I'd go to the IDimager preferences and see if it is possible to
change the word gimp to gimp-remote where applicable.

That is not going to work as there's no gimp-remote on Windows. The
standard installer ships with a tool called gimp-win-remote though. This
tool, which is not maintained by the GIMP developers, has similar
functionality.

BTW, on a modern Linux desktop that has support D-Bus you don't need
gimp-remote any longer. The functionality is built into the main gimp
executable then.

[Gimp-user] Opening files in Gimp2.4x from 3rd party, thumbnail viewer

2008-01-04 Thread Peter Taylor
Hi,
Thanks to all who pointed me to gimp-remote to prevent multiple
instances of Gimp when opening files from third party thumbnail viewers.
I downloaded the Windows version, which requires the following registry
entry to be added:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\GNU\gimp-win-remote]
@=gimp-2.4.exe
(as described in the Readme file.)

It now works perfectly with both IDimager and Fastone image viewer.

I appreciated the lightning fast responses!

2008-01-04 Thread Alexander Rabtchevich
Thank you for the tip, it works. And the document
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/imgeditor.htm adds information how to make
GIMP default picture editor:
 * Click Start, Run and type CONTROL FOLDERS
 * Select the File Types tab
 * Select the image file type from the listing (e.g. jpg), and click
the Advanced button. If it is not available, click restore defaults first.
 * Create a new action by clicking New
 * In the Action text box, type Edit
 * In the Application used to perform action box, type the full path
to the image editor application. Just copy/paste the correspondent
strings from Edit with GIMP entry.
 * Click OK, OK to close the dialog
If you had to restore settings, edit Open key to the viewer you like.
Now if GIMP has been loaded, pressing F4 in XnView opens the image in
GIMP. :)

Sweet! I guess I'll have to try that. Is there an advantage in using
the d-bus method over gimp-remote?

[Gimp-user] Opening files in Gimp2.4x from 3rd party thumbnail viewer

2008-01-02 Thread Peter Taylor
Hi,
I use a photo cataloging program called IDimager as a 'front end' for
Gimp. This program displays thumbnails of the complete directory (with
star ratings, etc.), and is a very convenient way of identifying photos.
Since changing to v2.4, a fresh instance of the Gimp is started for each
new photo that I open. Previously with v2.2x it was a dream.Once it had
opened Gimp for the first picture, from then on it quickly loaded new
photos into the existing instance of Gimp. Now that it opens a fresh
instance of Gimp for each photo, it is obviously slower and uses
excessive system resources.

The only change I have made is going from Gimpv2.2 to v2.4. IDimager
has not been updated. I did not configure v2.2 specially, but wonder if
there is a way to configure v2.4 to behave similarly.

Incidentally, another thumbnail viewer I have used is Faststone
thumbnail viewer. That opened a fresh instance of Gimp with v2.2 as well.

I would appreciate any help - even if it means using a different
thumbnail viewer.

Thanks for any help

Peter Taylor

No idea what exactly IDimage is doing but it probably needs to be
updated for GIMP 2.4 then.

Or perhaps IDimage can call gimp-remote instead of gimp? If that doesn't
work one could make gimp a link to gimp-remote. As far as I know it
behaves like gimp when no other instance of GIMP is running.
