[Goanet] NATIONAL PEOPLE'S TRIBUNAL ON KANDHAMAL - JURY'S PRELIMINARY FINDINGS RECOMMENDATIONS
*NATIONAL PEOPLE’S TRIBUNAL ON KANDHAMAL* *JURY’S PRELIMINARY FINDINGS RECOMMENDATIONS* *24 AUGUST 2010* The National People’s Tribunal (NPT) on Kandhamal, held in New Delhi on 22-24 August 2010, was organized by the National Solidarity Forum - a countrywide solidarity platform of concerned social activists, media persons, researchers, legal experts, film makers, artists, writers, scientists and civil society organizations to assist the victims and survivors of the Kandhamal violence 2008 to seek justice, accountability and peace and to restore the victim-survivors’ right to a dignified life. The jury of the NPT was headed by *Justice A.P. Shah*, former Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. Joining him as jury members were *Harsh Mander (*member of National Advisory Council), *Mahesh Bhatt *(film maker and activist), *Miloon Kothari *(former UN Special Rapporteur on Right to Housing), *P. S. Krishnan *(retired Secretary, Government of India), *Rabi Das *(senior journalist based in Bhubaneswar), *Ruth Manorama *(women and dalit rights activist), *Sukumar Muralidharan *(Delhi-based free lance journalist), *Syeeda Hameed *(member of Planning Commission, Government of India), *Vahida Nainar *(expert on international law, mass crimes and gender), Vinod Raina (scientist and social activist with a specific focus on right to education), *Admiral Vishnu Bhagwat *(former Chief of Naval Staff) and *Vrinda Grover *(advocate, Delhi High Court). ** *Introduction * Thousands of *dalits *and *tribals* belonging to the Christian minorities in the Kandhamal region of Orissa were victims of organized violence starting in August 2007. According to government figures during the last bout of violence from August to December 2008, in Kandhamal district alone more than 600 villages were ransacked, 5600 houses were looted and burnt, 54000 people were left homeless, 38 people were murdered. Human rights groups estimate that over 100 people were killed, including women, disabled and aged persons and children; and an unestimated number suffered severe physical injuries and mental trauma. While there are reports of four women being gang-raped, many more victims of sexual assault are believed to have been intimidated into silence. 295 churches and other places of worship, big and small, were destroyed. 13 schools, colleges, and offices of 5 non-profit organizations damaged. About 30,000 people were uprooted and lived in relief camps and continue to be displaced. During this period about 2,000 people belonging to minority communities were forced to repudiate their Christian faith. More than 10,000 children had their education severely disrupted due to displacement and fear. Today, after two years, the situation has not improved, although the administration time and again claims it is peaceful and has returned to normalcy. With a view to create conditions for justice and accountability for the violence, the National Solidarity Forum organized a National People’s Tribunal (NPT) on 22-24 August 2010 at the Constitution Club in Delhi. The objectives of the Tribunal were: 1.To provide a platform for victim-survivors and their families to voice their experiences, perceptions, demands and aspirations to civil society at large; 2.To study and analyse the long-term and short-term causes and impact of the Kandhamal violence; 3.To assess the role, conduct and responsibility of various organizations, groups of individuals or persons, in influencing, precipitating and escalating the violence; 4.To assess the role played by the state and district administration and public officials, including the police, before, during and after the pogrom; 5.To assess the functioning of the criminal justice system for fixing criminal accountability and prosecuting the guilty; 6.To study and analyse the various rights of victims and survivors that have been violated during the violence and thereafter; 7. To recommend both short-term and long-term remedial measures for promoting an efficient delivery of justice and reparations, and for strengthening peace-building, prevention of communal violence and secularism; and 8.To present the findings and recommendations before civil society, including the media, and to persuade the government and other agencies to pursue the necessary follow up action to restore dignity, right to life, justice and peace to the victim-survivors of Kandhamal violence. The Tribunal heard 43 victims, survivors and their representatives, and 15 experts who presented studies / fact-finding reports on the Kandhamal violence. Documentation related to each case, consisting of affidavits, court documents, medical and other supporting documents, as well as copies of reports and studies on the violence were placed before the jury for its perusal. The depositions were on a range of issues

