A booklet “Misdeeds of Advocate General Subodh Kantak” will be released on
December 19th the 50th Anniversary of Goa’s Liberation.

The booklet would be a documented account with all evidence on the glaring
misdeeds and irregularities committed by Advocate General of Goa Mr. Subodh
Kantak.

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat would be requested that in public interest
the booklet be printed at the Government printing press and be distributed
by the Department of Information through all the Municipalities and
Panchayats to every house free of cost. The booklet would also be available
on a website so that it could be accessed and read by Goans living across
India and abroad.

The Subodh Kantak saga is a very dark chapter in the 50 years of Goa’s
Liberation. One of the few achievements of the Digambar Kamat government
was that it has been able to shield and protect the illegalities committed
by India’s highest paid Advocate General Mr. Subodh Kantak.

Inspite of Chief Minister Digambar Kamat’s repeated assurances that the
Advocate General’s fees would be slashed and brought on par with the AG’s
of Maharastra, Karnataka and Gujarat, the Chief Minister had taken no
action and allowed Mr. Subodh Kantak to recklessly bleed the State
exchequer making him India’s highest paid Advocate General.

Due to the unsound politically tainted legal advice being given to the
Government by the Advocate General, almost every decision taken by this
government has landed up being challenged before the Courts with most of
them already quashed and set aside.

Mr. Subodh Kantak instead of upholding the dignity and self-respect of the
high constitutional post has tarnished the image and sanctity of the post
by not maintaining the required high standards of professional ethics and
decorum.

EVE TEASING COSEQUENCES
It is very said and tragic that two younsters lost their lives in the prime
of their youth They were out at Amboli Restaurant at Andheri with their
girl companions Some boys starting teasing their girls and naturally the
boys objected to this behaviour. in defence Some verbal altercations
followed Taking it seriously the eve teasers returned with dangerous
weapons and brutally atacked them MR Keenan and Reuben lost their lives in
defending their companions, There were crowds who were mere spectators to
this sordid drama of brutality and not one raised their voice or acted to
support them. The argument that they wree armed with dangerous weapons is
to show lack of concern for the others to avoid involvelment and selfish
interests. The waiters and hotel staff also remained non commital and
allowed the perpatros to attack mercilessly to death the two youngsters
There is no deterent law against eve teasing It happens in many a lawless
states in the North like Bihar etc Mumbai by and large has been free of
this scourge, but times appear to be changing The police nabbed them
immediately, but the action is awaited, so that such incidents are not
repeated People must be free to move in the city without such personal,
verbal attacks on their dignity and freedom There is an outcry all over
India and rightly so and they have voluntered to help in any way they can.
we need to force the law makers to seriously bring out regulations and not
be satisfied with mere asuarances
The symphaties are with the parents, who have displayed utmost restraint in
the midst of unbearable grief. They seek justice and not revenge in the
midst of personal loss and tragedy and all they want is legal actions to
prevent such incidents in the near future The agony and trauma to the
parents, family, relatives and friends can be thus avoided
While the memories of such ghastly incidents are short lived and life
continues as normal for the rest of us
What is awaited and expectedwith hope is the legal actions against these
misguided youths, exemplary punishment and without any politcal
interference. This incident should open up mdebate on stringent laws on eve
teasing so that our girls and sisiters are protected against this nuisance
In the mean time the precious lives of Keenan and Reuben must usher in law
that will serve as deterent all over India

EXtradition of Julian Assange
The Judiciary in England has turned down his request not to be extradited
to Sweeden He has limited time to appeal His friends are apprehensive that
this my facilitate his extradition to USA becuase of warm and friendly
re;lations between two countries It is adduced that sweeden is not a court
of Kangroo justice. It is argued that Julian defend himself against the
muck of rape and molestation He has no alternative to face boldly and
legally defend himself in Sweeden. It is tre thta rape charges were never
pursued sincerely, when Julian was resident in that country for over 6
months In Sweeden Rape is a serious charge to be overlooked lihgtly. What
lends credence to the fact of vendeta and vindictiveness is that these
charges have surfaced with a lot of adverse publicity, after the disclosure
of Wikileaks The judgement in England cannot be termed as biased per se,
but the appeal will finally seal his fate
The prosecution, if at all inSweeden with will be watched with great
interest and analysed minutely , so that there is no miscarriage of justice
and it is not a ploy to get even
Julian by his leaks have antogonised many countries and caused upheavals of
great embarassments He may not be counted as a serious journalists, but
cannot at the same time be labeled as espionage agent He has caused tremors
by his disclosures , which may not be classified material But the
diplomatic cables potray the arrogance of some countries in beliitling
Nations, by their casual communications and comments. He is strangulated by
a cartel of supporters acting in unison to cut his life line of fund Julian
Assange will always be remebered for breaking virgin grounds on
secret, diplomatic cables When even harmless information is kept secret and
out of bounds, the urge and curiosity to to be excited by such disclosure
is only natural exciting
The leaks show how these cables ridicule sovereign Nations and embarass

The report about a bunch of priests and nuns meeting L K Advani is a 'disgrace'
to the Catholic Church, to use a milder term. While the catholic community in
Goa is a victim of several discriminatory policies supported by BJP, we have a
bunch of priests and nuns appealing for more seats to minorities by BJP and
cursing the Congress.
Seems to be that the jesuit priest is a habitual publicity seeking entity. The
last time he met the BJP leader a couple of years ago, when confronted he
explained that he was seduced into it by a Porvorim based christian agent of
the BJP. But an act committed the second time confirms exactly the opposite.
This time it is an act committed with free will.
Do catholics in Goa need to beg for seats from Advani who claims to have been
an alumini of St. Patrick's school but has been part of the political tirade
against the minorities in this country?

Editor of Goan Observer Mr. Rajan Narayan has done his readers a big favor by
reprinting (as part of his 'Countdown to Liberation Series) the very objective
and detailed report of independent American journalist Homer A. Jack, on the
attempt by unarmed 'satyagrahis', to enter Goa soon after the 'liberation of
Dadra Nagar Haveli' in 1955.

