[Goanet] Indian Ambassador attends first Goan Function in Kuwait
Indian Ambassador attends first Goan Function in Kuwait Prince Jacob's drama 'Zaiat Zage' was more than what one could expect from a seasoned, professional showman of the Konkani stage. The drama has more in it than just entertain-ment. The message is a hard-hitting clarion call to all Goans to wake up and unite, or perish. The tale enacted with plenty of humor is presented in fluent style and is a real treat for the audience. This tongue-in-cheek drama looks at how people from other states flock down to the beautiful state of Goa and set up their businesses there and how Goans grow to become dependent on them. The well attended show staged on 13th November 2009 at the Daiya Fencing Club Hall, Kuwait, was organized by Kala Mogui Kuwait to celebrate the 7th anniversary of its existence in Kuwait. Dominic Araujo and Felix Fernandes were the main coordinators of the event. H.E. Shri Ajai Malhotra, Ambassador of India was the chief guest on the occasion, the first Goan event that His Excellency has attended in Kuwait and surprisingly his first ever Konkani drama which he took pleasure in watching for over 2 hours till the half time. Alban Pinto was the guest of honor. Other special invitees included Muriel Alphonso, President - IWA, Fr. Teo Fernandes, Fr. Frank, Fr. Lionel Braganza, Fr. Melwyn D'cunha and Joseph Elvira D'Souza. The evening began with the lighting of the traditional lamp at the hands of the ambassador and other dignitaries present. Prince Jacob his Troupe will take the stage as scheduled to meet the chief guest's schedule. Book your seats in advance to avoid last minute disappointment and the organizers seek full cooperation from the Konkani loving people and thank in advance. For reservations please contact Raja Stores, Kuwait City - Tel: 22412970 or organizers: 99391452, 97439165, 24726524 or email: kalamo...@gmail.com ON PRINCE JACOB: I was crying bitterly at the death of my father and suddenly, I heard the audience laugh, recalling a scene from Roseferns' Akant (one of his early dramas) he says, From that instant I realized that the audience expected only comedy from me. Several laughter filled years later, Antonio Pereira crowned Minguel Jacob Carmo Luis Fernandes, the Prince of Comedy after a laugh-riot role in Tapot hence was born Prince Jacob. It began at a tender age of 13 for the then Don Bosco Oratory student when late Rosario Dias introduced him in Chuk Hanvench Adarli, ever since, there was no looking back, recalling his Oratory days he remembers his mentor Fr. Henry Torra, who instilled a certain discipline in him and bro, Felix who imparted valuable tips in composing songs and skits. A front runner in singing, acting and debates, Jacob owes his success as an able orator to teacher, Fatima Rebello who shaped him up initially. They say it is dangerous to give a mike to an orator and the dog, a bone, laughs Jacob. The keen interest for tiatrs was developed in the formative years. I used to accompany the late Souza Ferrao for his plays and manage to get a free entry for his tiatrs. Ferrao was encouraging and even introduced Jacob to Melody King, late Alfred Rose, who predicted potential in him. Late Jacinto Vaz Charlie Chaplin of Konkani stage gave his budding career the necessary thrust by constant encouragements. Jacob's young talent was then tapped by star directors like Ligorio Fernandes and Roseferns an in 1985, teaming up with brother Humbert and Milagres he established, Prince Jacob Production. In his initial days, Jacob was known for directing tiatrs beginning with the alphabet P, I did 25 tiatrs right from Pinzrem to Padri, while one tiatr was being staged my audience would suggest the title of my next venture, he recalls. After exhausting P he went on to R with Rodonaka. Today he commands a dedicated fan following not just in Goa but across India, Gulf States UK. To tiatr loving Goans spresd over the world, Prince Jacob represents a vibrant brand ambassador of contemporary tiatrs. A serious actor who graduated to comedy, Jacob is a born entertainer, To have the ability to provoke laughter is a God-given talent. He says. I thank God as I feel I have helped the audience in putting their sorrows away, Jacob reveals saying if he wasn't a tiatrist he could have been a priest. Jacob has dared to bring bold innovations to tiatrs from making a Doberman act in Pavnnek, doing magic in Raza Raani and four roles in Rupnem based on the Marathi hit-play Sahi-re-Sahi. Jacob took his entire star cast to Mumbai to watch it before doing his Konkani adaptation and he watched it 12 times. Jacob's works included 16 centuries in tiatrs which have been appreciated by his countless fans who have helped him bag awards like Goa Post, Gulab and Kala Academy. Recently, Jacob is ruling the air waves through Big FM 92.7 as its celebrity RJ. I have entered people's hearts through tiatrs, now I want to enter their homes, says the producer of 11 audio releases. Jacob feels, as a tiatrist can be very exhausting when you are an actor, writer, producer and director, and to elucidate the dilemma to his children, Jacob introduced his eldest daughter Jewel Valankanni in Passport and recently son Jason in Viswas. Now Emerald is beginning to realize that it may be her next, he says of his youngest daughter. Apart from tiatrs, Jacob has also produced Padri a film that has so far been screened 315 times it ran for a record two months (4 shows daily) at Margao and two weeks in Panjim, and also one show each in State of Bahrain Kuwait. His other VCDs on St. Francis Xavier and Fr. Jose Vaz have also been well received. In his latest, Zaiat Zage, Jacob is giving a clarion call to Goans to wake-up and defend Goa. I foresee what will happen ahead and portray it in my script, he says. it's a must for
[Goanet] Indian Football Federation-Kuwait adds a new chapter
IFF added a new chapter by organizing the matches on the artificial pitch (Turf) Indian Football Federation Kuwait IFF added a new chapter by organizing the matches on the artificial pitch (Turf) at the Dayaa grounds on November 6th 2009. It was an overwhelming experience for all the players to play on this novel surface and the credit should go to the high profile members of Indian Football Federation Kuwait for arranging the new ground at such a short notice as the previously scheduled ground was under maintenance. The 1st match in the IFF tournament was kicked off between the mighty DHL v/s the energetic Don Bosco Oratory (DBO). But the day clearly belonged to DBO and especially Leroy Rodrigues from DBO who scored a hat-trick and single handedly took the game away from DHL. The game commenced at 7:20 AM and within 15 mins after the kick off Leroy put DBO 1-0 up by cleverly placing the ball behind the net from a ball that was superbly crossed by Leo Rodrigues. But within minutes DHL fought back and equalized with the help of Roland Fernandes who neatly placed the ball to the right of the goal keeper. The score remained 1-1 at half time. DBO clearly dominated the second half of the game and Leroy once again proving a thorn for the DHLs defense as he scored 2 more goals and completed a hat-trick. DHL tried its best to make a come back into the game but all its efforts went in vain as Steven Rodrigues scored the fourth goal for DBO and sealed the game. By the end of the game the score remained DBO (4) - DHL (1). Leroy Rodrigues Match 2 was played between the experienced Sky Net team V/S the seasoned Veterans. The game started with both teams trying their best to draw 1st blood but both the teams came extremely close in doing so. Fortunately for Sky Net the first goal came in the form of a self goal that deflected off the defender of the veterans team leaving the goal keeper stranded. But the sprit of the veterans team did not deter. As veterans players tried their best to equalize. Sky net on the other hand pressed equally harder to score more goals but the walls of veterans which is formed of defenders like Mervyn Fernandes and Teddy Pinto did not allow Sky Net to succeed. By the end of the first half the score remained 1-0. 15 mins into the second half sky net scored another goal with the help of Binoj Cheruvathor. The scored remained the same till the end of the match. Sky Net (2) - Veterans (0). Friday 13th November 2009 will see the Youth of Dominic Savios battling against the dynamic AVC and all eyes will be on the second match for the day to watch the skills and control of MAC and Indians that will be playing against each other for the very first time in the IFF League. The matches were officiated by the member organization and the only professional one in the business Indian Football Referee Association IFRA which is an important part of IFF. Another notable factor was the presence of the families of the teams attending the matches which were missing all these years. This is due to the professionalism and discipline inculculated by the Indian Football Federation. Towards the end of the matches players were seen requesting the IFF Kuwait officials to conduct the whole season on the same pitch. It was a joy to those who experienced it and pain to those who missed the opportunity. According to officials of IFF Kuwait three grass grounds in Kuwait are earmarked this year for the whole season. Upcoming Fixtures are as follows: 13th Nov (7:00 AM): AVC V/S Dominic Savios 13th No (8:30 AM): Santos United V/S Indians 20th Nov (7:00 AM): DBO V/S MAC 20th Nov (8:30 AM): Veterans V/S ACV Sai Sainath Rajkumar Sarode sai_sar...@gmail.com

[Goanet] Comments on the Global Goan Convention 2009 held in Muscat
World Goan Convention - 2009 in Muscat Carmo Santos Kuwait Monday, November 09, 2009 I take this opportunity to thank the organizers for their hospitality and gracious attention to our Goan delegation from Kuwait during our visit to Oman for the Goan Convention. The whole programme was well presented and coordinated and my hats off to all the organizers and your team. Personally, it is my opinion that the speeches and presentations meteculiously put up by Mr.Yusuf Abdulla Sheikh, Dr.Oscar Rebello, N. Shivdas, Simon D'Silva, Dr.Prajal Sakhandande, ex-Speaker and Tiatr Academy Goa President Mr..Tomazinho Cardozo, Mr.Satish Nambiar, Mr.Ulas Kamat, Dr.Lad and Mr.Clearance Pinto were the highlights from the participants as there was a strong message in their powerful words and facts that need the attention of the Goa Government. The Indian Ambassador's generosity and cooperation is well noted and I wish him my best regards. The media coverage (Times of Oman, Oman Observer, etc.as well as daijiworld.com and the Gulf-Goans e-Newsletter) was commendable, prompt and highlighted the proceedings of the Goan Convention. The Team work was excellent. If we all Goans in the gulf join hands and works collectively then we can achieve the goals. Once again my sincere appreciation on behalf of our Goan delegation from Kuwait. [Goanet] Dedication of Our Love to Mae Dos Pobres - A very happy feast to you all
Dedication of Our Love to Mae Dos Pobres - A very happy feast to you all Conceicao Teotonio Gomes Nuvem Kuwait Parishioners President Desk: Let us not reacts who we are.nor try to demonstrate our power..neither profess our beneficial achievements on the tower...But honestly let us seek re-solutions and commitments to the benefits in the process of our selfless affiliations towards our sacrificial and needful hours to others. Dear Fellow Brothers Sisters As resolved by the Committee and Members of Nuvem Kuwait Parishioners, I would like to inform you all our brethren that the offering of our Traditional i.e. 30th Annual Thanksgiving High Mass in honor of our Mae Dos Pobres Feast is being celebrated on 8th November, 2009 at the Holy Family Cathedral, Kuwait at 4.30 p.m. All the members and our esteemed friends are hereby cordially invited to share a moment of adoration and peace on this great occasional day of our feast. While commemorating this great feast day, I take this opportunity on behalf of Nuvem Kuwait Parishioners in the capacity of its President ship would like to convey our Best Wishes to all saying Boas Fiestas to all our members in Kuwait and our brethren in Goa - at Nuvem Parish Church residents too. Let us share a moment of prayers for our betterment of the Village in general and beseech to seek our Mothers support to help at this hour and guide us at our work place and keep us safe and happy under her spiritual guidance all the times. Apropos ! to remind you all, once again that some of us may not aware of the facts that we (NKP) has confirmed ourselves as an Individual entity though our mindset were in hundred folds, and that is to say that we have enrolled in Black White in the books of our Nuvem Parochial enshrined Ledgers by concelebrating the Feast of our Mae Dos Pobres - NKP-Presidentship in the year 2001, duly approved and affiliated by the Confraria Committee Members of Igreja de Jesus Maria e Jose i.e. Holy Family Church, Nuvem. Moreover, I along with some of our committee members vividly remember the generous acclamation and reverence of this order of spiritual activity we have received from every corner of our Village was in fact unforgettable and to be called as a Milestone due to the fact the schedule and the organization of the events of the days were in very true image of the spirit of ***selfless