[Goanet] another robbery at cavelossim/zalor

2005-12-12 Thread Roger Kennard
We have read your article in Goanet dated Jan 26 2005 about the two robberies
at Cavelossim.

Unfortunately, my wife and I recently suffered a similar very frightening
experience whilst walking along from Cavelossim to Zalor Beach (half way
between the two) at 16.20 in the afternoon of November 10th. when we were
stopped by four young men who held knives to our throats; made us get down on
the sand, and took money and three cameras (one video). We feel that the whole
incident had been well-planned and 'professional', and they even calmly walked
off to the trees and scrub at the back of the beach as if they had done this
before. We were then left to gather our strewn belongings and head for the
Zalor beach shacks to seek help. We then reported the attack to the Colva
Police and made a formal complaint.

It seems to us that this is likely to be the same gang who did at least one of
the attacks reported in your article.

We found all of the local people, together with our fellow guests, shocked and
most supportive when we told them what had occurred, and it was then that we
began to discover that ours was not an isolated incident.

Incidentally, we were staying at the Dona Sa Maria, as were Graeme and Julie
Skinner; one of the couples mentioned in your article.

We hope that you will be able to make use of this information.

Roger and Robina Kennard

[Goanet] Re: Goa to make HIV-free certificates 'must' for marriages

2005-12-12 Thread Sandy at Cavelossim
Have I understood this correctly; it is not just an HIV test that is required,
but that the test must be negative? Can anyone explain the logic of this? I
cannot see what is to be gained by preventing an HIV+ person from marrying as
long as the partner is fully aware of their status.

I also wonder what effect this requirement the new market for foreigners
marrying in Goa. It is not long since in the U.K. merely having an HIV test,
even if it was negative, could be enough to make obtaining insurance
difficult, so this may put people off. That said, if this requirement can be
shown to cut transmission of HIV it will be a price worth paying.

[Goanet] NATURAL JOYS - Part I

2005-12-12 Thread domnic fernandes
Life in Goa half a century ago was purely based on nature. People lived in a
healthy environment, ate natural food, breathed fresh air and lived in peace
and harmony. Joint-family was the norm at the time. As such, family values
were very high.

To live under one roof meant getting help round the clock. If there were four
brothers in a family, all of them lived with their parents in their ancestral
home. When a male in a family got married, his wife would have several
companions in the house - mother-in-law, father-in-law, brothers-in-law,
sisters-in-law, uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, etc. Thus, she would be
surrounded by scores of relatives throughout her life. If she conceived, she
would not be allowed to do any work; women in the house took over her duties
and made sure that she relaxed throughout her pregnancy.

Love and coordination in those days was great. When a child was born, he/she
would get attention from every family member in the house. In fact, the child
would become a natural joy for everyone. Each family member considered the
baby as if it was his/her own child and showered his/her love on it. The child
would be passed on from one family member to the other like a toy. One could
hear a child's cries only when he/she was hungry or sick, otherwise one hardly
heard him/her cry and that was because there was no shortage of baby sitters
in the house. What was most important was that the child received love and
affection from everyone in the house which in turn strengthened the bondage
among family members.

Girls in the olden days were given in marriage at a tender age of 12 or 13 and
they sometimes became mothers when they were barely 14 or 15 years old! If a
girl had not matured at the time of marriage, she would be kept in the safe
custody of an elderly in the house, preferably the mother-in-law or any other
elderly person. She would be handed in to the groom the moment she matured.
The newly-married couple, especially the girls, did not know anything about
marriage but they were tutored and guided by women in the house. A woman in
those days was meant to produce as many children as she could so they could
have a large family, which would be dependant on each other. In fact, the norm
in those days was: 'The larger a family the better'! Everything was done
collectively in groups. Today, we need cranes to lift heavy items including
large felled trees. In those days, a group of family members got together,
applied natural levers "lottunge" (solid round wooden pieces) and transported
the logs from one place to the other; even today, many use this old
inexpensive methodology to shift heavy wooden logs from one place to the other.

