Re: [Goanet] Subject: Goa Outgrowing Postcolonialism: a review
Dear Augusto, The point I made is loud and clear in what I wrote. That the author used personal anecdotes to good effect. Have you read the book? I am not aware that the author (Teotonio R. de Souza) suffers from a “proclivity for toadying up to the Saraswats, the Catholic ones at any rate". There is no hint of any such proclivity in the book under review. Are you, Augusto, by any chance, the butt of that anecdote? Best, v From: augusto pinto [mailto:pinto...@gmail.com] Sent: 05 October, 2014 7:58 PM To: goanet; Valmiki Faleiro Subject: Subject: [Goanet] Goa Outgrowing Postcolonialism: a review Valmiki Faleiro writes: "(Teotonio De Souza) uses personal anecdotes to good effect, as at pgs.132-133: *On a personal note, if [laureate Umberto] Eco had a motive for creating his blind librarian and naming him Jorge from Burgos, I too may have one for discovering a Goan avatar of [Edgar Allan] Poe’s hero in my native village of Moira. In a bid to make a mark as fiction writer, he dabbles in the pre-historic glories of the mahars, claiming that they have fallen from grace due to victimization by Saraswats! He may run for shelter if I choose to reveal that one of my first cousins, a Saraswat, was married in Church to a woman from Moira adopted by a mahar family. He may persist in his obsession, like someone who insisted in convincing me that Jesus was a Brahmin, because his cousin, John the Baptist lived on honey and low castes (read locusts).* I don't appreciate the point that Valmiki seems to be making. Does he agree with TS that merely because his cousin marries the adopted daughter of a Mahar, TS gets absolved of his proclivity for toadying up to the Saraswats, the Catholic ones at any rate? If this is what he thinks is " the Teotonio trademark of trustworthiness" I'm not impressed. During his recent visit to Goa at a meet organized by Goa Book Club I questioned TS as to the reason for his bias and he came up with the lame excuse that there were no sources and that I should take up the job of writing the history of the Mahars. I retorted that I was a mere storyteller and not a historian, and that historians seem to choose methodologies which suit their biases. Incidentally, TS is quite the typical Moidekar Bamon ganvkar: this breed is notorious for taking potshots at people without having the courage to name names. Augusto

[Goanet] WAS THERE ANY EFFECT FOR SWACHH BHARAT CAMPAIGN?
CLEAN AND GREEN GOA or SHOW PIECE SWACHH BHARAT CAMPAIGN? Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi has kicked off a campaign called “Swachh Bharat” across the country to clean up with the broom which we saw in our state following this campaign by our Chief Minister of Goa Mr. Manohar Parrikar, MLA’s, Ministers, Bureaucrats, Directors from Central and State Government including citizens and Panchayat bodies joining the mission on this 2nd October 2014 Gandhi Jayanti day. I have seen mostly people holding a special looking broom which was unusual kind of what is available in the market especially the CM and PM was seen using this broom with gloves. None of them were seen wearing masks. This shows there was no dust created while sweeping probably in that area where this Swachh Bharat campaign kicked off. Why only for a one Day this mission was required to be done? It could be continued on all Sat. and Holidays for few hours but not during office hours. Wherever I have made my contacts with my friends I was told that this mission was just a “show piece” or " humbug" and people could have cleaned and devoted this mission to clean up their own houses rather than public places. We have CCP and Panchayat workers to do the job as we pay taxes and may be they could have hired more workers for this mission as a special case. Stephen Dias D.Paula

[Goanet] Goa Outgrowing Postcolonialism - Cover Design
Hi folks One cannot judge a book by its cover and as I have yet to read the book, I am therefore going to give you my observations about the cover. We live in a world of colours, shapes, signs and text to communicate. The cover brings to mind a bebdo who is faced with steps going up and steps going down and not being able to choose, he ends up in a State of Confusion, going nowhere mirroring our community today. The colours of the stairs may represent the Portuguese colours but interestingly a lot of countries that once flew the Portuguese flag, now fly a flag of their own. Thankfully Professor Dr.Teotonio R. de Souza had the good sense not to use "traffic lights" on his book cover, as it is in Goa we have traffic lights with no bulbs. Drivers use road markings as decorations. Even the electricity department at Colva has a street lamp post missing with the light bulb hanging from a water bottle. Wonder if this survived the recent monsoons or created a blackout. Speaking for myself and thanks to my parents for introducing me to Goa where I have made several trips in the last 50 years, I can confirm that Goa has progressed in most fields but still remains a backward state compared to the rest of India mainly due to sorpotelised people with peasant thinking linked to money. Many years ago, I attended an Expo in Lisbon where almost every democratic country was represented. One of the exhibitors was the Association of Portuguese speaking countries. I had a look around this stand and to my disappointment there was no mention of Goa at all. I also had an opportunity of visiting a preserved Portuguese wooden warship of the type that came to Goa and when I attended a book launch in 2012 in a red building opposite the Holy Rosary Church in Margao, I was surprised to find similar floor boards to that of the ship well designed and preserved. In conclusion: *Marriages, in this age of the Internet, available transport and the 'world being a global village', the Mandovi, Zuari or even the Sal are about as relevant in this matter as are the branches of the Indus ought to be. * The best effect on Genetics IMO, is the admixture of genes from as far away from home as possible. best jc

