[Goanet] NARENDRA MODI NEEDS TO WALK THE TALK
One wonders whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi is serious on his recent concern that the Drug menace is a national pain. In Goa while as the Leader of the Opposition Manohar Parrikar had consistently and vehemently opposed Casinos while branding them as a ‘social evil’ and had vowed to throw them out if he came to power. Manohar Parrikar had branded Casinos as dens of vice” and had even led an agitation to demand their closure. But in a dramatic U turn after coming to power on March 9th 2012 he allowed yet another Casino the monstrous ‘M.V. Horseshoe’ owned by Jaydev Mody the son-in-law of the politically well connected former Attorney General of India Soli Sorabjee. The BJP in Goa has since fallen in love with the Casino brigade which is now getting the government’s total patronage and profuse support. While the BJP is feasting and making merry with the abundant funds flowing from the Casinos, Goa has sadly become the country’s gambling hub with the allied vices of prostitution and the narcotics trade also flourishing by the day. So NaMo should walk the talk and end the Casino menace in Goa instead of continuing to fool the nation with all his empty rhetoric. *Do not try to keep us entertained with your 'Mann ki Baat', we would be content with some ‘**Sachi Baat’**. *Are you listening Mr. Prime Minister? [Goanet] Growing paddy into healthy red rice: a story from the field (Marie D'Souza, Aldona)
Marie D'Souza dsouza.ma...@gmail.com I want to share with you my experiences in growing paddy and then milling to white or brown rice. Earlier I bought rice in the market and never ever considered the process the farmer has to follow to finally give us the rice we eat, whether non-organic or organic; raw or parboiled, white or brown. Last year I grew organic paddy and after it was harvested, dried and winnowed I sold all of it except a sack I kept for my own use. Since in Bardez Taluka there is no mill that mills paddy to raw rice, I requested my neighbour to parboil and mill this one sack of paddy and I got parboiled white rice that required a little winnowing and sieving before it could be stored. This rice lasted me till the end of October (about one year). This year I decided to keep all my paddy after people said they were interested in organic parboiled rice, preferably brown. After harvesting, the paddy was dried thoroughly and then winnowed and stored. Parboiling started with a huge 'copper' pot kept on the fireplace, filled with paddy to the brim and then water added, to cover the paddy, before starting the fire. An experienced person then watched over the pot till the paddy reached a certain consistency. The paddy was removed and left to dry thoroughly in the sun. In the evening the paddy was spread in a shady and well aired place. It was then stirred three or four times daily, for six to eight days till the consistency was brittle. The parboiled paddy can be kept for several months without spoiling. When white rice is required,z most of the husk is ejected and the rice is gathered into the bin in the process of milling itself. Later, a little manual labour is required to winnow, sieve and pick out the paddy that is still mixed with the milled rice before it is ready to store or sell. When brown or red rice is required the husk separates but drops into the bin together with the rice. As a result, a lot of manual labour is required later to winnow away the husk, sieve the 'kanni' and pick out the paddy that is still mixed with the milled rice before it is ready to store or sell. (I have been told that brown rice preserves longer than white rice with getting weavils.) I am not sure whether the paddy that needed to be picked, that was mixed with the brown rice, was a lot because the mill I took it to needed attention and repairs or whether this is normal. The price for brown rice is probably higher not just because it is healthier but because of the increased manual labour involved. Finally, my organic Jyoti parboiled red rice is finally ready for sale. It is available for sale at Rs.100 per kg. from December 15, 2014 on Mondays and Wednesdays between 10.00 am and 12.00 noon. First come first serve. -- Marie can be contacted at 406/1 Grande Coimavaddo, Aldona, Bardez Goa 403508. [Goanet] Dr. Wilfred Mesquita's doublespeak
As the BJP Party spokesperson, it is quite easy to understand Dr. Wilfred Mesquita’s convoluted logic in defending the indefensible as far as his party government is concerned. Dr. Mesquita should surely appreciate however, that the people find it very hard to buy his argument that “corruption still persists in the state which is difficult to curtail since most Goans refrain from complaining”. After all, the BJP government seems to have no problem in bulldozing the second airport project at Mopa, despite all the Goans who have not “refrained” from complaining. These Goans have asked pertinent, relevant and very troubling questions about the viability and the environmental repercussions of this project, which Dr. Mesquita’s government has chosen not to answer, exposing clearly just how much it cares about Goans who complain or “refrain” from complaining. In fact Dr. Mesquita himself was one of the Goans who did not “refrain” from complaining about this Mopa airport project some years ago when he stood shoulder to shoulder with Churchill Alemao. The Goa BJP government’s standards of “good governance” are clearly exposed when it admits that for the past two and a half years, it has not been able to find a qualified Lokayukta in the whole country. What about the Regional Plan, the Mining issue, the totally ineffective Garbage Management even after Goan taxpayers have funded MLA’s “garbage study” junkets abroad? Dr. Mesquita’s government cannot even push through the promised Special Status for Goa after two and a half years and getting their own Party government at the Centre. The excuses for Dr. Mesquita’s government’s non performance have now run out. The BJP government is sleepwalking through its term, probably because of the lack of a robust opposition which has deluded it into thinking that it is presiding over a “monopolistic” democracy. Wake up and smell the coffee Dr. Mesquita. It’s still a people’s democracy and compelling school kids to write eulogies on “good governance” on Christmas day does not mean that it really exists here in Goa or in the rest of the country.

