[Goanet]Movie SINS
The hullabaloo over this movie is reminiscent of the theatrics of years ago with the release on Broadway of Corpus Christi, a play about a gay Jesus Christ! All the protesting led to more full-houses for the play and $$$ for the production company...irrespective of it's quality content. http://slate.msn.com/id/4062/ There was also a movie with a similar story line to SINS that was released a few years ago.. EL CRIMEN DEL PADRE AMARO - a Spanish movie. Refer. http://www.christiananswers.net/spotlight/movies/2002/elcrimen.html Just like MTV and The Grindor Bold and Beautiful and Kyu-ke Saas Kabhi bi Bahu Thi...the western waves are washing Indian shores. While we awaken and ape western values and culture, it is not suprising to unearth the very same from under our own soil... [Goanet]Changing Nature of Marriages - e-marriages!
The Navhind Times Changing Nature of Marriages by Bhicaji Ganecar THE world is changing very fast. So are people and traditions. Take the case of marriage. How much it has changed over the years! Today, presentation is everything. I remember that 30 years back, at a typical marriage celebration, guests used to be offered a plate of locally-produced snacks and sweets like chivda. This was served along with a locally-made soft drink. Now nobody will dare to serve the guests anything locally made. It has to be branded and expensive. The guests expect to be served colas and ice cream and will not be satisfied with chivda and Mysore pak. Before the actual marriage, there is a ritual called Tel. As part of this ritual, the bride is seen by the bridegroom and is offered gifts like clothes and jewellery. The brides family also visits the bridegroom and a similar procedure is followed. This tradition has not changed. It is only the gifts which have got more expensive. And while on the topic of marriage celebrations, how can one forget the unwanted guests, people who invite themselves over for a local marriage? You find them everywhere. They turn up just in time to partake of the good food and then disappear. The brides family thinks that it is a guest from the bridegrooms side and the bridegrooms family assumes the same thing. The ultimate winner is the unwelcome guest. Today, a marriage celebration has to include a buffet. In Catholic marriages, drinks are also served. Then there is the dance without which no Goan Christian wedding is complete. Things have become so complicated and money-oriented that wedding planners are laughing all the way to the bank. Enterprising people have formed companies which take care of all the nitty gritty of the celebrations for a tidy sum, of course. Do expensive marriage celebrations induce people to opt for low-key affairs? Hardly, if you consider the fact that you need to book a marriage hall six months in advance. Then there is the video filming and photography. There are a number of professionals who have entered this field over the last few years. And why not? It pays very well. So the bride, groom and their entourage have to move as per the instructions of the photographers, stand as per their directions and overall trade their freedom for a good picture! I wonder what the situation will be in the future. Perhaps we will have e-marriages!

SOME GOOD NEWS FOR A CHANGE: Eighteen-year-old SANYA MYLA COTTA of Goa won the first place in the Devid Menezes National Violin Competition held at the Kala Academy, on Sunday. Her's was a dazzling performance way beyond compare. Bach's Chaconne from Partita No 2 in D minor, BWV 1004, and Saint-Saens' Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso were played with effortless ease and finesse. Excellent. Great to know that Western Classical music is alive and kicking in Goa. Brings back memories, as way back in 1975 I completed my LTCL (performer) in violin playing the very same pieces. All things mechanical and electrical however held a greater attraction for me than did music, and that's as far as I went with my musical studies. I content myself these days with leading the second fiddles in the local Preston Symphony Orchestra. MONTE MUSIC FESTIVAL gets going at the Chapel of Our Lady of the Mount at Old Goa from March 4 to 6. It brings two great musical traditions -- Indian and Western classical. Performances slated are by the Goa State String Orchestra (conducted by Victor Rangel Ribeiro), KA String Ensemble (led by Tereza Figueiredo) And this is festival seems growing into a tradition ... Keep it up, sister. P.S. look forward to meeting with VRR - he is expected in Melbourne in a fortnight's time... Cheers, Gabriel de Figueiredo Melbourne - Australia. [Goanet]Friday balaco on Patent Amendment Act
On the other hand, India's thriving pharmaceutical industry has shown that the price fixed by the monopolists has nothing to do with the cost of production. Indian generic manufacturers export generic medicines to over 200 countries. Indian generic pharmaceutical companies by bringing down prices of medicines have greatly facilitated access to anti-retroviral (ARV) treatment When you are saying that the price of production of drugs is low, are you taking into account the huge costs of research? Indian pharmaceutical industry is used to having a free ride on the research done by some others. It is time this stops, and hence we should support the Patent Amendment Act. If citizens want life-saving drugs, the govt. should fund research and can subsidize the drugs. How do these drugs get made in the first place, if there is no research? It is time this atttitude of stealing other people's research and then claiming it as one's fundamental right should stop. regards, Samir Kelekar

Just like some in the silent majority, I've been following this thread closely and mostly found the posts by all participants informativethat exchange momentarily went into a what-I'm-saying-is-more-accurate-than-you syndrome. Cecil on Mar 2/05 If a few stupid Goan Catholics will only marry only within their own caste then surely that is their own problem. Why should we be bothered? And if some Jurassic Goan Clubs still don't accept people of a particular caste then don't join that club, and stop associating with members of that Club. +++ Aren't you putting this a little too simply.there must be several hundred Goans who were scarred by being denied membership to the Jurassic Goan Clubs you mention.this has been an oft raised issue here on Goanet over several yearsif people keep mentioning thisit obviously affected some of them...probably something that you and I cannot relate too as we were not denied membership and probably can neither counsel them. [Goanet]A quick reply to your reply
