[Goanet] Colonial East Africa from Goan Eyes. Stray Thoughts of a Toronto Goan

2012-11-04 Thread Eddie Fernandes
By Roland Francis
Source: Goan Voice UK Daily Newsletter 4 Nov. 2012 at www.goanvoice.org.uk

FULL TEXT
If you want to read Diaspora history and relate to it, there is nothing
better than to get it from the perspective of someone who lived through it,
has a talent for vivid memories and sequences, can recount it well enough to
hold your interest and more importantly has no agenda in the telling.

By those standards, Braz Menezes' 'More Matata' now available in selected
bookstores and on Amazon is a book worth reading not just by the Goan
community, but by everyone else who enjoys being transported to an era that
seemed more simple but was not. Braz has accomplished a fluid continuation
from his first book 'Just Matata' so that even the reader of solely this
second book of the trilogy, finds nothing missing.

While previously the story is of Lando's early childhood and is virtually
bereft of any of the politics that prevailed in East Africa of the mid
twentieth century, the author does not shy away from those prickly issues in
this one. A good part of the current narration revolves around the Mau Mau
rebellion of the Kikuyu tribe of Kenya as seen from the daily life of a
young man in Nairobi who studies architecture in the country's first
Technical School and continues to an internship in a firm of the white
dominated business class. Nevertheless the politics of the time does not
totally cloud the author's writing. There is still enough devoted to the
real story - that of a young boy becoming a man living in a society that we
would find hard to understand in today's world and yet can sympathetically
view it from Lando's growing up.

The unhitching of a country from its colonial presence always makes
interesting reading when related many years after. When lived by the
settler-people of that day, it is always traumatic. To narrate this without
seeking sympathy or victimhood is creditable. When told matter-of-factly, it
makes for a good book.

Picture communities living the good life in a beautiful country not their
own, though not without the many sacrifices they have to endure. Imagine the
turmoil they find themselves in when the yoke of colonialism is finally
being unburdened. And then when the process of freedom is almost complete,
imagine what they feel when told that they have no place in the new country
despite living for generations in it. All of that happened in Kenya and Braz
Menezes records it for posterity. Not much has been written about this
except for the coldly historical, so such writings must form a reference for
those who one day need to come back to that age and that experience.

More than a little space has been devoted to Lando's love affair with his
childhood sweetheart Saboti a Seychellois girl turning woman. I would have
preferred a little less of that and more of something else. However, an
author writes what he feels and not according to a critic's dictates. Braz
can therefore be excused for that.

Not much has been written about the Goan experience in East Africa.
Therefore a novel such as this becomes valuable and not to be missed. Goans
can be great debaters like the Bengalis but when it comes to recording what
they experienced, they seem to be singularly lacking. To a non-East African
Goan like myself, every written word becomes a treasure chest to be opened.
Therefore these thoughts are not a critical view of what Braz has written (I
leave that to others) but rather but rather an acclaim of his having written
it in a way that is pleasurable and informative. I hope others from East
Africa follow Braz's path.

editions, visit http://www.matatabooks.com/

[Goanet] Sonia Shirsat, a Goan Fadista enthralls the Goan-Portuguese audience in Mississauga (Toronto) Canada!

2012-11-04 Thread Silviano Barbosa

Sonia Shirsat, a Goan
Fadista enthralls the Goan-Portuguese audience in Mississauga (Toronto) Canada!

Sonia Shirsat gave a thrilling performance in front
of a sold-out audience on
November 3rd, 2012 for the Inter-Cultural Evening at the Portuguese Cultural
Centre in Mississauga.

Accompanying Sonia were great musicians from Portugal and
Canada.

Goans who were the majority in the audience enjoyed Sonia’s
concert which was mostly in Portuguese with a sizable Konkani ‘tempera’
sprinkled to make the Show unique and closer to home.

Sonia started with the traditional Portuguese Fado, accompanied by Portuguese
musicians Manuel
Moscatel on Guitarra Portuguesa, Valdemar Mesdoubi on Viola Fado and Sergio
Santos on Double Bass.

