[Goanet] NEED TO LIBERATE OUR TEMPLES OF LEARNING FROM POLITICAL DIRTY TRICKS

2021-10-19 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Unlike our good old College days, now the Student Council elections in the
Colleges and University are fought in dirty political style, with patronage
in money and muscle Power by political parties. This is a step in the wrong
direction and portends grave consequences. We have even witnessed
candidates being kidnapped. Is this the way to prepare our future
politicians? Is this conducive to harmony that must prevail in and around
the educational campus?

And, in the midst of all this, when a teacher remains "neutral" and is not
expressing a view, due to his own personal political affiliation, he/she is
failing in enabling an authentic debate on socio–economic issues crucial
for developing our students' vision. They must leave the educational campus
with all the tools they need to actively engage themselves on the political
turf in the future.

With political parties having infiltrated the Temples of learning, no
wonder today, we do not see the rock solid student unity that Goa
witnessed in the late 70’s and 80’s when the Student Power based on fact
and conviction, was a very vibrant force for good to be reckoned with.

It may now be too late to reverse the clock and sanitise the educational
institutions from the political broth. Nonetheless an effort in this
direction must persist in the best interest of the student community so
that they are moulded in schools and colleges in the right perspective.

Fully a third of the locals here believe that they are protected from above and

The other two thirds believe in divine protection and vaccines.

I have yet to hear of a single case of a “faith healer” going into a hospital

[Goanet] Women reservation in UP is bound to upset the apple cart

2021-10-19 Thread Nelson Lopes
Women reservation in UP

PRIYANKA has stolen the thunder by her announcement. Women reservation of
33% has not gone through and has been confined to limbo . THE male
dominated opposition offered stiff resistance to Congress move by egoistic
attitude. The BJP even with its majority shelved the issue on
backburner.Women reservation has hardly crossed 15 to 20%.. it is Mamta
that has alloted 30 % and the only female CM in the country. Priyanka may
have decided so because the caste ,religious politics in UP is a losing
proposition. This type of gesture even though is stated to be ice breaker,
it has to be seen as cascading effect in the other parts of the country.
.Women. empowerment is certainly desirable to show empathy to women issues
like rapes,safety, education, dowry,and female foeticide.Women have
increasingly fared well in lower rung of administration including UP..Why
the resistance to take it to the next level?
The issue that CWC has just 3 members, or Priyamka has not announced her
candidature ,or her willingness to be CM candidate in no way undermines a
path breaking master stroke. IT may not result in landslide movement of
women votes towards congress Women have been Chief Minister, PM. CHIEF
JUSTICE, SPEAKER PRESIDENT, GOVERNOR DURING CONGRESS REGIME
In India women voters are increasing even irrespective of male influence.
Women voters are more consistent about their sacred duty. It is the women
voters who tilt the scales of winning or losing
Politicians have realized women factor and women centric schemes are
deliberately directed to that end to molify them with success The example
in Bihar about prohibition had salutary effect that made visible
difference. RESERVATION of women in various spheres of life has led to
their empowerment however miniscule exercise compared to their population .
Women in any state are close to male population and are sure voters
compared to men.Bribing them directly is non productive too. Reservation of
post of Sarpanchas, mayor's at lower rung of administration have fulfilled
the purpose
Women are more educated fighting for equality and issues of women
liberation
Enrolment in army Navy airforce and military academies by directives of
court has sent a strong message
Congress bold statement in UP cannot be dismissed as an act towards female
friendly election gimmick..The other political parties will be compelled to
follow suit so as not to perceived as anti women and gender bias and
discriminatory
Politicians are aware that women factor in elections to day is to be
weighed more seriously than caste and religious affiliations of the past
wins.
Women power is here to stay with women liberation, education , employment
and social emphaty against gender bias

[Goanet] GLIMPSES of CHURCH HISTORY: 1000 - 1100 CE

2021-10-19 Thread Eddie D'Sa

GLIMPSES OF CHURCH HISTORY: Period:1000-1100 CE

"Times New Roman"">Count Gregory
SylvesterII(999-1003) was noted for his learning. He is said to have
introduced Arabicnumerals into Europe. His next 3 successors, elected by
dominant factions ofthe time, were undistinguished. The influential
Count Gregory of Tusculum thenstepped in and got his son Theophylact, a
layman, elected as Pope Benedict VIII. Hewas soon ousted by a rival
claimant, Gregory but was restored in 1014 by KingHenry II of Saxony
(Germany). The pope rewarded the King by crowning him HolyRoman emperor
in 1022. Benedict was succeeded by his brother as Pope John XIX.About
this time, King Canute of newly formed England visited Rome and
wasimpressed. “A great assembly of nobles was present. I spoke with the
Emperorhimself and the Sovereign Pope about the needs of my people,
English andDanes…”

PopeBenedict IX
In 1032, Count Gregory’s grandson, another Theophylact, became Pope
BenedictIX. He was 14 (some say no more than 11). Six months later, a
rival factionplotted to murder him in St Peter’s basilica but took
fright when an eclipse ofthe sun occurred on the day, turning the
interior and all faces an eerie‘yellow and saffron’! The pope’s Tusculan
supporters smuggled him out of Rome.