. The article first appeared in the Issue of Hindustan Times, Delhi dated
August 19, 1955. It would be nice if that piece could get wide circulation; not
because there is need to raise new or renewed feelings of bitterness about the
past, but because those who fail to know the real facts of their history may be
condemned to repeat it. Homer Jack's report is very detailed since he was
present for the Press Briefing given in Panjim at ten o'clock evening when
things were deemed finished and the 'satyagrahis' 'routed'.

Perhaps, unknown to me, there is a tangible memorial to one Panna Lal Yadav, so
beautifully memorialized by Journalist Jack in the main body of his story (at
least thirteen of them died) and in his closing sentence, And I shall never
forget the supreme sacrifice of Panna Lal Yadav and how, so silently, so
determinedly, so wonderfully calm his comrades sat around his body on the stone
floor of the ancient Hindu temple. Azad Goa! Jai Hind!

My emotional response to those enormaties of the historical past---the
killings, the tortures, the stupidities and horrors of it all---derives from
attempts to fathom the thinking of Jesuit scientist/philosopher Pierre Teilhard
de Chardin; the whole cosmic reality is 'all of a piece', and in a constant
state of 'becoming'---and WE are its leading shoot. As WE go, so goes the whole
cosmic future. What to do (?), except forgive the 'sins of our fathers' and
pray for our own deliverance, in the hope that the historical evil, like
bio-compost (just plain 'manure') can serve as the growth-medium for a new
spiritual and psychic flowering.

In Goa hundreds of Masses are read every day for the 'departed souls'---that
'they may be loosed from their sins'. Perhaps every year, on one of those
commemorations of newfound social political 'freedom', we should flock to our
churches, mosques and temples to beseech our 'GODS'---to grant FORGIVENESS to
those who, mostly unwittingly, were 'oppressors of the past'---Father, forgive
them; for they know not what they do.

Gabe,
Thanks for this report which had two bits of info for me:
1) I did not realise that Lloyds was a govt run bank. I will have to avoid it
as experience has taught me that when politicians appoint people to run govt
owned businesses, they chose their friends rather than the most qualified
person for the lob. As a result, these businesses usually fail.

2) I had to wonder if the above article is 'paid news'  ala Mayabhushan. Maybe
the 1% are on an aggressive public relations mode to justify to the 99% how
well they deserve their obscene salaries.  As far as stress tests are
concerned, how about this one from today's, The Globe and Mail, Toronto?

Mom is a multitasker
“A Scottish woman who took her driving exam while in labour said she passed the
test and drove herself to the hospital to give birth,” reports United Press
International. “Emma French, 20, of Livingston said her water broke about 4
a.m. on Aug. 30 and she decided to take the 8:40 a.m. driving exam when the
baby did not immediately come, The Mirror reported Tuesday. ‘Everyone was
telling me to go to the hospital, but I had waited so long for my driving test,
I was determined to do it,’ Ms. French said. [She] said she kept her
contractions, which were about 10 minutes apart, a secret from the examiner and
drove herself to the hospital after passing the test.”

Bombay has being ripped of all its flesh and has been reduced to a skeleton
due to the broad-day light destruction of bombays ecology, environment,
openspaces, mangroves, saltpanlands, etc by the builders – slumlords -
politicians – landmafia - bureaucracy – collectorsoffice - police –
rationoffice – bmc – mhada - mmrda……..no past/present/future bishops
appointed by vatican for bombay has dared to speakup against the people who
are destroying bombay……..an old joke that goes something like this: When a
new bishop is elected, he immediately undergoes surgery to remove his
spine.

MMRDA was given land in the past for setting up public utilities, gardens,
etc in bombay but MMRDA is selling away the land for residential purpose.
The recent news is of MMRDA selling 115 acres of land in Wadala for
Rs.5/- crore to the builders lobby. In the past MMRDA has also sold
vacant lands in its possession to builders lobby. Can anyone stop MMRDA
from destroying bombay ?

Politicians who are in construction business or directly/indirectly
associated with builderslobby should be disqualified from contesting
elections in bombay…..…..politicians who are elected in some other
constituency of Maharashtra should not be allowed to take decisions for
Bombay……….politicians who have not disclosed their sources of income
election funds should be disqualified from contesting elections in
bombay……..all decisions taken for bombay in BMC Committees Maharashtra
Legislative Assembly should be approved by citizen – civic – rti – ecology
– environmental activists……..municipal elections in bombay should be held
every 2.5 years and not 5 years………can the Indian Government pass such
special election laws for Bombay

The BMC had some years back passed a rule that no new building will get NOC
if the building does not have water harvesting system but that rule is only
on paper……The BMC had also passed a rule that new buildings will get bmc
water connections only when the middle vaitarna project is complete but
that rule is also on paper………there is also a rule that a building should
have around it adequate space for a fire brigade vehicle to move freely but
this rule is also violated………there are 30 different permissions to be taken
before a builder can commence the construction of his buildings and to
bypass all permissions, rules, laws the builder pumps in cash
everywhere………..the ruling party politicians in govt bmc also ensure
builders get more Floor space index FSI TDR relaxation in CRZ exploitation
of openspaces mangroves saltpanlands, etc in return for election funds,
free flats, luxury cars, etc etc etc……….it appears that all people in power
position have sold their hearts minds body soul to the builders
lobby.with more and more new buildings slums coming up everywhere
expect more and more shortage of water, public transport, public utilities,
etc etc etc.

The Catholic Clergy in Bombay programmed the lay catholics to remain
non-combative, non-ambitious, non-aggressive, susegaad, dormant, alcoholic
politically inactive……….this explains why catholics in bombay are…not in
a position to politically agitate for their rights……….not in a position to
influence the policies of the maharasthra govt., bmc, mmrda……not in
position to revolt against those parish priests who are misusing church
funds illegally selling away vacant church properties refusing
admission to children of poor catholics in parish schools…….not in a
position to protect the last few bits of openspaces, mangroves,
saltpanlandsnot in a position to revolt against Bollywood which
stereotypes catholics as drunkards loose characters……not in a position to
aggressively apply for Government jobs – Bank jobs - police jobs –
armedforces jobs etc……not in a position to work towards becoming IAS/IPS
officers…….etc etc etc.

