[Goanet] Churches and temples in the UAE
By Bassma Al Jandaly, Gulf News Reporter Dubai: UAE is known for its tolerance and respect for other religions and residents can freely pray at a Hindu temple, a Christian Church or a Sikh Gurudwara. Most non-Muslim worshippers hold their main mass or services on Fridays. Non-Muslims can enter mosques here but are advised to wear modest clothing and women must cover their head. The churches and temples in the UAE were built more than 35 years ago. According to the residency law of the country, those who employ a non-Muslim domestic helper must allow the employee to visit his or her church or temple to worship at least once a week. But no one is allowed to practice their particular beliefs in open places. However, all are allowed to celebrate their religious festival in public. Re: [Goanet] Indians do it differently
Rajan lets his 'patriotism' (chauvinism?) get the better of him and ducks the point: How is it that Indians are so fastidiously clean, but India is so incredibly dirty? That others bathe less frequently than us is irrelevant... as offtopic as this post :-) --FN Valmiki-bab, Very quickly - I skimmed through the TOI article. As soon as I saw the author was from JNU and a sociologist to boot, I knew we would be wading in hooey. The Western standards of personal hygiene and civic cleanliness are relatively recent. Up until the mid-nineteenth century, Europe was a filthy sty. Personal habits were abysmal - the number of times King Louis XIV bathed in his entire life is said to be less than 10. Ladies thought nothing of relieving themselves publicly at his social functions (if I correctly recall, he once slipped on urine and broke a bone or two). Garbage would be tossed out of windows onto the streets and so on. There are books written on the evolution of Western hygiene and standards of cleanliness. And oh - at the beginning of the 20th C there was a public call to people in England to bathe at least once a week, in which it was pointed out that even the benighted Indians take bath once a day. To which an Englishman responded: Since the Indians are unclean to begin with they need to take frequent baths whereas we don't. Quotes above paraphrased from memory.
Re: [Goanet] Goa for sale... (Herald Mirror)
From Neil Rangel That article is another reminder of the sorry state of Goa and the bleak future of Goans in their own land. Anyone will have had a bad experience of tring to find reasonably priced land in Goa and the search very disheartening. One Goan landlady wrote back to me suggesting that I had rather not buy. The problem is with the landowning class in Goa: greed has overtaken them.As has been said, money makes the world go round..it certainly makes the Goan landowners go round and round. They prefer to sell land to outsiders at large sums but will never sell it to a fellow Goan for a reasonable amount. The only way out of this mess is for our politicians to legislate that land be sold only to those of Goan origin. Thats unimaginable considering that the vast majority are in the real estate business and have made unimaginable sums of money selling land. Land has become unaffordable to the average Goan.Same with good quality food..the very curse brought on by tourism. The real estate business in Goa is an easy way for people to convert black money to white.Goa may perhaps be the most corrupt state in the country. The agitation against foreign nationals buying land has more to do with the local corruption at every level that loses out..a foreigner usually does not develop the land..so every corrupt official loses out on whatever money they can make. Off course in principle no foreigner should be allowed to purchase land. The situation will only get worse as time goes by and land becomes more scarce. Then they'll convert agricultural lands...Goa has been changed for the worse with unplanned unaesthetic constructions and garbage strewn all over the place..loads and loads of waste and plastic bags next to buildings and complexes. This is not Goa but Goabagge... --- Read all Goanet messages at: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/ ---

[Goanet] Goa vis-a-vis Maharashtra
Dear All Goans, I am receiving emails and calls about migration and some said to me whether i am trying to be like Raj Thakre and his MNS. let me give u all my view points on that Mumbai is just a tip on Maharashtra map,Mumbai is not equall to Maharashtra, inspite of that see what happened to native and Maharashtrian from Girgaon and other natives of 7 island that formed Mumbai.People from these areas have vanished or migrated up to dahisar, nalasopara they can come upto Banda nearSawanwadi which is the border of Goa and Maharashtra but we Goans will have only ione choice to jump in Arabian sea. In Mumbai Maharashtrians are 30 lakhs and UP bhais are 50 lakhs, this is apart from other state people. think what will happened to Goans in next 10 years?i know the trend is exactly like Mumbai and i am sure the Government of today in is not interested in welfare of Goans and Goa but are there to destroy Goa and Goans. regards Amol Navelkar UTT Goenkara --- Read all Goanet messages at: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/ ---

Now that's better and vindicates my earlier postures. I don't think anybody should have problems with this as you have clearly stated now that this is your own project! Re: [Goanet] PARRIKAR v/s PARRIKAR
I second Vidyadhar's suggestion. The print media still rules the local roost. This is a good idea, even if the story is being shown on local cable TV and might be telecast, as one hears, by national news channels. Despite a so-called 100 MBPS broadband connection (BSNL's), I could not view the interview online. I am immensely grateful to Dr. Anand Virgincar who, sitting in the UK, had the interviews dumped on a DVD and sent over, per kind courtesy of Julio da Silva ... in a matter of hours. Only if our government was a fraction as efficient! -v On Sat, 05 Apr 2008 Vidyadhar Gadgil wrote : Amidst some other rather pressing preoccupations, finally managed to find the time to see the interview. Much food for thought here (127 minutes of it!), and a few more viewings will be needed to process and analyse it. But that's another story for another day. Meanwhile, it is clear that the initiators of this idea, the producers and crew -- as well as, of course, both the Parrikars in the title -- have obviously invested a lot of time, thought and effort in this venture. Others have also chipped in, by suggesting questions. I would have a suggestion for the producers, so that all this hard work gets the widest possible audience. Could they prepare transcripts of this interview and supply them to all the local newspapers published in the three languages widely spoken in Goa? While I have often heard the internet being hyped as the media frontier of the future, the reality as of today is that the digital divide in India is very marked. This is very much true of Goa too, which has one of the most literate, prosperous and technologically savvy populations of any part of India. If one is to reach a larger audience, the print media is vital. The newspapers would be able to scrutinise and use the transcripts to reach a much wider audience. Else, this may end up being just one more storm in a cyber-teacup of which we have at least three a day on Goanet, not to speak of other internet forums. :-)

[Goanet] Migrant Policy - Goa.
