Re: [Goanet] Who is Soter Barreto?
On 9 December 2010 05:22, Sebastian Borges s_m_bor...@yahoo.com wrote: Dear friends, Augusto's post makes it obvious that, despite belonging to the Goan Catholic community, he does not read Konkani in the Roman script; and he is certainly not an exception! Also, why give Augusto a complex about belonging to the Goan Catholic community [and]... not read[ing] Konkani in the Roman script? We are great at excluding people, labelling them and even stereotyping. I would see this as a half-full glass kind of issue and instead say: Augusto's post makes it obvious that he is trying to appreciate writings in Konkani, is immensely skilled at translations, and that such individuals have great roles to play as bridge-builders. My only complaint against Augusto is that he doesn't do enough translations, and wastes a lot of his talent :-) He will one day have to answer to his maker for this :-) As far as Prof Borges goes, I have nothing personal against him, appreciate his work on the language issue, but feel that we all need to see this all as more than a zero-sum game, not just a you-lose-if-I-win scenario. I've met Prof Borges in real-life, and he's a fine, softspoken gentleman (with a long white beard) with whom it is difficult to disagree or fight. At least that's my experience... [Goanet] GBA's history rewrite - FAIL
To Goanet - The laughable gaggle that now hangs for dear life and goes by the name Goa Bachao Abhiyan (GBA) is trying hard for a rewrite of history. Alas, for these hacktivists, accidental and otherwise, the internet has a memory that is impossible to erase. GBA - 3 years of deceit (Part 1/2) - http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-December/187272.html GBA - 3 years of deceit (Part 2/2) - http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-December/187386.html So where do we stand today? The future looks very bleak for Goa. The opening created by the Dec 18, 2006 rally at Azad Maidan was the one - and ONLY - opportunity Goans had to stanch the bleeding and arrest, perhaps even reverse, the decay. I recall how nervous the builders and the real estate mafia were at the time. But the poison had been pre-administered. Some of the GBA hacktivists were already compromised, and their plan was to make sure that the politicos, builders, and miners would eventually win the day. And so they did. Then Digu was installed as CM - that is when the order was placed for Goa's coffin. The hacktivists meanwhile continued to pretend they were fighting on behalf of Goans with the help of migrant ex-editors and others. The only conduit where you got to hear what these nefarious punters were up to was Goanet (and for that we must thank Bosco for allowing uncomfortable facts to get through without distortion). Now we have to live with the sorry place that Goa has become. Digu told Goans some months ago that he no longer needs Goan votes. That is the only time he has spoken the truth and nothing but the truth. For there are now enough ghatis and the Bantwal-Ghantwal types to override Goan votes (slight exaggeration, true, but not for long). As for how bad it will get, let me make this observation. There are no lower bounds to how stinky things can get in India. Eg. Mumbai, which if you think about it, is really a toilet in which n million (where n keeps growing by the month) draw breath. This is a statement of fact, not a put-down, for these are human beings all aspiring to a better life. Once a great city, now a pity. The next generations of Goans will grow up with a renormalized vision of Goa. What my generation today finds appalling about Panjim, for instance, will be the new normal for the generation that came in, Excrement, trash, malls men will spend time cheek-by-jowl (like they do most everywhere in India) and no Goan born after 2000 will think the worse of it. He or she will not have seen anything better. We mucked up in 1961 by giving the fort away to the Indians with NOTHING in return. Now come the consequences. So - what is D. D'Cruz (the go-to-Goan-if-you-want-bozo-interviews) going to say the next time Burqa comes for her next media shagathon on a lamani-owned beach? Regards, r