CHRISTIANS ARE BEING HARASSED IN MANY PARTS OF INDIA BECAUSE THE ENEMY
KNOWS CHRISTIANS WILL NOT RETALIATE WITH A VENGENANCE……….a vast majority of
christians in India are poor but instead of serving poor christians the
Christian missionaries are using their foreign funds to serve poor
non-christians….WHAT A SHAME.

In call centers the Hindus have to temporarily adopt for their 8 hour shift
a Christian name or American type name in order to conceal the Indian
nationality. Similarly there are around 20% Christians in India who have
been baptized with Hindu names in order to conceal their Christian
identity. Some Christians believe that a Hindu name will benefit their
childrens career

To all Other Law educated True Goans of all over the world,
You'll know the truth about illegal annexation of Goa in 1961 and Yet Being
educated in law have choosen to remain silence for so long ?!! . I am still at
loss to understand why a educated person with degrees in Law would remain
silent to this illegal Unlawfull acts of Indian Govt, when all indian Govt
wanted was to make  Goa  as a Colony for its uncontrolled evil population ,
loot and destroy goa from the face of the earth slowly as years goes by.
But the question is :- Are these Law educated Goans are  real Patriotic Goans
with Noble heart or are they born cowards ?!!!
Any way i request to  join us .or atleast do something about it to raise
the issue of Illegal annexation since you all are a Capable and got duty
towards True God and True Goa .
Than perhaps  Your name( like Dr Jack Sequire) will shine forever on this earth
or at least in Goan History even after death for standing up against mighty
Evil India as King David stood against Goliath( 1 samuel
40-54) trusting in True Gods Help in the end .to defeat the
mighty Goliath , which most Israelites thought was
IMPOSSIBLE..not knowing that with God all things are
possible when a willing heart is ready to stand for the truth without fear and
Complete trust in True living God.
In true living God  we trust  and in his Holy Name( Jesus Christ) we put our
Hope [ Matthew 12:21]..that we true Goans will be helped by Gods choosen
people and nations.. to be independent Country.
Kind regards,

NON RESIDENT GOANS EXPECT ACTION NOT MORE CONVENTIONS

We all know the issues that concern our fellow Goans living in other states
across India and overseas. Over the years there have been so many Goan
Conventions that have deliberated thread bare issues concerning Goa and
related to Non-Resident Goans. There has been enough of talking and posturing.
What we now need is some action on the part of the government to redress the
concerns and grievances of Goans living outside Goa.

After years of service outside Goa or abroad many Non Resident Goans (NRG)
long to settle in the land of their birth. But for many reasons they get
disheartened and give up. Many Goans feel the urge to contribute towards
shaping the future of Goa but the authorities must encourage them to return
and invest their skills and savings in the land of their roots. But the high
level of corruption in Goa is something every NRG detests. So a war on
corruption by the Government of Goa could be the starting point in laying the
red carpet for NRGs.

In March 2006 Mr. Eduardo Faleiro got himself appointed as Goa’s Commissioner
for NRI Affairs with cabinet status. Why was there a need to drain the State
exchequer with a cabinet status? By virtue of his cabinet status Mr. Faleiro
now has 11 staff at his disposal. These include four peons and a driver who
work at his residence in Raia. The
Government of Goa is also paying the salary of one Mr. Amit Sharma who is Mr.
Faleiro’s clerk based at Delhi. Besides the 11 staff that are employed by Mr.
Faleiro, the Director of NRI Affairs, Mr. Ulhas Kamat (a post officially yet
not created) and his two clerks are also being paid by the State treasury.
There is no doubt that Goa needs a NRG (non-resident Goan) cell to act as an
interface to resolve the grievances of the NRG’s across the world. An
efficient Director with
two or three dynamic and pro-active staff is all that was needed.

The 2007 Goan Convention organized by Mr. Eduardo Faleiro at a 5 star hotel at
Dona Paula cost the tax year almost Rs 40 lakhs. As a registered delegate at
that Convention I did attempt to raise the issue of the Regional plan and
illegal mining. Mr. Faleiro however summoned the police and asked me to leave
which I did after seeking a refund of the delegate fee I had paid. I felt that
the convention needed to deliberate the anti-Goa, anti-people and an
anti-environment Regional

Joe,
This jetty is within walking distance from where I was staying in Panjim
earlier this year. Every evening we would walk on the beaches and when we
approached the jetty, a uniformed police man would shoo us away. One day, I
asked a local what the policeman was saying and he translated, The jetty is
only for foreigners.

I doubt any govt i.e. city, state or national, in Canada could use tax money to

I read with great interest this news item and it has made my day.

Since 1962, I have considered Lal Krishna Advani ( and his brand of RSS-BJP)
the most secular person in the entire world who deserves to be locked up in
the darkest of the dark cell in TIHAR JAIL and the keys thrown out into
Pakistan.

That the so called 'Catholic' Delegation comprising of gullible Goans should
knock on the doors of this communal wiper in his hotel room pleading with
him to open the doors of his RSS-BJP to minorities aka Catholics should be
celebrated with fanfare. The only consolation that I have is that this
delegation comprised of Catholics and not CHRISTIANS who are being
brutalized, killed, murdered et al in various parts of India.
I have made a special note of names in the so called delagation who could be
interested in being given the BJP ticket for PORVORIM.

For them, when they call 'national parties' they mean the CONGRESS.

All I can say is VERY WELL DONE.
This delagation should do well to go down on their knees to plead with
Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi to hand-over the Prime Minister's chair to
this communal viper ADVANI. Chances are they might just listen to them.

I find the assertion that many foreigners...spoke Konkani fluently bizarre.
Konkani like most Asian languages would be very difficult for Europeans to
master. The wide range of phonetics required, which are not found in their own
language, make it nearly impossible for them to vocalise them not to mention
memorize them. Secondly, the syntax of the language is different from European
syntax and it would take years of dedicated study under the supervision of a

speak in English, have a hard time then speaking in Konkani fluently. So the
idea that many foreigners spoke it fluently is hyperbole at best.

Even Sir Richard Burton who could speak many Indian languages did not have
Konkani as one of the languages he spoke fluently.  This despite the fact that
he almost always hired Goans as his personal valet or cookboys because he
thought they were far less trouble than other ethnicities. There is one letter
from an acquaintance that says, he was heard speaking a mixture of Konkani and
Portuguese with his Goanese servants.

