[Goanet] World’s Best 100 Countries- INDIA # 78, Kite Flying # 1
INDIA # 78 : World’s Best 100 Countries. Kite Flying # 1 India is rank 78th among the world’s best 100 countries on the globe, after Spain (21st), Slovenia (24), Czech Republic (25), Portugal, Croatia, Chile, Slovakia, Estonia, Costa Rica, Lativia, Malaysia (37), Panama, Peru, Jamaica, Brazil, Ukraine, Belarus, Thailand (58), China (59), Srilanka (66), Indonesia (73), Honduras (76), Bolivia (77) !!! Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is the model of what a political leader should be, says Mohamed El Baradei, former director general of International Atomic Energy Agency ( IAEA). Singh a sophisticated former economist, has played a key role in the country's emergence as one of the rising powers of the 21st century, engineering the transition from stagnant socialism to a spectacular takeoff in the global economy. But it's Singh's unassuming personal style that really inspires awe among his fellow global luminaries, who praise him for being modest, humble, and incorruptible. On sectors like Education, Health, Quality of Life, India is rated down on the scale with 87, 82 and 87 respectively. What is more surprising is the survey has rated India as a stable economy with 48th rank. Newsweek admits, they would be the first to admit that like any list, this one isn’t perfect. A recent study conducted by Newsweek magazine is based on data provided derived from CIA world fact book, World Bank, Vision of Humanity, United Nations Development Program (UNDP), World Health Organisation (WHO), World Economic Forum, Gender Gap, Global Insight, United Nations (UN) office on Drugs and Crime, Yale’s Environmental Performance Index, EIU, Freedom House and Political Risk Services. [Goanet] Tribute to a Hindu father
*Tribute to a Hindu father* I don't know what to say when some people question my being a Hindu bybirth. Very few are interested in knowing about the pains I took for myreligious and spiritual education in a family which was very ritualistic. Myfather was an epitome of Hinduism as he understood it from his perspective. Joao says: Thank you for sharing this beutiful piece of writing with us. Traditionally, we know how much Hindus love trees and this piece made me feel the deep spirituality of what it means to be a Hindu. I was deeply moved. Thank you again. Celebrate life! .As I am getting older, I suppose, I can catch his life from a more matureperspective. He may forgive for any transgression.I know him as a very devout Hindu. I have not seen anyone performing a pujaeveryday for 4-5 hours, for more than 60 years, three times a day. Thenthere were pilgrimages, yadnyas, abhisheks at temples. We couldn't study at night when he chanted (japa) OM NAMAH SHIVAYfour-five thousand times. The century old house with old fashioned tileswould reverberate with the chant. He would not stop till midnight. Then it would begin all over again in the morning, then in the afternoon, late. He would have the lunch at 4 or 5 PM.Once I asked him-Father why are you doing all this?He replied innocently- I am collecting 'punya' for all of you and for yourkids when they would be born. He had full faith in karmavipaka. He never missed a single Hindu festival. We are branded GSB vaishnavaitesowing allegiance to Partagali monastery. But my father was a polytheist. In his pantheon our family deity-Lord Ganesha was on top, followed by LordSiva, then Lord Vishnu, Lord Ramachandra and Lord Krishna. But he also worshiped our sthandevata-Sri Damodar of Margao/Zambaulim. He was also fond of Lord Hanuman. Whatever he chanted we also memorizedautomatically. He fed the crows and cows without fail and no beggar went without food oralmsHe was cheerful in welcoming every guest. He never discussed the guest'sreligion or caste. Everyone shared the table equally.Actually I became aware about castes only later, in the college. As school going kids he imposed prayers on us and I blindly followed themfor some years before starting my own exploration in the srutis and smrutisand vedanta. I began arguing with him on understanding the meaning of the Sanskritverses. I gave him the translation of mantrapushpanjali. He was impressed. But he was