How to make it even healthier? Scientists say just add yogurt. Researchers at the University of Illinois discovered that friendly bacteria in the gut, known as probiotics, work a crucial magic on digesting broccoli, helping to release and absorb sulforaphane into the body. So that broccoli really packs a punch, they suggest feeding the helpful bacteria in your gut with prebiotics, such as fiber, to encourage their proliferation. Another idea is to eat broccoli with probiotics, combining, say, broccoli with a yogurt sauce that contains the hydrolyzing bacteria, said study researcher Michael Miller in a news release on October 22. Broccoli is special in that it is a rich source of sulforaphane, and eating less than one daily serving of broccoli is shown to be enough to have an anti-cancer effect. With many of the other bioactive foods you hear about, vast amounts are required for a measurable outcome, said Elizabeth Jeffery, a University of Illinois professor of human nutrition. Why make a good food even better? Because many people overcook broccoli, which destroys the plant enzyme that gives your body sulforaphane, said Jeffery. Now we know the microbiota in our digestive tract can salvage some of this important cancer-preventive agent even if that happens. Excerpt:- The court heard Robinson continued to be paid up to £800 a month by the Archdiocese of Birmingham until December 2001, despite officials being aware of the allegations. Robinson told the court he had been unable to afford to return to Britain, but the jury later heard that in February 2000 the archdiocese sent him a cheque worth £8,400. Judge Thomas said: The role of the Catholic Church [in the case] is questionable, but it's not for me to judge. Thank you Frederick. I too was hoping that the print media in Goa would remember the Melody King of Goa on his 7th death anniversary. Anyways its still not too late and may something can still be printed. If you need help with content please do let me know and I will assist you. The website is getting more hits this year than last year and as I had mentioned in my interview that I have a quite some content to post and I will be uploading content in parts. It was all over the radio in Goa (Rainbow FM, which is rather popular at mid-day) this afternoon. I would like to believe that your message below was crucial in building awareness about one of our achievers whom we have forgotten. Just before 1.30 pm, the English programme announcer was complaining that she had received too many requests for songs to play. Someone, she said, had rang to point out that it was Alfred's death anniversary, and could she play an English song of his. She couldn't oblige due to lack of time, but pointed this out. Later, when I came back home just before 2 pm, the Konkani programme was still playing one of Alfred's songs. Good going! For those who want to 'meet' Agnelo and know more about his dream, please visit: For the love of a rose http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1BZHh2Z3sU FN Agnelo Fernandes pendown at hotmail.com Dear Readers Tomorrow on the 21st of October 2010 we mark the 7th death anniversary of the one and only Melody King of Goa - Alfred Rose. Although he is not with us today, his golden voice still remains on records, cassettes and CD's for generations to come. Alfred Rose was known as The Man with the Golden Voice (courtesy His Master's Voice Recording Company). As a child when I watched the Tiatr's in Bombay, I can still remember the whistling clapping when people saw him entering the stage. His voice echoed in my ears even after I returned home. Alfred Rose sang thousands of songs and unfortunately nobody has got an exact count. His songs are loved by thousands of fans who are not only in India but also worldwide. His songs always had a special message, be it a slow melody or a fast number. There have been many events organized in his memory such as musical shows talent contests. Tiatr Academy of Goa has sponsored a couple of Alfred Rose musical shows recently. Last year on the occasion of his 6th death anniversary, I had made the www.alfredrose.com website public. There have been more than 2000 hits so far and I have received a lot of emails from fans worldwide thanking me for the website. Unfortunately, the website did not get