The young Benedict went through the motions of office:celebrating high
mass at St Peters, appointing bishops, presiding overcouncils. But he
led a dissolute life. St Peter Damian (1007-72), doctor of thechurch,
said: “The wretch, from thebeginning of his pontificate to the end of
his life, has feasted on immorality.”
Eventually a Roman faction expelledhim after 12 years in office as unfit
to rule. A Bishop John was installed asPope Sylvester III in 1045. He
ruledfor some three uneasy months when Benedict was restored by a
Tusculan group.Sylvester fled to his tribesmen in the Sabine Hills.

Papacysold
Opposition to Pope Benedict grew.He continued to be “devoted to
pleasure” as Pope Victor II was to write and hadplundered the church
treasury. About 1045, he had set his eyes on a beautifulcousin but her
father, Girard de Saxo, insisted that Benedict must abdicate aspope
before he could marry her. He agreed but first decided to sell the
papaloffice itself to his godfather, John Gratian. The price: about 1500
pounds ofgold in weight. Gratian, a goodChristian and head priest of St
John’s church, had received innumerablecomplaints about Benedict’s
conduct. Gratian’s money was his own, meant for therepair of Rome’s
great churches. He paid it to Benedict in a desperate bid tosave St
Peters from total disrepute. His godson retired to the Alban Hills.

Gratian took over as Gregory VI in 1045. There was barelyenough to pay
for the day-to-day running of the court. Anarchy prevailed inRome and
the papal states, bandits thronged the roads and highways,
clericalcelibacy was observed more in the breach. Within a year,
Sylvester III again laidclaim to the papacy supported by his tribal
faction. Benedict, rejected by hislady love, also decided to return.
Late in 1046, Rome had three popes, eachpowerless to eject the other
two.
In desperation, a group of Romancitizens and priests appealed to King
Henry III to take over Romeand clear the mess. He arrived on 20 December
1046. Benedict promptly fled toTusculum. Sylvester was imprisoned as an
imposter while Pope Gregory VIadmitted: “Simony had entered into my
election…I must be deposed.” He wasexiled to Germany.

Henry III appointed Clement II as the new pontiff who inturn obliged by
making Henry Holy Roman Emperor. On Clement’s death in 1047,Benedict
returned and reclaimed the papal office for the second time. In
July1048, Emperor Henry III again returned to Rome and this time
Benedict fled forgood and out of history. It is not clear how he died.

The Great Schism
Benedict IX’s successor, Damascus II, died within a year and
wassucceeded by Pope Leo IX. The finalyear of Leo’s reign, 1054, is
noted for the formal break between the Latin andOrthodox churches
through mutual excommunications by the Pope in Rome and thePatriarch in
Constantinople. The break or schism between East and West stillstands.
[A major point at dispute (hold your breath) is whether the Holy Spirit
proceeds from the Father or via his Son!]

PopeGregory VII
Hildebrand of Tuscany, chaplain toGregory VI, had witnessed Emperor
Henry III depose and humiliate him. Theincident had etched deeply into
his mind. He had accompanied Gregory into exileinto Germany and rose to
be prior at the Benedictine abbey of Cluny. His famespread and he became
advisor to four pontiffs, from Victor II to Alexander II(see Table). At
the latter’s funeral in 1073, Hildebrand was publicly acclaimedas the
new pope. He took the name GregoryVII. All papal appointments needed the
Emperor’s approval and, much againsthis will, Gregory was forced to ask
this of 17-year old Emperor Henry IV. Hedecided to end this prerogative

2021-10-19 Thread Rajan Parrikar
Patrice suggests that I seek 'guidance' from Frederick Noronha to put my
work under a Creative Commons license. Thanks, but no thanks.

First of all, I don't need guidance from Frederick Noronha on anything. He
has lied and smeared people publicly here on Goanet with no retraction and
no apologies when he has been called out (and those have been numerous
occasions).

Secondly, while I contribute to charitable causes and make available my

my work via CC. The kind of work I do takes a hell of a lot of time,
effort, and money. Creative Commons may be ideal for dabblers like

these years. And yet people steal, and to top it all, I get gratuitous

[Goanet] Testimony

2021-10-19 Thread Camillo Fernandes
Thank you Roland for pointing out that the post does not relate to my late
mother who I lost her years ago.

Eddie, if you read Camillo?s post carefully, you will realize he is not talking
about his own mother but that of a priest he refers to as Fr Maneesh.

I may add that in life we have to see the negatives as well as the positives.
We should bear in mind that there are bad apples in every profession be it
doctor, police, priest, lawyer, teacher etc. Recently a policeman raped and
murdered an innocent girl Sarah in the UK who was walking all alone Does that
mean all policemen can't be trusted and are murderers?

All I did was just shared the post and I am in no way connected or promoting
it. Readers can make their own conclusions.

