to not create such a flow chart, especially since
the code for the relevant factors affecting the outcome of any given
set of choices+previous-precision-changes is still in a state of flux.

Better is the command: yelp file=///path-to-the source-xml-file.xml

- All elements of a dialog must be described, even if they look evident,
because they might not be evident for some users: function, what are
they useful for?

I think that this could be a good starting point:

Re: [Gimp-docs] make broken?

I can't reproduce it (I tried it with git archive instead of
git clone, but this shouldn't make a difference). Both make-3.81 and
make-3.82 worked fine.

Which command did you try? Just make?
I get the error with gimp-help-2 on 2 different hard disks: the new
sandbox under opensuse-12.1, the old sandbox under opensuse-11.4. You
should get the same error after git pull and autogen...

I tried make alone, and also make validate-en with the same result.

Does make --debug give some useful information?

No, it only gives the error. No more information.

Does it work with make -r?

No, it gives the error.

/~/gimp-help-2 make -r

Do you get the same result with the attached Makefile?

No, I get this:

/~/gimp-help-2 make

Making po/de/foo.po (pot/foo.pot)
Making pot/bar/baz.pot
Making po/de/bar/baz.po (pot/bar/baz.pot)

[Gimp-docs] make broken?

2012-02-26 Thread Julien Hardelin

Hi,

In a new sandbox,, after autogen.sh, make gives the errors:

/Makefile:496: xml/en,/.deps.mk: No file or folder of this type
Makefile:496: xml/fr/.deps.mk: No file or folder of this type
Makefile:1220: ***Mixing implicit and static rules for the pattern. Stop.
/(messages translated)

In an old sandbox, before git pull, make runs normally. After git pull
and autogen, I get the same errors.

There must be something broken in make.
