[Goanet] Mary our role model for todays' world.
Well said Mr. Albert , Jesus said that even if one has faith as little as a mustard seed he can move a mountain - that is faith and not the way we all are going today - getting upset over each and everything , worrying over nothing , broken homes and families, running to courts and making enemies, suicides and crimes that too now happening slowly from amongst our own community , acquiring wealth for which there is no guarantee we will enjoy, running the rat race and tensions galore and no time for family or friends - if we had faith we would have put our trust in God and seen actual miracles happening in our life . If we need Gods Spirit to work in our lives we have to just do one simple act .. pray to him and allow him to take over our lives . Let Mary be our role model - she led a simple life putting her trust in Gods providence and protection who suffered silently at the foot of the cross watching her sons' execution on the cross and said ' Yes ' once again when Christ at that supreme moment gave her to mankind as our universal role model and mother. When we say the rosary we contemplate not only on her life but on the mysteries of salvation. What we need today is less of TV and more of prayer ( Rosary ) Rosary because the family that prays together stays together.Only if we make a small sacrifice everyday and set aside just 10 minutes for our family rosary you will see the difference slowlyand blessings pouring on us and our children and we can get rid of a lot of ills plaguing our society today . We will be able to set a good example to others too as our lives will automatically change for the better. *Remember you may be the only Bible someone may read in his entire lifetime .* ** *God Bless* ** *Cyril.*
[Goanet] Foreigners should be allowed to buy property in Goa
With clear regulations in place foreigners with the exception of our neighbour hood should be allowed to buy properties in Goa. Even East Africans, Angolans with the exception of Nigerians should also be allowed to invest. But the big problem faced in Goa is the lack of regulations well this has been going on for almost 5 decades. Therefore we see dadagiri type of writings by some whites. In fact these houses should be straightaway bulldozed and white occupants sent home by rowing boats. Goans have been migrating to other places for centuries. But unfortunately the current colonial rule has been brain washing Goans against foreigners with words such as firangi, gori/gora etc. In fact they want Goa for the bharatis. We all know their contribution! BC
Re: [Goanet] Foreigners buying land in Goa
What ignorance ! Within the boundaries of foreigners coming to Goa (the topic is not about India), if there is any bursting of the seams it is from the trash of the rest of India coming to Goa and not from countries overseas. Foreigners come to Goa because living is affordable and cheap? Hey, Indians go to Australia because there are no spots for them in Indian institutions on account of their average marks. Indians go to the Gulf because there are jobs and they pay better. Indians emigrate to western countries for a better quality of life. And who told you the US and most parts of Europe need people? They do, like a hole in the head. Land prices in Goa skyrocket not because of the foreigners alone. There's lots of black money floating in the country. There's lots of corruption in India. Two better companions there cannot be. Soon Mamata Banerjee will have a home in Goa. I'd be surprised if she has not already got one. If you have to rail against foreigners, as Marshall Mendonca said, start with the Russians and the Israelis. They are not stakeholders in Goa like the Brits are. They conspire to distribute drugs and prostitution and restrict the movement of Goans in their own land. Roland. Your interpretation of the above five Kiswahili words becomes even funnier when strung together. Here are the Kiswahili lyrics, with your liberal interpretation besides it. On the other hand, maybe you are on the right track. I have often observed that when a culture does not have enough songs for one hit book, people will include popular songs from another culture and even some songs from Michael Jackson claiming them to be the greatest hits in their language/culture. Re: [Goanet] May be Rest in Darkness_McNamara: From the Tokyo Firestorm to the World Bank
I agree with Mario. I don't consider Cockburn credible. But then, I don't consider Mario very credible either. When McNamara himself states regret for the Vietnam war (in his book "In Retrospect: The Tragedy and Lessons of Vietnam" by McNamara), one has to take his words far more seriously than those of Mario or Cockburn. As far as the Khmer Rouge are concerned, it was Vietnam that ended the holocaust in Cambodia. Vietnam would have been incapable of doing so, were it under US siege. US policy at that time was to ignore the genocide in Cambodia as the Khmer Rouge were mortal enemies of Vietnam. Another example of the laws of unintended consequences - as was the case with the Mujahadeen and the Taliban in Afghanistan, or the 2nd Gulf War that made Iran the power broker in the Middle East today. These various failures show that no single political party in the US has a sole lock on stupid foreign policy. Unfortunately, some narrow minded individuals can't seem to understand this. [Goanet] Evoking Malaika Nostalgia