Thanks again.
Camilo Fernandes

[Goanet] The Eternal Sunset of Vamona Navelcar (O Heraldo, 19/10.2021)

2021-10-19 Thread V M
“O meu passado é tudo quanto não consegui ser,” said Vamona Navelcar to me
at our first meeting almost two decades ago, and then, with his
characteristically mischievous smile, the great artist translated the line
from Fernando Pessoa’s *Book of Disquiet* for my benefit: “my past is
everything that I have failed to be.”

>From our vantage, of course, after Navelcar passed away in hospital
yesterday at the age of 92, we cannot fail to recognize the historic
achievements he piled up on his remarkable life journey from idyllic
Pomburpa on the Mandovi riverbank to the Escola de Belas Artes in Lisbon in
1955, then Mozambique as well as Portugal again, before returning to root
anew in his ancestral home in 1982.

To begin with, there’s his tremendous body of work – albeit uncatalogued
and haphazardly scattered – which demands reckoning alongside the most
significant oeuvres of our times, with equal value to Goa (and thus India),
Mozambique (so, more broadly, Africa) and Portugal (which means Europe and
the West). The fact that appropriate recognition failed to occur during his
lifetime, for an artist who very much knew his worth, is our lasting shame
and collective cultural failure.

Beyond the treasure trove of paintings, sketches and drawings, however, we
are eternally indebted for the kind of man Navelcar chose to be, and the
unforgettable inspiration of his way of being. This diminutive,
soft-spoken, and outwardly serene gentleman was actually, in his own words
to me, “a volcano on the inside.” He was an indomitable force, of an
exceedingly rare moral calibre.

It showed in his art, which often returned to the theme of his homeland’s
desecration by its own people, whom he aptly depicted as monsters. And it
shone incandescent in his life’s most crucial moments: in Lisbon, when he
lost his scholarship rather than denounce the end of colonialism in Goa; in
Mozambique, where he was imprisoned in a jungle prison camp alongside the
students he loved with the purest of hearts; and throughout his last
decades in India, where he disdainfully refused to kowtow to political
vicissitudes, or back down to majoritarian cultural policing.

These choices made Navelcar an outlier, and perpetual outsider, which - it
has to be acknowledged – the artist relished, and used to fuel his creative
foment. With puckish glee, he’d remind you about being unjustly overlooked,
even – with great humorous effect – at ceremonies when he was actually the
chief guest. I recall his doing so at the grand debut of the Adil Shah
palace into the public domain as an art and culture centre in 2011, when he
predicted sardonically that neither artists like him, nor the public, would
ever get the space. Years later, after the spectacular galleries were
indeed hijacked by irresponsible officials, he took pains to remind me he
had been right.

The US-based Goan academic R Benedito Ferrão pointed out in his perceptive
2013 essay *A Suitcase Full of Continents: Vamona Navelcar as Performance
Artist*, that these kinds of quixotic actions and attitudes allowed the
artist to flourish in his most cherished role: the raconteur, dealing
expertly from “the imbricated stories of nations, peoples, and himself
[and] juggling absurdity and purposefulness as the twinned but often
indiscernible facets of postcolonial societies in flux.”

By that juncture, it is some consolation to note that Goa’s emergent
generation of artists and intellectuals had finally come around to become
enamoured by Navelcar. His artwork now found many champions, and was
displayed at the Serendipity Arts Festival 2017 as well as
*Goa/Portugal/Mozambique:
The Many Lives of Vamona Navelcar*, an utterly charming and heartfelt
exhibition in the same year, at the Fundação Oriente premises in Fontainhas.

In the lovely catalogue published alongside, Goa College of Art professor
Vishvesh Kandolkar recounted that in his own first meeting with Navelcar in
2015, the artist gifted him a copy of Fernando Pessoa’s poems in the
original Portuguese (which the younger man had recently commenced
studying). He says, “it was an implied message from this fellow-Goan,
hinting that Pessoa is also a part of Goa’s history, and therefore learning
about the Portuguese poet would only enrich my understanding of our past.”

Kandolkar contends that, “Pessoa is not just a muse and an inspiration to
Navelcar. Rather, their lives bear remarkable similarities.” He lists some:
aspirational departure from the homeland, seeking fortune in Africa, the
purposeful utilization of pseudonymity, compulsive creativity even on
scraps of paper and discarded newsprint, and huge unexplored archives that
will be assessed posthumously.

This is an appealing analogy, and does probably underlie some of Navelcar’s
intense fascination for the Portuguese poet who became globally acclaimed
only many years after his death.

But could the same thing happen for Vamonbab, who certainly deserves it in
every way? That would require a major paradigm

Re: [Goanet] Power of the Eucharist

2021-10-19 Thread Frederick Noronha
Science tells us that "faith healing" can and does work. However
"unscientific" this may seem, there are valid reasons for it:

Faith Healing Shouldn't Work, but It Does
https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-human-beast/201103/faith-healing-shouldnt-work-it-does

As far as sexual abuse by men of religion (as well as others, and not just
men) goes, that is an admitted problem. But it is unrelated to what we are
discussing above, isn't it? Or do we just want to reflect our own biases
here? FN