Indeed yes, Gabriel, RSS; Godse; Congress; BJP, SS et al are the same when it comes to rationalizing, looting, plundering and perpetuating the caste divide. Never thought of it that way i.e. that it was a bigger game plan to get rid of MK. I am happy that I have never recognized any of these a***s as role models except MK Gandhi. And I shall always look up to him as a GOAN, who had no connection with India. Remember, I am a pre-India- Independent Baby. Eddie, I've heard about the Goa bag, but only from Bomboicars. If I'm not mistaken, it's the black, plasticy bag that is available at the Mapusa market, and probably at other places. Being in Goa myself, I've not thought of this as a Goa bag for obvious reasons :-) Question: do you know how and when this name originated, or when it was first used? Intrigued... [Goanet] SMILE............................ IT'S WEEKEND (09/12/2010)
ONLY HAS In Australia, CID officer (Walter) was interrogating 3 Indians (Ramu from Gujarat, Sakaram from Maharashtra and Xaverito from Goa) who were training to become detectives. To test their skills in recognizing a suspect, Walter shows Ramu a picture for 5 seconds, then hides it and says:- Walter: This is your suspect, how would you recognize him? Ramu: That's easy; we'll catch him fast because he only has one eye! Walter: Well...uh...that's because the picture shows his profile. Slightly flustered by this ridiculous response, Walter flashes the picture for 5 seconds at Sakaram and asks him: Walter: This is your suspect, how would you recognize him? Sakaram: He'd be too easy to catch because he only has one ear! Walter: (angrily responds) what's the matter with you? Of course only one eye and one ear are SHOWING because it's a picture of his profile! Is that the best answer you can come up with? Extremely frustrated at this point, Walter shows the picture to Xaverito and in a very testy voice asks: Walter: This is your suspect, how would you recognize him? Think hard before giving me a stupid answer. Xaverito: (Looks at the picture intently for a moment) H . . . The suspect wears contact lenses! Walter is surprised and speechless because he really doesn't know himself if the suspect wears contacts or not. Walter: Well, that's an interesting answer . . . Wait here for a few minutes while I check his file and I'll get back to you on that. Walter leaves the room and goes to his office, checks the suspect's file in his computer, and comes back with a beaming smile on his face. Walter: Wow! I can't believe it...it's TRUE! The suspect does in fact wear contact lenses. Good work! How were you able to make such an astute observation? Xaverito: Well, he can't wear regular glasses because he only has one eye and one ear. Re: [Goanet] anti-Portuguese resolution passed
FN, the kaxtti/kashtti was not only worn in a work situation but also otherwise. Even the bhattkars wore a coat and a kashtti instead of a pant. Here is an excerpt from my article “Olden-Days Clothing in Goa – Kashtti - Part I ,” which was posted on Goanet on September 3, 2007: “Loin-cloth-wearing peoples considered the loin-cloth an expression of modesty, but when Europeans conquered societies among whom the loin-cloth was traditional, they banned this garment as uncivilized and offensive to the Christian morality they usually preached. The Portuguese did not ban the loin-cloth in Goa but neither did they encourage visitors dressed in kashtti in their headquarters in Panjim. Therefore, whenever elite bhattkars visited Panjim, they alighted from their palanquins outside Panjim’s main entry points, which were either at “chear khambeanim” (at the four pillars), if one came from the islands/East, or in “Calafura” (Santa Cruz), if one came from the South, or in Betim before one crossed the Mandovi river by a “ponev” (canoe), if one came from Bardez, and put on his western clothes. Goan publications and their editors were forced to close shop in the 50's in Bombaim. Goans were forced to give up their Portuguese citizenship if they were to continue living there. Members of my family were jailed for many days by the evil Nehru for singing in Portuguese at a party and forced to leave Bombaim. BC I hope you can also give a blow-by-blow account of how Roldao was beaten up by the Bombay police and the method of his escape from Bombay to Goa, with his family. Perhaps you could also read about how Goans in Bombay, who resisted the Indian moves to change their attitude towards the Portuguese, were treated, e.g. editors of some prominent Goan publications.