---
The report about a bunch of priests and nuns meeting L K Advani is a
'disgrace' to the Catholic Church, to use a milder term. While the
catholic community in Goa is a victim of several discriminatory policies
supported by BJP, we have a bunch of priests and nuns appealing for more
seats to minorities by BJP and cursing the Congress.
Seems to be that the jesuit priest is a habitual publicity seeking entity.
The last time he met the BJP leader a couple of years ago, when confronted
he explained that he was seduced into it by a Porvorim based christian
agent of the BJP. But an act committed the second time confirms exactly
the opposite. This time it is an act committed with free will.
Do catholics in Goa need to beg for seats from Advani who claims to have
been an alumini of St. Patrick's school but has been part of the
political tirade against the minorities in this country?

As I see it, there are two separate issues here:

(i) Whether *many* foreigners who lived in Goa in the 1960s-1980s
spoke Konkani fluently. Frankly, I do not know, and there are AFAIK
no statistics to prove one way or another. What I *do* know is that
*some* foreigners did and do speak Konkani fluently. This is specially
true of young kids who grew up in the villages, and had
Konkani-speaking Goan kids as their playmates.

Just to give one example: the German girl who unfortunately got
caught up in a badly politicised controversy in which there were all
kinds of interests (as the son of a controversial politician was
involve), had grown up in my village. Local kids spoke to her in
Konkani, and she was referred to as if she was some kind of a local.

Even a school like the century-old Mater Dei, in Saligao, today has a
number of foreign students (because it is a privately-run unfunded
school, and has an English-medium primary). Though this ICSE school is
not obligated to teach Konkani, they do teach it to those who don't
take a foreigner exemption from Indian languages. Some kids there
speak English too with the most Goan of Goan accents, though their
genes could be traced to Germany, Sweden or Kashmir!

(ii) The second question is how easy or difficult the Konkani language
is to learnt...

Spoken Konkani is not difficult to master. The current official
Konkani is difficult, specialy for those not familiar with the
Devanagari script. Apart from the script, one also has to cope with
the Antruzi variant of the langauge there, which is not the commonly
spoken kind in large parts of Goa.

Of course, it is still hard to find Konkani learning courses and
texts, in Goa itself! Not to speak of tutors (many scholars face this
problem). But for foreign children, growing up with local children,
this is hardly a problem.

Lastly, I think Richard Burton's experiences a century or more ago are
hardly relevant to the experiences of tourists (and their children) in
today's Goa. He came with a certain baggage, while the contemporary
interest is quite different. FN

Two catholic youths got butchered on the streets of bombay at the hands of
slumlords political goons and the Bishop is still quiet but what can one
expect from spineless bishops the past/present/future bishops appointed for
bombay never dare to speakup against the slumlords political goons………from
1960 onwards around 5000 catholics in bombay have been attacked by
slumlords political goons some of these catholics did not survive more
than 90% of these attacks were related to land related issues…….since
catholics are non-violent unarmed and will not retaliate with a
vengenance due to which the slumlords political goons have taken
advantage of the catholics….….but what is more shameful is that no foreign
funded catholic missionaries bothers to offer financial help to the
families of the catholics who are attacked by slumlords political goons
the only thing the catholic missionaries are interested is in utilizing
their foreign funds for serving the non-catholics living in slums in order
to convert them.

Christian Catholic Clergy Missionaries should stop wasting church wealth,
church funds, money recvd from sale of vacant church properties foreign
donations on fraudulent allurement conversion activities……instead the
church wealth, funds foreign donations should be utilized in providing
financial assistance to poor catholic families…….financial assistance to
those catholic youth who want to become doctors engineers IAS/IPS officers
etc……..and financial assistance to those catholic youth who want to become
self-employed…..and financial assistance to those catholics who want to
repair their old dilapidated houses………and financial assistance to
unemployed catholic youth……..and financial assistance to those catholics
who are sick and cannot afford doctor hospital fees……..and financial
assistance to all the needy and poor catholics………the SAD part is the
catholic clergy/missionaries are not under the control of the lay catholics
due to which the demands of the lay catholics is not of any relevance to
the catholic clergy/missionaries in India.

Look at the Jain Community whatever gold coins, diamonds, silver,
foodgrains, sugar, ghee, money, etc the wealthy jains donate to the jain
temples the caretakers of the jain temples redistribute the gold coins,
diamonds, silver, money, etc to the poor jains this way the wealth of the
jains remains within the jain community no wonder the jain community is the
richest community in India.

Some Mangalorean Konkani Catholic Associations in Bombay/Vasai are doing an
excellent job in utilizing church parish halls in providing some basic
training to those mangalorean catholic youth who are interested in becoming
IAS/IPS officers………eastindian associations which are only interested in
organizing singing competitions food festivals should learn a few things
from the mangalorean associations.

The Indian govt. is going to pump Rs. 64000 crore to setup more troops
battalions at the China border……the Indian govt. is most welcome to setup
the troops battalions but it would be very nice of the govt. to print
64000 crore extra currency notes instead of burdening the common man with
more taxes, fuel hikes, etc.

Today India would have been a developed country if the Indian govt. State
govts. in the past had strictly enforced the two child policy and passed
stringent laws against corruption – female foeticide/infanticide –
communal/casteists forces - divisive politicians – land grabbers – black
money, etc etc etc AND improved the infrastructure, industries job
opportunities in rural backward districts…….BUT it’s late now……there are
300 million Indians who are struggling with Rs.20/- a day and with
population rising expect more poor people more crimes more water shortage
more housing problems more transport problems more food shortage more land
shortage etc etc etc.

