[Goanet] Thank You (Life is too short)

2011-07-19 Thread Rabindra Pimenta

Dear Joegoauk,

Your message on 'Life is too short' has truly touched my heart.
Let me tell you today, that it is you who needs to be thanked by all of us for
the wonderful work that you do without seeking any reward.
You are indeed a rare gem among persons, and we are so fortunate to be
associated with you, even though you prefer to remain unidentified.
I for one will always remain indebted to you for the immense contributions you
have afforded to Goa and Goans.
Also I take it as a personal favour done to me, for I have gained a lot from
your post, pictures, videos, wisdom, selflessness, etc.
How I wish there would be more Goans like you!!!

Warm regards and best wishes,
Rabindra Pimenta

Thank You (Life is too short)

Well, believe me or not, I wanted to say it for the last 2 years
but somehow kept on postponing it until tomorrow.
 Who has seen tomorrow ham?
Yes, ?life is too short? and I strongly believe that.
So, why ?Tomorrow? when you can do it ?Today??
So, here I am doing it today
(coming in the centre stage with mic in my hand..)
I, on behalf of JoeGoaUk, like to thank each one of you for
 your support and well wishes.
I also like to apologise for not doing it all this time.

Dear Venita,

Kudos to you for a wonderful insight into our past. I believe everything you
have written is well worth remembering and wish that more of our fellow Goans

very impressive article, indeed! A must read for everyone.

As he spoke about his father and all that he stood for I was reminded

who lived life on very strict terms and to very high values.

Condolence Message:

Noel Da Lima Leitao ... his memory will live forever!

The sad demise of a great Goan Sports personality, Noel Da Lima Leitao, has
come as a rude shock to Football lovers worldwide. In his death, Goa has lost
a worthy son, who had risen to great heights in the field of sports and went on
to help Vasco Sports Club to ressurect and re-group into a formidable team, in
recent times. He was a very good administrator and a noted commentator, who
did an excellent job for the cause of Goa and Goan Football. His actions spoke
louder than words!

He is certainly going to be missed by, not just Goa, but by the entire sports
loving community of the world, whose hearts he touched through his excellent
commentary and expert comments on ESPN.

My deep condolences to his breaved family members. May his soul rest in peace.

Rabindra Pimenta

Yes Alfredo, Noel is Urminda's son. He is the fourth child His eldest
sister Marise d'Lima is a close friend. He died of a massive heart attack in
Calcutta at the Hyatt Regency where he had gone to commentate a football
match at the Salt Lake Stadium. He must have died late Saturday night,
because his body was discovered Sunday afternoon. He was the
anchor/moderator for Lambert's book launch and spoke very well.

[Goanet] 'CM hails Churchill Bros' - Letter to Editor by B. Pereira

2009-04-30 Thread rabindra pimenta

Dear Friends,

While reading the 'oHeraldo' online today, I was very impressed by the letter
to the Editor, of Mr. Babluis Pereira, which is reproduced herebelow:

It is high time we realise, the fact, that Football is being dominated by
foreign players, under the patronage of our Goan Clubs. Big money is being
paid to these foreign Players and Coaches, which can be utilised to produce our
own.

The writer has beautifully expressed his views and it, certainly, calls for
introspection, by all sports loving Goans.

Football is in our blood, so let us hope more Good Footballers Rise and Shine!
And may the Promoters of Football, work towards achieving the ultimate goal.

Cheers!!!

Rabindra Pimenta
Kuwait.

Quote

Babluis Pereira, Pompurpa
This refers to the news item ‘CM hails Churchill Bros’

(Herald, 17 April). Hats off to Churchill Bros for winning

the prestigious I-League crown. But how can Goans feel

proud when all the I-League awards were taken by the

Churchill Bros Nigerian striker Odafe Okolie, who dedicated

the victory to his second son! He should have dedicated the

victory to the club’s Goan supporters, the club’s patron,

or his late father/mother, but not to his second son.
Thousands of Goan football lovers watched the match. It was

unfortunate that Goan fathers, mothers and families could

not see their Goan sons netting goals and making Goa proud.

