One in five judges has kin practising in same High Court:BCI

Nearly a fifth of India's senior judges have relatives practising in courts
over which they preside, a practice frowned upon by the Bar Council
of India (BCI) as a possible source of corruption.Data received at the
council, a statutory body of nearly a million lawyers enrolled nationwide,
indicate that the practice is wider spread than might have been suspected.
As the BCI vice chairman, Mr Adish Aggarwala put it: It's not a case
or two here and there. It's almost rampant. India's 21 High Courts have
about 500 judges in position, the rest of the sanctioned 647 posts being
vacant.
Reports from Bar groups and members show that more than 100 judges
in 16 High Courts have relatives some as many as four or five enrolled
or practising in the same court. They include judges' sons, daughters,
parents, siblings, nephews, nieces, uncles, cousins, in-laws and so on.
Bar groups in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Orissa and parts
of Madhya Pradesh have yet to reply, Mr Aggarwala said. The practice
is a definite 'don't' under the BCI rules of standards of professional conduct
and etiquette.
The BCI rule: An advocate shall not enter appearance, act, plead or
practise in any way before a court, tribunal or authority mentioned in
Section 30 of the Act, if the sole or any member thereof is related to
the advocate as father, grandfather, son, grand-son, uncle, brother,
nephew, first cousin, husband, wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt,
niece, father-in-law, mother-in-law, son-in-law, brother-in-law,
daughter-in-law, sister-in-law.
The ball was set rolling a few months ago with the BCI asking Bar
associations and state Bar councils to send particulars on members
practising in High Courts presided over by relatives.
A few weeks ago, Bar leaders held a news conference and disclosed
names of 32 judges of Delhi, Mumbai and Rajasthan High Courts who
between them have 44 relatives practising law in their courts. They
explained that such bench-bar kinships were viewed as a possible
source of corruption.
The law fraternity is anguished and disturbed at corruption in the
indian judiciary and allegations of unfair means adopted by some
of the near relations of the judges practising in the same court,
they said in a statement.
They sought the Chief Justice of India, Mr Justice V N Khare's
intervention to transfer all those judges whose relations are practising
in the same courts to check such unfair practice.
Alternatively, the Bar leaders said the state Bar councils have
to initiate disciplinary proceedings against the relations of the
judges who are practising in the same courts. They made it clear that
lawyers in such a situation were forbidden to practise in the entire
court not just before a specific bench.
Asked what the BCI will do with the information, Mr Aggarwala said it
was forwarded to the government which had received inquiries from MPs
and was also being transmitted to Mr Justice Khare for action. The Bar
spokesman recalled similar efforts made in 1993-94 during the tenure
of former chief justice, Mr Justice M N Venkatachaliah.
At a BCI workshop at Kollam, Kerala a year and a half ago, India's then
chief justice, Mr Justice Sam Piroj Bharucha indicated that as many as
twenty per cent of judges were corrupt.
More than 80 per cent of the judges in this country, across the board,
are honest and incorruptible, he said. It is that smaller percentage that
brings the entire judiciary into disrepute. To make it known that the
judiciary
does not tolerate corruption in its ranks, it is requisite that corrupt judges
should be investigated and dismissed from service.

Re: [Goanet]Re: BBC: Reviving Goa's Portuguese past.

2003-07-29 Thread Bernado Colaco
Mein Freund Fred,

Your poksy poll means nothing. If Nehru had the
courage he would have called for a referendum on Goa
immediately after the invasion. The bharati was
worried of failure since there was Goan apathy (you
report somewhere on the web) even though he applied
terrorist tactics on the Portuguese Government in Goa.
The duff opinion poll was a right slap on the face of
bharat, in that Goans would have nothing with the
interference of Goa.

Kindly note that I am from the post invasion
generation and the name ole xac was coined by Hosay
Lorenko on one famous Goan web site. The bharati brain
washing of Goans is so intense that young Goans are
lead to believe that any body writing a bit of
Portuguese should be in their 60’s. As you can now
understand that I am not nostalgia, but what I write
here is based on observation and experience I have had
due to globalization.