150 years back the native catholics in bombay known by the name EastIndians
( www.bombayland.blogspot.com ) possessed most of the lands in
bombay……but 90% of the eastindians were reduced to a status of backward
class because they lost all their ancestral lands in bombay to the british
raj, Indian govt, maharashtra govt, bmc, collectorsoffice, slumlords,
landmafia, righwinghindugroups, political groups, buildersmafia, mmrda,
mhada……..and due to Alcoholism, Infighting Jealousy the 90% eastindians
have become more poor………the other 10% eastindians in bombay who were able
to save some of their lands became wealthy by selling away their lands 1980
onwards to the

I am sure Goans were shocked to hear of the brutal murder of Keenan and
Reuben in Mumbai; they were killed for standing up to the eve-teasers.
What's more shocking was that these murders were in the open, by cold
blooded killers and the people around them did nothing to help; Not to
mention the apathy of the compromised police. More so, the Horrid Killers
appear to have a cloak on invincibility, as they feel that they had the
strongest political backing due to Vote Bank politics. We cannot get these
two Bravehearts back, but I think that if anyone wants to honor them, they
should start in some measure to speak up and act for what is right. We must
realise that in a way our Society(including the so called educated class)
has allowed such barbaric acts by allowing/supporting/glorifying specific
tainted politicians to be elected by falling prey to cash, alcohol, special
favours, corrupt favour, manipulative personal charisma, religious gimmicks
etc What goes around comes around and those in Goa supporting
thug/criminal/corrupt Goan politicians be careful, as God Forbid you or
your loved ones could see the same horrid fate, by the disgusting system
you are growing/supporting today. The very Politician you glorify could
turn on you, should his/her interests be higher than his/her interest for
you. I still believe that evil prevails only because the good majority do
not speak up and are intimidated by the evil forces!!

Many current Politicians have been ruling Goa for a long time and have
taken our beautiful state backward on all fronts. They have looted the
state treasury, sold land to sharks, changed demographics via mega
projects, made the system extremely corrupt; so much so that Goans can't
see a future in employment, business etc and prefer to migrate from Goa.
These Ageing Politicians call themselves Man of Masses, Dynamic Leaders,
other rubbish and feel that they are invincible. Their strategy of winning
elections includes (1) Buying off voters with cash, rice, fertilizers,
paying of amenities, illegal favours etc (2) Religious gimmicks and
dividing Goa's religious communities (3) Manipulative Charisma and so on.
Now as they are ageing, they want their Children to continue with their
destructive policies. I appreciate that some time the Kin can be different
from their destructive parents, but I cant see any of them so far in this
regard. If fact, I know that some of them planning to contest the next
Assembly elections are educated, but are actually much worst than their
respective Parent in Power. The Good People must stand for elections, they
have nothing to lose but the fact that the common Goan excuse of there
being no alternative, be addressed. Who knows some of the Good People can
even win elections against the Corrupt Anti Goan Goliaths!! We need just a
few Good People in Power to change the tide for Goa and I strongly believe
that we can. The Anti Goans cleverly use Vote Banks say for example (1)
Corrupt Voters (2) Migrant Voters etc to win and continue destroying
Goa/Goans for the benefit of themselves, families and their bootlickers; in
the same way the New Good People/Politicians must also use a very strong
vote bank i.e. the Vote Bank of the Good Goans who love their
state/identity and are pained to see it being destroyed today!!

As usual Frederick will regale us with his balderdash.

So he knows a German girl speaking in Konkani and extrapolates that to mean
foreigners speak in Konkani fluently. Yes, young children exposed to any
language have the ability to learn that language. Infact, linguists and those
companies that make Phonics for children are at pains to study how exactly
children learn language. But we are talking here of many foreigners who
resided in Goa presumably as adult fun-loving, pot-smoking hippies of the 1960s
that according to Dominic spoke fluent Konkani. And I say, this is a near
impossibility. For an adult to learn a language just by casually listening to
it, is an impossible task. Try it!! Ask the Konkani-speaking Goans living in
Swindon how easy it is to learn to speak English fluently.  Their children of
course will master it. And if you are dealing with languages such as Arabic,
Hebrew, Mandarin or any of the Sanskrit derivatives then it is twice as hard
unless you study it as a language for many
 years.

Secondly, I have no idea by Frederick has summarily dismissed Burton as
irrelevant to the discussion. Burton was a dedicated linguist -not a casual
observor or weed smoking tourist, and my point is even he does not have
Konkani listed as one of the languages he spoke fluently, despite the fact that
he must have heard it spoken frequently around him.

Here is a list of the languages he spoke:
http://www.sirrichardfrancisburton.org/rfb_languages.html

We do know that he had some knowledge of it because here and there, he
translates words spoken by his cookboys. Burton learnt and knew to speak
Marathi, closely related to Konkani. Burton believed that Konkani was a variant
of Marathi.

If you access the link it will say that he started learning his Portuguese from
a Goan (not entirely true, he started practicing his Portuguese with this
Goan). This was a priest that was stationed in Baroda. Because of his
relationship with the priest, Burton's quarters in Baroda were nicknamed The
Inquisition. Notice, he chose not to converse in Konkani with this priest but
in Portuguese.

And what is this baggage that he came with and how is it different to
contemporary interests in a discussion relating to language? I challenge
Frederick to tell me about Burton's baggage. I am only putting forward this
challenge because I know I can confidentaly beat Mr Noronha to a pulp
in discussions relating to Burton :-)

Now one reason why he would not have bothered to learn the language was because
it had not value to him in his army career. But his closest aids in his
expedition into Africa were Goans and had he been speaking to them fluently in
Konkani then much would have been made of it. Instead, it his Goan boys, who
probably knew a bit of Hindi and English, who were expected to be translators
within the group.

Best,
selma

Subject: Re: [Goanet] Did Bob Marley know Konkani?

Spoken Konkani is not difficult to

Selma, I have no problem in acknowledging your specialisation in
Burtonology. However, I see a problem in trying to understand
contemporary Goa by way of what Burton did or did not do. Or what he
did or did not choose to learn. FN
PS: And I'm not saying that breathless journalism (which we guys
usually indulge in) is a good tool to understand today's Goa either!

