[Goanet-News] In Goa, a Goa Strings Orchestra in a concert of international classical music
From Victor Rangel-Ribeiro Friends, Romance writers, and countrymen (and women), fair warning! On Monday, March 17, I will be conducting the Goa String Orchestra in a concert of international classical music. The programme will begin with Handel's jolly Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, which foretells she will be having a jolly good time with King Solomon if he gets to the Kala Academy on time. To enhance the couple's amorous mood we will then play Edward Elgar's Salut d'amour, and follow that up with his Chanson de matin (Morning Song) to set the mood for when the royal philanderers finally wake up. The main work of the evening will be Mozart's very lively and tuneful early piano concerto No. 14 in E flat; the soloist will be Karl Lutchmayer, a Goan Brit who is a professor at the Trinity College of Music in London. We will also be playing Mozart's rousing Serenata Notturna for four string soloists and string ensemble. (I use the term rousing because, while one expects the normal serenade to be a quiet, romantic song that a lovestruck swain (are there still swains around, or are there only young fellows these days?) would softly croon beneath a loved one's window, in this particular serenade Mozart has the soloists cooing like lovebirds, while the rest of the group comes up with a boisterous response every time. The concert will end with a couple of surprise pieces that will fortunately be of very short duration. So do come in with a group of as many friends and relatives as you can put together, and if classical music is not something you or your friends would waste an evening on, send me your enemies instead.

BUT MY………. A man (JuzManel) walked into a Therapist's (Dr. Leitao) office looking very depressed:- JuzManel: Doctor, you have got to help me. I can't go on like this. Dr. Leitao: (inquired) What's the problem? JuzManel: Well, I am 37 years old and I still have no luck with the ladies. No matter how hard I try, I just seem to scare them away. Dr. Leitao: My friend, this is not a serious problem. You just need to work on your self-esteem. Each morning, I want you to get up and run to the bathroom mirror. Tell yourself that you are a good person, a fun person, and an attractive person. But say it with real conviction. Within a week you will have women buzzing all around you. JuzManelseemed content with Dr. Leitao’sadvice and walked out of the office a bit excited. Seven weeks later he returned with the same downtrodden expression on his face: Dr. Leitao: Did my advice work? JuzManel: It worked alright. For the past several weeks I have enjoyed some of the best moments in my life with the most fabulous looking women. Dr. Leitao: So, what's your problem? JuzManel: I don't have a problem, but…. [Goanet] AAP names candidates for the two LS seats in Goa (The Hindu)
AAP names candidates for the two LS seats in Goa Dr. Dattaram Desai will contest the north Goa seat, while Ms. Swati Kerkar has been nominated for the election in south Goa. While announcing its candidates for both the Parliamentary constituencies in Goa for the coming polls, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), also declared its unambiguous stand on Goa mining issue, opposing private sector mining in the State and demanding action against all those who were hitherto involved in illegal mining. The party declared the names of Dr. Dattaram Desai for north and Ms. Swati Kerkar for south. Both are environmental and social activists and were present at a press conference at the AAP Goa office here on Wednesday. Both openly declared that the AAP will not accept any election money from mining companies in Goa. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party was way ahead in declaring its candidates. It has named Law Commission chairman Narendra Sawaikar for south Goa and three-time MP of the BJP Sripad Naik for the north Goa seat. Both are staunch cadre-based men of the BJP. With its alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party tottering, the Congress is scheduled to finalise its candidates in Delhi on Wednesday late evening for the Lok Sabha election which is scheduled for April 12. On Wednesday, *AAP further stated that iron ore mining in Goa should be undertaken by the State-owned body and openly opposed mining that was left to the benefit of a few rich families. Money from this State resource must be utilized for the benefit of the people through a special permanent fund, it said. * *On illegal mining, which led to the prevailing mining ban following an interim order of the Supreme Court, the AAP declared that proceeds from the sale of illegally extracted ore e-auctions should be set aside to create a 'one-time' Rehabilitation Fund and utilised to provide relief to all mining dependents.* *AAP's Oscar Rebello hailed NGOs like Goa Foundation and others which are relentlessly fighting the illegal mining as real heroes who struggle to save Goa from complete disaster. The AAP vowed to stand by these NGOs, activists and by all the marginalized sections of Goan society including all mining dependent stakeholders who suffered in illegal mining and consequent mining ban. * Mr. Nilkant Gawas, president of All Goa Truck-Owners' Association backed AAP's stand.

