[Goanet] FOOTBALL BALL AT CHURCH SQUARE AND ON THE MIRAMAR BEACH?

2017-10-06 Thread Stephen Dias
Dear Rui Ferreira
Panjimite and Lawyer

You are staying very close to this Church square and being an advocate, why
did you not take this matter as serious issue? Is CCP sleeping? .
How you tolerated this Football BALL coming in front of the Panjim Church
although it could be a world event but displaying this BALL on the footpath
in front of our Panjim Church should not have been permitted. Azad Maidan
could have been a better choice. Tomorrow somebody may use the same
technique and display, say Nadkarsur and other Sigmo and Carnival
exhibits etc for business/propaganda purposes in the same spot. I saw
yesterday at 6 PM artists working on construction of this BALL to be
displayed. Shame for Goan players being out of this game selection?
The Church being a world famous should have been kept away from such
propaganda and advertisement etc I do not understand why our
Archbishop have not objected it? What is happening in this Panjim ?
Even another BALL is being displayed on the sands right on the Miramar
beach when already this beach is in ruins with the Lucky seven resided with
comfort for 72 days over there and it seems this beach is now under
access or inspection by the NIO and other agencies including the Court.
When we will get a report? Why the Government is closing their eyes? For
what purpose? I do not understand when damaged is already taken place to
this Beach with the tourists playing football and other games on the beach,
as erosion is very clearly seen. Some of our well known
environmentalists are quite except very few of them and my colleague Dr.
Antonio Mascarenhas ex-GCZMA expert is the only one who is doing most of
the noise. I fought for this Lucky seven to get out from this area and
finally she left crying. Hope she never set her foot in Mandovi after dry
docking at Jaigad. If she is allowed she must get approvals from MMD and
other govt shipping agencies. CM already set a deadline to get rid of these
casinos and why she ( Lucky seven ) should be invited?
Better people of Panjim should get up and stand on the roads for a better
and clean Panjim before it is too late.

Football fever grips Chandigarh at Mission XI Million festival

Mission XI Million Festival found another warm host in the beautiful city of
Chandigarh a day after spreading smiles in the 'City of Lakes', Bhopal just
yesterday. Like all the festivals till now, the one held at Chandigarh also saw
students from all over the city coming and participating with great enthusiasm.
The kids from the city that serves as the administrative capital of both Punjab
and Haryana, also learnt a great deal about the game and its nuances apart from
participating in friendlies that saw some quality football being played.
The festival held at Chandigarh's Sports Complex in Sector 42 was attended by
close to 500 students who had thronged the venue from around 50 schools in the
city. They keenly listened to the Official Mascot of the FIFA U-17 World Cup
India 2017, Kheleo, talk about the upcoming tournament and the MXIM programme
before playing exhibition games and battled hard for several tournament sponsor
merchandise on offer as prizes. Several workshops were also conducted at the
venue for the participants.
Project Director of the Local Organising Committee for FIFA U-17 World Cup
India 2017, Joy Bhattacharjya said, "It is brilliant to see yet another city
responding so warmly and enthusiastically to Mission XI Million. With every
city and every festival, we are reaching closer to the goal of making football
the popular choice of sport in the country".
More than 6 million kids have been reached so far as a part of the project that
aims to get eleven million children in contact with the beautiful game before
the FIFA U-17 World Cup that starts in the month of October.

IS CAMPAL GROUND GSUDA SCAM OF ELVIS GOMES?

Attached please find my letter and comments in regards to the proposed
Campal grounds to be constructed by GSUDA. I strongly object to this fancy
ground coming up at the parade ground at Campal as it will block the
traffic flow, and cause accidents as well as flooding and damage to the
entire Campal region of Panjim Constituency. I had also exposed the nexus
between Dr. Joe D’Sousa and Mr. Manohar Parrikar ex-CM that are responsible
and the brain behind this idea of the Campal ground for sports activities.
My attached letter had indicated that both Dr. Joe and Mr. Parrikar are
non residents of Panjim and hence have no right to propose the football
ground at Campal.

Now, I understand that Prime TV on 30th June 2015 too is supporting Mr.
Parrrikar and Dr. Joe D’Sousa for their foolish venture for ulterior
motives. I still do not know and I hope that people of Panjim come together
to see that the white elephant in the name of Campal ground is stalled and
another major scam is averted. Unfortunately I do not have Dr. Joe article
published on Gomantak Times dt. 24th Nov. 2014.

FOOTBALL STADIUM AT CAMPAL MUST BE PUT OFF BY PARSEKAR

This is in response to the article published in Gomantak Time dated
24th November,
2014 by Dr. Joe D’Souza.

