Yes, Gimp is free open-source software, with no strings attached. You
can do whatever you want with it, including resell it.

Re: [Gimp-user] How to highlight regions of an image

2021-10-09 Thread Guy Stalnaker via gimp-user-list
David,

The technique appears to rely on GIMP's Layers. That's where the the mode
in question will be. So, where is that? Here is an image of the main GIMP
screen (Windows install) with arrows pointing to the Layers "dock" -
usually by default on the right side of the GIMP layout - and the Mode
selection dropdown menu:

A mode does nothing on a single layer. They require a minimum of two. The
selected mode performs (yes, really) a mathematical calculation pixel by
pixel between the two layers with the result of the calculation what you
see. Here's a screen shot with a new white layer added, and the Mode menu
activated with arrows showing where Multiply is:

Modes are very useful. And frankly knowing the calculation performed is
less useful than simply playing with them to see what happens when various
modes are selected. Here are links for some web pages that explain modes
you may find useful (don't worry if the website talks about Photoshop, etc.
because blending modes are somewhat uniform across applications):

And how do I do that? I notice that when I click on the highlighted
region, the decorations I see on the region alternate every other click.
Otherwise, I see no indication how I can select particular layers.

P.S. One potential issue -- make sure in the Layers Dock that you have
the correct layer selected! Think the first layer is the "base" layer,
and the one with the selection your second layer. The Multiply mode must
be done to the second layer.

David,

archives. If you'll resent to me personally, I'll take a look for you.
My post with the images I attached made it to you, but also did not make
it to the archive (the images are too large I suppose).

Also, what is the URL for the "other page?"

Thanks.

2021-09-22 Thread David Karr via gimp-user-list
(Hopefully this isn't a duplicate. I tried to post this a few minutes ago
a different way, and I think it failed.)

I am a gimp newbie. I don't use it often enough. I'm trying to do something
that I'm certain many people have asked about in the past, but I can't find
this described in a current FAQ.

I found the current page: https://gimplearn.net/viewtopic.php?t=49 , but it
doesn't appear to be up to date with the latest gimp version (which I
installed a few minutes ago). For instance, after copying the foreground
color onto the selection, it talks about setting a "Multiply" layers mode.
I don't see anything like that in the current interface.

What is the current guidance for doing something simple like this?

Hi.

I now had my notebook two times freezing already when editing images in

turning off and on the machine made it work again. I am not sure if this
is in fact an issue with GIMP or it only happened by coincidence.

Doing some research on the web I found that there is supposed to be an

So how can I tell if OpenCL is used and if so, how can I disable it, so
that I can check whether this issue happening is really related to GIMP?

Thank you in advance

Creating your own theme is possible.

Here's an example of the mid-grey theme I created for myself:
https://imgur.com/a/Zs3m8uZ
you're welcome to a copy of it.

I've modified one of the supplied themes, mostly separating out the colour
definitions to make it easier to modify, although several of the UI elements
are defined by images which need to be mangled manually.

There are lots of ways. The easiest first step is to use the
Hue-Saturation dialog (or Hue-Chroma, if you prefer) and drag the
sliders around, especially the Hue slider.

If that doesn't do what you want, another way is:

- make a new layer on top of your image

- fill that layer with a solid color (now you'll only see the color,
but your pattern is still there underneath)

- In the Mode menu in the Layers dialog, go through the whole list
one by one, setting the mode on the solid-color layer and seeing
the effect on the image. (Hint: once you've clicked on the Mode
menu once, it has focus and you can cycle rapidly through the
modes by pressing the down- arrow key).

Of course, the top layer doesn't have to be a solid color. You can
paint different colors on it corresponding to different parts of
your base image, so the same layer mode will turn different parts
of the image different colors. You can get all kinds of surprising
and interesting effects depending on how the top color combines with
the bottom color in different layer modes.

...Akkana

Akkana;

Thanks for the quick response! That first method sounds like
exactly what I want to do. The second one sounds interesting
also. I think I'll try that for some other things I am
considering!

Many Thanks!

The Hugin suggestion is a bit of overkill. All sorts of ways with Gimp and the
resize canvas is one way.

Even easier:

Open the two images as layers - It is better if the largest is opened first but
not necessary.

Click and drag either one of the layers into position. Outside the canvas it
shows as an outline, do not be fooled by that, it is ok.

