[Goanet] Can you help to subtitle the trailer of this lovely Konkani film?

2019-02-05 Thread Frederick Noronha
Dear all: This is a lovely Goan film. Its producer/director Bardroy
Barretto (from the same village as Maestro Lourdino Barreto in Canacona and
alumni of Loyola's Margao) is open to have it subtitled into other
languages.

See the trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrQY-GVS5vE
I'm sure you'll find it very good.

Bardroy has done a fab job on the movie, and if it could reach out to the
non-English speaking world, it could build more friends and appreciators of
Goa.

Please see how you could help in any way and take this forward. Bardroy is

[Goanet] The Sultan And The Saint

2019-02-05 Thread Roland Francis
Catholics in the UAE and surrounding Persian Gulf nations are all excited about
the visit of Pope Francis to Abu Dhabi. While the excitement is understandable
given the stature of the head of the Catholic Church, it goes too far when the
visit is compared to a similar visit by the current pope’s patron St. Francis
of Assisi crossing over to meet the Sultan of Egypt during the wars of the
Fifth Crusade,

In my view this visit of Francis is nothing grandiose and on the scale of what
it is made out to be. Sure, it is a coup for the rulers of the UAE since it
puts them in the world news, a definite plus needed to boost their credibility
in their straitened financial condition and the upcoming Dubai Expo 2020 which
critics are already predicting to be a failure. If Pope Francis is hoping for a
change in the attitude towards the Christian Faith being allowed to practice
there, it’s not going to happen. They may be liberal as compared to some of
their neighbours but forget about a change towards their prevailing faith
policies. It’ll take more than a Pope for that.

So what do you think the Vatican bureaucracy thinks it can get from this visit?
Possibly a more generous collection from the faithful in a well heeled tax free
jurisdiction, but with expats fleeing the place in droves, this expectation
could be misplaced. Perhaps an example to Saudi Arabia, the UAE’s current best
friend and ally to liberalize its chokehold on religious fanaticism. Not likely
to happen either. Could it be a friendly talk with Mohamed Bin Zayed about
easing up on the slaughter of the starving Yemenis or at least persuade his
best friend MBS to discontinue that policy.

Who really knows. Just as historians will never know what transpired between
Francis of Assisi and the Sultan of Egypt 800 years ago to the date, few will
really know the true purpose of the current Pope’s visit. One thing is sure. It
has nothing to do about the two faiths or about religion.

In 1219, St. Francis crossed Crusade lines to meet Egypt's sultan. What can we
learn from their encounter? | America Magazine

Madhushree Ghosh’s essay is a very touching one; a lost yearning for a past
that was like a ship once with a firm direction that has since lost its compass

Not to criticize Selma Carvalho’s The Joao Roque literary Journal, but if she
found writing like this, it would take her compilation to another level.
Currently her journal looks like it is faking it before making it, supposedly

Selma has been a cyber friend for decades but I cannot help feel disappointment

[Goanet] Hampi heritage site vandalised

2019-02-05 Thread Nelson Lopes
HAMPI HERITAGE SITE VANDALISED

It was the last capital of Hindu Kingdom of Viajaynagar, It took over 200
years to complete finally under Raja Krishna Deva Raya (1509-1530). Hampi
is surrounded by Tungabadra river. It has military and civilian signatures.
It housed multi religious and ethnic societies. It is spread over 4187.24
hectares. Battle of Talikota 1565 destroyed it under coalition of sultanate
armies who pillaged over 6 months and left in ruins ever since. The
remains were only taken note of in 19th Century

It is a Unesco world heritage site “ austere grandiose site” named as
prosperous, wealthy grand city The ruins have 1600 monuments spread over a
wide area, documented to be preserved and protected .

This heritage site consists of ruins of forts, riversides features, water
structures, royal residences , and sacred complexes, temples, shrines, Jain
temple, Muslim mosque, halls, mandapas, memorial structures, markets,,
gateways, defence check posts, stables, all codified/ classified under
sacred centers ,Royal centre and public utility facilities. The city
structure was influenced by Dravidian culture and Indo Islamic
architecture.