Dr. Joe D’Souza mentions in his article that former Chief Minister Manohar
Parrikar had been a MLA from Panjim for the last 20 years. In fact he is
not originally from Panjim but from Bardez side. Also Dr. Joe himself is
not from Panjim but from Vagator near Calangute. He may be right that
Parrikar has given his parting gift for a football stadium at Campal for
Panjimites. But I am sure both of them never played football in any
divisional team especially my friend Dr. Joe. What knowledge they will have
of football stadiums? To understand about the stadium or football matches
one has to be associated in football games which I do not think so.

Now, since Dr. Joe writes an article saying that football stadium of
international standard must come at Campal he is completely wrong. First of
all there is not enough area for the parking and other facilities of
international status. The main road of Panjim to Miramar will be completely
obstructed and jam for motor traffic vehicles.

No doubt we had a small playground during Portuguese regime in this
locality but one has to forget to have of international stature.

It is advisable that the ground may be selected or acquired possession of
land at Merces where Prime Minister Modi had delivered his speech for over
a lack crowd. It is definitely suitable for the games of international
caliber as there exist a vast parking.

He also mentions that the city fathers of the Corporation of City of Panaji
started dumping garbage and concealing it with debris of gravel and mud and
the CCP has misused and abused this prime property under the very nose of
residents of Panjim and also dumping hospital waste, plastic and the
hazardous leachates is all humbug and cheap utterances which are uncalled
for. He has forgotten being an environmentalist that the garbage could be
easily cleared within a month’s time and that this is not the type of
Sonsodo garbage accumulation at Margao. Once a stadium is built than this
will become a permanent solution.

The idea of pressing for football ground in his article is just to please
the new Government and GSUDA officials for ulterior motives and that
probably government may sympathize.

We request the authorities of Panjim and the future MLA whoever may be
should give us a gift to real Panjimites by opposing this football ground
stadium at Campal-Panjim.

[Goanet] FOOTBALL - MARIANO BARETTO KEEN ON INDIAN ROLE - source : goanvoice.org.uk

2013-03-18 Thread Camillo Fernandes

Indian football authorities should know what they want, felt Portugal- based
pro Uefa- licenced coach Mariano Baretto. The Goaborn former coach of Ghana is
open to helping Indian football in any capacity if approached by the concerned
authorities.“I come to Goa, my birth place, almost every year twice or thrice
because I want to stay connected with India. If the Goa Football Association or
the AIFF wants me to help here, I will be open for the offer,” said Baretto who
has worked with different clubs in Portugal and Russia.Baretto, who was invited
by the Goa Development Football Council to express his views in the Goa
International Football Table on Saturday, said: “India need to first think what
they want and give enough time and decide on how to make it happen. It is a
cycle involving youth and parents and gradually you will find results,” he said.
“Lack of infrastructure and facilities is no excuse. Players like Messi,
Ronaldo began playing on streets. Scouts identify players and they go to clubs
and national teams and continue to learn.“There is a need to organise
competitions in streets, schools then at the interstate and the national level,
making it competitive,” he said.

[Goanet] Football Story from Norway

2012-08-27 Thread Linken Fernandes
E D’souza writes: what is the moral of the story? A draw is a win win?

You aren’t the first to wonder. A bit of context might help. Have you ever
heard of a football team refusing to accept a penalty awarded them by
mistake? Think of all those creative forwards diving right, left and centre
to earn a penalty. Next, which footballer in the world protests an
erroneous decision that benefits his team? The funny thing was, the
protesting player kept complaining till the referee had to send him off for
dissent and disrespect for his authority. Imagine being sent off for
insisting that an injustice be undone! Once he left the field, his
colleague came up, and, of course, shot the penalty wide. Why? Because “it
was the right thing to do!”

It gets funnier. The opposing team won’t be outdone in fair play. They
withdraw one of their players from the match because the other team was
playing with just ten. They wanted an even contest, and this, when they
were trailing 1-3! And, brother, did fate reward them for their
magnanimity? They earned two penalties in the second-half and drew the game
3-3.

But now the other team’s penalty misser was unhappy. He kept grumbling
about the second penalty which helped the opponents draw the match!

The poor referee couldn’t have put it better: I don't really understand
that. First he shoots wide on purpose, then he complains when the other
team scores. It's hopeless.

[Goanet] Football Story from Norway

2012-08-26 Thread Linken Fernandes
This is too good a story to not share.

A player from the Norwegian fifth tier league was shown a

red card after protesting against a penalty awarded to

himself. Sandved's Talat Abunima was playing against Ild

when he fell to the floor in the penalty area. Yet the 36-

year-old claimed afterwards he tripped over his own feet.

The referee, Nedzad Munjic, awarded the penalty and

originally gave a yellow card to the player for protesting,

before, then, sending Abunima off for continuing his

argument.