[Goanet] open defecation problems in India
OPEN India open defecation is rampant, wide spread habit also borne out of necessity and practice It is not poverty alone as many such poor households own puca units in U.P Bihar , TV sets , mobiles, which are a priority, besides rich farmers in Harayana and Punjab too use open defecation .Open defecation puts women , girls at risk of rapes, molestation and murders as they have to venture out only in the dark, but it is felt healthier to than having toilets at home and those with Govt , constructed facility do likewise O.D is due to no behavior change in the centuries old habit. Girls do not go to schools, because of lack of toilet facilities. Most of Govt run middle and primary schools have no toilets, though they are rigoursly enforced in private institutions. Hence it is an attitude problem to the use toilets. The costs of health, spreading of diseases, have impact on well being and personality. The society at large desires to end O.D because of pride, dignity, health, safety and hence the present focus must assure universal change in centuries old behaviourial change and attitudes. Then water provision and maintenance is another issue, judging by state of public pay toilets The statistics and Govt. intervention of subsidies, their misuse is alarming. India shamefully leads the world in OD with 600 millions every day, amounting to staggering 60% of OD in the world and more than Africa. The Central rural sanitation 1986-99 and total sanitation campaign( TSC) 1999-2012 and Nirmal Bharat Abyan (NBA) have not made perceptible dent too Rural toilets have increased by 10% to 31% and at this rate it will take 70 yrs plus. Govt .statstics show 68% toilets, but as usual due to huge corruption 60 million were nonexistent in 2011 census Instead of increasing porous subsidies. The Govt. could provide cheap material for constructions, target those who deceitfully release subsidies after false certification and enforce compulsory time bound toilets in all institutions whether private or Govt or aided. Govt. in false belief has raised subsidies from 10K to 15K to individual,35K to 54K for School,8K to 20K for Anganwadi , and 2 lakhs to 6 lakhs for community complex Nelson Lopes Chinchinim

Now the Goa Public Service Commission has selected Manohar Parrikar’s relative Mahesh Parrikar to the plumb Group B gazetted officer post as Civil cum Sub Registrar. There is no problem with relatives of Ministers aspiring for government jobs but it has to be strictly on merit. Was there nobody with better credentials than Kurupati Dwarkanath Row to occupy the very vital post as Chairman of the Goa Public Service Commission? Is Mahesh Parrikar the most outstanding candidate amongst the hundreds who applied for the post of Civil cum Sub Registrar? [Goanet] Growing man-animal conflict; Who’s to be blamed?
-- Samir Umarye The recent jackal attack on two minor boys at Maulinguem in Bicholim taluka seems to have opened a Pandora’s Box, with locals and animal lovers blaming each other for the growing conflict between man and wildlife in Bicholim and Sattari talukas. If a jackal has been tormenting residents at Maulinguem, other animals have been accused of a similar crime: macaques in Nanoda, bison at Keri (Sattari) and wild boars in Bicholim and Sattari talukas. The jackal attack at Maulinguem, which has shocked the village, took place in broad daylight when two boys – a 12-year-old and a 6-year-old – were attacked on their face and buttocks. The forest department immediately swung into action and Keri Range Forest Officer Paresh Porob later suggested that the female jackal may have had puppies with her and had become defensive after the two boys came in her way. While the actual incident is still unclear, what is increasingly clear is the growing man-animal hostility in the taluka. In neighbouring Nanora, the macaques have become such a common problem that families have been suffering heavy losses to their crops. One such aggrieved group, the Phadke family, has complained of prolonged losses since several years. “These macaques are a nuisance to everyone and there are about 30-40 of them in the area. They eat and throw down almost every coconut from the tree and they frequently come to the verandah of our house,” said Govind Phadke from Nanora. “We are helpless as these macaques can sense an air gun and disappear as soon as they spot us with an air gun, only to come back after some time. Even attempts to trap them in a cage have proved futile, as they are intelligent and hardly come close to the cage,” he added. At Keri in Sattari, there seem to be a ‘bigger’ problem in form of bison. Since the last three-four years, the bison and other wild animals have been entering nearby fields and The farmers had demanded solar fencing around Almo Dongor of Ravan and the deputation of forest guards to prevent the entry of wild animals at night. Unhappy over the apathy by authorities concerned to their grievances, residents from Ravan, Kelavade Colony, Ghoteli, Shiroli and surrounding areas staged a peaceful protest outside the panchayat office at Keri. Left with little option, the farmers have now decided to fence their own fields but have demanded a 100 per cent subsidy for the fence. Described as one of the worst predators of crops, wild boars are a common problem in Bicholim and Sattari talukas. “Many of the farmers, not just from my village but from almost every part of Bicholim and Sattari talukas, are suffering huge losses because of the wild boar. They have multiplied manifold and have ended up destroying almost every crop cultivated on the ground,” Vidhyadhar Raut from Mulgao told Herald. Animal lovers have claimed that animal incursions into habitations have largely taken place due to mistakes by humans. “We have not kept any place for these wild animals even in the jungle, so they have no other option but to enter our land,” justifies Animal Rescue Squad chief Amrut Singh. Singh, however, insists that all is not lost and that, humans and animals can still coexist within the same space. “The only way to avoid human-animal clashes is by bringing about an awareness among the people, demarcating boundaries and making everyone know how even these animals are important for the eco-system,” explains Singh.