unhappy as I gave up the normal rituals one byone. With some persuasion he had my thread ceremony. But I don't wear thesacred thread any more. At one point he thought that I had become a 'nastik- an atheist. But when he heard me reading the full text of srimadbhagavadgeeta after myuncle Jagganath Kamat expired, he changed his impression. there would be problems, it is Ok now since you've married Melinda he saidwhile blessing my wife. But I knew that he was somewhat unhappy. He wasworried about my younger sister Nilima's marriage after I married aChristian. In fact we as a couple were avoided like a plague for several years , likeuntouchables by all those near and dear, who were afraid that their sons anddaughters would not find any match within the community ( and caste). it wasonly after they took care of their matches that diplomatic channels' wereslowly opened. That was a face of the society which I had failed torecognise earlier. My father could not offer any rational explanation of these taboos, unwritten codes.. as we were suffering...he understood my despair but oldage did not permit him to do anything...at least he did not disown a rebelson...Due to family objections me and Melinda had to leave the house on the day ofour civil registration. A friend arranged accomodation for us. We had tobuild our nest from nothing, stick by stick...But we continued to interact with him. I gave him the books which he had noopportunity to read earlier. These included Dnyaneshwari, Tukaramachi gatha,Dasbodh, translations of major Upanishads. He immersed himself in reading these texts in the final phase of his life. Then my sister Nilima married John Eric Menezes. The almighty had taken careof divine justice. It was good to have John as my brother in law. He is very cultured and joinsus in annual chavath family get together. My father taught us self respect-swabhiman. He used to saybaithana to aise baithana ki koi na bole utth. bolna to aise bolna ki koina bole zooth'To educate and feed a large family he slogged without rest. If he were tomiss the last bus to Calapur-he would walk from Panaji to st Cruz even whenit rained. He abhorred all types of self declared Godmen. They are frauds, he used toproclaim. I see his point now in the growing spiritual market. After he completed 80 years, he began losing his eyesight. That was the timeI began interviewing him on family history. Our discussion turned to spiritual matters. I spent several evenings with him discussing vedanta. Then I lectured him on tatvam asi,

[Goanet] Leo Pinto, India's oldest Olympian, passes away
Leo Pinto, India's oldest Olympian, passes away Pradeep Vijayakar, TNN, Aug 10, 2010, 08.49pm IST MUMBAI: I will get one Diwali card less this year. The unfailing sender of that card for the last decade or so, golden hockey Olympian Leo Hillary Knowles Pinto passed away on Tuesday aged 96, the oldest living Indian Olympian or sportsperson. He is survived by his daughter Susan and son Darryl. His daughter said Pinto's faculties were gradually failing. I gave him breakfast this morning and left. He passed away in the afternoon. His funeral will be held at the St Francis D'Assisi church at Mount Mary steps Bandra at 9.30 on Wednesday. In 1936, he was a certainty for the Berlin Olympics but for a serious concussion of the brain during the Olympic trials. Pinto was India's goalkeeper at the London Olympics in 1948 when India won gold. Born in Nairobi, Pinto came to Goa and then Bombay, where he studied at Antonio De Souza and St Stanislaus. At Anza, he learnt to play hockey, football, cricket, badminton and boxing. Athletics also claimed Leo's interest and in one year he carried off the Junior Championship. At the age of 13 Leo took, almost instinctively it now seems, the decision to don pads and become a goalie - a position he was later to be hailed as one of the greats in the world of hockey. He played his first major matches in the Aga Khan Hockey Tournament for the Byculla Rovers at a young age. He joined St. Xavier's College and represented the college in all the Inter College tournaments in the company of stalwarts of the game like Owen Ferreira, Willie Fernandes, Thimaya, Fr. Fritz and Owen Pinto. Pinto had a