There were hardly two or three Goans in the team; the rest

were all outstation and foreign players. Foreign players

are shining in Goa’s number one sport, and our Goan players

are warming the benches. Why then do we say: “Football runs

in Goans’ blood?”
From the ’60s to the ’80s, Goan players with their creative

football donned the colours of leading Indian clubs and

brought laurels to the state. The ABCD quartet of Vasco

Sports Club shook all-India tournaments with their powerful

skills, trained by a home coach. Now our home coaches are

sidelined, and everybody wants foreign coaches.
Goans need no foreign coaches, players and academies.

Football is in their blood. Given the chance, our home

coaches can mould our youngsters to international levels.

Many groups oppose foreign culture in Goa. I am surprised

how they tolerate foreign players stealing the glory from

Goan players on Goan soil. The government must make

football a state game, and ban foreign players.

Apart from that, I must say that his record is impeccable. He is one upright

I beleive all that Mr. Valmiki has stated in his reply is absoluletely correct,

silenced the guns.

Well done Valmiki! Keep going!!!

Subject: Re: [Goanet] Contribution of Valmiki, Digambar, Timblo to Goa
 Dear Samir and Cecil,

First, a word on what Cecil said. Contesting, winning and then
holding public office is NOT, imho, a contribution to one's
homeland. For a straight man like Mathany, contesting itself may
incur sacrifice. For the crooks in power, it could be viewed as a
contribution ... but working in reverse gear! What matters is
what one does, or sincerely tries to, when one holds public office.
Any of such achievements could be a 'contribution' -- but then,
in a severely limited way. (Why are people elected to public office
 but to achieve some good?)

And Samir, if your idea of contribution to Goa in recent years is
to have got yourself nominated (by my friend Manohar Parrikar, when
a BJP Chief Minister of Goa?) as director of Goa Infotech Corpn
and then bitten the hand that fed you (with good reason, I know!),
I'm afraid I would have little to say about my own contribution to Goa
in recent years -- neither Parrikar nor Digambar deigned me fit to be
appointed director on any state Corporation :-)

(The only person who did that, without asking me, was my respected
senior college lecturer in Mercantile Law, by now a Minister of State
in Delhi's Union Govt, Eduardo Faleiro -- who put me on some board
of the then 'Prasar Bharati' TV region HQ-ed in Bombay. I didn't attend
a single meeting -- and neither encashed a single cheque sent by way
of sitting fees. But I ain't a saint.)

That apart -- the fact that neither Parrikar nor Digambar appointed me a
director on any state Corporation -- I would never blow my own trumpet
to tell you and Goanet what a great Goan contributor I've been. (Would
have said this earlier, but was curious to see how you would respond to
my earlier rejoinder, which, characteristically, you chose not to.)

If truth be told, I think I have 'contributed' nothing, but am now, in my own
little way and in my area of competence, hoping to contribute something
 in the near future.

I guess you and me are the same age. What I did when Municipal
President of Margao in 1985-87, you ought to have known -- or found
out from old timers among the citizenry, councillors, perhaps even
municipal employees themselves ... who hated me while I was in
the chair, but I'm told the surviving ones think differently today. Why,
you could have asked your own dad, who was a prominent Trustee of
the 'Novem Goem Pratisthan' -- at least he might have remembered
how I got the then Council (that included present Goa ministers like
Digambar Kamat and Babu Azgaonkar, and former ministers like
Luis Alex Cardoso) to adopt a policy that the municipality's advertising
must go primarily to local newspapers ... Rashtramat Novem Goem,
 both, alas, defunct.

You could have phoned friends who lived in Margao in 1985-87, who
might have told you that this rascal called v contributed nothing, but did
make a slight difference to their experience with officials/staff whenever
they had occasion to visit the municipal offices on their work. Or people in
Malbhat or so many other former pigsty places round town ... that one today
even boasts of a noted hospital chain in India.

You made me open my mouth. But pointers are only what I will utter having
 done that.