Stop playing your futlolem records like posting
trivial Phd articles which can be rubbished. Get down
to serious business like checking into the
displacement of people and unwarranted destruction of
Goa’s environment at Mopa.

Bring back the quarta classe and save Goa.

Ole Xac

Hi Ole Xac: Anyone not stricken by Lusostalgia would
 concede that there
were things wrong with the colonial administration.
 Likewise, someone
without blinkers on would also admit that there were
 some positive things
about Portuguese rule. This does not mean that
 colonialism, as a
 package, was a preferable option.

Rightly or wrongly, a large section of Goans today
 feel they are better
off after 1961 than before. Contrary to what the
 William Dalrymples
suggest, the views of the Donna Georginas in
 Loutolim remain a perspective
shared by a limited number of Goans who had it good
 pre-1961. My guess is
that for a large section, including those in the
 diaspora (who have some
perception of Goa but often may not have much
 contact), it just didn't
 make a significant difference.

In 1991, when one did a story on the people's
 responses three decades
after the demise of the Portuguese regime, I asked
 around for the
three best and three worst things that happened to
 Goa after the 1961. It
would seem that those who were more priviledged (and
 there weren't many
of them, statistically speaking) felt nostalgic
 about the past. It cut
across religious lines. One can't say it also cut as
 readily across
class / caste lines. The barriers are there for
 anyone to see or
 study.

This happens, on a lesser scale though, in former
 'British India' too.

But, at the end of the day, should we be just
 obsessed with this one issue
-- what would Goa have been, had it continued as a
 Portuguese colony?

Dr. Susan Rodrigues writes that, about a year aog, she was telling a friend
about her childhood within thge Goan Community. Her friend suggested that
she should collatge such stories as they would provide a hostory of the rich
Goan culture and traditions. Dr. Rodrigues is now drawing on the wewalth of
experiences that exist within the Goan Community.

She is calling for stories/anecdotes which can be about anything concerning
Goa and Goans. These may take the form of a simple rec0ollection of a
family or of a cultural event, thjey may be a humourous accoutn of an
escapade or an occurence or simply something which you would like recounted
for posterity. The stories can be in the first person, as this often makes
them more interesting and easier to read. She hopes to edit the collection
and to submit it for publication at some stage.

Dr. Rodrigues has already received a good response. If you are able to

 Dear Santosh,
On this point I could not agree with you. If you are interested in
the correct usage the prize should be called 'Goemcho inaam'. A prize is
masculine in Konkani...just like our Chimbelcho cheddo.

 Dear Miguel:
I thought the word prize would be better, compared to puroskar, inaam,
bokxish or prem because: a) non-Konkani speaking Goans are eligible to
receive this prize, and
b) this word has already become part of the conversational Konknni lexicon
in Goa.

They insist that prize is feminine. Mind you, these people are not .

[Goanet]EXPATS: Panel to study low-cost Kerala-Gulf flights

2003-07-29 Thread Frederick Noronha (FN)
Panel to study low-cost Kerala-Gulf flights

From Indo-Asian News Service

New Delhi, July 29 (IANS) The civil aviation ministry has set up a panel to
study a proposal for low cost charter flights to the Gulf region from
Kerala.

People from Kerala currently have to pay steep airfares for flying to and
from destinations in the Gulf. Keralites constitute a major chunk of Indians
working in the Gulf.

A committee has been constituted to study the modalities of low cost
operations from Kerala to the Gulf under the aegis of Air-India Charters
Ltd, Civil Aviation Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy said in a written reply in
Rajya Sabha Tuesday.

This committee is yet to finalise its report.

The final decision will be taken after ascertaining the financial and
economic viability of the project, said Rudy.

While the operation of low cost charter flights would be a boon for
Keralites, it is expected to affect operations of India's flag carrier
Air-India, which charges steep fares during peak holiday seasons.

