[Goanet] THE DEEP AND STRONG, THE STRAIGHT AND TRUE

2017-06-27 Thread Stephen Dias
*THE DEEP AND STRONG,*
*THE STRAIGHT AND TRUE*

ELVIDIO MIRANDA
We are living in a competitive world, where result-oriented work is a must
for survival. To cope up with the need to obtain results, many-a-times we
resort to sleight of hand in order to make our voices heard. There is a
belief that the shortest way is the best way. But, the longer the duration
of your solid effort, the greater the ability to build your stamina,
strength and staying power. It should not matter if you go the long hard
way, because it is the long hard way that leads us to endurance and power.
The emphasis should not be for quick results, but for enduring
self-sustenance, built up on the quantum of your effort and the amount of
substance. Straight-forward, simple tasks builds in ourselves the ability
to stay firm and solid. Also, in order to win over others we tend to stray
away from the fundamentals, into the realm of deviation from reality.
However, if we seek to make small but substantial gains, the best way out
is to build a strong foundation, a solid base from where to consolidate
with hard work, honesty and integrity. Winning in the short term by
resorting to deception seems to be like a short-cut to success and is
transient, but building up on a strong base with consistent real time
achievement is a recipe for the ability to pile up on the initial strong
rock like solidity. Even in a world where complex logic prevails, your
unwavering integrity makes it the bedrock for your ability to understand
and perceive complexities with subtle nuances. Instead of departure from
the solid truth, the better way would be to achieve following by building
tiny bits by tiny bits of substance which do not deviate from the truth and
which are infallible. Men and women of strong character are those who
cultivate abilities brick by brick and one step at a time.
An old Chinese proverb goes as follows: The mantis stalks the cicada,
unaware of the yellow bird behind. This proverb encapsulates the strong
belief that you should not take advantage of those who are susceptible but
that you continue to do what is right, because you become responsible for
your own actions taken against those who you think may not be strong enough
and that you are ultimately brought to justice, if you willfully prey on
others. This proverb clearly cautions those who take advantage of others.
An age-old adage says that failures are stepping stones to success. It is
evident that many who stumble and flounder, ultimately taste success, and
the success attained due to your struggle and belief tastes sweeter. Thus,
this goes to prove that surprises that happen in life is a sum total of the
effort that one accumulates in quest for realizing your ultimate goal.
So the next time you find that a laggard is finally a winner, acknowledge
his or her trials and tribulations.

[Goanet] 13th Sunday of the Year

2017-06-27 Thread Jude Botelho
27-Jun-2017
Dear Friend,
We normally believe that people are good and friendly and hence we do not
generally fear or suspect them. However, we see and read of robberies and of
people assaulted that we tend to fear strangers and are on our guard against
them. But the stranger could turn out to be a friend we have never met. The
Jews prized hospitality. Could not God come in the garb of a stranger? Can we
welcome him? Have a welcoming weekend! -Fr. Jude
Sun Ref. 13th Sunday: “Open our hearts to welcome you whenever you come!”

10: 37-42;

Today’s liturgy centres on the theme of hospitality. Hospitality, as a virtue,
is still practiced. We still visit people and most people make us feel welcome
into their homes. In the first reading we see Elisha is welcomed by an elderly
woman in Shunem, who urges him to eat some food. He is touched by the welcome
hospitality and by the fact that whenever he passes that way he is offered a
meal. Seeing that he is a regular visitor, the couple decide to build a small
room so Elisha can rest comfortably. Touched by their generosity he decides to
reward them. Finding out that they are childless, he promises them the gift of
a son as God’s blessing on them.