About a year ago this site was vandalized by some 5 miscreants, believed
to be non Kanandigas from recorded spoken language, pushing down and
breaking pillars, for no apparent reasons and which formed remains of
Hindu temple. No local or central authority was even aware of it or even
visited the site until the video went viral ,The culprits are yet to be
booked, for criminal acts of vandalism. It reflects lethargy of preserving
our heritage. There is provision for arrest and jail, fines and recovery of
cost of restoration, which continues to remain a far cry from slumbering
authorities to act in the face of indisputable evidence. The place is
visited by social and religious tourists at meets and festivals, not
necessarily by those who wish to immerse and have serious intent in our
grand past and culture, The ASI, and Hampi world heritage area monument
authority and other bodies in Karnataka State are busy passing on the blame
game. Lack of money, personnel to manage 1600 declared monuments over the
vast area is lame excuse of neglect. No feasible surveillance is set up
or even contemplated. Heavy entry fees as a recommendation can be levied
to discourage non serious visitors only for protected monument. The
Karnataka Govt, is toying with the idea of Kaveri monument at a cost of
1600 crores plus .The ASI crying for lack of resources and fund allocations
has built a palacious structure to house itself in Delhi .The priority of
preserving the rich heritage is secondary in relation to competing to
building new grandiose staues/ monuments. The Govt appointed bodies must
be held responsible and accountable to maintain and preserve, conserve all
such heritage sites, monuments for posterity, Accordingly they need to
work and plan in close co ordination with concerned bodies to document,
visit periodically ,inspect, provide budget for financial resources in
areas of neglected aspects and recommend of surveillance procedures,
upkeep, maintenance. etc

There could be restricted areas at UNESCO world heritage Hampi site to
be visited to bring monitoring under reasonable control and prevent
vandalisation . Instruction, education in culture may help, but maintaining
law and discouraging criminal activities and action under law is primary
responsibility of law enforcing machinery of state and centre along with
world heritage bodies. It is hoped that Hampi viral video of vandalisation
will lead to serious reflection about all aspects of heritage sites,
monuments taken to gether in all states of union, WE should not only be
proud of heritage, but preserve it at all costs by using education and
punishment

We will never stop collecting objects that tell the story of our ancestors!

When we arrived in Anegundi with our students from Carlton College, Victor kept
an eye out for tractors full of sugarcane and big fires, a tell-tale sign of
jaggery making season!

He was keen to document the extraction of sugarcane juice using traditional
methods.

Having already witnessed the process in Goa and restored a traditional "Ghanno"
built in 1882, Victor was on the hunt for an older, different sugarcane
crusher...

He asked around Anegundi village, looking for a contact, a connection, which we
found in the man running our cottages and someone reliable introduced by our
tour operator. He introduced us to Sikandar or Chikki, our auto driver,
language translator and guide!

We hopped into our auto, the hunt was on! Lush green paddy fields whizzed past,
as we travelled deep into the country.

We got lost, trailed bullock carts of sugarcane and got lost again, until we
heard there was one machine in a small village called Chikkajanthakal.

Entering the village with full josh, we were soon disappointed when they told
us that the original wooden crushers were discarded, but we did spy a beautiful
manual, Post-Industrial, three-drum metal crusher.
We explained our cause and tried to persuade them but the owner did not want to
sell it because it belonged to their ancestors.
Still...we were warmly invited for soft idlis, delicious homemade chutney and
kadak chai!

By now, our Man Friday, Chikki was completely involved in the hunt! He
whispered another lead to us, we hopped into the auto and whizzed away to
another farm closeby. There, sitting bang in the middle of the field was the
same crusher! Under a sheet of plastic, another one!

An old Chacha, Budhaan Saab, warmly greeted us, as Victor explained who we were
and why we had come there. Relentlessly, we asked for other objects that would
make up the entire set of the crusher.

In a little shed we found large, shallow pans, 16ft in diameter! Like treasure
hunters, we peered further into the shadows, eyes glinting. Tucked into the
bamboo rafters were rusted metal and wood tools of the sugarcane trade, and
even a large metal sword!

Once again, our excitement was short-lived. The two crushers and the pans
belonged to two brothers, and once again, as a matter of family pride, Budhaan
Saab politely declined to donate or sell.

But our tenacious Victor did manage to ask him for two of the smaller objects,
a metal Kathka that was used to scrape the sides of the metal pan and a wooden
Gaura used to cut chunks of jaggery as it was formed.

At Goa Chitra, the search for objects will always continue! We know that Goa
was under the Vijayanagara kingdom in Hampi and we want to collect as many
objects from our indigenous heritage to map out similarities or influences.

How can you help? Well...Keep your eyes open, stay curious, ask questions and
above all, reach out to US!