2003-07-29 Thread Gabe Menezes
We were informed almost three weeks ago that the Police would be filing

to have forgotten about this case or has put it on the back burner as he
has more important things to attend to, like answering to the charge of
the crooked Judges, that he had mentioned.

[Goanet]Re: Peace - the real discussion ...

2003-07-29 Thread Joe Vaz

Santosh Helekar writes in Goanet:

If what you just posted twice helps you in any way to achieve the peace of
mind that you seek then I am honestly happy for you.

Dear Santosh:

Thanks, I don’t post messages just to achieve peace of mind, but more to
impart piece of mind. FYI lately, some of my messages have NOT appeared on
GNet, and as a result, I had to post twice.

But I don't know what you are trying to prove by citing fragmented excerpts
of my prior posts, out of context and in a jumbled up order.

Santosh, like I said the excerpts were just *glimpses* of your nonsensical
posts, --ridden full of delusion worth no more than the ‘delete’ key you
suggested.

People usually regard such a thing in even poorer taste than what you seem
to be accusing me of doing.

People are already seeing your provocative posts as nothing but in “poorer
taste.” Many are flabbergasted that you have resorted to ridiculing people
who rightly stand up for their faith.

Most of the people you are trying to appeal to have already read those
excerpts in their proper context when I first posted them. They have already
formed an opinion, good or bad, about me.

And yes, people have already voiced their views and asked you to desist your
abusing their spiritual beliefs. But no, you will doggedly pursue your
tirade against them. That’s when I intervened to ask you to stop your
unwarranted provocative attacks. This can be readily verified from my past
posts.

Furthermore, I am not running for a political position. You need not do a
hatchet job on me.

Perhaps you should run for a political position, as your present
self-proclaimed profession of ridiculing people (as you can see) is getting
you nowhere.

Actually, for your benefit I would gladly admit that I have indeed
ridiculed miraculous explanations of natural phenomena, various kinds of
superstitions and supernatural events described in the religious
literature. [???]

Santosh, do you consider Jesus raising the dead man Lazarus to Life, as
stated in the Bible/Scriptures ( ‘religious literature’ ) as “superstitions”
and “games”? Are you saying that these verses from the Bible, are nothing
but games and jokes? Would you be saying the same about the Koran or
Bhagwat Gita too?

Joe Vaz wrote:
I had cited just two examples of a miracle by definition: Red Sea
parting as depicted in the movie The Ten Commandments (i.e., not
simply a low tide); JESUS RAISING THE DEAD MAN LAZARUS TO LIFE (John,
xi).
Santosh Helekar wrote:
As I alluded to before, NOBODY SAW THESE GAMES. Joe Vaz, Have you seen
them?
THE ABOVE MIRACLES ARE AN APPEAL TO IGNORANCE...

Now, Santosh Helekar writes:
I am not ashamed of having done such a thing.
You are not ashamed of your above mockery? Well, you don’t cease to amaze
me.

There is a rich and dignified tradition established by great people such as
Charvaka, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi, Gora, etc
in India, and Benedict Spinoza, Thomas Jefferson, Friedrich Nietzsche, Mark
Twain, Albert Einstein, H. L. Mencken, Bertrand Russell and Richard Dawkins,
among others, in the West, who have done exactly that in a much more
provocative, poignant and significant manner than I can ever imagine doing.

Santosh, are you comparing yourself to the above individuals? You think
making mockery of people and their religious beliefs will put you on a high
pedestal?

I wonder how much Mahatma Gandhi and others (you mentioned) would agree with
you, -- whose names you take in vain. You should be truly ashamed of saying
that you are following a rich and dignified tradition by provoking people
and mocking their religious beliefs.

So your quixotic efforts at indicting me in this forum would not do
anything to deter me from posting any such comments or arguments in the
future.

I don’t really care whether it deters you or not, but every time you make
such inflammatory comments, you will be prone to be corrected.

As for the rest of the stuff you have posted, let me just say, I don't
want to do a hatchet job on you. If you want to refresh your memory
regarding your recycled chicken-crossing joke on the Buddha, please look it
up in the Goanet archives.