updated for almost 10 months due to time and certain technical limitations. However, this year on the 21st of October 2010, his fans will see a new face of the website. Photos that have never been seen before. From here on the website will be updated regularly. There will be videos and audio added soon too. Thereafter, a Facebook group was created by one of his fans Augusto Lucas Morais and also administered by our very own Edward Verdes. There are 384 members as of today including Engelbert Rose and Alria Rose. I have been singing only Alfred Rose songs at events for which I have performed so far and many of those who hear me say that I sing / sound like him. I really appreciate the compliments but I only have to say that Alfred Rose will always remain the one and only Melody King of Goa. Please join me in remembering Alfred Rose on his 7th death anniversary please do not forget to visit www.alfredrose.com on 21st October 2010 and experience the new face given to the website. For those of you who would wish to create a family tree http://www.geni.com is a resource which at first sight I would say is absolutely superb. It enables you to collaboratively create a family tree that can be invaluable in property matters etc. I have a feeling that as the site grows more popular one may suddenly find that the owners of the site will decide that it is payback time and those who want to consult it should pay for it. Therefore I think it is a good idea to keep some backup records of what is registered on the site. [Goanet] Science of manipulations( Ivo)
Fr Ivo wrote: Pedophilia is a crime. We cannot say that the Catholic Church is producing abusive priests. There has been a lot of false propaganda, money greed (accusing after 40 years), blown off out of proportion, anytihing being considered to be pedophilia( a hug, a slap, a touch). If there are sick people in all walks of life, they should be properly treated and rehabilitated. It is criminal and means should be taken to tackle this evil. Pedophilia exists not only among some (very few) Catholic priests, but also among Hindu 'bhotts', parents and employers ( to some extent). It is a disease, it is an evil. Response: Dear Fr Ivo, I am glad you accept that paedophilia is a crime. As far as I am aware, no one has accused Catholic church of producing paedophile priests. What people have said is the systematic way the church has tried to thwart the efforts of police authorities to bring these criminals to book. No one is denying that there are paedophiles in all religions. However, other religions do not have as their head a person who is also head of a state and who is also the head of one of the richest institutions in the world. This head who used to be Cardinal Ratzinger has been shown to be advising the priests, bishops and cardinals not to pass on information about paedophile priests to the authorities for the 'greater good of the church'. No Shankaracharya ( spiritual head of Hindus) or any other spiritual head has ever tried to protect paedophiles in this way. There are convicted paedophiles here in the UK who are allowed to remain clergy for years after spending time in jail for their crimes despite Nolan recommendations accepted by Catholic church here in the UK.. This is why it is a problem for the church. Today, a catholic priest who used to be a priest in West Midlands in the UK between 1959 and 1982 was jailed for 21 years for abusing boys between 1959 and 1982. He left UK in 1982 when the first complaint was made and despite host of complaints worked as priest in America until 2001. The judge in this case called the role of the church in delaying his arrest 'questionable'. According to you, the men who complained after twenty odd years against this man were greedy - weren't they? It was their fault, was it not? Look into a mirror father. You really need some guidance. Their are plenty of good priests in Goa. Go and seek guidance from one of them. You really are a dangerous ignoramus. Anil Desai

Adressing a press conference here today Shirodkar stated that, she has filed a complaint to the deputy collector and the returning officer for the election in this regard stating that the news appeared has been totally false and has been published by some elements with a malified intension to cause damage to the good image of her and to create chaos to cause differences between the voters and the undersigned. She has also demanded a detail enquiry into the matter. The copies of the complaint has been forwarded to the State Election Commission, chief minister, opposition leader and Bicholim Police Inspector.

