[Goanet] Russel Peters...
I came across the humour of Russel Peters online: Russel Peters: Indian versus Chinese http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtbyVFLl_7U&NR=1 Russell Dominic Peters[3] (born September 29, 1970)[4] is a Canadian stand-up comic and actor. Russell Peters was born in Toronto, Ontario to Eric and Maureen Peters, and raised in Brampton. He is of Anglo-Indian descent. His father was born in Bombay, India and worked as a federal meat inspector and his mother was born in Calcutta, India. He has an elder brother named Clayton who was also born in Calcutta.[5] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russel_Peters And was wondering if there are any other popular comedians of Goan (or East India/Mangalorean) descent popular in North America or other parts of the diaspora world. Re: [Goanet] Just another thought
Godfrey, my dear, When Goa's own Home minister brushes off the drug scene in Goa as just the media hype, it is not for nothing. He knows very well that Goans are stupid and that come what may, he will be in the driving seat after the next elections also and much thereafter. He also knows very well that the two legged white ants who eat the seized drugs away cannot be harmed, media hype or no media hype. After all he is the SIR to the two legged white ants in police uniforms. Ain't he??? Re: Mandovi being the septic tank for one and all does not come as a surprise. God created fish. But why did God have to create only Japanese? who love their fish? Couldn't he make the whole human race Japanese? Probably there was the problem of colouring the Japanese. Where as the Japanese do not allow even a drop of oil in their territorial waters because of their love for 'sushi', we indians.er sorry.. Goans .. wouldn't mind the shit-mixed-fish curry. If we did, then there would be controls. But then we in Goa have left these things to be decided by SONIA GANDHI and not bonafide Goans. Hopefully you are not too busy with your own affairs not to hold a lit match-stick to the Goan's tail in the hope that they will not remain between their legs for long. :-)) floriano from PPS to PPS 9890470896 www.goasu-raj.org - Original Message - From: Godfrey Pereira To: Floriano Lobo Sent: Friday, May 14, 2010 2:08 AM Subject: Just another thought Just read this headline last week. Scandal in Goa as Israeli drug dealer boasts of police corruption on YouTube You can bet your last Pao that behind the corrupt police are corrupt politicians. It is an official, state sponsored criminal Chain Gang. When one moves the other has to, otherwise there are Operational Problems that will hamper the gears of a well oiled machine. The Russians too are involved with the drug running. The Police know this, the politicians know this and many, many Goans know this. So... Soosaygadh my friends, stay Soosaygadh. A report recently stated: All cruise boats plying on the river Mandovi are disposing sewage waste directly into the river as they do not have any facility to treat it, Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) sources said on Wednesday. They have been dumping RAW SEWAGE directly into The Mandovi river for the last twenty years. Sweet Mother Of Saint Francis Xavier! How was your Fish Curry Last night? Soo-say-gadh my friends Soo-say-gadh. Slow and Easy. A Counter argument to this is: Why are you slandering us poor Goans. This happens all over India. Maybe., but Goa is a Paradise that is not lost yet. And the Goans once awakened, can and will do something about it. I hope... Please Note: They are raping your hills, savaging your water resources, literally throwing shit into your rivers, polluting your beaches, running drugs openly in your cities and putting up signs in your Cities that bar you, as an Indian, from entering that establishment. How much deeper do they need to grind your nutless groin down in the dirt till you feel the burning shame in your soul; of being violated, again and again and again! It is better to die on your feet, than to live on your knees.Emiliano Zapata said that. All Zapata was saying was: Please stand up. You do not have to do anything else. Just stand up and they will know that you will not take it anymore. They cannot see you if you continue to Crawl. If you live in Goa, and you are still part of the nutless silent majority, just one more thought. The next time you eat Fish Curry and Rice, think about The Mandovi River. Now go ahead, enjoy your meal-IN SILENCE! It's The Old Goan Way. Godfrey NY-USA

It's something that is only to be expected, like eating when you're hungry. If a stranger or someone from a rival clique steps on your clean, white sneakers, or makes a crack about your manhood, or laughs at you, putting a bullet in his heart or his head is seen by an awful lot of young people as an appropriate response. Re: [Goanet] tiatr in Canada