good life with Tata Sports Club who made him manager of their hockey team even while he was playing. RK Vissanji employed him post-retirement at Wallace Flour Mills. In 1972, Pinto was coach of the Indian Olympic team and served on the Bombay Hockey Association in the 70s. He was also a singer. Bach's Ave Maria was a favourite. About his goalkeeping he would say, I would narrow down the angle for the penalty-corner hitter by advancing towards him. I would watch the pusher and take off. In his time goalies didn't face the penalty corner hitters. The one who was fouled would take a penalty bully against the one who made the foul. In the 1948 final against England, Leo was fouled. He removed his pads and took the bully and scored goal No 4 against the England captain. That leaves him unique as a goalie who scored. His work under the bar in the semifinal against Holland was talked of highly. Looking back he had said, I knew the Dutch would rise to glory from seeing then at London. He had felt sorry for Indian hockey and said it would not rise to those heights until they had an astroturf in every corner. He had hoped to see that day dawn. Alas it won't. Also the century. Before I left I got some golden tips for healthy life which I repeat. Leo Pinto's tips for a healthy life 1. Three glasses of water and a short walk. 2. Meditate, pray to God for forgiveness of sins and grant a joyous successful day. 3. Breakfast of four dry almonds soaked overnight in water. Calcium and multi-vitamin tablets. Tea rather than coffee. 4. For meals eat polis made of bran rather than white bread. Refrain eating red meat after touching fifty. Fish, vegetables, fruit (bananas, papaya, apples). Occasionally eat chicken. Avoid rice, potatoes, biscuits, white bread, ghee, chappatis. No drinking water during meals, half an hour before or after. 5. Two glasses of water at 10 a.m., two at noon, two at 2.30 p.m., two at six and one before retiring. 6. At least an hour's sleep in the afternoon. 7. Brisk walk in the evening for about half an hour, freehand exercises either before or after walk. 8. Eat early at night, say 7.30 p.m. Go to bed by 10.30 p.m. 9. Never get constipated, have a dry fig to get good motion. 10. Never waste time, read books, do household work or outdoor jobs - In short a disciplined life. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/more-sports/hockey/Leo-Pinto-Indias-oldest-Olympian-passes-away/articleshow/6288763.cms * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Goa-launch of the well-received *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho on Aug 29, 2010 (Sunday) at 11 am at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao. [Goanet] Evil Qualities.........
All evil qualities and actions proceed from anger. If you can eradicate anger, all bad qualities will die by themselves. Anger begets eight kinds of vices: injustice, rashness, persecution, jealousy, taking possession of others’ property, killing, harsh words and cruelty. When a man’s desire is not gratified and when one stands in the way of its fulfillment, the man becomes angry. The desire gets transmuted into anger. When one is under the sway of anger, he will commit all sorts of sinful deeds. He loses his memory; his understanding becomes clouded; and his intellect gets perverted. Never do anything thattaints your mind. Wrong actions cause negative or evil mental vibrations that are reflected in your whole appearance and personality. Engage in those actions and thoughts that nurture the good qualities you want to have. When I saw these packets, it atone reminded me of those days when I was about 7. Bought couple of packets (product from Ooty?) Could not wait to open and eat one. The moment I left one on my tongue, oh my God, it instantly took me back to the past say early 50’s. The same flavour, the same taste. My father being ‘tarvotti’ (Seaman), used to bring loads of such sweets packed in large square tins (Half size of packed Oil tins or half sized tins they use as unit of measurement for selling locally produce salt). I used to finish the tin very quickly as I also had a third hand which only gives out.. Check this out? [Goanet] Govt. of India, concerned about unbridled mining?