[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 28th Sunday of the Year
26-Sep-2014 Dear Friend, Whenever we don't do thethings we are supposed to do we always have our excuses to justify our actions,to support our point of view, to hold on to whatever we are busy with andresist change. While these excuses may get us out of tight situations they canalso hinder us from growing and becoming the people we are called to be. In ourfaith commitment, while we know that God is infinitely patient, we cannot makeexcuses for our conversion; we have to respond to His call or be left behind.Have a joy-filled weekend! -Fr. Jude Sunday Ref: 28th Sun. “Youare invited, so you are worthy! Come, celebrate!” 12-Oct-2014Readings: Isaiah 25: 6-10; Phillip. 4: 12-14, 19-20; Mt. 22: 1-14; In the first reading,Isaiah proclaims the goodness of God, who is preparing a banquet for all hispeople on the holy mountain. The banquet symbolizes God's closeness, hisconcern and the celebration of final victory over sin, suffering and death. This feast is not exclusively for the Israelites but for all people. Goddesires to invite all people to his kingdom with no one excluded. The Lordcomes to bring consolation to those who are sorrowing, to bring solace to thosewho are hurting and to give new sight to those blinded by the disasters thatafflict them. The call of the Christian is the call to hope in the Lord, who isconcerned about everything that affects us, and will lead us to new joy andhope that comes from being with the Lord. WipingAway TearsThevenerable servant of God, Canon Cotolengo, when but a boy of five years, wasmeasuring with a cord one room after another. His mother rather confused, askedhim what he was trying to do. “Dear mother,” was the reply, “I want to see howmany beds can be placed in this house; when I grow up I should like to fill thewhole house with sick people.” A tear of emotion glistened in his mother’seyes. In 1832 he founded in Turin the ‘Little Asylum of Divine Providence’. Andtoday it is world famous. It shelters 5000 men and embraces within itsprecincts a church, a number of houses, terraces and courtyards. – God invitesus to get caught up with his desire for humanity and work with him to wipe awaytears from cheeks and to take away people’s shame. Like Canon Cotolengo, thereare some who respond to God’s call with passion and reach out to others torealize God’s vision for the human race.VimaDasan in ‘His Word Lives’ The Gospel parable tellsus that a king desires to celebrate the marriage feast for his son and so hesends out his messengers to summon all the guests. Those invited refuse tocome, thus insulting the king. The king is still patient with the guests andsends a second reminder but again those invited scorn the invitation and theymaltreat and kill the servants, which incenses the king who destroys them.Since the banquet is all set, the king now sends his messengers to inviteanyone whom they can find. And the servants went out into the streets andgathered all whom they found, both good and bad; so the banquet hall was filledwith guests. What is the point the Evangelist is trying to make through thisparable? Firstly salvation is centered in Christ; it is always God who takesthe initiative for salvation. We cannot do anything to start the process, faithis always a gift and it is through our faith that we are invited, as it were,to a royal banquet. If a VIP invited us to a very special occasion would wereject the invitation? Would we not think we were privileged ones to beinvited? Yet, when it is Jesus who invites us, we are indifferent to His call, and busy ourselves with other matters which we believe are more important.Secondly, the parable reminds us of the patience of God, who does not give upon us. The servants in the parable stand not only for the prophets but also forthe apostles and special messengers whom God sends into our lives to remind usof his call. God can call us through His word, through prayer, he can call usthrough the preaching, teaching and witnessing. He can call us through theleast expected of people. What is important is to heed his call when it comesand not to make excuses. He sent his only son and even when he was rejected and killed Goddid not abandon His people. God’s response to man’s infidelity and ingratitudeis unconditional love! How can I live withoutmy excuses?A middle-aged woman wentto a distant monastery for her first weekend retreat in many years. When shearrived at the guest house, one of the monks approached her and surprised herwith a brusque question. "Why not?" "That was the first thing hesaid," she relates. "He had never seen me before. I hadn't even saida word. “Why not?” he questioned. I knew he had me. After all he was theretreat master." I brought up excuses: "It was a long trip I'mtired... the kids... the people I work with... not enough time... I guess it'smy temperament." The retreat master took a long sword off the wall andgave it to