From your parting thoughts on me below, may I ask, do you take me for some
kind of a crusader? The Crusades happened long ago! This is the era of
hard politics, money, and whatever more it takes. I'm not made of the stuff
 fit
to be a politician. That's one reason I politely declined election tickets
 from
established political parties, to contest the Goa Assembly polls from Margao.
I will not name names (and embarrass friends who are around), but if you
enquire enough locally, you will know I'm speaking the truth.

Now to the other part of your original mail (Goanetters still around, please
click the 'delete' button, unless you want to die from boredom!)

Are you trying to suggest that Digu Kamat and Avdhoot Timblo have done
no good to Goa at all? I'm not saying they are saints -- are you and I ??

 Take a break. Come

[Goanet] Is Parrikar offiering Goans a Pie in the Sky .... again?

2009-04-15 Thread rabindra pimenta

Dear Dr. Jose,

I applaud your well considered views on the appeasement policy, being pursued
by the politicians to win over the Goan voters, during election time.

Indeed, you have exposed the hollow promises of BJP very beautifully. I wish
Mr. Parrikar takes the time to respond to your 3Qs, and enlighten the
GoaNetters, what are his real intentions.

With warm regards,

Rabindra Pimenta

 From: J. Colaco jc cola...@gmail.com
Subject: [Goanet] Is Parrikar offering Goans a Pie in the Sky
 again?

?It is a small state. Large scale migrations from other regions could
change the demographic identity of Goa in no time,? he said and
promised that if elected to power, the BJP would amend article 371 of
the constitution to accord special status to Goa. ?We need immediate
restrictions on the sale and conversion of land,? Parrikar said.

 Q 1: What does Art 371 say?

Q2: How can the Indian Constitution be amended?

Q3: Is this another Pie in the Sky train? Please see Art 368 (infra)

 jc

If one looks at? Art 368 (2) of the Indian Constitution, this is how
 any amendment can be made.

An amendment of this Constitution may be initiated only by the
introduction of a Bill for the purpose in either House of Parliament,
and when the Bill is passed in EACH House by a majority of the total
membership of that House and by a majority of not less than two-thirds
of the members of that House present and voting,

Q4: So, the BJP will have 2/3rd majority in BOTH houses of Parliament
 - anytime soon?

[Goanet] Opinion Poll of Goa - A perspective.

Dear Friends,

Greetings to each one of you!

In the course of the current discussions on the Freedom Fighters, I was quite
surprised to read that the credit of the victory of the
Opinion Poll of Goa is being given Dr. Jack de Sequeira alone. In this
connection, I would like to shed some light on the real
situation that prevailed during the historic Opinion Poll and who were the real
‘unsung heroes’ who deserve more credit than
anyone else. The untold story goes somewhat like this:

The Opinion Poll to maintain the status of Goa was fought by all the 12
Opposition Party M.L.A.s, who were elected to the
Legislative Assembly of the Union Territory of Goa, Daman Diu, for the term
1963-68. Each of the 12 M.L.A.s named
below played a vital role in ensuring the victory of the Opinion Poll. They
are:

Dr. Jack de Sequeira, Panjim; Mr. J.L.J. Araujo, St. Cruz; Mr. J.M. D’Souza,
Calangute; Mr. Valente Sequeira, Aldona;
Mr. Teotonio Pereira, St. Andre; Dr. Luis Proto Barbosa, Cortalim; Smt. Urminda
Lima Leitao, Murmagao;
Dr. Marelio Furtado, Benaulim; Mr. Vasudev Salmarkar, Margao; Mr. Enio Pimenta,
Curtorim; Dr. Alvaro Loyola Furtado,
Navelim; Mr. Sebastiao Mazrello, Cuncolim.

Apart from the 12 United Goans (Sequeira Furtado Groups) M.L.A.s of that
time, a large number of genuine Goan Leaders,
other than those associated with the Maharashtra Gomantak Party, Renowned
Tiatrists, Press Personnel, Industrialists,
Businessmen Common men/women, joined forces to fight the historic Opinion
Poll, under the banner of Anti-Merger Front,
and worked tirelessly to ensure that the status of Goa remained intact, along
with Daman Diu, as it’s integral parts.