Use Image menu -> Fit canvas to layers

The easiest way is to install Hugin where you can use the panorama creation
utility to detect the common points and stitch automatically. Note that
stitching two scans is somewhat different from rotating a camera for panoramic
shots, so best to read the tutorial.

Re: [Gimp-user] How to get the positions(x, y) (width, depth) of selected rectangle or selected ellipse

2020-02-17 Thread Ofnuts

If you register your script properly, the Image will be in the function
arguments when the script is called from the menu,
no need to read it out from the title bar.

Also, you can avoid a lot of back-slashing by either:

- Using "raw" notation for string literals:

    file_name = r'c:\Users\YourName\Documents\Temp\SampleXcfCsv.txt'

- Using triple quoting:

file_name='''c:\Users\YourName\Documents\Temp\SampleXcfCsv.txt'''

- Using forward slashes, that work just as well (the Windows API
understands both types, it's just the command-prompt parser
that insists on backslashes):

file_name="c:/Users/YourName/Documents/Temp/SampleXcfCsv.txt"

Uh? You can write to a file from the script, using the regular I/O
functions.

For more structured data you can also use the built-in CSV module to
write CSV files, and it is also possible to add excel support to the
python runtime.

See, 'gimp-selection-bounds' at Procedure Browser.
But, handning values to external App is not so easy.
If you add external library 'pyperclip' you can write to clipboard.
But it is one value only... Yes, maybe, not suit for you.
One solution is that create text layer about that.
Then you can copy manually.

This is standard behavior. There is no "object selector" tool, object
selection is a side effect of the Move tool, that will pick the topmost
non-transparent layer where you click. But since there are many cases
where one of the topmost layers covers the whole canvas and is at least
partially opaque, this method is not always usable. You can always
select objects by clicking on them in the Layers list.

I want to deform and warp the areas surrounding the selection as I scale it

OK, I figured one thing out how to re-add the dotted line...
1. I selected the rectangle select tool.
2. I drew a rectangle around a section of the dotted line that remained.
3. I did a Copy.
4. I drew another rectangle around an area where I wanted the dotted rectangle,
again using the rectangle select tool.
5. I did a Paste.
6. I adjusted the placement slightly.

This seemed to work. Although I'm not sure this is the "best practice."

Ah, thank you, Michael. By "several" I mean about 6 or 7 files... no big deal.
In most of the files there is only 1 red rectangle.

One thing I forgot to ask... In another image I have (I attached a screen grab
of part of the PDF), there is a dashed or dotted line in the original JPEG. I
would like to "recover" the dashed line upon removal of the red rectangle that
was drawn "above" it; that is, upon removing the red rectangle I would like the
result to show the dashed line as if the red rectangle was never added.

How would I do this? I'm not sure how I would use the technique you suggested
for this case.

Finally, what format do you suggest using other than JPEG?

Trying a very non-complex approach:

Use the color picker tool to pick up the background color, then use the
paint brush with an appropriately sized brush to paint over the rectangle.

For that image, the method above is quite fast, except for the area
around the h in Cheers.

The text in the screenshots shows some sub-pixel hinting artifacts, for
better screenshots it might be wise to turn subpixel hinting off before
taking them, or make sure this is done by grayscale pixels only.

You should specify how many images your "several are", and how many
annotations your are going to remove from each on average.

Also, avoid JPEG for anything but the final exports - using this format
introduces artifacts around every edge, and will complicate your task
needlessly.

[Gimp-user] How to replace foreground with background pixels

2019-11-30 Thread rhimbo
Hello all,

I've tried watching some YouTube tutorials to figure out my problem, and I've
also done some searching but can't quite figure out how to accomplish my goal.
I'm a novice still and part of my problem is that I'm not well-versed in
graphics concepts, so I think I'm not comprehending some of the explanations.

I have several images which are just screen grabs or PDFs. For example, the one
attached is from a PDF which contains annotations (red rectangle). I can import
the PDF as a JPEG, that's no problem.

I'm trying to remove the red rectangle and in its place just have the
"background" that was there before the red rectangle was added.

If someone could just point me in the right direction... a tutorial, part of the
user's guide, whatever, I'm happy to go dive in.

Some of the YouTube tutorials showed adding layers, turning the image to gray
scale or black-and-white, reversing foreground and background, etc. My head was
spinning. They went kinda fast for a novie.

One of these days I'm going to start from the very beginning and learn this
great tool from the perspective of concepts and formal immersion into the
graphics world.

