[Goanet] AYODHYA
(This has reference to yesrday's debate on NDTV channel) Ayodhya– by: Bennet Paes The demolition of Babri mosque in 1992 was a national shame, leave alone a disaster. Not just this mosque, but any religious worship-house of such a long age and use as this one, needs to be kept out of harm’s way. In the case of Ayodhya, if there was a wait of 400 years, another four hundred would not have erased the myth of lord Ram’s birthplace. On the contrary it would have given further credence to India’s culture of tolerance. After all, history talks eloquently about the tolerance shown by Hindus to early migrants like the Jews, Parsis, Iranis, the Muhghals, the Portuguese, the French and the British, in return for which innumerable houses of worship, majestic monuments and world class institutional buildings dot the Indian landscape. All of these today constitute an integral part of India’s heritage. Historian P.N.Oak in his book: “Tajmahal - The True Story” places massive evidence that this piece of beauty is not, in fact, an Islamic mausoleum but an ancient Shiva Temple known as “Tejo Mahalaya” which emperor Shah Jehan commandeered from the then Maharaja of Jaipur. Based on this precept, taking away the Taj Mahal would leave India bereft of the only wonder of the world left behind by the Muhghals in India’s custody. Would any Indian worth his salt dare do a ‘Babri’ to Taj; or for that matter re-write history, calling it by some other name? (Excerpt from my book: SIMPLY MY WAY)

This is terrible. Shades of racism (aka casteism or not from this state)? AFAIK, the duty of the ambulance and the paramedic is to take the accident victim to the hospital for further assessment (unless the victim declines it for reasons best know to them), no matter his colour, status, creed or origins. Action appears similar to the summary justice meted out by the police on a criminal caught red-handed. Gabriel. [Goanet] Roland Francis: Goan Cooking Is Falling From Grace
Title: Stray Thoughts of a Toronto Goan - Goan Cooking Is Falling From Grace By: Roland Francis Source: Goan Voice UK Daily Newsletter 2 Dec 2012 at www.goanvoice.org.uk Full text: I wonder if anyone else has noticed the worldwide decline in Goan cooking standards. In the best case this could be attributable to the 'chalta-hai' (it will do) mentality that has permeated the methods and ingredients used in such cooking. In the worst case this is another leading indicator of the increasing loss of Goan identity that is becoming manifest not only in Goa but also in the Diaspora. Take the once real McCoy. Ingredients were fresh albeit unconcerned with good health. Those were times when there were few buses and even fewer cars and all that walking around villages and to nearby towns made exercise a natural activity and high cholesterol an absent entity. Of course many of today's known illnesses were not discovered then, but had they been, no danger would be posed by that food irrespective of age and genetics. Then there was the cooking process. The mixing had to be done just so and the stirring involved made muscles ache. Some dishes had to be kept for a certain number of days before eating - like sorpotel and miscut - while being stored in strictly specified conditions. It was all worth it. In the end, the taste was superb however simple the meal and you knew that freshness was a given. From the most humble grandmother or aunt in residence to the most sophisticated Goan chief cook in Bombay's or Karachi's leading international hotels, a common dedication to the art, was the hallmark. No written recipes were followed or recorded and all that expertise came from experience and a liberal dose of talent, virtues much under-rated in today's cooking circles which give undue credit to which institution you have worked in and under which chef you have learned your trade. What you taste today no matter where you go, is faux-Goan cooking. Time has been sacrificed on the altar of expedience, freshness on the table of heavy spicing and authenticity on the alibi of inferior substitution. The result is mediocrity that would turn the souls of past mestres into banshee screaming ghouls of paradise. Take a Goan wedding. Anyone who has not witnessed a wedding celebration in Goa in the day, is missing one of his or hers better life experiences. Usually, the quality of the table was in inverse proportion to the status of the bride and groom. No amount of liquor imbibed (and there was never any shortage of it) dulled the taste of the dishes, so one can only imagine what one's