It is nice to hear from Agnelo Fernandes that he will make his acting debut in the tiatr Dukh, to be held on June 19 in Toronto. I am told that there could be couple of other new faces making their appearance on stage for the first time. Some of the seasoned tiatrists in Toronto are not in this year's tiatr. I know that at least one of them was unhappy with the writer/director Raymond (Jr) Menezes's ways of running the show. With two groups actively competing with each other and since actors can freely act for whoever they choose, some of them who disagree with Jr. Menezes's egotistical attitude get a chance in the other group called SAM and headed by Marshal Fernandes who staged his Chuk Konnachi? few months ago to a packed audience. There is no doubt that Dukh too will be a sold-out event. As it is often said, success goes to one's head. Sure that tiatrgoers will come for his show, Raymond has introudced a two-tier ticket system -- reserved and unreserved The reserved tickets have been priced at $25 and the unreserved at $20. It would have been a fine gesture if Raymond had kept a flat price of $20 but alotted the reserved seats to senior citizens who have been supportive of tiatrs for years. I know it could lead to abuse of the system as the tickets would be bought in the name of a senior and used by a non-senior person. However, some sort of monitoring system or safeguards could be put into place. Checking the person's identity when buying the ticket and also checking the person when he or she enters the hall and put the buyer's name on the seat would be fine, though not foolproof. Seniors need to get front seats because many of them lack good eyesight or many of them are hard of hearing. Seniors would be happy if such a consideration is made to them. After all, seniors have sustained the tiatr movement for years and continue to do so. In recent times, tiatrs have been making money. Knowing for sure that none of the actors are paid, it would be a kind gesture to pay these actors who contribute their time and talent to keep the tiatr movement going and also keep Konkani alive. The actors are not even paid "mileage". Actors also carry food and snacks for "pot luck" during rehearsals. So, where does the profits go? Obviously into the pockets of the producer/director or just the director because in most cases the producer is just a "dummy". I know that there is a core group in Raymond's team that manage the tiatr. What are their dividends in the profits is not known but those who know the situation well say that these people would not be there if there was nothing to gain financially. For long actors have grumbled that they get no penny for their acting but none have dared to challenge the producers or directors for fear that the person would be kept out of the next tiatr. I hear that the grumbling has now reached a higher pitch and with some of the noted actors staying out of Dukh a message seems to be sent to Raymond directly and indirectly to other producer/directors. Producer/directors often have a party after the tiatr that costs just a fraction of the profits. It is time for actors to stage a protest, literally. They could well vote with their feet by walking out of the tiatr. But many of them feel they are sort of doing a service to Konkani as well as trying to entertain the people. But sometimes enough is enough. To the best of my knowledge, the only person who paid mileage to the tiatrists was Lourdinho Rodrigues when he was the president of GKT. He set a good example but unfortunately nobody has followed it. The GKT was born out of a rift between some members of the Goan Theatrical Group (GTG) and its founder the late Richard Fernandes. Richard moved out and formed the GKT. Like Lourdinho, Richard was from Orlim, Salcette. I knew him well. Raymond and others have staged tiatrs that were "stolen" from noted India-based playwrights. Many of these tiatrs were modified and given different names. The names of the original writers were omitted. During one of my visits to Goa, I met the late M. Boyer, the doyen of tiatrists. He informed me that that he accosted Raymond in Margao and asked him why he had performed one of his tiatrs without his permission. He threatened to sue Raymond. Boyer said to me in Konkani, "Aven taka boroch bikdialo." Boyer said that Raymond was shaking in his pants. Raymond says that he later bought one of Boyer's tiatrs from the man himself and staged it in Toronto. If that was the case, Raymond would be the first to announce it to the world when the tiatr was performed many years ago. Even those who were involved in the tiatr don't remember Raymond mentioning it then. Another actor, Joe Moraes, who has been off stage for quite some time now, bought two plays from Boyer and Lourdino paid from his own pocket. In the 80s, the Benaulin-based tiartist Ligorio Fernandes gave me his play, Judas, which was well received in Goa,
[Goanet] Goanet Reader: Bleddy Goans ... and all that (FN, Herald)
