-- Forwarded message -- From: Roland Mascarenhas roland...@gmail.com Date: Fri, Oct 5, 2012 at 11:20 AM Subject: Re: Have We Lost It? - Stray Thoughts of a Toronto Goan To: bo...@goanet.org Hi Bosco, Hope you're doing well. My comment below: - An interesting discussion sparked by a provocative, if not inflammatory column by Mr. Francis. Although my namesake is an eloquent writer, his claims (“What apologies can be made for very rich individual Goans who have winged their way into the economic stratosphere without a second glance to their hoi-polloi far behind?”; “Today's Goan corporate bigwigs have their noses so far up in the air they couldn't smell their own odors”) are questionable and lacking balance. It seems as if every few months a new comment has emerged focusing on the Goan identity crisis and its link to generational and cultural differences (East-West), and community organizations. But many of these auto-thoughts are superficial and polarizing in nature, lacking both social history and refusal to acknowledge the complexity of the modern day. As a 20-something cultural straddler born in the Greater Toronto Area, I have seen first-hand the harms of this ‘selective’ nostalgia for the past by my elders. Goa’s emigrant patterns in the first half of the past century are a product of economic circumstances, but have left our culture balkanized and fused with identity politics. The nation-state, be it Kenya, Uganda, Karachi or UAE, has replaced the village communal, but has splintered Goan diasporic communities into sub-cultural organizations. Correspondingly, nearly all of the organizations in Toronto - bar the 55+ associations – attempt to capture a niche market, leading to augmented attrition rates in membership, event and committee involvement, and dare I repeat Mr. Gabe Menezes’ comment, a higher proportion of interracial relationships. “Disco clubs” and “village feasts” are channels for young people to meet, but what constitutes a suitable number of participants is dubious: are 20 young adults enough? How about 60? The contemporary problem is not solely the deficit of avenues to meet, but also the perception we have of our community and the rampant self-loathing demarcated by the ethnic optioning (Goan young adults tell their friends they’re “Goan,” yet are oblivious to the history of the region and are fastidious in their selection of Goan traditions. When they leave the country on vacation they’re “Canadian”). As well as the common disassociation from our ‘homeland’ (“I’m African,” is the frequent mantra uttered by Goans. Tellingly, one Goan Soccer League team in Toronto, Margao Simba, maintains a strong bond with their African heritage, witnessed by the symbol of a lion, one player even getting an extensive back tattoo of a pride in a jungle. Read more here: http://alturl.com/gooqj). Post-2000 has been a time of technological advancement, but also cultural erosion. Years after its’ initial inception, the debate on what constitutes the current Goan Identity has yet to conclude. Instead, it continues to be ‘caught between two worlds,’ one of which is the nostalgia politics of the past (Mr. Francis’s comment), the other revealed in the subsequent responses about the Goan pioneering spirit. Goans continue to demonstrate this tension in the present: full-of-opinions yet unwilling to act on them. -Original Message- From: manuel tavares A good example are the Hindu Goans who did not venture outside Goa in any considerable numbers. Leave aside going to inhospitable places like remote corners of Africa. These Hindus did not even venture of Bombay or other parts in any significant numbers. RESPONSE: AFAIK, Hindu Goans emigrated to Mumbai (Bombay) in the 19th century. Sorry cannot give you academic references offhand. But they did and besides enhancing themselves established the Goa Hindu Association, based in downtown Girgaum, to uplift the community. They performed similar philanthropic works as the GOAs the world over. Teresa Albuquerque's Goan Pioneers in Bombay [1] may throw more light on this issue. As far as new immigrants are concerned, precisely what I say, they are not inclined to join the GOA as they have no history of belonging to any sort of club. RESPONSE: I don't believe the GOA sell themselves as prior membership to any sort of club not necessary. But I do know with certainty that new immigrants are usually dealing with issues that affect new immigrants - jobs, house, jobs, rent, jobs, family, jobs, kids school, jobsyou get the drift. This club system was a truly British of European one from which Goans who came from British Ruled Colonies emulated and when the British left India, the exclusive clubs which they attended gradually disappeared. RESPONSE: It is more than likely these clubs are headed for extinction following in the footsteps of the colonialists. This is perhaps due to the Indian cultural system of Cast and creed and not social status as the British had. RESPONSE: Were there not caste based clubs in Africa?? There were of course the Goan clubs in Bombay but these too were mostly cast driven. RESPONSE: I suppose the above reference is to the Kudds of Bombay [2]. They served their purpose just when Goans needed them most. Many village clubs have closed down and some continue to survive. Hopefully they will benefit ($$$) from the construction windfall to hit South Mumbai. It is heartening to note that the GOA Toronto is in recovery mode. RESPONSE: Last Sunday (Sep 30/12) there was a Town Hall Meeting Symposium held in Mississauga [3] - the professed Goan Mecca in the GTA. Not only was there a sizable Goan attendance but the organizers began and ended the program on schedule. The event was spearheaded by the Canorient Toronto. [Goanet] Fw: Press Note for kind favour of Publication - Re: SC Halts Mining Activity in Goa.