Santosh, if I did say anything AT ALL on Buddha or Buddhism, you show me
where I did so, -- if not HOLD your PEACE -- stop making specious
inferences. I am positive I wrote nothing against ANY religion. I can live
well in the company of Hindus, Muslims or Christians, and equally well with
different nationals I have come across -– Americans, Canadians, British,
Australians, Pakistanis and Indians alike. I personally never encountered
any problems with any one of these people and their diverse religious
beliefs; -- each is respectful toward other fellow beings’ spiritual
beliefs.

Regarding your suggestions on what type of scientific research I should do,
thanks, but no thanks. I have already chosen my line of research, and made

[Goanet]EXPATS: Publication for expatriate Keralites on the anvil

2003-07-29 Thread Frederick Noronha (FN)
Publication for expatriate Keralites on the anvil

By Sanu George, Indo-Asian News Service

Thiruvananthapuram, July 29 (IANS) Kerala legislators were informed Tuesday
that the government is planning to bring out a journal that would focus on
the needs and problems of the state's large expatriate community.

Non-resident Keralites (NRK) Minister M.M. Hassan mentioned the publication
plans while speaking in the assembly on various proposals before his
department to help the 1.6 million Keralites settled abroad, mostly in the
Gulf region.

Among other things on the agenda of Roots-Norka -- a state-run agency that
looks after the welfare of NRKs -- is the teaming up of various Malayali
organisations both within India and abroad, he said. Also planned is an
identity card for Keralites living in India.

The government is even planning a legal cell to help Keralites within the
country embroiled in cases.

A major demand before Hassan's department is for reservation of seats in
Kerala's higher education institutions for NRK children and setting up of
examination centres abroad so they do not have to come to their home state
to appear for entrance tests.

Satish Nampoothiripad, the CEO of Roots-Norka, said the plan for the
publication for NRKs is in the early stages, but we are committed to come
out with the journal.

Nampoothiripad told IANS: Right now we have a website for NRKs and on that
we bring out a bimonthly newsletter. We are thinking of bringing out a hard
copy of that and we plan to get articles from NRKs interested in writing.

On the new insurance-cum-pension plan for NRKs brought out along with the
Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), he said it is picking up but
there are a few bottlenecks with regard to medical check-ups for the
policyholder.

We are having a discussion with top LIC officials early next month to sort
out the few bottlenecks and once that is cleared, we expect a good demand
for this product, said the Roots-Norka CEO.

Re: [Goanet]MARG seeks white paper on traffic situation in Goa.

2003-07-29 Thread Miguel
MARG is doing a good job as is IRTE (I do not know whether its contract has
been extended beyond 31 July,2003) to promote safe roads. My comments are
interspersed.

Miguel

MARG seeks white paper on traffic situation in state
 --
---
The Movement for Amity towards Roads in Goa (MARG) has asked the
state government to publish a 'white paper' on traffic and transport
situation
in the state during the last ten years. The MARG activists demanded that
the 'white paper' should include the number of accidents and deaths
occurred on the roads during this period.
Miguel: Data on accidents is more often manipulated than correctly used. I
am sure that data for fatal accidents will show that reckless/drunken
driving is reponsible for more deaths than want of helmets on two wheeler
drivers. For this the data has to be seggregated into groups such as:A.
Accidents involving 6 to 16 wheeler trucks/trailers with any other
vehicle/object. B. Accidents involving 4 wheeler tempos/cars with other
vehcles/objects. C.Accidents involving three wheelers and D.Accidents
involving two wheelers with two wheelers/pedestrians/objects. The tabulation
of number of drivers, riders, passengers, pillion riders and pedestrians killed
should be seggregated. The data should then be presented as Death per
vehicle registered in Goa for each type of vehicle. The results will be
interesting to say the least.