Excerpt:- COMMODITY RETREAT Mining and energy shares fell along with commodity prices as demand concerns clouded the outlook. India-focused mining group Vedanta Resources (VED.Lhttp://uk.reuters.com/business/quotes/overview?symbol=VED.L) shed 5.3 percent after India's environment ministry rejected a plan by Vedanta to mine bauxite in an eastern state, saying it violated forest laws. [ID:nSGE67N06M] Vedanta is already facing regulatory hurdles in its bid for control of Cairn India (CAIL.BOhttp://uk.reuters.com/business/quotes/overview?symbol=CAIL.BO), a potential deal valued at $9.6 billion that could give the group a slice of India's oil reserves. However, India's state-run Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC.BOhttp://uk.reuters.com/business/quotes/overview?symbol=ONGC.BO), should have the last word in Vedanta Resources' (VED.Lhttp://uk.reuters.com/business/quotes/overview?symbol=VED.L) proposed acquisition of Cairn India (CAIL.BOhttp://uk.reuters.com/business/quotes/overview?symbol=CAIL.BO), Trade Minister Anand Sharma said. Re: [Goanet] As India Celebrates-Six Deadly Sins That Plague India+ the seventh sin
JC's response to Vasant Baliga (VB) Dear Vasantbab .Thank you for the courtesy of your well thought out response. My own thoughts are interspersed. VB [1]: The military takeover of Goa was, in my opinion, wrong and misplaced and was contrary to India's professed foreign policy at that time-Nehru spoiled the global image of India for temporary political gain and perhaps to divert public attention from other pressing matters. JC [1]: Professed policies and lip service having been noted, 1961 was an opportune time to divert attention from the other issues facing the populace especially as a general election loomed. Politicians have only one goal i.e. re-election. That is the only method of retaining power, influence and amassing wealth while producing this drama about 'service' and 'democratic will of the people'. -- VB [2]: Although Salazar was adamant against negotiation on Goa,sooner or later Portugal would have negotiated-subsequent events proved that with the collapse of his fascist dictatorship in the mid seventies and the Carnation revolution. JC [2]: If one really believes in democracy, one should start with consulting the people for whom 'decisions' are being made. Neither Salazar nor Nehru sought to engage Goans in discussions about their future. So, I ask, what democracy? -- VB [3]: Democracy has it’s flaws, but is the only system where a robustly free press, independent judiciary and periodic elections hold people accountable.Dictatorship of any kind can never be a substitute. JC [3]: Democracy is like Milk. Milk is available as Full Fat, 2%, 1% and Fat Free. So also, Democracy. Politicians control funds and licensing of news-media (until recently, even news-print was controlled). The Judiciary at the top is usually principled - but one needs to have money and good legal advice to overcome the hurdles in the lower rungs. And then, we have unscrupulous lawyers -- VB [4]: The PM is personally honest but presides over a corrupt Cabal. Goa suffers in this regard, like the rest of India and has it's share or more of dishonest politicians. JC [4]: But are the members of the 'cabal' not the one's who have been elected by the process termed as 'democracy'? As far as 'dishonest politicians' are concerned, are you aware of any corrupt Goa politicians (and civil administrators) in the first 60 years of the 20th century? What happened thereafter? -- VB [5]: Now as regards development of Goa from 1961 onwards-it presently has the third highest per capita income of Rupees 1,06,000,just behind Delhi and Chandigarh. JC [5]: The per capita income for Goa was always higher than for Indian States - Such data and figures are skewed (Gaussian distribution) and would benefit from a study of the folks in the middle 95% -- VB [6]: In the Sixties there was no electricity and water supply in the villages and hardly any pucca road connectivity. Literacy is now at 80% as opposed to 30% in 1961. Healthcare access as also telecommunications and road connectivity have also vastly improved. JC [6] Considering that 'water supply' is different from 'availability of water', I would suggest that the vast majority of Goans had more than enough clean drinking well water in 1960. The other indicators (I hope) have also commensurately increased (with time) in Karwar, Sawantvadi, Hubli, North Kanara and Ratnagiri. -- VB [7]: There is no dire poverty in Goa, as we know it, as compared to the rest of India. JC [7]: If true, No difference from 1960 -- VB [8]: Portugal did not invest adequately in Goa's infrastructure-the British did pay attention to India's infrastructure. JC [8]: You mean to suggest that Portugal did not build schools, hospitals, non-collapsing bridges and flood-drainage systems (as in Panjim)? I, for one, would have thought that compared to what resources and wealth Britain took from India, Britain did near-nothing for India. We all know, do we not .WHO swiped the funds belonging to the sons and daughters of the SOIL? [Goanet] Goa's landscape