- Original Message - From: floriano To: Gomantak Times Sent: Saturday, October 06, 2012 11:21 AM Subject: Press Note for kind favour of Publication - Re: SC Halts Mining Activity in Goa. Date: 06.10.2012 To, The Editor, GOMANTAK TIMES, Panjim-Goa Sir, Sub: Press Note for kind favour of Publication - Re: SC Halts Mining Activity in Goa. The Goa Su-Raj Party hails the decision of the Apex Court to halt all mining activity in Goa, forthwith. The Party also hails the decision of 'Goa Foundation' to take this matter of indiscriminate, unlawful and illegal mining in Goa to the Supreme Court in a well deserved Public Interest Litigation and congratulates it for it's unbridled success. This Party is not at all surprised [as reported by the section of the Press] that Goa's CM, Mr. Manohar Parrikar should take 'full credit' for his actions in halting mining activity in Goa even prior to the Supreme Court's directive on 5th. October, 2012, because, taking full credit for things that are even remotely connected with his decision making process of U-Turns and Super U-Turns has been the order of the day. This Party is fully justified in saying this for the following reasons:- 1. With the incriminating Shah Commission Report, he positively did not have any latitude to do otherwise. 2. Even then, he has not done what he should have done, in the first place, things like:- (a) Filing a F.I.R. against his former party colleague and the then Deputy CM and mines minister, Mr. Digamber Kamat for unauthorized 'Condonation of Delay' in the case of the 'Mining Lease NO.2/FEMN/79, where the Shah Commission Report clearly indicts Mr. Kamat for 'Abuse of Power'. (b) He wanted to move the 'dump' ore and even clear it for export saying that the Shah Commission Report is not specific on the matter of already extracted ores, to pacify the mine owners. (b) He even went ahead to put together a special committee to be headed by retired HC Justice Khandeparkar to certify clean from unclean 'ore' when the Shah Commission Report classifies all extracted ore to have been illegally extracted whether the mines were legal or illegal, and since all mines had flouted their actual, permitted jurisdictions. To add 'insult to injury', he wanted this special (loaded) committee to find flaws in the Shah Commission Report so that he could get away with the already declared MURDER of GOA through rampant illegal mining. Confiscation of this extracted ore to recover the whopping Rs. 35,000 Crore loot has never been on his mind. (c) GMOEA [Goa Mineral Ore Export's Association] is an unregistered body which has been parallelly involved in exporting illegally extracted ore from Goa. He should have started an earnest investigative probe into this illegal Association and bring it to books, or at least expose it's clandestine operations. He has failed miserably on this account. (d) He should have been way ahead on the recovery road of the loot of Rs. 35,000 Crores which has been taking place since the year 2000 as endorsed by the Supreme Court giving credence to the Shah Commission Report, to offset Goa's dependent families on mining of their liabilities with the banks through this recovered money and generally to rehabilitate all the Goan families where they have been directly or indirectly depended on the illegal mining industry in Goa. But alas! He has been busy inaugurating the 'Magic Buses' of the indicted in Shah Commission Report Mine Owners who are seeking to pacify the aggrieved people after having been raped for years on end. (e) His Police Stations ( He is the Home Minister) pass-off sensitive information to the pro-mining lobby of the impending study visit to the mines in the area (Sanguem) of the Journalist's Association so that the unsuspecting scribes are unduly held hostage by the pro-mining mob for hours with threats of killing them. No action has been taken on this account where his police department has been on the PAYROLL of the mine owners at all times. and finally, (f) Instead of trying to solve the problems of the mining industry aggrieved general public, he has been adding to the already burdened State's Treasury through sanctioning of schemes that are totally unnecessary at this very moment, schemes such as Laadli Laxmi and others, even to the extent of borrowing from the market Rs. 200 Crores in his populous move to sustain his vote-bank in a very irresponsible manner at the cost of the Tax Payer. The Goa Su-Raj Party is, therefore, forced to ask the pertinent question as to whether the Manohar Parrikar Government is not the IRRESPONSIBLE Government. Thanking you, Yours Sincerely, for Goa Su-Raj Party Sd/- Floriano Lobo