Ward 9 is comprised of Soanr Peth, Pajwada, Bhayar alt and Antil Peth. Mr Gaonkar was elected consecutively for three tenures from ward no 8. But since this ward has been reserved for SC candidate for the first time, Mr Gaonkar had no option but to contest from a ward other than his favourite hunting ground. Mr Gaonkar is a strong supporter of the Bharatiya Janata Party, and a senior local leader who is successful in giving stable BMC for last one decade under his able leadership despite minor differences amongst some members of the ruling group. His rival candidate, Mr Shashikant Naik-Halarnkar is a secondary retired teacher and a senior Congress party worker. He is a resident of Bhutulli Peth-Bicholim and is backed by the Congress party. A tough fight is expected to take place as both candidates have strong support. Ward no- 9 was earlier represented by Ms Usha Kadkade, who would now contest from ward 7, which was represented by Ms Tanuja Rajaram Gaonkar, wife of the chairperson Mr Gaonkar. Ms Gaonkar who has kept herself away from active politics will support vice chairperson Ms Usha Kadkade. Mr Rajan Kadkade ex-councillor of ward 9 whose wife was elected from the ward last time has agreed to support Mr Satish Gaonkar, who would in return support Ms Usha Kdkade in ward 7. This political equation has been worked out by the ruling BJP group. It is interesting to note that the post of chairperson of BMC is reserved for women. So Mr Satish Gaonkar will have to give up his post. However he is interested in electing the BJP group to power. Mr Gaonkar has said that during the last two terms, he has worked towards the development and beautification of the town. The main complexes and development works include new market project which is nearing completion, New KTC bus stand, garbage treatment plant at Lakherem, hot-mixing of roads, construction of gutters, different works under MPLAD fund scheme etc irrespective of whether the area comes under the ward ruled by opposition or fellow councillor. I am fully confident that the voters have full faith in me, Mr Satish Gaonkar opined. The opposition Congress party supported candidate and ex-councillor, Mr Shashikant Naik-Halarnakar, who would give a straight fight to the chairperson of BMC, Mr Gaonkar is a teacher by profession. Mr Naik is also a member of hospital-visiting company and associated with many educational and social organisations. He is much worried of cleanliness, pollution, environment, heath hazard, permanent problems like occurrence of flood, garbage dumped heaps, sorry state of roads and gutters and above all negligent and un-cooperative attitude of government servants who turn a blind eye towards their responsibilities and are apathetic to the difficulties faced by the common men. The prevailing situation is very disturbing. We have to stand up with unity and raise our voice against these bad deeds and residents of the town, keeping party politics apart, should focus on development of the town and progress of the society as a whole, Mr Shashikant Naik-Halarnakar opined.(NT)

[Goanet] Tiatr ‘ Bouquet of Thorns’
Tiatr ‘ Bouquet of Thorns’ Mother should love all her children equally. But in reality, we see some cases where in mother loves daughter more than the son or vice versa. In this case, mother loves her son more than her daughter. Infact, she even hates her daughter. Why? We don’t know that yet.. For the father, it was natural to be more closer to the daughter especially after seeing ill-treatment by the mother. The son is less interested in the family run business than the daughter. Another reason to take sides with the daughter. Daughter come out with flying colours (MBA Exams) but she is sad, no one at home is happy for her (except Dad). Always wondering as to why she is not loved by her mother and brother. Never talks to any one about it but keeps all the feelings to herself. Brother has a girlfriend now (their classmate), a girl with dirty mind. Once she enters the house as daughter-in-law, it was more easier for her to play even more dirty tricks to put her sister-in-law down.. She even had her hand to break the engagement during the party itself. The truth is out now (as expected by many). The ‘daughter’ in the house has been living with her maternal uncle, aunty and the cousin brother as her both parents died in a scooter accident, the child who was just 4 then survived. More trouble, more problems now but the daughter bears it all. Despite all this, the son and the daughter continue to remain all time favourites of the mother. Constant intervention of the daughter in law in the decision making, including demoting the daughter etc the business is now on the verge of collapse but the daughter tries her very best, even when she had nothing to do with the business (after demotion), to save the business and saved the family. Having