Sonia slowly strayed
into Indo-Portuguese fusion. I loved her
“Barco Negro” rendition among other Fado
favourites, which was very touching with the superb tabla play from Askok Dutta
and the flute magic from Canadian Bill McBirnie.

Next to Sonia
Shirsat, the Concert was monopolized by a strong personality and a quality
voice and music from another Goan from
Portugal and Mozambique, Senhor Gonzaga Coutinho whose delivery of Portuguese
and Konkani songs sent a familiar sense
of Goan cultural nationalism through the
audience.

Gonzaga crooned songs from his vast Goan Konkani repertoire
together with Sonia with the likes of “Hanv Saiba poltoddid voitam”, “Ya ya
Maya—ya” and Mando like “Papachem license assam re maka” and many others. (too
many to list)

The session ended with the traditional Goan song “Adeus korcho vellu pavlo...”

In short the concert by Sonia was a wonderful evening
especially with her mellifluous and unique voice, she thrilled the Goan hearts
with her voice and love for our Goan Konkani and Portuguese cultural music.

The concert was
followed by a Dance with the Santa Fe Band.

Hats off to the tireless Goan-Portuguese organizers like Olavo
Joanes, Lamberto Joanes and Oscar
Monteiro who emceed the Show with his wife. The show started with a Portuguese
dinner.

N.B. On a personal note , I was thrilled when I was called on the
floor by Sonia Shirsat. Bab Gonzaga
Coutinho sang Happy Birthday to me in Portuguese and Sonia sang in Konkani for
me on my birthday.

Earlier Radio Mango also wished me Happy Birthday on their
Konkani Radio and played my favourite song I wrote for Young Chico on my
“Classic Goa” CD
“Mandovichem Udok”.

Silviano Barbosa, Nov 3, 2012 ,Mississauga, (Toronto) Canada
.

[Goanet] Thanks for your kind wishes, goanet!

2012-11-04 Thread Silviano Barbosa

I would like to thank all those who wished me on my Birthday, especially
joegoauk with his superspecial video, Dr. Jose Colaco and Ema, Roland Francis
and Frederick Noronha!
Enjoyed the entire day with good wishes from everyone, good food prepared by my
wife and enjoyed the evening with Sonia and her entourage in Mississauga
Ontario, Canada.
I wish everyone on this planet enjoys their Day like I did.
I realize that friends and relatives and other humans can make your Day! Who
hath seen Tomorrow? Enjoy the Day Today!

Re: [Goanet] Ismaili Trusts

2012-11-04 Thread Mervyn Lobo

manuel tavares wrote:
The Ismaili community as stated were Primarily Business class and traders. They
are possibly the most Modern and progressive Muslims in the world. They do not
seek converts nor encourage others to join their religion. In East Africa, they
contributed enormously to the wellbeing of not only their community, but also
to other communities by way of their hospitals and other social networks. They
have a closely nit community and through their Spiritual leader the Aga Khan
who is the sole controller of the vast fortune that the community owns, they
fund ventures startups by community members and assist in making sure that
every possible assistance is provided to the projects they fund in order to
achieve success. In East Africa, the community got on well with the Goans due to
the fact that they were perhaps the most westernized Indian Community besides
the Goans who ventured abroad.

The Goans would do well to emulate their example of communal uplifting. It is
very rare to find an Ismaili who has fallen on hard times and not been taken
care of by their community.
--

Manuel ( Eddie) Tavares,

In Tanzania, two Ismaili's went on to become Ministers.
One was Minister of Finance and the other was Minister of Mines and Natural
Resources.

Another interesting aspect of the society/religion is that by donating to the
Aga Khan, one can receive titles like Count etc. This allows for endless
possibilities. For example, while other communities are building schools, The
Aga Khan Foundation has built a University in Tanzania.

Lastly, every year the Ismaili's have a charity walk here in Toronto. The funds
collected go to clean water projects in E. Africa and Afghanistan.

smiling and drinking Goans except for one stranger sitting in a corner.