love. The zeal and affectional moment was truly then, when every Former President of this traditional feast was being honored on each day of the Salve for the respective nine days of the Novenas and then being the oldest President alive and to be lucky to have this honor is Mr. Casmiro Gomes - from Murda Grande has been given to hand the baton image i.e. Sceptre (Vaar) of Lady Mae Dos Pobres on the feast day on 04-11-2001. (*** This is in line and in Obligation commitment we obeyed of the Clause in the Books of the Confraria that No simple normal Confraria member can hold/handle honor of the Vaar - unless he being crowned as the President of the Feast/or unless celebrated as an President). It has been my privilege to serve and nurture the NKP President ship chair and herewith gives me a great pleasure to note at this time of writing, because since long then for the last 3 Decades i.e. 30 serene years we the Nuvem Kuwait Parishioners got together with meager members of 10-20 to form this profound unity of love and tranquility amidst ourselves to retracts our favors and console our hearts by way of some offerings and started with a simple solemn mass towards Mother of Poor. And eventually this has had happened every year on the 1st Sunday of the month of November, which had grown over 100 of our hearts in abundantly with solace and sincere co-operation with thoughtful contributions from every members of NKP unity. And the result of this retrospective consolation and understandings we have reached to the level of celebrating our SILVER JUBILEE in the year 2004. Keeping this event of silver linings in our warm hearts we had a very generous GET-TOGETHER warm up Party to keep every member in touch in our future endeavor and the response was a huge in Holiday Inn Restaurant and with pompous success. (Reflect on some of the photos on the day of the event - courtesy of our NKP member, Professional Photographer Augusto Fernandes). Concluding with few words of my listings above and am being the founder co-coordinator of this Unity, I want to salute all the members of the NKP for being co-operative all the times for any given opportunity to serve us and especially at the time of the 2001-Feast Project which will be really imbibe and incur our hearts all the times. Though it is the same heart that cries and laugh with joys let us keep faith in our Mother of Poor all the times for our safety with her blessing too.. To be reconciled once again with a heavy heart that when we were terribly

[Goanet] Golden Jubilee celebration of St. Therese Church - Salmiya - Kuwait (today)
Golden Jubilee celebration of St. Therese Church - Salmiya The Rector Major Rev. Fr. Pascual Chavez, the Superior General of the international Don Bosco Society who is on a short visit to Kuwait will be concelebrating a Mass together with Bishop Camilo Balin as part of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of St. Therese Church, Salmiya at 1800 hrs today (November 3, 2009). Rev. Fr. Pascual Chavez then will attend a reception at 1900 hrs at the Indian English Academy School, Salmiya, before flying to India visiting the North East Region. The St. Therese Church which was inaugurated as Holy Redeemer Chapel in 1974 was born of a need that arose when residents from India began to converge on Salmiya and its neighbouring localities. The availability of Indian schools in the area was one of the reasons why a number of families settled here. Vast distances from Kuwait City (wherein is situated the Holy Family Cathedral), as well as in-sufficient transport facilities to and from the city might have contributed to a growing need for a place of worship so that the Catholic faithful could perform their weekly religious obligation. From a humble congregation of 40 faithful in 1959, the congregation now exceeds a thousand families! http://www.catholic-church.org/kuwait/salmiya.htm (GWNews)

[Goanet] Indian Ambassador's letter to the Indian Community in Kuwait
* G * O * A * N * E * T C * L * A * S * S * I * F * I * E * D * S * Planning to get married in Goa? www.weddingsetcgoa.com Making your 'dream wedding' possible From: Goan Cultural Centre goanculturalcentrekuw...@gmail.com -- Forwarded message -- From: K.Narsing Rao fslab...@indembkwt.org Date: Wed, Oct 14, 2009 at 12:04 PM To: goanculturalcentrekuw...@gmail.com Ambassador's letter to the Indian Community in Kuwait 14 October 2009 Dear Member of the Indian Community in Kuwait, In continuation of my letter of May 26, 2009, I provide an update on consular, welfare, and other initiatives that have since been undertaken by the Embassy. Consular and passport issues: On May 27, 2009, two new Indian Passport and Visa Service Centres were opened in Kuwait. Some of you helped publicise the change in a number of Indian languages, and I thank you for doing so. Issues that inevitably accompany such a fundamental transformation were reasonably quickly put behind us. Since late June 2009 we have maintained a turn-around delivery time of 3-4 working days after a passport/consular service application is made at the Service Centre. Our attestation service at the Embassy envisages return delivery normally within 45 minutes of submission of a document. In July 2009, the online registration form for Indian citizens on the Embassy website was upgraded to provide a confirmation when a completed registration form has been properly received. This week a Consular Open House procedure has been started at the Embassy from 1000 hrs to 1100 hrs and 1430 hrs to 1530 hrs on all working days. By it, the Consular Head or a senior Consular official would be available in the Embassy Consular Room and can be met without prior appointment to discuss any consular matter. In response to queries, kindly note that in case of demise of an Indian national in Kuwait, if the mortal remains have to be sent back to India for burial then the Embassy will, upon request, bear the full air transportation costs and all incidental expenditures associated with doing so in all deserving/needy cases. Welfare and Labour issues: While the approximately 580,000 strong Indian community is present in most segments of society in Kuwait, our initial thrust has been directed at addressing the welfare concerns of our workers, especially the 225,000 Indians who work in Kuwait under Visa No. 20. Of them roughly 150,000 are male domestic workers while about 75,000 are female domestic workers. 24 by 7 toll free phone helpline for Indian domestic workers (Visa No. 20): This helpline inaugurated on 9 August 2009 has systematized and enhanced our availability to an Indian domestic worker in distress. Earlier, the response outside office hours depended on whether the person receiving the call had appropriate linguistic abilities and knew how to properly log down a concern and respond to it. Now, telephone number 25674163 is accessible toll free from anywhere in Kuwait, functions round the clock through a multiple-line call-center, and provides us with a computerised print-out of incoming call details so that the calls can be tracked back to their source. More importantly, it is staffed by persons who can respond in Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Arabic and English. The helpline number is prominently front-paged on all job contracts of Indian domestic workers attested by the Embassy. As a result, new workers arriving here know, prior to their arrival, that if there is a problem someone is constantly available to them. Grievance redressal and support system: We have considerably strengthened our grievance redressal and support system mechanism in 2009 and can now reasonably promptly and effectively address grievances of Indian domestic workers (Visa No. 20) and project workers (Visa No. 18) in Kuwait. Since early this year Indian domestic workers in distress are being accommodated and looked after by the Embassy under a new arrangement, while their grievances are being addressed. On arrival, they are given a kit containing new clothes, all toiletries, and other essentials. They are also provided with bunk beds with full bedding, regular nutritious meals, and all basic amenities while they are with us. To keep them in reasonably good cheer, the common areas have a TV, with access to Indian cable channels, as well as a small music system with Indian music CDs. In case of repatriation of a domestic worker, an air ticket from Kuwait to the Indian airport nearest to their home plus sufficient cash to travel from that airport to their home town/village and pay for incidentals, is also routinely being provided by the Embassy. We now also have the

Alvito of East Bengal and Actress Rituparna Sengupta Related Links Teams a.. East Bengal Players a.. Alvito D'Cunha The brand ambassador for East Bengal shall now make an appearance on the big screen in a Bengalli movie where he would play himself. Alvito D'Cunha has been approached by a Tollywood director to make a special appearance in the movie called 'Aakashchua' which means to touch the sky. I have three scenes in the movie. Rituparna Sengupta is the lead actress and another new heroine is also part of the group, said Alvito excitedly. The Goan star was approached by the director, S.Chakrabarty following his return from the pre-season camp at Jagannath Puri. Since the muhurat (auspicious time for a start) was on Monday, the news finally came out. I was supposed to have my scenes in this week but since the ground isn't green at this point, we shall shoot sometime in the next month. Alvito isn't new to acting as he has acted in several one act plays in his hometown during festivals. I love acting and always would participate in plays during Christmas and other festivals for the Church. I hope everything goes well. The former Salgaocar player is pleased with his form and was relieved after scoring a goal with his right foot. I scored in the ASEAN Cup final with my right foot. The goal in Mumbai against Mahindra United was great as it came at a time when criticism was heavy. If I can score with my weaker foot, for sure I can with my stronger one, said the optimistic winger. Alvito has the opportunity to star for his club when they take on arch rivals Mohun Bagan on the 25th of this month. Rahul Bali. http://www.goal.com/

We saw with our own eyes how much he had done for our Goa and the people. He cast aside the order received from his High Command in Portugal, to return Goa in ashes to the Government of India, if at all the time permits. Today, if Goans are living in their beautiful Goa, it is because of our last Portuguese Governor. After he left Goa, he did not take his asylum in any of the Western countries, but went to Portugal and suffered humiliations and other punishments for the great heroic work he had done in his position as the last Governor of Goa, Daman and Diu. [Goanet] NEW KONKANI VCD RELEASED: GOAN FESTIVE NOSTALGIA by Kuwait-based AGGY DIAS
* G * O * A * N * E * T C * L * A * S * S * I * F * I * E * D * S * Planning to get married in Goa? www.weddingsetcgoa.com Making your 'dream wedding' possible GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994) http://www.yahoogroups.com/group/gulf-goans/http://www.goa-world.com NEW KONKANI VCD RELEASED: GOAN FESTIVE NOSTALGIA by Kuwait-based AGGY DIAS The local music industry is in great demand. both locally and internationally, thanks to the Goans spread out all over the world who regularly medicate themselves with lavish doses of Goan Konkani music. Whenever the pangs of homesickness get unbearable 'mandos', 'kantarans', 'dulpods', and other Konkanj songs are prescribed. Agnelo Dias better known by his stage name Aggy has added to their collection. Out with his second album 'Goan Festive Nostalgia', his album sings a different tune. In Aggy's words, It's an album that brings musicians into the limelight. A little elucidation will bring to light his novel exercise. Aggy is a musician who plays not only the guitar and keyboards but also the clarinet, drums, flute, saxophone and oboe. In his latest video album he has abundant use of wind instruments. Goans were always known to add their charm to occasions by playing their brass instrument. However, the number of these 'jolly boys' are on the decline. The result is that we are losing out on the beautiful sounds of these instruments. Besides using brass instruments this musician, who has also played in the Goa Symphony Orchestra, says that another highlight of his album is the concept of sing-a-long 'mandos' and 'dulpods'. These traditional Goan songs, presented in a contemporary instrumental style, invite you to sing along to the words that are printed beneath. So from 'Sorgar Uzvadd Noketrancho', 'Doriachen Lharari' to 'Ugdass Tela Mhaka', you can involve yourself with the song - a great way to herald a Konakani karaoke revolution. It is a nice way to learn these songs or teach it to children, he says. Aggy has included three of his own compositions, one that he composed way back in 1986. All three showcase the Goan spirit, especially when experienced as a community. The composition 'Jua' is his tribute to his native land of St Estevam. The old houses, landmarks and natural beauty all find a place in this song. The songs have been shot at various locales across Goa. Aggy admits that marketing and advertising add to the expenditure but nothing could be graver than the problem of piracy. Criss-crossing between