Thank you Mr. Veronica Fernandes for writing few lines about the Brutality
of Invaders against women, in Kuwait, Goa, Bangladesh etc. during the time
of invasion. Your few words have a great morality. Thank you once again.

Tomorrow is the 16th anniversary of the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq. On the
eve of this, I am reproducing the following write-up of mine appeared in
today's local Arab Times. I am sure this may be of some interest and

Knowing the Arabic culture as I do, I have no doubt
whatsoever that rape would have taken place as Iraqis
invaded Kuwait, that summer of 1990. Rape is all to
common in the Arab Muslim culture, mostly unreported
and unspoken of, much too often incestuous. My mother
who worked for 30 years in a hospital, tells of
horrible, horrible stories that would churn even the
most stoic stomach.

 Dear Floriano:

i always read your ramblings with great interest. But
i do not agree with a lot of things that you write.

Fl: Thank you very much. But of course, you are most welcome.

Your fascination with colonial system of justice is
reprehensible. Extra juducial killings, no due process
of law, barbaric treatment of victims of police
brutality, policemen acting like goons are things which
 are not to be emulated.

FL: You are generalising Colonial Justice system on the one incident I
related which happens to be true. I wouldn't do that. There is an over-all
track record of excellent justice by the colonizers of which the Indian
Juducial system can take a page from and learn.

You are making the same mistake that the Gujratis do
when they believe that rather than follow the due
process of the law, a progrom against minorities is a
effcient way of teaching them a lesson.

FL; I didn't say that. You are saying it. Even then, what you say is right
by all means.

Your belief is as intolerant as any one else's.
Fl: Glad to note that there are others who share my beliefs.

can you please shed light on the follwoing:

 1. was any evidence submitted against the timber
contractor in a court of law?

Fl: Dictators or military governments do not follow democratic norms. I will
have to ask the contractor's people if they did file an appeal. If they did,
then there should be a meticulous record of the proceedings. The Colonizers
were know for their record keeping.

 2. were any other higher ups in the forest department
 invesigated and punished?

Fl: I shall have to open-up the archives to find out that. But let me tell
you that I am not in the least interested. I have a fatalistic attitude.
That is because I believe that at that time, the law was right.

 3. was agent monterio investigated for causing a
 unlawful death in custody?

Fl: On the contrary, I think he got a promotion.

4.was there any proof that proved that the cntractor
 gave a supari?

Fl: His( contractor's) death through extreme torture, for one. Or did he
commit suicide??? One will never know.

BTW ,Uday bhembres response regarding the mala
vandalism is correct. Karmalis act is a illegal act
but doesnt come under the definition of terrorism.

Fl: So also the act of the demolition of the Babri Masjid by Karmali's BJP.
But that act opened the doors for terrorism in India, Modi's Gujarat, for
one. That is exactly what Uday Bhembre said in his speech justifying my
disagreement wit his interpretation.

Govt. Public Notice on Purchase of Properties in Goa by foreigners

PUBLIC NOTICE

PURCHASE OF PROPERTIES IN GOA BY FOREIGNERS

It has come to the notice of the Government that in violation of
Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999, and RBI instructions
issued from time to time, foreign nationals (excluding NRIs PIOs)
are buying immovable property in Goa. This has caused great
consternation in the minds of the public and has unnaturally affected
the real estate market in the State. It has also caused great concern
to the State Government that such activities, in violation of existing
legislation, are being carried out rampantly.

Therefore, the State Government hereby cautions and warns all
foreign nationals as stated above to abide by all RBI instructions and
circulars with respect to acquisition of immovable property.

Such foreign nationals are also advised to study the Clause 6 (3) (i)
of Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 read with FEMA
Notification No. FEMA 21/2000-RB dated 3rd May 2000 and Master
Circular No. 05/2005-06 dated 1st July 2006 available on
website http://www.ribi.org.inwww.ribi.org.in which deals with the
acquisition of
immovable property by such foreign nationals before intending
to by any property in Goa.

Land Owners wishing to sell their land to such foreign nationals
are also advised not to pay heed to the agents who facilitate such
transactions, but acquaint themselves with the Foreign Exchange
Management Act, 1999 and the instruction of RBI in the matter of
immovable property by such foreign nationals. In case of any doubt,
the Revenue or the Finance Department of the State Government
may be contacted for seeking explicit clarifications.

The State Government will take appropriate action against all existing
defaulters who have acquired immovable property illegally and in
violation of the existing provisions of law.

Issued by
Revenue Department,.