[Goanet] The Universal People’s Saint for Peace
The Universal People’s Saint for Peace by George Pinto Standing near God and next to Jesus (the Prince of Peace), with angels bowing in adoration, a Goan is soon to be the universal People's Saint for Peace On January 14, 2015, Pope Francis will canonize Goan-born Joseph Vaz (1651-1711) in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Thereafter he will be known as Saint Joseph Vaz. They are approximately 10,000 saints in the Catholic calendar - an official and exact number is not provided by the Vatican since record-keeping in these matters has not always been clear in centuries past. However, Saint Joseph Vaz, as he will be called, stands out as the universal People's Saint for Peace. If peace on earth is what we all aspire to, then Saint Joseph Vaz is first in the line of saints, a person admired and appreciated by people of other faiths and non-religious people too. Peace is not merely the absence of war, but so many things as with the 2014 Nobel Peace prize. The winners received the prize for children’s rights and education and freeing children from bonded labor. Peace is humility and non-violence in the face of great adversity and hostility and Joseph Vaz exemplified those virtues in extremely trying circumstances in Sri Lanka, including Dutch persecution. He lived as a beggar, walked barefoot, was sometimes chained. Although he did not die a martyr's death, the strong case has been made by Filomena Saraswati Giese, President of the Joseph Naik Vaz Institute (Berkeley, California), that he lived a martyr's life. Peace is inter-religious harmony too. The Buddhist King of Kandy protected him (a Catholic), in one of history’s great inter-religious examples. Those who hate today based on religious grounds should note people of various faiths can and do get along. Peace is not forcibly converting people, or with the backing of the inquisition or crusades and other means. Joseph Vaz grew the Catholic faith in Sri Lanka without ANY forced conversions and without any colonial backing. His own deep faith and simplicity was all he needed. Standing near God and next to Jesus (the Prince of Peace), with angels bowing in adoration, a Goan is soon to be the universal People's Saint for Peace. In the bright lights of eternity, Joseph Vaz stands now at the head of the class of saints. People everywhere and for centuries to come have a model for peace, someone to look up to. Blessed are the peace makers . The writer lives in the San Francisco Bay area and his views above do not necessarily reflect the views of any organization he belongs to, including the Joseph Naik Vaz Institute which he has strongly supported since 2000.