Bleddy Goans ... and all that DEVIL'S ADVOCATE/Frederick Noronha It has been quite awhile since I've seen a piece of text stoke up so much heat and emotions in a positive way. More so, one that did not go about merely raking up divisions of religion or caste, nor even language. It wasn't even one of those bitterly-argued pieces of writing one sees ever so often nowadays, which is basically targeted at an individual we don't like. Instead, it was just a piece focussed on the environment; the crucial question of how to respond to the change that we in Goa are all facing at this very point of time. Admitted, the language used was rather strong. Someone by the name of Godfrey Pereira wrote an article titled "A Letter To The Bleddy Goans From An East Indian Bugger". If you want to see the text of what he wrote, visit: http://bit.ly/bc9guK After first emerging on Goanet, it quite did the rounds. It surfaced on various networks linked to Goa. In a world where email opens up new forms of communications, this means it reached far and wide. This brief text soon started benefitting from a 'viral marketing' campaign of sorts, which was never planned for it in the first place. Turns out that Godfrey is an ex-SUNDAY magazine (Kolkata) and INDIA TODAY journalist. And his argument is basically that Goans are doing nothing while their State's coast is turning into another Chowpatty, beach after beach is being decimated, and mining is greedily and unstoppably eating away at the interiors. In contrast, Godfrey praises the East Indians: "In Mumbai thousands of people from the ten villages of the Gorai-Uttan belt have been fighting Essel World [India's "largest amusement park" that's coming up near Borivali]. They are protesting against the proposed Special Entertainment Zone (SEZ) spread over 14,183 acres in the area. They know they stand to lose the core of their culture if this happens and so they are fighting this encroachment disguised as tourism. At least The East Indians there are trying." The reaction was swift and divided. Many agreed with him, even though Godfrey uses sharp language to castigate the Goan, while putting out his angrily-worded missive. Goan men are useless, while "the Goan women don't seem to care. Their sons are in The Gulf or Canada, sending money back home." Let's not dwell too much on the responses that emerged though. As could be anticipated, there was another kind of response though. Not all was supportive of Godfrey. The angry tone of his what-are-you-Goans-doing letter apart, he drew praise from some for his wake-up call. But others seemed defensive. What has happened to the East Indians in Mumbai anyway, was the tone of their reply. Or: who the hell are you to tell us what's to be done here? Further: you don't even know what's being attempted here. At least one latter from Seby Rodrigues, the campaigner on mining and other issues dubbed a Naxalite ironically by none other than Opposition leader Manohar Parrikar, make an articulate case. Seby pointed out to the struggles actually being taken up by people in interior Goa. The simple folk who were themselves affected by mining every day of their lives. Seby's documentation of the issue is also visible at http://mandgoa.blogspot.com and through other posts made in cyberspace. But then, these stories hardly ever emerge. The meek of the earth shalt not inherit the headlines, as Indira Gandhi once famously said. Their campaigns lack the immediacy, is bereft of the drama, and above all, these are simple people! * * * Godfrey did make us pause and think. Taken to its extreme, his logic -- and one that often makes sense -- is that we all are all to blame for things going wrong. We can't just blame Mr. Politician, The Faceless Bureaucrat, or even The Mining Lobby, and absolve ourselves of any responsibility. Five decades after the colonial sun set on Goa, the unanswered mystery is how we allow our minds to be colonised, how we can turn a blind eye to issues so close to us, and tolerate injustice even when we encounter it. That is one part of the reality. But things are more complex here. Goa's mess is also because of our own internal problems and divisions, our inability to build common perspectives on any issue, and our difficulty in sharing a common vision. One Goan will not trust another, and Catholic will distrust Hindu and vice versa (and, more recently, both have been ganging up to distrust the Muslim, specially the "migrant Muslim"). It's as if we have very different senses of history, geography and an even understanding of what's in our long-term interest -- depending on our religion, even our caste, our experien

COMMENT: It is difficult for me to comment on the events during the time of the First World War i.e. circa 1914. I doubt Antonio was present at that time either. I also hate to discuss someone who is unable to participate in a discussion about himself. Antonio surely is repeating what was told to him (hearsay). We all know how hearsay stories can evolve. Hence, I do not know how Antonio can be so categorical wrt some of the terms he has used. Even so I will ask Antonio the following questions. a1: Who sent him to Dabul? (BTW: in 2010, many Indian parents send their children to the US and UK) a2: Why was he not sent to a region (not under the Portuguese) which was next-door i.e. Ratnagiri, Sawantvadi, Karwar? b: Was he denied education in the 3Rs or was it just not available? Not being able to offer education and denial are distinctly different. The next thing I will hear a bright young kid from Velim say, will be is that he was DENIED education in Astrophysics in Velim .so he had to move all the way to Assolna, Aldona or Assagao. c: Did the Mestre himself know 'ritmethic'? What else did you expect him to advise your Dad? Hey, some of my cricket coaches and seniors were telling some of my colleagues to concentrate on cricket (practice daily for 4 hours) and forget about this dream of becoming a doctor or engineer. And some of us who had idolised these senior players like Hemant Kanitkar, Chetan Chauhan and Nicky Saldanha) would have probably followed such advice (and stayed on in college ...almost forever) . and forgotten education if it was not for the wise counsel from our guidance counsellors like Fr Romualdo D'Souza and Fr Vasco de Rego. d: Is it possible that Antonio is not 'righting' equitably on the matter? jc