They have also asked the state government to publish policies to be adopted
during the next ten years with respect to traffic and transport in state.
Miguel: The design of road, specially the 'banking'on the turns, has to be
part of the policy. The road to Mussourie is a pleasure to drive
on.Hopefully, the BRDO will do a similar job of the Verna to Vasco road. Our
PWD(Roads div.) engineers could get hands on training with the Army Unit now
in Goa. Policies of the Town Country Planning
Dept.,PDAs,Corporations,Zilla Panchayats and Panchayats on set-back,road
access, etc affect the traffic flow as much as Parking,One-Way and other
measures notified by the District Collectors from time to time. Policies
must be based on data.Data must be collected---not manipulated. Therein lies
the hitch as everyone wants a quick fix!

The MARG has also urged upon the government to revert substantial part of
the
revenue collected as a road fine by the police to the police traffic cell
 to satisfy their genuine needs.
Miguel: There is no need for this. All departments will want their revenues
next.Education is free and hence there is no revenue. Who will fund such
departments and from where?
Ideally, the traffic police should be separated from the police force and
made into a separate directorate in the same department( Just as the
Directorate of Fisheries,Animal Husbandry and Agriculture can function as
one Department,so can traffic,CID,ANC and regular police function as
separate directorates in one Department) The technical staff ,e.g. the
traffic cop or the CID investigator, should be non -transferable between the
Directorates. It is not funny to see a CID inspector of yesterday issuing a
challan for overspeeding today. It is a waste of trained manpower.

It has also said that driver training institute which issues approval
certificates to apprentices should be established in Goa.

Miguel: This is specially important for heavy vehicle drivers who are
illiterate and do not know the hazards(including to themselves) of the
materials they carry.
It is not funny that there is no two-wheeler driving school given the fact
that there are more motorized two-wheelers(scooters/mopeds/mobikes) on the
road in Goa than all the other vehicles (including cycles) put together !!!
The craze of travelling to school on motorcycles ridden by underaged
schoolboys and girls must be curbed by penalizing the person who has paid
for the vehicle/given it to the minor rider. Treat it like mandatory
rape. The minor is below the age of consent to mount a bike.

Govt. urged to help unemployed youth to take up milk trade

Milk Distributors and retailers, who met on Sunday last
have made a strong plea to the State Government to help
unemployed youths by making them partners in the milk trade.
The distributors and retailers stated that to curb unemployment
and promote self employment the government should offer soft
loans with subsidy for purchase of fridge, rickshaw, etc. in order
to promote youth to venturing into business of milk.
Over 150 distributors and retailers from all over Goa gathered
at the meeting and aired their grievances. Majority of those
present were agents of Goa Dairy who complained that dumping
of milk from outside the state was due to cut-throat-competition
between the sellers in Goa.
They alleged that low commission by Goa Dairy, stopping of
petrol allowance and the recent MRP controversy were the
major problems faced. Further, they alleged that there was
a delay in paying commission by Goa Dairy to the agents.
The members, who had gathered, formed an All Goa Milk
Traders Association (AGMTA) of which Jayant Katkar
was elected President.
The other members on the committee are: Vice President
- Manoj Walke; secretary -Viraj Wadker; treasurer - Rajesh
Keuleskar and Anil Arobekar; members - Hanumant Warang,
Prashant Dessai, Ramchandra Halwai and Santosh Naik.

loan to City Men's Estate Pvt Ltd, a partnership firm, without allegedly
following proper procedure for its project Vasanta Farms.
The complaint has been lodged with the police by the Managing Director
of the bank, alleging that the loans were released by the earlier board
of directors without verifying the documents and thereby led the bank
into financial crunch. The case has been registered under section 420
and 408 of the IPC.
The partners of Vasanta Farms Anna, Joseph, Shoba, Sajjan, Satish J,
Karimotton of the City Men's Estate Pvt Ltd have been made alleged

would be brought to Goa for recording their statements.
Senior police officials said that complainant had said that the loan was
sanctioned for the building project 'Vasanta Farms' in Bangalore but till
date the building project had not come. The police are in process of
collecting more details about the case.
The loans were sanctioned during the tenure of board of directors between

in the FIR are: chairman, R D Khalap, directors: Prabhakar Narulkar,
Dharma Chodankar, Milind Kerkar, Motilal Bandekar, Manohar Sawant,
assistant general manager, A P Punege and others.
A senior official said that the inquiries were being made as to how the
bank had extended credit facilities to the people residing outside Goa,
when the clearance from the RBI for extending loans under the Multi-State
Co-operative Act was not obtained.
The police has recovered a letter written by the bank to the RBI, seeking
permission to sanction loans outside Goa in view the bank getting a status
of the multi-state co-operative institutions.
The police inspector (crime), Mr Lavu Mamledar is investigating into the
case under the supervision of the deputy superintendent of police,