[Goanet] NEED FOR A SAFE DISTANCE BETWEEN JUDGES AND LAWYERS
Despite there being a very clear and categorical diktat by the Supreme Court of India that Judges should not socialize with advocates, there seems no rigorous compliance of this very salutary prescription. Official tea parties within the Court premises may be acceptable. But highly spirited parties, hosted elsewhere could be a potential avenue for Advocates to creep and cultivate convenient relations with Judges. It can also lead to funny, embarrassing and demeaning situations at times. The contact between Advocates and Judges should be restricted to the Court room. This would go a long way in attempting to ensure an independent, unprejudiced, free and fair Judiciary. Temples of Justice should be clean, unbiased and pure. Advocates and more particularly those Senior mascots should desist in organizing and promoting dinners for Judges. A Judge is judged in dispensing Justice freely fearlessly. No late night wining dining should be a bait to swing a judgment in favour of those organisers and dinner fund raisers. A good Judge should strictly adhere to that Hippocratic Oath. There should be a total bar on lunches or dinners being hosted for Judges by Advocates. There should be no exception whatsoever to this cardinal rule. Andrew Jackson the 7th President of the United State of America had so rightly said All the rights secured to the citizens under the Constitution are worth nothing, and a mere bubble, except guaranteed to them by an independent and virtuous Judiciary. Re: [Goanet] Misinformation of the radiation from mobile towers
Involved in this topic: 1: the stalled/stopped' construction of the mobile tower in Saligao. 2: the 'expert' Prof. Girish Kumar and his PPT presentation. 3: the concerns of Salgaocars (the residents of Saligao). 4: third parties with or without vested interests. I submit that the MAIN deciders in this matter should be the Salgaocars. It is they who have the fear (whether justified or not). It is they who will have to face the consequences (if any) of any radiation which is emitted by the towers. Present information suggests that cell phone technology is SAFE. But this information is of zero comfort to those are concerned. Besides, vested interest have aggressively promoted nuclear power plants (Sellafield) and certain medications like thalidomide in pregnancy and more recently VIOXX. The experts' report commissioned by the Allahabad High Court (and referred to by Gerard Delaney) indicates that there is No CONCLUSIVE Evidence that cell tower radiation is harmful. http://www.deccanherald.com/content/388471/radiation-fears-mobile-towers-unfounded.html I am particularly concerned that experts changed the wording in the report from No Evidence to No CONCLUSIVE Evidence Even though I am NOT an expert on much esp this high level stuff, I took note of the following from Gerard Delaney: I had even explained that the average frequency of light is one million times greater than that of microwave radiation. Thus it is ridiculous to be afraid of microwave radiation and not of visible light radiation which is one million times stronger!' http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2014-March/238585.html Ridiculous as fear is and can be, I believe that Salgaocars have a right NOT to want anything in their neighbourhood, they are fearful of. jc
[Goanet] Misinformation of the radiation from mobile towers
What do we do about this mon ami? One cannot (specially a qualified medical doctor) in no terms assure there cannot be harmful effects when there is no proof. Just as for us doctors it is ethics not to guarantee that there will not be side effects to any medication. http://www.cell-phone-radiation.com/news/story.aspx?id=9#.UyGTbhBsv1M An article released in the Daily Telegraph today, 7th March 2014 explains that a recent Council of Europe committee has concluded that immediate action is required to protect children after ruling that new technologies do ‘potentially’ have harmful effects on humans. Dear Prof. Kumar, Can you please refer me to any peer-reviewed research paper(s) in a reputed scientific journal that substantiate(s) your claims about effects of low power microwave radiation, and the physical and biological mechanisms involved. As a neuroscientist, I have scoured through the medical and biological literature and consulted with a world-renowned neuroscientist who served on a U.S. National Institutes of Health committee to examine this question in the 1990s. Neither he, nor the committee, nor I have found anything that unequivocally supports your claims. When 6 of the leaders had met in my (Gerard Delaney's) house after the Lourdes convent program, I had clearly explained to them how this Prof. Girish Kumar was using his position to create fear in the minds of the public about the radiation and thereby helping his daughter's business of selling meters to measure radiation and shields for it. [Goanet] Reading - Feisty heroines of Literature
Growing up I admired Anne Shirley of Green Gables - the red head with a definite mind of her own. She questions religious faith and hypocritical rituals. If now we are talking of young spunky girls, not to mention Pippi Longstocking would be sacrilege. The most independent of characters, battles day to day encounters with superhuman strength. And Matilda of Roald Dhal fame , a child prodigy - who has devoured each and every book in the adult section before she is ten. If we were to shift the narrative from fictional to real life women who live in our societies and create such colossal feminine characters then Maya Angelo, Alice Walker, Anita Desai would take the lead. Anita Desai is unique in portraying a wide gamut of Indian women in her novels. What really struck me was that in one of her interviews, she candidly admitted that she loved her writing passion and would yearn for time to herself away from her responsibilities of family life and children - to return to her first love - WRITING ; very akin to Virginia Woolf's - a room of one's own. If you are attracted to some people and characters, it is an indication of the fact that you harbor some of their characteristics and aspire to be even more like them. Well, if that holds true and you admire these maverick heroines, come be part of the book reading 'Feisty Heroines in Literature' at ICG on 15th March, 2014, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. The session entails book readings, movie excerpts, power point presentation and thought provoking questions on evolution of women to feisty characters. Re: [Goanet] cell tower radiation hazards - coverage in Goa
