[Goanet-News] OBITUARY: Fr Vivian Lobo, SJ -- accomplished teacher, good administrator
By Miguel Braganza The sad news is that Fr. Vivian Lobo SJ passed away last night after a brief illness. He was hospitalized at Vision Hospital, Duler Mapusa, in .November, 2013 because of high urea in the blood and discharged after undergoing dialysis. He was recuperating at the Jesuit Community in St. Britto, Mapusa. Hailing from the village of Siolim, Fr. Vivian Lobo SJ was an accomplished teacher and a good administrator. A good part of the English I write is thanks to his grooming at St. Britto High School in the early and mid-1970s when he was my teacher. He was the Principal at Loyola High School Junior College, Pune, from 1986 to 1990 and thereafter at Loyola High School, Margao, till 2007, when Fr. Willaim Rodrigues SJ took over and he remained there as the Rector. May his soul rest in peace. The funeral cortege will leave the Priests' Residence, St. Britto High School, Mapusa at 3.45 P.M. for the Eucharistic celebration at St. Jerome's Church, Mapusa, follwed by the final rites. [Goanet-News] DEBATE: BJP deceitful about protecting land, Portuguese nationality (Eduardo Faleiro)
From Eduardo Faleiro lokseva...@gmail.com The BJP released yesterday its local manifesto for the ensuing Lok Sabha elections. This manifesto contains a series of deceitful promises intended to mislead and misguide the voters. It promises grant of special Status for the protection and conservation of land in Goa by amending Article 371 of the Constitution of India. This assurance can only be given by a national manifesto and not by a local manifesto. In any case, such a constitutional amendment is not necessary at all. Under the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution, every State Government has the required powers for protection and conservation of land within its jurisdiction. This is provided in the State List as well as in the Concurrent List of the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution. In furtherance of these powers and without seeking any amendment of Article 371, Uttarakhand enacted its Land Reforms Act 2003 which restricts purchase of land by outsiders. The State of Himachal Pradesh Tenancy and Land Reforms Act, 1972, prohibits non-agriculturists from purchasing any agricultural land in the State. The BJP manifesto released yesterday also promises to solve the difficulties created by registration of birth of Goans in Portugal. Sometime ago, I met in New Delhi the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Ramachandran Mullappally, who is in charge of the Foreigners Division in the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Minister Mr Mullappally had held a public meeting cum interactive session in Kerala on January 30 last on questions relating to citizenship and solved on the spot many problems placed before him on that occasion. There are several persons in Kerala who had acquired Pakistani citizenship in order to work in Pakistan and now face problems like those faced by Goans who acquired Portuguese nationality. I requested the Minister to hold a similar meeting cum interactive session in Goa and he agreed to do so. I then requested the State Government to make the necessary arrangements for this meeting. The State Government however failed to organize this meeting and thereby caused great harm to the cause of Goans who have registered their birth in Portugal. A vote for the Indian National Congress is the only option at the ensuing Lok Sabha elections. Narendra Modi presided over the worst communal riots that this country has ever witnessed. In 2002, the then Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpyee described as barbaric and inhuman the Godhra and post Godhra events and wanted Shri Modi removed from the Chief Ministership of Gujarat. The concept of secularism is linked inextricably with Indian democracy and one cannot exist without the other.