*Subject: Migrant Policy - Goa.* * * Migrant Labourers/Vendors in Goa are seen as (A) Necessity for development (B) Demographic Threat, (C) Political Vote Bank etc. *Firstly I will state that Migrants have to be respected **treated well with basic human dignity.* But let's debate/address this sensitive issue fairly in a civilized manner; which in my view is a major factor diluting our Identity, besides other issues. Like other places, we need migrants to develop/sustain Goa, but also as other places we need a strong migrant control policy e.g. The UAE with a minority local population has controls to ensure that the UAE remains with its people. All developed nations have/are pushing for tighter immigration controls. A humane policy is needed to protect both, Goan Migrant interests which can include: Controlled migrant intake SUBJECT TO REQUIREMENT, Welfare e.g. Medical/Lodging, Human rights AND MOST IMPORTANTLY Getting them to return when jobs are over etc. Critics say migrants can live anywhere in India there should be no controls; OK so what do we do? Do we accept/allow this to erode our Identity; if the latter is what the critics/majority wants then, *let's boldly declare Goa the 1st Cosmopolitan Indian State with no specific Local Identity/Language term Goan no longer relevant?* If there are ways we can preserve our Identity without such controls; then let's hear it accept it if feasible. Yes, some will quote the Constitution; Surely the threat to any identity was not foreseen, whilst framing the constitution else India's founding fathers would have made provisions; then again there was no Goan input to framing of the constitution, as Goa was not part of India at that time!! Politicians are mainly responsible for the migrants issue; way beyond our needs and give false reasons to us Gullible Goans E.g. Margao migrants are major vote bank of Goa's Chief Minister; a clear manipulation of Democracy!! Can he work for Goan Interests when he does not need our Votes? How much Goan Taxpayers money/land is given to maintaining/growing the vote bank? Demographics are rapidly changing in Margao. Politicians use Migrants for Power; then what? Goans will pick up the pieces in the future. Margao had disturbances recently; this is simply because different communities will have different views; sometimes radically different. *No community can accept a major demographic change!! * *Arwin Mesquita, UAE. *

But, sometimes – for a wider reach, as he would say – also in English. This was so particularly on the life of saints and village feasts. Not without surprise: Zito hailed from a deeply religious family, as he himself also was. His elder brother, late Fr. Lactancio Almeida, of the Society of Pilar, was a long-time Editor of the 'Vauraddeancho Ixtt. 'Zito was born March 2, 1938 at Banda, Assolna. So entwined was his life with his faiththat when he decided to start a business for a living, he set it up at Margao's HolyFamily House dealing mainly with, what else, all forms of religious items – from Biblesand scapulars to rosaries, from Holy pictures and statues to ciboria. Side-by-side on the shelves of his showroom lay, of course, his second love: books in Konknni. After completing primary studies in Portuguese and further studies in English, Zito began writing at a young age. He initially contributed to 'Aitarachem Vachop,' a weekly published by the Salesian Society from Panjim. He continued his Konknni writing in 'Vauraddeancho Ixtt,' Pilar Society's popular weekly. Among the daily newspapers he wrote for were 'Sot', 'Novem-Goem', 'Divtti', 'GoenchoAvaz', and 'A Vida.' So also for weeklies like 'Udentichem Nokhetr', 'The Goa Times','The Goa Mail', 'Avé Maria', 'Cine-Times', 'Loksad', 'Konkan Mail', and monthlies like'Dor Mhoineachi Roti', 'Gulab', 'The Goan Review' (a bi-monthly), and 'Renovação,'the fortnightly of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman. Most in today's younger generations would have only heard of these publications: almost all now extinct. In addition to that voluminous work, Zito authored some books. Among them:'Bhurgeank Kannio-I', 'Bhurgeank Kannio-II', 'Vaitt Ieta Boreak' (1967), 'Fatima' (on theapparitions, 1973), 'Goy, Mhojea Sopnantlem Painnem' (on Goa and Goans, 2006), all in Romi Konknni. As General Secretary of the Konkani Bhasha Mandal, he edited 'Konknni, Romi LipintKhas Natalam Ank-1979.' He also edited Special Issues of 'Natalanchim Nokhetram' (in Konknni, English and Portuguese, at Christmas-1968) and 'Goychi Ranni,' (Carnival-1980.) For a lifetime of work in Konknni, Zito was a much-decorated man. Among the many honours, awards and 'puroskars' he received: In 'Konknni Pustokancho Spordho'organised by the then 'Konknni Katolk Boroinnarancho Ekvott,' he was awarded thefirst prize for his book 'Bhurgeank Kannio-I' (1970). He bagged the Fr. LactancioAlmeida Iadostik Puroskar as the best writer of 'Vavraddeancho Ixtt' (1986.) The'Gulab Award' came his way for being a Boro Borovpi (1988.) He was feted by 'Vavraddeancho Ixtt' (2003.) The Dalgado Konknni Academi awarded him their Fr.Freddy J. Da Costa Potrokar Puroskar-2006 for his writings in the past 52 years.Among the many public felicitations was one in 2007, for his writings on Gulab fromthe monthly's inception in 1983. Of course, he was honoured by both the State-levelinstitutions of the language, the Konkani Bhasha Mandal and the Goa KonkaniAcademy for his lifelong contribution to the language. Besides his articles in Konknni, Zito also wrote rather profusely in the Englishlanguage. This work was published in Goa's 'Herald', 'The Navhind Times', 'Gomantak Times' and 'Fr. Agnel's Call.'The great thud that shocked the Konknni world ironically came from a small fall athome. Zito was bleeding a bit from the head. When brought to a Margao hospital, hisvital parameters necessitated admission to the ICU. Suddenly, several unrelated problems surfaced and, in less than a week and before anyone could realise it, thenotable son of Konknni had passed into the pages of history. Zito-bab breathed his last on April 4, 2008, at age 70. He leaves behind his wife, MariaEmy Menezes of Cuncolim and children Rubina/Russel, Darlene Orfelinda, Savio and Maria Lourdes (Lulush) and two grandchildren, Rusener and Rubayne. All the saint she worshipped and propagated during his journey here must have surely been there at the pearly gates, to welcome him to eternal home. = The above article appeared in the March 2, 2008 edition of the Herald, Goa = Goa-World.Com Team expresses sincere condolences to the family of Zito Almeida May God grant eternal rest.