Speaking to local newspaper, Sandnesposten, the player

said: I went past an Ild player and then tripped over my

own feet. It was unbelievably clumsy of me and when the

referee pointed to the spot I felt I had to speak out.

However, defending his decision to award two yellow

cards, the referee told VG Nett: It was a clear penalty. The

player got it all wrong – I don't think the players know the

rules properly. And when I've blown the whistle, I can't

change my mind.

The drama did not end there. Oyvind Svenning eventually

took the spot kick, deliberately missing from 12 yards,

claiming it was the right thing to do.

Then, with Sandved leading 3-1, Ild withdrew one player to

make the sides even, yet were themselves awarded two

penalties late on, converting both to earn a 3-3 draw.

The guy who missed on purpose complained a lot about

the penalty that led to the 3-3 goal, the referee later added.

I don't really understand that. First he shoots wide on

purpose, then he complains when the other team scores.

It's hopeless.

Abunima has since had his red card rescinded and is

available for selection for Sandved's next game.

[Goanet] Football, The Greatest Sport On Earth

2012-05-16 Thread Freddy Fernandes
Football, The Greatest Sport On Earth

We Goans love our football even though our standard is way below international
standard and we only hope that some day in the near future we can match the
best in the world. With the technology getting bigger and better we are now
lucky to be watching world football live from the confines of our homes, yes,
today we have to often upset the ladies in our families to watch our favourite
league matches during their tearful soap episodes.

I love football from my childhood and I am strong fan of English Premier League
and to certain extent La Liga. I seldom miss good matches, Even though I am not
a die hard supporter of any team but I still have a slight soft corner for Real
Madrid and Manchester United, but I love to see the team playing well winning
it, which unfortunately sometimes does not happen and I often end up feeling
sad for that team, but I always enjoy good matches and good football none the
less.

Of all the seasons I have been glued to the TV or my laptop this just concluded
season was the most interesting in the EPL, Manchester City (MC)with their new
gained riches have acquired riches in talent that no other team in EPL has but
for once they did gel as a team, probably the 44 years of torture playing
second fiddle to Manchester United (MU) did give them the additional impetus in
the last few games when MU squandered an 8 points lead to take the Championship
to the last day.

At the start of the last season, once the transfer window was close at the end
of August, looking at the quality of the teams I had predicted an easy runaway
victory for the blue half of Manchester even though hoping against hope that MU
would turn the table on MC, but in my heart I knew MU were no match for the
talented MC, as, if player for player was taken into account position wise,
none of the MU players would make a grade over 5 in a 1 -10 grade with the
exception of Rooney, to make matters worse they had an unknown quality in goal,
whereas all MC players would be above 7 on the 1-10 graph with Silva, Yaya
Toure, Kompany and Joe Hart at 10/10.

As the season unfolded, to my surprise MU started well but as injuries crept
in, the ominous signs were there for all to see and none worse than the 6-1
mauling of MU at Old Trafford by MC, thereafter MC marched unhindered right up
to Christmas time but surprisingly Silva's dip in form saw MC wilting and MU's
professional approach saw the lead change hands so much so that with just five
games remaining MU were 8 points ahead and clear favourites and then the
unthinkable happened MU having wrestled the lead from MC offered it back to MC
on the second derby day to led on goal difference with just two games to go.
Loosing to Wigan and squandering a 4-2 lead in the last seven minutes against
Everton put MC in control of their own destiny but MU proved they were no
pushovers and fought to the finish.

A lot of us must have watched some breathtaking and heart stopping moments in
football at least once in our life time but what unfolded on manic or even
panic Sunday 13th May 2012 should never even happen again especially for guys
like me with a week heart. EPL goes into the last day with MC having the upper
hand as they have to just match MU's result and they win the Championship,
everybody, including me thought it would be just a formality as MC were playing
at home to relegation fighting QPR who had a dreadful away record, whereas MU
had a tougher mid-table opponents and playing away, I was just switching the
two channels one to the other every few minutes and then Rooney scored for MU
and MC were still draw at the Etihad, but I still knew it would be just a
matter of time when MC would score, and score they did 20 minutes after
Rooney's goal and you could see relief on the faces of MC supporters and agony
on the faces of the MU supporters but in the second half the game just turned
on it's head as QPR scored soon after the break thanks to a mistake by
defender Lescot and then out of the blues QPR scored again, now it was the turn
of the MC supporters to be shocked, everyone thought it was the end of the 44
year dream yet again. Expressions on the faces of MC supporters said it all.