What is Romi Konkani Script and what suggestions do you have to furthur the
cause, I am aware a lot of our people have fogetten where they came from as
they contribute to the economies of the countries they live in their only
escape from all their worries is to saunter from Dance to Dance.A magnet
causes like poles to repel and opposite poles to attract, is it the Indian or
Portuguese gene over generations that causes this attitude problem in getting
two Christain Goans to agree.I know that Rene took the lead and where there is
no order there will always be disorder. The theme this year is EXCELLENCE
THROUGH UNITY lets work on the Konkani issue along with all the other jobs to
be done in making Goa an excellent place on Earth within this generation. I am
happy to coordinate the jobs with appropriate volounteer professionals and

I had posted a query long ago on goanet about world goa day yahoo group

This post was blocked and not allowed to appear on goanet and i had a

do not understand why it was censored and didnt appear on goanet.

From Geroge Pinto's recent mail(WGD origin)on Goanet , I have now
learnt the answer to my query long ago as to who the moderator of the
WGD yahoo group was! and also why the membership was denied as a result
of being unapproved within 14 days.

I still need to know why Bosco decided my post was not to appear on

asked)instead.

Simon Gonsalves all set to release 1st Konkani VCD film CHOVIS VORAM

Rock Raaga presents AVERLY PRODUCTIONS' 1st Konkani VCD film titled CHOVIS
VORAM, written and directed by Kuwait-based Simon Gonsalves and produced by
Rajesh A. Bhosale. The VCD is scheduled for release in August in Kuwait,
Goa Mumbai (India) and worldwide. Watch out!
For more info, visit www.rockandraaga.com or email [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You heard it first at :
 www.goa-world.com

 About Simon Gonsalves:
Little did anyone know that a simple lad born a few decades ago in Panchwadi
would rise to be an indomitable star of the Konkani stage. An actor of
exceptional talent, winner of several awards for acting, a good singer,
composer and producer of Konkani audio albums, a playwright who has penned
noteworthy scripts and directed many tiatros, Simon Gonsalves has entered the
chronicles of tiatr history in Goa and Kuwait.

In a candid chat with us, Simon, a multi-talented artiste talked about his
voyage in the drama foyer in an incredibly short span of time.

Simon's immense talent and stage capabilities were first noticed by his
village folks when he went up the stage to participate in a Kunnbi dance for a
school gathering. People, amazed at his poise and graceful stage presence,
prompted him to take up acting in tiatros.

Landing with his first character role of a police inspector in a village
tiatro, and later Bab Agnel D'Costa's Xapai Simon went on excelling in every
performance that followed on the stage and the Carnaval khells in which he had
become a name to reckon with.

With explosives of hidden talents, Simon wanted to go cross milestones with
his blazing talent. Simon discovered his multi-faceted acumen when he
excelled in his directorial debut venture in 3 consequent tiatros in his
village, two of which were written by Bab Santan de Xelvon and other by
Reginald de Panchwadi.
A meticulous eccentric perfectionist that he is, Simon personally painted the
boards, (as is the practice even now, where every village advertises on a
piece of painted wood/ Formica board giving details of the drama - this board
is usually kept at the tinttos/main area of activity of the village).

The appreciation and fame poured in from every angle except his family. Simon
longed for his family's support to further his acting career. His family had
cleared their stand with him, they were dead against the tiatr and tiatr
world. But Simon had a mission; he had to carry the flaming torch of Konkani
tiatro. He determined to change their minds with his appreciable work.

A few years later, Simon moved to Kuwait for his livelihood after a fellow
villager, Peter D'Souza, helped him to get a visa to Kuwait. With a heavy
heart, sitting aboard the flight from Goa to Kuwait, Simon realized that he
will miss his life-long passion in Kuwait. With a few tiatros being staged in
Kuwait, Simon saw minimal chances of himself working on the stage.

But God had other plans for him. Jeff de Assolna who knew his abilities and
casted him in his tiatr Bhik in Kuwait. Thereafter Bab Rafael de Majorda
cast him in his maiden venture ALIZA where Simon ignited the stage with his
acting finesse. His role as an errant husband going astray teamed with Jane,
another equally talented artiste of Kuwait and Betty Naz a very prominent
actress of Konkani films and stage is still remembered by the tiatr audiences.
With a perfect dialogue delivery matched with precise stage angles and
presence left audience desiring for more of this newly developed stage
persona. Later his acting career got a boost with his portrayal of negative
character role in Mario de Majorda's tiatr Anvddo staged in December 2000.

Not satisfied, Simon had his sights focussed on greater heights. He opted to

Nasci, You are conveniently restricting yourself to a frame of
reference where you know you probably won't find inconvenient
evidence. If you look at the globe, you will find gross injustices
and bigotry from a number of persons who are Christian. So, I wonder
why you lash out at people of other faiths in all your writing.

Of course, I am not one of those who sees history as a clash of
civilisations (read: faith beliefs). Religion is just the clothing.
At the root, we are much the same, and share our fears, desires,
goals, dreams, idiosyncracies

In India/Goa, the freedom for religious practice, is
isolated to parts of the country; and is effectively
stymied by the majority Hindus (caste Hindus) in
large parts of the country. How about that?