HC admits plea on Parrikar's insinuations against judges
--
Congress spokesperson, Jeetendra Deshprabhu has approached the
High Court praying that it institute suo moto contempt proceedings
against the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar for allegedly making a
statement that judges were corrupt, and that it should direct Parrikar
to disclose the name of the corrupt judge.
When the matter came up before the double Bench comprising
Justice F I Rebello and Justice P V Hardas, the Bench heard the
petitioner and then fixed the matter for Wednesday to hear the Advocate
General on the matter.
The Bench also questioned why the newspapers had not been joined as
parties as the remark was published in the newspapers.Mr Deshprabhu
who is the Pernem MLA, has taken note of a newspaper report in the Herald
dated June 30, 2003 which carried the headline Judges too can be corrupt:
CM referring to a statement made by the Chief Minister at a public forum
where the Taleigao parade issue was raised.
The petitioner has also made a reference to a newspaper report of a press
conference held on July 3, 2003 by Parrikar, where he has stated that he
had a complaint against a judge that he had taken a bribe of Rs 5000 from
a multi-national company to pass a favourable bail order. He however did not
disclose the name of the judge concerned at the press conference, nor the
nature of the evidence in his possession.
Deshprabhu has submitted that the general allegation made that judges
are liable to be corrupt has the effect of lowering the authority of the
courts,
and that the faith of the people in the judiciary would be undermined.

He has also submitted that this statement constitutes criminal contempt
as defined under the Contempt of Court Act. In this regard, he has urged
the court to initiate suo moto contempt proceedings against Parrikar.
Deshprabhu has also stated in his petition that if Parrikar indeed has
evidence against the said judge, then he should have followed the procedure
for reporting the matter and taken appropriate measures in that regard
instead of issuing a public statement, especially in the light of his being
the Chief Minister.
The effect of an allegation of corruption against a judge, without naming him
is likely to result in casting a cloud over practically every judge of the
judiciary of the State, claimed the petitioner.
He has therefore approached the Court praying that the court take notice
of the petition and institute suo moto contempt proceedings against Parrikar
for committing criminal contempt as defined under the Contempt of Court Act.
He has also prayed that the court direct Parrikar to disclose the name
of the judge against whom the allegation of corruption is made.

Re: [Goanet]Gasohol...

2003-07-29 Thread marlon menezes
It is interesting to note that the use of ethanol for
fuel has a similar political twist in the US as well.
Some in the corn producing states of the US
successfully pushed for increased use of ethanol in
fuels in the US.

Ethanol in its pure denatured form is safe to
consume - it is basically pure alcohol that some on
goanet seem to sip large gulps off, prior to posting
on the net. The world leader in ethanol use used to be
Brazil. In the 1970s, it attempted to have ethanol
completly replace petroleum as its fuel of choice.
Besides seemingly having a detrimental impact on
Brazil's soccer performance for much of the 70s and
80s (and from which it has never fully recovered), it
was also too expensive. As a result, they too have for
the most part returned to using alcohol blends.

While most agree that oxygenated fuels improve
combustion (decrease ozone and carbon mono oxide), one
still needs to wonder if this is really as good as it
is cut out to be. For example, a lot of energy is used
into growing the corn, while very little energy is
needed to tap oil that literally gushes out from the
oil fields of Saudi Arabia. Stated in other words, it
takes more energy to produce less energy - otherwise,
we would have had perpetual motion machines. Also,
land that could potentially have been used for purely
agricutural purposes is now being devoted to produce a
rather expensive fuel, which to some, is a subsidy to
the rich automobile driver.