ShoesAs Gandhi stepped aboard a train one day, one of his shoes slipped off and
landed on the track. He was unable to retrieve it as the train was moving. To
the amazement of his companions, Gandhi took off his other shoe and threw it
back along the track to land close to the first. Asked by a fellow passenger
why he did so, Gandhi smiled. “The poor fellow who finds the shoe lying on the
track,” he replied, “will now have a pair he can use.”Author unknown
In today’s gospel Jesus instructs his disciples about how they have to be
hospitable and welcoming even though they themselves may not be welcomed and
may sometimes be rejected as they preach the good news. They will also
experience the warm hospitality of some who will welcome them. He also reminds
them that even a small gesture of offering a glass of water given in
hospitality will be rewarded. The practice of receiving a guest or a stranger
was common to many social groups at that time. It was a sacred duty practiced
by many. The guest was treated with respect and honour and was provided with
shelter. A significant feature of hospitality was Israel’s deep sense of God as
its host. Israel treasured its identity as a pilgrim people. They remembered
that their home belonged to God and that they like their ancestors remained
pilgrims and passing guests in God’s house.
Modern SamaritanA salesman had had a busy week and was returning to his home
town. He stopped his car for a break at a roadside coffee shop. As he sat
drinking his coffee he heard a girl quietly crying in the next booth. He didn't
want to get involved but he was moved by her obvious distress. The girl was
about 17, the same age as his daughter. Against his better judgement he
introduced himself and asked if he could help. The girl, whose name was Lisa,
told him that she was from a broken home and had got into bad company. She was
into drugs and had turned to prostitution to pay for them. Moved as he was, he
just bought the girl a meal and continued his journey. Later that evening he
shared his experience with his family. His family suggested that he return to
that town and try to find Lisa again and offer to help. He eventually located
her. He discovered that she was but one of a number of girls in that town in
similar circumstances who were being exploited by the pimps and drug pushers.
He was so moved by Lisa's plight that he took her home to his family, and that
started a ministry to try and get those girls off the streets. Out of that
simple beginning over a cup of coffee that man now has three full-time workers
and has seen scores of girls come off the streets and get their lives back
together. The ministry became so successful that it earned the man a

shared everything equally, produce and profit. Then one day the single brother
said to himself. “It’s not right that we should share equally the produce and
the profit. I am alone and my needs are simple.” So each night he took a sack
of grain from his bin and crept across the field between their houses dumping
it into his brother’s bin. Meanwhile the married brother said to himself. “It
is not right that we should share the profit and the produce equally. After all
I am married and have my wife and children to look after me in years to come.
My brother has no one, and no one to take care of his future.” So each night he

I agree that the term "Liberation" is lazy shorthand to cover-up a whole
lot of issues and concerns. It is probably a cut-and-paste job from

But to judge five-and-half decades of social change (positive, negative and
neither-here-no-there)  by whether corriander leaves get washed in some
gutter, and dragging in someone's name into the debate, doesn't make too
much sens eto me.

It only shows the narrowness of our discussion skills.

Re: [Goanet] NOW RASHTRAPATI BHAVAN TO ALSO BE A BJP DEN

2017-06-27 Thread BT Yahoo Mail
Hi Naguesh,India’s tragedy is that it has not produced distinguished leaders -
philosopher-statesmen like China, Singapore or Vietnam. The usual bunch of
Indian leaders have tended to be soaked in religious traditions or rituals and
have shown little intellectual acument.

Nehru was lucky because the British got him educated at a top institution in
England where he encountered new ideas and disciplines like History &
Philosophy which no doubt helped him fashion a new worldview. His fluency in
English helped him express his new thinking in this foreign language. The
vernaculars were no match for English.

But subsequent PMs (after Indira Gandhi) did not pass out from world class
institutions and their performance was predictably and consistently mediocre.
Quality and excellence have continued to elude Indian institutions and leaders.
Indian leaders have never been erudite and farsighted enough to compare with
East Asia.

PM Modi seems basically a peasant or village leader who has picked up modern
trappings here and there. But he certainly is unable to formulate an integral
vision of development. He is most at home with sadhus and swamis. He's coarse &
undiplomatic; he can't open up to minority cultures. The Hindu rulers just send
the Indian armies or police to control minority regions - Kashmir (Muslims),
North East (Christians), Central India (tribals).

It may be worth quoting from Mr Jagmohan’s My Frozen Turbulence published in
1991.

There is something basically wrong in present-day India that takes her astray
in almost every sphere of life. The country requires fundamental reforms in the
realm of ideas. During my somewhat tumultuous and eventful in public service, I
was fortunate to have had a close look at the state of our institutions. All
along I felt that some vital planks were missing in our edifice. It was bound
to totter and it often did.
We need a re-awakened and rejuvenated Hinduism that has shed its flabbiness,
cleared its clogged arteries and recouped its vigour and buoyancy. This new
Hinduism would create a new Hindu who is just, compassionate, creative and
contemplative; a Hindu with a clean conscience, one who believes in the
fundamental unity of man