Hi Francis ! Thanks for revisiting a very popular site which seems to to "dig deeper " everytime we "trip" on some information. Malaika continues to be the most famous Swahili ballad as the other popular ones do not evoke the same passion- let alone the continuous controversy as to who had the first. In addition to the singers you mentioned- the fair skinned Kenyan from Mombasa,Kenya- Mona Miller sings one of the first versions with Fadhili. This verson has four verses - the first two in Swahili and the last two in English- making it the only version with English lyrics. When speaking to Mona in the mid-seventies in Dar es Salaam,Tanzania after she performed at the Simba Grill - the city's only nite spot then with a night club status- she told me that all their other efforts did not come close to the popularity of Malaika. During her performance, Mona got into some Miriam Makeba"bashing" stating that since Makeba did not get copyrights to the song, she decided to sing one of Makeba's popular songs -"Pata Pata" Makeba had two versions of Malaika- one as a solo and the other in a duet with Harry Belafonte. (Makeba is one of very few people whose Tanzanian citizenship was revoked after she took dual citizenship from Algeria and Guinea where she lived with third husband - American Stokely Carmichael). The coyyright issue has been surfaced now and then by Fadhili who stated that he got a "raw deal" from all singers who atempted to popularise the song. Fadhili also sings in a duet with the famous Indian folklore singer- Usha Uthup. I heard her singing at a performance at the Nairobi Institute (formerly the Goan Institute) in the late seventies during their anniversary celebrations. She has a great voice. And then there was Rhodesia's (now Zimbabwe)- Dorothy Masuka who popularised the song in other parts of Africa during her various visits. I had the unique honor of singing Malaika with Masuka at Lusaka's Inter-Continental Hotel in 1976 when I together with a group of Tanzanian journalists were guests of Zambia's first President- Kenneth Kaunda on a ten-day tour of the country. I totally agree with Merwyn Lobo that none of the words in the lyrics come any close to some Konkani words. In this context, I have to congratulate the goans from Kenya who produced the popular "Jambo Goa" CD. It features Konkani songs- some "laced" with Swahili "lingo". I look forward to some similar CDs. Just a clarification on the Tales of the Unexpected, I am assuming that the dowry being counted is bride-wealth. Africans and Muslims have bride-wealth as part of their wedding folklore. It is a gift from the bride-groom to the father of the bride. In a muslim wedding, the Sheikh (priest) acts as a courier; whilst with many tribes, it is measured in the number of cows. So if a Luo from Kenya like Obama's father got married to a Luo girl, he would have to give 36 cows to the father of th bride. That was 30 years ago. As for the Tanzanian lullaby source, I have never heard of it; however, many Tanzanians - including some radio announcers feel that the song has its origins in Tanzania- ostensibly because of the well scripted Swahili lyrics. Swahili was originally properly spoken on the coastal belt- that is Mombasa, and Tanga, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar in Tanzania. Now it is well spoken throughout Tanzania. rgds. Tony Barros. Of the may who came back on this, at least 3 said ‘Chunam’ They are not chunam but ‘Gomi Follam’ (Gum fruits or gum tree) And that’s why I said ‘ Indian Post should plant such trees at their Post Offices all over India.’ When you buy a one rupee stamp or 100 rupees stamp, it does come with sort of self-adhesive gum but never works with tongue nor with water. You need to affix such stamps by applying gum from a gum bottle (if provided). Funny Indian Postal Stamps. When I read Domnic’s answer as ‘Bhembram’ it made me laugh loudly. Yes, they may be called bhembram in the North (as confirm by another). It does look like ‘Bhembar’ Thick sticky crystal (not yellow) running nose Yet, some may call it ‘Xeluttam’ which could also be a right answer as I do remember something called like that. At least 3 of then said it brought back their memory where they used to used the gum fruits to paste labels on text/note books after covering them with brown cover etc Two also said they too ate them when they were kids (I am third one) Gomi follam http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk20/3691688202/ more http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk4/182343026/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk4/182343027/ Thanks you Alfred, Bernice, Domnic, Fausto, Richard, Sebastian, Ereen, Eddie, Joel, Steve etc Chuna/plant looks like this http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk5/2432544120/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk8/472821531/ Thanks again It’s a pleasure doing business with you. [Goanet] Foreigners buying land in Goa
