Our halwaldars are very poorly paid while some of the IPS types enjoy the bribes and the bungalows. But whether its because of their highly stressed but poorly paid jobs or just because - some of them are very cruel and inhumane to the most helpless of them all - the street kids, beggars and prostitutes. One incidence that comes to mind is the little street kid that was crushed under the wheels of the police van at the Margao police station. My experience with cops in Goa have all been severely unpleasant. How about yours? Most of us were poorly paid in Goa -I was too. But some government workers seem to take incivility, rudeness and callousness to a higher level. Barring one gentleman from the Goa Civil Service in the Mamlatdar's office in Margao I cant remember anyone with least bit of courtesy or professionalism and believe me I have been to plenty of offices and I still haunt those dusty corridors. As for my comment ..just a few gadgets and some image processing? it was not to minimize the entire police force of India. It was in response to Elisabeth's If you can't manage to get a team trained in forensics, I suggest you rent the enter season of CSI, available on DVD and make your short-pant clad Hawaldars watch it . To clarify I meant that we dont need any high technology from foreign countries or 'training' from our pedestrian American TV - we have plenty of technology (chromatography, etc), great technicians and fine programmers who can set up data bases and develop sophisticated imaging software but unfortunately we also have corruption. Also I am sure Elisabeth was kidding with her CSI reference. Helga . --- I wonder if we're not doing our guardians a great disservice here..just a few gadgets and some image processing?? Sounds rather simplistic. _ Do not post admin requests to the list. Goanet mailing list (Goanet@goanet.org)

My 19 year old intern Kerra could beat them up but then she went for police training when she was only 16 at a summer camp. The girl learned a ton of things at that 6-week camp - first aid, how to slice up a car and pry the passengers out of a wreck etc. I if wonder if the officer cops of the IPS cadre do better? Why should our forensics not be at par with the rest of the world? Its just a few gadgets and some image processing - a piece of cake for our IT dudes. What is not is getting these hawaldars to not put half of the money for equipment in their pockets so they can have a constant supply of batatwadas which I guess is the Indian equivalent of donoughts/donuts? Helga Come on chaps, get with it. What about sketch artists? What about fingerprints? What about some forensics, however basic they maybe. If the answer is yes then has this destruction been documented and included in our school history books? Like you I haven't been following this discussion. Helga Perhaps Hindu temples were destroyed. Perhaps churches were built atop temples. All of that happened in the social and political context of that era. We as Christians today, cannot bear responsibility for it. Communal tolerance in Goa today is tenuous to say the least. The air is thick with tension, especially in certain parts of Goa. Two years back even a benign feast like the Bonderan feast was politicised and religious tension stoked. It didn't take long for the Babri Mosque to fall. It won't take long before the legitimacy of our churches is called into question. Yes, it is nice to sit in our NRI lounge chairs and debate about issues, but in our zeal to debate our point of view, let us also show some restraint and responsibility. Elisabeth __ Do You Yahoo!? Re: [Goanet] Goan Taliban?/to Helga
Thanks Elisabeth. I too wonder why there aren't more women on this forum. Maybe its for the same reason that there aren't any women priests? Actually I am not sure why there aren't any women priests either! We lost Diana a genuine activist probably because she is busy doing something about the growing migrant population that has flooded Nagoa. Then Daisy disappeared along with her recipes which were finding great use with single men in the Middle East. Then there was a woman from the Middle East who posted prayers and nothing but prayers which is the big reason why the young men in the Middle East had to depend on Daisy in the USA for Goan recipes. Viviana has fallen off the radar too probably because she is flying and is on some other radar. Well that's about it - then you came along! Helga Helga, I am becoming a great fan of yours. You tell it like it is. We need more women on this forum. Hurrah for women. Elisabeth _ Do not post admin requests to the list. Goanet mailing list (Goanet@goanet.org)
Re: [Goanet] Goan Taliban?