done everything she could do for the family, including looking after her sick mother etc she finally decides to quit to join her boyfriend whom she loved but never said ‘yes’ all these years. She put up with everything and with everybody for no fault of hers, quietly bearing all the sufferings and pain. Life for her was full of thorns Now leaving home not with flowers but a ‘bouquet of thorns’ KANTTEAMCHO TURO a tiatr by Carmin Vas (St. Michael Teleigao, Socio-Cultural Association) was the 17th entry in the ongoing 36th All Goa Tiatr Competition by Kala Academy. Staged on 21st Oct. 2010 Beautiful story, good acting, good stage set up, good songs and cantos, good music, good lighing etc make this Tiatr my all time favourite so far. (3 more still to go) Depiction of inside of the house as well as the full frontal view (in the end, when the daughter leaves with suitcase etc) deserve full marks for something I have seen for the first time on stage. Flashback scenes too were unusual and are commendable. Party/conference hall/ Dancing scene was bollywood style Father/mother/daughter role well played by Dnyaneshwar Govekar/Gloria D’Souza/Livia D’Silva (e Menezes ?) Daughter-in-law role by Lancy D’Silva was good too. Boyfriend John D’Souza also done well Son being Manuel Dias. Daughter-son when young, played by Shanaya Rodrigues and Dion Fernandes. Besides, there was a cameo role by Custodio Cabral JoeGoaUk’s top prize for acting jointly goes to Livia and Gloria Driver/comedy by Frazier Almeida and housemaid Quincy Pinheiro Comedy was light but good – Tight fit pant skinny driver with mustache was looking funny. As the wedding party run out of food, he brings home a decorative carved watermelon from the buffet table and she steals ‘sanas’ see pic. The tiatr had 13 songs. All beautifully sung by: Cybel Cabral, Aldrin, Custodio Cabral (3), Ezilda (2), Dorothy (2), Stephen, Lancy D’Silva (2), Anjali, Frazel, Evelyn, Quincy (2), Rashmi, Johny Viegas, Gloria D’Souza, Livia D’ Silva, Joaquim Cabral, Bassilio and master Dion Fernandes Quartet by all females –Dorothy, Ezilda, Livia and Lancy on ‘Europi Goemkars’ (NRGs) and their contribution towards Goan economy etc was my favourite. Also, trio by Anjali-Frazel-Evelyn on Plastic/Garbage etc was good and educative. Duet by Custodio and Gloria was good too. Extra: The tiatr was houseful. Despite power failure twice, the tiatr ended just before 9.30pm (30m ahead) Conference hall/party scene was good. Some couples dancing (see Clip) but there was no music. A light music (recorded) in the background would have been nice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-vyopb2DI4 Ok, let see some of the stage pics Will you marry me? FN wrote:- With due respect, and I don't mean this to be personal... but that genteel world could also be called part of a tiny Goan elite, a part of which never got accustomed to the demise of colonialism. RE:I quite like that. I knew of some of that wonderful and genteel folk myself, having lived in Fontainhas in the seventies. Last year I saw one in 'George', near National. He appeared just as he did all those years ago - neatly combed black, sleek hair; full sleeved pin-striped, off-white shirt neatly tucked into the snug fastening of broad leather belt; well polished and pointed black leather shoes. I watched him at his drink, sitting alone at the corner(p'haps reserved?) table from where he could regard the world passing outside by. I had noticed that the waiter brought him his drink without him ordering it when he walked into the bar. 'Orrad' he sat there and drank without hurry, giving an impression of someone who knew how alcohol was to be savoured. He also used his kerchief like no one else in that bar did that evening. Those traits set him apart, apart from the colour of his skin which was ruddy-fair-like Europeans. His stare, uninterruptedly fixed somewhere in the center of the open door frame, was another telling trait. I was drinking with friends but I observed, and as I think of it in response to FN's observation, I surmise that this studied behaviour was designed. It was designed to inspire awe and aloofness. Indeed, he seemed to belong to a by-past era, yet he lived it in the here now, yet a now all his personal present, private and very esoteric, one that was present in his mind alone, to be shared by no one other than himself. [Goanet] THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS HIGH SCHOOLS AND THEIR FOUNDERS – PART 3 (Final)
THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS HIGH SCHOOLS AND THEIR FOUNDERS – PART 3 (Final) Edwin’s daughter, Sybil D’Souza, did her basic education in Panchgini. She returned to Goa in 1941 and continued her studies in SHHS, Parra. She taught at Botelho’s from 1954 to 1960. She fondly recalls the following teachers who taught in the SHJHS, Anjuna during her time: Ms. Ivy Fernandes from Gaumvaddi (late Manuel Xavier’s daughter;) Ms. Zita Dias from Mazalvaddo (late Dr. João Dias’ daughter) - she taught from 1954 to 1975; Ms. Agnes Vales from Vagator; Ms. Angela de Souza from Igreja vaddo (late Aureliano’s daughter;) late Ms. Jessie D’Souza from Voilo Vaddo (late Diogo Antonio’s daughter) – she taught from 1958 to 1994; she started off her teaching career with a monthly salary of Rs.30; Ms. Rose Mendonsa from Mazalvaddo; Ms. Noemia de Souza from Chinvar (Dr. Willie de Souza’s sister – now Sr. Noemia of Nirmala Niketan) and Mr. Saldanha from Assagao. She left Goa for Bombay in June 1960. She could not attend her father’s funeral in November 1960 because we were still under Portuguese rule; it was not easy those days to travel from Bombay to Goa. Sybil continues to live in Mumbai. She is 87 years old (Born: May 10, 1923), and is in good health, just like her first cousin, Phyllis, who is 86 years old (Born April 17, 1924). Edwin’s son, Bernard de Souza, is in Germany. He was born on May 17, 1942. He studied at St. Britto’s, Mapusa. He was tall and thin and always had his hair closely cropped like a crew-cut. He resembled Gandhi, in his appearance and built; he also wore circular-framed spectacles like Gandhi; hence, he was nicknamed ‘Gandhi’ at school and in the village. When the movie ‘Gandhi’ was made, I immediately thought of Bernard; he would have suited Gandhi’s role better than Ben Kingsley! Edwin’s wife, Lucia or Lucy, was very supportive of her son’s migration to Portugal. Bernard was hesitant to leave because there was nobody to look after his mother, who was quite old and frail. But his mother was so nice and considerate that she point blank told him not to worry about her at all. She said her days were numbered and she would pass away any time, but if he missed the opportunity to immigrate to Portugal, he could face an uncertain future. He followed his mother’s wishes and left for Portugal in 1966, from where he later migrated to Germany. Lucy lived in the first bedroom at the front right of the house. She was a pious person. It was obvious from several large statues, over one and a half feet high, which were distinctly arranged in her room, that the whole family was God-fearing. To my knowledge the statues of the following saints were in her room: St. Rita’s - it was the only statue which was enclosed in a glass dome St. Philomena’s - she was not de-canonized then Sacred Heart of Jesus St. Anthony’s Plus many small statues Besides the main oratorio or olotor, the prayer room walls had large pictures mounted on them, about a meter high, of Sacred Heart of Jesus, Sacred Heart of Mary and St. Teresa. In the Sixties and Seventies, whenever a theft was committed or people lost their valuables, they rushed to Lucy’s room to tie St. Anthony’s statue. They kept him tied until the culprit(s) was/were caught or lost items were found. Similarly, we also used a ‘manual’ (prayer book) to catch thieves/wrong doers. The process was simple. A key was placed in the middle of the manual and the manual tied with a strong string. Two persons held the ends of the key on their finger tips. A prayer was recited and names were taken. Surprisingly, whenever a culprit’s name was taken, the manual would turn or rotate. The name was repeated at least three times to confirm the fact. Well, those were the days of faith! After Edwin passed away and Bernard left for abroad, we would visit Lucy sometimes and listen to her sweet talk attentively. She was soft-spoken; she spoke very good English. She lived on a simple diet: For breakfast she had one raw egg and a cup of tea/coffee. For lunch she had a bowl of soup and a little white rice. For dinner, she ate one “poyi” (local bran bread) with a glass of milk. She was the last member of Jacob’s family to live in the house, which was converted into ‘Bougainvillea Hotel - Grandpa’s Inn’ in 1988. She died in ‘Mother Heaven’ Old Age Home in Calangute. In 1931, Fr. Felipe Neri Mendonça, an outstanding educationist and a strict disciplinarian, took over as the Principal of St. Joseph’s High School, Arpora. It was the only school which did not come under Diocesan Society of Education at the time but it was subsequently handed over to the Society. Pre-liberation, Catholic Institutions were universally governed by ‘Concordat’ – An agreement between the Holy See of the Catholic Church and a sovereign state on religious matters. This often included both recognition and privileges for the Catholic Church in a