[Goanet] RIP, FX D'Souza
Reading Goan Voice UK, I was sad to know about the death of Francis Xavier D'Souza. I met him many a time, including once in Montreal. I know he played a big role, particularly in framing the constitution of the National Association of Canadians with Origins in India (NACOI). He provided me with lot of information on the organisation. As with many Indian associations, NACOI was divided and there were clashes between two groups, with one headed by Sikhs and the other by Indians of other communities. NACOI ultimately passed into hands of the Sikhs. However, the original NACOI also functioned as it did not recognize the victory of the new committee of Sikhs. Don't know if both NACOI are still surviving. RIP, FX. Eugene Correia
[Goanet] An Observation By Godfrey Pereira
Dear Editor, My name is Godfrey Pereira. Recently I wrote an Article titled Letter To The Bleddy Goans From An East Indian Bugger". Thank you for publishing it. Here is another observation. I do hope that you have the space to publish this article Thank You So Much Godfrey Pereira E-mail: godfrey.pere...@hotmail.com Phone: 201 978 3027 _ By Godfrey Pereira Seen The Noose Today, Oh Boy! It's Beginning To Tighten Scandal in Goa as Israeli drug dealer boasts of police corruption on YouTube You can bet your last Pao, that behind the corrupt police, are rotten stinking fat politicians, licking their greasy pork chops. It is an official, state sponsored criminal Chain Gang. When one moves the other has to, otherwise there are Operational Problems that will hamper the gears of a well oiled machine that is not afraid of public scrutiny, because really, there is none. The Russians too are involved with the hard drug running. The Police know this, the politicians know this and many, many Goans know this. So... Soosaygadh my Goan friends, stay Soosaygadh. See Nothing. Do Nothing. Say Nothing. Soo-say-gadh my friends. Soo-say-gadh. Slow and Easy. A Counter argument to this is: Why are you slandering us poor Goans. This happens all over India. Maybe., but Goa is a Paradise that is not lost yet. And the Goans once awakened, can and will do something about it. I hope... Please Note: They are raping your hills, savaging your water resources, literally throwing shit into your rivers, polluting your beaches, running drugs openly in your cities and putting up “No Indian Allowed” signs in your Goa that bar you, as an Indian, from entering recreational establishments. And they are doing this right between your eyes. How much deeper do they need to grind your nutless groin down in the dirt till you feel the burning shame in your soul; of being brutally violated, again and again and again! Think about where that fish came from. Now go ahead, enjoy your meal-IN SILENCE! It's The Old Goan Way. Whose fault is it, that you, a Goan could literally be eating Shit Cody today! Re: [Goanet] COLUMN: PSPCB - a defunct board
By God ! Nisser, you have painted a bleak picture of Goa and Goans. Do you mean to say that citizens must check-out if hotels are doing their jobs, that the contractors are doing their jobs ? And what about the fattened PIGS that we have elected and are sitting in the posh offices in the Secretariat and Corporations?? They do not have duties to observe what is happening to Goa and Goans and take a corrective action? If the Benaulim and Colva people sat in the secretariat and corporation offices, there would be no need for these elected PIGS who do not even do the basic honorary job of consuming and clearing the shit. I have always said that Politics runs our lives. It is clear from your piece that we have left it to the PIGS. Time for Goans to fall behind PPS to iron things out. [Goanet] Fr. Araujo
I was mad at myself for forgetting to attend the funeral of Fr. Araujo. I knew him well and often met him at the Dufferin church when I worked part time in a newspaper office in the locality in the 80s. I was given an introduction to him by Marina who married a friend's brother in Mumbai. Fr. Araujo was the uncle of our own Roland Francis and both Marina, who lives in New York, and Roland are cousins. RIP, Fr. Araujo and my heartfelt sympathies to Roland. Eugene
[Goanet] Football grounds for Goans in Qatar