tongue would have experienced if unsullied by alcohol. The cooking had to be started and completed on the morning of the same day and the catch and crop had to be harvested and brought to the kitchen not before the previous night. The spices had to be delicately administered and sprinkled not only to emphasize the freshness and therefore the taste but also not to hide it. The gravies, the viands and desserts all complemented each other like some mafia nexus of made men, capos, law officers and judges all conspiring to complete some hugely profitable task, in this case complete satisfaction of every hungry guest starving after the long religious rituals followed by generous doses of the spirits that cheer. The only other occasion that challenged the old Goan wedding was the Parsi celebration with its Sali Boti, Lagan nu Acchar, Patra ni Macchi (one huge stuffed green masala pomfret for each guest) and other favorites, not forgetting the human comedy involved that rivaled the Goan in uniqueness. Nobody has the time today to cook like they once did. The average household in Goa minus the old folk buys plastic packed ingredients available in local groceries which they call supermarkets and turn it in pseudo home cooked Goan food via microwaves and gas burners. In restaurants rural north Indians cook purportedly Goan food in the butter- chicken and tandoori-masala style. Everyone seems to have gotten used to it. Expectations have been lowered and high costs have gone even higher thanks to bad money chasing even worse tastes. In the Diaspora too, what passes for Goan cooking has to be eaten to be believed. To those who know better, that is. Pork sausages have undergone a sanitization, becoming either milder than their Portuguese and Italian equivalents or spicier than their West Indian cousins. Fish curries taste like something out of an Eritrean menu and sorpotel and vindalho are rarely seen, in the mistaken belief that they and they alone would cause heart attacks and strokes. When they are present, you wish they would not have been. Such is these dishes complete loss of Goan flavor. So wherever you are and whatever you do, if you have the occasion to come across some kindly Goan soul that offers you a meal for cost or for free, no matter how humble or how elaborate or anything in-between and the dish you happen to eat reminds you of something your

[Goanet] In midnight drama, two AI crew members were held under IT Act
This item, though from Thane, did not get any space in any of the Mumbai based publications. In midnight drama, two AI crew members were held under IT Act Author: Meena Menon Publication: The Hindu Date: November 24, 2012 URL: http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/in-midnight-drama-two-ai-crew-members- were-held-under-it-act/article4130804.ece?homepage=true They were released on bail by Additional Sessions judge While the recent arrest of two young women from Palghar grabbed media attention, what was not so well known was the case of two Air India employees who were arrested under Section 66 A and 67 A of the Information Technology (IT) Act in May and jailed for 12 days. The two decided to go public with their woes after the outrage over the girls' arrests, hoping for some justice. Thirty-one-year-old Mayank Sharma had returned home after celebrating his wife's birthday on the night of May 10, 2012, when his doorbell rang at 1.30 a.m. Waiting outside were plainclothes policemen and two in uniform armed with semi-automatic weapons. They told me to come to the police station with them and when I asked why, they just stared at me, Mr. Sharma, who works as a cabin crew member of Air India told The Hindu. Inspector Dinkar Shilwate followed him into the bedroom to make sure he changed his clothes and stared all the while he was doing so. When he tried to call a family member in New Delhi, the police snatched away his mobile phone. They later confiscated his laptop. While this was happening, in Thane, a group of policemen were outside the 15th floor apartment of Air India senior purser K.V. Jaganatharao, 50. The police asked him to accompany them and when he resisted, they told him they had a search and seize warrant. They insisted he come in the police jeep and his family too went along in the dead of night. They asked Mr. Sharma and Mr. Jaganatharao three questions before they were formally arrested at around 7.30 a.m. on May 11. Whether they had insulted politicians, did they threaten to bomb and kill politicians and did they insult the national flag? All along the route