[Goanet] THE BJP GAME PLAN WILL JUST NOT WORK
It is now known to all that Churchill Alemao along with Shalom Sardinha in the South and Dayanand Narvekar in the North have been propped up and fielded by Manohar Parrikar to split the Anti BJP votes. This BJP game plan will just not work as the common man in Goa has become politically astute. After Micky Pacheco and Caitu D'Silva, Manohar Parrikar's latest altar boy Mauvin Godinho has all the credentials to be Chief Economic Advisor in Corruption after the CM himself making a U turn on that fake promise of Zero tolerance to Corruption. It may be recalled that by an order dated 26th October 2007 then Bombay High Court at Goa Justice Nelson Britto had directed framing of charges against Mauvin Godinho under Section 13(1) (d) (i) and (iii) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 read with Section 120B of the Indian Penal Code in connection with the the muiti crore Power scam case. Justice Nelson Britto had in his order noted that the charges against Mauvin Godinho came to be investigated and charge sheet filed based on a complaint filed by Manohar Parrikar and that it appeared that the case took different turns depending upon which Government was in power. Mauvin Godinho in 2007 moved the Supreme Court and got a stay of the proceedings of the corruption case against him. The matter has been lingering in the Supreme Court. Mauvin Godinho may be now day dreaming that by dancing to Manohar Parrikar's tunes he will bail him out. But the long arm of the law may soon catch up with Mauvin Godinho whose tale has been from rags to riches. Aires Rodrigues T1 - B30, Ribandar Retreat Ribandar - Goa - 403006 Mobile: 9822684372

Santosh Helekar:I like to consult contemporary or historical writings for facts about our history. I will retrieve from what I have read in the past the names and/or designations of public officials who were reported to be corrupt and crooked in the Portuguese administration when I have some free time later. jc: Excellent step == Santosh Helekar:: But asking to substantiate a factual statement by Roland is not asking to prove a negative. All he has to do is tell us where he got that factual information from. jc: Asking Roland to provide factual information about the absence of corruption during the Portuguese regime (esp the last few decades of their regime) in Goa = asking him to prove the negative. == Santosh Helekar:: Given the fact that there was no freedom of the press in Goa during the Portuguese rule, most of the claims made by lay people are hearsay, and for the most part, wrong. jc: This is a specious method of arguing a point. There was ALL kinds of information about Goa available in Bombay, some accurate some invented. Did any information of civil service corruption turn up in Bombay? Did any information of that corruption turn up on Dec 20, 1961 or thereafter? The civil service was mainly Goan. They did not go anywhere. Anybody complained about corruption involving those Goan civil servants? Some might still be alive. Check with them na! BTW: I wonder if my reference to 'Goans' was construed appropriately. == Santosh Helekar: As for Josebab's understanding below, we know very well that in the post-Portuguese Goa many of the administrative officials who are known to be crooked and corrupt are also Goans, jc: Is it or Is it not because the SYSTEM (that Roland was referring to) did not tolerate corruption ? I am not really up to date with the events of 2014. Personally, I have no evidence at hand to state that any officials are corrupt in 2014. But, for now, I will accept Santoshbab's view on matters as they exist in 2014. He may wish to opine IF the present SYSTEM tolerates corruption. === Santosh Helekar: My observation has been that corruption and crookedness does not have anything do with education, race or religion. jc: I almost agree. My belief is that it was the SYSTEM which played an important positive or negative role...along with the Culture of Zhalacch Pahije and Chalta hai. jc
[Goanet] Incubator For Political Crooks?
The Salazar system did not allow the crookery. Your bharat systems is all over the place. Now a genocidist is on the verge of becoming the Prime Minister. BC How is Roland sure that there were no crooks in Portuguese administration, and when? What system did not allow it? Cheers, Santosh
Re: [Goanet] Incubator For Political Crooks?
This one is hilarious. The topic is political crooks? Political crooks? Well, the entire Portuguese colonial system was set up for only one purpose i.e. to harvest the wealth of Goa and transfer it to Portugal. The Portuguese did this well for 450 years. Now someone claims this is not a politically crooked system? Well, then I guess I have to raise my hat to the Portuguese education system in Goa. 50 years after they were kicked out, people still are of the opinion that Salazar's regime in Goa comprised of benevolent, upstanding young men whose job was to spread political freedom in Goa. Mervyn BTW, I guess it is a real challenge today to decide whom to vote for when one candidate is a crook and the other is not? From: roland.francis roland.fran...@ymail.com To: Goa's premiere mailing list, estb. 1994! goanet@lists.goanet.org Sent: Thursday, April 3, 2014 10:57:01 PM Subject: [Goanet] Incubator For Political Crooks? A very recent Goa news item says that one-third of Goa candidates have criminal records. I am not anti Indian or pro Portuguese or anything of the sort but knowing that in Potuguese Goa there was no crook in the administration (the system just didn't allow it) and now learning that fully one third of Goan politicians are crooks, a result of the Indian dispensation, one is tempted to ask VMinGoa or his other avatar VMdeMalar whether better Indian education or inferior Potuguese education had anything to do with this? [Goanet] Bombay Suburban Real Estate