QPR held on to the lead fighting hard, crowding out MC's raining attacks, they
fought well till the end of 90 minutes even though they were reduced to 10 men
by the 65th minute by moments of madness by their captain but they did not give
up, at the end of 90 minutes the news that MU had won over Sunderland and QPR
had survived relegation at the cost of Bolton filtered in and they relaxed and
that was just enough for MC to claw back to win, as two goals in two minutes of
stoppage time sealed the Championship. Both MU and MC players must have gone
through hell in those few minutes but we as spectators had our hearts going
into overdrive and suddenly skip a beat or two, as we watched in amazement the

[Goanet] Football is not about rankings: Jules Alberto Dias

Football is not about rankings: Jules Alberto

A trip down memory lane for Jules Alberto Dias of CArmona Goa now
based in UK when India beat United Arab Emirates one-nil in a World
Cup Qualifier in Bangalore, 2001. Jules Alberto, India's match-winner
on that day writes.

By Jules Alberto

Some memories just keep coming back. A certain match played ten years
back still rings a bell in my heart. Let it. I have no complaints.
With India slated to play United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the World Cup
Qualifier, the match has been coming back to me a bit too much in the
last couple of weeks.

It was 2001 and we hosted UAE at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in
Bangalore in the World Cup Qualifier for the 2002 Korea/Japan World
Cup. On paper, we didn’t have any chance; not to forget UAE were
coached by Henri Michel at that time. But we won one-nil.

IM Vijayan’s throw was long; a bit too long. I remember Bhaichung
Bhutia going for the ball and it deflected towards me. The UAE
goalkeeper was already out of his line and was rushing towards it. I
knew I had to reach for it before he could palm it away. I was off in
a flash and tapped it over him. Before it could bulge the net, I fell
on the ground; my team-mates were all over me.

The memory of that goal can’t die ever. It was a special moment; a
very special moment. My goal helped my country beat UAE. The 4
plus crowd went berserk. We made Headlines once again.

Looking back, I don’t feel it was an upset. We had gone down narrowly
to UAE some time back. And as we took the field that day in Bangalore,
the earlier loss spurred us on. There’s no denying that prior to the
kick-off we were a bit conscious. But football on the field is not
about rankings and big names. It’s all about who plays better on the
day.

It was a great team effort which helped us achieve the victory.
Everyone supported the other. The midfield pressed well; IM (Vijayan)
and Bhaichung shouldered extra responsibility – both falling back to
help the defence. But more than the defending, we played the waiting
game to perfection. Coach Sukhwinder Singh had planned everything.

The match opened doors for Indian Players to play abroad. But somehow,
it didn’t materialise. IM (Vijayan), Jo Paul Ancheri, Khalid Jamil and
myself had offers to move to Middle-East. But there was none to guide
us during those days – somehow we couldn’t route through the proper
channel.

Not being able to move abroad was a sort of setback but the victory
against UAE provided me inspiration to look ahead. And as we
celebrated wildly in the Dressing Room, I learnt my biggest lesson as
a footballer.

“The match is over. Tomorrow is a new day – another match. We need to
look ahead,” Sukhwinder’s comments pierced the Dressing Room, as we
headed to the Team Bus. We were taken aback at that moment.

But that’s football. Isn’t it?

[Goanet] Football Qatar V/S India

2011-06-19 Thread Mario Vicente Santos Pereira
Hi Goaneters,
I have watched the football match between Qatar v/s India. Both the teams
have equal players but it looks that Indian Team have less players on the
ground. Though this team is very strong and well organized one they do not
have proper control of the ball. We must give some critics to players to
improve the standard of the game. What I have seen is lack of team spirit
with Indian boys. They do not cover the places but just run after the
ball and get tired. Many times they do not mark the players properly.
Every where they run and sometimes two at a time and keeping a gap for the
opponent player to clear the ball easily. When two players going to
attack the ball the opponent gets a chance to pass the ball easily to his
partner who is on open ground. There the weakness arises and the
goalkeeper gets pressure to save the ball.
According to the strength of this team they would have won the match but
they fail to impress the spectators. Surely they will be able to beat
Qatar in their next home ground match in Pune.
All the best Viva football Viva Goa.

Mario Vicente Santos Pereira,

well although Barca had 71% possession of the ball vs Madrid's 29 % the
game was turning ugly. Then late in the game we saw two brilliant efforts by
Lionel Messi. We were watching one of the best Goals scored in the Champions

Looks like it will be a Man U vs Barca affair - if you don't think so -

Interesting someone remembered Garincha.

According to some, he was greater than Pele (who they claim stole the
limelight) and was a kind and a gentle soul. He died a under pretty
miserable conditions, battling depression, pennyless, forgotten and
consumed by alcohol (similar to Raphael, a non-Goan who played for
Vasco and Goa).

What they also realized Garincha was so great with the ball because of
a deformity in one of his legs. Apparently, it was almost impossible
to get the ball off his feet (again, something similar to the great
Vasco player, Domnic).