The stranger was dressed in a lungi and was talking in Malayalam on his
mobile phone.
It didn't take long for the KG to realize that this fellow was from the
community everybody in Kuwait liked to hate.

The KG loudly shouted over the noise A drink on me for everybody except
that bhaillo.
Everyone cheered including the Malayalee who was the loudest with his
thanks.

Truly irritated now, after a few minutes he shouted again to the bartender
Another drink for everybody except that bhaillo.
This time the Malayalee was even more effusive and loud with his thanks.

Puzzled, the KG asked the bartender what was going on. He's the patrao,

[Goanet] The Sad Story of Aruna Shanbhag

2012-11-04 Thread Roland Francis
This happened in Bombay but with a few change in circumstances it could have
happened anywhere.

It was November 1973.
Aruna Shanbhag a 25 year old nurse from northern Karnataka working in the
KEM hospital pulled up and castigated a contract worker and ward help named
Sohanlal Walmiki for dereliction in his duty. Walmiki filled with rage
sought revenge. One day when she went to the hospital basement to change
into her uniform, he came from behind and choked her with a bicycle chain,
cutting off blood flow to her brain and though intending to vaginally rape
her, sodomized her instead, when he found out that she was in her menstrual
cycle.

Aruna as a result was left bleeding and unconscious and there was a hue and
cry raised by the media and the public at this incident. The doctors of KEM
hospital under pressure from their Dean covered up the anal rape and instead
categorized it as merely rape. This was done by the Dean ostensibly to
protect her in the circumstance of her impending marriage and to protect her
social standing and honor.

The police charged Walmiki with assault, rape and attempted murder and
sentenced him to two counts of 7 years to run concurrently. After 6 years of
imprisonment with one year for time served, he was set free and found
himself another ward help job in a different hospital. Before that, he
returned to Aruna's bed and tried to kill her again this time by breaking
the supports and causing her to fall on the hard ground. She survived when a
passing individual raised an alarm. Aruna did not die.

If the doctors had provided proper details of the incident to the police,
under Indian law, Walmiki would have been charged with 'unusual rape' (a
term for sodomy or anal rape) which would have attracted a mandatory life
sentence for him.

Ever since the incident 39 years ago, Aruna has been in a vegetative state
and has been caringly looked after by the nurses of KEM hospital who feed
and give her the necessary medication. Her family has abandoned her. She is
now 64 years old and besides normal aging, has shown neither improvement nor
worsening of her physical state. A social activist Pinky Virani who had been
affected by Aruna's plight for many years had filed a case that went up to
the Supreme Court for allowing of euthanasia in this case. The nurses who
were looking after Aruna were totally opposed to this. They wanted her to
die naturally. The Indian public were equally divided on the matter and so
was world opinion when BBC and foreign media including You Tube broadcasted
the case.

The Supreme Court ruled in 2011 that there was some brain activity still
observed and disallowed euthanasia for her. However, the court let
euthanasia remain on the table as a legal option for future cases coming
before it. A strange decision. The nurses rejoiced, saying that if Aruna was
of trouble and discomfort to anyone, it was only to them and they were quite
willing to lovingly endure it.

Aruna has suffered for 39 years. She shows no sign of life though some
doctors say she cannot be without pain. She only screams occasionally, as if
reliving that rape and strangulation endured on an early morning in November
1973. Her life has been spent in ruin. Walmiki continues to happily work in
a Delhi hospital.

Producer /Director - Com John D'Silva
I asked john if I can upload the film XINN on youtube, in response,
John came back to say
'Go ahead Joe, let it reach to every Goan throughout the world, keep

Infact, he also gave me go ahead signal for more (without asking),

This is something very unusual of a producer which clearly
indicates his love affection for Konkani and Goa

I was particularly inetrested in this film beacuse of actor Bobby..
I was his fan too, a longtime troupe member of Late Rosario Rodrigues.
He died in 2008, I attended his funeral and have a video clip too.
I have paid a small tribute - video will stop for a few second when
his name appear in the intro. I have also inserted his pic so that you
recognise him in the film.