[Goanet] New Channel tariffs

Channel tariffs

The way the new tariffs were advertised to come into effect, it looked that
the prices would be at a lower level. It was being hoped that channels
would be lot cheaper, than what the customer pays now. The channels are
being bundled into some 3 groups or so at the broadcasters end, some
bifurcated, so that the minimum tariffs are maintained at current level
for the benefit of broadcasters .There is tremendous increase over what was
paid earlier. Let the channels be provided to viewers and they chose to
bundle what they actually want. This is not happening. All HD channels are
priced separately and also sports channels. The very purpose of leaving
selection to viewers is defeated Just imagine what would be the cost at
present level to view as before

(abridged)

Some good news for the threatened built heritage of Goa last week,
when Town and Country Planning minister Vijai Sardesai announced he
would try to create incentives for heritage homestays and hotels
across the state, in an effort to preserve and promote the spectacular
architectural legacy created by previous generations. He said, “we are
trying to create a scheme wherein old houses can be turned into
homestays by giving them sops, like tax exemption. We are trying to
create the scheme along with other tourism schemes, and I will speak
to the tourism minister because there is no other way to preserve
heritage” adding “we also have to speak to chief minister Manohar
Parrikar, who is the finance minister, because the scheme has
financial implications.”

Sardesai said the inspiration for his new ideas come from Rajasthan,
where state support has helped to turn many havelis across the desert
state into well-regarded tourism destinations, homestays and hotels.
But that’s part of an international trend, and indeed much the same is
already underway in Goa, where outstanding example including the
magnificent Figueiredo House in Loutolim, the longtstanding
award-winnwe Arco Iris in Curtorim, and the outstandingly hospitable
Casa Menezes in Batim, where younger generations of Goans have made
appropriate use of their ancestral properties to create unique
hospitality options. In recent years, scores of entrepreneurs from
other parts of India and the world have also joined in this adaptive
reuse of old homes.

Actually, it’s somewhat tragic the government of Goa is only just
waking up to the world class caliber of the state’s Luso-Indian
architecture, so often grotesquely mischaracterized as “Portuguese”.
In fact, as Panjim-based architect Raya Shankhwalker (and current
Secretary of Goa Heritage Action Group) has written, there are no such
houses in Europe, and “ill informed real-estate brokers have coined
the term, which reflects a deeply ignorant conception of the complex,
multi-layered evolution of architecture in Goa. It is wrong, even
offensively wrong, and it is extremely irritating to see the term
actually gain popularity instead of being discarded.”

Far from being Portuguese, the houses, temples and churches built in
Goa in the latter centuries of the colonial period are profound
expression of the fluid, endlessly adaptive world view of the natives.
Paulo Varela Gomes, the late architectural historian, wrote these are
“unique in the world history of architecture…They represent one of the
more remarkable contributions to the history of building.” Most
crucially, he adds, “to anyone with architectural and artistic
sensitivity, these [structures] don’t seem to be the end result of a
compromise but the affirmative artistic statement of a cultural
position.”

Given the uniqueness and importance of Goa’s architecture, its rampant
destruction in the 21stcentury is criminal. All over the state, entire
neighborhoods have been heedlessly bulldozed in the name of
development, without concern about environmental, social or cultural
costs. Even in the tiny conservation zones earmarked in Panjim and
Margao, buildings are constantly torn down and rebuilt, often
egregiously flouting heritage norms. Others are hijacked in plain
sight, such as the superb (and expensively restored) gallery spaces of
the Adil Shah palace at the heart of the capital’s waterfront, now
occupied by bureaucrats, with air conditioning vents shockingly
punched through 500-year-old walls.

Though very far from delivering anything useful, there’s no doubt
Vijai Sardesai has absorbed an essential insight about Goa’s treasure
trove of architectural heritage, in that he wants to co-ordinate his
TCP with the Tourism and Finance ministries, under the aegis of the
chief minister himself. This is the kind of importance the crisis
deserves. The solutions require decisive action, preferably from a
department for heritage that has its own ministerial representation in
the cabinet. This is how it works in other countries. Prompt action
here could indeed mean fresh daylight and a new beginning for Goan
architecture.

[Goanet] Militarymen, Medicines and More: Echoes from the Goan community in the Belgaum of Another Era

2019-02-05 Thread Mervyn Maciel
Yes, Marco's very interesting article brought back many memories of my own
days
in Belgaum.
As Marcos mentions in his article - following the tragic death of my
parents
(Dad, step-Mum and 3 very young step-sisters and brother) at the hands
of a Jap. submarine, my younger brother, Wilfred, and I were moved to
Goa, to continue our education at St. Thomas's High School in Aldona -
while my elder brother(Joseph) joined the Jesuits after a brief spell
working in a Shipping company..
I still recall, with great affection, those early years at St. Paul's in
Belgaum,
Thanks for the memory, dear Marcos.
Warm regards.