Here is a Garincha video:

I have a strange suspicion the Bra-Port game was a fixed result.
Difficult to prove but we know the ways of the old Lucio world *you
rub my back, I rub yours*.
What happened before the finals at the Stade de France (a la the real
Ronaldo) is still being speculated in the Brazilian press. I suspect
it was the bet*ing business!

A month of glorious football is staring at us. To enjoy it most , I think ,
we have to observe a couple
of self imposed rules which are as follows:
1. Do not pay too much attention to print and electronic media reports for
ultimately one is bound to
feel somewhat disappointed.
2. Choose three teams which you think may do well in the tournament.Watch
every game of theirs
right from the beginning . One could select the first two i.e. Brazil and
Spain and as for the third
one it could be any one of the following : Argentina, Italy, Netherlands
and Portugal . If you ask me
for my third choice, I would opt for Italy.

Football seeks a toehold in India

   By Delnaaz Irani
BBC World News, Shillong

[image: Football action from a Shillong Lajong game]
Shillong LaJong are the pride of football fans in India's north east

*On a typical day in Mawkasiang village on the outskirts of Shillong, life
is pretty peaceful.*

Farmers spend their days working the fields, while their wives tend to
household duties in straw huts.

But not on match day.

This seemingly peaceful village goes from ordinary shades of green to
electric red and white, the colours of their home football team Shillong
Lajong (which means our own).

The villagers in Mawkasiang are so passionate about football they all pool
their farmer salaries together and pitch in for a bus to take them to the
Nehru stadium in Shillong's city centre to watch the game.

We hitch a ride on the bus and it's an exhilarating experience.

There are two dozen supporters crammed in, and not enough seats to go
around.

Many are happy standing or hanging out the side of the bus waving their red
and white flags furiously out the window.

*Love of football*

Among the most vociferous fans on the bus is 24-year old farmer Banstar
Nongbri.

I love LaJong, says Banstar, a diehard fan who's been following the club
since he was a child.
[image: Diehard Shillong Lajong fan Banstar Nongbri]
Lajong fan Banstar Nongbri has been following the club since he was a child

I've never missed a game on home soil, except once, because I didn't have
enough money to travel.

Shillong LaJong are the pride of India's north east.

They are the only team from the region to have ever qualified for the
premier league of Indian football.

In a region which has suffered economically because of a long and bloody
history of violence, militancy and separatism, the people's love for
football is a unifying factor.

And the success of Shillong's football team is a massive feat celebrated in
almost every nook and cranny.

*Sea of people*

From the countryside to the main centre of town, a few kilometres away,
there is feet-stomping, fist-thumping merriment.

The busload of fans chant team anthems and familiar footy rhymes over and
over again, pausing briefly only to catch their breath.

The ruckus alarms those in the villages and markets we pass by, but even
they give their silent nod of approval.
[image: Shillong's football team supportes in the Nehru Stadium]
The Shillong support is made up of young and old fans

When we get to the city, a sea of people stretch out on either side of the
long, narrow walkway leading up to the gates of Nehru Stadium.

There are so many supporters, young and old, that it feels like almost the
entire township of Shillong has turned out for the game.

And inside the stadium, it's a colourful carnival.

Almost every stand in the 25,000-capacity stadium is packed.

In some stands, fans have come well prepared, accompanied with percussion
instruments and are banging away at a drum kit.

Other supporters cheer their team on, with all their vocal might.

*Company backing*

It is this sort of support that has seen this small club secure some big
sponsors.

It [qualifying for the Indian Premier League] has opened a window of
opportunity for a great number of companies to really endorse an entity in
the North Eastern region, says Larsing Sawyamhe, general secretary of
Shillong LaJong football club.

I think that is what really made companies like Nokia, who are our
principal sponsors, Kingfisher, McDowells and of course Adidas, who are our
merchandising sponsor, come in and support the club.

Even so, the number of sponsors in football fades in comparison to cricket.
[image: Larsing Sawyamhe, general secretary of Shillong LaJong football
club]
Larsing Sawyamhe says Shillong LaJong has attracted many sponsors

According to sports writer Ayaz Menon, football in India is valued at around
$65m (£101m), as opposed to cricket, which is well over a billion dollar
business.

In terms of just viewership, television or even live, Indian football
doesn't have too much of a viewership, says Mr Menon.

Unfortunately it is languishing. Nobody is watching the I-League on
television, I mean, there are measly numbers.

While a heck of a lot more people are watching the English Premier League
and other tournaments of that calibre and standard.

And one doesn't have to look too far to see what Mr Menon is talking about.

*Manchester United support*

In a dimly lit café recently opened by English Premier League Club,
Manchester United, in Mumbai, hundreds of fans are crammed in to watch a
match.