The abandoned cove of Húsavík lies in Iceland's remote east (and is not to be

The lone church was built circa 1937.

[Goanet] Tanzanite Memorial Mass - Toronto 2012

2012-11-04 Thread Mervyn Lobo
Folks,

As many of you know, the Tanzanite Goan community here in Toronto has an annual
mass for friends and relatives who passed away during the year.  Those who
attend can console with the loved ones of those who have passed on.  My
favourite Goan choir performs in Kiswahili and I usually record one hymn. When
I arrived at church yesterday, the souvenir indicated that the recessional hymn
would be, Si Mbali. So I thought I would record the choirs performance after
mass ended. Well, I was warned, Si Mbali means Not Far Away and the choir
sang the hymn early :-)  By the time I got my pocket camera out, I missed part
of their performance. Anyways, since they really did a good job, here is part
of their performance for those who want to hear a good Kiswahili hymn again.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2s5pG06aKYI

The second video is of the speeches given. While this may sound boring, it does
give some idea of how lucky this community is - mainly because of the number of
people we have volunteering.

[Goanet] Goa Sudharop: Preserve, protect Goa's wildlife

2012-11-04 Thread George Pinto

Goa Sudharop is pleased to support the ANIMAL RESCUE SQUAD (ARS) in Goa through
a workshop for students this month. Special thanks to the efforts of our
Trustee Rajendra Kerkar, well known Goan environmentalist, in organizing this
workshop.

Information on ARS:
ARS came into existence in the year 1999. At the beginning this was a small
organization with very few members. Presently the strength of this animal
loving organization is growing and has reached above 110 active members. The
purpose behind giving birth to this organization is to protect Goa's wildlife
and nature. Day by day, poaching of animals is increasing exponentially due to
human greed. Now this little part of Goan nature is remaining and we have to
protect it.

ARS provides information and educates people about Goa's nature and wildlife
through various informative, educational nature-based programs. We also keep
watch on those people who hurt wildlife and we convince them to protect nature
instead of harming it. We provide practical solutions to help humans to live in
harmony with nature and natural wild animals.

The main function of ARS is to rescue (save set free) any kind of wild
animals from a danger area and move it to the safer place. Till today we
rescued snakes, and other wild animals, reptiles and birds e.g. leopards,
monitor lizards, deer, wildcats, wild boar, gaur, jackal, crocodiles, monkeys
various birds when they are in danger.

ARS also conducts the programs and seminars on wildlife in villages, schools,
colleges, factories, government establishments, etc. where people get
information on snakes and first-aid procedures on snake bites and also
information on Goa's wildlife and environment.

Today’s students are tomorrow’s future - there is a need to educate them about
the importance of Goa's wildlife. Anybody who is interested will be welcomed to
be a part of our organization. For this he/she has to visit our office situated
in Bicholim. One thing each and everybody has to follow is not to harm any
living being of the earth and convince the people to do so. ARS is located in
North Goa at Animal Rescue Squad, House No. 40, Near Water Tank, Bhailipeth,
Bicholim City, Goa.

[Goanet] Purgatory

2012-11-04 Thread George Pinto
Oh my ... some of you go to church every Sunday but do not pay attention to
details in the Bible.

God, being Goan, gave the name PURGATORY to her birthplace Goa, which as
everyone knows is a combination of heaven and hell. Pur means settlement
(sometimes city) as in Nagpur, Kolhapur, Sholapur, Udaipur, etc. So the story
of Goa's settlement is PUR-GOA-STORY, shortened to pur-ga-tory to save time and
ink since it is referenced so many times.

So now you know the truth.

Hope this helps.

George
P.S. On a serious note, are those incredible Kolhapuri sandals/chappals still
made? It has been years since I have worn a pair.

If the Supreme Court (God) sentences one to life in prison, friends and

appeal with mercy petitions that result in a lesser punishment (Purgatory).
Then, if the convict behaves well and repents, he/she gets entitled to a

hence set free (in Heaven) -  hypothetically speaking.