[Goanet] Overseas Goans blow earnings on personal consumption
I came accross an article on NT dated 6th October on the above subject written by Mr. Ramnath N Pai Raikar. A great article to read but i would like to make a mention of some facts. As i was reading his article i came accross the following ParagraphInterestingly, the statistics with the office of the Commissioner for NRI Affairs, Goa further states that the migration of high-skilled professionals, doctors, engineers, IT professionals and those in other knowledge economy sectors has been mostly to North America. At many Global Goan Conventions i have attended where the NRI office is well represented i was privileged to have been given an opportunity to speak my mind and i did mention the Goans overseas are ready to relocate back to Goa subject to the asurance from the Goa Government that Goans will be supported in every way on their investments and one of them is Information Technology ,i did mention that should Goan's invest in ICT in Goa ,the Government should give opportunites to these companies with some Projects in Computerization in different sectors ...why would someone leave a promising Job overseas and then invest in Goa when computerization projects are not being done by any Goan Company ..(i stand corrected) I would be pleased to read if any Goan IT company is implementing any major or even minor project of computerization of any department or Ministry in Goa. My requests to have the assurance from Goa Government to support Goan IT Companies who want to start something new and provide employemnt to many unemployed Goans who are bright but not being given an opportunity to explore fell on deaf years, More than being emotional or passionate about Goa we need to be real and address the factual aspect of it more than mere verbal ..many a times we impress readers with what one feels about a subject from one side of the coin and it is worth reading but if you read not between but through the lines the information may not be accurate . I would still stress through this forum /Goanet , how many IT projects to be implemented in Goa is on the Goa ICT stragtegy Plan , does Goa have an ICT strategy Plan ?Is it a Public document if so can i please have a copy of the same ..i would like to take it up from here and let me see how best i can get the support . Re: [Goanet] Sanitise and Secure our beaches
Dear Isidore Mendis, Well written and very well appreciated detailed beach touristic advice. But you have written to the wrong man. The Tourism Minister is just for name sake. The actual portfolio or portfolios are handled by Manohar Parrikar. You think Parulekar-bab can prevail over the tyrannical CM? Worst is, if the CM thinks that his Tourism Minister is doing a good job and is appreciated, he will immediately move in and stop everything that is in progress citing some financial problems. We have a one man machine here in our CM. He is not going to change. Therefore, please write to him instead of to the Tourism Minister and you have a hope of being heard. Hurting sky-high EGO is not going to do you any good. If you do, it's going to be 'water on duck's back' Believe me, for I have studied Manohar Parrikar so intensely that I could pass a PhD exam on his predictable behavioral subject with flying colours. Foreign tourists coming via charters form 40% of the total tourist’s arrival in Goa. Incidentally in the year 2011 both charter and non charter foreign tourists’ arrival added upto 4.45 lakhs. The domestic tourists’ arrivals cannot be discounted because they form a major component of tourists visiting Goa. In 2011 domestic tourists arrivals numbered 22.25 lakhs. Goa beaches have always exercised the magnetic pull on locals as well as both domestic and international tourists. Anjuna, Arambol, Vagator, Chapora, Baga, Calangute, Mandrem, Morjim, Asvem , Miramar, Dona Paula, Palolem, Agonada, Colva, Betalbatim, Majorda , Utorda , Varca, Cavelossim , Morbor,Patnem, Benaulim are the important beaches in North and South Goa that have always attracted in very large numbers the visitors from within the country and overseas. For the past few years, the increasing incidence of drug trafficking, prostitution dens disguising as massage parlours or spas or dance bars , drowning of tourists, garbage strewn all over, and heinous crime like rape, molestation against women tourist etc have sullied the image of beach tourism of Goa a State which is also blessed by mesmerising physical features and terrific world heritage structures. In order to take on the might of the trafficker indulging in drugs and prostitution it is important for the existence of firm political will. These traffickers are generally hand in gloves with the politicos, local police especially the crime branch. In particular , your colleague Michael Lobo , Calangute MLA’s effort of cleansing of disreputable massage parlours that promote prostitution in the beach belt of Calangute to Candolim is a praiseworthy step. Similarly, the threats issued in the past few months by the Chief of Sri Ram Sena, Pramod Muthalik against women visiting bars and dance clubs assumes a menace to tourism. In order to nullify any adverse repercussions on tourism industry, the BJP government has to act swiftly against Sri Ram Sena which is nothing but a cancerous tumour that needs to be operated and destroyed. Let us not forget that domestic and international tourists flock to Goa in large numbers because this exotic state of Goa is an abode of tranquility and excitement. Your own BJP 2012 manifesto had spoken about new shack policy to protect local stake holders. Yes it is of paramount view to protect all the legal shack owners. The shack owners must be made an important part of the security apparatus. No law abiding shack owner will like to lose the business because of illegal activities be it drugs or prostitution. Illegitimate shack owners need to be weeded out .The entry of beggars, touts, hawkers, lamanis and any unauthorised personnel must be curbed on the beaches. Goa beach infrastructure requirements need to be addressed on a priority basis. Parulekar bab your Party Manifesto talks about creating “authorities for the purpose of development of infrastructure in specified tourist clusters to include areas in Vagator-Anjuna, Tirakhol-Mor jim, Arpora-Siquerim,Colva-Cavelossm, Bogmalo-Majorda, Agonda-Canacona villages and each cluster to get Rs 50 to 100 Cr annually for developing tourism infrastructure”. It is imperative that all our beaches have proper roads and good illumination in the night. Each of our beaches need to have changing room and toilets for both genders especially for fairer sex
[Goanet] About Tiatrs
Goans are born musicians. Goan musicians have shown what they are all over the world. I do not have the names of goans who are great musicians but I do remember some of them. Chris Perry, Frank Fernand, Sebastian de Souza, etc have spent their life time in film world giving music. In Goa we have Remo, Emilan etc. who are great musicians. But sad to say many of our tiatrs have cants that is songs sung during the play and also the solo songs sung on tunes from either hindi film songs or some English songs . Few tiatrist have original music in their tiatrs. I remember Fr.Freddy 's Niz mog. It had original music from another priest I think One fr.anthony cotta. I hope I am right. Later on a Cassette was also made on the songs. Lovely music and lovely singers. I think Mike Mehta's grant Road had music by Chris Perry. Every one wants easy song tunes from some English songs or film music because our actors do not want to learn something different. We are still using outdated methods on the stage. I often wonder when our tiatrs will have a nice stage settings. One tiatr of Prince Jacob that was adapted from Marathi drama had different stage patterns and of all the Prince Jacob's tiatr I liked this one the best. I can't remember the name of the tiatr. Today we should have tiatrs like Marathi dramas. All actors should have mikes on their body. They should sit, sleep, and act and people must be able to follow. In our konkani tiatrs one finds different props on the stage but one finds actors all the time coming in front and kissing the mike at all times.