to the cyber police station in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) the police kept taunting Mr. Sharma asking him if he wasn't scared of politicians. Unlike the Palghar case where the two girls who were charged under Section 66 A of the IT Act got bail immediately, the two Air India employees, active trade union leaders, were in custody for 12 days. The first complaint against them was made by rival trade union leader Kiran Pawaskar from the Shiv Sena who later joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). No one acted on Mr. Pawaskar's complaint on July 1, 2011 to a senior police officer Vishwas Nangre Patil. This was forwarded to the cyber police station, where police lodged a first information report (FIR) on March 29, 2012 accusing the two of uploading lascivious and defamatory content on social networking sites Facebook and Orkut against the complainant and politicians and also threatening the complainant Sagar Karnik (also of Air India) with death, and insulting the national flag. They were charged with Section 506(2) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 66 A and 67, of the IT Act, apart from Section two of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act 1971 by investigating officer Inspector Sunil Ghosalkar of the cyber police station. On May 22, they were released on bail by Additional Sessions judge N.R. Borkar who held that it appeared that Section 67 A of the IT Act was not invoked at the time of registration of the FIR and was included while seeking remand. Mr. Jaganatharao told The Hindu that while the original FIR did not have Section 67 A as a charge, it was added by hand by the investigating officer and when this was brought to the judge's notice, bail was granted. The section which refers to punishment for publishing sexually explicit acts in electronic form, is a non-bailable offence. The police also took away their Air India identity cards, their passports, their laptops and mobile phones. The police in the remand report stated that there was a dispute in the cabin crew unions between Mr. Karnik and Mr. Sharma and Jaganatharao over the president's post and they campaigned against Mr. Karnik and others using social networking sites. Union Ministers were also allegedly vilified. In addition the two allegedly threatened to kill the complainant or bomb him, and also insulted the Supreme Court and the national flag. One of the reasons for remand the police cited was the need to investigate whether Mr. Sharma and Jaganatharao had arms or explosives to carry out their threats. It was only on May 18 that the magistrate allowed the two home-cooked food and their own clothes which the police opposed in court. Mr. Sharma and Mr. Jaganatharao had to approach the Bombay High Court for release of their passports which was done by an order of October 25. They cited a Supreme Court ruling of

[Goanet] Australian Christmas
Christmas down under is usually a rather warm affair (in comparison to the northern hemisphere), unless we have vagaries of weather which gave us snow in the Victorian alps one year and hail (twice in one day) in Melbourne last year. Anyhow, enjoy the following Australian Jingle Bells lyrics: Dashing through the bush In a rusty Holden Ute Kicking up the dust Esky in the boot Kelpie by my side Singing Christmas songs It’s summer time and I am in My singlet, shorts thongs OH, JINGLE BELLS, JINGLE BELLS JINGLE ALL THE WAY CHRISTMAS IN AUSTRALIA ON A SCORCHING SUMMER’S DAY JINGLE BELLS, JINGLE BELLS CHRISTMAS TIME IS BEAUT OH WHAT FUN IT IS TO RIDE IN A RUSTY HOLDEN UTE Engine’s getting hot Dodge the kangaroos Swaggy climbs aboard He is welcome too All the family is there Sitting by the pool Christmas day, the Aussie way By the barbecue! OH, JINGLE BELLS, JINGLE BELLS JINGLE ALL THE WAY CHRISTMAS IN AUSTRALIA ON A SCORCHING SUMMER’S DAY JINGLE BELLS, JINGLE BELLS CHRISTMAS TIME IS BEAUT OH WHAT FUN IT IS TO RIDE IN A RUSTY HOLDEN UTE Come the afternoon Grandpa has a doze The kids and uncle Bruce Are swimming in their clothes The time comes round to go We take a family snap Then pack the car and all shoot through Before the washing up OH, JINGLE BELLS, JINGLE BELLS JINGLE ALL THE WAY CHRISTMAS IN AUSTRALIA ON A SCORCHING SUMMER’S DAY JINGLE BELLS, JINGLE BELLS CHRISTMAS TIME IS BEAUT OH WHAT FUN IT IS TO RIDE IN A RUSTY HOLDEN UTE Translations for those unfamiliar with some terms: UTE: Utility vehicle (aka truck in the US) Esky: ice-box Kelpie: a breed of dog used in mustering sheep thongs: slippers (not swimwear as in the US).