Hi Cornel: I have replied to you in private why some of your assumptions are incorrect. And others have replied to you on the net. But I seek this public forum to ask you whether the following is just a long prosaic way of saying that you are not interested in providing a leadership role in helping needy Goans in London and UK? These include Goans of lower caste, upper caste and every brown-caste who may be in need of help in your homeland. Perhaps you think that these written posts will do the trick? :=)) Regards, GL Cornel: I get the distinct impression that you have taken to shouting rampantly from the rooftops at those taking an honest and conscientious anti-casteist position among Catholic Goans. Shouting is really not necessary, my good man, if one has something to say that is worthwhile. And now some responses to you: 1. Re your nearly all sasumais speak ill of their daughter-in law, irrespective of caste, please supply hard evidence/research for your statement. After all, you always, yes always, ask others to do this, so here is your chance to practice what you preach! 2. Re your daft suggestion that somehow I should like to be buried next to my parents, please note that the graves of my grandfather and father were turned over in Goa with absolutely no notification nor residual trace, in order to make space for the more recently deceased. I don't feel strongly about this at all but am clear, however, that I have a preference for cremation, anywhere I die on this good earth of ours, ideally, purged of the utter evil of man made caste which you seem to want to retain. 3 Re your point about African American self pride in their race, please note that you are totally wrong. They seek pride as a people and not as a racialized group as was strongly so in the past. Some of them also have a good inkling about how racist many South Indians are in the USA, as per my conversations with some of them on this issue, and also, that casteism is unmitigated racism. I am sure that research on these issues is in the pipeline. And yes, like the African Americans, I am proud to be a Goan but definitely without being casteicised by anyone. How an American in New York could be so wide off the mark re the African Americans and require correction from a mere Londoner (as depicted in your post) might, hopefully, make you more reflective. I would have liked a response to two points I raised for you i.e. how one can reconcile Catholic belief with Hindu belief, and why casteists need the crutch of caste when others do not. However, I really don't think I could expect an intelligible reply. Mudslinging from you does not seem to take much purchase as it is incredibly lightweight, and also, all over the place. However, let me leave a thought with you. What does it profit a man to deal with cancer in the human body but retain the cancer of caste in the soul? Regards from that fellow across the pond! [Goanet]Fat or Thin? Indian Scientists research
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/4308457.stm Do Indian 'sumo' rats hold obesity key? By Soutik Biswas BBC News, Delhi Obesity The sumo rats become ill and die earlier than their leaner counterparts They are the world's fattest rats, Indian scientists say, and they may hold the key to a gene which causes obesity. Scientists at India's National Institute of Nutrition are maintaining a colony of some 500 obese rats - most of the animals weigh anything between 900g to 1kg. The fattest rat that has been bred at the institute was 1.4kg, four times the standard weight of a rat. These rodents are fed a diet set down by international animal research standards - a mix of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. That means a diet of wheat, roasted gram, casein and skimmed milk. Scientists say the rats have a gene making them prone to obesity which is why they eat four times the amount that a normal rat consumes. Rats have always been a favoured animal with scientists for research on nutrition. Scientists at the institute have found that as the rats become obese, they develop degenerative diseases. Leptin gene Some 60% of them suffered from mammary tumours, 20% developed cataracts, and most of them had kidney abnormalities. All of them are infertile. Against the average life of a rat up to three years, these sumo rats, as some scientists describe them, do not live beyond 18 months. Obesity is a metabolic disease, not simply a problem which beauticians can fix Nappan Veettil Giridharan, rat geneticist In other words, obesity can lead to these diseases, says Nappan Veettil Giridharan, a rat geneticist at the institute. The gene that we are looking for could solve all these problems. Indian and US scientists are expected to work soon on a $500,000 project on identifying and cloning a gene responsible for the fat rats. The world's first gene found to be related to obesity was discovered by American scientists in 1994. Researcher Jeffrey Friedman, of New York's Rockefeller University, and his colleagues cloned the gene and identified its product, the protein leptin. Leptin is a hormone released by fat cells and is an appetite regulator, and now forms the basis of an anti-obesity drug. Scientists say hormones play an important role in how and when we eat. Dr Friedman had showed that mice which could not make leptin responded to leptin injections by losing up to 30% of their weight in two weeks. But India's fat rats show no signs of losing weight in spite of having high leptin levels. So there must be another gene which we are looking for which could solve the obesity problem, says Dr Giridharan. 'Obesity is a disease' The challenge is to isolate these genes. The obesity gene can lead to a protein which can lead to a drug, he says. Dr Friedman echoes the sentiment. Obesity example Obesity is a widespread problem The possibility of identifying another obesity gene is very exciting, he told the BBC News website. So do genes decide whether a person is fat or thin? That is true to a large extent, though not entirely, says Dr Friedman. Obesity is a huge problem in countries like US where, according to some studies, over 50% of the population suffers from it. Obesity is a metabolic disease, not simply a problem that beauticians can fix, says Dr Giridharan. There could be other, unusual spin-offs for India from the fat rats. Scientists say the National Institute of Nutrition could patent and export them as a laboratory animal around the world, bolstering its $140,000 a year revenue from selling animals for biomedical research. -- Cheers, Gabe Menezes. [Goanet]Music flows... boat songs from Goa