In my honest opinion, it is very unfair and unjust to single out, Dr. Jack de
Sequeira, as the architect of the Opinion Poll and
attribute the victory to him. He has played the role just as every other Goan
has played. No doubt, he was one of the many
who deserved the credit for the historic landslide victory, but the fact
remains that the victory was, mainly due to the huge
differences in votes polled in the constituencies of South Goa. No single
leader could have ever saved Goa from merger,
had it not been for the over whelming support of the people of Goa. Let is be
clearly understood that it was purely a victory
of the PEOPLE of GOA and no one else needs to be given credit for the same. It
is the true GOANS who saved GOA!

Long Live Goa and Goans!!

With kind regards,

Rabindra Pimenta

Goanet mourns the passing of Jorge de Abreu Noronha in Portugal - Nov 27/07

---

Adeus! Mogal Jorge-babak…..

Mr. Jorge de Abreu Noronha is gone, but he will never be forgotten. His
cherished memory will always remain fresh in our minds and hearts.

Indeed! I am saddened by the news of Mr. Jorge de Abreu Norohna’s passing away
on 27th November, 2007, in Portugal. His writings on the Goanet, always drew
my attention and I would never miss an opportunity to read his postings, which
were very informative and educative, devoid of any malice or controversies.
His in-depth knowledge on matters related to Goa’s history, culture, heritage,
language and way of life of Goans, was so vast that I used to admire him
deeply. Although away from his motherland, his profuse love for Goa and Goans,
was immense.

In his passing away Goa has lost an illustrious son and we, on this forum, have
lost an Educationist par excellence. His knowledge was like a fountain from
where, anyone could draw countless inspirations and fall in love with our
motherland and mother tongue.

At this moment of grief, all that we can do is pray for the repose of his soul
in his heavenly abode, and pray God gives his beloved wife Mrs. Livia, children
and other family members, enough courage and strength to bear this irreparable
loss.

May the soul, of our dear friend, mentor and guide, JorgeBab, rest in peace.

Sorgichem raj tumkam favo zaumchem.

Yours in sorrow,

Rabindra Pimenta
Kuwait/Curtorim.

Those you who read Jorge de Abreu Noronha here,
will have to miss him hereafter.

That quintessential Goan, forever on a quest of
knowledge, esp. of matters Goan, passed away in
Portugal this morning. Jorge was 77 and leaves
behind his wife, Livia ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
 and family.

Jorge was last on the board of editors translating
Goan litterateur, Dr. Manoharrai Sardessai's poems.
He was, if I err not, in charge of translating that other
great man's poems in the French language.

The absolutely saintly Jorge will no doubt rest in peace.
Let's pray heaven will grant Livia the fortitude to bear
 this terrible loss.

 Valmiki

[Goanet] A Tribute to Sanny de Quepem

2007-11-12 Thread rabindra pimenta

A Tribute to Cruz Sanny Vaz

A voice that was so mild and melodious is silenced forever

In a shocking revelation, the news of the passing away of a renowned
personality,
Sanny de Quepem, who left us so suddenly, on the 9th of November, 2007, has
griped
not only his family members but also all those who knew him closely.

In his passing away, Goa has lost a worthy son, who toiled, all his life, for
the greater glory of
Goa and Goans. Undoubtedly, he has left an indelible mark on the sands of time
and will be long
remembered for the wonderful work he had undertaken to serve his fellow Goans.
It is indeed sad
that, due to his untimely death, he had to leave his work unfinished. He has
gone but his memory
will linger on and on.

It was my privilege to know him personally and also to talk to him in the
morning on 9th November,
during the celebrations of Goa Day 2007. His last performance on the Konkani
stage was around
8.00 p.m., where he enthralled the audience with his beautiful voice while
rendering a meaningful
konkani song, his own composition. I was in shock when I learnt of his sad
demise, which occurred
after he went home later that night, due to a severe cardiac attack.

Let us all pray for the repose of his soul in his heavenly abode and pray God
grants enough courage
and strength to his wife, children and other loved ones, to bear the
irreparable loss that has befallen
the family. May his soul rest in peace.

Yours in sorrow,

Rabindra Pimenta
Kuwait.