Nobody was worried about maintenance of family; everything was taken care of
by the Creator automatically! This being the case, almost every year was cause
to celebrate a child's birthday. People were God- fearing. Therefore, even to
think of an abortion was a mortal sin, and, if anyone had gone for it, they
were looked upon as murderers! Oh, how times have changed! Today, Science has
advanced so much that one can determine the sex of a child to be born through
sonography as soon as the fetus is developed, and, if it's a girl, they get
rid of it as if throwing out a packet of garbage! Bhogos tankam Saiba!

Although abortion was a taboo in those days, and nobody talked about family
planning, people knew how to take care of themselves through natural
means. "Moskachea pananchi bhaji kuddin gormi vaddoita" - Drumstick tree
leaves' vegetables create heat in the body, affects the system and reduces the
chances of pregnancy, and so does consumption of too many drumsticks. If a
woman conceived and did not wish to have a child, she would consume lots
of "moskachi bhaji or drumsticks", thrice a day - at breakfast, lunch and
dinner - for about a week, which would result in her monthly period and bring
about relief for her. In the olden days, the process was called 'cleaning of
the system.' It was used as a natural means of family planning. "Torne
popaiecho melgor" (raw papaya vegetables) was also used for the purpose; it is
considered more powerful than "moskachi bhaji."

Consumption of too much chocolate also produces the same result. However,
these natural wonders do not work with women who have strong uteruses.

The eldest child would get a baby partner to play with while he/she began to
walk, which meant he/she got a live toy to play with. Each new born child
would have the following child to play with. As children grew up, regardless
of the gender, they were taught how to handle and carry babies. Children were
very possessive of their brothers and sisters and grew up loving and caring
for each other. In those days, there was no entertainment of any kind and
neither was there any activity after the sunset. Unlike today, everyone,
including working members, returned home before the Angelus was said; the
church/chapel

[Mario Goveia]

On a private boate cruise along the Mandovi the other day I heard to my
amazement a visiting expatriate suggest seriously to me that the Navy might
be doing a good thing by restricting the flow of foreign tourists into Goa!
I had assumed that the flow of foreign tourism by air to Goa would be a good
thing especially in view of the torrent of migrants pouring in over land. My
only response was why cant the decision be left to the Goa government to
take by design rather than by default? Later I thought if this is the job of
the military (to restrict foreign tourists) then it should be done all over
the country (Rajasthan, U.P., M.P etc) not just Goa. The government's
tourism policy would certainly go for a big toss, right?

Goa to Broad-base Broadband
IT secretary says the program will take two years.

T Radhakrishna

Bangalore: Goa is planning to provide a broadband facility to each home in
the state, over the next two years, according to R P Pal, Secretary, IT
department.

“We are currently working on the modalities of the project, including the
request for proposal,” said the official.

He said that the government was also working on the State Wide Area Network
(WAN) project, which was one of its priorities. The project is part of a
nation-wide program being funded by the Ministry of Communications and
Information Technology (MCIT).

Pal, recently took charge as Secretary of the state’s IT Department and is
responsible for driving e-governance initiatives and the IT industry.

Okay, I did a little search and found out the way to create PDF files in
the Windows OS. (In GNU/Linux it's very simple.) Here are some
indicators:

http://kenchiro.tripod.com/howtoPDF.html
Creating PDF Files
Using Only Available Free Software
(For Windows Users only)

SourceForge.net: PDFCreator
About PDFCreator. PDFCreator easily creates PDFs from any Windows
program. Use it like a printer in Word, StarCalc or any other Windows
application. ...
sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/ -

There are other solutions online too. Search Google for something like
"how to make a PDF file in Windows" (without quotes).

Miguel, please pass this on to Roque. It should be easy to make Ulo
available as a PDF file somewhere on the Net. FN

Air India One experiences severe jolt as it nears Malaysia
Onboard Air India One | December 11, 2005 6:08:47 PM IST

It may seem far fetched or even next to impossible, but Air India One,
the 747 aircraft carrying Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his
entourage, experienced a severe and massive jolt about an hour before
landing at Kuala Lumpur Airport.