[Goanet] DONG WHAT IS EXPEDIENT

2019-02-05 Thread John Eric Gomes
DOING WHAT IS RIGHT AGAINST EXPEDIENT
I was happy to see the DGP firm on implementing the law as against the
politicians and public law breakers causing chaos, accidents and death on the
roads not following the traffic rules and blaming the Traffic Sentinels. The
ridiculous arguments of potographing girls for use in soliciting prostitution,
right to privacy and so on are laughable. So is not wanting to wear helmets and
our politicians wanting to apease their vote banks, never mind what is lawful
and doing what is right. And the hypocracy of piously going to religious places
also preaching ensuring law and justice equally to all whilst indulging in
cheap popularity beats me! The other day a girl broke the rules at a traffic
light, and why cannot a Sentinel photograph and report this? She tells me she
could'nt stop rolling over the zebra crossing endangering pedestrians. I
brought to her notice that she should slow down when the yellow light comes on,
so easily halt before the stop line! Hardly any of the vehicle drivers do this.
How can we ever have road safety if educated people and even our senior
politicians cannot understand this?Yes, the police need to be more proactive in
implementing all the traffic rules without fear or favor, public more
disciplined and politicians generally not interfere.

[Goanet] Three Cheers for Whom?

2019-02-05 Thread Joao Barros-Pereira
Three Cheers for Whom?

While I'm no fan of Vijay Sardesai, it appears to me he was not fully
understood recently when he compared Jesus Christ to Chief Minister
Manohar Parrikar. The hue and cry was unnecessary, and in my opinion,
a knee jerk reaction.

As Vijay Sardessai is not a Christian, we can assume he is similar to
millions of other non-Christians in that he considers Jesus Christ to
be a man, and not the son or only son of Goa. As he is a Hindu it is
possible he considers Jesus Christ to be the son of God in the Hindu
meaning of the term: individual consciousness or individual soul; in
which case we are all sons of God. And, of course, this is a
traditional Hindu understanding, not some special point of view. What
is his opinion I have no idea: I don't know what he thinks as I have
not spoken to him; and I have not spoken to him as I have don't know
and have never met him. What I say is on a theoretical level.

A lot of the major religions of the world do not accept Jesus Christ
as the son of God in the Christian understanding of the term. In fact,
the great majority do not: the other two religions from the same
stream, Islam and Judaism - the oldest and original seed - also does
not accept the Christian point of view regarding Jesus Christ being
the son of God. In Buddhism and Jainism there is no problem as the
followers do not believe in God, and there is no problem of son or
only son of God.

If human beings are body and soul, allow Jesus Christ to build bridges
for the soul and Chief Minister Manohar to build bridges for the body.
What is the problem or contradiction? Vijay says he is not equating
but making an analogy; an analogy usually refers to an aspect; in this
case, the physical and not spiritual even though we are both. So what
is the problem?

Where I disagree with Vijay Sardesai is on another issue: his massive
U-turn after the election. He criticized the BJP with great zeal and
determination for a couple of years prior to the elections, and then
did a turnaround and formed a coalition government with them which
surprised a lot of people in Goa, including his own supporters. Now, I
fail to see how this is a matter of building bridges of trust or any
other variety on any level. Can he realistically expect people to
trust him in future? No, this is no bridge; it is closer to the Berlin
Wall which was destroyed finally and was not a cakewalk but a seismic
event. Will it be the same for Vijay Sardesai?

He says the coalition government will continue by hook or by crook. He
is a politician of enormous acumen, and so what's cooking? One
possibility is this: if the MGP withdraws support to the coalition
government, then can we expect three members of the Congress Party to
cross over, maybe jump over or even fly or use the latest technology
to get to the other side but which is at present a top, closely
guarded secret. Other political parties probably have a well thought
out plan B, too.The MLAs of the Congress Party have proven again and
again how big and warm their hearts are, and how they willingly fall
in love with any government in power - for a price, of course. Are
some members of the Congress Party ready to go - like a take out?

Goan politics is always a story with a surprise ending which makes the
writer O. Henry who is famous for his stories of surprise endings look
like a school boy. When will the real men appear, and make their move?

When they will do so, we do not know for now; however, when they have
made their move, we will all know!