Chinchinim tackles garbage
The village Panchayat is not very enthusiastic about collecting, segrating
disposing garbage. It prefers to lose Rs 25000 plus annual grants for not
taking action It is one of the Panchayat that is hauled up by High Court
for not adhering to its directive It is unable to find, locate a sight for
garbage dump any where in Chinchinim The whole of Chinchinim, like many
other places in Goa is a big, open dust bin The connecting roads through
Chinchinim are a boon to those , who fling garbage in plastic bags all
along the roads There is no determined plan to tackle this issue on a sound
footing from the local body The Govt also does not in any way promote and
encourage cleanliness in the village. In the past every house used
to maintain an open pit for all types of wastes including wet wastes
generated by the individual house hold To day every one is sensitized and
conscious of garbage disposal .But the process is to keep our compounds
immaculately clean by dumping waste somewhere else and roasides are the
most dumping grounds
The Zilla Panchayat member distributed free reusable bags to no effect The
Panchayat along with Chinchinim Citizen`s committee and citizens groups,
confiscated plastic bags and even fined the holders for flouting the ban
order of the Panchayat An awarernace campaign was carried out with the
schools in Chinchinim supported by the Panchayat The Lion club at
Chinchinim distributed reusable bags at cost price, The CCC also
made available returnable bags with a deposit. All the deposits were
forfeited by not rerunning the 40 bags issued all attempts met with
failures.
Adv Furatado Agnelo is the most passionate crusader about the issue In
fact he is humorlessly nick named as the GARBAGE MAN He organised many a
seminars, distributed paper bags, distributed pamphlets even on Government
subsidies but he receives no support for actions on the ground The
Panchayat has boycotted his initiatives by not even attending the meetings
He is undaunted and resolute to this day. He continues to conscientise on
the problem, funding his self promotion campaigns. The Panchayat does not
insist on Garbage management by residential housing collonies, for which it
issues no objection certificates for construction These hosing complexes
greatly add to the pollution scene in Chinchinim
Now there is good news through private initiative by Benny D`Costa at
Bamado, Chinchinim .Incidently he is also the secretary of Goa seamen
Association and earlier took up the issue of illegal Mosque at Chinchinim
Most notable is that he has provided a site in his own property as a
dumping ground, when for years the Panchayat has been helpless even to
suggest a suitable site for waste disposal According to him the Panchayat
has not yet issued the no objection certificate to him The village
Panchyat of Navelim is in conversation with him to collect Garbage He
collects all types of Garbage provided it is clean and except wet Garbage
He collects the wastes from along the roads and all those who requests him
by roadside only Most of the places and roadsides appear clean due to his
voluntary effort. Segregation is also done on the site. At the moment the
collection is on a weekly basis The Panchayat, our local representative
,Lions Club, and other social organisation should at least
support financially his efforts, making a common cause with his initiative.
The Panchayat has no excuse now, in not collecting and depositing it on
this site He states it is an act of social service, concern and love for
cleanliness in Chinchinim, though it is not a financially
losing proposition or profitable one either
The People Of Chinchinim are proud of his taking the challenge and salute
him He has succeeded where others have not even ventured or failed in their
efforts Can the Govt take a look at this small initiative and support it
with resources needed ? Resistance and criticism is never found wanting
,but the experiment is on come what may He has added to the disposal of
garbage after the village feast much faster than ever before.

Goanet archives are witness to the repeated alerts of a sell out on RP 2021by
civil society representatives. But no one took cognisance. In fact Rajan and
myself were ridiculed for exposing these civil society frauds that were taking
the people for a ride. To make matters worse, these civil society experts on
the RP - TFwere the consultants to some village groups. Were the village groups
ignorant to see the conflict of interest even after a tip off?
Now that the death warrant has been signed it defies all logic to see these
village groups protesting in the TCP office over the RP -2021. If at all any
protest is to be held, it should be before the civil society serenaders that
sat on the RP task force and collaborated in this betrayal.
The village groups have no moral right to protest before the govetrnment after
being active collaborators with these civil society serenaders that were
hopping from village to village teaching people about village development
planning.
What has been sown is being reaped.

To set the record straight. A quote from the archives of the Hindu

IOC, BPCL and HPCL currently sell kerosene at a loss of Rs 18.06 per litre and
domestic LPG at Rs 287.59 per cylinder.

Petrol and diesel prices were freed by the BJP-led NDA government in April 2002
and revised on 1st and 16th of every month based on fortnightly average of
international rates. But this was reversed when the Congress-led government
assumed charge in 2004.

I do know where you are coming from, we Goans are

supposed to be the most literate people on the sub-continent.
We have a Goan descent minister in the British Government

We also have a half Goan who is the mayor of Lisbon  whilst
we have a Gujarati as the mayor of Panjim.

Amongst all these people all over the world we must have

Jorge -  for starters, try a more appropriate label: you are a west coast
native.  You once worshiped Mumbadevi.
The first of your cousins to slip on trousers called a convention in Bandra,
around 1880: only order of the day, a resolution that rechristened Marathi
peasants who now worshipped differently, Bombay East Indians.  It was
forwarded to Governor Duncan.  May I remind you that the Padroado diocese
switched to English from Portuguese around 1930.
Catholics have progressed from Portuguese, to English to -- patois.  This
cannot be labeled progress. We survive in an environnment in which store
employees ignore shoppers who do not use the vernacular, and bureaucrats are
downright rude to supplicants who do not fit the mould.
So try again: bury the soul of D'Monte, the 1880 tribal chief.  Call
yourselves Mumbai Kristis, speak the language of your neighbour's hearts, and
endear yourselves to them.  A Bassein native who lived in my home for eight
years left me fluent in Marathi: I do not feel sorry for myself. eric.

IAS/IPS officers………eastindian associations which are only interested in
organizing singing competitions food festivals should learn a few things
from the mangaloreian.

150 years back the native catholics in bombay known by the name EastIndians
(  www.bombayland.blogspot.com ) possessed most of the lands in
bombay……but 90% of the eastindians were reduced to a status of backward
class because they lost all their ancestral lands in bombay to the british
raj, Indian govt, maharashtra govt, bmc, collectorsoffice, slumlords,
landmafia, righwinghindugroups, political groups, buildersmafia, mmrda,
mhada……..and due to Alcoholism, Infighting Jealousy the 90% eastindians
have become more poor………the other 10% eastindians in bombay who were able
to save some of their lands became wealthy by selling away their lands 1980
onwards to the builders lobby…….these 10% wealthy eastindians have no
interest in helping the other 90% poor eastindians.and since
eastindians ( www.east-indians.com ) are christians it is not easy to get
jobs in bombay and since the catholic clergy have programmed the
eastindians to remain non-combative, non-ambitious, non-aggressive,
susegaad, dormant, politically inactive due to which eastindians are not in
a position to demand reservations of 5% in government jobs in bombay.