Manned by Captain Kathalia, the huge aircraft with spacious seating for
all, swayed from left to right as it entered an air pocket between the
Andaman Islands and Kuala Lumpur, but nothing untoward happened.

For those not in the know, Air India One, which usually carries the
President and the Prime Minister on their official tours abroad, is
thoroughly checked several days before a scheduled VVIP flight by
airline and security personnel, especially by the Special Protection
Group (SPG), which provides security cover for at least 22 VVIPs of the
country.
Crew designated for this special aircraft, as also food and beverages
are thoroughly checked as well. The delegation accompanying a VVIP is
asked to report at least two hours before the intended flight for
purposes of verification and baggage check-in formalities. Each
passenger is asked to furnish relevant documents for the travel a couple
of weeks in advance to ensure proper verification at the time of
departure from the VVIP section of the airport.

Air India hasn't had a fatal accident since 1982 (apart from the 1985
Kanishka bomb case over the Irish coast). According to informed airline
sources, since then, the airline has carried out about 750,000
departures.
Air India, originally known as Tata Airlines, was founded in 1932. It
became the world's first all-jet airline in 1962. Its headquarters is at
Mumbai.
Currently Air India operates an all wide-body fleet of Boeing 747-200s,
300s, and 400s as well as numerous Airbus A-310s for regional Indian
Subcontinent services. (ANI)

[Goanet] Why Goa has names for 132 species of local fish... (a brief review)

Thomas Stephens Konkkni Kendr of Alto Porvorim has recently come out
with Sod-9, a new issue of the Konkani research bulletin. It's a volume
to felicitate Dr Matthew Almeida SJ who completed 70 years recently.
Many would know Fr Almeida as a teacher-rector-principal in St Vincent's
(Pune), St Britto's (Mapusa), St Paul's (Belgaum), St Paul's Junior
College (Belgaum) and in other roles at Loyola Hall (the Jesuit-training
institution at Miramar), the first director of the TSKK (when it was
transitioning between Miramar and Porvorim) and as Sod editor from 2000.

Those working in Konkani may not get the attention deserved.
As his colleague and confrere Pratap Naik sj writes: "Konknni
lok mootbhar and toh shipdoon padla sansarbar. Tantun Konknni
vachpi chimtibhar. Boroupi teelbhar." (Konkani speakers are a
fistful, and they too have been scattered across the globe.
Of them, Konkani readers are a pinch-ful, and writers, and
  even less significant number.)

That apart, this volume, priced at Rs 100, does a good job of bringing
focus to a language that adds to the linguistic diversity, and encodes
within its rich insights into this what makes this region tick.

Joseph Velingkar of St Xavier's College (Mumbai)-based Heras Institute
writes on the village communities in Goa and their evolution. He writes:
"This system of village communities, in turn, gave rise to social
distinctions among the population. It not only divided into castes, each
disputing superiority over the other, but again divided the villagers
into two big classes, ganvkars and residents (moradores). The ganvkars,
being the descendents of the founding fathers of the village, claimed to
be the aristocrats of the place, and looked contemptuously on the
residents, i.e. those not descending from the original settlers. The
struggle for dominance between these classes is more clearly seen in the
celebration of religious feasts and processions."

But another argument seems a bit to simplistic, and officially-attuned:
"After Liberation, the village communities being found stagnant, the
Agricultural Tenancy Bill was passed to provide security to and reduce
the rent burden on the on the tenant cultivators. The tenant was also
freed from the absentee landlord's exploitation and kept in direct
contact with the State."

Former XCHR founder-director Dr Teotonio R de Souza's focus
is on the use of 'confessionarios', or manuals of
confession. His chapter is titled 'Missionary tools and their
colonial uses: the case study of Goa'.

Souza writes: "The pioneering role of the Portuguese Discoveris in
extending the impact of 'modernity' was far from a secular exercise. The
age of 'lights' was yet to dawn. The Portuguese 'Padroado' system was a
weeding of the State and Church interests on a world scale. The Society
of Jesus played a pivotal role in the practical functioning of this
joint venture, saving the State much cost in violent domination of the
eastern countries."