Another big issue, specially in India is the
functionality of the emissions controls on old cars.
Many countries require that their car owners
re-certify their car emissions every couple of years.
I am not too sure if this is the case in India as
well.

Cheers everyone!

 Gasohol? What's that?

The Indian ministry of petroleum has decided that
 fuel companies would
sell gasohol, or petrol mixed with five per cent
 ethanol, in nine states
 -- including Goa from September 30, 2003. Ethanol, a
 byproduct of sugar,
is an oxygenate used to burn fossil fuels.

The government has been debating about mixing
 ethanol, or anhydrous
alcohol, which is mainly produced from molasses,
 with auto-fuels, since
1977. Ethanol has a strong case: it is a renewable
 source of energy, is
non-polluting, burns better because of its higher
 octane content, and
saves foreign exchange, reports The Week (July 20,
 2003).

[Goanet]Re: Peace - Indictment handed down by Vaz

In a message dated 7/28/03 4:20:10 PM Central Daylight Time,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Dear Santosh:
You know what?

Dear Mr. Vaz:

If what you just posted twice helps you in any way to achieve the
peace of mind that you seek then I am honestly happy for you. But I
don't know what you are trying to prove by citing fragmented excerpts
of my prior posts, out of context and in a jumbled up order. People
usually regard such a thing in even poorer taste than what you seem
to be accusing me of doing. Most of the people you are trying to
appeal to have already read those excerpts in their proper context
when I first posted them. They have already formed an opinion, good
or bad, about me.

Furthermore, I am not running for a political position. You need not
do a hatchet job on me. Actually, for your benefit I would gladly
admit that I have indeed ridiculed miraculous explanations of natural
phenomena, various kinds of superstitions and supernatural events
described in the religious literature. I am not ashamed of having
done such a thing. There is a rich and dignified tradition
established by great people such as Charvaka, Raja Ram Mohan Roy,
Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi, Gora, etc in India, and Benedict
Spinoza, Thomas Jefferson, Friedrich Nietzsche, Mark Twain, Albert
Einstein, H. L. Mencken, Bertrand Russell and Richard Dawkins, among
others, in the West, who have done exactly that in a much more
provocative, poignant and significant manner than I can ever imagine
doing. So your quixotic efforts at indicting me in this forum would
not do anything to deter me from posting any such comments or
arguments in the future. I have every right to ridicule any such
proposals and beliefs, especially as they apply to explanations of
natural events and phenomena. Having said that, I stand by my
assertion that I have never ridiculed people's belief in God (as a
purely spiritual affirmation). I also stand by my assertion that I
have never tried to scientifically disprove the existence of God,
because it is a generally accepted understanding that God is an
abstract concept that does not have a physical existence.

As for the rest of the stuff you have posted, let me just say, I
don't want to do a hatchet job on you. If you want to refresh your
memory regarding your recycled chicken-crossing joke on the Buddha,
please look it up in the Goanet archives. Regarding your suggestions
on what type of scientific research I should do, thanks, but no
thanks. I have already chosen my line of research, and made my own
modest contributions. If I tell you what they are, you will accuse me
of ridiculing people's religious belief in the human soul, and ask me
what right I have to do such research.

I am amused at your implication that conducting scientific research
and posting skeptical arguments on Goanet are somehow mutually
exclusive. Let me assure you that it is similar to working for an oil
company and singing in the church choir at the same time. I am also
amused by your strained comparison of spontaneously articulated
scientific and rational arguments with recycled jokes and sayings
delivered through chain letter emails. Finally, your citation of my
Pandurang Fernandes response to an internet troll message is indeed
very revealing of the general attitude with which you have received
my posts. No wonder my posts disturb your peace of mind. Nonetheless,
I thank you for speaking your mind, and look forward to commenting on
your posts in the future. However, henceforth if you want peace from
me, please delete my posts without reading them.

Cheers,

Santosh