[Goanet] Goa: Paradise Lost
Goa: Paradise Lost By Rahul Singh Think of a place with beautiful pristine beaches, clear blue waters, swaying coconut palm trees and the friendliest, easiest-going people on earth - and you think of Goa. Think again of a place full of corrupt cops and politicians, a land full of crime, drugs and alcohol - and you also think of Goa. Paradoxical, yet true. These two contrasting images of Goa have come to the fore with the recent rape and murder of a 15-year-old English girl, Scarlett. Her bruised body was found at Anjuna, one of Goa's most popular and scenic beaches, where foreigners like to hang out. It was later found that she had been high on a lethal cocktail of cocaine and booze. Whether she was deliberately murdered after being raped, or drowned while in a stupour, is still a matter of police investigation. Scarlett's mother, 44-year-old Fiona MacKowan, a mother, believe it or not, of nine children through four men, none of whom she married, landed in India immediately after she learnt of her daughter's death and went on the offensive against the Goa administration. She accused the state's Home Minister (law and order comes under him), no less, and the police chief of being in cahoots with the drug trade, leaving the administration red-faced and spluttering. The trouble is that a lot of people believe her. Both men of course hotly denied the charge and, instead, pointed an accusing finger at Fiona. How could she be so callous as to leave a 15-year-old girl alone without protection? they asked. Their question, however, skirted the main issue: how has Goa, a much sought-after destination for tourists, both Indian and foreign, bringing in valuable foreign exchange, turned into something of a nightmare? I first came to Goa in the early 1964, on my first major assignment as a reporter for the Times of India. Three years earlier, over three centuries of Portuguese rule over the territory had come to an end, with the Indian army marching into Goa. India's then Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, his popularity waning, needed something to boost his party's electoral prospects. A forced takeover of Goa was his answer. There was little resistance from the few Portuguese troops based there and the Indian army had a cakewalk. But India's show of military might saddened many who were proud of the country's tradition of non-violence and peaceful coexistence. After Goa's liberation, an Opinion Poll took place, with Goans being asked whether they wanted to merge into the adjoining Maharashtra state, with whom they had strong cultural links, or be on their own. To the surprise of most Indians, they preferred being separate. I went to Goa several times after that, enchanted by the beauty of the place and the friendly, liberal nature of its people, forty percent of whom were Roman Catholic and the rest Hindu and Muslim. This combination of natural splendour and cultural mix is what attracted hordes of tourists - close to 400,000 foreigners a year - but it was also the undoing of Goa. Alcohol was always easily and cheaply available in the countless Goan bars and taverns that dot the state and are part of its charm and ethos. Feni is the local brew, made either from the cashew fruit or the sap of the coconut palm. A thriving cottage industry revolves around feni. But with alcohol came drugs - hashish, marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy and, most lethal of all, pure heroin. The drugs were openly sold and it is no secret that politicians and officials were deeply involved in the trade, as were some foreign tourists, particularly from Israel and Russia. Indeed, the Russians now monopolise Morjim, one of the beaches in north Goa and there is considerable talk of the clout of the Russian mafia in the state. With a population of only a little more than one million over a large stretch of territory, land was relatively cheap in Goa. I bought a small one-bedroom, 600 sq.ft. studio apartment, near Colva beach in southern Goa for the equivalent of $10,000 a decade ago. It was a steal and has appreciated several times since then. Many other non-Goans did the same, as did quite a few foreigners. The result? Real estate prices in Goa have gone through the ceiling. Worse, developers, in league with corrupt local politicians, have grabbed land illegally, flouting environmental and local regulations, levelling coconut and cashew plantations and constructing ugly apartments and townships, totally out of character with Goan architecture, a charming and unique blend of Latin and Indian styles. Little wonder that Goans are outraged, as they see their state pillaged and vulgarized and their way of life threatened as never before. Remo Fernandes, acclaimed singer and composer who has adapted traditional Goan music to modern influences, creating a style entirely his own, is a thoroughly disillusioned man. Asked who was responsible for the mess that Goa now founds

Re: [Goanet] LIMERICK FOR THE DAY 58 - CASTE AND THE CHURCH