Kuwait, where he works, and Goa, his home, Aggy says he plans to continue coming up with more albums. An upcoming assignment is one comprising of instrumental Gospel songs. One wonders why the penchant for instrumental music. Aggy does not take much time to answer the question. I can express myself best through instrumental music, he says. Guess that's what they mean when they say let the music do the talking. [This article has been first published in The Navhind Times (Wednesday, 09-09-2009, written by Clara A. ABOUT THE VILLAGE OF BENAULIM: Where does one begin while describing a village as vast and as blissful as Benaulim, which enjoys a pride of place in the coastal, beach-belt of Salcete? Tiny Goa's villages are birthplaces of men with lofty ideals, of distinguished clerics and several bishops, with India's first Cardinal thrown in for good measure. But Benaulim surely stands apart because on its sacred soil was born on April 21, 1651, Goa's only Saint - Blessed Jose Vaz, the Apostle of Sri Lanka. Benaulim is indeed an enchanting place, sandwiched between the golden sands that lace the Arabian azure in the West and the meandering Sal river, which sprays its East with green grace and grandeur. The balmy coastal air interacts with the riverine charm and tranquillity, to work up a totally exotic ambience, which has added Benaulim to Goa's burgeoning tourist map. Seraulim and Colva closeup on Benaulim in the West and North respectively, while Varca keeps watch on its southern extremity. Urbanised Margao and Navelim too share borders with Benaulim. Fortunately, the extensive stretch of soggy fields halts the march of Margao's building brigade. Hence the handsomely large population of nearly 17,000 is well removed from the din and dust of urbanity, content to bask in its sunny, rural lifestyle beneath the benign shade of the swaying palms. Geologically, the uphill portion is made up of red laterite while basalt rocks exist near Bhirond. Overall, the diverse elements merge into a magical concoction, which inspired maestros like Conego Antonio Joao Dias (1914), Mestre Joao Antonio (Jantu), Mestre Manuelinho, Dr Roque Correia Afonso, Antonio Francisco Sardinha, Sebastiao Barreto and others to compose passionate and highly lyrical manddos. Manddo-dulpod combinations like Bannaleantu muzo gaum-um, Danddea Caetan Butiqueiru and dulpods like Aitra' Sonta' Missa' Otam, Monti Sokolo Ghor Bannale and others are sung with gusto by Bannalekars till today. Bannalekars, of course, are a rare breed. Render (toddy- tappers), who produce coconut feni, and ramponnkars (fishermen), who live by fishing, make up the bulk of the coastal population. In the good ole days when cold storages were unheard of, the excessive catch had to be dumped at the coconut groves. The grateful palms responded with a bountiful yield to make Benaulim the prime nursery of excellent coconuts. The Bannaulecho narl naturally rocks and rules the State's coconut index with some of Goa's major wholesalers like Hegde, Vithal Shet and Menino Bakar buffering the Benaulim subyard in Margao. [Goanet] Kuwait Indian Football New Season Updates
Kuwait Indian Football New Season Updates Kuwait: The Extra-Ordinary General meeting of the Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) with the football teams’ representatives held on 28th September 2009 at Village Inn, Kuwait City, was very chaotic with some times threatening to withdraw their teams from the KIFF fold and participation. It was a near failure to redress the important issues placed before KIFF relating to the smooth organizing of football tournaments, ground selection and referees. “The start of the season which was scheduled to start on 2nd October 2009 has now been further delayed as KIFF could not get qualified referees to carry on as well as a 'ground' ,” remarked a team’s representative who attended the meeting. It is to be also pointed out that the 'dictorial' ban on players - who are qualified members of an independent refereeing body [IFRA and whose contribution to football in Kuwait is well recognised and documented] - refusing to officiate 'as KIFF referees' was REMOVED courtesy to the efforts of some Goan clubs. This 'unjustified ban' was dictated by some members (some past-presidents of the Federation] and who often shuffle themselves from one team one year and next migrate to another team as representatives, just to show themselves attending meetings and be seen on press cuttings, with no worthwhile contribution. Such characters are also supported by one blogger for his own interest in soliciting event sponsorships. The so-called stalwarts [and often self-glorified] founder members of KIFF were shown the 'door' by the younger members at the house! This actually happened at the meeting and is now jokingly 'considered' one of the major highlights of the evening when one of the 'KIFF constitution interpreter' had to walk away from the meeting as his biased views and arrogant attitude was not tolerated by the members present. “Efforts to bring down the new KIFF managing committee is only because of destructive thinking and personal egos, but we will never be a part of such minds,” countered a Goan member of KIFF committee.. When asked about the rumours circulating on the Net, “KIFF is not dissolved and will not be dissolved at any time as all the football teams, players/members and organizers are passionate about the game.. but attitude and egos of 'seniors' have to be shelved,” remarked another football fanatic. We will compromise to reach at an amicable solution, as past KIFF president who served for a few terms was overheard as saying. It is also noted that a particular KIFF member had the audicity to welcome one particular club representative to join in to be the KIFF nominated 'referees administrator' to find a solution, when the same group exactly a year ago ensured that no newcomers can 'contest' general elections and KIFF president post and again passed on a 'resolution' contravening the KIFF constitution. This was pointed out by the two-year old club rep. which created a humourous situation for all. When questioned about the strength of suggested 'referees', KIFF could mutter just a 2-3 names, for which the team representatives expressed their displeasure. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, one should not forget Newton's Law, a long time Indian watching football from the Al-Sour Ground days lamented. In the meantime, there will be a 8-a-side one day football tournament on Friday, 2nd October 2009, with Indian Football Referees Association (IFRA) officiating at the Digital Grounds, Kuwait City, as per information received by www.goa-world.com last evening. It's high time KIFF recognises the fact that the spring time is the best to play 'football' in Kuwait rather than making the players sweat it out in 45 Degree heat. It is also to be observed that tournament matches are not played on important religious days of significance - as per the moods and fancies. And most importantly adhere to the KIFF constitution! _ I.F.R.A, K.I.F.F and the memory of late J.P.D'Mello The Indian Football Referees Association (I.F.R.A.) has been one organization which has given an immense goodwill to Indian football in Kuwait. Since 1980, the association has trained and recruited new referees as its members and provided services for football matches. The late J.P. D'Mello, Founder President of the Association was the one instrumental in forming the current Kuwait Indian Football Federation (K.I.F.F) and its constitution. His memory has been justly kept alive by KIFF through its affiliated Indian football teams/clubs/associations by naming the KIFF League after him. May his soul rest in peace. The Kuwait Indian Football Federation (K.I.F.F) established in 1983 controls all Indian expatriate football activities in Kuwait. In the recently concluded season, a total of 18 teams were

STAR STRUMMER TONY GOMES STAR STRUMMER The first musician to play the electric guitar in Hindi films, Goa's Tony Gomes also introduced Mohammad Rafi and Usha Iyer Uttup to sing Konkani songs for Chris Perry's compositions. A spotlight on a star which shone brightly, once upon a time. By: Walter Menezes (First appeared on Gomantak Times dated 23 Sept 2009) In the good old days, almost every church in Goa had its very own choirmaster. While the padri (priest) taught lasting values of life, the mestri (choirmaster) initiated the youngsters to discover the symbols of solfam (notes) and the magic of music. For many, the music school became the springboard to catapult them to fame and an illustrious career. Antonio Piedade Gomes of Vhoddlem-Bhatt, Quepem is one such Goan who worked with some of the best known music directors of Hindi cinema during his time. [A still from Konkani film, Nirmonn] Born in 1922, 'Tony' Gomes received his 'early lessons' from Caetano Philip Dias, the mestri of Quepem church and his seafaring father thought it best to send his 'exceptionally gifted' son to Bombay when still young. 'By the time I joined the music escola, Tony was already out of it,' Andre Bibiano Furtado of Quepem, who will turn 85 this December, told us. 'Much later, when I used to work for Mazagon Dock, I would join my friends at Bastanis for a cup of chai almost every Sunday. They would all talk so much about Tony Gomes. He lived in Wellington Terrace (in Dhobitalao) nearby,' Furtado filled in with more details. [Tony Gomes (seated, third from left) with his Rhythm Raiders.] Introduced to the film studios by Fr.. Aurelius Maschio, SDB, then principal of Don Bosco School, Matunga, where he studied and also fine-tuned his skills and mastered the violin and the guitar, Tony Gomes had his own band during the 'big band era' of Bombay (now Mumbai), Tony Gomes and his Rhythm Raiders (which was later christened as Tony Gomes and his Dance Band). His band was a regular sight at many parties and dances and they played at the New Year's Eve Ball of the Indian Navy practically every year in the 60's and early 70's. A long time member of Cine Musicians' Association, Tony Gomes was equally at ease with the Hawaiian guitar and the Spanish guitar and played for Ravi, Shankar Jaikishan, O P Nayyar, Laxmikant Payarelal, S D Burman, R D Burman, Hemant Kumar and V Shantaram. He was also instrumental in introducing Mohammad Rafi and Usha Iyer Uttup to sing Konkani songs for Chris Perry's compositions. [Mrs Indira Gandhi, Raj Kapoor and Tony Gomes (from family album] In the maiden issue of Konkan Entertainment covering '50 Years of Konkani Cinema' and dedicated to Al Jerry Braganza, the Father of Konkani Cinema, Andrew Greno Viegas, the magazine's editor (and researcher, too) makes a mention of Anthony Gomes as the first musician 'to play the electric guitar in Hindi films'. 'Chic Chocolate, who was called as the Harry James of India, Tony Gomes, Antonio Sequeira (who later taught music at Kala Akademi) and Johnny Rodrigues were in a class of their own,' John Claro, playwright of the Purtugez Kolvont fame informed us. Himself a Quepemkar, John Claro who was working for Norwich Union before its subsequent merger with Life Insurance Corporation of India recounted, 'I remember doing an article, somewhere in 1950, lauding the efforts of my fellow Quepemcares, Tony Gomes and Antonio Sequeira in the city of Bombay. It was published on Chabuk, the bilingual weekly in Konkani and English which was then edited by L M Henry D'Souza.' 'Musicians would practice for days together before the recording. Persons passing by Wellington Terrace (residential colony) would at once know if Gomes was practicing. His music was unique,' John Claro said, speaking of the high standards that this musician had set for himself. 'He was exceptional,' confirmed Abdonio Rodrigues, Goa's famous drummer when we met him at his Curchorem residence at the foot of the Guardian Angel Church hillock. The sun had set and night was sneaking in. Soon the church bell tolled and it was time for aimori (angelus). 'He was much sought-after by the music directors of Hindi films,' he added after the prayers were over. 'So much was happening in Bombay during those days. We musicians were very much in demand,' Abdonio told us after we showed him a clip from Frank Fernand's Konkani movie Nirmonn, where the camera zeroes in on Tony Gomes, focusing on the speed with which his deft fingers glide along the neck of the guitar, playing a passage of 'dense' music as in a cadenza, during the unforgettable Nach Atanche song. Abdonio, who played the drums for the movie recalled, 'This was shot in Mehbooba Studio in Bandra.' Tony Gomes can also be seen on the violin in the opening song in the film, Amchem Noxib. Incidentally, Nirmonn was remade in Hindi as Taqdeer and was also dubbed in