Covered head to toe in red team colours, their passion for the game is
abundant.

Each win is eagerly cheered and every miss equally jeered. This Indian

The football fraternity of India mourns the sudden passing away of
football commentator Noel da Lima Leitao...

Noel was found dead earlier today in his hotel room in Kolkata, only a
day after being a commentator in the final of the 114th IFA Shield.

Reactions by the football fraternity

It is a very sad news. We had worked together for a long time at the
Goa Football Association. I remember when we were building the Duler

Baichung Bhutia (Captain, India)
I am very shocked to hear about his demise. Noel was a great friend.
He has been very supportive throughout my career. I would like to
offer my condolences to his family and loved ones.

Jason Dasey (Former senior host of SportsCenter India and SportsCenter Asia)
Noel was one of the nicest and most knowledgeable guys I met in
Indian football. We worked together in the broadcast team for the 2004
final of the IFA Shield and have stayed friends ever since. His
comments were always perceptive, concise and hit the nail on the end.
I can't believe that he's gone: just last month I put a coaching
friend in-touch with Noel because he had so many contacts in Indian
football. My condolences go out to the family of this beautiful and
much-loved man.

Huw Bevan (ESPN Star Sports Senior Vice-President of Production)
Noel's passing is very sad and of course unexpected coming so soon
after he had been a part of our coverage of the IFA Shield. He was an
illuminating and erudite television personality whose passion and
knowledge of football always added so much value to our football
programming for so many years.

Climax Lawrence (Dempo SC India midfielder)
I am still in a state of shock. Noel has helped me a lot when i was
at Vasco Sports Club. He always backed me up, and used to offer
advice. He was a good human being and a great commentator. His death
is a big loss for the football fraternity in India.

Debayan Sen (Zee Sports commentator)
Noel was much more than a colleague for me. He was more like a friend
or an elder brother. Always on the side, his encouragement and
criticisms were always invaluable. I can speak for my company in
saying we'll miss him deeply.

Mayanti Langer (TV Anchor)
Noel was one of the most entertaining and unique commentators I've
had the pleasure of working with. He was at his best whenever Baichung
scored. His legacy remains with his loving family. God speed Noel.

Mahesh Gawli (Dempo SC India defender)
I was shocked to hear the news, he was a good human being and a
sports lover who used to encourage, motivate and guide me whenever I
met him. May his soul rest in peace!

Savio Messias (Goa Football Association Secretary)
His death was totally unexpected. He was a great administrator and
one with lot of foresight. He was a great inspiration for Vasco Sport
Club and Goan football.

Derrick Pereira (ex-Vasco SC Coach from 2001-2005, Vasco native, and
current Pune FC Coach)
I was completely shocked to hear of this unfortunate demise. My
neighbour had called my wife in the afternoon to enquire about this
matter, and it was only then that I heard about it. I had the
opportunity to work with him for many years during my tenure as Vasco
coach. He always encouraged me and our team, and those were my
starting years as a coach in the NFL. He was a well-known person in
our home-town of Vasco, and a great supporter of football here. After
the news I visited my old friends from Vasco SC in the evening, and we
were all just too shocked. He was very passionate about football, and
that showed in his commentary, which he was very good at in his own
unique style. Indian football will really miss him.

Karim Bencharifa (Mohun Bagan coach)
I am destroyed. I heard the news on arrival in Delhi and could not
believe it. I saw and spoke to Noel yesterday at the Saltlake Stadium.
He actually called me up after the game and asked me to come across to
his hotel for dinner. He said all will want to interact with the
winning coach, but i'd rather sit with the losing coach and discuss
football with you.
I had gotten to know Noel very well in my time in Goa and really
enjoyed his company. He was a knowledgeable gentleman, who loved
football and had a passion for the game.
It is a big loss for Indian football.
My condolences to his wife and the children. May his soul rest in peace.

Chirag Tanna (Head of Operations, Pune FC)
I was shocked when I read the story and would first like to give my
heartfelt condolences to his family.
I had the pleasure of meeting Noel at an AIFF meet in our inaugural
season. He came across as a person who was extremely passionate about
Indian Football. He will be missed dearly by the Indian football
fraternity.

Sukhvinder Singh (AIFF Marketing Head)
Noel reminds me of the energy and charisma that he possessed. It is a

*Football: Viva Goa! *

*The Intra-Gulf Goan tournament in Doha provides lovers of the game from the
Indian state with plenty of nostalgic moments, writes Kumar Ravi.*

[image: Image]IT WAS a nostalgic evening at the Al Ahli Sports Club, last
Friday, for football lovers from India living in Qatar. More so for those
who belong to the Indian state of Goa.