Hi Anand Virgincar and Gilbert Lawrence among others. Further to Anand's statement below, I am rather intrigued that among my respondents, several 'Catholic' Goans have expressed firmer adherence to caste, and as apologists, than our Hindu Goanetters who have contacted me on this issue. Of course, with a non representative and small sample, one cannot draw conclusions but I am nevertheless most perplexed by what on earth sustains many Catholics to the evil of caste, some 500 years after conversion to Catholicism--to the extent of even celebrating their membership and adherence to caste! Is it possible that although one does not inherit caste biologically, the reality of socialisation and indoctrination into caste by 'Catholic' parents into their offspring has been incredibly sustained and intense? Or is it possible that 'Catholic' caste adherents feel more vulnerable without the crutch of caste, especially among those less endowed in the cranial department? Or even perhaps, by drawing on Anand's point about knowing right from wrong on caste, has this key characteristic among most humans, been blunted by the very Catholicism in Goa that, has never indicated that caste practise is wrong and unacceptable within the Catholic faith and has consequently, effectively 'nurtured' and accommodated it through the historical hegemony provided to caste adherents by the Bishopric itself, and the senior Catholic clergy who wield symbolic and real network power in Goa? The more I look into this utter nonsense of caste among the so called Catholics in Goa, the more I discover about this distinct form of brown on brown racism ever so embedded where it should definitely not be for the simple reason that Roman Catholicism has no caste in terms of belief, ideology and theology. Consequently, it is my considered view that, any contamination of Catholicism in this respect, should be expunged as a matter of some urgency through the leadership of the Church itself in Goa. Cornel DaCosta, London, UK PS If the Church acts as suggestted by me above, I have ascertained from significant numbers of Catholic priests as well as the laity, that there is no fear that any such necessary Church action repudiating caste will lead to an exodus from the Church---just in case this is a niggling fear for the Archbishop. --- anand virgincar [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I can confidently say that I speak for tens of thousands of educated ( and by educated I do not refer to college degrees only but to awareness of what is right and what is wrong ) Hindu's in Goa THE CASTE SYSTEM IN THE HINDU FAITH IS ONE OF THE GREATEST EVILS EVER DESIGNED BY HUMANKIND. Re: [Goanet] The Suraj and the Lotus Merge
your last post clearly shows the depths of Goasuraj.. ((:- No Cedrico, not in the least bit will you be able to gauge the depth of goasuraj... and BTW , you must be quite somebody with predictions, uh ?-:)) In fact goasuraj is deep like a tunnel or a rather bore-well, straight and down, down, down. And there is a pin prick of a light coming up which is hardly visible if looked down. But that light is growing in intensity every minute as it is approaching upwards. A day will come, like a lazer beam it will pierce the eyes and render the careless looker blind if care is not taken whilst looking down into the deep. Here I must alert you Cedrico that even I have had a brush with predictions with mostly positive results. UGDP way. eh? Sure. The present VP (North) of goasuraj is Mathias Vaz of Divar now a Santacruz'kar. He was the guy behind the formation of UGDP along with Tamba. And he repeated this story to us goasuraj guys even yesterday at Kesarval Gardens, Verna, at his son's wedding reception. And he has always taken pride to inform us that he had personally designed the Two Leaves symbol for UGDP. If you are right with your predictions then I must immediately have him sacked for trying to steer goasuraj the UGDP way. Cannot trust these old guys with bygone sentiments , you know!!! [Goanet] The Mechanics of Feni Pricing
Frederick has written the following article in the Herald: http://oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=2153cid=2 Now what I can't understand is this: Why is the producer complaining that he has to sell his cashew feni kolso (is that 6, 12 or 18 bottles?) at Rs 550 and at that price it is not remunerative for him? Why can't he sell it at say Rs 2000 and thus make it worthwhile? Feni used to be my favorite drink whenever I regularly went to Goa on RR when I worked in the Gulf - until I saw a Carmona doctor, old and experienced (I forget his name) who told me in no uncertain terms to stop drinking feni. His exact words were there is no such thing as pure feni in Goa today, no matter who tells you how he personally knows the distiller and where he got it from. Words of wisdom which I took seriously enough to follow. Now my question is: Personally, I would be willing to pay as much for a bottle of 100% pure feni as I would for a bottle of scotch, say Canadian Dollars 40 or its rupee equivalent 1600. Undoubtedly there are several overseas Goans, feni lovers like me who would be willing to pay a like amount. Now tell me at that price would a Goa distiller find it worthwhile to make his liquor? So could FN or anyone else explain what this brouhaha is all about? (Rajan Parrikar's fave word brouhaha - ha ha.) Roland. -- Roland Francis 416-453-3371
[Goanet] Light at end of tunnel?