These and more (see an article by Dr. Nandkumar Kamat some years ago) are due to the legacy the Portuguese have left behind. Also, get rid of the architectural beauties, like the pergolas in the Panjim garden, the Campal garden (Francisco Luis Gomes) and Dona Paula. And while they're about it, let them get rid of the Francisco Luis Gomes statue and the garden as he was a Portuguese too (as were all Goans at the time) and one of the earliest parliamentarians to represent Goa in the Portuguese Cortes. Oh, what about the pedestals on which the Jawan/Kisan are standing on at Miramar (it represents the journey of Afonso de Albuquerque, the statue of whom was taken down), the pedestal in Old Goa which relates odes of Luis de Camoes (the man's statue was taken down), should these not be broken up? That brings me to the edifice built to commemorate Infante D. Henrique, in front of the military hospital - should this be left standing? Also, what about the connection between Old Goa and Panjim - that is the oldest standing and probably the longest causeway in India, built by the Portuguese? Why only rename? Why not go on a rampage a la Fontainhas and break every edifice the Portuguese built and rebuild Goa in the Indian style and make it look more like what they are used to in the form of shanty towns of Delhi and Mumbai? [Goanet] 'STABILITY BUT NO PROGRESS IN BMC'
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM OCT 23: Even as the Bicholim Muncipal Council claims of development and stability in Bicholim the people seem to be unsatisfied with their claims. It may be stated that the main poll propoganda of some of the councillors including the chairman, Satish Gaonkar is the development work and stability given by them. Some of the important projects of the BMC include the Garbage treatment plant, construction of gutters, sanctioning of centre's fund for constrution of the new market, construction of new BMC building, roads and beautification of the city. The BMC could be well considered as one of the stable in the state as it saw only one chairman for almost a decade. Satish Gaonkar got elected from the same ward number -8 and was supported by everyone for the chairman's post. During the last tenure efforts were made by the then transport minister, Pandurang Raut to destabilise the council but if had failed miserably. Satish Gaonkar was still able to retain the chairman's post. During the last tenure he also introduced his wife and with the help of some of the BJP councillors including the Bicholim MLA, Rajesh Patnekar was able to retain the power in the council. Inspite of all these facts the people from Bicholim seem not too happy with the working of the council. Stability does not always mean development and even after 10 years of stability there has been no perfect development taken place in the city Ramesh Gawas a resident and an environmentalist claims adding we could call it self development rather than the development of the city. Gawas who is also an anti-mining activist is not happy with the way the mining issues that were handled by the council. Bicholim is slowly moving into the hands of mining lobby and the council failed to do anything in this regard he said they have entered Lamgao and it is right upto Gaonkarwada but the council failed to keep check on them. He also charged the council for the faulty Regional plan and claimed that it is just an eye wash. The plan demands 15mts road and if this is materialised many houses will have to be razed and the politicians will never go against their voters he stated. Vikas Parab another resident from the city had the same opinion. There is no parking place in the city and on what basis do they claim that they have done a progress Vikas questioned. It may be stated that since last ten years the problem of parking has been very serious. It is felt mostly during the market day and most of them park their vehicles along the main road at the enterence of the market. This further leads to problem for the buses and the other vehicles plying on the road. The BMC does not have any parking place in the city. It may be recalled that during one of the meetings there was a proposal of making the place available under the RTO's office as a parking place but it did not materialise after opposition from the council. It is surprising to note that the BMC even failed to repair the entire stratch of gutters infront of the RTO's office from last several years. Many newspapers highlighted this but all turned nelson's eye over the issue and so it is still laying unattained and stinking. Similar was the case with the market area. There were several projects by the BMC which were unique including the garbage treatment plant but we feel that they neglected the market for almost a decade. There are several problems and the council did not pay attention to them. Nitin Kumbharjuvekar a businessman from the Bicholim market told. Even as the council seem to boast about it's garbage plant there are some who feel that this problem is not solved in the city. The garbage plant has not at all solved the garbage problem in the city and one can see heaps of garbage remaining unattained. Arjun Parab told.