But he also says: "Even though it is not uncommon nowadays to read
derogatory comments about the missionaries as accomplicies of the
Western colonial expansion, we need to admit that colonialism could have
been a much more brutal reality without such a missionary
accompaniment."

Souza tells about his chance find of a "small sized, leather-bound codex
(4.5" x 7") in the 'Additional Manuscripts' collection of the British
Library some years ago. It begins with 'Arte do Canarym, composta pelos
nossos Padres, e tresladada pola mao do clerigo Antonio da Silva Bramane
de Margao"

Delio de Mendonca, sj, the current-director of the Xavier Centre of
Historical Research at Alto Porvorim, looks at the 'alvara' (colonial
diktat) that deposed the local language from Goa. Mendonca's view
questions some current views. He writes:

"If the Portuguese empire in the East had dwindled, Goa
nevertheless continued to appear, for the Portuguese at
least, as a very important place to be defended. From 1530,
Goa had become the capital and centre of the Estado da
India and symbol of social and religious unity. Even
in the seventeenth century, Goa was spoken of as the best
territory Portugal had in India. Had the alvara been
implemented, as it is often believed it was, Goa would
suffer the most. But some prefer to see this alvara as
the work of a paranoid viceroy, or that the a

The angel was astounded at the requirements. "Only two hands!? No way! And that's just on the standard model? That's too much work for one day.
Wait until tomorrow to finish." But I won't," God protested. "I am so close to finishing this creation that is soclose to my own heart. She already heals herself when she is sick AND can work 18 hour days." The angel moved closer and touched the woman. "But you have made her so soft, God." "She is soft," God agreed, "but I have also made her tough. You have no idea what she can endure or accomplish." "Will she be able to think?", asked the angel. God replied, "Not only will she be able to think, she will be able to reason and negotiate." The angel then noticed something, and reaching out, touched the woman's cheek. "Oops, it looks like you have a leak in this model. I told you that you were trying to put too much intothis one." "That's not a leak," God corrected,
"that's a tear!" "What's the tear for?" the angel asked. God said, "The tear is her way of expressing her joy, her sorrow, her pain, her disappointment, her love, her loneliness, her grief and her pride." The angel was impressed. "You are a genius, Lord. King of parties goes for gold!

Jamal Shaikh
Sunday, December 11, 2005 17:29 IST

Preparations are in full swing for Vijay Mallya’s 50th birthday bash in Goa
which will be an ‘All Night Long’ affair five times over — yup, Lionel
Richie will also be making his presence felt!

Come Sunday, December 18, and Vijay ‘King of Good Times’ Mallya will turn
50 — and like everything else he does, his birthday will be celebrated in
super duper style.

A five-day extravaganza has been planned on the beaches of Goa from December
16 to 21, personalised invites for which have already been sent out. Two
Kingfisher Airlines Airbus aircraft have been taken off service to ferry
guests to and fro, sources from the airline confirmed.

Since most of the evenings are being planned around the Kingfisher Villa in
Sinquerim, it is assumed that Taj Holiday Village and Aguada would be the
properties that would provide accommodation to the 500-strong invitees.

The buzz is that several high-profile international acts have been planned
as well, and the most looked forward act is Lionel Richie.

The guest-list will include the who’s who of high society, politics,
Bollywood and fashion — though several film people will go only on December
17 after attending the wedding of Fardeen Khan and Natasha Madhvani.

The most heart-warming aspect of the plans, however, is the personalised
letter that Dr Mallya has sent out to his friends. “When I turned 40 a
decade ago, I was fortunate to have been joined by my closest friends over a
three-day celebration that included themed events,” he says.

“While I cross yet another milestone, I am planning an exciting but somewhat
‘chilled out’ series of rendezvous with sun, sand and sea in Goa.” Then he
adds: “Some say that as years advance birthday celebrations fade away. I
believe each year is a blessing and a continuing thanksgiving to God, my
family and to all those who make my life worth living.”

