[Goanet] SPEAKER'S DECISION APPEARS TO BE UNDEMOCRATIC AND ATTEMPT TO SHIELD THE GOVERNMENT?

2018-02-13 Thread Stephen Dias
Speaker's decision appears to be
undemocratic and
attempt to shield BJP

Stephen Dias, Dona Paula
mob: 9422443110

The decision of the Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly not to allow a
private members' bill in the Assembly on the issue of installation of a
statue of Dr. Jack de Sequeira in the Legislative Assembly Complex at
Porvorim is not befitting a Speaker who should be neutral and unbiased. The
equation for the passing of the resolution in the Assembly was quiet clear.
Considering that the Goa Forward Party's three legislators were going to
vote in favour of installation of the statue of Dr. Jack de Sequeira in the
assembly the numbers said it all. There are 16 Congress MLAs, 3 GFP MLAs
and Churchill Alemao who were going to vote in favour of installation of
the statue which brings the total number of MLAs in favour of the
resolution to 20. Since the Speaker does not have a vote except in case of
a tie, it would mean that for the first time the BJP government would have
lost face as also the moral right to carry on in the government. This is
considering that Michael Lobo voted against the motion, which he was
supposed to vote in favour of in the absence of the whip by the BJP. In
such a scenario, the Speaker's decision to not allow the private members
bill from being allowed is a clear case of the partisan stance of the
Speaker which is illegal and undemocratic in nature. By not allowing the
Bill, the Speaker has illegally shielded the ruling party from a major
embarrassment as well as the possibility of a loss of majority on the issue
of the installation of a statue of Dr. Jack de Sequeira. This decision of
the Speaker is a totally unbecoming of a Speaker in the highest traditions
of democracy and murder of democracy. Will the Speaker give reason for his
not allowing this Bill from being introduced? Now what should be expected
from Vijai Sardesai is to as leader of GFP to install a statue of Dr. Jack
de Sequeira at Fatorda so as to keep his promise. Anyway, Churchill Alemao
has already decided to have a statue of Dr. Jack de Sequeira at Benaulim.
The people are waiting to follow-up this issue and each leader is being put
to the test about their utterances and promises. It would here be informed
that people's memory are not short and that a fitting reply will be given
to those who have stayed in the way and blocked the installation of the
statue of Dr, Jack de Sequeira who is the Father of the Opinion Poll as
well as the Architect of Goa's identity.

[Goanet] 70,000 Toilets Plus and the view from the bus window

2018-02-13 Thread Joao Barros-Pereira
While the government deserves a lot of credit for aspiring to build
seventy thousand toilets in households in Goa by October of this
year, and will probably reach the target, we need to look beyond the
magic number and also observe carefully how the workers of shacks on
the beaches exhibit their bare backsides not too far from 5-star
hotels.

The Chief Minister was shocked to hear about the lack of toilets in
seventy thousand houses. He will be even more shocked to see the early
morning scenario on some of the beaches in Goa. Believe me, it is not
a pretty sight.

Making Goa open defecation free (ODF) is a laudable goal and the
households who will benefit from the largesse of the government need
to be most grateful to it. What is of serious concern are the shacks
on the beaches in Goa which do not have toilet facilities for the
workers who number in hundreds. These shack employees are a threat to
the health of the tourists even though the shacks have received a
green signal from the Food and Drug Department as well as Health.

As some hotels on the beaches are now catering to the wedding
business, the early morning baring of backsides on the beaches and
bordering land are even more numerous because of the extended
business. They have joined the shack employees in using the beaches
and fields close to the beaches, and the beaches have become one big,
open air toilet in the morning. If your eyes let you down, don't
worry, your nose certainly won't! As having to go to the toilet is a
basic human function (even if there are no toilets!) these shack and
hotel employees need to be protected, and their dignity not taken
away. It is, of course, not as bad as the no-budget tourist who peed
through the window of a bus. I hope his aim was accurate otherwise his
friendly fire might have caused a problem to the other passengers on
the bus.

No toilets and no health showers are a grave threat to the people who
eat the food in the restaurants on the beaches and, they are often
tourists from luxury hotels. I can only hope the cooks wash their
hands thoroughly for the sake of the tourists if they touch the food
with their bare hands. As for the Health Lab on wheels, as far as I
know, it cannot navigate on our sandy beaches and so the government
has to make other arrangements to monitor hygiene regularly, and buy
at least a dozen more vans or the one and only van is going to be
nothing more than a show window.

On any given day on some beaches, it is possible to see dozens of
plastic bottles of water which are used to clean the backsides of the
workers after they have finished what they came to do on the beaches.
They prefer to use plastic bottles which at one point in time had
mineral water in them. No beer bottles or whisky bottles however
expensive for them which shows, I believe, their wonderful sense of
humor.

I hope the government also has a sense of humor and gets the joke.
Otherwise, the final laugh might well be on the 5-star tourists who
visit the shacks in Goa.

II Admission denied in Emergency Ward! II

Not questioning, but haven’t we have come a long way ………!

Its best not to put words here, however precisely I could do that. In my
experience at college in India and to a degree in the west (with Indians)
too, I had the unadulterated opportunity learn that the deviant, the anti
secular, and fascist mindset resorts to using ones words as a springboard
against you — when you may be pointing to a truth or fact. So saying
something as real as: “haven’t we have come a long way [from what was
“touted” as “India’s fabled tolerance”]!”
Here the issue would be “touted” and “India’s fabled tolerance.”

I have always believed that unless Hindus distance themselves vocally from
such ignominy we can expect very little by way of any remnant of a sliver
of egalitarianism. They carry a lot of weight, but do not use it.