Isn't the sympathy shown by people towards foreigners who have or intending to buy land in Goa a little misplaced?. The laws regarding foreigners buying property in any part of India may be very strict; we ought to understand one cannot equate it with indians settling down or buying property in the US or Canada. We are bursting at the seams; US, or most parts of Europe need people, especially migrants. We are indignant when cheap labour finds its way into India from across the border. Are these foreigners bringing in some special skills that we are short of? Or are we getting cheap labour that we need? They are here as pensioners because life is affordable and cheap; but does that help Goa at all. If anything, it will send land prices skyrocketing! Date: Tue, 7 Jul 2009 19:46:20 -0400 From: Venantius Pinto May be Rest in Darkness McNamara: From the Tokyo Firestorm to the World Bank by Alexander Cockburn http://www.counterpunch.org/ Indeed McNamara's legacy is of the perverse. Mario responds: Readers of Counterpunch and author Alexander Cockburn need to know that this is a far left wing publication and Cockburn is a vicious and mean-spirited Marxist-sympathiser and anti-Semite, as demonstrated by this sentiment at the death of a political opponent "May He Rest in Darkness". Robert McNamara's legacy was marred by the left wing and the Democrat party in America when they cut the military budget on the verge of a VietCong military collapse. This is not my opinion but that of VietCong General Giap, who mentioned in his memoires that he was shocked when the Americans began to pull out because his forces were virtually on their knees after their failed Tet offensive. After the war, the VietCong and Khmer Rouge, whom Cockburn and his Marxist colleagues had described as benign freedom fighters, massacred some 3 million innocent Vietnamese and Cambodians. Real freedom fighters do not massacre their own people.
Re: [Goanet] foreigners buying proerty in Goa
Dear Jane, >Since Gabriel is the ACTIVIST in favour of foreigners buying property in Goa, >should every Goan hold him responsible if some problem does take place, >in Goa, because of them? First of all, allow me to express to sogle Goemkar (not Goankars) on this forum, that an activist, accidental or otherwise, I am not and never will be. I don't know exactly when you, Jane, discovered that there are problems looming, but these have been in existence since a very long time ago. I am not going to elaborate. And please refrain from shouting. I hear you loud and clear. Calm down. >Our Freedom fighters liberated Goa from foreign rule Please stop there. None of your freedom fighters ever "liberated" Goa from foreign rule - Krishna Menon and the Indian armed forces saw to that. And don't bother going into that topic either - its a topic that's been torn to shreds on this and other fora in the past. If you do need more information, please visit http://www.colaco.net/4/GoaLib.htm (BTW, since you dislike the Brits so much, inferred from your constant references to "freedom fighters", now tell me: you enjoy a Westminster-style of Govt in India, speak and write English fairly well, travel on a British idiosynchrasy of a double-decker bus, travel on a British-laid railway system, and probably well-educated in an English-medium school/college; isn't it a bit hypocritical on your part to dislike the very things you were brought up with, and use every day? ) >All Indians who wanted to continue to be ruled by foreigners have >migrated to foreign countries and enjoy being governed by Foreigners. Again, you're rambling. We who have settled in "foreign countries" are no longer foreigners - we're locals where we've settled, and rather enjoy each other's company, food and culture in a multi-cultural environment, and we choose who we want to rule over us just as you do in your own country. >Even the USA has a number of immigrants in top decision-making jobs. So what is the point you're trying to make? >We all know about the thousands of Indians who are welcomed into foreign >countries >to work at menial, low-paid jobs, because the citizens of foreign countries, >do not want to do their own, dirty work. Oh really? So you think all we do is clean toilets? That's a great one :-)) Indians may work menial jobs to get started (which sometimes is a great way to gain work-experience, contrary to India's theoreticians who know everything in theory and nil in practice - see the state of the Goa Medical College Hospital, the public wing), but perhaps you've never heard of Goan judges, administrators, doctors and other leading Goans in the countries they've settled in? High time you took off those blinkers and read something about Goans. >Goa, at the moment does not have the funds/infrastructure necessary to >suypport the influx of foreigners Does it have the funds/infrastructure necessary to support the past, present and future influx of non-Goans, rich or poor, into Goa? FYI, issues being discussed in this thread are issues relating to those who have already purchased property in Goa - not those who are to come. No more from me on this topic. Have a great day. Since Gabriel is the ACTIVIST in favour of foreigners buying property in Goa, should every Goan hold him responsible if some problem does take place,in Goa, because of them? The statement - "Aren't we all human?". Our Freedom fighters liberated Goa from foreign rule, so that we could live like human beings. All Indians who wanted to continue, to be ruled by foreigners have migrated to foreign countries and enjoy being governed by Foreigners. Do you think they are NRI's because their priority is Goa?" We all know about the thousands of Indians who are welcomed into foreign countries to work at menial, low-paid jobs, because the citizens of foreign countries, do not want to do their own, dirty work. [Goanet] Talking Photo/AISI: Michael Jackson – the good, the bad and the ugly