In India, we have had religious freedom and tolerance in greater
measure than some of the Western (read WASP) countries you admire.
What we have been seeing since the mid-nineties is not the doings of
Hinduism. It stems from Hindutva (a political ideology, not to be
confused with the religion Hinduism). This reflects the intolerant,
bigoted fringe, which is trying to seize control of Hinduism and play
the role of a self-appointed spokesperson. Just as people of your ike
represent the intolerant, bigoted fringe of their own religions.

I am sure just because one Nasci holds the views he does, it can't be
held against all Christians and shown as proof that they are a bigoted
people.

RUT of caste discrimination and effects of 'animal
 worship' in their societies!!

Lastly, let me register my protest at your attempts to pour ridicule
on another religious tradition -- it's very easy to criticise The
Other -- every time you post. Each response is another excuse to blast
a religion which you obviously don't even understand, though your
ancestors belonged to it. To call Hindus animal worshippers is akin to
saying that Catholics worship wood, because of all the statues in the
churches. I really don't mean to hurt anyone's feelings and religious
beliefs here, but just want to show how ludicrous such arguments could
get.

Nascy, prior to shooting your mouth (based on what your grandmum told
you as a kid), you can easily check the Net. For instance, from the
Hinduism true-or-false series:

http://www.buildingwithbooks.org/res/isp/hinduism/HinduismTF.html
Hindus believe in treating all living things equally and have high
regard for animals, especially the cow. Many Hindus believe that the
cow is a living symbol of mother earth. In early agricultural times,
the cow, thought to have been the first animal Hindus domesticated,
provided a lot for families, including milk, milk products, labor, and
dung. Because cows would give all its possessions for the benefit of
others, they were thought of as one of the most important parts of the
family. Hindu scriptures prohibit cow slaughter for these reasons.

Hindus do not worship gods, instead they worship animals like
Elephants and Monkeys. FALSE - Hindus see divinity in all living
creatures therefore, animals also occupy an important place in Hindu
Dharma. One example is Hanuman, the monkey god. He is a devotee of
Sri Rama and is worshipped by millions of people in India – this is
because Hanuman is the embodiment of devotion, dedication and
strength. Many people have seen images of Ganesh (Ganapati) the
'elephant god' as well. There are many myths around how this deity
(who is actually not an elephant) received an elephant head.

[I would prefer replacing the word 'myths' with the word 'beliefs'.
After all, all religion is made up of 'myths' or 'beliefs', depending
on how you see it. So is all political ideology. Even, our debates on
Goanet is based on a lot of myths, at time!]

Peace, and don't pour scorn on the beliefs of others please. At the
end of the day, what you believe in, is a matter of faith. As long as
it makes you a better human being, does it matter? FN

Dear Fred:

frankly speaking, I expected a more to the point
response from you.

FN :Unlike you, I don't see things in terms of being
pro-Muslim, anti-Hindu, or pro-Christian.
Me: well Fred, a noble sentiment indeed albeit a very
naive one. Political correctness apart we all know the
VHP is pro hindu, the Milli Council is pro
muslimthe Akalis are pro sikh and so on. Then there
are some who are pro left or pro right.

FN: Why are you so upset with an attempt to hold an
anti-communalism camp in Goa in mid-August? Do you
feel this would
expose the real communalists?

Me: Not at all, expose the communalists every where
you see them! In fact I am doing that myself here
because i think we should not allow biased
organizations like PUCL from exploiting a genuine
issue to push forward their twisted agenda.

FN: PUCL is a prominent Indian organisation that has
been doing much appreciated work for years.
Me: The Sangh parivar is much much more prominent
organization with than PUCL and there are a
significant number of people who appreciate their
work. Ask the Gujratis who voted overwhelmingly for
Modi in the civic elections.

FN: From there, you move on to make unsubstantiated
charges against one of the most respected human rights
lawyers in India, Nandita Haksar.
Me: i just said that the white paper carried a lie
that there was a grenade attack on masjid in priol.
you never provided any evidence to the contrary.
Please point me to the post where I have made
unsubstantiated charges against ms haksar.by the way
i dont consider her most respected or renowned at
all.

FN: Vivek goes on to lambast the PUCL
Me: lambast ? i just copied excerpts from the report
they released on Solapur riots along with my comments.
Please lambast me with your views on the specific
comments I made.

FN: I think the so-called non-Goans like Nandita
Haksar and Vidyadhar Gadgil have done a great job in
standing up for the truth, much more than what we
so-called Goans could hope to achieve in three
lifetimes
Me: you are free to speak for your self fred , please
dont be unduly self deprecating of all Goans. As far
as three lifetimes go, dont believe in reincarnation
:-) I dont know about vidyadhar but there is nothing
so called about the Goanness of ms haskar. She IS a
non-goan.