It seems that a very erroneous practice is being followed at the Goa
Medical College (GMC). Patients shifted there from any private hospital are
being admitted as a medico-legal case. As a result of this, if the patient
dies at GMC, the hospital will not certify the death unless a post-mortem
 is done.

We recently had a young Ribandar lady diagnosed with cancer who had to be
shifted from GMC to Manipal Hospital at Dona Paula as there was no
ventilator available. The young lady who continued in a state of coma was
arranged to be shifted back to GMC when a ventilator was made available. On
being brought back to GMC she was re-admitted as a medico-legal case. After
a few days at GMC she lost her battle against cancer. But the already much
traumatized parents were in for further dose of horror and anguish when
told by the doctors that a post mortem would have to be done on their
 departed daughter.

It can be a medico legal case only if 1. A patient is brought by the
police for examination and reporting, or by an order of the court for
medical examination. 2. The patient was already attended to by a doctor and
a medico-legal case was registered in the previous hospital, and the person
is now referred for expert management/ advice. 3. When the patient himself
expresses intention to register a case against an alleged accused.4. If
after eliciting the history and examining the patient, the attending doctor
feels that some investigation by law enforcement agencies is essential to
establish and fix responsibility for the case in accordance with the law of
 the land.

I had an opportunity to speak to various doctors in the know who were all
of the opinion that the case in question should never have been considered
 as a medico-legal case.

The word autopsy (also known as a post-mortem) is derived from the Greek
word autopsia to see with one's own eyes?. After having seen the young
lady succumb to cancer what else was left to be ascertained through an
 unnecessary post-mortem?

Terry Tempest Williams had said ?An individual doesn't get cancer, a family
does?. This is what the family must have felt when told that the young
departed lady would have to undergo a post-mortem after having already
 bravely endured so much pain.

Let us hope that the Dean of Goa Medical College Dr V.N.Jindal will discuss
this issue thread bare with the Heads of his various departments so that in
future the cases where the cause of death is well established, an
unnecessary post mortem is avoided. A well laid out protocol may have to be
in place and uniformly followed by all doctors.

Valuers delegation meets Shantaram Naik to demand legislation to regulate
their profession

The delegation of professional valuers led by Shri Mahendra S. Kakule met
Mr. Shantaram Naik M.P and Chairman of Parliament Standing Committee on
Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice at his residence in Margao and
demanded that Government of India should enact an appropriate legislation to
regulate the profession of valuers.

The other members of the delegation consisted of Shri Earnesto Muniz, Shri
Lyod macedo, Shri R.P Varde, Shri Chandrashekhar Prabu Desai, Shri Vincent
Gracias, Shri Sravan Dubhashi and Shri P.C Gupta

The delegation brought to the notice of Mr. Naik that at present the only
statutory provision that is made for the valuers is the one under section 34
of the Wealth Tax Act and the rules made that thereunder by which, valuers
are registered by Chief Commissioner or Director General of Income Tax.

The delegation told Mr Naik that a draft bill prepared by the Government on
the subject, for which an expert committee was appointed to study, has not
considered the profession of valuers in totality and the same is defective
in many respects.

Valuers have informed Mr Naik that profession of valuers doing the
valuation of immoveable properties and buildings, agricultural lands,
plantations, forests, mines and querries, stocks/shares, machine and
plants, jewellery etc. have to be addressed properly in the proposed
bill.

[Goanet] Bhakti First Goan to Win Silver in National Women Chess

Bhakti First Goan to Win Silver in National Women Chess

Goa Carbon Limited Goodwill Ambassador and India's latest Woman Grandmaster
Bhakti Kulkarni (7.5 points) put Goa on the map of Indian Chess by becoming
the first Goan Chess player to win a medal in National Men/Women Chess
Championship. Bhakti tied for first place in the National Women Premier
Chess Championship at Jalgaon with Mary Ann Gomes(AAI), Saumya Swaminathan
and Eesha Karvade but had to be satisfied with silver medal behind Mary Ann
Gomes due to lower tie break.