Talking Photo/AISI: Michael Jackson – the good, the bad and the ugly Michael Jackson was a great rock star. I simply loved his dancing/singing- beat it, black or white etc. Like many of you, I too was his great fan. At the time, I often imitate him of his Moon-walking. While in the UK, west London, whenever we go out in the market, we used to see a black guy with walk-man who used to perform like MJ. We always stopped by to join many others. Every time we saw him in the crowed, we shouted- hey Michael Jackson! And he would perform then and there, the moon-walking etc. Few weeks before I left UK, I was surprise to see the same guy working in our local Tesco Stores. Even last night we talked about him and I am told he still work there for Tesco. I am sure, he was in tears when he first heard about MJ. I find Michael Jackson an unique not only in terms of his dancing/singing techniques but in his real life too. It was like he was hiding something. It seems he missed a lot on his growing up. His father wanted him to be the best. What MJ was now (whether good or bad) was a result of his father. It seems MJ was denied of his childhood or the teenage life. This seems affected him psychologically thus resulting in some sort of strange behaviour. As he grew older or into adulthood, I guess his success and the money made him to feel that he is now independent i.e. Not requiring to depend on others to make his own decisions etc. And that’s how, I think he decided to go in for a facial make over i.e. changing from black to white. Perhaps, this was one of his childhood dreams. Few year later, for me MJ was not the same MJ I liked before. I now found him ugly. I find his face scary. I said to myself ‘Not all is well with MJ’. Alleged Molestation case. I was in France at that time (in 1992?) news paper flashed with the news and the pic of the 13 year old Chandler. I think, this incidence/accusation cost MJ half of his life. And I won’t be wrong to say he never came out of this even now. The bad part of MJ, as said, was his strange behaviour. How can I forget the ‘dangling baby’ episode from a 3rd floor window of a city hotel in Paris? What ever it is.. Michael Jackson is the best pop star of our times. Moon walking? [Goanet] Greatest Konkani Song Hits
Mervyn Lobo wrote: Folks, Here are the words to "Malaika." Can anyone recognize a Konkani word? --- Dear Mervyn, Malaika is very much a Konkani song and full of Konkani words. Malaika = creamy (When a tender coconut vendor asks you whethere you want a creamy or a liquidy one if you want one with lots of white stuff you reply Malaika!) Nakupenda = A small weapon made of two connected bamboo sticks and a string. Similar to a Chinese nanchaku. Mali = A male labourer Ningekuoa & Nashindwa = Popular baby names in St. Estevam made up of a combination of grandfather's and grandmother's names from both sides. Sina = A non-Goan IAS officer Pesa = Money from South America Zasumbua = Popular South Goan dance similar to the Samba Yangu = Young in Salcete Kidege = What maan? When used to question a female. [Goanet] INTERVIEW: 'We lacked a civil society movement to halt the hatred in Gujarat'
Alfred Tavares: At the present I am sincerely and deeply moved to nominate Father Cedric Prakash, s.j.for the Rught Livelihood Award. This Jesuit's almost single-handed labours against the entrenched fundamentalist regimein the Indian state of Gujarat, and relentless persecution of the minorities, is truely awesomeand goes a very long way to offer vitally essential measure of comfort, courage and hope tothe hapless downtrodden masses in Gujarat. I take the liberty to point out that every possible international encouragement for Fr Cedric Prakash,is cardinal not only for the success of his endearvours to safeguard civil liberties in the country andthe state but also to keep him safe, as far as possible, from attempts on his life. Please, kindly, advise me and inumerable other well-wishers of Fr Cedric Prakash, on the dueformalities and requisites in formally submiting the nomination papers of Fr. Prakash. In case it is already far delayed for this year's consideration I would respectfully nominate himfor the most distinguished "Alternate Nobel Award" for 2010. Response: Chachha Alfred I fully endorse and second your proposal. Fr Cedric Prakash is doing yeoman service at great risk to his personal safety in an extremely hostile environment. We all need to acknowledge and support such selfless persons. Regards, Marshall
[Goanet] Foreigners buying property in Goa
I have been following the discussion with keen interest. One point which has not come up is the acquistion of land by the Russians and Israelis who have carved out properties and set up boundries where local goans are unwanted and discouraged. I understand that even sign boards in Russian language have been displayed. But no politician or police is willing to touch them. Regards, Marshall

[Goanet] Dy. Collector, Talathi, Head Clerk suspended.