Of special interest to South Asian groups - a short film about India: Saturday, Dec 11 2010 at 7:15PM *Kids of the Majestic Director: *Dylan Verrechia Every day, a sea of passengers floods the Majestic Railway Station of Bangalore City. Beneath the commotion of commuters, a group of orphans live beneath the station, collecting the trash that the passengers have left behind. 'Kids of the Majestic' is a documentary by filmmaker Dylan Verrechia and Dr. Suhas Radhakrishna that follows a group of such orphans: Rafik, a smiling young drug addict; Mental Manja, nicknamed 'mental' because he didn't speak until he was 10; Arun-Badur, the artist and the writer; Baba, who at 8 has travelled throughout India alone; and Joti, mother-to-be at 16, who was abused at 9. The filmmakers befriended these children who, uneasily and slowly, opened up to them, sharing their life stories as no one before has ever heard. Re: [Goanet] I Am Questioned By The Dreaded Agente Monteiro
Thank you Gabriel, those are excellent points for discussion. It would be really nice if we could get the entire episodes regarding Roldao and the difficulties of the Goans in Bombay who were even forced to change their names to succeed in life and to erase their similarities with Portuguese names. It shows what kind of Democratic country the Indian Union was in the post 1947 - 1970 years... And then some of us claim that India got democracy much before Goa, that it was good, that there was freedom of speech, etc, etc. Yeah. Right! All in paper, of course. There is no full freedom of speech in India even today. There are publications and books that are still banned in India today and you can get arrested if caught with a banned book. There are politicians in Goa being arrested and people prevented from exercising their rights to do public demonstrations, etc. That is the democracy in India today. And it is much better today. In the first few years after 1961, it was exactly the same as during Portuguese times, or worse. Goa even had a one entire year of Martial Law post 1961. What an excellent way of welcoming Goa into the motherland. It is all about the gigantic loot off the land, wheeling dealing in real estate in and around north Goa. There will be crores of rupees to be made by those who have lapped up land in Pernem and in Sindhudurg district. And the ones who have lapped up land in Pernem and surrounds are close associates of some of the most corrupt and influential politicos in Goa, Maharashtra and Delhi, and other wealthy Indians. [Goanet] Boycott Goa Liberation Celebrations
I request Goans to do a little research and find out the facts of what actually happened in 1961. Was Goa liberated or invaded or a conquest? Why were promises made to preserve Goa's Identity? And worse still, why were these promises not honoured to date? Were we not fooled and brainwashed into believing that we were were liberated, and today like ignorants, we celebrate Goa's Liberation Day ? Does the Supreme Court not acknowledge that Goa was a conquest/invaded? Why are our Freedom Fighters not demanding safeguards today via Special Status and other means to preserve Goa's Identity. Goans, it is high time we address all the brain washing that has been happening for all these years. We must boycott the farce liberation celebrations and immediately DEMAND what is rightfully ours i.e. Measures to protect our land, environment, demographics, language, culture identity. Re: [Goanet] COLUMN: Who Changed our Regional Plan?
The Goa government does not operate on emotions, but it exploits emotions when needed. Governance is not about creative writing and TV soaps though governance can inspire such writings and TV serials. The government is guided by the letter of the law. So, who changed whose Regional Plan? The RP in Goa is the product of the Goa Town and Country Planning Act of 1975. The Chief Town Planner is responsible to prepare a RP every 10 years and present it to the government. So, what do we mean when we say ' who changed our RP'? The CTP has all authority to revise the draft RP after inviting comments from the public. So, what do we mean by the final RP2021 has deviated from the draft RP-2021'? The law does not state about the need to invite further comments if any modifications get incorporated once the comments have already been invited from the public by the CTP. So, what is this talk about putting the final RP-2021 out for public scrutiny before notification? Someone seems to be taking everyone for a ride. Someone is playing to the galleries and exploiting the emotions of the goan people. Accusations of contradictions in any statutory process needs to be backed up by relevant citations from the laws. Statutory processes cannot be left to demands based on fiction of the imagination of creative writers and accidental activists. Let us stop bull shitting and admit that the activists have lost the case for the people, and that the gullible goan is equally responsible for allowing this to happen even despite repeated warnings. What we now see is just noise for the sake of noise. At the most when options run out the matter will be conveniently dumped in court and rendered sub-judice. The gullible public will be kept anticipating a favourable court verdict and activists will always point to the courts and claim that they can do nothing more. That would be the end of yet another story of negligence and deceit from liberated Goa by 'hacktivists' to the benefit of real estate and mining industry in Goa. Just add an 'h' to 'Save Goa' and it becomes 'Shave Goa'. Together we can definitely acheive more by ensuring that all the eggs are secured in one basket making it easier for hactivists to control opinion in favour of real estate and mining intetrests. Unity of goans assures control but division makes the propsects of hacktivists a little uncertain. The question every goan must ask is - who were these mid-wives that facilitated the delivery of such a treacherous RP-2021 once again? Even the draft RP-2021 was definitely not our RP. -Soter