H.Britton, a talented Konkani Tiatrist, hailing from Brittona, Bardez, Goa.. Shri H.Britton, started his professional singing career, in Mumbai, somewhere around 1960, and shot into fame around 1970. Shri H, Britton had a unique style of singing and a very pleasant voice. His thousands of fans liked to see him dress as a girl and sing songs portraying a modern girl. This H.Britton did to perfection. Whenever, H.Britton sang more than one song in a tiatr, one of the songs would inevitably be H. Britton dressed as a girl. The song was bound to have an encore from the audiences. The lyrics of his compositions and the way H. Britton carried himself, always titillated the audiences. Among the many songs composed and sung by H,Britton, some have become immortal. Among the immortalized ones are, Bandra Festak, Marialena, Kazarachya Mattvan, etc.. Shri H.Britton also wrote, directed and produced several Konkani Tiatros which ran to packed-houses, wherever staged. As a Tiatrist, H.Britton traveled to many parts of the world, including U.K and the Middle East. Shri. H. Britton's entire family is into Konkani Tiatrs. They may not be into it professionally, but as Tiatrists, yes they are. Shri. H. Britton wrote and read Konkani only in the Roman Script and he always believed that the real future of Konkani lies, in it being promoted in the Roman script. In the sudden death of Shri H.Britton, the Romi Lipi Action Front has lost a friend, an active supporter. We pray for his soul and may God grant sufficient courage to his family to bear the loss. [Goanet] Goan Konkani film - Poltodcho Munis - captivates Toronto Film Festival audience
GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994) Goan Konkani film - Poltodcho Munis- captivates Toronto Film Festival audience = = = = Man beyond Bridge - Konkani film - Poltodcho Munis A Film Review by Silviano Barbosa Toronto Based on Konkani Poet/Novelist Mahableshwar Sail's story and under the magic touch of young Director Laxmikant Shetgaunkar, the Konkani film Poltodcho Munis can easily be classified as Goa's best Konkani movie ever to captivate the world film audience. This movie has everything in it: best direction, a touching unconventional story, natural acting, attractive scenes, simple yet effective dialogues, down-to-earth characters, rural jungle terrain with a river running through it, and a typical Goan native population to bring out the volatile soul of the land in front of the appreciative world audience. The music is enlivening, and every moment of the film feels precious and satisfying to the soul and you wish and hope the movie never ends. The emotion is boundless and you empathize with the main characters throughout the film. Who is to decide what is righteous or not, but you can believe and love the dazzling treatment the director paints the film with. The chirping of the birds, the quaint sounds of the wild, the smooth running of the fresh pure water in the river, the dark mountains, and the flora and fauna of this beautiful Goan terrain that has hypnotized the poets and sadhus of this world for ages, embellish the environs that forms the backdrop to this magnificent film. The film ends sadly with Vinayak cutting off the rope of the bridge as he cuts off his life from the other side - POLTODDI. The Man Beyond the Bridge is directed by Laxmikant Shetgaonkar (also screenplay). The cast includes Chittaranjan Giri, Veena Jamkar, Prashanti Talpankar and Vasant Josalkar. The music is by Debasish Bhattacharjee/ Ved Nair, sound by Rajendra Hegde, cinematography by Arup Mandal and edited by Sankalp Meshram. The affable portrayal of Vinayak by Chittaranjan Giri is commendable. Veena Jamkar as his live-in companion/ mentally challenged woman hardly speaks, except to say Naka.., but acts superbly. So do the fine charismatic characters of SarPunch, adviser/midwife (voijinn) Prashanti Talponnkar, Bhott and Possorkar, who give this film its finishing touches. Director Shetgaonkar has tackled various aspects of life in this film: loneliness, yearning for love and companionship, serenity of nature, conservation, religious passion and fervour, politics, community celebrations, social mores and traditions and most of all he has used appropriate spoken Konkani language to give a legitimate touch to this film's locale. With films like Poltodcho Munis and directors like Laxmikant Shetgaunkar, India, if not Goa, can be proud of its own *Slum Dog* achievements in the world of films. You have to see this marvellous film for its mercurial soul and most of all for its MUNISPONN . Reviewed by Silviano C. [Goanet] Noel, we will miss you
GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994) -- Noel, we will miss you Goa FA Secretary Savio Messias pays a touching tribute to his close friend Noel da Lima Leitao. Tribute to Noel da Lima Leitao On Sunday, when a friend called up to inform me about Noel's death in Kolkata, it took me quite some time before I could really believe his words. I met him only the other day in Goa and found him as energetic as he was when he first decided to get involved in football in 1991. He showed absolutely no sign of any illness and sounded more concerned about the general health of Indian football. Today, as I sit down to write on Noel, my memory goes back to 1991 when I dragged him into football administration. Vasco Sports Club were in total doldrums during that period and the club management desperately wanted some young blood in the administration to revive the institution. That was the time when I approached him with a request to join the club. Initially, Noel was reluctant as he had never been associated with football before. Why me? he asked, but after little persuasion, he agreed to be associated with Vasco Sports Club. In a short time, he proved to be an asset for the club. Those who were closely associated with Vasco Sports Club during that time are aware of the important role Noel played in reviving the fortunes of the club. Over the next few years, Vasco once again became a force to reckon with in Indian football. Noel led from the front as Vasco became one of the first Goan clubs to recruit foreign players and even appoint a foreign coach. To the present generation, Noel was mostly known as a television commentator. But to me, he was a multi-faceted personality who was able to display his silken skills in administration also. Having tasted success at the club level, Noel rose to be the Vice-President of the Goa Football Association (GFA) in 1993-95 and then the Treasurer from 1995-99. Given his ability and instant success as an administrator, he would have easily continued in important positions in the GFA till date but Noel was not one of those who always wanted to cling to power. After two terms, he simply stepped down from the GFA. Even in the GFA, Noel was able to bring in a lot of changes. He brought sponsors for the association and played a crucial role in developing the Duler Stadium. In between, he edited a highly informative book on Goan football (The Grass is Green in Goa) during the 40th anniversary of the GFA. Noel's untimely death, I personally feel, is a big blow to Indian football. A man of great business acumen, Noel was one of those rare football administrators in India who was vastly educated, knowledgeable and well acquainted with the game's global development both at the administrative and the technical level. Even though Noel distanced himself from the GFA administration, he retained huge popularity among the members. Till the last day, he was a member of the Jury of Appeal of the GFA. Last July, he was re-elected to the same post with a thumping majority. A few hours before Noel breathed his last in his hotel room in Kolkata, his deep and sonorous voice was heard on television during the IFA Shield final. Pity he will not talk to me again in his familiar and friendly voice when he returns to Goa on Monday. News Welcome to the new IndianFootball.Com! Many all over the globe consider 13 to be unlucky. But for Domnic Colaco, Consultant and Production Manager of Talentz Centre LLC, Muscat, a company which deals in sound systems and stage lights and effects, it was just the opposite. {The Man and The Machine]. On board Fr. Peter’s Opera “When I was 13, I had my first big break. I was part of Rev. Fr. Peter Cardozo’s acclaimed opera, Padr Agnel, Onod Gõycho. I even sang solo in the audio album. I think there were no recording facilities here in Goa at that time and so the entire group traveled to Mumbai in a specially-chartered Paulo bus. The album was recorded at Western Outdoor Studios at Flora Fountain,” said Domnic, speaking about the good tidings age-13 brought his way. Being a boarder of Fr.Agnel Niketan, Pilar at that time, had its own advantages. Pilar Music School was nearby and this lad from Quepem was soon learning drums and guitar from his India-fame gurus, Assumption and Domnic. After Pilar and while in college, Domnic was part of the local bands, Ivorians (1984) and Crusaders (1987), doing the vocals and playing the lead guitar and at other times the rhythm as well. Two local bands and five years later, thanks to Mr.Edwin Fernandes, the famous lead guitarist from Per Seraulim, Domnic landed in Delhi playing for Anamika Sood The Temptations, first at Ashoka Hotel and then at Le Meridien on Janpath Road. “Anamika Sood was Delhi’s great pop singer. She was equally at ease with English, Hindi and Punjabi songs,” Domnic recalled of his heady days in the country’s capital. From Delhi to Muscat But in May 1992, Domnic left the Indian shores and found himself in Muscat working for Photocentre, a company similar to Talentz, which handled corporate events, concerts and fashion shows. “It was Valerio Jorge, then Audio Engineer with Photocentre, who took me to Oman. I am grateful to him.” When asked if the up-on-stage to behind-the-scenes job was a difficult transition, he confided, “Music was, and still is, my passion. But there are other things one has to think of. Like financial stability and your family.” “Since 2002, I am with Talentz. But in 2006, I had the privilege of briefly working as Asst. Audio Visual Manager at Abu Dhabi Emirates Palace. Not many, I think, get an opportunity to be there,” he told me with a certain pride. The James Blunt show Talentz Centre LLC is a big name in the Sultanate of Oman. In February this year, it was Talentz who provided the sound, lighting and trussing system for the James Blunt Live show in Muscat. “Held at Muscat Intercontinental Hotel Lawns, the concert was attended by over 4000 fans and was an instant hit. The Dynacord-cobra4 line array system was a perfect match and yes…James Blunt did sing, You Are Beautiful!” he added. {With support team of James Blunt show, extreme right, front row} [James Blunt show poster] Talentz, incidentally, have recently bagged the contract for ‘sound installation’ of Sohar Church in Muscat. “Earlier, our company did the complete sound arrangements for Protestant Church of Oman (PCO) in Ruwi as well as Ghala. We used ‘centre cluster system from electro-voice-speakers’ for PCO, built to accommodate over 300 parishioners,” Domnic elaborated about his company’s connect with churches. {PCO Oman} And while on the subject of churches, I must disclose that when I caught up with Domnic Colaco at his residence near the Kepem Garden on a rainy day when his ‘holiday’ was almost coming to an end, I came upon an unexpected guest at his dining table: Ivor Gomes, the young architect who has designed a new plan for Quepem Church, extending it while at the same time ‘saving’ the old heritage structure. (See Features, GT dated 04.07.2009) ‘Sound’ Footings for Quepem Church Both Domnic and Ivor were animatedly going through the ‘sound arrangements’ of the new plan. “This is an amazing design. Once built, it will become an example for others to follow. Ivor deserves full marks,” Domnic exclaimed as Ivor guided him through the

Vedi Remembering the martyrs of Kuwait - H.S. Vedi / The Times Every year we remember with pain and grief the Second of August, the day the tyrant of Baghdad caused panic and wrought destruction in this peaceful country. The martyrs who laid down their lives during the painful occupation have earned for themselves a place in the hearts of citizens and will be fondly remembered on every Aug 2. It was on this day that Iraqi forces poured across the border into Kuwait and took control of Kuwait City. As we remember our martyrs of Kuwait who fell prey to the invading Iraqi army on August 2, some 19 years ago, we see how Saddam Hussain scuttled the doors of diplomacy in his arrogance of power. I remember that horrific day when Iraqi army setting aside all norms of civilisation invaded this peaceful country, killing anyone who came on their way. They had one agenda to destroy Kuwait and despite world diplomacy, which unfolded to make Saddam see reason, they all failed. But with the blessings of the Royal family who offered full resistance while in exile Kuwait was liberated On this day, I would offer my heartfelt condolence to the Royal family, family of the martyr and to all those who with their heroic resistance stood up against Saddam forces. We also pray for the long life and good health of the Royal family so they continue to guide not only the Kuwaiti but also to the expat population who live under their shelter and umbrella. Saddam has met his nemeses but it is a lesson for a civilized world not to sunk in power and follows the law of the jungle. There is a message all nations must take on August 2. He strongly felt that the Goa Legislative Assembly, in an unnecessary haste,to expedite the Official Language Act of Goa, had done a grave injustice to a very big section of the Goan Society , by ignoring the aspirations of the Roman Script readers and writers of Konkani, in Goa , Mumbai and Overseas. Whenever Dr, Olivinho Gomes spoke on the subject of the Roman Script, he spoke with self-conviction supported by facts and figures.Dr Olivinho was equally at ease with the Devanagari