Fred, i would be very happy if you respond to the
specific comments I raised regarding the Sholapur riot
paper as well as this post.

Dear Fred:

I am not playing a game and I dont think I am very
smart either.

As far as pseudonyms are concerned there are allmost
8000 plus netters whom I dont even know. As per some
peoples own admission they use nom de plumes and
maybe many post under more than one name.

Just because some one signs off with a name and a last
name along with a place doesnt mean that the person is
real.

On a open forum such as this one what matters is the
content. As long as some one is civil and raises
relevant points there need not be any issue regarding
the identity of the poster.

if Vidhyadhar Gadgil or you or any one else has a
right to freely circulate reports which in my opinion
are biased and malicious I have every right as well as
a responsibilty to ask for clarifications. Such a
demand is a perfectly reasonable one too.

Please dont vilify me as comunal or bigotted just
because i do not share your admiration for PUCL or
nandita haskar.

All your arguments seem to be centred on the following
premise:

PUCL and the nandita haskar led brigade is the de
facto secular orgnization. Either one is with them and
agrees to whtever they have to say or one is communal
and bigotted.

Very much like the you are eithe withus or against
us
Bush doctrine.

I proved to you that the broken peace report has one
LIE in it regarding the Priol grenade blast.

The report carries the following malicious
insinuations

1. that Sunaparant and sandesh prabhudesai is
communal because it provides column space to velingkar

2. all cross vandalizations as well as mosque
desecrations have been carried out by Sangh parivar
sympathisers/activists.

The above assertions are not only malafide and highly
biased but are also unproven in any established court
of law.

By the same logic is every temple burglary carried out
by muslims?

if you remember a huge hue and cry was raised
regarding the bomb explosions in a vasco church and
all the righteous noises about the RSS and Jp being
comunal were made, but it was proven to be the handi
work of some non goan muslims associate with the SIMI.

No one thought it fit to apologise to the sangh
parivar for having blamed them needlessly.

Further more i raised some issues regarding the
Solapur riots report. You have conveniently chosen
not to reply to any of those issues.

As a senior journalist , frankly I expected a lot more
from you after having read some of yur previous posts.

I had in fact mentioned in my first post that
Vidhyadhar can choose to answer my questions or can
villify me as a communal or a sangh parivar stooge.
Sadly you have done exactly that!

A visit to Colvale

My father told me that Colvale is the last village of Bardez before
you reach Pernem. We went to a church in the village, which is near
the riverside. We saw some crabs, and my brother was screaming because
he was very happy, like a little imp.

Colvale is a nice riverside village, where you can play and all. We
bought some nice 'chakli' from Colvale and we liked it very much.

We went to a quiet side and saw a boat. There was a long stick. It was
a big one but didn't look hard at all. My brother was breaking some
pieces of the stick and throwing it in the water. He was having such
good fun at Colvale.

We left at 6.30 and reached at 7 o'clock sharp. Then we went to
Florentine and got some chicken cafreal. My brother was very happy.
But the chicken was very spicy.

Me and my mama ate the chicken, but it was too spicy for my brother.
If any of you want to go to Colvale, you'll might a very good time
there.

The beautiful fields in Goa

We have many fields in Goa, in front of people's houses.

Fields are very important. Children go in the water, and some children
play in the water. In the monsoon season, they also get baby fishes
and snails. The children collect it. The children love the fields.

For big people it also has a use. The big people grow their paddy. And
the big people also collect snails to eat. A field is very important.

In front of house, there is a field. The dogs run and play in it. I
will name three dogs -- Pretinho, Blacky and Sultan. In the evening or
afternoon, they run in the field and play. They must be running in the
morning also, but I never see them because I'm at school.

That's why fields are so important. The ending of my story: the fields
of Goa are so beautiful and you can get good value from them.Like
good-value toys.

There are brief reports of the tragedy in The Times (UK) of Jul 18 and
19 1947.

However, googling, I came across a fuller description in the Times of
India Relief Fund Appeal which is copied below.

The account was probably written soon after the disaster. There is no
reference to Goa or Goans. It reports that “most people on the ship
belonged to the lower sections of society living in the Girgaum and
Parel.” The people in those areas were largely mill workers. The poorer
Goans lived in Dobitalao. Moreover the ship was sailing from Bombay to
Rewas which is about the same latitude as Pune.

