Califonia Superbike School

2000-06-05 Thread David_M . _Young

Saw some of the comments on Keith Code's school and found myself a bit
surprised. I did his school last week at Watkins Glen. First day on Level One
and second in Level Two. I am not sure where you all took the class or when but
I was pretty impressed. I did his school about 10 years ago when I was a pretty
new rider and was overwhelmed with all I needed to learn but did get a lot out
of it although I too could have used more track time. This time I took it on my
own bike ('91 Ducati 851) and when I loaded up it the trailer at the end of the
second day, I noticed on the odometer that I had covered 269 miles. We had 5
sessions the first day and 4 the second and I was tired and sore. My legs and
arms were sore from muscling the bike for two days like I had been working out
in a gym instead of actually doing something fun. It was great!! Sure it would
have been nice to spend more time on the track but considering the concentration
level that is required to go fast, improve and actually absorb the lessons being
taught, I think it was about right. I have been riding a while now and am know
Colin Edwards but I was in the top three speed wise both days but again that was
only in level 1 and 2. Having said that though, if you got less than a hundred
miles in one day, there may have been some other reason. Nothing personal to
those complaining and maybe they were a little disorganized when the first got
to a new track but I don't think it is the miles that are what you are supposed
to be getting out of it but the knowledge. If you were so concerned about
getting alot of miles, you should either go faster to get more distance in the
time you were given or buy a race bike and do some endurance racing.

I will be working on the things from the lectures for the rest of the year just
from those two days and hopefully will be able to do 3 and 4 in the next year or
two. Needless to say I was very satisfied with my experience. I can not speak
of the other schools as I have not taken them but from my experience with Code
and it is just my opinion, it was well worth the money.

Just my 2 cents.
Dave

RE: California Superbike School

2000-06-05 Thread Hawkins, Kevin L, SITS

Nothing personal taken. I don't like spending $365 and standing around. If a
lesson is taught in class, it is nice to have a MAXIMUM amount of track time
to exercise the drill. This means going onto the track immediately after
leaving the classroom, not standing around. Ever taken one of Pridmore's
CLASS sessions? You are either on the track, or in the class. VERY
professionally run. Much more so than Code's CSS. As far as going faster,
was that part of the drill? Actually, with most drills being run in 3rd and
4th gears, the ZRX1100 was easily maneuvering around the ZX-600s. Mid-range
has it's advantages.

I just took delivery of a new set last week. I have not installed them yet
but in regard to quality of finish, very nice. It appears to me that once
installed that the finish that is visible is actually above the quality of

120/70 is turning up as a recommendation on many tire

Arizona Motorsports

2000-06-05 Thread Baker Terry-P27739

Garrett--This is just my $.02 worth, but please stay away from Arizona
Motorsports. It's a huge conglomerate, owned by one of the major Cadillac
dealerships, and they have 4 motorcycle dealerships in the Phoenix area.
They carry almost all major brands and are in the process of squeezing out
most of the smaller, single-brand dealerships in the area. We are facing a
near monopoly with these guys. In Mesa, where I live, they squeezed out a
mom-and-pop Yamaha dealer that had been in business for over 25 years. I
have yet to have spoken with _anyone_ here in this area that has dealt with
these guys and is happy with the service they've received. I bought my GTS
at one of their shops, and after that experience, I will never set foot in
any of their facilities.

Sorry about the ranting, but you unwittingly touched a nerve. I ordered my
heli bars direct, waited the 3-4 weeks, and paid the $. To me, it was worth
the wait. I can almost guarantee you that you will have to wait for AZ
Motorsports to get them from Heli Modified anyway.

I'll stop now. (Phew!!)