Many thanks in advance...

Your image will only have about 1 million pixels, so that might be a bit
hard to achieve.

[Gimp-user] How to make a 7.5 cm x 2.5 cm image with 1 million spots at 600 dpi

Hello,
I want to make an image with a regular array of 1 million spots that when
printed at 600 dpi measures 7.5 cm by 2.5 cm. The distance between spots should
be the same and spots should be aligned in a square pattern versus offset in a
diamond pattern.
Does someone know how to do this with GIMP?
Thanks in advance,

Use "File>Open as layers" to load the image over the grey background
image. This will likely be faster (and the image will be aligned to the
left).

Or when you have loaded your square image, use "Image>Canvas size", and
increase the width (you can just add "*7/5" at the end of the width,
Gimp will compute the value). Then you add a background layer.

"View>Snap to canvas edges" is also useful to align layers with the
image sides.

What I do:

1. Open image in GIMP
2. Select Image/Canvas Size
3. Enter something like width 700 and height 500 in the size boxes, and then
click the link icon to lock the aspect ratio. Then enter the true height of
your image in the Height box.
4. Use Offset settings or Center button to align your image on the canvas as
required.
5. Choose Resize Layers, All layers. Choose Fill With, Background Colour (or
whatever).
6. Click Resize.

If you want to align a layer with the edges of your canvas, or centre it on the
canvas horizontally or vertically, take a look at the Alignment tool (it’s in
the default toolbox, at least on my OS/X download).

[Gimp-user] How to optimize this workflow

2019-10-17 Thread Scott Jacobs via gimp-user-list
When I go to the drugstore to their self-print stations, I know
that their paper sizes are not the same ratio as my image sizes.
If I don't create special versions of my images, I know that they will
have their ends cut off. This displeases me.

Before I go, I create special versions of the images, that have the same
aspect ratio as the print size. I pad the smaller dimension with white
(the paper color), and center the image, since I am not
planning to cut off the padding after printing the image. (If I were planning
to cut the print down to image size, I would make sure the image was all
the way to the left or right, so I would only need to make one cut).

How do I do this?

First, open the image, and change the zoom factor to make it a smaller
percentage,
so there's lots of padding around the image.
Invoke Rectangle Select, click on Fixed, and enter the aspect ratio of the
print size
as width height (example: for 5x7 paper, enter "7:5") If later, you
find that
you had it backwards, just click on one of the two buttons at the right of that
line,
and the ratio will reverse itself, without need of re-typing.
Now, click and drag anywhere to make a rectangle, of any size. Size and position
doesn't matter (other than allowing you to see if you got the ratio in the
right order).

Now, enter the smaller of the image's width/height in the right box after
"Size".
(LEFT box, if image is in portrait mode).
The dimension in the other box will change to a larger amount.
(If you enter 0 in both Position boxes, you will see the rectangle bounding box
is
the same size as your image, except in one direction, where it is larger.)
You will need this new dimension in the next step, so "copy" it to the
clipboard.

Now, invoke Image->Canvas Size from the main menu.
Paste the new dimension into the Width box (HEIGHT box, if image is in portrait
mode),
and press . The preview box will enlarge in one direction.
At this point, you can either click on Center to center the image in the
preview box,
or you can click and drag the image all the way to one end or the other of the
preview box.
Change Resize Layers from None to All Layers (may not be necessary).
Change Fill With to any of the options you want, and then click on "Resize".

Export the image under a different name (probably something that indicates the
print ratio.)

Done!

[Gimp-user] How to optimize this workflow

2019-10-17 Thread Helmut Jarausch via gimp-user-list
I have a dumb photo lab (which offers very good prints with a new Canon
printer).

They offer prints of size 7in x 5in.
I have several images which are quadratic in size. Now I have to "fill"
my image with a (say) grey area left to it.

Currently I do

I create a new image (filled with grey 868686) with the same height but
a width of height x 7 / 5
I copy paste my image into this new image, move the floating selection
exactly to the left (which is quite tedious to do exactly)

Additionally I'd like to select the remaining grey area at the right to
eventually fill it by inpainting (GMIC).

(Select by color doesn't always work)

Many thanks for some hints,
Helmut

Probably i'd select most of it, feather the selection slightly, float
it, move it upwards, then use a combination of patches and clone tool
with a large brush (or inpainting with the synthesizer plugin) to fill
in the gap. Pay attention to lightness and to shadows, and watch for
the tree in the front. Depends on teh exact effect you want.