[Goanet] Family planning in Kerala
I came across this interesting article. I wonder what is the position in Goa. Best regards, U. G. Barad Kerala Catholics at ease with abortion Author: K. P. M. Basheer Publication: The Hindu Date: November 28, 2012 URL: http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Kochi/kerala-catholics-at-ease-with-abor tion/article4141018.ece Many couples in the community adopt medical termination of pregnancy for birth control While the Catholic Church across the world opposes abortion and birth control, in Kerala, which has the largest Catholic community in India, birth control is a way of life, with couples widely adopting abortion as a means of birth control. Kerala's Catholics, arguably the most prosperous community in terms of wealth, education, number of professionals, representation in the administration and the capacity to influence government policies, has been enthusiastic about birth control as a means to a better future for the family for decades. Many commentators have pointed out that the small family norm had helped the Christian community achieve its current educational advancements as a small family could focus its attention and resources on educating fewer offspring. Better education, coupled with other factors, helped the community scale social and economic heights. Better empowerment of Christian women, through education and employment, than of women in other communities has been a direct offshoot of smaller families. Family planning Alphons Kannanthanam, former IAS officer and former MLA, says the Catholic community had long back adopted the government's family planning and birth control measures wholeheartedly and has benefited from them. He told The Hindu that the Catholics were much more receptive to family planning and birth control than any other community in the country. He recalled that family planning had been most successful in Kottayam district, which had the largest Catholic population among all the 14 districts in Kerala. While I was the Collector of Kottayam for four years, I received the most support from Catholics in implementing family planning programmes, he said. Despite the strong stand taken by the Vatican against birth control, the different Catholic Rites in Kerala had been lukewarm about it as the community as a whole favoured small families. Though the Catholics attend church every Sunday and revere the Pope, when it comes to economic decision-making, they go by their own economic interests, Mr. Kannanthanam remarked. Since fewer children make better economic sense, they naturally took to family planning and birth control in a big way. Healthcare professionals point out that the number of abortions (medical termination of pregnancy) being done in Kerala hospitals is very high. Married women sought abortions for spacing childbirths and for employment reasons. Though statistics are hard to come by, one source said that in her experience, Christian married women had an edge in those seeking abortion. This was for reasons of higher education, employment and job prospects abroad. The huge majority of educated or employed women in Kerala, with not much divergence between religions, these days want to put an end to their fertility after the second child is born. I invariably get a request from middle-class wives to 'get it stopped' before they enter the labour room, a woman doctor said. Falling population The Kerala Catholic Church, which had earlier soft-pedalled its stance on abortions and birth control, started taking a fresh view from the late 1990s. One reason was the aggressive campaign by the Vatican since 1995, and the other, more important, reason was demographics. Church authorities noticed that in spite of the increasing prosperity and social visibility of Christians, their population was slowly shrinking. Census figures showed that the rate of growth of the Christian population was below the replacement level of 2.1 children per couple. The Church was directly hit by the fall in population - it found it hard to find children willing to become priests and nuns. The Kerala Catholic Bishops Council (KCBC) has taken several steps to buck the trend: advocacy, incentives for couples opting for more children and children's education support. It asked Catholic-run hospitals not to carry out abortions and discourage family planning operations. To step up the campaign against abortions, the council has set up a Pro-Life Movement under its Family Commission. In the aftermath of Savita Halappanvar's death in an Ireland hospital, which put the Catholic Church on the defensive over its archaic stand on abortion, the council has come out with a clarification. Abortion is the direct and intentional destruction of an unborn baby; abortion is murder of the unborn child, the KCBC spokesman said in a statement. Where any harm is caused, indirectly and unintentionally, to the health or life of the unborn child consequent