Re: Logo and Air Cleaner Question

2000-06-05 Thread Lybgts

Most of the duct work inside the air box is to hold down the total noise
under full throttle for EPA reasons. I noticed an air lag in mine. After
taking
mine apart I noticed that the air coming in is restricted by the ribbed tubes
and
the OEM filters where darken on one side. I have cut mine back to the next
rib. Another tick I learned from a Yamaha factory instructor when I had an
XS Eleven was to drill 4 separate 1/4 inch holes in a place so that each carb
would get the same amount of air. The GTS air box is big so that when you
open it up there is some air in there as a reserve until more air can be
gotten
from the outside. If it had ram air like the newer bikes the air box could
be
much smaller. You can drill these holes in the GTS air box on the bottom
and still have it filtered. This gives you a 1 inch total opening as if you
instaled
another intake port. It has made some difference and I believe that in time
I
may increase the holes a tad bit and cut back on the tubes that come in from
the outside. These tubes are located where I don't think they are the most
effective. So take a look at yours and if it doesn't work these holes could
be
plugged and the tubes replaced with about any thing.
The jet kit and Tormignomi pipes on my Duck you have to leave off the
top part of the air box. When you open it the noise is like having a 4 barrel
Holly double pumper in your face. But you do get the job done. Of course all
the electronic stuff that is on the GTS is something I don't want to up set
till
time and more experimentation occurs. As with the crank vent system the
next I go into mine if there is a layer of oil in there it may show that
these holes
have allowed not enough vacuum to draw the vapors and oil drops on to the
inside of the airbox. For which some relocating and size adjustments would
have to be figured in. I wouldn't feel that too much larger that 1/4 is
needed.
Considering that 2 carbs are drawing air via those tubes which are only
about 1 inch in diameter. Yamaha calculations figured that this was enough
but they are trade offs that they had to consider. That's my .021/2.

RE: bar snake

2000-06-05 Thread Henry

The stock handle bars off my 94 are NOT solid! They are hollow from the
outside end up to just slightly over 2 1/8" (about 52 mm) from the end that
goes into the crown. Maybe they should be solid to damp some vibration, but
this pair isn't.

Before everyone goes tearing off their bars getting the "bar snake"
 for
the vibes, ya might think about the fact that our bars are solid, not
hollow, so about the only way you could use the snake would be to wrap
 it
around your wrist! HEY!!.. Maybe you could get it magnetized then it
 it
would be like one of those cure all bracelets sold by the
 guys that sell
snake oil!! HH...bar snake...snake oilI wonder?

Not the same price, 57s are $90 the 010s are $110. 'Till I see definitive
proof that the 010s are better/longer lasting I'll stick with what I know
works.

The BT-57 has been replace by the BT-010. A new and better tire for the

Cording showing for sure and 6,292 miles is all I got out of

Most all the miles were non-benign to boot :-)) Ahh it

Bottom line I liked this tire so much a new one's on the way
  as we speak.

One more thing, did my first wheely this weekend on the

RE: heli bars, numb fingers, and tire profile

2000-06-05 Thread Henry

I'd say better looking. They're not olive green. I agree with Gil. They
get the pressure off your back/ shoulders. But I don't know that they
effect any vibrations that might pass their way. Not a problem that I have
to deal with, anyway.

I have heli bars and they are very good. The purpose is to raise
 the bars a
bit for an easier seating position. I was not aware that they were
supposed to reduce buzz, but in fact I don't have any buzz in the
 grips so
maybe they do. You can't see much of them because they're covered by the
grips etc., so there is no issue about their appearance, as far as I'm
 concerned.

If you're in the US of A, it shouldn't cost more than $40-45. If you need

RE: Logo and Air Cleaner Question

2000-06-05 Thread Henry

Considering that 2 carbs are drawing air via those tubes which are only
about 1 inch in diameter. Yamaha calculations figured that this
 was enough

Your GTS has CARBS?

Gee, mine doesn'tmine has fuel injection.

I saw some "holes" in a catalog--they hold a chunk of
foam to keep the chunks out of the airbox--I think

 be
much smaller. You can drill these holes in the GTS
 air box on the bottom
and still have it filtered. This gives you a 1 inch
 total opening as if you
 instaled
another intake port. It has made some difference

 I
may increase the holes a tad bit and cut back on the
 tubes that come in from
the outside. These tubes are located where I don't

I think the tubes are located where the air is most
still and not too hot--makes it easier on the
injection to do a good job

The jet kit and Tormignomi pipes on my Duck you
 have to leave off the
top part of the air box. When you open it the noise
is like having a 4 barrel
Holly double pumper in your face. But you do get
 the job done.

Big holes are a famous FJ tuning trick to get big jets
and loud pipes to work. I always think I want more
power but really have plenty. Looking for a good air
filter system that does not rely on replacement. I
like two sets of foam or gauze to rotate, but that's
just me...

  As with the
 crank vent system the
next I go into mine if there is a layer of oil in
 there it may show that
 these holes
have allowed not enough vacuum to draw the vapors
and oil drops on to the
 inside of the airbox.
snip

Good point--one I had failed to consider...

Yamaha calculations
 figured that this was enough
but they are trade offs that they had to consider.
 That's my .021/2.

a local tire dealer the price is the same with a dollar or two.