PROTESTORS SERVE 5-DAY ULTIMATUM
Thousands rally against Saturday Nite Bazaar
PERNEM: In what the biggest march of solidarity in Pernem taluka, thousands
of villagers took part in a protest morcha under the banner of 'Goa
Sankritik Rakhan manch' at Chopdem on December 10 to oppose the Saturday
Nite Bazaar, popularly known as Ingo's Bazaar. The protestors carried
placards which symbolically portrayed evils of Saturday Night Bazaar like
drug abuse, crime, terror, AIDS, noi pollution, etc.
At the public meeting held at the Chopdem panchayat campus, after the
rally, many speakers spoke on evils of SNB and urged the panchayat to revoke
the NOC issued to it. Shiv Sena leader Ramesh Naik severely criticised the
local sarpanch, Babli Raut, and Pernem MLA Jeetendra Deshprabhu saying hat
both had no concern for the masses and regretted that they had ignored
culture values by their approval to activity like the SNB. GSRM convener,
Devendra Prabhudesai, served an ultimatum to the panchayat to revoke the NOC
within five days, failing which the agitation would be intensified. (WE-GT)

Goa awakens from its slumber to protect its rights.

Vox Populi. Vox Dei.

God speaks through the humble village folk in a mightier way than his
highpriests speak from the pulpit.

Viva Goa.

“The Great Editorial Robbery” Update 11/12/05

Hi,

It’s been a week, since the last update on “The Great
Editorial Robbery”. In that period, Herald has had a
few, but finally a few original editorials of late.
But the plagiarised ones are now smartly camouflaged
as you may notice later in this posting.

Unfortunately, the river has forked into two
tributaries. Both equally muddy. news articles too are
now being lifted from news agencies like IANS and
foreign newspaper with consistency etc. I had asked a
journalist working at the Herald, as to whether Herald
subscribes to IANS services to which he replied in
negative.

A story which had appeared in THE NAVHIND TIMES,
credited to the IANS was published in the Herald. The
website does not credit the news agency with the story
and neither the THE NAVHIND TIMES.

Another article which has appeared in the
International Herald Tribune by Philip Bowring has
also been reproduced in the Herald with minor changes.

An editorial in the Herald ‘RACISM EXISTS’ has been
largely plagiarised from an NBC article on allegations
by victims of the Katrina tragedy. Chunks from the NBC
article have been reproduced in the Herald edit, with
very subtle changes to stave off chances of tracking
the theft down. The subtle changes are marked by
slashes, while the plagiarised pieces have been
slotted between extended hyphen lines.

Theft at Our Lady of Miracles Church, Badem
ASSAGAO, Dec 11: The parishioners of Our Lady of Miracles Church, Badem,
were shocked to find that burglars entered the church last night and
decamped with a wooden statue of Jesus from the main crucifix, besides
chalices, and other articles. According to John D'Souza (Fenson painters)
and president of the Badem Confraria, the statue was originally valued at
Rs.7500 when it was purchased sometime in 1947. The miscreants also damaged
some of the statues. Police, who traced the altar cloth nearly 500 metres
away with the help of police dogs, are learnt to have found some clues.
(DGNC)

It seems rather surprising that the monolith of the Catholic Church in Goa
is unmoved by the series of robberies in its churches. Any other
organisation would have taken up the issue with the Goa government or
brought its members onto the streets of Panjim to protest government apathy.
The state is duty bound to protect the life and property of its citizens.
This is no longer a BJP-ruled state. Apathy, like charity, begins at home.

Viva Goa.

Miguel

Me thought that a PDF was Short for Portable Document

captures formatting information from a variety of

send formatted documents and have them appear on the

In today's HERALD there is an op-ed by Brig (Retd) I. Da Costa titled
"Dabolim vs Mopa". This is a discursive piece mainly intended in a most
roundabout way to justify the Navy presence at Dabolim. It also concludes by
giving a weak plug for Mopa.

For our purposes the interesting statement is in the middle and reads as
follows:

"Karwar cannot provide close protection to Goa".

Fine. Goa needs protection ONLY because of the naval base at Vasco! But
that's another matter.

So if the quoted line is true then its reverse should also be true viz "Goa
cannot provide close protection to Karwar"!

