[Gimp-user] gimp slider signal

2012-02-18 Thread Yeon Jin (Grace) Lee

Hello,

I have a question about gimp slider. Currently, I send off a signal at
every value change. However, I would like to send a signal from the
slider only when I release the mouse click. Could anyone tell me a
signal to put as argument to g_signal_connect for the slider?

Thanks,

G. L.

Eventually you will get to gimp-developer
gimp-developer-l...@gnome.org which is the right mailing list for
such questions :)

[Gimp-user] Short cut [ and ]

2012-02-18 Thread TheoN
Dear developers,
There is short cut missing in the new version 6.2.12
In version 2.6.11 you can change the scale of brushes by using ] to enlarge or
[ decrease the size of the brush.
It would be nice if this came back in the next version therefore I turn back to
version 6.2.11.
It's a very handy tool.
However I look forward to the new version 2.8 the developers did a very good
job.
The link
http://libregraphicsworld.org/blog/entry/what-hasnt-happened-to-gimp-2.8
impressed me for the new appications.
Many thanks for this.
Regards Theo

Hey Theo,

I don't know if this is relevant to your use case, but one of my
favorite should be a default features is the ability to use the
normally unassigned alt + mouse wheel combination to scale brushes.
Since [ and ] are usually right-handed gestures, most users will
like not having to let go of their mouse to change their brush
size. Configuration, illustrated:

:o)

Steve

Thanks a lot Steve,
I have installed the version 6.2.12 again installed over the previous version
and now the short key [ and ] does work again.
I don't know the reason for this, but every thing it’s OK now.
The illustration of the mouse in combination is a different content in my Dutch
version, but I see this can be modified.
It's very useful.
Best regards Theo

Right, it's not like these new-fangled standards like HTML5 can
possibly have any positive effect on a user's experience. Let's all
cripple our work in an effort to support old, unmaintained, insecure
browsers. In fact, we should ENCOURAGE users to continue using old,
unmaintained, insecure browsers. It's the only responsible thing to
do.

Good plan!

New, interactive features? Who needs 'em?!?

Are you by any chance referring to five kinds of CSS3 gradients that
have to be put to a styles file so that it's supported across browsers
for sure? ;-)

If you were a supporter of the Any Browser Campaign
(http://www.anybrowser.org/campaign/) you shouldn't have to write
alternate style sheets. When I did a redesign of my website
several years ago I tested my pages using Netscape 7.2 and 8,
FireFox 1.5 and 2.0, Opera 9, Blazer 4.0 (the browser on my PDA),
and even Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6. The different browsers
showed some errors in the layout. I was able to fix all the issues
after some adjustments to the style sheets. The pages then looked
the same (except due to minor variation in fonts available to the
web browser) without any checks anywhere that looked for a
 specific browser.

If you are using some fancy features on a web page it may not be
as easy to have the same level of compatability across multiple
browsers on multiple operating systems without some conditional
code but the amount of browser specific checks should be kept to a
 minimum.

Actually I use semantic markup via standards compliant xhmtl 1.0 and
CSS 2.1. As an example, the pages in my silly little personal site
look and work the same in Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Safari, Epiphany,
Konqueror, Midori and IE8. I did not have to tweak anything to
accomplish that level of cross browser compatibility - that's what
W3C Standards are for and, thank God, Microsoft has finally
capitulated and the browser wars are over.

I use a few alternate CSS declarations in an auxiliary style sheet
to correct rendering errors in IE6, because some people are still
using it, and the way IE6 is broken affects the main navigation
menu. Those are the only IE6 errors I bother to correct.

Visitors to the site who are using IE6 or 7 are greeted by a
security warning and upgrade link on every page, wrapped in a
conditional comment whose contents are only visible on the offending
browsers.

should not be too difficult to access the File menu and select Save As
and see what formats are available.

But I cannot answer about like photoshop, have never used it and do not
own an operating system which will support it. I would rather spend the
$600 for glass for my cameras.

I can't speak for 2.6 but the 2.7 version allows you to export to pdf

Probably not like Photoshop but here are two ways:

1. Easy as in simple: Save your image as a .ps file. (That's
postscript.) Then convert the .ps file to .pdf via the ps2pdf
terminal command, i.e.:

ps2pdf example.ps example.pdf

ps2pdf is part of the GhostScript package, versions should be
available for most operating systems.

2. Easy as in all-gui on Windows: Install PDFCreator, and print
your image to PDF - this will appear as an option when you select a
printer from the ones installed on the system.

I believe MAC systems can natively print to PDF, but don't quote me
on that.

Um, on second thought, I have been playing with this and it is
giving me cat fits. The GIMP's Postscript files are fine, but
apparently ps2pdf, at least the version installed on my system, does
not like arbitrary dimensions, and gives me an image cropped as IT
dang well pleases as a pdf output.

So, here's another e-z gui option, probably better than any I
suggested earlier:

Save your image as a .png file. Open it with Inkscape, making sure
the embed option is selected. Do a Save As, select the PDF
format, name the output file with the correct extension, and hit the
go button.

This should work on all platforms. If it does not, make sure you
have GhostScript installed - you also need it to import .pdf files
to the GIMP.

If you do not already have Inkscape, congratulations, now you can
play with vector files! Don't miss Inkscape's File Import from
Open Clip Art Library command - tons of free images that are
flexible and adaptable in every sense of the word.