Script as well as the Roman Script and has written books in both the Scripts,in addition to the English language. The Romi Lipi Action Front has lost an active Konkani worker and a friend in the death of Dr. Olivinho. We pray to the Almighty to grant eternal rest to the soul of Dr. Olivinho and strenght to his wife and family to put up with this great personal loss. Review of Fausto V. Da Costa's award-winning Konknni play, Futt (the crack), in audio CD and book-form. By: Walter Menezes A week ago, I came across a collector's item(s): the audio CD and the book in Romi script of Fausto V. Da Costa's award-winning Konknni play, Futt (the crack). The play immediately took me down memory lane. Some twenty-five summers ago, when one had to 'book' a Bajaj scooter and then wait for ages for your turn to come, the public transport was the best way to travel, especially the mini-buses, famous then as they are now, for the music that they played to make the journey comfortable. Futt, I still remember, was quite a hit those days and I must admit that I must have heard the play a number of times as I commuted to work from Kepem to Sanguem, a 15 km stretch with a long break at Curchorem, the mini-bus staying put till another one literally pushed it from behind! The audio CD together with the book makes an excellent combination. A one-act play in the beginning, Futt was later developed into a full-fledged tiatr and staged for the first time at Patkar Hall in Mumbai in aid of Novem Goem, the Konknni daily in Romi script. Besides Mumbai, this tiatr was also staged in Goa and Pune and by the time Futt was nearing the 'fifty-shows' milestone, Faust-bab decided to release the audio cassette of the same. Incidentally, Futt received the 'Man of the Year Award' in 1983, instituted by Murli Deora, then President of BRCC(I). Not many would know that Fausto V. Da Costa, the editor of Gulab, Goa's popular Konknni monthly magazine in Romi script and The Goan Review, a bi-monthly Konknni-English family magazine, was once a professional tiatr 'prompter'. Those were the days when the 'prompter' was much sought-after, coming as he did to the 'rescue' of many a singer and actor on stage. This experience, as also that of acting in a few dramas, held him in good stead. Faust-bab sure knows how to weave a story and keep the listener / reader glued to his seat. Futt is the story of Hasten who leaves behind the wealth and riches of his father and marries Brenda, daughter of a carpenter and love of his heart. Ten years later when Hasten meets with an accident and is bed-ridden and Brenda goes to work to keep the fires burning, there is another fire which engulfs Hasten: he begins to doubt his wife! The story takes another twist when Lovina, Hasten's secretary, ensnares him. Marriage is on the rocks and there comes that moment when Hasten must now decide. Will he divorce his wife for Lovina or will love emerge victorious once again, through the rough and tumble of life? For answers, you will have to either listen to the CD or read the book in tiatr-form. The dialogues have been carefully scripted. Sample this one when Hasten tells Brenda, Mhojea papache polasint diamanti asat tachea von ek vorti diamant hea tumchea gorib ghorant asa ani dekhununch hanv sogllem soddun hanga ailam. (There is this diamond in your humble home which is more precious than all the diamonds in my father's palace and that is why I have left everything to come here.) The cast of Wilson Mazarello (Hasten), Sharon Mazarello (Lovina) and others like Xavier Agapito, Bab Peter and Fausto Da Costa have put up a superb performance. But it is Deodita Da Costa as Brenda who really makes a difference. Her voice and the intensity with which she sings some of the cantos (story-related songs between acts), set to music by Babush, makes your heart skip a beat! Not to be missed is Zatam Fugar and Noxibak Roddtam. We have not seen many tiatrists in recent times putting their scripts in book-form but with the establishment of Tiatr Akademi and a well-known tiatrist like the former speaker of Goa Assembly, Tomazinho Cardozo heading the institution, one hopes that others will soon follow Faust-bab's footsteps. And to Fausto V. Da Costa, all I can say is this: On(c)e more! On(c)e more!! The book: FUTT Author and Publisher: Fausto V. [Goanet] 100-year-old nun Sister Lenka of Kolkata hailed as unsung Mother Teresa
GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994) INDIA 100-year-old nun hailed as unsung Mother Teresa By Anne Nigli KOLKATA, India (UCAN) -- A Hungarian nun, who has just turned 100, has been hailed as an unsung Mother Teresa for her decades of work helping poor women gain the skills to earn a living. Centenarian Sister Lenke Franciscan Sister Etelka Marton, popularly known as Sister Lenke, has lived in Kolkata since 1968 where she has taught thousands of women to sew and embroider, giving them skills that helped them feed their families. Unlike Mother Teresa, or Blessed Teresa of Kolkata, Sister Lenke was unknown to the media, retired Archbishop Henry D'Souza of Calcutta told UCA News before celebrating a Mass to mark her 100th birthday on June 27. While Blessed Teresa's work was highly visible, Sister Lenke spent most of her time in her workroom, training poor women sent by priests from far-flung mission stations. The frail nun, with a wide grin and sparkle in her eye, still commands respect and love from her companions and the women she taught, say those who know her. Some 250 women who she has helped over the years visited her on her birthday bringing their children and grandchildren. Sister Lenke was active until Jan. 1 when she broke her right arm in a fall, her superior, Sister Celine Xavier, said. While her arm has healed, Sister Lenke, who is nearly blind, has been bedridden since the accident. Sister Xavier said that during her decades of service, the centenarian nun has worked as gardener, nurse, matron to orphans, sacristan and catechism teacher. Her main mission, however, was to head the embroidery section that had in its early years trained over 500 poor village women. She stopped teaching in 1994 but continued to pray, listen to spiritual readings, and welcome innumerable visitors, said Sister Xavier. Sister Lenke was born in 1909 in Budapest. According to Sister Celine, the senior nun vividly recalls growing up in the turmoil that followed the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire after World War I. While her father was away at war, her mother worked as a dressmaker to provide for her four children, of which Sister Lenke was the eldest. Only the nun's younger sister is still living today, in Hungary. One of her brothers died a few weeks after his birth and the other died during the World War II. Sister Lenke joined the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary in 1930 and reached Jabalpur in central India in 1934. She came to Kolkata in 1968 but remains a Hungarian citizen. http://www.ucanews.com/2009/07/16/100-year-old-nun-hailed-as-unsung-mother-teresa/ http://www.goa-world.com www.colaco.net http://www.flickr.com/photos/venantius/ www.goa-world.com/goa/ music/ - The Online Music Station for KONKANI http://www.konkanisongbook.com/ THANKS TO ALL FOR YOUR PRAYERS http://www.jrsbible.info/bible.htm Promoting Tiatr Tiatrists since 1994 http://tiatracademy.blogspot.com/ Gulf-Goans e-Newsletter http://www.yahoogroups.com/group/gulf-goans EXPRESSIONS - THE FLOWER SHOP http://www.goa-world.com/expressions/ Tuji kopi sugur korunk visronaka http://tiatracademy.blogspot.com/2009/07/greatest-konkani-song-hits-214-page.html http://tiatracademy.blogspot.com/2009/07/greatest-konkani-song-hits-214-page.html
[Goanet] ABCD of Football - Lector Mascarenhas (GW)
GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994) ABCD of Football Sunday, 19. July 2009 - Lector Mascarenhas (GW) The first four alphabets ABCD are crucial in the career of a professional coach today to get to the highest level. In the seventies the first four alphabets, ABCD were made very popular by the famous four of Vasco Sports Club: Andrew, Bernard, Catao and Domnic. Football aficionados in Goa still remember them very fondly even today for their contribution to Goan football. Now, almost three decades later, the same alphabets ABCD are once again very much in the news, albeit for a different reason. In fact, the alphabet 'A' jeopardised the planning and preparation of I-League clubs finding themselves on the wrong side of AFC's criteria and guidelines for recruitment of I-League club coaches. ABC are the three Licence courses offered by the AFC as part of their coach education and as per the latest dictate, all I-League clubs are required to have 'A' Licensed coaches in their squads. Some of the big names drawn in the hit list were former internationals and present coaches Subhas Bhowmick, Sukhvinder Singh, Shabbir Ali. These former players have gained vast experience both as players and coaches of top Indian clubs for several years. What's important, certificate or experience? These are some of the germane questions to be answered by the authorities involved. The out going general secretary Alberto Colaco very forthrightly stated that the standing of these former players cannot be equated with a mere licence and that the AIFF has taken up the matter with the AFC. I am glad this response is on expected lines and deserves to be backed up by all. Lets hope AFC considers this matter sympathetically and enough time and relaxation will be given to these senior coaches to meet the criteria. The 'D' License course is the brain child of the Goa Football Association and our own 'A' Licensed Goan coaches very ably lead by Armando Colaco. A few days back, there was a 'D' License course organised by the GFA at Tilak Maidan in Vasco. As per reports, thirty four coaches have cleared the course successfully and it was heartening to see, three of my former national/international colleagues from Salgaocar Sports Club viz Oscar Rebello, Jose D'Souza and Anton Joao Fernandes, among the successful candidates. They have served the club and the state with distinction. Unlike the AFC courses, there is no age restriction in the 'D' License course which made it possible for these former star players to attend. I would like to pose the same question again - Do only degrees or certificates matter? My reaction to this would be the same as expressed by the AIFF General Secretary. Their standing cannot be equated by acquiring mere certificates. However, these courses DCBA in the ascending order are very important to learn the latest trends/methods and Principles of coaching. They are: Organisation, Start, Observation, Identification of a Problem, Stopping, Rehearsing and Re-Starting. And now having learnt the basics of coaching, I am sure these former players will be an asset for youth development training in Goa. During their playing days these players were known for exhibiting certain technique/skills which I would like to recollect with nostalgia - Oscar Rebello - a stopper-back, had great sense of timing in tackling, Jose D'Souza - a Midfielder - had the ability to use both feet for timely shifting the flanks of play and Anton Joao Fernandes - a Forward - could beat any defender in one-on-one situation by flicking a dead ball over a defender. I believe when it comes to training youngsters, a good demonstration of a technique/skill is a job half done. I happen to be the secretary of Goa Veterans Football Club and bringing back veteran players back into the game for training youngsters is one of our objectives. I am aware that not all good players necessarily make good coaches but you never know, till you try. Armando Colaco, the AFC instructor and the man heading the Technical Committee of GFA, is also very enthusiastic to conduct this 'D' Licence course all over Goa. GFA has done well by starting the Fun stage (6 to 10 year olds) at several centres in Goa and I am sure all these centres will also get to hold the 'D' Licence course so that PE teachers more importantly around these centres and former players get the opportunity to undertake this course in the locality. I request the GFA to also recognise, these former players who have donned Senior National/International colours and passed the 'D' License course, as qualified coaches equivalent to the 'C License course' so that they can formally appear as licensed coaches in all GFA organised football events. They have the experience which one cannot gain in seven, twenty or one month. I also hope, the AFC will also relax the age limit for all former State (seniors)/International players to help them take

[Goanet] Songs of the Survivors - by Yvonne Vaz Ezdani
GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994) Songs of the Survivors http://broadwaybooksgoa.com NEW BOOK TELLS OF THE UNTOLD STORY OF GOANS IN BURMA Goan overseas migration has been studied and written on fairly extensively, yet some aspects of it still await to be adequately understood, suggests a new book on the subject. The 289-page just-published book looks at migration by Goans to an unusual part of the planet -- in Burma. It focuses on a dramatic point in history, the World War II Japanese invasion of the land now known as Myanmar, and the tumultuous impact this had on lives of the Goans settled there. 'Songs of the Survivors' is edited by ex-teacher Yvonne Vaz Ezdani, who herself lived in Burma till the early 1980s, along with a large extended family from Saligao that has largely since resettled here. Ezdani keeps busy with counselling students, and her two daughters Shannon and Rachel are settled in Australia. Writes editor Ezdani, In an instant (during the War in 1942), the Goans' comfortable and serene lives were shattered and they were plunged into chaos and fear. Many trekked back to India, through jungles and mountains and streams, and the stories of this generation, slowly fading away with age and memory, is recorded in this book. But some Goans even decided to stay on during Japanese occupation. When one reads their stories, the perils of migration and its impact become all that more stark, a reality we often forget here. It is priced Rs 295 and its sole distributor is the 18th June Road (Panjim)-based Broadway. This book, edited by Vaz-Ezdani, is collaboratively written by two dozen contributors (besides herself). Some 20 contributors were born and grew up in British-ruled Burma. She writes: This book may be about Goans in Burma, but it also seeks to record tales of determination and survival that are relevant to the human spirit everywhere. The Japanese occupation years contrast drastically with the enviable lifestyle lived by Goan expats in the enchanting country of wide rivers, green, rain-washed paddy fields, pagodas... and a thousand hills. What makes this text an unusual one is that it has brought together the small-but-connected community of 'Burma Goans', and could also help link up more who were connected to that distant part of East Asia because of migration. In pre-release comments, author Dr Maria Aurora Couto said these memoirs illuminate the pioneering spirit, humanity, courage and faith that have sustained Goa through the ages. Sanskrit scholar and specialist in Indian drama Dr Pramod Kale called this, A piece of oral history that documents poignantly the travails and suffering imposed on the ordinary people by wars. It reminds one of Brecht's Saga of Mother Courage and Her Children. To be released on December 29, 2007 by NRI Commissioner Eduardo Faleiro at 4.30 pm at the Xavier Centre of Historical Research, Alto Porvorim, the book is published by Goa 1556, a venture of journalist Frederick Noronha. GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994) 20th August, marks the inclusion of Konkani in the 8th schedule of the Indian constitution by both Houses of Parliament in 1992. Goans celebrate this occasion by holding an event in commemoration of their own language - Konkani. What better way would Dubai Goankars want to celebrate the same.. Meet more Goans friends of Goans! Goans across the globe (India, Daman, United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Portugal, Spain, Kenya, Tanzania ) are gearing up to celebrate World Goa Day, with theme “Lets work TOGETHER to put UNITY back into our Goan community” with the same theme in mind and hence my decision to celebrate the same in Dubai was born, says the organizer of the event Cynthia Fernandes. Mr. Rene Barreto, conveyor of the event, says, on Goa day this year, thousands of Goans will once again remind themselves of the need to work to preserve our culture, music, history, language, cuisine, and art for our children, the non-Goan community, and for posterity. The theme of Giving back to Goa is a good way to inspire our Goan community to do more for Goa and Goans worldwide, writes the London-based Mr. Barreto. Let Goa day be a beacon of light and inspiration throughout the year and for the rest of our lives. Let us make this our motto: Proud to be a Goan and live up to that motto. Here's the new version of its theme-song Proud to be a Goan, with the refrain in Konkani as well, as you'll see from the lyrics produced below. The new version was produced at the request of Rene Barreto, for reasons he felt best. Click on the Link above and you'll get the vocal version to listen to and learn the song, now sung at World Goa Day celebrations on 7th August 2009. [Goanet] E Sreedharan resigns as Delhi Metro chief - five people were killed
GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994) E Sreedharan resigns as Delhi Metro chief NDTV Correspondent, Sunday July 12, 2009, New Delhi google_protectAndRun(render_ads.js::google_render_ad, google_handleError, google_render_ad); E Sreedharan has resigned as the chief of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation after five people were killed when an under-construction flyover of the Delhi Metro collapsed in south Delhi early Sunday morning. Thirteen people were injured and rushed to the AIIMS trauma centre. I take full moral responsibility for the accident. As head of the organisation, I have to take the responsibility, said Sreedharan, adding that this is the worst accident in the history of Delhi Metro. He also said that the accident has caused a damage of Rs six crore. Sreedharan submitted his resignation to Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit after visiting the site of the accident. However, sources in the CM office have said that the resignation won't be accepted in a hurry. The DMRC has set up a five-member committee to probe into the mishap. Meanwhile, the Delhi Chief Minister visited AIIMS to meet the injured. She has announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the families of those who died, Rs 2 lakh for those with serious injuries and Rs 50,000 for those with other injuries. About 30 workers were at the site when the mishap occurred. One of the pillars broke, leading to the collapse of the concrete slab. A water pipeline also burst as the heavy slab fell on it. Police, fire brigade and ambulance are at the spot and rescue operation is being carried out. In a similar incident in October 2008, two people died and 16 were injured when a portion of the an under-construction bridge collapsed and fell on a bus on east Delhi's busy Vikas Marg. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation blamed the contractor Afcons Infrastructure for the accident but the contractor wasn't changed as DMRC said that would mean major delays. The company said it had put many more safety measures in place after this incident. Some of other major metro-related accidents in the past: On July 18, 2008: A faulty crane at a metro construction site dropped a four-ton iron beam on a passing car and injured two people. August 28, 2007: A crane driver died after a concrete block fell on him. http://www.ndtv.com/news/india/3_killed_7_injured_in_delhi_metro_bridge_collapse.php http://www.goa-world.com www.colaco.net http://www.flickr.com/photos/venantius/ www.goa-world.com/goa/ music/ - The Online Music Station for KONKANI http://www.konkanisongbook.com/ THANKS TO ALL FOR YOUR PRAYERS http://www.jrsbible.info/bible.htm Promoting Tiatr Tiatrists since 1994 http://tiatracademy.blogspot.com/ Gulf-Goans e-Newsletter http://www.yahoogroups.com/group/gulf-goans EXPRESSIONS - THE FLOWER SHOP http://www.goa-world.com/expressions/ My doctor told me to stop having intimate dinners for four. [Goanet] QUEPEM CHURCH - Part Two (By Walter Menezes)
GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994) QUEPEM CHURCH - Part Two (By Walter Menezes) QUEPEM CHURCH By: Walter Menezes PART TWO: A new plan for Quepem Church: HOW THE OLD CAN ‘C0-EXIST’ WITH THE NEW Yesterday we read about the ‘findings’ of the Diocesan Commission for Sacred Art and Heritage (DCSAH) regarding Quepem Church, details of which were made public by the Parish Priest, Fr. Mario Vaz in the second half of May, 2009. While heritage activists all over Goa may have heaved a sigh of relief, parishioners of the church were not upbeat although a majority of them had ‘voted’ that the old church should be saved and extensions made in an ‘exercise’ conducted by the parish priest in the last week of April 2008. The suggestion of the Commission that the existing choir-loft be repaired to accommodate another 150 parishioners did not strike the right chord in the minds of the faithful. This writer who spoke to a cross-section of parishioners found this oft-repeated question being asked, ‘Is the choir-loft the only solution to increase the capacity of the church?’ The young architect Parishioners of Quepem Church need not lose hope. Even before DCSAH could inspect the church in the month of November 2008, Ivor Gomes, a young architect from Quepem, was already spending hours surfing the net and leafing through churches-related journals. A Book of World Architecture showcasing the glorified structures of ancient, classical, medieval and other periods was his constant companion. Struck by the heritage bug, Ivor is all praise for the magnificent churches of Goa that have withstood the test of time. When asked what was so ‘lasting’ about them, he summed it up in a few words, ‘Lime theory lasts longer than concrete theory!’ Working on a 1:500 scale survey plan sourced from the survey department, Ivor began designing a plan which would not only save the ‘heritage structure’ but at the same time increase the capacity of the church by about 500. After the drawings were complete, he worked tirelessly to prepare the 3D Model of the church using AUTO CAD, so that the common man could see how the church would look from all angles. Ivor’s result is a stunning combination of how the old can co-exist with the new! In the process, the young architect has not only been able to increase the capacity of the church to meet the needs of a large gathering on a Sunday service, he has also incorporated two new bell-towers and additional façades to enhance the aesthetic look of the church. The ‘feel of a cathedral’ Quepem Church was originally a chapel dedicated to Holy Cross and catered to the religious needs of the hamlet founded by ‘Deão’. The altar dedicated to Holy Cross still occupies a place of pride inside. The chapel was subsequently ‘converted’ into a church, but unlike most churches in Goa, the ‘transept’ was missing. ‘The survey plan gave me enough ‘space’ to plan a ‘transept’ which in no way harmed the nave of the church. This way the church will retain its heritage part while making the extension possible,’ explained Ivor. Only the copelmar (sanctuary) housing the main wooden altar dedicated to Our Lady of Piety will have to be demolished. ‘This altar will then move further by about 12 meters from the imposing ‘central arch’ into an opening in the wall of the transept,’ he added. Quepem Church, like the other churches in Goa, will then acquire the shape of a cross to symbolize the crucifix. By introducing two bell-towers on either arm of the transept and the additional façades, the young architect has succeeded in giving the church the ‘feel of a cathedral’. ‘But they are there with a purpose. The way to the balconies on either side of the transept will be through these bell-towers. And the new façades will compliment the existing one!’ Ivor elaborated. With the stairs making access to the roof easy, these bell-towers would also make maintenance and other functions effortless. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament That is not all. He plans to convert the existing sacristy into a sacred place for the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. ‘The setting is perfect. There is an old altar against a wall which has a large antique painting showing Jesus on the cross and (I think) St. John and Mother Mary on either side. This wall-painting, and others in the sacristy, will have to be restored.’ Ivor said but is quick to add, ‘Let this plan be only the starting point, some kind of a diving-board to take the plunge.’ He knows that there will be changes and modifications. The views of the parishioners and those of the DCSAH will have to be taken into account. But like so many parishioners, Ivor Gomes is of the firm opinion that the ‘process’ which began last year should come to its logical conclusion and not be indefinitely ‘shelved’. It is now time for the Diocesan Commission for Sacred Art and Heritage to ‘rise’ to the occasion and show the world that the ‘old

[Goanet] G.O.A Maroons champions of KIFF League - J .P. D’Mello Memorial Rolling Trophy for season 2008 -2009
GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994) J.P. D'mello Trophy (KIFF League) - 2008-09 Season G.O.A Maroons champions of KIFF League - J.P. D’Mello Memorial Rolling Trophy for season 2008-2009 G.O.A Maroons won the KIFF League title for season 2008-2009 for the J.P. D’Mello Memorial Rolling Trophy in KIFF Silver Jubilee anniversary by defeating DHL Football Club in the final held on 19th June 2009 at the Salmiya Baladiya stadium, Kuwait. The closing ceremony started with the march-past of all 18 Affiliates along with their escorts carrying respective club banners and followed by the KIFF President B.M. Viegas and the Guest of Honor Agustino Themudo. The players of both the finalists were introduced to all the Club Presidents and the Guest of Honour followed by the playing of Indian National anthem. DHL Football Club were touted as favorites to win the title as they had stormed into the finals with a clean sheet from the qualifying round robin stage and also had the added advantage of beating GOA Maroons in the same group. But GOA Maroons with all their experience and will power were not to be daunted having won the league previously 2 times, since the inception of the KIFF league. The game started with DHL dominating the early stages of the first half, but could not get a breakthrough with GOA Maroons relying on counter attacks. Slowly and steadily GOA Maroons picked up the tempo and took the game in the rival’s half, but failed to sound the scoreboard. The first half ended goalless with neither team making a breakthrough. The second half started lively with GOA Maroons heating up the proceedings with Kennedy and Stephen being a constant threat to DHL defense and in one such move Kennedy rocked the DHL crossbar with a rasping volley. DHL did counter attack, but their plan failed as most of the attacks were routed towards their star striker Andre who was totally off color. The normal time ended with neither team finding the back of the net. The match went in to extra time without any score in the regulation period and both the teams were content to see the extra period off comfortably to proceed towards the dreaded tie-breaker. The tie-breaker too failed to break the deadlock and GOA Maroons came out victorious in the sudden death with their shot stopper Anthony saving DHL Vitorin's spot kick, to the much excitement and joy of GOA Maroons fans, supporters, players and officials. The final score-line read 5-4 in favour of GOA Maroons to lift the prestigious KIFF league trophy. The game was played in a very sporting manner by both the teams and the credit goes to All India Football Federation (AIFF) and FIFA affiliated referee Franky Fernandes for keeping the things quiet on the field of play. The presentation ceremony started with the KIFF President B.M. Viegas welcoming the Guest of Honour, Agustinho Themudo, a well Konkani stage artiste, Club Presidents and other dignitaries. The President thanked all the sponsors and the general public for making the 25 years celebration a memorable one. He also requested all those who can to locate the playing field for the next season and help the Federation to keep the game alive. Agostinho Themuda complimented the KIFF Managing Committee and the Federation for the effort in organising the football game in this part of the world and in doing so giving the expatriate community leisure time enjoyment. Mementos were presented to all the 18 Affiliates by the KIFF President for keeping the game alive for the last 25 years. Mementos were also presented to GOA Maroons, YRC Rising Stars, Santos Football Club and United Goans' Center for completing 25 years in KIFF. Special mementos were presented to Franky Fernandes and AIFF for the goodwill gesture towards KIFF. The KIFF Managing Committee members were presented with plaques for their hard work and dedication in helping the federation to continue with the game. The following prizes were awarded: KIFF League Champions Trophy: GOA Maroons presented by KIFF President and Guest of Honor. KIFF League Runners-up Trophy: DHL Football Club given away by KIFF Vice-President Xavier Furtado. Winners individual prizes handed over by KIFF Treasurer Shyam Kumar. Runners-up individual prizes given away by KIFF Asst. Sports Secretary P.A. Tony. Fair Play Trophy: GOA Maroons given away by KIFF Gen. Secretary Fidelis Fernandes. KIFF League Highest Scorer: Josse of KGA presented by KIFF Sports Secretary Derrick Gomindes. Best Player of the finals Vitorin of DHL presented by KIFF P.R.O Jack Fernandes. Special gift was given to KIFF Sports Secretary Derrick Gomindes by Tony Dias for his untiring efforts on the field. The federation also issued merit certificates to all the registered
[Goanet] QUEPEM CHURCH - Part One (By Walter Menezes)
www.goa-world.com GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994) QUEPEM CHURCH - Part One (By Walter Menezes) QUEPEM CHURCH By: Walter Menezes PART ONE: DIOCESAN COMMISSION FOR SACRED ART VOTES FOR HERITAGE More than 183 X 2 days after the three-instalment article, Quepem Church: 183 not out! Should it be pulled down? appeared on Gomantak Times (see issues dated 8-10 May, 2008), Rev. Fr. Mario Vaz, the Parish Priest of Holy Cross Church, Quepem made public on May 24, 2009, the findings of the Diocesan Commission for Sacred Art and Heritage. A delegation of the Commission headed by Rev. Fr. Nelson Sequeira had visited the church on a fact-finding mission in the middle of November 2008 and had later submitted its report to the parish priest in January 2009. Fr. Sequeira was accompanied by conservation architect Ketan Nachinolkar, engineer Sylvester Souza and architect Jose Noronha. But first, a brief background about the church. The Quepem Church The Holy Cross Church of Quepem was founded in 1825 by the Cathedral Dean Rev. Jose Paulo da Costa Pereira de Almeida. A chapel in the beginning and filial to the church of Paroda, it was made a parish by provision of 5.2.1833. After repairs the church was re-opened for the worship on 6.7.1889. Rev. Almeida or ‘Deão’, as he is respectfully known in Quepem even today was born to Faustino da Costa Pereira de Almeida and Margarida Ignacia da Encarnação Netto in the City of Braga in Portugal. He arrived in Goa in 1779 and in 1787 shifted his residence from Old Goa to Quepem and founded a hamlet. He established, at his own expense, a public market, hospital, other facilities and the Church for the benefit of the inhabitants, as inscribed on the pyramidal structure in the churchyard. The Deão died on the 10th of January 1835 and is buried in the Se Cathedral in front of the altar of Nossa Senhora da Dores. Over a period of time, with the faithful having increased manifold, a move to construct a new church on an adjoining plot was initiated by the then parish priest Rev. Fr. Michael Rebello. The plot in question was however ‘gifted’ by Cabido, trustees of the Deão estate, exclusively for the purpose of constructing a commercial complex. Unlike other churches in Goa, Quepem church has no assets at all and the motive behind the ‘gift’ was to generate the much-needed income for the church. Fr. Rebello’s move, therefore, ran into troubled waters. Pulse of the People Last year, from 22nd April to 3rd May, Fr. Vaz, in a fresh attempt, visited each and every ward of the parish to know the ‘pulse’ of the parishioners. In some kind of a referendum, there were three choices before the parishioners: a) should a new church be built at a new site? b) should the old church be demolished and a new church built in its place? and c) should the old church be saved and extensions made? In the meantime, the GT article was creating ripples in Goa. Fr. Antonio Costa told GT (May 9, 2008): It should be renovated but the original structure, especially the façade, should be kept intact. Heritage activist Percival Noronha was up on his feet. ‘If this church goes down, it will be a big blow to heritage protection in the state,’ he said in another paper (TOI, May 11, 2008). Margao and Two Churches Derek Almeida, GT Editor, in a touching editorial (May 28, 2008), against the backdrop of the commencement of restoration work of Telaulim church, wrote, ‘There is something endearing about the churches that dot this tiny state of ours. The elaborate altars painted in gold, the numerous candles, the cherubs, statues, arched windows and wooden roofs are a marvel. These churches have provided material to several writers and photographers and have been the subject of numerous books.’ He further says, ‘Walk into the Holy Spirit Church in Margao and then take a trip to Grace Church, also in Margao and you will begin to appreciate the huge difference between the two.’ The editorial ends up with a message: ‘…the least we can do is think clearly before we sever our architectural links with the past.’ Report of the Commission And now, for the ‘findings’ of the Diocesan Commission for Sacred Art and Heritage: • The Commission found the Quepem Church of immense ‘architectural value’ and gave the opinion that the same should be preserved. The church, by the way, was built during the Rococo period, famous for ‘the conchoidal forms sometimes changing into leaves and the leaves into flames’ (José Pereira, Professor Emeritus, Fordham University, NY, while participating in a symposium on ‘Amchem Goem’ in 2004.) • The four-tiered altar with a cupola, carved of heavy wood and finished in gold, as also the intricate flooring, should be safeguarded. • Of the other suggestions made by the Commission, one pertains to the reconstruction of the choir-loft. Such an exercise, the Commission felt, would increase the capacity of the

[Goanet] Michael Jackson's mega-farewell
GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994) Michael Jackson's mega-farewell Fans, friends pay tribute to the King of Pop By DANA HARRIS div#relatedBox {margin:5px;} Presented by AEG. Reviewed July 7, 2009. Live from Staples Center; 20,000 seats; free distribution by lottery from a pool of 1.6 million Performers: Ron Boyd, Kobe Bryant, Mariah Carey, Andrae Crouch Choir, Berry Gordy, Jennifer Hudson, Shaheen Jafargholi, Magic Johnson, Martin Luther King III, Bernice A. King, John Mayer, Lionel Richie, Smokey Robinson, Rev. Al Sharpton, Brooke Shields, Pastor Lucious Smith, Usher and Stevie Wonder. There was Elvis, there was John Lennon, there was Princess Diana, and now there’s Michael Jackson, the first celebrity to inspire global paroxysms of grief in the 21st century. Measured by his media coverage as well as his posthumous legal and medical issues, not to mention his mourning fans, it’s possible that Jackson has topped them all. On Tuesday morning, downtown Los Angeles was transformed into a humming mini-economy dedicated to the memory of the entertainer. Amid something of a police state, with helicopters buzzing overhead and packs of officers stationed along Figueroa Avenue, the throngs of ticket holders, makeshift T-shirt vendors and wishful thinkers created an atmosphere that was almost friendly. Jackson spokesman Ken Sunshine had said he hoped the lottery-based ticket distribution for the Staples Center memorial service would be conducted with dignity — a wish that might seem far-fetched for an event conducted in a space that would next host the Ringling Bros. and Barnum Bailey Circus. Certainly the numbers were impressive: 19,500 mourners at Staples and another 5,500 at the Nokia Theater simulcast. Meanwhile, Tuesday saw endless hours of TV and online coverage domestically and around the world. AEG, which organized the memorial, said figures will be available today for global carriers and estimates of viewers. CNN estimated that the memorial yielded the second-highest live vid streaming day in CNN.com’s history, with the site serving up 9.7 million video streams. Hulu reported that Tuesday was its second-highest live vid streaming day after the Obama inauguration in January. Clearly, it takes a global village to mourn a superstar. While the memorial was a spectacle, it also offered no shortage of sorrow, genuine emotion and, yes, dignity. Though predictions about downtown gridlock were ominous, less than 1,000 people showed up around the lockdown perimeter, and things went generally well despite the tight time frame in which this event was assembled. However, the morning wasn’t without its glitches. An LAPD officer outside L.A. Live’s Club Nokia said, We’re a little behind schedule for family considerations, a reference to the family’s morning service at Forest Lawn in Glendale. Inside Staples, Smokey Robinson appeared as the first speaker at 10:10 a.m. After reading statements of sympathy from Diana Ross and Nelson Mandela, Robinson returned to his seat, and the arena fell quiet for 20 long minutes, silent enough to hear the purr of the A/C system. Finally, as the Andrae Crouch Choir filed on stage at 10:33 a.m., the Jackson family walked into the arena. Acting as pallbearers were Michael Jackson’s brothers (each wearing aviator sunglasses and one sparkly glove), wheeling in an enormous gold-plated casket covered in red roses. Given the ornate presentation, it was a moment that could have tipped into the baroque. Instead, the casket served as a valid reminder of what had been lost. The first speaker was Pastor Lucious Smith, who, like those who followed him, came onstage without introduction. His words effectively framed what was to come, describing Jackson as a brother, son, father and friend who would be celebrated in the space where, only days ago, he danced and sang. Punctuating the service throughout was audible sniffling from the audience along with cries of I love you, Michael! and We all love you, Michael! Mariah Carey and Trey Lorenz provided the first performance with the Jackson 5 song I’ll Be There. Queen Latifah introduced her remarks by saying that she was representing all the fans, a remark she underlined with a remembrance of buying the Jackson 5 album Dance Machine and trying to learn to dance the robot with her brother. She also read a poem by Maya Angelou dedicated to Jackson, We Had Him, which began: Now that we know/we know nothing… We had him/He took a pose/on his toes/for all of us. Lionel Richie sang the gospel-tinged Commodores song Jesus Is Love with a choral backing. While his performance was heartfelt, the projected backdrop of anonymous church arches seemed strange in an environment that was otherwise deeply personal. Former Motown head Berry Gordy said Jackson raised the bar and broke the bar. He also spoke of the competitiveness at Motown, perhaps alluding to the internal

[Goanet] CLASS ACT !
GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994) CLASS ACT ! JOHANNESBURG: Brazil defended their Confederations Cup title last night with a crushing come-from-behind 3-2 victory to inflict a cruel loss on tenacious underdogs the United States. The five-time world champions looked out for the count after Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan put the Americans two up at half-time but they bounced back with a Luis Fabiano brace drawing them level with 16 minutes left. It set the scene for an exciting finale and captain Lucio made it a memorable night with a powerful header from an Elano corner with six minutes remaining. The victory sparked wild celebrations on the bench with Brazil now having won a gruelling seven games over the past 20 days - five at the Confederations Cup and two in World Cup qualifying. It was their third Confederations Cup crown following triumphs in 1997 and 2005. Brazil had won 14 of their 15 previous encounters with the US and beaten Bob Bradley's men 3-0 in the group stages. But since that match the US fortunes changed dramatically. After trouncing Egypt 3-0 to sneak into the knockout rounds on goals scored after finishing equal of points and goal difference with Italy, they shocked European champions Spain 2-0 in the semi-finals. But their luck ran out against Brazil. On a cold winter's night, Bradley's giantkillers began in an attacking frame of mind with Fulham's Dempsey making the first attempt on goal with a long distance strike that fizzed wide after just two minutes. Brazil started feeding the ball to Maicon on the right and he lofted crosses into the box that put the US under pressure before Real Madrid's new signing Kaka glanced a header wide. Dunga said before the match he wanted an early goal but it was the US who stunned Brazil after 10 minutes. West Ham's Jonathan Spector fed Dempsey with a defence-splitting through ball and the number eight cleverly put his shot under the diving Julio Cesar. Spain claim third place http://www.gulf-daily-news.com/NewsDetails.aspx?storyid=254312 FIFA CONFEDERATIONS CUP 2009 WINNER - BRAZIL Famous football team Brazil create a record in Confederations Cup history, because they became three time winners of Confederations cup. In 2009 Confederations cup final, Brazil defeated US with the score 3-2 at Johannesburg on 28th April 2009. Brazil was gained this trophy after its victory in 1997 and 2005 and this victory helps Brazil to surpass the record of two Confederations Cup champion titles shared by France and Brazil. In the final of this tournament, US team was ahead at half time with the goals by Clint Dempsey and skipper Landon Donovan. In the second half, Brazil seemed to strong and they give pressure on the U.S. side. With just one minute after the break, Brazil player Luis Fabiano gained the first goal for his team. The second goal also came in 74th minute from the leg of Luis Fabiano. In 84 minutes, centre-back Lucio's header come to a goal and Brazilian's grab the trophy. US goalkeeper Tim Howard produced several good saves in this tournament and US team gained confidence through this tournament. They reached in the final by defeating the world number one ranked team Spain with the score 2-0 in the semi final. This defeat was great shock to the football world. Brazil also has done a great job in this tournament and it was the only team to reach the final with the lowest rank. They reached in the final by defeating South Africa with the score 1-0 in the semi final. Their player Kaka did not gained any goal in this match, but he is the play maker on this match and he was awarded Man of the match. Also their player Luis Fabiano gained Golden shoes award or top scorer award. HISTORY Brazil football team is the national team of Brazil and it is managed by Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). It is the most successful national football team and it has long history in football World Cup. It is the five time World champion and it is the only team to have played in every World Cup. Now it is ranked fifth by FIFA. Brazil's first match was in 1914 against English football club Exeter City. Brazil won this match with the score 2-0. Brazil hosted the 1950 FIFA World Cup and it is the only time Brazil has hosted the World Cup. In the final of this World cup, Brazil and Uruguay were reached. But Brazil lost the match with the score 2-1. In 1958 World Cup, Brazil got Pele as the star player and they won that World cup by defeating the host country Sweden with the score 5-2. By winning this trophy, they became the first nation to win a World Cup title outside of its own continent. They also gained 1962 FIFA World Cup with the help of their star player Garrincha. Brazil won its third World Cup in Mexico in the 1970 FIFA World Cup under the captaincy of Pele. After that Brazil football team has been considered to be the best football team in the world. [Goanet] Kabrastan allergy - by Sayed Iftiyaz
GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994) Kabrastan allergy Goans are seen objecting to kabrastans for Muslims tooth and nail, giving reasons such as no Muslim population in the area, water pollution, air pollution, etc. A kabrastan is a very clean place, so such objections are not justified. In Goa it is mainly the Christian community that is objecting to kabrastans. It is surprising to see that Goan Christians are not following the teachings of Jesus Christ in the true sense. He never taught us to oppose or humiliate other communities, but has shown by his own example that one should love God’s creatures and help them in need. He said, “Love thy Neighbour as You Love thyself” – irrespective of religion, caste or creed. We claim that we Goans love people of all religions and are known for our communal harmony all over the world. Let us show this through our actions instead of just talking about it. Let Christians, Hindus and Muslims join together and help our Muslim brethren to acquire a burial ground without any hindrances. Sayed Iftiyaz, Margoa http://www.oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=23599cid=13 (Letters to the Editor in today's O'Heraldo English newspaper in Goa] Additional inputs as documented by www.goa-world.com team May 10, 2009 Don’t refuse land for Kabrastan in Goa: Fr Cedric Prakash Don’t refuse land for Kabrastan: activist HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, MAY 9 Gujarat-based human rights activist and award winner, Fr Cedric Prakash has said that it is a sin for anyone to refuse Muslims land to bury their dead in Goa. While social thinker, Swami Agnivesh has allayed fears of Goans that the influx of people with burquas and beards would destroy the state, he urged the people not to fear, but celebrate diversity in this age of globalization. They were speaking at a public meeting organised by the Interfaith Dialogue for life; Council for social justice and peace and Human rights Law Network, Goa on Combating Communalism – Affirming Secularism at the Lohia Maidan here on Saturday evening. “There are Catholics in Goa who refuse to give Muslims to bury their dead. This is Sin, this is wrong”, he said adding “Jesus never taught us to discriminate. I can say with conviction and with full heart”. Fr Prakash said those who profess to be disciples of Jesus should stand up for the sisters and brothers, not because they are Muslims, but they are children of God and belonging to a secular country. Referring to the situation in Gujarat post 2002, Fr Prakash said the Gujarat government has enacted a law which requires permission from the Collector to convert to another religion. ‘The Universal Declaration of Human Rights gives me a right to change my religions, and neither Modi nor Advani can change this”, he said and charged the fascist forces for strangulating the freedom of speech guaranteed by the Constitution. Swami Agnivesh underlined the need for Goans to come together and build a Kabrastan with love. “Don’t be apprehensive of people wearing burquas or men sporting beard. Don’t think these people will destroy Goa. We will never allow Goa to be destroyed”, he asserted. “We will take Goa’s strength to build a strong and new India. Globalisation has come to stay. Don’t fear diversity, but celebrate diversity”, he said. Swami Agnivesh has called upon Goans to fight the mining and real estate mafia, saying the people of the country are with the people in the fight against the mining mafias. He also urged Goans to take the lead against alcohol and liquor consumption and show an example to the rest of the country. Noted human rights activist, Shabnam Hasmi said that Goans have not seen the kind of violence and the kind of mindset witnessed in many part of India, including Delhi. “This mindset is shifting away towards the right. The gravity of the situation is perhaps not realized, because you have not seen violence. Violence is the last stage of communalization of society. Violence takes place when there is hatred in your heart. Please do not wish for such a situation’, she appealed. He said questions such as on Kabrastan were raised in Gujarat too before the state went out of control. Recalling her visit to Goa after the Guddemal violence, Hasmi said she was shocked to learn how people from other villages were mobilized to attack people, adding “it is exactly how villages were attacked in the 2002 Gujarat riots”. Ram Punanai also spoke. In his address, Convenor for the Council for Social Justice and Peace, Fr Maverick Fernandes said the purpose of the meeting is to find ways and means to strengthen secularism in Goa. “We cannot close our eyes and say nothing is going on when there is an agenda to destroy our secular fabric”, he said. The meeting resolved with one voice to affirm secularism and to combat communalism in Goa. The Outsider The Goan Muslim has never been thought of as an outsider in Goa. The Muslim community

[Goanet] Goans gears up for Sao Joao - it's tomorrow 24th June
GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994) Siolim gears up for Sao Joao Sao Joao Feast will be celebrated in Goa on June 24 with traditional enthusiasm as men will plunge in their neighbourhood wells, rivulets and natural lakes with the loud chanting of Sao Joao, Sao Joao, Viva Sao Joao. Though the feast has its origin in the Holy Bible, people crossing across religious lines celebrate the feast. It is believed that St John the Baptist leapt with joy in his mother, Elizabeth's womb when she was visited by Mother Mary, who had just conceived Jesus. It is in this background that many jump in wells in Goa to celebrate the feast. In the coastal villages of Calangute, Anjuna, Vagator and Siolim in Bardez taluka, the Sao Joao Feast is celebrated in a grand manner too. In Siolim, the celebration takes place at many places including Marna, Fernandes Vaddo, Gaunsavaddo and Igrej waddo. In Gaunsawaddo, many celebrate Sao Joao Feast traditionally by distributing jackfruits, mangoes, etc and pouring water on newly-married daughters-in-laws. However, a large number of people flock to witness the grand boat parade in the rivulet opposite the Siolim Church. The Sao Joao celebrations here have a history of about 175 years, however, the event then was on a small scale with youth from neighbouring places coming down in decorated boats wearing crowns of tender coconut leaves, singing mandos and playing the ghumot. After reaching near the cross in front of the church they light candles for the cross, put a garland, lit firecrackers, perform 'saud' and dance chanting Sao Joao. The boat procession replicates the entry of the Portuguese merchants along with the miraculous statue of St Anthony. The event was revived in 1992 by some like-minded persons from Siolim, who came together and the San Joao Traditional Boat Parade was thus born. Later in 1997, some youth came forward and formed the Siolim Sao Joao Traditional Boat Festival Committee that now organises the event every year. John De Souza, a 67-year-old man, from Badem who will be celebrating his 50th year of participation in Siolim San Joao has the unique distinction of dressing as St John De Baptist for last several years. He recalls how Siolim Sao Joao has undergone a change from his childhood days until today but was glad that the basics have been retained. Another prominent personality who also takes part in Siolim Sao Joao festival is Simon from Zhor. He dresses as a lady wearing a 'kopel' on his head and dancing to the tune of 'Sao Joao Sao Joao Ghunvta Mure.' www.navhindtimes.com Rewon Gomes PHOTOGRAPHER http://rewon-gomes.8k.com/san-joao/
[Goanet] Threat of confiscation
GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994) Threat of confiscation About 482 British nationals were summoned to appear in court with the illegal threat of confiscation and questioned as to why they bought property in Goa. This was two years ago and those poor people are still living under that threat. The Indian government is refusing visas to those who dare comment on this matter, which is surely a violation of our human rights? We as a nation have committed some 400 million pounds in aid to India and this must be called into question. I request concerned citizens to sign a petition on this subject at http://petitions.num-ber10.gov.uk/goahomes/. As the petition says, about 50,000 Goans live, work and own property in the UK, and why can’t the same courtesies be afforded to us? [Goanet] Goa – At the zenith of Indian football
GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994) Football Matters Goa – At the zenith of Indian football Friday, 19. June 2009 - Sujay Sharma The small western state has capitalized on its innate love of the beautiful game and built on it well, and now stands atop the Indian football pyramid. Goa won the recently concluded Santosh Trophy. That too with relative comfort when you consider their defence did not concede a single goal in the whole of the tournament. That end-result surprised no one. But it did make a lot many very happy. A lot of Goans of course, but even many others who yearn for a sustained improvement in Indian football. To these people and more, Goa’s success reflects the success of doing the basics well. And the Santosh Trophy was not the culmination of a process of the rise of Goan football to Indian football’s peak. It is just one of those barometers along the way indicating the reasonably successful efforts taking place. There have been many more such barometers, and will probably continue to be. Four out of the last five Indian league champions have been Goan teams. Dempo thrice in 2005, 2007, and 2008. Churchill now in 2009. Even Mahindra United in their year of triumph in 2006 owed a lot of their success to Goa, with a Goan coach Derrick Pereira, Goan defensive rock Mahesh Gawli, and an invincible run of results on the relatively carpet-like pitch at Fatorda. While the Goan Armando Colaco along with his Goan support staff of Mauricio Afonso and Mahesh Lotlikar with a predominant bunch of local Goan players could all take credit for Dempo’s imperious domination, Churchill Brothers winning of the league also needed a strong Goan hand despite the thrust of Odafe and the North-East contingent of players. For it was the much maligned and rustic Goan politicial Churchill Alemao, blessed with an incredible knack of getting the right foreign striker or coach, who so backed Odafe and the team’s development following their promotion year. Until the floodlights didn’t give way in 2007, and that too not much due to the fault of the Goan Football Association, Fatorda hosted the AFC Cup games of all the non-Kolkata teams. They have three proper football stadiums to host national level matches if required, in Fatorda at Madgaon, Mapusa at Duler, and Tilak at Vasco. They have the first and currently only operational international standard artificial turf facility dedicated purely to football in the whole of the country, at Chowgule College in Madgaon – a facility that is overcrowded with I-League teams scrambling to conduct their pre-seasons during the Monsoons. They have many training fields with enough grass to enable decent passing drills among others, the model one at picturesque Cuncolim often the base of the Indian national team (Most Indian cities, with Mumbai, Calcutta, and Delhi included, don’t have a single level and grass covered football pitch that stays so 365 days of the year). They have the highest number of ILeague clubs for any Indian state (only Maharashtra matches them). They have the only Professional local State league, in the Vodafone Goa Pro League. They have innumerable village tournaments, which are second to nowhere else in the country when it comes to Amateur football, and definitely a cut above the Kerala 7s and West Bengal ‘para’-tournaments that compare closest. They have a large network of youths participating in football tourneys, and with reasonably qualified coaches to coach these future players. They have more AFC Pro-Licensed coaches than from any other state (two in the form of Savio Medeira and Derrick Pereira, with TN having Sounderajan and Meghalaya having Shangpliang – and that’s it!). Mind you, Goa has its limitations too. It can all just not be put down to an inherent passion for football that Goans possess. Ok, to an extent it helps. But if passion were all it took to be the best state in Indian football, West Bengal or Kerala could have been better. If sponsorship and corporate presence was all that it took, Mumbai or Delhi could have been better. If sporting infrastructure was all that it took, Karnataka (Bangalore), Tamil Nadu (Chennai), or even Hyderabad (Gachibowli) could have been better. If sporty physique and diet was all that it took, Punjab could have been better. If skillful and determined players, looking to make a living from football, to alleviate themselves from poverty, was all that it took, Manipur or Meghalaya could have been better. But none are. Goa is at the zenith of Indian football right now. They don’t have the best of most things. But they are making the best of what they have. And the rest of the Indian states need to follow their example in the very least, if not the ambitious and detailed Visions of AFC or the European Associations that are the ultimate benchmark of standards being targeted. http://www.indianfootball.com/ Forwarded by Laurie Miranda Sing