Who will protect Karwar, the mammoth naval base, in these circumstances?
Will it be a sitting duck without an air base in the premises?

The punch line: If there is such a naval air station at Karwar, why cant it
take on some of the flight training load currently assigned to Dabolim? WHY?
Something the military top brass should be seriously thinking --- and doing
something --- about.

[Goanet] Goa can tackle any disaster if provided frastructure:Experts

Goa can tackle any disaster if provided frastructure:Experts
Panaji, Dec 11 (UNI) Goa is ready to manage any diaster, natural or manmade,
if the government provided adequate infrastructure including communication
facilities for fire, medical and other allied services.

This consensus emerged in the interactive session on ''Terror or Disaster -
Is Goa Prepared?'', organised here today under the aegis of the Inner Wheel
Club of Panaji in association with the Herald daily newspaper, in which
experts from different government wings participated.

All the panelists unanimously felt there was an urgent need to launch a mass
awareness programme, particularly for children and teachers, on do's and
dont's in a disaster and emergency medical management such as the first aid
as part of mitigation exercise in schools.

''Disaster management will be successful through a coordinated
multi-disciplinary approach involving all the concerned wings including the
NGOs in order to save lives and prevent damage to the property,'' the
experts opined.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (crime) Ujjwal Mishra said the police was
prepared to face any eventuality, particularly terrorism, provided the
''security conscious'' public continuously kept the cops informed about the
movement of strangers in the neighbourhood, suspicious activities of new
customers in cyber cafes and unidentified objects lying in public places.

The police, he said, had decided to launch an ad blitz soon to make people
aware about the security concerns in the state before the terrorists'
strikes might affect tourism industry in Goa, as majority of the tourists
who come from countries like UK, Russia and Israel may become vulnerable to
such attacks.

Mr Mishra said the police had also decided to strengthen the mobile control
room networks, besides encouraging formation of ''police-neighbourhood
committees'' like in England for effective feedback and combined policing.

The department, he said, had also planned to train youth as security guards
to assist the cops like in Calangute tourist area where such trained
security guards (about 600) were on the job.

He said the police had also intensified foreigners verification drive, which
also requires public cooperation particularly from the house owners who
should not lent their houses to foreigners or new comers without informing
the police.

All security mechanism had been put in place ever since the terrorists
struck Bali in Indonesia twice and Delhi recently. The public should also
cooperate with the police and be prepared for security checks at
congregations, he added.

Hi Gilbert,

No problem. But please note that neither Alfredo nor I
claimed that Orta was brought before the Inquisition
while he was alive. All relevant articles that I have
read mention that his bones were disinterred and
burned by the inquisition because he was a crypto-Jew.
I will give you the pertinent quotes from two articles
that give the most extensive descriptions on him.

FROM: D'Cruz IA. Garcia da Orta in Goa: pioneering
tropical
medicine. BMJ. 1991 Dec 21-28;303(6817):1593-4.

"As personal physician to people high in Portuguese
governmental and ecclesiastical hierarchies in Goa, da
Orta remained protected from the clutches of the Goan
branch of the Inquisition, which was as suspicious and
predatory toward "new Christians" as was its Iberian
counterparts. However, a year after Garcia da Orta's
death his sister Catarina was burnt at the stake "as
an impenitent Jewess", and in 1580 da Orta's own
remains were exhumed and burnt in an auto-da-fe at Goa
as posthumous punishment for being a crypto-Jew during
life".

FROM: Pandya SK. Medicine in Goa--a former Portuguese
territory. J Postgrad Med. 1982 Jul;28(3):123-48.

"Contrary to the glowing account of his last days by
Gerson da Cunha,[11] d'Orta probably suffered shame
and penury shortly before his death in Goa in 1568.[8]
His wife had to borrow a clean sheet from the
neighbours to wrap his corpse. On December 4, 1580
the final insult was provided by the Tribunal which
condemned him, disinterred his bones and publicly
burnt them at an auto-da-fe at the cathedral in Goa as
a posthumous punishment inflicted on those Jews who
had escaped the stake in their lifetime."

Garcia d'Orta and Nicolas Monardes." Wellcome