Dear Mr Stephan Dias I was quite surprised by your comment funny uneducated guys referring to Mr Gerard Delaney and Mr Santosh Herlekar. I do not know you personally. What I do know, is that neither do you know the above two gentlemen personally, nor did you take the trouble of finding out about them before you made such a comment on a public forum. From the mails subsequently sent by Mr Santosh, I gather that he is a neuroscientist. A simple Google search on him verified that he is a PHD in the same in a leading Texas college. You will not find much information about my father Gerard Delaney on the net as he tends to maintain a low profile. Allow me to bring you up to speed on the same. My father is a former Gold medalist in Physics from IIT Powai. He joined NIO briefly for a year before settling for a more fulfilling job in teaching Physics in Goa. Just last year he retired from a 35 year active service, 16 of them spent as the Principal of Shri Shantadurga HSS in Bicholim, Goa. He has also to his credit co-authored a book on physics which incidentally is being used as one of the textbooks being taught to all HSS science students. He is still an active board member on the association of physics teachers. His list of achievements are much more, but I think you will agree with me that he is not as a funny uneducated guy as you thought. *An apology from you for these comments made in bad taste will be appreciated.* kind regards Ashley --- Group TenPlus Keep Goa E-waste free!! contact us now to know what YOU can do!www.facebook.com/ewastegoawww.grouptenplus.com Abreovaddo, Saligao, Bardez, Goa. [Goanet] selecting candidates
Candidates selected for elections The major political parties have once again named the candidates with a baggage. The only difference is justifications that such candidates are not charged, convicted or FIR is filed against them. Hence they are pure and undefiled and it is fair and just to consider their candidature. Major political, National or regional parties have host of criminal, declared cases against them pending in the courts. The long period of delivery of justice due to delays, postponement , indirect influence and interference of political parties in power, Fortunately the latest directive of finalisation of all cases within one year, may address the problem of in ordinate delays to some extent For too long the elected representatives have professed more faith in people's court, then the legal justice system, which allowed them long rope due to delays and thus remain un convicted All the tall talk ,by all major parties to route out corruption and route out the criminals is a hogwash. Fortunately to day the electronic and print media are laying thread bare the double standards of political parties, The educational level of the youth does not make them swallow all the propaganda let loose by the parties. In fact the monopoly of Govt. propaganda is no more the only news available to the public The vast number of news agencies, papers, publications, social media are sources to shift the chaff from the wheat Be it the congress, BJP, SP.BSP, they feed on the criminals, with muscle and money power for their survival and an opportunity to Govern, Nothing matters to any political parties, except win ability at all costs and circumstances, Hence ethics, conscience, propriety, morality are no guidelines to decide the choice of candidates. It is the party that mattered years ago and the credentials of the candidates were non est, as the party was the main considerations. Even now the parties are forcing their illegitimate choices on the elctorate, thinking they know better and openly defying and daring voters to fall in line. In the administration of justice the pliable police, CBI and independent Judiciary are all dependent on the Govt, for their very sustenance .Hence the Govt used these organs to feather their own nest and interests and get rid of uncomfortable. Recent bold stands and stances adopted by the executive even in some rare, isolated cases have been significant, The frequent transfers even with minimum tenure of service advocated , have been flouted by the legislative with impunity, arguing their right and prerogative to administer and transfers without being questioned or accountable At least the NOTA option has been agreed after much debate and procrastination by the politicians. It may not change the results as to the winners, with no provision for re election. After all it is the voters ,who will exercise their franchise to elect the candidates with all their gory past. The blame to elect the tainted representatives, must lie squarely on the shoulders of the electorate In a large ,democratic country , where the literacy is woefully low, such exercise of power is not without reasonable flaws of judgements. The poor , marginalised, uneducated are tempted and swayed by bribes, threats and promises. Therefore the outcome of the elections are stamped with authority, purity and fairness to legitimise the process Whether all the voters will exercise their rights with ultimate care and caution will have to wait and see, There is hope and aspirations that young , female, educated and informed, first time voters will tilt the balance and show the door to the corrupt, criminals, septuagenarians and octogenarians, limpets in politics and thus usher in new India of their dreams Nelson Lopes Chinchinim

[Goanet] CM NEEDS TO GET THE PRIORITIES RIGHT
The fiscal priority of any sensible and prudent government should be to pay its staff salaries abidingly on the 1st of every month. A government which fails to do this shows signs and symptoms of bad governance. The Public Prosecutors and Assistant Public Prosecutors in South Goa have not been paid since January. This is the sordid tale in many other departments too. How does this government expect the staff and their families to survive? We have just witnessed a very pompous Carnival and there will soon be an equally colorful Shigmo. A sign of very awful governance, when the State sponsors fun and frolic while its coffers are empty. This government has been on a borrowing spree. How long will it be able to sustain such lavish spending? We all know that the condition of the exchequer is very precarious. Despite this the government has been squandering money on wrong and skewed priorities. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar should lying to us that all is well, despite the State being in a downright debt trap.