William Rodrigues is one of those young Goans, struggling it out back in Goa, stymied by limited opportunity, a small market, and the other negatives that go along with a small place. But I guess he identifies with Goa, and that's why he came recently with his 'Goan Boat Songs'. Needless to say, the charm of Goan music doesn't seem to be quite well represented in all its richness and diversity in cyberspace. Google http://www.google.co.in/search?hl=enq=Goan+musicmeta= throws up some 700 entries related to Goan music. Dulpod.com http://www.dulpod.com;Dulpod.com is an attempt at having a music magazine online. It could do with more regularity and inputs. (Look who's doing the talking!) But returning to my long-haired musician friend, William stumbled across me via the Net, and wrote in from some overseas location some months back. Hearing his 'Goan Boat Songs' CD (Sinaris, 2004, Rs 150) was quite entertaining and took one back to the world of the past. It has a number of medleys that we would know, in Konkani, Portuguese and English. There's the Goan folk song Santan Mauxi, the medley dulpod mix Come From England, the Portuguese Brazilian Maria Isabel, the Goan folk dulpod Aiz Etolo, the Portuguese Corredinho O Malhao, O Malhao, the Kunbi folk song Vauraddi, the mando and dulpods Surya Devun Gelo, Goan party medleys, Cadie Za Za, mando and dulpods Pauso Boglec Paulo, fuggdi song Gaddi Chalolea and the dekhni Aum Saiba Poltodi Vetam. Some things don't change in Goa. Our musical prefernces stay frozen in time. Almost. Why complain? It reminds one of the days in the 'sixties, when Goa was undergoing severe transformations, and music perhaps remained one consoling constant. Those were tough times, but one often likes to live in the past Is this what the expat Goans would like to tune in to? Would the hype-chasing tourist who lands on the river boat cruise find a chord resonate in this music? What would the purist say at this packaging of Goan music? William's CD puts it bluntly, when it says: All songs are performed live. Ghumot (Goan drums) are played by William Rodrigues. No extra takes and fine editing is done, in order to preserve the feel of live music, with real performance and rustic nature. William (36) says he's been playing since his school days in Fr Agnel's at Pilar, and has been on the drums, guitar and keyboards. He plays with Purple Haze, has his own one-man band, does solos and freelancing with other bands. Earlier he played with the Music Makers. This is his first CD, though he plans one of fuison music. Of late, he's been touring more often -- and has performed in Thailand, Singapore, around India, in Dubai, Portugal, and the UK. William's favourites are Latin music, Jazz, Country Western, and Goan. What's the music scene like in Goa, a place of so much talent? Just okay, he says, with a smile. Technology is taking the place of music. There's a lot of confusion. Bands are sidelined by pre-recorded music. Some persons who don't know anything of music take advantage of it. He feels the clubs are hardly cultivating suitable kinds of music. Not everyone is given exposure, and a chance to grow -- much is based on cliques. Goa's musicians need a professional approach. Society should be quicker to recognise talent, he feels. Everyone should be given a chance to grow. There is money, but people don't want to pay. They'd rather pay a musician from elsewhere than someone from Goa. Especially the hoteliers, he complains. There's little or no support (specially for Western music) from the government and tax-payer funded institutions. Among musicians, the lack of originality stems from the fact that nobody's encouraging it. Of course, the small market of Goa also makes things further difficult for the musician. Musicians have to become producers here, and the small market in a small state means its unmatured too. Maybe it's time for the musician from here to look at other channels of getting their work known. [Goanet]International Women's Day, an invite from Goa
Dear Friends, You are aware that for the last eighteen years we have been commemorating International Women's Day on of around 8th March with various kinds of programmes which are both a sharing and learning process about the rights, concerns and struggles of women where emerging concerns and demands are consolidated. It was on 8th March many summers ago that working women went to town with a demand for just and proper wages under the leadership of Clara Zetkin. Till today, women are yearning for justice, for freedom, for their voices to be heard. Women have been articulating their own visions, chalking their own paths. Women have a right to participate in deciding the course of their lives. Women's struggles are also linked to struggle of various other marginalized sections of society. So come another International Women's Day and let us meet again to talk about our struggles, our visions, our demands.Yes, about our steps, our paths. We begin with a rally which will commence at 9.30 p.m. on 7th March from Ambedkar Garden, near KTC Bus stand at Panaji and coverage at Azad Maidan where there will be a variety programme. Looking forward to meeting you. Yours sincerely, for Bailancho Saad