Curiously, the wreckage of the ship disappeared after the disaster and
resurfaced a decade later

Source: The Times of India Relief Fund at
http://www.timesrelieffund.com/ramdasship/ramdas.htm

Full text: Ramdas Ship Disaster (1947)

It is, perhaps, one of the worst shipping disasters off Bombay to date.
At 10 a.m. on July 17, 1947, the 406-ton Ramdas sank near Gull Island,
ten miles from the Colaba Point. Over 600 of the 700-odd people aboard
the ship, which was bound for Rewas, died. According to the master of
the ship, Sheikh Suleman Ibrahim, the ship had been streaming ahead at
slow speed after leaving at 8.05 a.m., when it was struck by a high
swell on the starboard side. All the passengers from this side rushed to
the port side, which became overweight and resulted in the ship listing
heavily and capsizing within the next two minutes. Strangely, there were
no reports of rough weather on the morning of July 17.

In fact, the port authorities had no inkling of the tragedy until a few
of the survivors swam to safety and reached the Sassoon Docks and
related the news at 3 p.m. After a two-day search operations by a fleet
of naval, Port Trust and mercantile vessels rounded up about 155
survivors. According to reports, most people travelling aboard Ramdas
belonged to the lower sections of society living in the Girgaum and
Parel areas of Bombay. Although an extensive search was launched by Port
authorities no wreckage was found immediately after the disaster.
However, a decade later, the wreckage resurfaced on its own at Ballard
Pier off Bombay Coast.

In order to help families who had to deal with the twin tragedies of
losing their dear ones as well as suffer economic hardships due to the
loss of their bread-winner, The Times of India Relief Fund set up a
special fund to collect donations for their benefit. The Governor of
Bombay also contributed Rs. 1,000 to the fund, which was disbursed
between government and local agencies involved in relief operations.

Dear Fred,

Since Aug 20 is almost upon us, a quick possibility for this year to make WGD
meaningful: Jose
Colaco suggested a few months ago that WGD could remember/celebrate Abbe Faria
this year, his
250th anniversary.

I would urge Goan organizations to go to the website created by Dom Martin at
http://www.abbefaria.com/ and:
1. Sign the petition as it can still get the Indian authorities to commemorate
Abbe Faria with a
stamp.
2. Print Abbe Faria's bio as a flyer and distribute to those in attendance or
in the newsletter.
3. Perhaps have a discussion about the man.
4. It may be too late to purchase the video from Cecil Pinto/Isabel Santa Rita
Vas, otherwise that
could be shown. I am assuming the video is available for purchase.

This is only a suggestion. Goans could so something similar for any other
noteworthy Goan instead.
Btw, Goa Sudharop remembered Abbe Faria at a function on June 25 this year and
the audience was
very appreciative. Almost everyone came up and said to me that they never heard
of him and were
thankful for the information.

The bold move of your Indian National Congress Party

language/script issue (Marathi and Roman script) is
well taken and appreciated.

If there is no vocal or written expression of this

However rest assured that the votaries to this
amendment to the Goa Daman Diu Official language Act
1987 will accept this as an excellent decision
slowly but surely and make it popular to Goans world

For once Goans can rest assured that the divisive

In particular it must be placed on record that this

It's really unfortunate that we're having this dispute over who
started World Goan Day and how. In my books, George Pinto is a great
guy, not given to petty bickering. Likewise, Rene is also
well-intentioned, even if sometimes he makes himself the target of

Both have contributed vastly to networking Goans and building positive

all sides concerned to put their back on this, look to the future, and
work together to achieve more? Rene, it would be nice if the efforts

Gilbert,

Almost everything you have written in response to the
data that I provided in reply to your own request, is
inconsequential, erroneous or trite (Please see the
above quote for example). I will just point out some
misrepresentations and misconceptions in it.

You started by saying you were not going to respond
to innuendo (good). Then you went on to provide a
whole bunch of innuendos (not good). In supplying the
statistics, you intermixed the US data with India
data. The latter appeared to be a combination of
contemporary data with what existed 100 years ago
(grandmother's era).

I suspect you don’t understand the meaning of the word
innuendo. Please look it up in a standard English
dictionary. Your assertion that I mixed Indian data
with U.S. data is utterly bogus. I only provided U.S.
data. I do not have access to Indian data as yet. The
statements regarding my grandmother and great
grandmother were made because you asked for
information about India, and what I have stated is
common knowledge among Indians. They are also
pertinent facts with regard to morality because
child-marriage is now regarded as inappropriate,
immoral and abusive.

As an example you refer to US data on teen-age
mothers (likely school dropouts) who have children
out of wedlock (some with multiple fathers) living in
single parent homes surviving on the government's
safety net. This is compared (favorably) to our
(Indian) grandmother's social structure where the
young girls were married and living in a joint-family
system with an immense amount of near and extended
family and social support system.

Pure garbage. I have made no such comparison. I
provided actual numbers only for the U.S.

You also find a good similarity of single-parent
homes (mistakenly termed single family homes) due to
divorce in modern society to widowed parents in
traditional societies.