Dear Editor, Kindly give the attached press note and photos wide publicity. Best wishes, Dr. Brian Mendonca Assistant Professor Department of English Carmel College, Goa *PRESS NOTE* *'The trick is not to noun / yourself into corners. /Water the plants. / Go for a walk. / Inhabit the verb.' -- this sage advice from her poem 'Strategist' came through in the sessions on writing poetry conducted by noted poet Arundhathi Subramaniam at Carmel College for Women, Nuvem, Goa on 2 December 2014 in the college. **The workshop for students of creative writing of the Department of English was conceived as an outreach of the Goa Arts and Literary Festival, 2014 in association with the International Centre, Goa.* *Welcoming Ms. Subramaniam to the college, the Principal Dr. (Sr.) M. Aradhana A.C. hailed it as a momentous event in the Golden Jubilee year of Carmel College. In a scintillating performance Ms. Subramaniam introduced herself and Bombay -- the place where she lives -- with 'I live on a wedge of land / reclaimed from a tired ocean / somewhere at the edge of the universe.' Among the many poems /poets she mediated to the students from Robert Burns and T.S. Eliot to Bhakti poetry, was her own poem 'Heirloom' on her grandmother. Students read their poems and were introduced to the nuances of tone and imagery. 'Allow a poem to breathe,' said Ms. Subramaniam. The workshop went a long way to demystify poetry for teenagers and refine their poetic practice. *

Margao police station ranks high with 167 cases of thefts being booked this year till date, followed by Colva police station with 71 cases, Maina-Curtorim police station with 49 cases, and Cuncolim police station with 27 cases. Police sources informed that of the 257 cases registered in Salcete police stations, the police have succeeded in detecting just 100 cases, indicating that the crime detection rate is a mere 30%. Major cases that took place in the recent months include the dacoity at the house of Allan Rodrigues at Davorlim and the burglary at Yogesh Kale's house at Agalli, Fatorda. Police sources said that the investigations have revealed that the fingerprints of one of the accused in the Davorlim dacoity are found to be matching with one of the accused in the case of dacoity that occurred in the house of a businessman at Aquem, several years ago. The police had arrested Ishwar Ahmed Hussain, Mohammed Jamil Shaikh, Zhulfikar Ali Akhtar and Sarjay Aslam, all natives of Uttar Pradesh in the Aquem dacoity case then, but all them were later acquitted by the high court. While eight accused had entered the house of Allan Rodrigues at Davorlim, the number of intruders in the Aquem case was nine, police sources said. Eight men, with their faces covered and armed with sticks and batons, had fled with cash and gold ornaments valued at nearly 1 lakh by a car and a scooter belonging to the Rodrigues family. While the car was found abandoned near the SGPDA market the next day, the scooter, however, remains untraceable till date. Police have also found some similarities in the modus operandi of the accused in the case of burglary that took place in the house of Yogesh Kale over a month ago. Four masked men, clad in black clothes, had gained entry into Kale's house and decamped with cash and valuables, all worth 2.75 lakhs. Police believe that the same gang could be involved in the two crimes. Police are of the view that the accused belong to a gang from a nomadic tribe which is, of late, active in cases of theft and dacoity in Ahmednagar. A team of South Goa police is currently camping in Ahmednagar in a bid to trace the accused. Porvorim police approach to crime is casual: Khaunte TNN | Dec 15, 2014 PANAJI: Claiming that the Porvorim police had become casual in their approach, Porvorim MLA (Independent) Rohan Khaunte demanded that the state home ministry review the performance of the Porvorim police station. Speaking at a press conference in the city on Monday, Khaunte cited a recent example where the Porvorim police inspector refused to file an FIR in a burglary case. Khaunte alleged that the police inspector went on to ask the complainant, a senior citizen, to rear a dog for protection. The victim, a senior citizen in her late 60s, had approached the police last week to register her complain and following the police refusal to do so, she approached the electronic media and narrated her plight. The police have lost credibility, Khaunte said. There is no seriousness as far as tackling law and order is concerned. If the police inspector can't manage, he must vacate the post and take a private job, the MLA, who had a brush with the police in the past too, demanded. But, a senior police officer said that the senior citizen had given a written statement to the local police station saying that she did not want to file an FIR as the items stolen were a couple of brass pots. I am reading from the hand written application that she has submitted. In it, she herself says that she doesn't want to file an FIR but would like the items to be returned to her if the police find the culprit, the official said. Khaunte, who has lent outside support to the ruling BJP-led government, has said that if the government does not take action he would do what is necessary to take the issue to its logical conclusion. The Porvorim MLA refused to set a deadline for the government and preferred to say that he would decide on his next step later. Khaunte alleged that the local police were refusing to file complaints as they wanted to show that the crime rate in their jurisdiction was low. He went on to add that the police were turning a blind eye towards prostitution, drug peddling and abuse, land grab, fraud and burglary that were rampant in the area. The police had promised increased patrolling and tenancy verification but nothing has been done. Every time I ask about it, I hear excuses about Iffi and Exposition, Khaunte