There's no OneDrive integration in GIMP, however if you have OneDrive
installed and linked to your account, the files should appear in
C:\Users\\OneDrive (you can just click your username in the Open
dialog to go there directly), where GIMP will be able to open them.

[Gimp-user] How to apply Filters -> Generic -> Erode to a layer?

2019-08-04 Thread Thomas Nyberg via gimp-user-list

Hello,

It's a bit easier to understand my question with an example. If you open
a new image and add in some paint tool "squiggles" (i.e. just draw some
random stuff with the mouse), then you can "thicken" these lines after
they are already in place by using Filters -> Generic -> Erode. If you
click that a few times the lines themselves will spread out a little.
This does as I expect.

Now what I want is for this to work with a layer which I'll explain with
another example. If you create a new image as before, but you also first
select Layer -> New Layer and then use the paint tool to add some little
squiggles. But in this case if you do Filters -> Generic -> Erode,
nothing happens to the lines at all. If I select Layer -> Merge Down and
then run Filters -> Generic -> Erode again, it thickens as expected.

My question is how do I thicken the layer before merging it down? Is
this expected behavior or a bug? Thanks for any help. Yell at me if my
question is confusing.

Cheers,
Thomas

P.S. I'm running GIMP 2.10.8 installed directly from the debian repos
for buster (i.e. debian 10).

Try the following:

- Shrink or grow the selection half the number of steps

It may not be the fastest method but it should work.

Assuming you are using Windows, Why do you expect Gimp to set the functions
provided by the **Windows printer driver** that comes with your printer. Various
printers have various settings, get to know them.

Portrait / Landscape and scaling-to-fit should be provided by whatever printer
make you use. Some examples in screenshots.

However you need to do a little research on printing quality. One of the most
common moans is "my" US Letter size 8.5" x 11" (@ 72 ppi) in Gimp size = 600 x
800 pix and the print quality is terrible.

Because it should be 8.5 x 11" (@ 300 ppi) 2550 x 3300 pix. Gimp is a raster
(bitmap) editor and works in pixels, does not care about inches or millimetres
or...

Say you have that 8.5 x 11 @ 300 ppi image. Want to print to 11" x 17" ? - first
the aspect ratio is different **but** the resolution now becomes 200 ppi. Might
look ok / might not - depends on the image. This for simple advice:

http://blog.spoongraphics.co.uk/articles/a-handy-guide-to-image-resolutions-in-print-design

No good taking that small 600 x 800 pix image and scaling up, it will still look
rubbish. You need to start with the correct image size in **pixels** for
printing.

Want part of an Image: Make a selection -> Selection to new image. Print it, but
be aware of the above, good chance it now too small and will be crap.

To be truthful, the Gimp Windows printer plugin lacks an update. Needs a
maintainer (if anyone out there wants to contribute.)

Often better to use some other application to print your images.

[Gimp-user] How To Put A Signature On A Document?

2019-05-18 Thread abrogard

I've researched this under join two images, etc., all that kind of thing, and
found many answers and noted there's many people asking the same thing.

But none of the answers work for me.

I finish up with different things different times. sometimes no evidence of the
pasted image at all. sometimes it hangs there as a 'crawling lines' outline.
sometimes the whole 'base image' starts moving around as I try to position the
added image (which I've not had yet in clear form).

And so on.

Can someone please help with a definitive clear explanation?

The signature, of course, is a little rectange mainly erased just the writing
existing. The base image is a document. A4.

There isn't really much you can do to the picture to make it look better on
the screen. Increasing saturation might help a bit, but the only real way
is to get a better screen for your computer.

Clipping Path? A nasty PS thing for jpegs? No good trying to apply PS concepts
to Gimp. If you have not already seen this worth a look.

The section is https://docs.gimp.org/2.10/en/gimp-tool-path.html

In pictures: https://i.imgur.com/ayyAcDw.jpg

Ctrl-Shift-click (Command-Shift maybe for Mac) deletes a control point or a
segment between control points

Control points not in the correct place, add as required with Ctrl-click

Gimp is built around plugins and paths are no exception.

Lots here http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-path-tools/files/scripts/ all
python plug-ins

and about 5 down ofn-path-edits.py Comes with documentation on use, although for
joining control points they have to overlap closely.