The occasion was the Intra-Gulf Goan tournament, organised by the Goan
Welfare Association, Qatar.

Sun, sand and soccer is the USP of Goa, which is gradually becoming the No.1
football centre in India, with as many as four teams featuring in the
I-League.

The Goans' love for football is as old as the sun-kissed beaches of Colva
and Calangute. People from this former Portuguese colony love and play the
game with a rare passion and flair, often seen in Europe and Latin America,
so much so that the sport is part of their daily life.

For the tens and thousands of Goans living in the GCC countries too, it is
no exception.

Eight outstation teams - Goa Veterans, Bahrain Goans, SBCB Bahrain, Santos
United (Kuwait), Navelim Youth Centre (Kuwait), Vanxim Divar (Dubai), ABC
Benaulim (Dubai), Aldona United (Dubai) - flew in to Qatar to join two
teams from the hosts (Goan Welfare Association Red and Blue) for the 'Goan
Mini World Cup'.

For the record, Vanxim Divar defeated Santos United in tie-breaker to emerge
champions in this one-day tournament, where the eventual finalists ended up
playing six matches of shortened durations.

It was not just the footballers who travelled to Qatar, but many of them
flew in with their family members to renew their friendships and strengthen
their social networking. The patronage from the local Goan community was
amazing as many of them vied for vantage positions right from the morning.
Jassim Ali Mohamed Ibrahim, former Qatari national player, was the special
guest for the evening. Goa Football Association General Secretary Savio
Messias was the chief guest while Marcus Pacheco, who is the goalkeepers'
coach for the Indian national team, was the guest of honour.

It was the Goan Veterans team that hogged the limelight. The Veterans team
included five former internationals - ex-India captain Bruno Coutinho, Savio
Madeira, Lawrence Gomes, Camillo Gonsalves and goalkeeper Chandrakant Naik.

While Bruno, Savio and Lawrence were the mainstays in Salgaocar Sports
Club's golden days during the late 1980s and early '90s, Camillo and
Chandrakant donned the Dempo colours, and all of them were regular members
of the Goan state as well as Indian team.

With most of them into the late 40s and some of them even into 50s, no one
expected them to reproduce their magic of the old, but the veterans proved
that age has not let them down badly as they won two games. They narrowly
missed out on a semifinal berth, losing their fourth match on penalties. The
quality of play seen in the tournament is yet another testimony to the
Goans' love for soccer as most of the players were in good nick and some of
the goals were of high class.

The Goan Welfare Association, Qatar, deserves a pat on their back for
organising such a memorable event. GWA President Simon D'Silva,
Vice-President for Sport Martin Mascarenhas, Chief Co-ordinator Jerson
Sequeira and a bunch of dedicated volunteers worked tirelessly to make the
event a grand success.

Organising an event of this magnitude wasn't easy. There were a lot of
logistics involved. Nearly 300 people from the UAE, Kuwait and Bahrain
travelled to Qatar. I'm happy that it was a huge success, said D'Silva.

It was mainly due to the hard work done by our association members and
volunteers that we've been able to do it successfully, he added.

The GWA president also expressed thanks to the Qatar Football Association,
referees, sponsors and media for their support.

FOOTBALL CASTEISM IN KUWAIT.

The new foot-ball season of Kuwait Indian Foot-ball Federation has already
started a week back. This is the 27th season of competitive soccer for
Indians at Sour Ground. The first tournament was initiated in 1979 in July
by United Goans Football Center and it was organized on League Cum Knock–Out
basis which was won by the then powerful team Goan Sporting. Since Goans are
known to be great lovers of soccer which they have inherited from their
colonial masters Portuguese, the greater role at Sour grounds soccer was
played by Goans only. Most of the teams and players are from Goa and of
Goan origin. UG is the oldest team since 1979 it is still surviving,
followed by G.O.A. Maroons which came a year later while all other teams
that took part in the inception year tournament are already gone into
extinction. In the initial stages for about 6 years these tournaments were
organized in the afternoons but later on shifted to mornings. Some of the
finest Indian players who played at Sour Grounds in the earlier stages were
the representatives of their top professional clubs, States and Nation back
in India. The early tournaments had great quality because during those days
players were of very high grade, they played beautiful soccer, they had
soccer artistry in them and were seasoned in Goa before coming to Kuwait.