Light at end of tunnel? As predicted, the Indian government made a last minute U-turn on plans to recommend a minimum wage of BD100 for unskilled Indian labourers working in Bahrain. The latest excuse the government has invented is that the new minimum wage was an official Indian policy decided months ago and that it would affect only labourers recruited after March 1. And, ultimately, the file was closed. But the initiative taken by the Bahrain government to send a delegation to India during the fourth week of this month under the leadership of Labour Minister Dr Majeed Al Alawi is a timely one and looks like light at the end of the tunnel for struggling labourers. Dr Al Alawi will be accompanied by three ministry officials, one from the Labour Market Regulatory Authority and five businessmen: Farooq Almoayyed, Jameel Mayrooq, Sameer Nass, Adel Al Ali and Yousif Saher. There is going to be a shortage of five million workers and it will surely hit major development projects in GCC countries, especially in Bahrain, in the next five years. Also, as the Asian economy is booming, especially in India, and the workers there are paid heavily, there can be a mass exodus of expatriate labourers from Bahrain if their rightful demands are not met by their bosses. The white collar Indian expatriate workers too find it very difficult to make a decent living in Bahrain with the soaring house rents, inflation and the separation from their families. There should be some control over the rents and landlords should not be allowed a freehand to continue increasing the rents. I hope that the Bahraini delegation explores ways and means to co-operate with the Indian government to end the plight of 270,000 unskilled labourers and housemaids living in Bahrain. [Goanet] Indians do it differently
Rajan Parrikar wrote: The Western standards of personal hygiene and civic cleanliness are relatively recent. Date: Sun, 6 Apr 2008 01:38:43 +0530 From: Frederick [FN] Noronha * Rajan lets his 'patriotism' (chauvinism?) get the better of him and ducks the point: How is it that Indians are so fastidiously clean, but India is so incredibly dirty? That others bathe less frequently than us is irrelevant... as offtopic as this post :-) --FN Mario adds: Wasn't it this same Rajan who has taken legal action to enforce civic cleanliness in Panjim? Isn't it this same Rajan who with dramatic pictorial evidence is exposing the lack of urban planning in Goa which is destroying what used to be the picturesque Goan landscape? Isnt't it this same Rajan who asked what the @#$% is wrong with us for allowing such things to happen? So, then, what are we to make of Rajan's lesson in Trivial Pursuit about the lack of European cleanliness hundreds of years ago. Does this have any relevence to either Europe or India in 2008? I, too, was bemused and puzzled at Rajan's attempt at diverting attention from India and regaling us with questionable anecdotes about public urinating by the ladies in Louis XIV's court. In India there is a pattern of civic carelessness which does not stop at the obvious lack of respect for public spaces while maintaining a high level of private cleanliness. Sixty years after independance it continues to extend to the callous, often corrupt behavior of so-called public servants including bureaucrats and politicians, it extends to the opportunistic attacks on female foreign tourists across India while pretending to hold women in high esteem, and it even extends to the lack of etiquette across India while driving a vehicle on a public thoroughfare.
[Goanet] PARRIKAR v/s PARRIKAR
Hi All, If one has seen the interview (kindly posted by Joegoa) Manohar clearly says; - what I have been saying all along. Manohar says he did not write the script, who did? Manohar said as soon as he saw that the Catholics were offended he withdrew the CD. Manohar also said that it was a mistake. Manohar also said the CD was about the freedom struggle - Is that CD in English suppose to educate the Catholics? All the above answers can be summed up in one sentence: Manohars 'Goebbels' (Hitlers propaganda machine) made the CD. When it back fired he regretted it. What does that say? Manohars Goebbels are communal, including himself. Reason: He trusted them to the job properly therefore he did not check their work and released the CD, taking for granted all is well according to 'his RSS church' thinking and its men. He and his men do nasty things and Manohar than comes forward and says, I made a mistake. Well!! he did not make a mistake, His RSS teachings are wrong - that's what it boils down to. His Goebbels are right, him trying to be SECULAR does not correspond to 'his RSS church' teachings. ED. - Yahoo! for Good helps you make a difference

[Goanet] New technology could rid Dubai of wast, including plastic bags, forever.
New German technology could rid Dubai of waste By Kevin Scott, Gulf News Reporter Dubai: A team of German scientists say they have developed the technology to rid Dubai of waste, including plastic bags, forever. The city has been targeted as an ideal strategic location for Ecocycling, a revolutionary new concept developed by scientist Franz Philip. The process involves turning waste, both household and toxic, into a raw material that forms the basis of a new product that can be used in the construction or oil industry. The new technology could transform plastic bags from being an environmental menace into a substance with many benefits. Gulf News has been campaigning against the use of plastic carriers and is urging people to say No to Plastic Bags. Waste-free Michael Engelhardt, Managing Director of Clean Planet Limited, the company with exclusive distribution rights to the pioneering technology, said the UAE had the opportunity to become the first waste-free country in the world. We have invited Techno Park, a subsidiary of Dubai World, to come and view this absolute zero-waste technology. It would have tremendous benefits for everyone living here and the impact of future developments on the tourism industry would be fabulous. It would dramatically change the city's environmental situation. Ecocycling is a cold mineralisation process where waste is torn apart and molecules are encapsulated in the resultant silicate structure. Numerous materials can be developed from C.M500. It can be used as a basis for road construction, desert greenery or to produce Xment, a product much harder than standard cement that can be shaped, like plastic, if Xfibre is added. C.M500 can also be used as a revolutionary new oil binder because the mineral sucks up sludge when poured on to an oil spill. Data from the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) shows the UAE has between 30 and 40 million tonnes of highly toxic and dangerous oil sludge. Engelhardt said Ecocycling was a much better alternative to dumping, incineration and normal recycling. He said: Waste in Dubai is being dumped in landfills in the desert. It has become a huge problem