They say you cannot take a Goa out of a goan. Football is part of Goa which goans miss. It is an integral part of the life's of Goans, whether they are based in Goa or settled or working elsewhere. lack of space for football practice has been a mind boggling problem for the Goan community, in the rapidly changing landscape of Qatar, a country vying to host the 2022 world Cup. Whether conducting a football tournament or holding regular football training, is a Herculean task and it left up to community leaders like Jerson Sequeira, Walter Dias , Mauricio pereira, Melwin baretto to use their good contacts and reach out to their Friends and powers, in getting permission to conduct Goa-related football activities. Friday, Saturday are weekend days here in The GCC countries and time for leisure and it was no diffrent on May 14 when goans came in large number to indulge in the football activity at al Ahli grounds, some travelled as far from the industrial area, a drive of more than 30 minutes, during non-peak hours to play at Al Ahli grounds. Thanks to the initiative taken by Sao Jose De Areal born social worker based in Qatar, Mauricio Periera Here is the text of the message which Mauricio circulated among his Friends through SMS and through the mailing group of Goans in Qatar. [Goanet] Jazz Goa launches Fusion Lounge
Jazz Goa launches Fusion Lounge The Brown Indian Band's Fusion Lounge is a chilled out, laidback sound of indo-jazz fusion. The album features Dhiraj Kapadia on bansuri, Prashant Salil on santoor, Tony Dias on keyboards, Colin D'Cruz on fretless bass and Jayesh Dhargalkar on tabla. The Band led by Colin has floating members and has featured some of the most accomplished Indian classical musicians in concert with jazz virtuosos over the years. Indian classical music can be compared to jazz as both are forms of improvised music. Indian classical music is linear and uses just one scale (raga) to improvise within a composition whereas jazz has a much broader palette for improvisation where multiple scales can be used to improvise through harmonic changes. Indian classical music however, has some of the world's most complex rhythm structures and subtle quarter tones that add an exciting new dimension to jazz. The Brown Indian Band uses the best of both forms of improvisation to create India's contribution to world music. The Brown Indian band had performed as fourteen member ensemble at the Kala Academy for the first international film festival in Goa. Fusion Lounge is available free of cost at www.brownindianband.com
[Goanet] The Census being conducted haphazardly
The Census being conducted haphazardly Published on: May 14, 2010 - 01:37 BY JOHN ERIC GOMES If there was any proof required for the complete shambles in our Administration, then the ongoing census exercise is providing it in full measure. The recording of the census is an important exercise with lifelong implications and needs to be done systematically and correctly, and to ensure that this is done properly, there are detailed orders and rules laid down. However, as usual there is bad implementation of these. There is utter mismanagement and chaos, as far as the census is concerned. The administration has not taken into consideration that people have jobs and responsibilities, some have senior citizens under their care or have to attend to patients, deaths and other emergencies. The citizens are put to a lot of unnecessary travel expense, trouble, stress and forced to waste their precious time! Let me list my experience with the hope that this opens the authority’s eyes and action is taken to streamline the process. Someone told somebody in my colony to go to Salvador do Mundo panchayat office, on a certain day. They informed only a few, as for the others, another day was scheduled for the same. We could not be informed because our colony office was not informed. I found out that we come under the North Goa Mapusa Census Cell, which had no idea of UIN exercise, and they were doing coastal areas and we did not figure in the exercise yet! This puzzled me because someone had already come a week back for Census. Anyway, the mamlatdar kindly stated that he would be organising the photography session in our area, and would let us know when. However, no information was forthcoming. Phone calls to the panchayat are not attended to. On sending a person to the panchayat, nothing could be found because the talathi had not come! So I rang up the Mapusa Cell who informed me that the mamlatdar has not come that morning. I got his cell phone number and it was unattended like the panchayat number. People did go to the Panchayat on day scheduled by previous word of mouth information. There were huge queues and some made two or three unsuccessful trips as they were going outstation. I finally got the collector North Goa, Panaji on the phone, who said he would speak to the mamlatdar. I was surprised to be suddenly told by the society secretary, one day, that they have come from 10.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. to do the needful. Since no previous information was given, nothing could be organised. The staff had two books listing people’s priority. Busy people suddenly called from their commitments, were annoyed and frustrated. One of the government staff was from another area, substituting the person gone on leave for his wedding. I would beg the authorities to kindly consider the tremendous heat and inconvenience and to please organise and inform people well in time so we all can cooperate to help each other do a good job. http://www.navhindtimes.in/news/census-being-conducted-haphazardly
Re: [Goanet] Were colonial Goans, sour grapes ?