Hogwash. There are widowed parents in all societies.
Divorce is also present in all societies. Some old
religions have allowed divorce (indeed, made it easy
to obtain a divorce) for the past hundreds of years
e.g. Islam.

In the U.S., according to the 2001 census, 10.6% of
the women are currently widowed and 10.8% divorced.

I did not include rape etc as a separate end-point
because I had to stop somewhere to make it easier on
you.

Sorry that the actual numbers I provided are harder
for you to digest. Sorry for making things
uncomfortable for you.

Yet that and other social situations would be
reflected under prison population. This statistic
(per thousand population) is much higher in the
modern / western world that in traditional societies.

Nonsense. The incarceration rates are much lower for
all other western or technologically advanced
countries. U.S. is an exception. Here are the
incarceration rates for several developed countries.

U.S. – 714 per 100,000 population
Canada – 116 per 100,000 population
England and Wales – 142 per 100,000 population
France – 91 per 100,000 population
Germany – 96 per 100,000 population
Spain – 140 per 100,000 population
Netherlands – 123 per 100,000 population
Denmark – 70 per 100,000 population
Norway – 65 per 100,000 population
Sweden – 75 per 100,000 population
Japan – 58 per 100,000 population
Australia – 117 per 100,000 population

- These are February 2005 numbers obtained from the
International Centre for Prison Studies
King’s College London – School of Law (Sunith Velho
had nothing to do with this information).

So with due respects, using your pro-science and
logical bent, your comparative statistical
conclusions, have little meaning. You have on purpose
chosen to make sarkem goddxem zalam.

Gilbert, Do you remember that the numbers I provided
were requested by you? Are you now disappointed that
they do not support your case?

Contrary to your understated numbers, in contemporary
western societies, the divorce rates is close to 50%
of all marriages.

Interesting... George, as usual, makes some useful points. What would
others suggest as ways to make World Goa Day more meaningful? Rene, we
take your silence as a promise that you will settle the issue of
origins of this day (and give credit where it's due) at the earliest
possible occasion... but not so early that it derails this year's
event :-)

Some questions to everyone, just to ponder about (and debate
endlessly, as is our wont as Goans!): How can the organisers involve
more people in such an event? How can an event such as this cut across
the traditional divides that have split Goans into eight or twelve
different communities -- by community, caste, geography, gender etc?
How do we celebrate that which is relevant to us all, instead of only
getting caught up in highly negativist perspectives (whether it's
about foreigners grabbing our land or migrants coming to take our jobs
and boost crime here)?

It's probably time for those interested to actively work to shed this
image (actually, it's true!) of Goans never being able to get their
act together, being very much prone to infighting, and being big
talkers and poor do-ers.

We at Goanet Admin have tried to take a supportive stance towards this
event, even if there are some thorny issues that probably need to be
ironed out before it can move further on.

So Goanetters, just go ahead and tell us what you can do to mark this
day, even if there's no Goan community around you, or you're 16ish and
hate the style your parents traditionally celebrate their Goanity, you
lack fluency in Konkani (for no fault of your own), or are stuck
somewhere in Antarctica (thank goodness that Helga and Joaquim are
back home!)

Just some suggestions. Everyone's addition to this list is welcome:

1. Review a book related to Goa (preferably one you didn't publish),
and circulate it online.
2. Buy a book by a Goan author.
3. Share a (preferably low-cholesterol) Goan recipe through cyberspace.
4. Try to understand something about a religion from Goa other than your own.
5. Start to build an alumni institution for your school in Goa (or the diaspora)
6. Write or edit an e-book related to Goa (it could be published someday).
7. Say good things about 10 Goans you know (don't forget others too).
8. Invest in a village magazine-library of your choice -- it's a
long-term investment!
9.Volunteer to build Goa-related information on http://en.wikipedia.org
10. Introduce someone you know to Goanet.

[The last one was a commercial, as in advertising for something one is
involved with. But we need that too!]

And let's keep reminding Rene about implementing his
footballs-for-Goan-kids idea (and what was the other one he
mentioned?)

--FN

PS: The list is obviously biased with my interests in mind. But others
could have lists with their own perspectives.

PPS: I'm really not very chauvinistic about being a Goan, and believe
it to be an accident of birth. In my next life, I would probably (and
going by probability too) be a good candidate for being a non-Goan
myself. Yet, it's nice, and warm and fuzzy, to identify with any
grouping, and help build social capital. But can we do this without
having to say derogatory and nasty things about The Other (i.e. people
who are not us)?

Colvale is a nice riverside village, where you can play and all. We

The posting by Gilbert Menezes related the story of the capsizing of the SS
Ramdas.
This occured in 1947 NOT 1949. I distinctly remember the year and the
incident, as our family was in India on home leave from British East Africa
and I was all of 8 years old. The capsizing was big news at the time. I
still remember the older folks discussing how the ship capsized. Some said
that all the passengers rushed to one side of the ship and that caused it to
capsize. Although I was very small, the story
is clear in my mind, as I was terrified about taking the ship from Goa to
Bombay after that incident.