In her speech during the prize distribution Bhakti hailed Mary's fighting
spirit. 23 year old WGM Mary Ann Gomes while speaking to journalists after
the function was magnanimous in her praise for Bhakti. It was lucky title
for me,said the Champion, the real winner should be Bhakti who proved herself
worthy as a WGM.

Bhakti, who started the Championship as 9th seed gave a sterling performance
by matching wits with all the experienced WGMs. It was one of the toughest
tournaments in my career, said a tired Bhakti after battling for nearly six
hours with top seed Eesha Karvade. I am happy to get Goa its first medal
of Men/women Championship.

Goa Chess Association Secretary Arvind Mhmal was the first one to offer
kudos to Bhakti. Many senior chess players across India also showered
congratulatory SMSs on the 20 year old who was accompanied by her father
Pradip and mother Priya.

Bhakti was all praise for her trainer Dronacharya Raghunandan Gokhale who
was busy coaching other Goan talents in Panaji . She said that Gokhale sir
used to come online to guide her in spite of his hectic day and prepared her
for the next round. Gokhale remarked from Panaji, this is just a stepping
stone for talented Bhakti. Watch how far she goes in future.

Bhakti is adding 35 Elo rating points in her ever growing kitty. She will
participate in the Commonwealth Chess Championship, Chennai from 22nd
November,2012.

[Goanet] BOOK RELEASE: More Matata (Braz Menezes)

2012-11-04 Thread Goanet A-C-E!

MORE MATATA: Love After the Mau (Matata Books, 2012)

This is the Sequel to Just Matata: Sin, Saints and Settlers (Matata Books,
2011) and (Goa1556, 2012).

Synopsis

‘Matata’ means trouble in Swahili, and falling in love across racial
barriers is big matata, especially in Kenya, a segregated country seething
with tensions after the Second World War. Lando, whisked out of Goa and back
to Kenya, finds himself enrolled in a non-Catholic Asian school on the edge
of an African residential area, just as the Mau Mau, a secret organisation
determined to overthrow the colonial government, is slowly spreading its
grip of terror from the far-off White-Settler occupied Highlands, into the
urban areas, around Lando’s school and allegedly into his home when British
forces round up Mwangi (the houseboy), his wife Wangari, their 7-year old
Stephen and the baby. They disappear without trace. Getting through exams at
the time of the Mau Mau prove a challenge. Meanwhile the Winds of Change are
already gusting across Africa and the rest of the world.

In a few years the Portuguese and British are forced to give up their
colonies in India and East Africa respectively, and just as the racial
barriers fall, the Goans who have lived under colonial rulers for over 450
years, are left rudderless and stateless, and have to make hard choices. In
spite of all this matata, Lando and the beautiful Saboti meet again under
extraordinary circumstances, and that is the biggest matata of them all.
Family, friendship, race, terrorism, romance and love, all play their part
in this engaging story.

Available on Amazon.com: http://amzn.to/YH4D0n

Kindle edition: http://amzn.to/SMsk6s

Both Matata Books are also available on Amazon Books in the UK, US, Canada,
France, Spain, Germany and Italy.

Wandering in Canacona, south Goa, on a monsoon afternoon this August, we
encountered a dhangar (shepherd) clutching goat pups that he revealed had been
delivered barely a couple of hours earlier.

Re: [Goanet] Stink fest

2012-11-04 Thread George Pinto
Does anyone know the answer to the following questions related to the STINK
fest (as it is sometimes referred to):
1. Has any Goan presenter been invited to speak at the event or are Goans
involved in providing the illegal location for the event, sweeping and cleaning
the floors for the outsiders, most far past their prime, visiting Goa,
informing us of failed ideas rejected elsewhere.
2. How much did the Goan treasury pay for this boondoggle? Last year we were
told it was about 50 lakhs of subsidy provided to these derelicts.
3. I do not expect any Goan journalist to speak up against this farce, since
they probably were provided free guest passes to the event and cannot be seen
to bite the hand that feeds them crumbs. But I could be wrong.