[Goanet] Goanet Initiative introduction to posters # 3 - Charudatt Prabhudesai
Its a Saturday again and a rainy one at that in Goa and its time for me to post another introduction to a Goanet Poster. This time round the die has fallen on an Artist, Thespian, Caricaturist and an Intellectual. Goanet is fortunate to have among its posters people from all walks of life embracing a variety of professions but a man of so many parts is indeed a great catch. Charudatt Prabhudesai comes from a family which has its roots in Goa's Southernmost Taluka, Canacona. Charudutt (Charu to his friends, and seeing as Goanet is a family linked by the invisible bond of love for Mother Goa, one can, I suppose call him Charu and be forgiven) was born in Panjim and did his schooling in one of Panjim's famous schools, The People's High School which was founded by Late Mr. J. M. Surlikar - himself an institution in Goan Educational Circles. Charu did his BFA at Goa College of Art The Goa College of Art, Miramar, under the tutelage of D. Harihar and Padmashree Prof. Lakshman Pai and Sri K. Vishwambhara. Charu's lament is the fact that though he averaged a 6.5 in Internal Assessment and though he was the best student for the years 1982 to 1985, he was not awarded a first class nor was he awarded a fellowship, though he won a few prizes. However, he succeeded in getting a small grant from the Kala Academy in Goa to enable him to study further and acquire a MFA through Maharaja Sayajirao University(MSU), Baroda. MSU of 1980s was a hub of art activity. He was fortunate to work with great professors like Ghulam Mohammed Sheikh, Dr. Ratan Parimoo, Prof. Deepak Kanal and the like. Late Bhupen Khakkar was actively interacting with students of painting then. During this time he participated in the National Art exhibition, New Delhi, 1986, where both his entries were put on view. During his Baroda years he got more absorbed in the Sri Aurobindonian thought and in 1990 moved down south to the Sri Aurobindo ashram. He was there for 8 years. The purlieu of the ashram was perhaps a step that led him to make Auroville ( http://www.auroville.org) his home, and in 1998 he joined the international township, just 11 km from Pondicherry. Charu is an artist by profession and an actor. In Charu's own words, I had always done theater - in Goa, in Baroda, and in Auroville. I have acted in many plays, including Shakespeare's ( Hamlet The Tempest), Tagore's Sacrifice, Molière's 'Tartouffe' and Sri Aurobindo's play 'Purseus'. Recently worked in comedia de l'arte('King Stag'), Peter Shaffer's 'black comedy. I am also a caricaturist and I have illustrated childrens' stories. Some of my work was animated by* bookbox.com* Primarily I am a Goan painter. I live in Auroville with Paula Caesar and our son Mir Maulik Caesar Prabhudesai. I write a blog called 'foggy impressions of things' @ charudattap.blogspot.com Ladies and Gentlemen of Goanet, it is a pleasure to have in our midst Mr. Charudatt Prabhudesai. Let us welcome him with applause. -- Tony de Sa. tonydesa at gmail dot com ^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v
[Goanet] Goa: The Cruellest Inquisition
Gabriel de Figueiredo Why dig out only the Portuguese? Perhaps comparative history would be better - how many people were subject to torture in England in the same period, and how many people were tortured in India by the Brits in a similar period for political and religious reasons? --- GL responds: As I was writing my last response to this thread, I read the posts about the practice of medicine by medical quacks - aka non-certified physicians. Today likely in Goa and India; but definitely in UK, Australia, USA, etc medical quacks are barred and even subject to criminal prosecutions because of the risk of killing patients. Medical quacks are certainly condemned on Goanet. Yet similar efforts in 16th, 17th, 18th century in colonial Goa against non-certified doctors a.k.a. vaidya (Hindu), hakim (Muslim) are called the abuses of Inquisition. Given the economic advancement of colonial Goa, it was an attractive place for anyone seeking to improve their socio-economic status. The govt action of colonial Goa is condemned, by the same people, who rightly condemn the current medical practices of non-certified medical practitioners. I find this hypocrisy and / or ignorance amusing. I am not claiming that 'certified physicians' of the 16th, 17th, 18th century were practicing 'evidence based medicine' and were always curing patients. All I am claiming is the desire to license physicians in the 20th and 21st century was as significant and important as in the 16th, 17th, 18th century in colonial Goa. Regards, GL