[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] Second Sunday of Advent
2-Dec-2012 Dear Friend, Whether we admit it or not, very often what prevents us from going ahead is our holding on to the past or getting bogged down by the present. We get so involved in what is happening right now that we cannot look beyond. Life is more than what is happening now -it will change. The darkest hour is the one before dawn! But we have to wait in hope for God's coming into our lives. Have a 'hopeful' weekend! Fr. Jude Sunday Reflections: Second Sunday of Advent: Looking forward with hope! He is coming! 9-Dec-2012 Readings: Baruch 5: 1-9Philippians 1: 4-6, 8-11Luke 3: 1-6 Today's portion of the Book of Baruch was written around 200 B.C. for the Jews living there who had a problem keeping their faith in God. Their temple was far away and they had no hope of returning. They were living among a culture completely opposed to their own religious beliefs and they were finding it difficult to be faithful to Yahweh. Baruch tells them not to give up their faith, not to give up on God. Your God is coming to help you. You came here in shame dragged by your enemies but God will carry you back. We too live in pagan times where the philosophy of life is: 'Forget God! He is not interested in you!' Today's reading reminds us that God is doing something for us. He is ready to level mountains and fill up valleys so that we might walk safely out of the mess we are in. In the midst of darkness he will bring light; in our brokenness he will bring healing if only we look up to him. Broken voices bring healing Last night I listened to voices in a small room, that were not the best trained. They belonged to ex-criminals and other convicts who had spent time in jail. But as they sang there were tears in the eyes of their leader an old man. Slowly his worried face looked up to God and he smiled. I knew why he had that troubled look. He had just heard that his eldest son had a tumour in his stomach which had been diagnosed as malignant. They had operated but the doctors had not been successful in removing the cancerous growth. The old man knew that his son was dying. Those around him were ones he had counseled over the years and helped in rehabilitating after they had been released from jail. They also felt his sorrow, and so with broken untrained voices they sang to him. Those songs made him remember that even in this hour of trial he could look up to God, and he did and he smiled. Those voices had managed to do what no trained voice could have ever done..! Anonymous Today's gospel begins with a description of the political situation of the times. It is not an easy time for the Jews, the Romans were task masters and oppressed them and made unreasonable demands on the Jews. The Jews were fed up and longed for a Messiah who would rescue them from Roman tyranny. Yet this very hopeless situation was also the context of hope and repentance. The person proclaiming this message of hope was John the Baptist. John the Baptist was a sign, everything about him was a sign and he was pointing to the imminent coming of Lord. He was not the promised one. He was the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. The reading reminds us that our preparation for the coming of the Lord is a two-way process. On the one hand we were reminded in the first reading that God himself will make the first move, he will level the mountains and fill the valleys so that we might come back unhurt. On the other hand ours is not a passive hopeless waiting. We have to play our part and open ourselves to his coming into our lives. For some of us it might imply knocking off the mountains of pride, for others it might be filling up the emptiness of our lives with good works, for still others it might mean giving up our crooked ways and walking straight along the path of truth. The present times might be difficult times for us but there are, in these very upsetting times, signs of his coming. Are we able to read the signs of his coming? Can we listen to the voice in the wilderness crying out? To be able to listen we have to believe, we have to hope, we have to be open to the God who comes in surprising ways into our lives. Let the one who has ears listen...! Wrong Swing! It was a hot Sunday in June. Millions of Americans were watching the U. S. Golf Open on TV. At a critical point in the play, the camera focused on Jack Nicklaus. He was in the rough and preparing to shoot out. Slowly and deliberately, he addressed the ball. Then for a full 20 seconds of prime time TV, he stood poised and ready to swing. Suddenly, at the last moment, he backed away from the ball and said loud enough for everybody to hear, That's the wrong swing. The sports announcer covering the match was confused and said, But he didn't swing! What's going on here? A lot was going on. And Nicklaus explains exactly what it was in his book Golf My Way. There he describes how
