Ann,

The newer addition is a lot better. In my class I just refer to certain
pages in the book. My class starts in 1840 and ends at 1970. Those sections
are good in the book for an overview. I just remembered that I bought the
book used on Amazon not eBay. My book was used and was in perfect
condition. When I was a student, I used my book for three costume history
classes. So I got my money out of it.

I haven't seen the latest edition--I have the last one. It is just that,
 a
very general survey. I'm not sure, Bjarne, whether you would find it

Dear h-costumers,

As I went about my Christmas shopping with my lists from my college age
children who all want cds and dvds for gifts now, I was at Borders
Bookstore and
(having printed a few cupons from the internet from their site) I was
ablel to

get 25% savings on a book and a cd. Browsing about the boxed dvd sets my
eyes happend upon Elizabeth R with Glenda Jackson -- the very one I
have been
longing for for ages!! I saw it years ago when it first came out, but
with
the price of either vhs or dvd, I couldn't afford my dream.I have been
doing

Reniassance faires for 15 years now and this was the gold standard for
costuming. I especially liked the headgear. However, , this time I had a
cupon for

40% off a boxed dvd set @ $70.00!! Yes, indeed, I bought it and told my
husband Thank you for my Christmas present!

I just had to spill it to folks I know would understand.

Gentles all,
I visited the local equivalent of a US thrift Shop two Friday's back, and

The local Sewing Machine Engineer is servicing them for me now. Both the

These will be kept for use by novice re-enactors who wish to join either our

Nothing is firm on this yet.

However...

This could be an opportunity to build props based on discredited

I'm home sick today so I've got nothing to do BUT look up stuff. ;-)

Catalog No. 64, which is the partial sleeve that's on the back cover,
is checks of madder-dyed and undyed wool, with two darker threads
outlining the checks. There are 8 warp threads to 6 weft threads per
check. It's dated 14Q2.

There are other patterns on both twills and tabbies, both stripes and
checks. Some of the stripes are bands of silk weft on wool warp.

I'm guessing that stripes or plaids were just not
what artists were looking to paint.
At least this group won't assume that any person in
plaids/crossed stripes/etc. is Scottish. :)

Stripes +/or plaids probably have specific meanings in painterly contexts,
ones that we no longer know. *sighs*

Seems a little low for pregnancy.

It's hard to say.

The shaping is incredibly common in other portraits of the same time.

Hip padding was around at the time - so it could be that, continued over the
belly.

But then again, it is perfectly possible that it's the painting just isn't
very well drawn.

It's also quite likely that she would be pregnant (thank the lord I'm alive
now!!).

It's also possible that she's trying to look as though she were pregnant -
it's been fashionable more than once or twice.

Thank you! That's the site I was thinking of. I'm planning to make this:

I have plenty of evidence of gowns from this era with shoulder straps, with
a much lower incidence of gowns that look strapless, but this one definitely
falls into the strapless camp. If only all my lovely back-view shots

I don't think she is, unless every other woman of this period who wears her

Re: [h-cost] construction ?

2006-12-12 Thread Becky Rautine
It looks similar to the lacing of a Venetian costume of earlier period. The
ribbon would have been silk during this period. SO... I think it looks like
a wide silk ribbon has been woven through some kind of small loop, then
folded back over it to the other side. The width of the ribbon seems to be
wide at the turn then narrow where it comes to the side, then wider back
across. Just a guess but it looks like that to me. Very similar to how silk
roses are folded.

Sincerely,
Rebecca Rautine

2006-12-12 Thread Dawn

Cin wrote:

Another small query, what is the visible red one can see throught
the space beneath the left arm? This was originally why I thought I
was seeing this Cape.

My guess, and I'm no expert, the red with all the pleating is the
back of the skirt seen in shadow, while the white/gray triangle above
the red is the interior of an open robe. When I drape my open robe
over the drum I get a bit of squnch back there that looks like pooling
water instead of rayed pleats. Admittedly, I'm looking at a 6x9 color
photo, not the real portrait.

I disagree, I don't think there is an open robe over the gown. What I
see in QEWU and the online images is a white gown with an open red
overgown. (Pardon me if my terms are wrong).

If you look at the bottom of the hanging sleeve on the viewer's left you
can see the red which is also visible under the left arm, this is what's
on the back of the sleeve. The same red is visible on the right of the
bodice, just behind the pearls, and it's visible as a red overskirt in
the space under her arms.

Or maybe I should say she is wearing a red gown with an elaborate white
stomacher and petticoat which match her sleeves and the lining of her
oversleeves. If you look at the copies of the Ditchley portrait which
are on the following pages (44-47) in QEWU you can see it even better.

The grey background under her arms looks like the same grey that is used
above her head, but then my image sources may not be color-tuned
correctly. The red is very clear to me though.

Sorry, I can't help you with the set of the sleeves.