because the landfills are located in important development and residential areas. This technology would particularly benefit Dubai as it already has a very severe waste problem that will only get worse as the population continues to grow. A test plant is currently in operation in Wurzburg, near Frankfurt, and they are awaiting final approval from the German government. ECOCYCLING this is how it works Ecocycling is a cold mineralisation process where waste is torn apart and molecules are encapsulated in the resultant silicate structure. The waste is transformed into a mineral called C.M500, a non-toxic product suitable for applications in the construction or oil industry. Household waste, including plastic, is put through a huge shredder and reduced to small pieces about 10 centimetres in size. Ferrous and non-ferrous metals are separated before the waste goes through a grinder to reduce it even further. Toxic waste is then added to the household rubbish, which produces a chemical reaction. Magic powder containing nine basic additives is the final ingredient added to the mix. The process, which has no effect on the environment, creates the mineral C.M500. You rock. [Goanet] Goan Tolerance
There is currently a lot of talk about the tolerance of Goans, particularly because Goans are in increasing numbers, starting to speak out against the fast deterioration of Goan Culture Identity; mainly with the rapid influx of Non-Goans/Migrants and hence the fast changing demographics. While I full appreciate that Tolerance is the need of the hour to make the world a better place, I want to put tolerance into a correct perspective for Goa. Nobody today can dispute the enormous tolerance hospitality exhibited by Goans in Goa, simply with the fact that 40% of Goa's population is Non-Goans; I would like for the critics to compare this, with the demographics of other Indian states. We, Goans should continue to be Tolerant Hospitable to all other people, but this does not mean it is wrong for us to put in safeguards now, to reverse the erosion of Goan Identity protect Goan interests. In the UAE, where I temporarily reside for example, the vast majority is non-nationals and many are allowed to even buy land restrictively, but this country in its wisdom has put in fair safeguards to ensure that the UAE will always remain with its own people. Yes we are Indians, but India is made up of some many cultures identities; each of which has a RIGHT to be preserved/protected. To drive home my point, say for instance in the homes that we live in, we can be very tolerant hospitable to our guests or any person for that matter, but does this mean that we should give away our homes to the said people? Surely nobody will agree to this, not even the critics. * * *Arwin Mesquita, Abu Dhabi *
[Goanet] Konkan Curry: Unity in Adversity
Unity in Adversity KAMKAZ, Kolomb, dope and hope in Goa! By Miguel Braganza On Republic Day earlier this year, 43 groups of 30-plus members each sang non-stop for 40 hours to enter the Guinness Book of World Records. The lilting lyrics of one of the songs said it all, Konkani Amchi Mai, Konkani Amkam Zai. or KAMKAZ. That is history. On 26 March, 2008, I was a part of the GBA delegation that was taught a little bit of Geography and Political Science by the hardly literate villagers of Kolomb, near Fatorpa. There are reports that Remo Fernandes is going to have a crash course in Social Studies and Martial Music that will send the dope to the packers and will help give new hope to our youth. Everyone is invited to join in all the above three efforts. Archbishop of Goa Felipe Neri Ferrao will be the Chief Guest of the Closing Ceremony of Silver Jubilee Year of Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr at TSKK premises in Porvorim on Friday, 28 March 2008. Mr. Premanand Lotlikar, President of Dalgado Konknni Akademi, Mr. Eric Ozario the President of Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy, Mr. Wilson Mazarello Convenor of RLAF and Mr. Purnanand Chari, President of Konknni Bhasha Mandal, Margao will be other guests of honour. This is a rare occasion when protagonists of all the major scripts of Konkani will be on one platform to say KAMKAZ. Interestingly, Dr. [Fr] Anthony da Silva, S.J., the Jesuit Provincial of Goa Province with a doctorate in reconciliation of societal conflict from the University of Michigan-USA, will share the dais with them. The Botanical Society of Goa [BSG] collaborated with the TSKK in its effort to promote environmental consciousness. The trees and plants on the TSKK campus are neatly labeled, as done at the St.Xavier's College campus, Mapusa. The BSG is proud to be associated with institutions like these, as it is proud to be associated with the GBA. Its members, both individuals and institutions, have contributed to the better understanding of environmental issues from forests and mangroves to coastal sand dunes. The Regional Plan 2021 is under process with the Task Force while an amendment to the Town Country Planning Act, 1974, moved in the Goa Assembly seeks to make a provision for Central and State government projects [like IT Parks and SEZ] to be placed beyond the currently leaky compartments of TCP 'zones'. It may not face much opposition in a house, where the two sides seem to be coming together after the Scarlett 'Killing' case exposed the dark underbelly of Goa. Who spoke of the yellow bellies after Valentine's Day this year? Now the TV news channels are calling the pot-bellies black! The Regional Plan may also need a second autopsy after the revised report of the first autopsy. In the meanwhile, the viscera of Goa, preserved for centuries, are now being sent to Japan and China for chemical analysis and processing. The open-cast iron ore and bauxite mines are now the Last Frontier of Goa. With a 100 operating mines it is bad enough. There are about 700 other leases and 480 new prospecting licences that have been reportedly issued in this tiny state of Goa. Some of these applications, as in the case of SEZ, seem to have been accepted on plain paper. One was shocked to see a Police complaint by someone claiming to be a mines manager on a similar plain paper, without so much as the identity of the signatory. The police acted on this complaint within minutes of its receipt. The members of the Goa Bachao Abhiyan were getting familiarized with the mining scenario in Goa earlier this week. The members were shocked to hear 13 persons from Kolomb were arrested under Section 151 Cr.P.C. and later released, but not before booking a chapter case under Section 107 of the Criminal Procedure Code against them. The villagers cultivate two crops of rice paddy each year in the land now likely to be destroyed. Now some of them have added a new chapter to their lives Whereas the 73rd and 74th Amendments to the Constitution of India seek to empower the Villages to decide for themselves through the Gram Sabha, the Goa Forest Department seems to have gone ahead and thumbed the Gram Sabha in its nose by overturning the 'Resolution' passed opposing the mine in the village. The members of the GBA have expressed their solidarity with the people of all affected villages that have resolved to live peacefully without this kind of anti-people development Goa's bright and sunny image as a tourist destination of Sun, sand and xacuti has been darkened by a media blitz on the Scarlette Keeling murder that has focused on all issues except the dignity of the dead, the sanctity of the living and gender consciousness. It did show up the underbelly of drugs on the coastal belt and rave parties. Now each Goan is doing what he can to sensitise people to the harmful effects of drugs. One of them is Remo Fernandes from Siolim. Remo wrote a song more than