The vexed language issue has resurfaced on the Goan horizon, again threatening
to divide Goan society, which has lived a peaceful co-existence since pre-
liberation, on communal basis as it did nearly 20 year ago.

Seeing this peaceful co-existence firsthand, the late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru
had appealed to the people of a freshly liberated Goa to always maintain their
unique identity amidst mainstream India as Goa had a lot to teach the rest of
India on communal harmony. However, today there is a potential time-bomb set
ticking by unscrupulous politicians for very selfish gains in the form of
script issue regarding the official language of the state. These hedonistic
forces are out to destroy Goa and Goans by a great communal divide. Hence, my
brethren BEWARE!

Goa is geographically, historically, genetically and culturally an integrated
part of the konkan region and obviously the mother tongue in this konkan
region is Konkani which is written either in Devanagiri or Romi depending on
the manner in which Konkani is spoken in that region.

This is an undisputed fundamental truth and has no nexus whatsoever with
religious sentiments of the people of the region. However, the partisan
forces actively at work in the state, operating in a subtle manner, have
twisted the script issue to such illogical conclusions that they have very
slyly brought on the Marathi language which is a language of the Maratha
region and are trying to project the same as the official language of Goa.

This is a paradox as the language of the Marathas cannot be claimed to be the
mother tongue of the Konkani?s of Goa. Agreed that the Maratha region
having common boundaries and historical links with the Konkan region, there is
an overlap and integration of cultures of both regions.

If Marathi should be the official language of Goa of the Konkan region, then
it would be justifiable to make Konkani the official language in Maharashtra
of the Maratha region.

This is taking the language imbroglio to its logical conclusion.

We, the people of Goa, had fought a war with divisive forces twenty years ago
on the language issue and justifiably Konkani was made the official language
of Goa after due deliberations.

Konkani is the sole official language of the State of Goa in both it?s
variants ? Devanagiri Romi.

Now that I understand your thinking better, I think
your offer makes sense. I will do what I can to

Even in the issue of road safety, which is immediate,

nebulous and controversial, and the ones actually
risking their money may have their own ideas.

These things take time, because it is far easier for

While I didn't need science to tell me that many

I believe that EVIL people exist among both the

the evil ones in the latter group fear God? If they

Perhaps the use of the phrase turned out to be is

not to be.

This is a facile mistake to deliberately make,
especially by recent converts to atheism, as the

This is the benefit, after all, of having a formal
moral code to return to. However, unlike their
previous God-fearing posture, this one better be real,
because it is the one that counts.

Of course, if the atheists turn out to be right, it
will all be moot:-))

[Goanet] Language Controversy - Press Statement for kind publication

The Goa Su-Raj Party has been watching the language imbroglio for some time
and would like to break its silence on the issue in the aftermath of the
CLP's (Congress Legislature Party) reported decision to accord 'Official
Status to Marathi along with the official status for Roman script for
Konkani as demanded by the Romi Lippi protagonists.

The Party would like go on record of stating as under:-

1.That 'Marathi' is the language of Maharashtra.

2. That Marathi is not the mother tongue of Goans or any section of Goans.

3. The recent agitation by Goa's 'Romi Lippi' protagonists (culminating in
the 'Tiatrist Fraternity' giving ultimatum to the Goa government to include
Roman Script in sec 2(c) of the Goa Daman Diu Official Language Act,
1987) was just limited to the inclusion of Roman script alongside the
Devnagri script.

4. How the decision to accord recognition to a particular script be equated
to giving recognition and equal status to Marathi with the mother tongue of
Goans is not at all understood, nor is it explained on what authority the
CLP arrogates to itself the power to resurrect an issue which is already
dead. The recent agitation by the Marathi lobby was against the introduction
of the English language as a subject in the Marathi medium schools and not
for asking for the official status for Marathi in Goa. This decision by the
'CLP' is mischievous and is meant to create turmoil within the Goan society
in the same manner that the then Congress president of the Goa Congress unit
Mrs. Sulochana Katkar raised the issue of Marathi language when the demand
by Konkani protagonists for Official status was put forward. She, along with
the Congress Party, was totally responsible in awakening the Marathi lobby
which after the 'opinion poll' had not pursued the issue for the
recognition of Marathi as the other Official language of Goa.