The greatness of Bharat democracy is the freedom for goondagiri and mob culture, like you did when you gheraoed Cruz from the education dept. Either you learnt this act from the bharatis or it came from the MauMau. BTW protests in Macau can be very vocal. But what is there to protest when the govt subsidises power, health and a cheque which amounts to R4 every year to its population and plus imported labour! Kind regards BC Sr. Colaco, Amcheatoklenanimonankaimbigdonkna. Temtujeamonant. The greatness of Bharat is its Democracy. Any misconceptions are in your mind and imagination. We are a free country and we are free to express our views in any part of our country, Goa included, unlike in Portuguese Goa. BTW why don't you criticize the Chinese in your Macau haven and then write about the result on Goanet (that is if you live to tell the tale after doing so) Come to Goa and live in the free air of FREEDOM. We will welcome our prodigals with open arms and hearts. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Goa-launch of the well-received *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho on Aug 29, 2010 (Sunday) at 11 am at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao. [Goanet] The orphaned farms of Goa-a tragedy unfolding as you tour the countryside during monsoon-2010
The orphaned farms of Goa Kamati, tukam amche kidyak podla, Tuze xet aasa? Tu kalafurcho re, kay bhailo? I had been heckled for telling the truth. By my own Goan brethern... I Know that I have no farmland, or a plot of land , even a house of my own.. but what I have is a vision of Goa, for Goans and their generations to come... Why blame the outsiders?. We build slums for them. What our blue blooded Niz Goenkars , esp the Goan farm land owners, tenant cum cultivators are doing?. They are taking crops of scrapyards, hutments, dance floors, garages in their farms… Vast tracts of farms on banks of Chapora/Colvale and Terekhol river have been leased out to deposit mountains of alluvial sand Paddy fields of Camurlim and Tuyem are mined for windowpane oyster shells to make lime in Sawantwadi Entrance to Mapusa and Margao from Panaji showcases how farms are being (mis) used.. In several suburban villages the annual konsachem fest' has remained just a ritual.. where are the 'konsam?... Within four to six years many villages like St. Cruz and Taleigao would not be left with any plot to get their konsam for the feast...but I'm sure these would be flown in from Bangkok Compare and contrast the picture… Farmers have land but are not willing to cultivate..despite a shower of subsidies Non farmers like me are willing to do intensive horticulture, but there is no land…nobody is willing to lease even a millimetre Farming doesn’t mean only rice farming. Many other crops can be cultivated profitably. It is a tragi-comic situation in Goa. Urban farmers in nearby Nagali Taleigao take 50 crops (fruits, flowers, vegetables, medicinal plants) Watch them in action http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJh-xGqz6hU View partially cultivated Salvador da Mundo khazans http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEQSMMvxDj4 now notorious for illegal pisciculture The Chorao Farmers club is doing very well. They even sell high quality packaged rice in attractive bags.Taleigao, Chorao are success stories… Those who don’t wish to cultivate just hold on to the land waiting for windfall income from conversion. The government has admitted that despite provision in tenancy act it doesn’t wish to assume the management of lands uncultivated for 3 years as per section 36. The lands can be then allotted to those willing to cultivate them. What’s the fate of this 400 hectares rice bowl in Curca-Santana valley, Tiswadi? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BqHar6ESrY And this one- the low lying Khazans between Taleigao and Dhakli Morombim?. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJh-xGqz6hU I alongwith others (Dilip Borkar, Victoria Fernandes, Sushrut Martins) had staged a rasta roko and went to jail on Aug. 25, 1988 . For two years (Oct. 1988 to Jan. 1991) I also appeared in the high court personally at my cost and argued a PIL ( one of the first in Goa) to ensure that Pantecantor, Chirculem , Novo bandh would not breach again and these farms would never get flooded again…but 1200 farmers of Calapur have let me down miserably, despite several motivational meetings. Today when I see familiar people from Merces and St. Cruz filling the low lying farms, I feel defeated. THESE ARE OUR OWN PEOPLE. The absentee landlordism needs to be stopped. Contract farming is not the solution. We need to follow the success stories of Taleigao and Chorao. The demand for local tropical fruits and vegetables is growing. The above orphaned areas can meet the need of whole taluka. It is a crime to keep the fertile land uncultivated. It is bigger crime to convert the land for parking fruit carts, godowns, dance floors, scrapyards, garages, farmhouses cum residential complexes…all the villages in Goa need to come out with their annual cultivation and cropping plans and