It is written by Sushma Naik in the February 28, 2005 issue of the publication. It adds that GSL was facing rought weather, and notes that shipbuilding is a competitive industry with the GSL's prime customer, the Indian Navy, increasingly awarding contracts via a competitive bidding process. Quote: This put GSL in a situation where it faced competition from other shipyards both in India and abroad. Express Computer argues that while the public sector GSL http://www.goashipyard.co.in/index.asp had the requisite IT infrastructure in place, its IT systems existed as islands with no bridges to connect, exchange and analyse data. Its home-grown systems supported business processes such as procurement, finance, stores and payroll; as these systems were not integrated, project analysis was extremely difficult. [Goanet]4th March FRIDAY BALCAO to focus on Indian Patent Act of 1970
-- Welcome to the FRIDAY BALCAO Read the Balcao Synopsis on the website http://www.goadesc.org/balcao/ -- Dear Cybergaokars on GoaNet, Friday Balcao the fortnightly discussion event to be held on 4th March will focus on the Amendment to the Indian Patent Act of 1970 and its implications. The UPA government has given effect to the Third Amendment to the Patents Act through the promulgation of an ordinance effective from 1st January 2005. The Amendment is ostensibly intended to introduce a full-fledged product patent regime to make our patent legislation compatible with TRIPs. The ultimate undoing of the Patents Act 1970 is thus sought to be accomplished in a non-transparent manner without any deliberations in the Parliament. Patents and medicine are inextricably inter-linked. Patents act as a monopoly. Drug companies possess separate monopolies over many life-saving and other drugs, including those that treat HIV-AIDS. As monopolists, these companies have no compunctions about fixing high prices for essential drugs. High prices create a clear divide between the rich who can afford the medicine and the poor who cannot. On the other hand, India's thriving pharmaceutical industry has shown that the price fixed by the monopolists has nothing to do with the cost of production. Indian generic manufacturers export generic medicines to over 200 countries. Indian generic pharmaceutical companies by bringing down prices of medicines have greatly facilitated access to anti-retroviral (ARV) treatment. What impact will the Amendment have on people in India living with HIV other ailments like cancer cardiovascular diseases ? How does the amendment deprive the citizens of their fundamental rights to oppose wrongful grants of patents ? Should not such a complex legislation of far reaching importance have been a subject matter of a thorough, public examination by an Independent Commission ? How will consumers get affected by this Amendment ? The Balcao discussion will cover these questions and and also evolve an agenda for action by citizens on the issue. Friday Balcao will be from 4pm to 6pm at the Goa Desc Resource Centre No.11 Liberty Apartments Feira Alta, Mapusa and is open to members of the public. Those citizens who would like to receive the regular invitation to Friday Balcao and a one page synopsis of the fortnightly session can subscribe for the same by sending Rs.100/- to cover printing and mailing costs. On what basis does he mistrust Basilio's motives, if he does, from what Basilio has written on his own approach? How are we supposed to trust anybody's sincerity from what they have written in this forum on the issue of caste? Why are vociferous denunciations and rants against caste more sincere than softer methods of getting rid of it in one's own life first, and gently persuading others to abandon it? How do we know people who project a militant anti-casteist view in public are not casteist apologists in private? After all, hypocrisy is much more widespread, albeit less pernicious, than bigotry. How did this holier-than-thou attitude get mixed up in the fight against casteism? Cheers, Santosh

Hi JC: Can I ask a stupid queston? Why does a thread suddenly get expanded into a post for zillion individual e-mail addresses? Many of the posters belong to the mailing list and thus get the post multiple times. Others get into the subject line half-way thorough the discussion. Personally I am trying to raise interesting ... perhaps controversial subject ... perhaps educational topics to get more Goans on the cyber-Goa mailing lists. But by this measure to individually posts, is giving the wrong message. Are these some VIP Goans? Just my opinion! To me both Marlon and JC have taken my statements out of context and out of the train of thought. In fact, I was the one who pointed out the differences between the Goa VCD and the SINS in the original post. Then I went to analyze the similarities beyond these differences. Are you trying to argue with yourselves? In that case, you do not have to state, WHAT YOU THINK I have said. Please take your time to read and understand the posts. With cyberspace there is not much time for the writer or the reader or the bandwidth to write dissertations. I like to write salient points and hope the readers can in their own mind expand on the perspectives and look at an issue from another view point. There are no right and wrongs ... there are perspective which we need to appreciate. Unless it is wild allegations that defies rationality. Just my view! GOVERNOR SAYS DROP DISQUALIFIED DY.CM, RANE TO TAKE VOTE ON FRIDAY From Pamela D'Mello [EMAIL PROTECTED] Panaji, Mar 2: Goa Chief Minister Pratapsing Rane will take a vote of confidence on Friday March 4, in a special session summoned four days after a previous attempt to prove his government's majority was stalled and hastily adjourned before the trust vote could even be moved. This time, the legislature meets under pro-tem Speaker Francisco Sardinha, a Congressman who was sworn in on Monday evening by Goa Governor s C Jamir, following the dual resignations of the BJP speaker and deputy speaker earlier that day in the House. In the close numbers game, the Congress is moving to reduce the BJP's floor stength in a tit-for-tat strategy, involving disqualifications under anti-defection laws. BJP's former Speaker Satarkar had disqualified a Congress ally and its deputy chief minister Felipe Neri Rodrigues just hours before the Feb 28 session could start at 2:30 