Dy. Collector, Talathi, Head Clerk suspended. The then Dy. Collection of Pernem Mr. Agnelo Fernandes placed under suspension for his alleged involvement in the sale of Govt. land at Ashvem/Mandrem to a Panjim based Party (Anton D’Souza and his 16 successors). Earlier, the Talathi and the Heard Clerk were also suspended in this connection. The suspended officers are Senior Head Clerk Sadashiv Redkar and Talathi Gulshan Harmalkar It was found that that nearly 84,387 sq mtrs of government land along with the land of a private party, both admeasuring about 2.25 lakh sq mtrs, were illegally entered in the name of one Anton D’Souza and his 16 successors. The value of the land is over Rs.5000/sq.mtr On 25th june 2009, Dy. Collector gave his order to include names of all the legal heirs of Mr. Antonio and the whole mutaltion process was completed in less than 15 days by the Talathi and the head clerk Source: Goan Dailies dtd 1st and 8 July 2009 JoeGoaUk says: Mutation entry in less than 15 days? Very interesting!. We have purchased a piece of land (400 sqmtr) from our very own bhatkars. Applied for Mutation last August. Served notices and also gave newspaper publication in Sept/Oct. Made numerous visits to Panjim Office. They said the file is with the CI since October 2008. We been chasing this CI (Sagar) for more then 3 months we never met this guy. Decided to see the Mamlatdar (Mahadev). We asked- Your officer/CI holding our file for then 3 months, is it not too long? He replied ‘ no, it’s not too long’. However, he was kind enough to phone the CI on his mobile saying some guys waiting to see you in your office. We waited more than one hour. We went outside to take a fresh air. In the mean time the CI comes in around 5 and he was already told by his colleagues that some guys went to see Mamladtar.. WE saw/met him for the first time, when asked, why it is taking such a long time? He asked us to give the file No. and soon he said come and see talathi tomorrow. It was so quick that we really felt relieved saying to ourselves ‘Going to Mamlatdar works’ Come next day, upon enquiry at the Talathi, to our surprise they say the CI returned the file with remark ‘Notices not served properly’. We said’ what? If notice were not sent properly, why then we were advised to give newspaper publication? Blaming the officer, they said ‘you better ask this to CI’ Back to CI, he is not there despited visiting him several times. Reluctantly, fresh notices served, two months now and our work still remains undone. If you complain, they can do anything thing. If you don’t pay them (bribe) they can take ages. It seems they all go hand in hand as if they all get percentage of such illgotton money or bribe. Above Ashvem/Mandrem case: Mutation process takes about 45 days (As per Citizen Charter) after the all the formalities up to news paper publication?. It involves file entry, serving Registered AD notices, wait for two weeks and if not all the notices AD come back or one or more come back saying ‘refused’ or ‘addresse not known’ or ‘house closed’ or ‘incomplete address’ etc then the Talati gives a printed notice to be published on local daily. Then wait for another 15 days. The file will now go to CI (Circle Inspector) who is sitting under the same roof as Talathi or the Mamlatdar. After the CI, the file moves to their ‘Sir’ when asked who is the Sir? It’s Mamlatdar. There is not set time as to how long each officer should keep a file with him or her. Mamlatdar can take his own time and there be some elections or by-elections to the panchayat, Zila, Assembly or Parliament then it can take months. (by paying bribe, you could get your work done in less than 15 days as in above Ashvem/Mandrem case) If the Dy. Collector, Talathi and Head Clerk are suspended then what about the Circle Officer? And what about the Mamlatdar? Without whose approval no entries can be made in the mutation Since the land area in Lakhs of sq metrs, the involvement of local MLA or the minister cannot be ruled out. Mr. Digambar, I hate you when you keep saying your Govt if for AAM AADMI Dhek tere aam aadmi ki halat. Nothing works w/o bribe. I am also forwarding this to the New Chief Secretary who upon taking on new charge, has assured bringing in sweeping changes in the administration. Hello Joe, Ref: Mega Project Where is the water supply coming from? Will it be 24hrs x7 or 1/2 hr x7 ? Is the power supply adequate to service this block of apartments & the necessary voltage? Is there a local market around? Where does the drainage passage flow ? Into a bigger organized nallaha or into some paddy fields? Is there a Municipal vehicle service to collect wet & dry garbage? [Goanet] 25th June 1975, Imposition of Emergency - India's Most Infamous Day