punish those who keep their lands uncultivated. Let Calapur, Morombim farmers lease out their lands to Taleigao, Chorao farmers... The only megaproject which Goans could undertake is the megaproject of ploughing the fields again at all costs Farms of Goa are not just pieces of land on cadastral survey maps. They are living natural and cultural ecosystems. There may not be farmers' suicides in Goa. But ours would be the only society to commit a mass 'harakiri' by orphaning the fertile farms. The point of no return is reaching soon... The day Goan society commits itself to till, plough every mm piece of land , not by compulsion but by inner conviction, as a sacred duty would be golden day for Goa. Actually that is the real message of festival like 'chavath'-worship of Lord Ganapati. But who cares? Let us wait for that day... -- Dr. Nandkumar Kamat, GOA * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Goa-launch of the well-received *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho on Aug 29, 2010 (Sunday) at 11 am at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao. This might be of interest to the US residents on this list. It is getting increasing clear, that the financial situation in the US is headed even deeper in the hole. [Goanet] HOME MINISTER'S TRAVEL ADVISORY
As if the spurt in thefts and house breaking in Goa was just seasonal, the Home Minister, Ravi Naik, has cautioned Goans to lock their houses properly if they plan to travel out during the ensuing Ganesh holidays. He has also advised them to carry along with them their valuables if possible. How can you expect people to travel in comfort and ease while also having to cart around their valuables? Surprisingly, the Home Minister has not advised the Aam Aadmi to leave their valuables in the safe custody of the nearest police station or police outpost. With white ants known to eat confiscated drugs stored at the police headquarters, the police authorities may be apprehensive that gold and other valuables may be swallowed by bigger vultures. So have the police abdicated their duty of patrolling our streets and maintaining law and order? May be the armed forces should be called in to make our streets safe. Temples, churches and mosques have already been told to fend for themselves by having their own security. For Goans who once slept with their doors and windows open, the day may not be far when every household will need to be safeguarded by a private security guard. Re: [Goanet] Medjugorje Visions Proven Not A Deception
I have a feeling that all of us, Catholic fellows and girls 'of a certain age', have gone through a Fatima (Miracle of the Sun) phase of great enthusiasm; and I suppose *Medjugoria* is somewhat in the same vein, as could be *Batim* in Goa as of the past five years or so. I will not apologize for 'ignorance', having little technical savvy, and knowing or caring little about whether ECG can give credible data or not. But will apologize if what I am about to record may sound trivializing---something which I do not intend. I'm reminded of a segment from the novel/play/movie *Breakfast at Tiffany's*, in which someone describes 'Holly Golightly' as a 'FAKE'. The response was, Oh, yeah; she is a fake, alright,---but she's a *real fake*. Had an exchange once with friend over a pretty flower, in which he asked me, Is that real, or plastic?. I felt obliged to reply, It's a* real* plastic flower. I'm prepared to think for myself, concerning *Lourdes*, *Fatima*, * Medjugoria*, etc., as in some mysterious way deriving from the 'natural order of things'. I have yet to appreciate opinions which credit Portuguese President Salazar with promoting *Fatima* with national and imperialistic (perhaps even commercial) varieties of 'piety'. My rationale for maintaining a sense of respect and reverence for such visionary experiences, is because of the 'Faith of our Fathers', going all the way back to early Christian times when allegorical accounts of miracles, the Nativity Stories, and the like had to be reckoned as material/temporal *historical* events, if one were to avoid the stigma of 'heresy'. I feel that 'realities', neuro-psychological, allegorical/metaphorical, or whatever, may more precisely be regarded as just that---but this does not mean that they are less 'real' because of it. In fact perhaps the 'imagined' may at times be more real than real. If one wants to dub them with such dramatic labels as 'hysteria', well and good; I think then that the children of Lourdes and Fatima may have been in some sense subjects (not 'victims') of a phenomenon partaking of hysteria, while still being genuinely 'little saints, or angels if you will'.I do not think that the term 'fake' need even arise, in the discussion. I recommend the books* 'The Pagan Christ'* and *'Water into Wine'*, by my Canadian compatriot (Biblical and Linguistic Scholar) Tom Harpur---available from AmazonUK, or India's *Flipkart.com * On 8/24/10, Dr. Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão drferdina...@hotmail.com wrote: SANTOSH HELEKAR wrote : The claims made about the so-called scientific studies in the links below are not credible from the neurophysiological standpoint. Jim, There is a way to benefit financially from this mess. I have been doing so for the last five years. Ironically, by keeping interest rates at near zero, the US government itself has become one of the biggest beneficiaries of the current mess. Yep, the US govt borrowed the free money idea from President Mugabe. Fed Charmian, Bernanke, has a better idea. [Goanet] 1 held for highlighting `garbage menace' issue