pm that day, moving swiftly to issue an official legislature bulletin and finalise the matter. Both camps battling for power in Goa -- the Congress and the recently-ousted BJP -- are tied at 17 each, after Rodrigues's disqualification. Retaliating, the Congress Wednesday evening filed a disqualification plea against United Goans Democratic Party MLA Matanhy Saldanha who has backed the BJP while his party currently supports the Congress combine. Saldanha voted in favour of the BJP during the February trust vote for the Manohar Parrikar government, against his party's whip, Congress MLA Jitendra Deshprabhu has said in his disqualification petition. Meanwhile the political drama over deputy chief minister's Rodrigues' controversial disqualification continues in the Goa Legislature. On Tuesday the legislature secretary under the new Congress Speaker Francisco Sardinha filed a police complaint against former Speaker Viswas Satarkar, stating the disqualification file was missing from the Speaker's chambers Though Mr Satarkar returned the file this morning, original documents, contested as forged by Felipe Neri Rodrigues were not in the dossier handed in, Speaker Sardinha told The Asian Age here. There is only a copy of the membership form, he said. Mr Sardinha entered the Speaker's chambers on Tuesday morning admist high drama. Officials procured duplicate keys and found the cupboards and drawers locked, after former Speaker and BJP MLA Mr satarkar failed to hand in the keys on his resignation. A panchanama was conducted on the chamber's contents. Disqualified deputy CM Rodrigues, who has contested the documents produced against him as forgeries, is expected to seek a suspension or a stay on his disqualification either before the new Speaker or the High Court. BJP has however has argued here that Rodrigues is officially disqualified, and pointed out that a notice of his seat vacany has been intimated to the Election Commission. DROP RODRIGUES FROM CABINET, SAYS GUV: In further developments, Governor S C Jamir, facing criticism for dismissing the Manohar Parrikar government in early February after the BJP's MLAs started deserting it and its opponents claimed the numbers, has written to Chief Minister Rane asking him to drop Rodrigues from his Cabinet under the Constitutional provisions of the Tenth Schedule, which contains the anti-defection law. Meanhwhile in police investigations on the forgery case, BJP MLA Sadanand Shet Tanavade and BJP Goa party general secretary Satish Dhond were quizzed by the police this afternoon. Both had earlier sought anticipatory bail, and pleaded against a possible arrest in the matter. ENDS

[Goanet]response to Cornel
Dear Cornel: So be it. We fight battles in many different ways. I do not have the need to do battles to fit somebody's understanding of the battle. I do what I can to the best of my abilities, and not to meet anybody's expectation. If the way I choose to deal with the caste problem, does not satisfy you and for that matter anyone else, then so be it. On further reflection. In fact, my use of the word battle in my post should have been in inverted commas. I do not do battles. I do not battle anything. I find battling, whatever that may be, counterproductive. Militancy is not my thing. Therefore, no battles. In my younger days I battled a few social problems. And, with not any significant outcome. I have come to use my energies, both physical, mental and spiritual in a quiet way, nonetheless with vigor. I do not have the need to be seen in the public square as champion of something or the other. I find that respectfully engaging the other is much more productive than shouting down the other. I have no interest in changing the world, I am satisfied trying to affect one person at a time. I do part my and let others do their part. I do not know what your academic specialty is, but I surmise it is in the area of social sciences. From a social sciences point of view the claim of trying to stamp out caste is outrageously fascinating. I say - good luck to those who want to stamp out something from human primal structures. I am always weary of reckless activists. They are good at breaking the pot, by they can't put it together. All the very best, Cornel. Basilio Monteiro

(The) movie Sins .. just because a few right wing christian extremists may find this movie offensive, does not make it communal either. This behavior is not too different from that of the Sh*t Sena who have opposed the release of movies they considered offensive to their culture or religion. 3. Is there really a difference between them and Gilbert's attitude? jc response: I agree with 66.7% of (the above quoted part of) what Marlon has written. re: 1.- By confusing the Govt-produced VideoCD with the independently produced movie SINS, Gilbert definitely exhibits difficulty differentiating between personal freedom of expression and government sanctioned propaganda re: 2.- Absolutely on the button. Join the 'Sh*t Sena' in the gutter is just another way of saying that Catholics cannot manage things differently. What are the Catholic Sabhas saying? That ordained Catholic priests do not have heterosexual feelings of love? or that they are incapable of having affairs? or that there have been NO such affairs? My friends in the various Catholic Sabhas - You want to join the 'Sh*t Sena' in the gutter, feel free. My advice however is that Catholic will benefit from leading by example. Dear Antonio Menezes, You presume that I know, you know (and we know?) of three distinct groups? You are starting with wrong presumptions. I had never known of your classification. Neither did I ever care to find out what goes in the minds of humble folks that you are referring to. It is again your presumption. I never addressed any message to humble folks, except to the noisy folks on goanet! Are you representing the average goan folk as you suggest? I think that on goanet each one speaks for himself and for no one else! If others agree or disagree with us, that is entirely their responsibility. Please speak for yourself, and I shall see if I have any answers. I do not claim to represent anyone else except myself. [Goanet]Castes: Politics of Guilt or Repentance?