Dear Vinay At the outset, I regret the delay in responding to your message as my internet service was not working and it took the MTNL quite a while to set it right. Now to respond to your post- Vinay Natekar: How can people like Marshall Mendonza shamelessly absolve a woman who imposed a draconian Emergency in otherwise peaceful India. Response: Pl read my message to Naguesh very carefully. You will find that nowhere have I absolved her. I have merely stated the fact that the emergency was upheld by the SC and therefore it was legal. The razing of the Babri Masjid, the Gujarat genocide and the Orissa carnage are equal blots and amends have yet to be made for them, let alone apologies from the perpetrators of the crimes. Regards, Marshall
[Goanet] Govt gets High Court dose on health facilities
My son was operated at Goa Medical College to remove steel plate from his leg on Sunday. It was inserted two years back. At the operation theatre around 7.00pm Doctor gave me prescription to bring antibiotics, gloves, needle etc. These were not available at GMC pharmacy. I promptly bought it from private pharmacy and handed over to Doctor. It cost me Rs.880/- . These was also the case of other 5 cases who were waiting outside operation theatre. 3 of them were accident cases that took place on same day. What will be the status of those who could not supply thinks as prescribed by Doctor? What can I do to strengthen the case in High Court filed by senior citizen Sardesai. == “Some months ago the Health Minister Vishwajeet Rane had announced that all patients at GMC, without any hassle, would be given medicines free of cost.” Senior citizen Sardesai, despite his failing health, appeared in person before the High Court to highlight the problem. On Tuesday, he told the Court that pharmacies in government hospitals are not supplying medicines free of cost to patients. Most pharmacies do not keep adequate stock of life saving medicines; hence, poor patients are compelled to buy them from private pharmacies. They also cannot claim any reimbursement for this, he said. http://oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=23889&cid=2 Shrikant Vinayak Barve Convener: We Love Ayurved 9403175973 Love Cricket? [Goanet] 25th June 1975, Imposition of Emergency - India's Most Infamous Day
Dear Naguesh At the outset, I regret the delay in responding to your message as my internet was not working and it took the MTNL quite a while to set it right. Now to your message- Naguesh Bhatcar: Marshall, How can you absolve Indira Gandhi? Whatever your take on this, ultimately it was Indira Gandhi the Prime Minister, who was responsible for whatever that took place during the emergency --sterilisations or whatever else, that were the excesses of the emergency era. If you now want to say that only Sanjay Gandhi was the troublemaker, he was then being hailed as the hero and Indira Gandhi never pulled him up Also, if you remember, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court A.N.Ray, was appointed by Indira Gandhi, bypassing the top 3 - Hegde, Shelat and Grover. Indira Gandhi had tried every which way to bypass the Constitution. Why would she not get favourable ruling? The emergency was not for a month or two, but 21 months of hell Response: Naguesh, please refer my message again which is reproduced verbatim. "It was basically internal compulsions caused by excesses like mass sterialisation, demolition of houses, stifling of dissent, imprisonment of those opposed to her, curbs on freedom of speech etc. which forced her to hold elections. I do agree with you that it was a good thing that she, Sanjay Gandhi as wellas the Congress Party lost the elections. It brought them back down to earth and realise the power of the people." Can you find any absolution from the language? I She, as the Executive head of the government, is accountable for the declaration of emergency as well as for all the excesses committed during the emergency. All that I have done is to place the other facts on the table. We cannot turn a blind eye to the doings of Sanjay Gandhi, just because his widow Maneka and son Varun are now part of the opposite political spectrum. Regarding, the supersession of the judges and the favourable judgement, it is a matter of shame how constitutional bodies were undermined. But then it is a matter of fact that the imposition of emergency was upheld by the SC, however much we may disagree with the judgement. Naguesh Bhatcar: Also, you seem to have sidetracked the issue of Operation Blue Star, which I had mentioned in my previous response to your original posting. The Congress Party is yet to apologize to the Sikh families that were impacted by the killings, during the 1984 riots. Response: Sonia Gandhi as well as Dr Manmohan Singh have apologized for Operation Bluestar as well as the killings of the Sikhs.