Re: [Goanet] The Saffron beast
Cedrico, you have said it right. And I have been saying this all along. We are Goans, Manohar Parrikar is a Goan. That is fine. But the national parties are run not by Goans. There is something called the HIGH COMMANDS: For the Congress it is Sonia and Ahmed Patel and Goa Desc in charge. Nothing moves past them if they do not sanction something. Our guys shuffle to and from Delhi and Goa like errand boys. For NCP it is PAWAR and Praful Patel. They say YES, it is done. They say NO, you don't argue but just sit tight with a long face. And there is the BJP. There are too many masters, of them the RSS is the worst. Besides Manohar says RSS is his religion. That makes it all the more difficult. He cannot decide for himself. He has to go with the flowing safron tide. Giving Goa the good governance is not difficult at all. Infact, under the BJP Goa can have the best ever governance. BUT. They say Rath Yatra starts from Goa, it will start from Goa. I don't see how Manohar Parrikar can say No. Therefore, there is nothing like having Goa's writ run by Goa's High Command right here in Goa. No Delhi - Billy. If Goans cannot muster the necessary clout to tell the National parties to get lost from the face of Goa, they should atleast have enough sense to dilute them sufficiently not to give them the handle to turn the masala by themselves. However, Goa has failed in this dilution already. Thanks to Felipe Neri Rodrigues and MATANHY SALDANHA. It is said Once bitten twice shy. We require dilutants not to loose their diluting properties once released into the mainstream. As I have already said, it takes a powerful laser type of strength to cut thro' thick and thin to show its head at the other end, come what may. Anyone wants to SAVE GOA that bad??? How about letting me on the secret?? floriano goasuraj PS 1:. My take why national parties are interested in Goa is that they want to use Goa as their watering hole for their tired Delhi and other leaders and the many chamchas of these leaders. And they make sure that we gullible Goans do not protest or feel the pinch. Because they have their super Goan chamchas running their writ here on Goans through the Delhi given whip. PS2: Cedrico, do me a favour and tell me what colour you see now in this post. I do hope it has a good, identifiable tinge. - Original Message - From: cedrico dacosta [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: goanet@lists.goanet.org Sent: Sunday, April 06, 2008 5:07 AM Subject: [Goanet] The Saffron beast Dear Porikar Fan Club Members... the individual may be ok but the communial beast he unlishes once in power can be fatal... if Bandodkar tried to merge Goa into MaharashtraPorrikar tried to make a Gujarat out of Goa... the few christao's who are singing hossanas of Porrikar are only used to lend a balance to this out of power ex cm...once the seat is acquiredthe beast of communalism will be let loose and that will be the end of Goa and the minorities... mark my words Cedric da Costa Dubai You rock. [Goanet] DARE TO WALK A DIFFERENT ROAD
Herald, Panjim, 4 April 2008 DARE TO WALK A DIFFERENT ROAD - The Bigger Picture Let us remember that all is not lost. In Goa we are uniquely placed to tread a different path, and give the lead to others. We still have a relatively unspoilt environment and and natural beauty. We have a literate, well-informed, socially engaged population which is deeply attached to its land and culture. By Vidyadhar Gadgil --- There is a sense of desperation creeping into Goan society as the tsunami of irrational development threatens to overwhelm the state. As mega-projects mushroom and ever-growing mass tourism places greater strains upon the social and environmental fabric, the process of hawking Goa to the highest bidder is well under way. Things are at the point where the urban sprawls and rural deserts by now characteristic of much of India are replicated here as well. One of the worrisome aspects of the discourse on these issues in Goa is that most analyses seem to operate on the premise that this is some unique process, or that Goa can be insulated. If anything, Goa is a fortunate latecomer to this process, one that has been steadily gathering pace all over India and the world. It is a process that has reached its fruition in cities like Chennai, Bangalore and Pune. Once among the most charming of Indian cities, they are now nightmarish urban sprawls, with glitzy malls and steel-and-glass office blocks interspersed to make the unpalatable appear desirable. This is not to speak of the rural parts of India that have been blessed by ‘development’ in the form of mining projects, SEZs, and other mega-fantasies of the Indian elites. These devastated landscapes, depopulated of the original inhabitants, no longer have any resemblance to the sylvan and verdant climes they once were. Concurrent with this process is the inevitable social breakdown. There are reams of data about the ever-widening gaps between the rich and the poor. The rich live in glitzy gated communities, while the poor starve and seethe with resentment in squalid, miserable conditions. The cultural homogenisation that takes place under the aegis of globalisation and consumerism creates arid inner lives that become fertile breeding grounds for communalism, xenophobia, and racism. Meanwhile, we crow about high growth rates. All this is an inevitable part of the development model into which we have bought so unthinkingly. The obsession with ‘development’ and growth has prevented us from seeing the fallacies of these dangerous chimeras. We now believe that we can consume more and more, for ever and ever more. We have allowed our communities to break down, with dangerous divisions. A planet strained beyond endurance is now lashing back in no uncertain terms. The deprived and dispossessed watch with increasing anger which cannot be contained much longer. Thoughtful ecologists have pointed out that if the environment does not break down under this attack, the society we are heading towards is one in which the few super-rich elites will live under high security in enclaves, keeping the masses out through use of force. One now sees the start of the