Hats off to Anthony D’Silva and the other activists for highlighting their concerns over all the issues that are affecting Goa and Goans this Independence Day . For speaking out on our behalf against the garbage menace the police chose to arrest Anthony D’Silva which is down-right shocking! They should be focusing their energies towards solving all the murders, crimes, burglaries instead of harassing the Common man in Goa. Even the High Court of Bombay at Goa has told the Village Panchayats not to issue fresh licences for construction licences until they comply with the earlier court directions regarding garbage disposal. Our Village Panchayats along with the Town and Country Planning and other Government Departments are too busy flouting all the rules for their Builder buddies so that Goa becomes a concrete jungle comply with the instructions of the High Court of Bombay at Goa? That's to be seen. The Builders-Politician-Government Machinery nexus is too strong and it's obvious that they will do everything possible to destroy Goa and do everything possible to have their way. While the common man in Goa has to face the consequences of the Goa Government’s “development” that they are hoisting on us no one is ready to solve the issues like garbage disposal. We've seen how the MLA of Cortalim Constituency Mauvin Godinho at the recent Assembly Session came out with a devious scheme asking for 100,000 square metres of precious Goan land in his Constituency to set up a garbage disposal unit for just 6 villages! He is working overtime to make sure that the real estate lobby is protected at any cost and is known to issue threats to poor villagers not to oppose the development that his builder friends have planned for Goa. The ads in the newspapers that the Real Estate Lobby put out to wish him for his Birthday was enough evidence where they all have their undying love pouring out in public and why. Not to be missed was the one page write-up by his cousin Agnelo Alcacoas from Queeny Realty Estate along with photographs of the Minister’s family including his wife and children. Interestingly that one page ad was paid by the Contractor who was awarded the contract of constructing Kala Bhavan at Sancoale! ** Subject: [Goanet] 1 held for highlighting `garbage menace' issue 1 held for highlighting `garbage menace' issue TNN, Aug 16, 2010, 03.55am IST MARGAO: Margao police on Sunday morning detained one Anthony D'Silava who was spreading the Freedom from garbage message by seating on the benches of the Agakhan park, in front of the South Goa Collectorate building, Margao, to mark the Independence day. D'Silava was released after several NGOs from Salcete took out a morcha to the police station. Margao town police inspectorSantosh Desai claimed that Anthony D'Silava was detained to avoid any law order problem. D'Silava, who hails from Velim, had put up posters with several slogans. One of the posters read 'God Gave Us Sunshine, God Gave Us Rains, U Give Us Freedom From Garbage, Don't Watch Goa Going Down The Drain'. Another poster appealed to the chief minister and public works department minister `Digambara Digambara Garbegichem Kitem Tori Kara, Churchill Churchill Ghal More Garbegiche Mill'. Speaking to TOI after his release, D'Silava said It is taking away the freedom of even watching the unfurling of the national flag. I was seating with the message to officials who were supposed to attend the function. It was for finding a solution for the plastic menace in Goa and that solution has to come from the higher authorities. We have plastic bins in villages to collect the garbage. Plastic and tyres are burnt in the open. The solution has to come from higher authorities, as money is required to install a garbage plant. If the question was of a few thousand rupees people would not have asked the government, they would have contributed to the same. Politicians are cooking up stories. I am worried about thermocol and plastic garbage, said D'Silava. By detaining me, police has taken away my freedom. We are not terrorists. I have used the discarded tyres with a message. We in Velim, Assolna and Chinchinim have used the discarded tyres to put up signboards which show the roadsigns, village roads etc, explained D'Silava I am not associated with anybody and not with any group. It is a funny thing that police detains a person who wants to spread a message for a right cause. India is a democratic country and I have the freedom of expressing myself. So also the police had no right to snatch away the Indian National Flag, which I was holding. The Indian Flag act has given me the right. he said.