Still using Gimp 2.8? Time to upgrade to Gimp 2.10 (unless of course unlucky to
have a Mac)

[Gimp-user] How to cut or combine paths in GIMP

2019-01-26 Thread Kjotvi
I am trying to do a simple clipping math in GIMP, and I need to combine a
circular path with a bump out to show part of the image that extends beyond the
circular path. In my experience I would either cut the circle or delete a short
section of the circle, then link the end points of the "bump-out" to the new end
points fo the circular path. Alternatively I could have the "bump-out" overlap
the circle, and merge the two.

I can find no "delete path section", "cut path section", or "merge paths"
language (or anything similar) anywhere in the GIMP manual. How would I go about
accomplishing this?

[Gimp-user] How to cut or combine paths in GIMP

2019-01-26 Thread rich404
Additional to the previous:

To add a mask in Gimp Layer -> Mask -> Add Layer Mask

see: https://docs.gimp.org/2.10/en/gimp-layer-mask-add.html

A few ways but say, using Black (full transparency) then Path-to-selection, fill
the selection with white.

Saving as a Gimp .xcf keeps masks, paths, active selections. For an export, png
keeps transparency, You can try exporting as a psd, but as-far-as-I-know while
you get transparency & a layer mask, that is all. No paths transferred.

First a caveat, I would not recognise a comet at 100 metres.

Always many ways with Gimp but try: (with screenshots)

1. I would promote the image to 16 bit, might be that already, I see your jpg
has a quality setting of 55 to get a smaller file size. Use your best image.
https://i.imgur.com/BqFWbsG.jpg

2. Duplicate the layer "Layer -> Duplicate layer" and apply a large gaussian
blur to the new layer. "Filters -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur". The value will go
above 100, do not be fooled by the sliders. Round about 200
https://i.imgur.com/llKHYQy.jpg

3. Put that blurred layer into "Difference" mode. That will even out the
background. https://i.imgur.com/J3lfW0R.jpg

4. Rather than destroying your work combine those layers "Layer -> New From
Visible". Apply "Colors-> Levels" to this layer. Use the White point picker and
choose one of those larger white-ish stars. https://i.imgur.com/RRFP2iN.jpg

5. Get rid of the smaller stars/junk "Filters -> Generic -> Erode". If you feel
it needs it, repeat. https://i.imgur.com/dcNks8Y.jpg

Attached a result, again lower quality setting to get the file size down.
Might/might not be what you require.

[Gimp-user] How to fix vignettting, smooth out digital noise and reduce sky glow in astro-photo

2019-01-04 Thread 1stSolo
Hi, all.

I have a picture of comet 46P/Wirtanen from a few nights ago.

I'm new to GIMP and it's like a space shuttle control panel to me.

Can you please provide step-by-step instructions to
1. reduce vignetting in the corners
2. smooth out the background noise
3. keep stars (the brightest ones are already over-saturated) and comet and
approximately the same brightness but make the background sky darker

I tried playing with levels picking various black/white/mid points but wasn't
happy with the results.

I also tried gaussian blur but could not figure out how to apply it to the photo
without bluring the stars. Perhaps some mask needs to be created to isolate
stars and comet so that the gauss filter can be applied to the rest of the
pixels and allow to keep the comet and stars sharp?

Thanks!

My advice, ask the question on one of those other forums where it is easier to
give comprehensive advice than using this mailing list format.

However, This using a Ubuntu 18.10 (VM) Gimp 2.10.8 from ppa and gmic_gimp_qt
from www.gmic.eu Can't be a million miles from your Mint installation.

Not working? It might just be some missing QT dependencies?

or

Using maybe a flatpak Gimp 2.10? No QT support in this. I can get an old GTK
version of gmic working but only because I am keen.

An alternative for linux is an appimage. The latest come with gmic installed.
You are dependent on what the appimage maintainer gives you.

I feel that GMIC completes GIMP. Actually, it was a user on these forums who
very kindly took time to make a video addressing my last question, who
recommended GMIC to me. I really love the spirit of their project and find the
tools to be invaluable to anything I'm doing. I would also recommend the
"download all data" option from within the filter if you really love camera
presets. It's pretty amazing. I can't really stress how cool GMIC is.

I came to the forum today because I use Linux Mint and cannot seem to get GMIC
working with 2.10, so I'm stuck on 2.8. That's how much I love the GMIC. :)

But seriously, I do use some of its 'repair' filters quite often. A lot