[Goanet] I Fled From Tyranny - A Bombay Goan in 1956
This is an abridged chapter from a Goan who was disillusioned with the newly independent Indian nation. QUOTE Ever since India's covetous designs on Goa were made manifest I had know that the only way the Goans could retain Goa for themselves was for them to return to their motherland. I had been preaching to my fellow countrymen in Bombay that we should sacrifice what we had in India to retain what we have in Goa - a spiritual and cultural legacy besides our homes and our lands enriched by the sweat and dust of our ancestors. I had more than the average Goan has in India. I had position and income. I had a home and property worth more than a hundred thousand rupees. I also had children whose education and future was bound up with India as that of any other Goan family residing there. I did not advise them to do anything which I was not prepared to do myself. It was a story of frustration and flight. Frustration came to me from disillusionment. And disillusionment comes to those who build their hopes on things as they might be, instead of things as they are. My illusions were the hopes on which was reared. My tender years were spent in Bombay. From the age of ten I was nurtured with nationalistic ideas. My maternal aunt was a born politician and she was perhaps one of the first persons of Goan origin to become a member of the Indian National Congress. She was rich and adopted my brother and myself into her household, as also many other nephews. She made us wear khadi and the white cap as early as 1918. I well remember those hectic days. There were mass meetings, mile-long processions, lathi charges, police raids and secret purchase and sale of Congress bulletins. Peter Alvares, who later was to be the arch conspirator against Goa, was with me at school. We lived alongside each other and were in fact great friends. We also came from the same village in Goa and it is surprising how the same village could have bred, if I may so put it, the poison and the antidote so near each other. The last time I met Peter Alvares was when I was a well-fed servant of the Government of India and he a hungry socialist. We differed violently in political matters, but somehow managed to remain friends. Reared in this atmosphere, and my working life having brought me into contact with British snobbery, I became a rebel. Fortunately my rebellion was not against individuals or a race. I rebelled against injustice in the abstract, and it did not matter who was the perpetrator. I was natural therefore that the great rebels of the age would become my heroes. There was idealism in their rebellion; at least there was in Mahatma Gandhi and I expected his followers, particularly Pundit Nehru, to have the same idealism and the same honesty. Nehru was a hero to me and at the time I believed her was motivated by the highest ideals. Destiny however intended that I should take a closer look at him, and in time, made me a worm in the Mountbatten organism. Worms have a great advantage when they look up at the world stage and at the actors thereon - no one notices a worm and therefore no attempt is made to hide from the worm those things that are hidden from more conspicuous eyes. I looked up in the faces of men, heard their whispers compared notes with other worms and came to my own conclusions. If the walls of the Viceregal Lodge had ears, they would compile a history very different from that of the official historian. There were Lord Mountbatten, Mahatma Gandhi, Jinnah, Nehru, Vallabhai, Liaquat, Sarojini and hundreds of others, strutting, drifting, hurrying and scurrying down the corridors, each bearing the impress of his own mental worries. I was there in the Marble Hall, when Lord Mountbatten proclaimed the surrender of India to the Congress by swearing his loyalty to India as her first Governor-General. I was in Delhi and in Simla when hatred broke loose and killed a half million men, women and children with a savagery the world has never seen or heard of. Then came the events in Kashmir, Junagadh, Hyderabad and finally the murder of the Mahatma by Brahmin intrigue. I was privileged to weep and pay my last homage to the one and only man who could prevent the tyranny of the oligarchy that rules the Indian Union today. It was said that said that Godse's was the only finger that pulled the trigger. Who knows whose was the body or which the brain that planned the murder? The death of Shyam Prasad Mukherjee had also started doubts in many minds. The lack of scruple displayed in the matter, as in the case of Goa, has made me suspect that not all the Mahatma's murderers have been brought to book. ONE THING IS CERTAIN AND IT IS THAT THE MAHATMA WOULD NEVER COUNTENANCE THE MEANS EMPLOYED BY NEHRU AND HIS COTERIE TO SUBDUE THE GOANS TO HIS WILL. My disillusionment however did not come until India had settled down after the birth pangs of independence. It is said that a single straw may show the way the wind blows and my
[Goanet] I Am Questioned By The Dreaded Agente Monteiro
Great way to shift the topic of this thread away from Agente Monteiro and those who shielded him. Great strategy to ignore the victims of Agente Monetiro and the indigenous ruling eltie in Goa in the last days of the Portuguese colonial regime. Regards, GL Paulo Colaco Dias wrote: Thank you Gabriel, those are excellent points for discussion. It would be really nice if we could get the entire episodes regarding Roldao and the difficulties of the Goans in Bombay who were even forced to change their names to succeed in life and to erase their similarities with Portuguese names. --- Gabriel de Figueiredo wrote: I hope you can also give a blow-by-blow account of how Roldao was beaten up by the Bombay police and the method of his escape from Bombay to Goa, with his family. Perhaps you could also read about how Goans in Bombay, who resisted the Indian moves to change their attitude towards the Portuguese, were treated, e.g. editors of some prominent Goan publications.