Dear Santosh / George, etc. Whether collective or individual, could it be politics of repentance? Is it not a worthwhile development, if individual repentance could move increasingly towards collective repentance? Does it apply only to Brahmins? Or to every caste group that oppresses its lower-in-ranks? This would apply to Hindus and their Goan Catholic inheritors. It suggests that those who fight justice do so because that is what the principles of justice require. George, There is also the Politics of Guilt. The brahmin fights casteism because he feels guilty and responsible for what he has wrought on the dalits. Perhaps, it diminishes his fight, and brings it in parity with that of the latter. [Goanet]Caste - Activism v/s Research
At 08:59 AM 26-02-05 +, you wrote: Hi Cecil, Many thanks for your very helpful suggestions. However, please note that I was not reporting a study which would have necessitated balance if conclusions were being presented. I was merely drawing on a stock of recorded excerpts which highlighted the existence of caste, in order to make a specific point. Of course, it is common knowledge in Goa and in the Goan Diaspora that casteism exists and is very real among Catholic Goans. However, at least one skeptic needed/wanted persuasive evidence. My piece was also weighty for the simple reason that a knockout blow was needed. I really was becoming weary of endless bitty question and answer posts which were merely going round and round in circles on the issue in question. Cornel -- Dear Cornel, It becomes difficult for me to reconcile the researcher in you with the activist in you. I am sure other readers too have that problem. A researcher will read the facts objectively and neutrally before arriving at conclusions, and he will present his findings dispassionately. An activist has his point to prove and hence will skew the conclusion to what he has pre-determined. And deliver these conclusions in a manner designed to evoke a particular response. Activists are a dime a dozen. I would like to see the researcher in you take centre stage. I am not being sarcastic. In this debate on caste we have many who speak emotively. What is needed is people who can speak from a neutral point with facts and properly researched information. I fully agree with your statement that casteism exists and is very real among Catholic Goans. But let us quantify the extent and the relevance of casteism before we use our energies to attack a problem that may not be as big as it is being made out to be. What is your definition of 'very real'? Forgive my simplistic views but for example: I have friends, associates, clients, suppliers etc from a whole range of Goan Catholics besides people of other religions and ethnicity. I don't know what their castes are and wouldn't be less bothered. When I ask someone which village he is from it is to make conversation and draw mutual connections to people we know rather than to guess his caste. How am I to know the caste of D'Souzas from Velim or the Mascarenhas from Siolim? Don't people in other countries also ask where you're from in conversation? Two non-Goan New Yorkers meeting over a beer in a pub might find they are originally from so-and-so town in Ohio. It's like discussing the weather for chrissake. It's conversation. Why does Fred assume that any such query is linked with finding out a person's caste? So where exactly is this diabolical caste problem? Or am I just to naive to understand some deeper issues involved. What are they? Are we making a mountain of a molehill? Will someone point out to me what exactly the caste problem is? Where does one see it? Is it 'very real' or, as Teotonio put it, are all these current debates the death throes of a dying monster? If a few stupid Goan Catholics will only marry only within their own caste then surely that is their own problem. Why should we be bothered? Just don't marry them - for crying out loud. And if some Jurassic Goan Clubs still don't accept people of a particular caste then don't join that club, and stop associating with members of that Club. Simple. Cecil P.S. None of my opinions expressed above are in any way meant to be a vindication of Gilbert Lawrence's viewpoint that there is no problem. I do not wish to be associated with Gilbert's illogical arguments and armchair research methods. All I am trying to suggest is that either it the 'problem' is highly exaggerated in this debate or it is so deep rooted that the current generation is not even aware of it's existence. =

[Goanet]Bagan, Salgaocar draw goalless
Bagan, Salgaocar draw goalless March 02, 2005 19:19 IST Three-time champions Mohun Bagan failed to translate their overall supremacy and opportunities into goals and finished goalless with Salgaocar, Goa, in a ninth National Football League match in Kolkata on Wednesday. With Brazilian Roberto Mendez Silva Beto leading the upfront assault with a brilliant display, the Kolkata giants kept their opponents under a tight leash for a major part of the 90-minute exchange, particularly in the second session, but failed to score. Salgaocar, who seemed content in playing for a draw, gave a good example of dour defending after the breather, as their rearguard, marshalled by the seasoned Roberto Fernandes, stood firm. The Goa side, however, found Beto a tough customer, as the Brazilian repeatedly rattled their defence with deft footwork and sudden bursts of speed. For his efforts he was adjudged the man of the match. Both sides now have on 12 points, but Salgaocar have played 11 games, one more than Bagan. Referee Walter Pereira had a tough time as both sides committed niggling fouls, forcing him to flash the yellow card at Bagan's Mehtab Hossain and Eduwardo, and Salgaocar's Felix Ibrebru. Six minutes from the half-time whistle, Beto showed his magic yet again, as he sped past two Salgaocar defenders but and took a rasping shot which went wide. Continuing the good work in the second half, Beto moved up the left and essayed a centre inside the box, but substitute Sunil Chhetri and Dharamjit could not connect properly. In the very next minute, Beto took a power-packed side volley, but the ball went marginally out. Towards the close of the match, Salgaocar came near scoring from a sudden counter, but Bagan custodian Subrata Paul, who was a picture of confidence on his return to on-field action after serving a suspension, came out of his charge to effect a smart collection. -- Using Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/mail/