Microsoft’s Skype software will start translating voice calls between people today. As part of a preview program, Skype Translator makes it possible for English and Spanish speakers to communicate in their native language, without having to learn a new one. It sounds like magic , but it’s the result of years of work from Microsoft’s research team and Skype to provide an early working copy of software that could help change the way the world communicates in the future. More: http://www.theverge.com/2014/12/15/7393665/skype-translator-features Sometimes, a dream needs but a nudge to propel it toward reality. That is exactly what Eric Rudder and Peter Lee delivered to Microsoft’s Machine Translation team about a year ago.Rudder, then Microsoft’s chief research and strategy officer, and Lee, head of Microsoft Research, had been among those who had seen demonstrations of a research project designed to provide fluent, cross-lingual conversations between speakers of different languages. The demos were tantalizing, offering the potential to smash through the language barriers that have hindered human communication for thousands of years.Rudder and Lee were convinced: The time had come to make it real. That task fell to, among others, the Machine Translation team, based in Redmond and headed by Arul Menezes. More: http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/news/features/translator-052714.aspx

Re: [Goanet] Dr. Wilfred Mesquita's doublespeak
There are many points in Diana's post that I agree with. To use an analogy: I remind myself never to pay too much attention to the freshly baked mini-loaves / slices of bread that the waiter brings to a table at some restaurants. Even if I am 'starvando'.I prefer to wait for the entree. In the public arena, my experience is that 'statements' made by spokespersons are a distraction. All it does is keep well meaning activists busy.until the next time. I'd submit that anytime some spokepersonish bread is served, there is an entree around. Very soon, all will be forgotten and glorious bhaxans will be made - telling Goans how fortunate they are...and have been - to just be in these times. That, and the customary articles in the newspapers and on Goanet. Please stay tuned. On a personal note, I would re-read world history before I disregard the 'fait accompli'. the best to you jc. [Goanet] Amendment to Mundkar and Agriculture Act
From Joao fernandes, Quepem Is the Amendment to the Mundkar Act and to the Agriculture Tenancy act is passed in collusion with the landlord including the church? The Goa Government has recently done major changes to the Goa Mundkar Act and Tenancy Act. The changes will effect the lower section of the society including the catholic community. It may also displace them from the land which they have nurture/cultivated for generations together. It appears that the force behind the present amendment is the feudal class of Goa. The church in Goa falls in Goa falls in feudal class as it is the biggest land owner in Goa . The presently amendment is passed by the BJP government may be in collusion with the Church and I have my own reasoning to believe so. The Church in Goa is known to raise its objections/voice/circulars/press note over any issue that affects to it follower. Though the amendment to Mundkar Act and Agriculture tenancy act is bound to affect major section particularly lower section of the Catholic community in the years to come, Even then the church is silent over the issue. So far it has not issued any notification/circular/press note nor its priest are involved in educating the people over the issue. The church may be silent or mute because the amendment is likely to benefit the church it being a landlord. The further truth may the amendment to the Mundkar act and the Agriculture tenancy act might have been done by the BJP government also in collusion with the church. If that is not the case then church will come in open in opposing the amendment or atlist it will take the lead in educating the poor masses over the amendments.

[Goanet] Dayanand Asnodkar Former Goa Chess Champion RIP
Dayanand Asnodkar Former Goa Chess Champion No More Dayanand Asnodkar, one of the best chess players of his generation passed away on 5 December. He was one of the 4 Asnodkar brothers who dominated Goan chess throughout the 1980's, of whom Suhas Asnodkar, former long-time Secretary of the Goa Chess Association is still active. He died on 5 December after succumbing to a chronic ailment. He was 49. Dayanand was a prominent figure in all the major State age group championships on offer during his time and his trophies included the Senior State Open Championship in 1987. He was in the top 10 ranks of the State Championship through most of the 80's and represented Goa State several times in the Nationals. He won prizes at several Open championships too. He was a founder member of the Porvorim Chess club but his involvement in his family business perhaps restricted his growth as a chess player. Dayanand was the youngest of the well-known Asnodkar brothers of Porvorim. The love of chess was imbibed in them by eldest brother Devidas and former Sarpanch of Porvorim who was a very good cricket and football player. Devidas took to training his yournger brothers in chess after suffering an injury in a football match playing for St Xavier's College. These brothers particularly Suhas and his youngest Daya (also called Bhai) who went on to dominate Goan chess in the 1980s. Daya became State Champion in 1987, the year the Asnodkar brothers took the first four places in the State Championship and when all four of them (including the late Narendra who died in 2005) represented Goa in the Tenali National Team Championship in 1987. The fifth player in that team incidentally was Augusto Pinto. Dayanand is survived by his wife and 2 sons. May his soul rest in peace.