same processes in Goa. The environmental devastation is well documented. There are ominous signs of accelerating social chaos, as seen at one level in the rising tide of communalism, and at another in the Scarlett Keeling case. As thoughtful, concerned citizens in Goa look around them and organise to resist the onslaught, there are many lessons to be learnt from the bitter experiences of the rest of the world. Convenient blame games are easy to play -- there are many easy fall-guys, like migrants, outsiders, Goans who want to sell their properties for a fast buck, and rich elites who look for one more playground. But these are not the causes of the problem, they are merely the symptoms of terminal diseases called anti-people development and globalisation. And we need to look inwards as well as outwards if we are to fight these effectively. The village in which I live, Aldona, is in one of the most unspoilt parts of Goa, but it is also succumbing. We have proposals for mega-housing projects where the super-rich will come to get a slice of paradise. Villas, swimming pools, well-watered lawns and all the trappings will place unsustainable strains upon local resources. The projects are being constructed by migrant labour housed in appalling conditions. Many locals, while deploring the situation, are themselves in a rush to sell their properties so that they get the wherewithal to buy into the consumerist fantasy, with a spanking new apartment in Panjim and the latest model of automobile. As the villagers try to organise to resist, they are discovering that we are all responsible -- locals, outsiders, migrants, Goans. And equally, we are none of us responsible, because what each one is doing is
Re: [Goanet] MP Interview
Anesimo Fernandes said: In one of my earlier posts I said that this interview is important for all Goans and specially the Catholics. We have been fed with completely distorted image about Manohar Parrikar. In fact, I have never seen one man being so much viliified. The press which is controlled by the Mining and Building lobby, which inturn controls the Government, has been the main culprit. One should read the pre-election news items on him. He was portrayed as the SATAN who would destroy the very fabric of goan society. RESPONSE: MP's interview taken by Rajanbab with efforts made by Anandbab, Anilbab deserves a big applause. This 54mins + 1hr 13mins video interview covered most of the things related to Goan politics, Goa's future, Goans, and many other things related to Goa during interaction with MP. As Anesimobab said MP has been portrayed as SATAN not only by mining building lobby but by many others. Looking at present scenario present circumstances only MP deserves to be chairing CM's post, which has been presided over by wrong inefficient people in the past 38 months. Result is as expected, inefficient Governance(I doubt if any Govt exists in Goa at present looking at daily headlines), day today items getting sky rocketed, No control over administration, internal conflicts between ruling MLA's, ministers, etc... what not. May be at the time of next assembly elections Goans will realise their big mistake in 2007 assembly poll try to correct it by bringing back MP to power. I hope Goans dont fall prey to drinks, money or any other influence by these corrupt congress co. candidates during that time which I think was the main reason that we got inefficient, corrupt demented Govt at present. Re: [Goanet] Goan Identity or Culture (GIC)
Hi Santosh I too found the definition from Gilbert, attributed to Schein on Identity OR Culture higly questionable. Minimally, the concepts of identity and of culture are not the same by any stretch of the imagination. Further, to lump them together as a collective element is sheer nonsense in my humble estimation. I also have serious reservations about anyone who can say that there is a correct way to perceive, think and feel in relation to problems. The concept and practice of lateral thinking, for instance, is all about people thinking in incredibly varied creative ways to solve problems---and something that is encouraged in all good schools and learning institutions. I think if I were Gilbert, I would endeavour to interpret what I read in a more problematised or questionable way rather than take things as given! Cornel --- Santosh Helekar [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I would like to have the list of books and scholarly articles that Gilbert read as part of his extensive reading on culture. I am particularly interested in knowing the name of Schein's book from which he obtained his definition of culture. I would appreciate it if he could provide me with the exact page number.
[Goanet] Journalism...what journalism ?
Dear Goanetters, I can understand the Goan mainstream media missing the wood for the treesthey are economically controlled by the Goan political and business interests. I can even understand the British press, which is under huge pressure from the intense competetion , particularly by a certain big spender from down under. What I cannot understand , is how a freelancer claiming to be a Niz Goenkar can write the article below without realising the stark raving obvious fact that the reason the poor child's death desreved whatever media attention it got was because there was a blatantly obvious cover up by the current administration in Goa ? Or is it that for some Goan sons of the soil , keeping this unbelievably corrupt , inefficient , irresponsible and idiotic Congress government in power and keeping the clearly better solution out of power more important than the lives of innocent human beings ? JC was on the dot when he said recently that Goan journalists have broken every rule of fair journalism ( I am quoting from memory and am open to correction on that statement ) The sensational article by our fellow Goanetter : http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/uncategorized/sensationalism-media-competition-blew-up-goas-scarlett-murder- case_10034943.html warm and sincere regards, anand _ Win 100’s of Virgin Experience days with BigSnapSearch.com http://www.bigsnapsearch.com
[Goanet] INC Ignores GOA
INC ignores Goa... the slogan once read...if it is a govt in Goa, it has to be the congress or none... tall claims of a foolhardy senior congressman... i feel sorry for Francisco Sardinha who was so sure that Manmohan uncle and Sonia didi would be generous to him and throw some crumbs on him...but alas! there weren't any left... Congress supporters in Goa must realise that the centre doesnt care about the wellbeing of Goa and Goans...and always meted step motherly treatment to Goans and Goa... it speaks very highly of the Congress in Goa and the Cm in managing to bargain a slot in the union cabinet... I am sure...the National Congress leaders, when they visit Goa must be shown the resentment by congress miniters and mla's as a mark of protest against denying a Goan MP a place in the union cabinet.