Roland Mascarenhas wrote: 1) As a 20-something cultural straddler born in the Greater Toronto Area, I have seen first-hand the harms of this ‘selective’ nostalgia for the past by my elders. 2) Correspondingly, nearly all of the organizations in Toronto - bar the 55+ associations – attempt to capture a niche market, leading to augmented attrition rates in membership, event and committee involvement, and dare I repeat Mr. Gabe Menezes’ comment, a higher proportion of interracial relationships. 3) Post-2000 has been a time of technological advancement, but also cultural erosion. Have we ever truly broken the shackles of the colonial empire’s ‘Othering?’ -- Roland Mascarenhas, 1) Culture is ever evolving. Someone once compared culture to a clear lake. When there is an input and an outlet of water, the lake remains alive. Else it stagnates and dies. Goan ethos that were perfectly acceptable in my granddads time, for example their idea of 'adoption,' are not acceptable anymore. It is up to you and me to jettison what we feel is culturally obsolete. It is also up to you and me to hold on to values that set us apart from other communities. Once again, one cannot hold on to all values forever. 2) Inter-racial, inter-religious and same sex relationships are going to be the norm of the future. The choice a young person has today is: a) to depend on mummy/daddy to find a spouse or b) to go out and court a spouse of you own liking. Goan parents in N. America are on notice that their kids will find their own spouse. This is the reward for giving their off-springs a good education. A good education allows for economic independence which produces real partnerships in today's marriages. The dependencies that resulted from yesterdecades marriage are thankfully, a thing of the past. 3) The subject mater of this post includes a question mark. My opinion is that the faster we lose some Goan ethos, the happier we will be. While social and religious groups can be a comfort to the elderly, the same groups sometimes serve to 'ghetto' a community. As an example, I do not see the reason of moving to Canada if 20 years later, a person lives in the Punjabi part of town, speaks only Punjabi and even votes only for Punjabi politicians. Goans are different in that they have assimilated quickly into every community/country they have been exposed to. The ability to question and lose some inherited values is part of what makes us successful. The cherry on the cake is that, by and large, the community accepts those with differences. In other communities, those that do not adhere to the norm, are shunned. In my opinion, members of Goan communities, social and sports clubs have been luckier than most. Mervyn

Re: [Goanet] Overseas Goans blow earnings on personal consumption
On Oct 6, 2012, at 6:09 AM, Eugene Correia [1] Overseas Goans have become SHREWD to TO JOIN HANDS with the government or with local bodies because once the overseason Goans part with their money they are then subjected to a wild goose case. [2] Overseas Goans must think million times before venturing into Goa's business sector as joint-partners in any scheme. The risk is high. The government probably WANTS overseas Goans to blow their earnings in fattening their pockets. COMMENT: I agree with the CAUTION advised by Eugene, IF I have accurately understood his rather poorly scripted post. However, I wonder if it can be reasonably deduced that #s 12(supra) contradict each other. jc

The First Online Konkani Music Station - Started on March 14, 2000 http://www.live365.com/stations/61664 Satellite to help fight illegal mining in Goa Satellite devices will now help the Goa government to combat and curb illegal mining in the state. In an effort to curb illegal transportation of iron ore in Goa, authorities have now begun tagging river barges with a satellite device to keep a tab on iron ore ferried from loading points in the mining belt to ports. “This way we can monitor the movement of barges and also the load being carried by them,” director of Goa’s mines and geology department Prasanna Acharya told reporters here Wednesday. “The barges monitored by satellite will give us real-time updates as and when we want it,” Acharya said. he motorised barges plying on the Mandovi and the Zuari rivers, whose tributaries veer deep into the mining belt, carry iron ore from the mining belt in the eastern hinterland to the ports, from where the ore is transferred to large transhippers. With the recently tabled Justice M.B. Shah Commission report saying that virtually all mining companies are involved in illegal mining in Goa, the government has increased its vigil on mining as well as transportation of iron ore in the state. Acharya said the movement of barges can be accessed by anyone logging on to the Goa mines and geology department’s website — http://goadmg.co.in/ According to the Goa Barge Owners Association (GBOA), 298 boats are registered with it and all of them are involved in transportation of ore. The state government has imposed a temporary freeze on the production of more barges because of increasing marine traffic. [Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 28th Sunday of the Year