5. The present Congress party in Goa is composed of many elements which at
one time were the pillars in the Maharastrawadi Gomantak Party which
spearheaded the demand for the merger of Goa into Maharashtra, thereby
seeking to destroy the unique identity of Goans. Today, the same elements,
having left the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party's sinking ship to join and
gain ascendance in the Congress Party, are now bent upon bringing hordes of
Maharashtrians into Goa through equal recognition of the Marathi language to
compensate for having not succeeded in merging Goa into Maharashtra. On the
one hand we have the Congress led government making promises that the
industries being set-up in Goa will employ Goans. On the other hand we have
the BJP justifying the unrest in Goa (as witnessed through the
Savordem-Curchorem riots), lulling the Goan public into believing that all
of them have interests of Goans at heart. Both these parties are 'snakes in
the grass' as is apparent from the present move, which more than anything
else, will sound the death knell of the Goan identity and ethos, thereby
achieving their hidden agenda which is the common aim of the BJP and the
mergerists, namely , that of destroying the culture that defines Goans in
general.

5. The precedent of seeking to make Marathi the official language of Goa, if
carried out, will also give to the other settlers such as the Kanadigas; the
Biharis; etc., a few generations from now, the right to demand the same
privileges in Goa as the one sought to be given to the Marathi language.

6. In this moment of deep crisis, the repercussions of which not yet been
fully understood by bonafide Goans, the Goa Su-Raj Party urges and exhorts
all Goans, not only in Goa but also Goans all over the world, to register
their vociferous protests against this malafide and dangerous move by the
Congress led coalition government in Goa, irrespective of their religious
beliefs and political preferences, NOW, before it is too late.

--- Vivek [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 1. Walmart(and other behemoth retailers) destroy
local economies, local culture as well as local
 environment.

Mario responds:

Vivek,
You have now trodden into something I am familiar.

As a student and businessman I have been observing the
advent and growth of super stores and spermarkets for
decades. The only reason I mention this is that I
have heard it all before. There has always been
resistance from those who have something to lose,
mainly unions and small competitors unable or
unwilling to compete, and joyful acceptance from the
rest of the population who benefit considerably from
lower prices as the dynamic US economy adjusts and
flexes to changing conditions, but marches inexorably
forward.

Inspite of all the same old dire warnings, which I was
surprised to see you repeat, some small stores have
gone out of business, while others have found ways to
compete, usually not on price, but on service and
convenience, which the huge stores are short on.

Small convenience stores are flourishing on almost
every street corner in every American city. Guess who
owns a significant number of them? Indian and Arab
immigrants with the classic can-do American
attitude.

You say, Walmart (and other behemoth retailers)
destroy local economies, local culture as well as
local environment.

Sounds plausible in static theory, but rarely
materializes in practice. Since Walmart came on the
scene the US economy has more than doubled and the
unemployment rate is down below 5%.

The local environment? Everyone is required to follow
the same environmental standards as everyone else.
Stores like Walmart are usually ahead of the game,
anticipating the critics, and giving them one less
thing to criticize.

What you are quoting is the official union line, not
that of consumers - whom I think represent the local
economy and local culture far better than the
dwindling number of union members. Consumers flock to
Walmarts across the country, not to mention Walmart's
low frills first cousin, Sam's Club, and competitors
like Cosco. Others who have figured out the new
global economy, are booming as well. For example,
Target Stores, Kohls, Value City, Best Buy, Circuit
City, Home Depot, Lowe's, Menard's, etc. The one's
struggling to keep up are the champions of
yesteryear like Sears and K-Mart, and perhaps some
smaller stores that are unable to compete any more,
just like buggy makers and whip makers and farriers of
a previous era. These move on to do something else.

Vivek writes:

The walmart that u see outside of your window will
probably be a huge empty box once Walmart has
realised its ROI. That is not planned development,
that is called urban sprawl. Please dont confuse
 that with planned development.

Mario observes:

Anything is possible, but I wonder how you calculated
that probability, Vivek?

A retail store becomes an empty box not because they
have realized their ROI, but because they are failing
to do so. There are many such companies that dot the
business landscape in the US. Economist Joeseph
Schumpeter called it creative destruction - in with
the new, out with the old. This is the principle that
distinguishes the US from old Europe and other
traditional countries. The US economy has no
tolerance for obsolete business models. In the US
it's considered a good thing, not necessarily for the
owners and employees of course, but for everyone else
who make up the majority of the population.

Why do you think President Bush encourages outsourcing
and opposes protectionism? Responsible for the entire
country, he knows what most of us prefer. The choice
of low prices with less service, or higher prices with
more service and convenience. The providers of these
choices co-exist.

Regarding urban sprawl, neither Walmart nor anyone
else can build a single store in the US without first
receiving approval from the local Zoning Board, which
is required by law to maintain the urban planning
standards established for that community? This is no
longer the wild west, you know. We have local elected
politicians who intervene in these things, for our
benefit:-)) If they mess up, we throw the rascals
out at the next election.

Vivek writes:

 2. Your assertion that walmart and others are
welcomed by americans is also open to debate. The
poll that i quoted as well as one conducted by
university of Mass at lowell found out that