Why? I am ashamed too. This is not a 'I Look at Goa through UV glasses' forum. Here is a list du jour of I Am Ashamed Items and I am Proud Items. I am Ashamed of: 1) The mindless sheep who flocked to the Inox theater not to view a mere Hollywood movie and then critique it but to stop it from being screened. Maybe that way no one can ask them for their opinion and thus expose their ignorance to the Bible, Christianity and Tom Hanks' hair. 2) The people who did nothing about protecting the safety of children of the Nerul School so a boulder nearly crushed them. 3) The carnage on the streets - 3 bikes accidents today I am proud of: 1) The stellar performance of Ralph Silva at the IIT entrance examinations 2) The young man who bagged the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation scholarship to study the environment. 3) The efforts of the people of the city of Vasco to Go Green. Helga Elisabeth --- Dear Lisa, If you truly ashamed of being a Goan in that case please stay out of Goans public forum. Seja uma senhora boa Thanks, Francis _ Do not post admin requests to the list. Re: [Goanet] Interview with Dr. Filomena Sarawati Giese
I am greatly appreciative of Goa Sudharop and the efforts of its members including Filomena's but I couldn't quite figure out her interview. It seems to me that Goa Sudharop directs its efforts towards the education of young people of Goa but at least in the interview she doesn't mention any conversations she had with young people. If she did and she failed to mention it I would be interested in knowing her opinion. Its they who are the future of Goa. What is their forte and what are the areas they lag behind - it would help all Goan associations to better focus their efforts. After reading her interview I got the impression that she was actually pessimistic but her optimistic character did not allow her to be so.This is in response to Fred's question FN: So is your view of Goa pessimistic, optimistic, or a mix of both? Why so? From my conversations with the young people in India, I come back to the USA with a great deal of admiration for their ambitions, their savvy and their academic achievements. When I compare them to their Western counterparts I feel they lack in a few areas but do immensely better in others. Apropos The future lies in building a bridge between Catholics, Hindus, Muslims to save the values we share. We're not really doing that. I do wish we could do more my question is: Did Filomena speak to any Hindus and Muslims? In Fred's interview she has only mentioned Catholic Goans - I would be interested in knowing what feedback she got from other communities. Finally how does Filomena think her life would have been if her parents had not taken her to Singapore at the age of five. I was raised and educated in Goa so I am interested! Helga Subject: RE: [Goanet] Interview with Dr. Filomena Sarawati Giese Hello George and Fred, Thanks for the letting me know about the interview with Dr. Filomena Giese. I was happy to read about her new perspectives on Goa in the light of her travels through North India. I was happy to know of the roles her parents played in developing her Goan Identity. However, I was surprised that Filomena made no mention of her sister Ligia Brito who like her has been a dynamic force for Goan causes in the San Francisco Bay Area. May their tribe increase. I think my last Tom Hanks movie was Philadelphia. It is the hungama as you aptly call it that is making Dan Brown and Hollywood rich - hair transplants cost a lot! The only ones who are not getting anything (except ulcers) are the hungamistas! I wonder about Dharavi too - but I hope for them. Have you heard of the wonderful things that Vivek de Malar's aunt Dr. Armida Fernandez is doing in Dharavi? Just do a google search and you will read about a true Christian. Take care. Helga RESPONSE: Hollywood annoys me too but are you afraid to shake off that image you have in your mind of Tom Hanks from 'Castaway' ?? .. :-) RESPONSE: I concur !! That was an appropriate take on the sensational/commercial aspects of the world today. With an award-winning actor, Hanks, and award-winning director, Howard, and all this hungama - genuine and otherwise, the movie is bound to break the bank this week. Nevertheless, I hope you caught Floriano's recent kerchief-less trek through Mumbai.;-) I find it unbelieveable that Dharavi will soon morph into something other than the Dharavi that I've always dreaded to drive thru (especially on a 2-wheeler) while going East/West in Mumbai.