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1038145.cms Goa's vote of confidence on Friday Add to Clippings IANS[ WEDNESDAY, MARCH 02, 2005 03:31:10 PM ] PANAJI: Goa Chief Minister Pratapsing Rane will seek a vote of confidence of the legislative assembly on Friday, Governor S C Jamir said here Wednesday. The assembly would be summoned and the trust vote session presided over by interim speaker Francisco Sardinha, who took his oath of office Tuesday. Sardinha admitted a petition by Deputy Chief Minister Filipe Neri Rodrigues, who appealed that an order disqualifying him from the house be put on hold. Rodrigues was disqualified by former speaker Vishwas Satarkar, who then quit, plunging the state into fresh political turmoil. Sardinha would also hear a petition by the United Goans Democratic Party, which has appealed for the disqualification of its only MLA Matanhy Saldanha for backing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against the party's wishes. Both the Congress and the BJP have 17 members each in the truncated assembly following the disqualification of Rodrigues. With Sardinha taking over as speaker, the Congress would have only 16 members with normal voting rights. Comment: Sardinha has opportunities to disqualify 1) The previous Speaker for fraud and bring the House into disreputy 2) Tanavade for forgery and bringing the House into disrepute 3) readmitting Felipe Neri. Saldanha cannot be touched - he can go against the wishes of his party - that is his perogative. -- Cheers, Gabe Menezes. London, England
Re: [Goanet]Re: Neri's file gone walk about!
He also said that when the legislature secretary asked Mr Satarkar where the file of Mr Rodrigues' disqualification was, he was told that it is in the locker. The locker can be opened with a single key and has three drawers. None of the drawers had the file. RESPONSE: Only Satarkar knew where the documents and form were kept. Since there there no break in, up and including the time of his resignation, he should be taken into Police custody for questioning. When asked if he, as pro-tem Speaker, could re-qualify Mr Rodrigues or suspend his disqualification, Mr Sardinha said he intended to study the legal options only after inspecting the file. What if he has not signed in the form at all?, asked Mr Sardinha. Mr Satarkar could not be reached for his comments. RESPONSE: What if there was no form at all? As alleged by Satrakar and Tanavade! Then they should be both brought to book for Forgery and deceit in misleading the House. Both should be expelled - nothing less will do! Cheers. Gabe Menezes. London, England. [Goanet]GOA NEWS: Parents spend night on street for KG admission forms in Margao
Gomantak Times / 2nd March 2005 - Page 3 Parents spend night on street for KG admission forms Our Staff Reporter: PANAJI: Seeking admissions to school for their wards can be a nerve-wrecking exprience for parents. And though the commencement of the academic year is months away, some parents are willing to spend the night on the street, just for an admission form. It is once again that time of the year when school admissions have started. And Monday, 28 March (sic) (Read 28 February) marked the commencement of admissions to kinder gartners in some schools. And one such school which witnessed a massive queue from 10 pm on Sunday night for the issue of the admission forms on Monday morning was Presentation High School in Margao. It isn't a life-or-death decision: it's just a kindergarten, says Principal of the School Sr. Annie Paul who has been the Principal for the last three years. She added, We can't help it, we had just one day to issue the admission forms. And what we experience is a mad rush for those forms. There were parents who stayed overnight just to get the forms, even after assuring them that every parent would get the form. The admissions forms issued were for KG I and KG II, but the queue looked like that of those seeking employment. This has been the scene every year, I heard of it, but this time I had to experience it too. Unaware of its seriousness, I went around early morning 5 am to the school and what I sawa was a que of around 200 people already there, reveals Xavier Fernandes, a parent. On enquiry, a few parents disclosed that they had been at the gates of the Presentation High School since 10 pm on Sunday night. The Principal says that it is nothing new and has been occuring for the past few years. Every year it is the same situation. I guess, it is the anxiety of parents that brings them a night before the admission forms are issue. However, a few parents who had an experience in the past reveal that it is not the anxiety, but the fear of not receiving a form issued in limited numbers. Every parent wants a space for their child in the school of their choice. Thus they are ready to even spend the whole night outside the school, the queue at times goes up to the Holy Spirit Church. And finally when the gates are open in the morning, many parents are forced to return without an admission form, says Mrs. Dias from Margao. The Principal denies the fact and states that every parent had received a form and around 304 admission forms were issue. According to the rules, for standard First class and above, we can allow on an average 44 seats. Now realising this fact, how can we take more childern at the nursery level? Where will the extra number of kids go? We can't throw them out. Therefore we maintain a restricted number of admissions at the Kindergarten level, reveals Sr. Annie Paul. Despite the demand and plea from parents, the authorities in school say they cannot offer more seats to meet the demand due to the rules laid by the education department. But confused parents question: Why are they issuing extra forms, if onely a limited number of kids will be admitted in the end. After all we pay for those forms, why puzzle parents? If informed before hand, we can always try and seek admissions in some other school, says a parent. As the argument continues there are yet more schools to issue admission forms and many more parents who will have to worry about admissions agree. Well parents say this was just about issuing admission forms, the admission days will be worse yet. The admission and registration of these kids can never be hassle free according to Rajana Kakokar, counsellor from Margao. Some parents began to fret about school admissions very early on trying to ensure that their 2-year olds attend the right nursery school. [Goanet]Neri's file gone walk about!