Goa Catholics seek Advani’s help
November 4, 2011

Goa, November 3, 2011: Disillusioned with the Congress-led ruling
coalition, Goa’s Catholics have made overtures to arch-foes the
pro-Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP -Indian people’s party) in a bid
to get support for their demands.

An eight-member delegation, including priests and Religious, on Nov. 2
met BJP leader L K Advani who was on a two-day visit to the state as
part of what he calls his public-awakening tour against corruption.
Fr Max Gonsalves, who led the delegation, informed Advani of their
unsuccessful efforts to get the government to change the dates of the
International Film Festival of India (IFFI) which clashed with the feast
of Goa’s patron saint Francis Xavier.

The delegation also asked the BJP leader to prove his secular
credentials by considering Catholic candidates for upcoming assembly
elections.

Defending the decision to meet with the leader of a party that is
regularly accused of not being friendly towards Christians, delegation
member Joe Carneiro said: “As Congress is not paying heed to our
requests, we decided to meet the other side, hoping we may get some of
our aims done”.

The delegation also told the BJP leader that the state government only
pays lip service to the Christian community. They claimed the western
state does not have a minority commission and the government does little
to protect the rights and interest of Catholics.

During the 40-minute meeting, the Catholics also expressed their disgust
at rampant corruption, especially with regard to illegal mining in the
state.

The BJP leader promised to look into the matter and tried to reassure
them that he bears no enmity towards Catholics, pointing out that he was
educated by Catholics at St Patrick’s school in Karachi.

Oh My !!!
Something has happened. A Goan's sleep has been disturbed. In the nightmare,
he saw Goa being Annexed and not Liberated.
May you dream many more such nightmares until you become SANE and
COURAGEOUS.

Congratulations, but it is much too late in time
.
Going back to many years, I read a very promissing advertisement in the
Navhind Times ( just like this post).
I wrote to the box number in reply to say to the advertiser May God help
you in your endeavour to Save Goa Why? Because I felt that Goans are
getting up at last.
To my surprise, I got a response to my letter inviting me to join up. A one
page constitution of 'VOICE OF GOA' party was included. The party was ready
to be registered with Election Commission of India.
To cut the story short, I met the gentlemen concerned, deliberated with
them, chipped in my bit towards the registration but never joined the
jing-bang. And from the outside, I am proud to have dissolved the so called
'Voice of Goa' party with everyone going home to call it a bad dream.
Why? Because, this would have been another of Goa's parties to follow in
their foot-steps to make money by giving tickets.
The old man who had his VISION snatched away from him twice, never recovered
from the shock.

May his soul rest in peace.

I am not very enthusiastic about this post by M Britto too.
If Goans are getting up, let them get up to demand SPECIAL STATUS for Goa
( which GRA is doing) before Goa goes down the drain. Then and only then we
shall Liberate Goa that has been annexed by force and made into a sordid
colony by India.

I, however do not agree to Mario Soares' (Portugal) views as published in
the NT today [4/11/2011-Pg. 8]. He ( Mario Soares) shouldn't have been in
such a hurry to sign the co-operation treaty with India on 31st December,
1974 without so much as confiding with GOANS who have been left to hold the
porous bag whether to sign it or not. Goans would have told him to put a
Special Status clause into that Treaty. These crocodile tears will not work.

To M. Britto I want to say.
Jesus will help you and others if you take the step forward.
Jesus never liked COWARDS.

Cheers

Subject: [Goanet] To all -- Law educated True Goans

To all Other Law educated True Goans of all over the world,
You'll know the truth about illegal annexation of Goa in 1961 and Yet
Being educated in law have choosen to remain silence for so long ?!! . I
am still at loss to understand why a educated person with degrees in Law
would remain silent to this illegal Unlawfull acts of Indian Govt, when
all indian Govt wanted was to make Goa as a Colony for its uncontrolled
evil population , loot and destroy goa from the face of the earth slowly
as years goes by.
But the question is :- Are these Law educated Goans are real Patriotic
Goans with Noble heart or are they born cowards ?!!!
Any way i request to join us .or atleast do something about it to
raise the issue of Illegal annexation since you all are a Capable and got
duty towards True God and True Goa .
Than perhaps Your name( like Dr Jack Sequire) will shine forever on this
earth or at least in Goan History even after death for standing up against
mighty Evil India as King David stood against Goliath( 1 samuel 40-54)
trusting in True Gods Help in the end .to defeat the
mighty Goliath , which most Israelites thought was
IMPOSSIBLE..not knowing that with God all things are
possible when a willing heart is ready to stand for the truth without fear
and Complete trust in True living God.
In true living God we trust and in his Holy Name( Jesus Christ) we put our
Hope [ Matthew 12:21]..that we true Goans will be helped by Gods
choosen people and nations.. to be independent Country.

Kind regards,
M.Britto

Mumbai Senior Advocate Amit Desai has declined to refund to the Goa
Government the five lakhs he was paid for the four hearings he never
appeared for before the Bombay High Court at Goa.

The Superintendent of Police North Goa Mr. Arvind Gawas had by a letter
dated 21st October directed Mumbai Senior Advocate Amit Desai to urgently
refund the five lakhs that was erroneously paid to him under a bonafied
belief that he had appeared for those four hearings before the Bombay High
Court at Goa in the Ryan Fernandes confirmation of death sentence case

In his reply to SP Arvind Gawas, Adv. Amit Desai has stated that when he
was approached by Advocate General Subodh Kantak to appear in the case for
the State of Goa he had clearly indicated that he would be charging Rs
1,25,000 for each day he was required to be in Goa either for meetings,
preparation or appearances in the Court. Adv. Desai has further stated that
he was also entitled to Rs 25.000 per hour for any conference held at
Mumbai.

Stating that his appointment was done by the Law Department at the request
of the Advocate General, Adv. Amit Desai has stated that he has raised
bills as per the actual understanding.