Here are some mind boggling figures: A 622 sq ft flat in Khar a suburb of Bombay, almost but not quite as tony as Bandra, was just sold for USD 1.250 million equivalent. The rate sold was Rs.1.2 lakh per sq ft. The calculation is: 622 x 120,000 ÷ 59.7 (to the USD) The current rate for a sq foot in Khar is Rs.40,000. Then why was Rs.120,000 paid instead of the going rate of 40,000 in this case? Simple. The building will be redeveloped (RD) on the basis of additional FSI alloted to it and that flatowner would have got three times the area he now has. Make the calculation and you will get the same $1.2 million we arrived at previously but with the new sq footage (622x3x40,000÷59.7=$1.250 million) So why is the buyer paying future redevelopment value today, before redevelopment? Simple again. He expects the rate to go up by the time RD is completed to much more than 40,000. That's the minor part. What he knows is that with bribes and such on the part of the redeveloper, the buyer will land up with as much as five times the sq footage instead of three. That's how the Bombay real estate game is played. The current prurchase nets the municipality Rs 32 lakhs in transfer fees. Realistically about 5 of that will be used for the city and the other 27 will be stuffed into pockets of municipal officers, politicians, political parties, police and extorting criminal gangs. This is one flat. Large parts of Bombay are being redeveloped with millions of flats involved. Any questions now on how people in Bombay are loaded. All on the backs of flatbuyers who themselves have to be similarly loaded to afford such prices. Roland. Toronto. Sent from Samsung Mobile
[Goanet] Fwd: Fw: Fwd: Please read circulate this important message to all those in the community that you know
I received this email message from one of the persons who attended the talk by Fr Cedric Prakash. It appears a foretaste of things to come. Regards, Marshall Attended a talk by Fr. Cedric Prakash of Gujaratorganised by the Catholic.Sabha. Was surprised that the civil rights activist [who is normally a fiery speaker] .was so subdued and had wrapped his facts in Gospel stories ! Learned later that the BJP the RSS had on the previous day brought a delegation to the Parish priest pf Mount Carmel's Church asking HOW he could have a political speech in a religious area. They wanted the talk to be cancelled. Finally it seems it was held with plain clothes police all around BJP moles, and EC memembers planted in the audience !! I suppose Fr.Prakash did not want the Parish Priest to get into trouble deliberately toned down his message.[If this could happen before the perty is in power imagine what will happen later.] However several facts did seep through..The 3 'C's.That one needs to have Courage...follow one's Conscience guard the Constitution. He said that The avowed aim of the BJP in Gujarat is to Change the Constitution!! In answer to a Q he said that corruption in Gujarat was bigger than corruption anywhere else but had been institutionalised [We have the BMC road and Building depts. to corroborate that !] He also detailed the draconian Right to Religion Act...which is really a perversion of freedom. One important thought that came from the Catholic Sabha was ...that our people need to meet discuss the elections in whichever small groups or Fora they are involved.. SCCs ,even in their homes..since it is difficult to have public meetings in this climate. After the meeting [in a small group] a few Bandra people said they were enamoured by the AAP wanted to give them a chance.Others [and I think they are right] said that ,,THAT was exactly what the BJP is hoping for ...because the AAP will only leach/siphon votes from the Congre improve the BJPs chance of winning. So this time only, inspite of all their disgraceful performance these last few years we [the Christians] need to Vote for the Congress just to keep the BJP++ from getting the two third majority they want to change the Fundamental Rights of the Constitution. They reminded us that this was really the rabid Hindu RSS that we were voting to power...and all our schools churches ,LANDS, religious gatherings and religious freedom were in grave danger. Finally we had to ensure that Eveybody voted. I am sending this to those who I think have the capacity to spread this message which is vital for the community. I have done my bit..Please use this info to spread awareness to every one you know.