29-Sep-2012 Dear Friend, All of us have to make choices and important decisions from time to time. Some choices are easy but sometimes we are not sure and agonize over decisions especially when they can affect and change our lives. We like to find out what others feel about our choices. Do we check with our God? Are we able to detach ourselves from doing our will to do His will? Have a discerning weekend! Fr. Jude Sunday Reflections: 28th Sunday Detached from everything to be attached to God alone 14-Oct-2012 Readings: Wisdom 7: 7-11 Hebrews 4: 12-13 Mark 10: 17-30 The first reading is from the Book of Wisdom written at a time when the Jewish community was in danger of losing its identity due to the influence of Greek philosophy and morals. The Jews were abandoning their faith for social acceptance and to acquire material wealth. The Jews were beginning to believe that wealth was a proof of character certified by God, as a sign of God's favour. The writer prays for the ability to make a proper choice just as Solomon the man who is characterized as Wisdom was given a choice, to choose between material wealth or the gift of understanding and wisdom and choose the latter. Like Solomon we too feel the pull of many temptations that cast a spell on us. Power, authority, abundance of riches, and beauty can beckon us, but reverence for God is the beginning of wisdom, which alone can help us to decide wisely. True Wisdom and Folly A gourd vine wound itself around the lofty palm and in a few weeks climbed to its very top. How old might you be? asked the newcomer. About 100 years. About 100 years, and you are no taller than this? In less than a hundred days I have grown as tall as you. I know, replied the palm. Every summer of my life a gourd like you has climbed up around me as proudly as you have. And they all lived only a few days, just as you will. Purnell Bailey In today's Gospel we are told a rich young aristocrat came running to Jesus. The rich man is nameless, symbolizing many people in similar situations in life. In his eagerness he asks Jesus, Good teacher what must I do with my life? Young man, you know the commandments: Don't murder; You must not commit adultery; You must not steal... Before Jesus can enumerate the rest, the young man interrupts, But I have kept all these all my life. Jesus' response was to look at him with appreciation and love. Jesus wants the best for him and so he challenges him: You lack one thing, go sell what you own, and give your money to the poor and come follow me. The rich man could not believe his ears. He was shocked and stumbled away. Jesus, sorry to see him go said: How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God. That rich man stands for many who come to God wishing to serve him but in their own way. What is the one thing that we lack in following Jesus? It could be something big or something small, it could be something bad it could be something not bad at all or even something good, that we are attached to. The key word in today's gospel story is 'possessions' and that could be anything. The test is: Do I possess it or does it possess me? What happens when it is taken away, when I can't have it? St. John of the Cross said. Whether a bird is tied by a chain or a silken chord does not matter, it still is not free. Very few of us are called today to renounce everything and join the monastic life. Most are called to live their Christian vocation within their family. But all are called to let go of their dream, their own plan for doing His will. Giving up anything and everything by itself counts for nothing, except as a precondition for doing His will. Today's gospel is challenging us to re-examine our values. Have material values replaced spiritual ones? Has the television set pushed away all prayer time in our lives? Have we to let go of some of our work and outside involvements in order to spend more time with our family? Do we have to sacrifice some of the luxuries we surround ourselves with, in order to open our hearts to the plight of the poor? God's Wisdom in our Lives There is a story about Moses which is not in the Bible. It goes like this. The patriarch was sitting in his house very sad, and the Lord said to him, Moses, why are you cast down? Said he, Because I see so many people sorrowful, some have no clothes; some are hungry. I ask you to make them happy and content. The Lord promised to do so and did. But then Moses was soon disconsolate again, and the Lord asked the cause. Lord, he said, the upper story of my house has fallen down and nobody will come to mend it; they are all too busy enjoying themselves. But what am I to do? Lord, make the people as they were before.