I am not questioning for a moment the reality of Goa being a elite-driven plutocracy (with strong caste connotations) in the pre-1961 era, far more than it is even now. However, that reality doesn't give us the license to jump to just about any conclusions about the place. Literacy in 1961 was *not* about 10%, it was far higher, and quite comparable (if not better than) many other parts of India, except Kerala and a few other places. I am open to correction if the figures speak otherwise. The literacy rate increased in Goa from 10.91% in 1881 to 17.5% in 1931 and 31.23% in 1960. The Old Conquests hadthe highest number of literate and educated persons. Among the Old Conquest talukas, Bardez had a high literacy rate, even though it had less number of schools per 100 sq.km. This could be because of greater contacts with the outside world and better economic conditions. In its turn, literacy helped to maintain better living conditions. Among the New Conquest talukas, Ponda had higher literacy rate of 7.85% in 1881. It rose steadily to 14.2% in 1921 and 22.46% in 1960. Minimum literacy rate wa in Satari. The literacy rate was higher among the Catholics and Muslims, Many Hindus knew to read andwrite in more than one language. Source Health and Hygiene in Colonial Goa (1510-1961) by Fatima da Silva Gracias. Text available online. P 56 This page shows that Goa was ahead of most Indian states in terms of literacy in 1971, but that was a full decade after the end of Portuguese rule, and one could quibble over where the credit should go: http://www.education.nic.in/cd50years/g/z/EI/0ZEI0401.htm Kerala, Mizoram, Chandigarh, Pondicherry were ahead then too... [Goanet] Feted abroad, rebuffed at home
Feted abroad, rebuffed at home Andrew Pereira, TNN, May 14, 2010, 01.46am IST PANAJI: Paltadacho Munis may have won laurels for the state at film festivals abroad, but at home it has failed to make the cut. The state's biggest multiplex has refused to screen the Konkani award-winner and the film's director Laxmikant Shetgaonkar is quite bitter about it. "We're recognized abroad, but not here," Shetgaonkar told TOI on Thursday. Paltadacho Munis recently won the best film-grand jury award at the Indian film festival of Los Angeles beating other entries from India, including mainstream Bollywood movies. The film also won the Discovery award at the Toronto Film Festival, besides being selected to participate at international festivals at Berlin, Cairo, Palm Springs, Hong Kong, and Istanbul. "I asked Inox for a slot, but they said they didn't have a regional slot," Shetgaonkar said. "They felt that regional films are not commercially viable, and asked me for 70% of the earnings from the ticket collection, which is a huge amount and certainly not viable for me," he added. "I had offered 50%, but they feel these movies don't work. I even mentioned to them the places around the world where we have been asked to participate, but it didn't work out," Shetgaonkar said. Inox, however, refuted the allegations. "There was no talk of 70%. All our slots were full, that is the reason we could not screen the film. In fact, just last month we screened a Konkani film Jaagor, which ran for 25 days and did well at the box office," an Inox spokesperson said from Mumbai. Shetgaonkar added, "This problem is not just in Goa, but across India. Multiplexes do not encourage regional films. However, these are the movies which can impact people." http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Feted-abroad-rebuffed-at-home/articleshow/5928515.cms