Two others admitted to burning the human remains as part of their waste-to-energy plants. Health Minister and Conservative Member of Parliament, Dr. Dan Poulter, decried the practice as totally unacceptable. *While the vast majority of hospitals are acting in the appropriate way, that must be the case for all hospitals and the Human Tissue Authority has now been asked to ensure that it acts on this issue without delay, Poulter said in The Telegraph.* In response to the Channel 4 report, the U.K. Department of Health banned the practice on Sunday. Twenty-seven NHS trusts incinerated at least 15,500 fetal remains over the past two years and parents were often not consulted about the hospital's intentions for the baby remains, the Channel 4 report also claims. In at least one hospital, Addenbrooke's in Cambridge, administrators informed nearly 800 mothers that the remains of their miscarried or aborted babies had been cremated. While Ipswich Hospital cremates the remains of miscarried and aborted babies, it reportedly still incinerated 1,101 fetal remains over the past two years, because it burns the waste from other hospitals that had not maintained a similiar policy. Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust denied that it had done anything with fetal remains that had not been previously discussed with parents both verbally and in writing. The parents are given exactly the same choice on the disposal of fetal remains as for a stillborn child and their personal wishes are respected, it said. Drew Belsky, a spokesperson for the pro-life activist group Live Action, called the news horrifying. *There's really not that much more to say about this than 'Soylent Green is people.' We're finding ourselves in a society, whether [people] are alive or dead are being used as resource for the benefit of others. This completely flies in the face of how we're supposed to treat people, Belsky told The Christian Post. There is an inherent dignity to every human being that we are finding just completely trampled in many cases, but especially in the cases of our weakest brothers and sisters who are the pre-born children. Whether they are miscarried or aborted -- they are people and we have to treat them that way.* Belsky added that a recent conversation with a libertarian on Twitter underscored to him the need for society to take human life more seriously. He gave me the argument that 'How can these embryos be people? It's not like you're giving them funerals or anything,' Belsky relayed. It occurs to me that it's a truly warped sense of morality when you are determining who is and isn't a human being based on who gets funerals. When stories like this come out, when aborted babies get incinerated to provide heat for other people, it starts to look like a really depraved sort of ideology on the meaning of human dignity is taking root and we really have to work hard, every single one of us, to make sure that stops happening. - christian post Tags:
[Goanet] OBITUARY: Fr Vivian Lobo, SJ -- accomplished teacher, good administrator
[Goanet] DEBATE: BJP deceitful about protecting land, Portuguese nationality (Eduardo Faleiro)
[Goanet] Goanet should publish this letter addressed to Floriano, if Goanet approves it, because this is a serious issue.
Dear Floriano, I am just writing after the response from your letter on Goanet The news open up by you , is really sad to hear. One way I am convinced what you say, but it is really too late and nothing can be done as his body is finished. What about his wife Alina, she does not have her say in this? Why she is MUM? I do not know anything internal stories of their family as I have no connections. Earlier when he was young and teacher at Don Bosco I used to be with him almost every alternate day and going for a simple tea in one restaurant , as we had no much money. That was after 1970's. It was at the side of Shalimar Hotel, Panjim that is between Sousa Paul and Shalimar Hotel , there was a restaurant which we used to frequent often and talk about politics. I was completely zero in politics. I had many times taken him to our NIO where I was working and he participated in seminars etc. He had one more of his friend and my colleague called Agnelo Fernandes, a clerk from NIO who was very friendly with him. So the discussion was mostly on Ramponkars, and later DuPond etc. After that I lost touch of him, once he became a political giant. I have no contact with his wife (Alina) at all as he never showed or introduced me to her. Only I remember one thing that when he called me up and said that he is going to join BJP. I was in Pune at that time, but I advised him why are you joining BJP? and he said that Congress are rogues and after joining BJP he said that he will put the house of Goans in order. Before that I met Matanhy at the funeral of Dr. Wilfred Mesquita's father at their residence at Chicalim. After that I had no contacts of him. I left that job to him entering into BJP and also I left him completely. I come to know from you now, that there was some fishy thing, of his untimely death. If that is true , I must tell you that this needs to be investigated or are you putting his family with more embarrassing questions? This is becoming a serious problem. Is it just because of MOPA that his death's reason is surfacing? This should have been