In the beginning Kuwait Indian Foot-ball Federation was not in existence,
neither Indian Football Referees Association, both these bodies came at
later stages. The late J.P. D’Mello a high caliber soccer administrator and
a great Referee of international repute who worked in Kuwait for some years
was instrumental in forming IFRA and Lawry Pinto with the backing of JP and
many others were instrumental in forming KIFF. From behind the curtain as
seen by a few I have also played a very constructive role in forming KIFF
from day one when we organized our first meeting in the Church big hall and
also in the promotion of this soccer. One of the major reasons for the
popularity of this soccer was the excellent role played by the local English
Press, Konkani Monthly Magazine “Gulab”, “Goa Today” Monthly, “Goa Post”
Weekly and other Goan publications. I was very much instrumental in
highlighting this soccer activities in all the above mentioned Papers and
Magazines since the inception of our Sour Grounds soccer. Gulab Magazine
about 20 years back even issued a special edition on the history and
development of this soccer, the entire contents were written by me. Many of
the Chief Guests who attended the final matches at Sour Grounds were people
of high reputation including Indian Ambassadors and other Kuwaiti
dignitaries. The most memorable person who once came as Chief Guest with his
entourage and bodyguards for the final of Ida Ferns Memorial Tournament
organized by Sheikh Agnelo’s club was Brazilian Coach of Kuwait National
Team, Mr. Lopes. And when given a choice to select “The Man of the Match”,
he selected the then beautiful and brilliant Goan Player from Majorda – Goa,
Cajetan Godinho.

Recent events at Sour Grounds do not speak well of the soccer at Sour
Grounds. Some of the teams are involved in things which harm the interest
of soccer. The sponsors must take note of this otherwise the image of them
and their products will go down. Betting is very rampant and because of
this match fixing is also going on. Another worst attribute that I noticed
recently is the Casteism factor playing a significant role in one particular
team. This particular Team named after their villages in Goa is boasting of
their cast factor saying “ours is the only team at Sour Grounds having
higher caste status, that is of Chaddo Caste”. Chaddo or Maddo, what is
important is not to label caste factor for soccer team but to behave with
high discipline befitting high caste status. Those who create rowdism on and
off the field are disgracing their so called high caste status. When I first
came to Kuwait 3 decades back caste factor was very much rampant amongst
Goans because those so called casteist Goans of those days were socially,
educationally, morally and intellectually backward and to overcome these
deficiencies they used to take fake protection in their so called high caste
factor. Incidentally, if you carefully watch the treatment we get in Kuwait
the so called casteists should feel

[Goanet] Football Tournament 2006 held at Al Nasr - Dubai - Match update

2006-10-09 Thread joyce fernandes
We would like to forward the 8th October 2006 match
results for the Ramadan Cup 2006 Goan Inter-village
Football Tournament organized by Goan Cultural
Society, Dubai at Al Nasr Sports Club ground. This
year’s tournament is sponsored by Lipton, Eurostar
First Logistics, Echo Cargo and Shipping LLC, Jeema
Mineral Water and Mr.Ralph D’Mello.

Siolim United – 4 V/s Al Zuari F. C. Dubai –1
Siolim United defeated Al Zuari by a margin of 4-1 to
finish as group leaders in group A. Al Zuari’s
constant pressure on Siolim half gave them a chance to
draw first blood in 17th min. through Ivans. Their
joy lasted for just 2 min. as John Fernandes leveled
the score for Siolim United. Soon after the break,
Siolim United took firm control of the game and went
up 2-1 in 2nd min. through close ranger from Peter
Fernandes. Minute later, Peter was on target again,
scoring 3rd goal for Siolim United on John Seqeira’s
cross. In the dying minutes, Peter’s header earned
him his first hat-trick and sealed the victory by 4-1
margin and top slot for Siolim United, leading the
group with 8 points, followed by Varca Sports Club,
ABC Benaulim(Emirates ICA) and Al Zuari F.C. Other
team Sirsaim Sports Club could not make it for
Quarter-finals. Peter Fernandes received Man of the
Match award.

St.Lawrence Agacaim –3 V/s Doha Bank Calangute-1
In the second and last league match, fancied
St.Lawrence Agacaim outplayed young Doha Bank
Calangute team by 3 goals to 1. Since both teams did
not have any point on the score board, both the teams
took the game seriously as collecting 3 points were
very important to qualify for the next stage. But
Agacaim side had better game plan. Their pressure
tactics on Calangute defence proved fruitful as
Thomas Dias netted in first goal from close range in
10th min. Al half-time Agacaim were leading by 1
goal. In the second half, Sebyton Colaco made it 2-0
in 4th min. as Calangute keeper Denzel Fernandes
failed to collect the ball. Thomas Dias increased the
tally 3-0 in 10th min. However, Naval Fernandes
chipped in for Calangute in 16th min. to reduce the
margin. By losing the last game, Calangute missed the
chance of going to next knock-out round.

Thomas Dias of Agacaim was presented Man of the Match
award.

In group B, Eurostar First Logistics Anjuna tops the
table, UAE Exchange Abu Dhabi Chinchinim in second
spot followed by Saligao Village Foxes and St.
Lawrence Agacaim.