http://www.navhindtimes.com/stories.php?part=newsStory_ID=030241 Neri disqualification file goes missing from Speaker's chamber NT Staff Reporter Panaji March 1: The file of Mr Filipe Neri Rodrigues' disqualification petition has gone missing! There have been precedents of old files missing from record rooms, but the 'disappearance' of the file pertaining to the disqualification of Independent legislator, Mr Rodrigues, on which the former speaker, Mr Viswas Satarkar pronounced his order yesterday has puzzled many, including the newly-appointed pro-tem Speaker, Mr Francisco Sardinha. The disappearance of the important file came to light late in the evening today when the drawers of the table in the Speaker's office were broken open in presence of the police and the legislative secretary, Mr Sudhir Narvekar after the former speaker failed to hand over their keys. Later, Mr Narvekar lodged a complaint with the Porvorim police stating that the file pertaining to the disqualification of Mr Rodrigues was missing along with original documents. The pro-tem Speaker fears this is an attempt to destroy evidence because Mr Rodrigues has stated his signature has been forged. He has even filed a criminal complaint with the police. Now, Mr Sardinha is studying the legal options before deciding on the entire disqualification drama of Mr Rodrigues and on the missing file. Mr Sardinha told The Navhind Times that failing to get the keys to the locker in the Speaker's chamber at the Porvorim secretariat till 5.35 p.m. today, he called the police and had a carpenter break open the locker in the presence of Mr Narvekar. But the all-important file was not there. This all-important file contains a crucial document the original BJP membership form allegedly signed by Mr Rodrigues. The BJP legislator, Mr Sadanand Shet Tanavade has used this form to try and prove that Mr Rodrigues had indeed joined the BJP. It was on the basis of this 'membership form' that Mr Satarkar disqualified Mr Rodrigues from the legislative assembly yesterday. Mr Sardinha said he called up Mr Satarkar today morning and asked him for the keys of the locker. I told him this morning that we can't wait. Please send the keys by 5 in the evening today. He did not send the keys, so we called the police and broke open the locker. We found some other files. But this very very important file is not there. As Mr Rodrigues alleged that his signature on the form has been forged, this is an attempt to destroy evidence, Mr Sardinha observed. He also said that when the legislature secretary asked Mr Satarkar where the file of Mr Rodrigues' disqualification was, he was told that it is in the locker. The locker can be opened with a single key and has three drawers. None of the drawers had the file. Yesterday, the Porvorim police had re-started their investigations into the complaint filed by Mr Rodrigues regarding his forged signature in the BJP membership form. Police investigations had been stalled earlier by orders from the previous speaker. Mr Rodrigues has named Mr Tanavade, the BJP general-secretary, Mr Satish Dhond and others in his complaint. Police sources confirmed that although they sent written summons to Mr Tanavade to appear before the police today for questioning, he did not come. The police also sent summons to Mr Dhond and others to interrogate them. Policemen were instructed to paste these summons on the doors if they were not found in their houses, the sources said. But their wish to send the original membership form to the forensic laboratory in Hyderabad to establish the authenticity of Mr Rodrigues' signature may not come true yet. The file is missing. The Goa pradesh Congress committee president, Mr Luizinho Faleiro observed that the disappearance of the file has fortified the belief that documents submitted to get the Velim legislator disqualified were not genuine. Why else should the file go missing just a day after Mr Satarkar has given his verdict on the issue, he said adding that the disappearance has exposed the BJP's greed to grab power using foul methods and also to create constitutional crises. He further said that it was now evidently clear that Mr Rodrigues was disqualified on cooked-up evidence. He also said the case relating to the disappearance of the file has to be thoroughly investigated and truth revealed. Comment: If the form and documents relating to the dismissal are not available, a sworn affidavit should be obtained from the former Speaker. In the meantime the expulsion is null and void in the absence of supporting documents. I have stated before, the former Speaker and the people who purportedly witnessed the

Dear Teotonio, I am still at a loss to understand the pros and cons of caste system. I have not heard any concrete course of action to get rid of caste system. I like to know how you intend to confront this mammoth and sensitive issue. If you think I have understood the caste system better than the rest than I intend to stay put and enjoy the roller coaster ride. The addiction finally got to me unless you have a problem. BTW, your request to start another thread remark has the sounding of grouping, caste hierarchy and class alliance. If caste system is sensitive for Goans than how will you categorize people's mindset, power and affluence?