done much earlier that is just after his death or on the day of death. And conducted the post mortem as you say. Who will listen to your stories now? Although it may be true but you may fall into problem, if it is goes wrong. Please make sure what you talking, Sir. Ask Dr.Oscar who was there at the time of death I believe. It seems Matanhy was admitted in that Hospital before his death. I have no idea what was going on those days. Dumo, President and Savio Rodrigues, Secretary President [Youth Affairs], the Candidate for LS Elections from South Goa, the Goa Su-Raj Party's General Secretary and founding President Floriano Lobo has gone on record to say that the BJP could revive the previously shelved MOPA airport project only by eliminating Matanhy Saldanha from the scene as a Minister in the Manohar Parrikar cabinet who was acutely against MOPA. Explaining that he was a long-time colleague activist of Matanhy Saldanha on issues like MOPA, SEZ, CRZ, Special Status, etc, Floriano Lobo recounted many a public platforms he shared with Matanhy Saldanha against MOPA airport and stressed that Matanhy was against both, the illegal occupation of the Goa's Civilian airport, Dabolim by the Indian Navy, and the new greenfield MOPA airport project. He said that Matanhy was a proud GOAN, rooted for GOA, who only succumbed to the pressures of joining the BJP because he hated the CONGRESS through his entire being, thus depriving himself the tag of being one of the regional icons of Goa in the fag end of his political carrier. Floriano Lobo further said that Matanhy's resolve as Environment and Forest Minister in the BJP cabinet not to allow any mining activity in forest/wild-life sanctuaries as told by him to the HINDU, barely 3 days before he died, and his resolve that the Navy should move to Sea Bird, Karwar, and MOPA be scrapped was the last straw that broke his back and earned him his death sentence. In the scheme of things, Floriano said, crores of rupees of funding from the mining and Mopa lobies that made the BJP victorious in the 2012 Assembly elections, Matanhy Saldanha's love for Goa was too insignificant and he could be dispensed with for a greater cause of the BJP in Goa. Floriano Lobo also said that Manohar Parrikar had the gall to tell the Legislative Assembly that Matanhy Saldanha had

[Goanet] Technology... where it matters! From Vasco da Gama to Montreal
These two youngsters from a prominent Goa-based educational institution are headed to Montreal. Anyone there wanting to link up with them? http://yourstory.com/2014/02/braille-learning-device/ 20-year-olds create an innovative Braille learning device, to demo at PyCon 2014 in Montreal this April Aditya Bhushan Dwivedi | February 07, 2014 at 3:51 pm 552 Aman Srivastav and Sanskriti Dawle, The Brains behind Project Mudra Give an engineer a tool and he will work wonders. This is what happened when Sanskriti Dawle and Aman Srivastav, second year students at BITS Goa, came across Raspberry Pi (a credit card sized computer) during a workshop. It didn't excite them at first. Typing code to make lights glow, what's the big deal, said Sanskriti. However, as Aman continued playing around with the device he saw a lot of possibilities. It was during a random conversation that they came up with the idea of a 'Braille Dicta-Teacher', a device to make learning Braille easier for the visually challenged. The Device is under wraps as it will be unveiled at PyCon 2014 in Montreal in April. There are over 285 million visually challenged people in the world, and even in a developed country like the US less than 10 percent of the visually challenged people are literate. The scenario in India is much worse. To counter this, Sanskriti and Aman started Project Mudra. They have developed a device which converts voice input to Braille characters using Google's speech API and hardware using Raspberry Pi. The device works in three different modes - Browse mode, Auto mode and Exam mode. The concept diagram of the Device, from speech to Braille Browse mode - In the browse mode, user speech input is converted into tactile Braille output. This enables users to speak out the words they want converted into Braille thus learning at their own pace and comfort. Auto Mode - The Auto mode runs a predetermined speech sequence and converts it into a tactile output. This is generally suited best for memorization and disciplined learning. It reads through all the English alphabets and numbers sequentially and the Braille output for each of them is generated synchronously along with the audio output. Exam Mode - Exam mode tests the user recall based on his ability to guess the correct letter in the Braille interface and gives the answer as speech output. Here a random letter is chosen in Braille script and the user is prompted by the speech input for the respective letter. Then the user's input is checked against the database and the correct answer is revealed. Learning ABC is the first step to literacy in any language, says Sanskriti. And this is what they are trying to accomplish for the visually challenged. At present, Aman and Sanskriti are working on improving the device to make it handy. They will unveil it in PyCon 2014 in Montreal in April. ... read more on yourstory.com -- FN Phone +91-832-2409490 Mobile +91-9822122436 Blog: http://goabooks.wordpress.com