Adv. Amit Desai has also sent the Goa Police the legal opinions of two
former Supreme Court judges Justice B.N.Srikrishna and Justice S.N.Variava
from whom he had sought a written opinion to support his case.
Interestingly the legal opinion given by Justice B.N.Srikrishna is dated 19
th October which is two days prior to SP Arvind Gawas’s letter to Adv. Amit
Desai.

Justice B.N.Srikrishna in his 14 page legal opinion has stated that in his
opinion Adv. Amit Desai was entitled to charge conference fees for all the
days he was in Goa.

Stating that fees charged by Adv. Amit Desai were reasonable, Justice
B.N.Srikrishna has opined that the government order stating “per
appearance” did not state that it was appearance before the Court.

Further stating that it would be unfair to embarrass Senior Advocate Amit
Desai by raising such a dispute, Justice B.N.Srikrishna has also opined
that instead of nitpicking the Government of Goa should take a reasonable
view in the matter.

Justice S.N.Variava in his 4 page legal opinion while stating that Adv.
Amit Desai was known to be a very busy and much sought after Advocate in
Mumbai has opined that the term “per appearance” must necessarily mean
“appearance in Goa” and not “appearance in Court”.

Justice S.N.Variava has further warned that Goa Government will face a
situation where its cases are not properly represented as it will find it
difficult to get Senior Advocates from outside Goa to come to Goa and
appear in matters on behalf of the Government.

BJP is known for its double speak. In its hunger for publicity among minoirites
it has no problem with a delegation of foolish catholic priests and nuns
meeting with L K Advani to impress upon him the need to give more party seats
to minorities in BJP dominated bastions. However, the BJP accuses catholic
priests in Goa for interfering in politics. Does it not amount to political
intereference when a bunch of priests and nuns demand party seats for
minorities in elections?

A
Konkani speaking Kuwaiti
It was at a
photo-copying shop in Kuwait many years ago.
A Kuwaiti man and I
were standing side by side, when we ought to have stood one behind the other,
for
a turn to get our construction drawings copied.
After the client before
us was done with, the Kuwaiti, as all of them think  is their prerogative, went
ahead of me to the
machine. I let him hear my displeasure, mildly though, and the man quickly
turned back and apologised: “Borem re baba, tum zalear tum voch”.
First of all, how did a
Kuwaiti come to speak in my mother tongue so spontaneously , and secondly, how
did he guess I was a Goan?
Having been overwhelmed
by such a gesture, not only did I give him the privilege due a Kuwaiti, but even
got to know him better. He was a member of one of the oldest families of
Kuwait, the “AbdulRazzak’s”, who had made Goa his second home for several
years, but gave up just when the Portuguese did, to join the family business
back home. His uncle, incidentally, was a sponsor of the “Indian School” in
Kuwait.
As for the second part,
the Kuwaiti in question, as indeed most of them in those times, could easily
distinguish a ‘farangi’ Indian from a ‘Hindi’. I only became aware of this as
time went by, and that was perhaps one of the reasons how, my chance encounter
with a Konkani speaking Kuwaiti drew us closer to each other, along with his
Aligarh University graduate uncle, Khalid.

I challenge
Frederick to tell me about

Selma,

You will definitely find my assertion bizarre because your imagination
forces you to fly-off on a tangent that leads to your commentary that is
out of context.

For starters let me remind you, this thread began about Bob Marley. I
suggest you read my comments of Nov 3/11 again. And I quote As far as
Konkani is concerned, many foreigners who lived in Goa from the late
1960s through mid 1980s spoke Konkani fluently. Of course, their
children spoke better Konkani. Presently, foreigners' children are
learning Konkani in our schools.

Now tells us, was Richard Burton living in Goa from the late 1960s to
the mid 1980s? Was he from the same era as Bob Marley?

Konkani may be difficult for Europeans to master but not for those who
lived in Goan villages continuously for over two decades and who spent
'all of their time with the locals.'

Some foreigners married local girls and boys and thus became part of our
society; obviously, they mastered Konkani through their spouses. Some
even took tuitions in Roman script from the locals to improve their
Konkani. Keep in mind Anjuna was the haven of hippies!

There were some foreigners who gave up their citizenship and took up
local jobs like breaking wood, plucking coconuts, collecting tisreo or
cockles in the river, etc. These foreigners spent their evenings at
tavernas chatting and sharing local gossip – only the color of their
skin and eyes differentiated them from the locals - not Konkani language.

Their accent might not be 100% Goan but that does not mean that they did
not speak Konkani fluently. For that matter, even an Asian with a PhD in
French may not produce the same accent as a French national but he
surely can speak French fluently.

Immediately after Goa’s liberation, many Goans learned Hindi by watching
Hindi movies. Their accent was not perfect but that does not mean they
could not speak Hindi fluently.

Goans who worked in the Gulf, learned Arabic and used the language in
their respective fields. Their accent may not meet Arabic standards but
that does not mean they cannot speak Arabic fluently.

As far as your assertion regarding Sir Richard Burton. He may have hired
Goans as his personal valet or cookboys but I doubt he spent 'all of
his time' with them to learn Konkani. Had he done that, perhaps he might
have spoken Konkani fluently.

From: Carvalho

I find the assertion that many foreigners...spoke Konkani fluently
bizarre. Konkani like most Asian languages would be very difficult for
Europeans to master. The wide range of phonetics required, which are not
found in their own language, make it nearly impossible for them to
vocalise them not to mention memorize them. Secondly, the syntax of the
language is different from European syntax and it would take years of
dedicated study under the supervision of a trained monshee to master it.
Even Goans who live in Goa but predominantly speak in English, have a
hard time then speaking in Konkani fluently. So the idea that many
foreigners spoke it fluently is hyperbole at best.

Even Sir Richard Burton who could speak many Indian languages did not
have Konkani as one of the languages he spoke fluently. This despite
the fact that he almost always hired Goans as his personal valet or
cookboys because he thought they were far less trouble than other
ethnicities. There is one letter from an acquaintance that says, he was
heard speaking a mixture of Konkani and Portuguese with his Goanese
servants.

Best,
Selma