One must try to keep talking (the sense it is) with ones friends; or sadly
continue bemoaning as seen on Goanet, on to the extent of harboring
misgivings about friends have turned crass them. But still babbling about
friendship. Why even say that. Continue to have your complex relationships.

Dudes! something happened while you were passing the meats and liquor. Now
they do not need you.

OF COURSE, it is abhorrent to pin such political behavior on your fellowman
who celebrates a party whose rules on lack of identification will now deny
admission to an emergency ward. I know Hinduism, and it is not this. But,
it is worth remembering that they have scriptures to assist them wisely,
against wrong diktats, and the fashioning of inhumane practises by those
who proclaim to be Hindu.

[Goanet] Indian Army Chief Vindicated

2018-02-13 Thread Roland Francis
Pakistan’s habit of threatening India with a first-strike nuclear attack even
if India attacks with conventional weapons, has at last been exposed as a bluff
by Indian Army Chief Bipin Rawat who had indicated to them that he had a
strategy to deal with it.

That his calling of their bluff was effective, can be see from the Pakistan
Defence Minister’s latest statement.

“New Delhi: A day after India blamed Pakistan for the recent terrorist attacks
in Army and CRPF camps in Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan Defence Minister Khurram
Dastgir Khan, on Tuesday, warned that any Indian aggression will be met with an
equal and proportionate response.
“Pakistan will pay India in its own coin in case of any Indian misadventure,”
Khan said. “Any Indian aggression, strategic miscalculation, or misadventure
regardless of its scale, mode, or location, will not go unpunished and shall be
met with an equal and proportionate response.”

‘Equal and proportionate’ simply means they would use the same weaponry that
India uses.

A victory for Gen. Rawat and for India.

Trailblazers of Goa: Passionate People Who Make a Difference

Donald Fernandes is a Santa Claus for Every Day

Housing and Feeding the Poor: One Day at a Time

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Goa Streets series, “Trailblazers of Goa: Passionate
People Who Make A Difference” features photos and interviews with those who
break convention, obliterate barriers, seize new opportunities and inspire
the best in us. We have asked each of our Trailblazers the exact same
questions about their lives and hopes for Goa (see bottom of this story).
It is a privilege to announce this week’s Trailblazer, Donald Fernandes,
who perhaps has done more than anyone else in the state to feed the hungry.
The example set by Donald and his organization “Street Providence” is
particularly poignant during this season of giving. Read on to find out how
Donald “played” his way into the Limca Book of Records. Trailblazers of Goa
pictures have been taken by noted photographer Eugen Hanley, with words by
long-time writer and world traveller Hilary Lapedis.

As many of us are preparing to feast at Christmas and gorge on New Year’s
Eve, already planning to diet in January, Donald Fernandes, 42 from
Sangolda, reminds us of those who remain hungry. His food bank nourishes
all in Goa who can’t afford the price of food. Be it the local families who
come each night to St. Diogo’s church in Guirim or those who are fed via
the fridges in Mapusa and Sangolda or watered by a free filtered water tap
nearby; or the nightly food run at Mapusa’s taxi rank. Donald feeds and
nourishes the hidden and neglected.

Playing Santa Claus all year round to Goa’s poor is a role he doesn’t shout
about. In fact, getting him to agree to be photographed for this feature
took plenty of persuasion. His modesty extends to his reluctance to brag
about his role in ’Street Providence’, a service that is a one-stop shop
for the needy. Rescuing people like Rajesh, 30 from the streets: with a
shave and a bath, and providing them with shelter and hope. Rajesh was
noticed by Donald’s team of spotters who contacted him via WhatsApp.
Hopelessly addicted to alcohol, Rajesh needed support. Now, living at
‘Street Providence’s’ beautiful house in Porvorim, he’s sober and even has
a job as cook in the refuge.

But what drives Donald, one of 13 children where “food was always short” to
give up his dairy marketing business to spin his spider’s web of
anti-poverty networks? What gives him the energy for his drive this coming
January with the Government of Goa to assist the forgotten and desperate
living at garbage dumps? The answer can be found on his group’s Facebook
page, where the images I saw reminded me more of Delhi’s poorest slums than
anything one would expect to see in India’s richest state. “It’s Give With
Love”, he says. Not charity. “It’s unconditional.”

With his ‘Street Providence’ home in Porvorim, he can comfortably house 20
men from the streets. (He has permission to provide housing to males).
Often mute from years of isolation or speaking without recognizable
language; habituated to scrabbling for anything remotely edible like twigs
or grass, these men are shaved, bathed, fed and offered a second chance.
With an enforced routine to enhance self- respect, some inevitably can’t
cope but his successes in integrating them back into society hugely
outweigh any recidivism. Unlike many shelters, Donald provides a home
where, if they wish, they can stay permanently. Rasik lay in hospital
recovering from surgery to amputate his leg. As if that weren’t trauma
enough, his family then abandoned him. ‘Street Providence’ was alerted. Now
re-homed in Porvorim, he has hope.

With a commercial background in food, Donald became increasingly disturbed
by the sheer volumes of food wastage. The food bank was born four years ago
in his family kitchen and has grown immensely in the last six months.
Today, with over 25 fridges operating as food banks, his team feeds 2000
needy people every day and hopes to increase this number to 10,000 in the
coming months.

“Wherever you are in Goa, you will find a food bank within thirty minutes
from you.” Any person, restaurant or hotel with unused food can pack it in
food grade plastic bags and take it to a bank. WhatsApp Donald and your
food is on its way to feed others’ needs. Now that’s a deposit worth
making! He’s going to be tying up with petrol pumps to utilize their
fridges as food banks. Fuel up your vehicle and fuel up the poor. Using
this food to feed up to 150 people in Panjim or Mapusa; at the ‘Street
Providence’ house in Porvorim or at St. Diogo’s church in Guirim, your food
donations are never wasted.
