Sylrog, I too studied with Prof. Russell, just a very few years before he passed away. I love his book and use it as an additional reference in my costume history class. I use the book chosen by my department as our primary book, but the Russell text does so much more to make the connections between what people wore and why they wore it. Gentles all, I visited the local equivalent of a US thrift Shop two Friday's back, and came away with 2 in-table-mounted Singer Stylist Model 457's for £10GB each, and a clean and well-cared-for Singer Model 66K [ circa 1906-1920] hand-cranked, table-top machine, [the one with the lovely Lotus decals] - thrown in, for free. The local Sewing Machine Engineer is servicing them for me now. Both the Stylists came with original User manuals, and a full complement of accessories - various types of feet, spare bobbins, spare needles, original tools and oil bottles. These will be kept for use by novice re-enactors who wish to join either our established Companie of the Duke's Leopards, or the SCA-group we are trying to start in our little Isle - to make their own garb and equipment, and/ or tents. Thank you! That's the site I was thinking of. I'm planning to make this: http://www.nationalgalleries.org/collections/artist_search.php?objectId=4764 and am flirting with the idea of a strapless design. I have plenty of evidence of gowns from this era with shoulder straps, with a much lower incidence of gowns that look strapless, but this one definitely falls into the strapless camp. If only all my lovely back-view shots weren't of the strapped version (Or, maybe the strapless versions look strapped from behind! Hrm.) -E Ooo! lots of pleating! Re: [h-cost] Gack! Is she pregnant or is she not? Need your opinions!
Okay, maybe I am not understanding. Yes, the bumper pads all the way around don't seem unusual. i.e. this is a French Farthingale - no rigid frame, but like the infamous characature of the women about masks and farthingales. Maybe I am not understanding the comments, (not just Nicole's) but this one appears like she is protruding extremely in the front but not at the hipswho knows what's going on with her backside.. Am I missing what you are saying? Sg From: N Kipar [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: Historical Costume [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Historical Costume [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [h-cost] Gack! Date: Tue, 12 Dec 2006 23:19:08 + (GMT) I don't think she is, unless every other woman of this period who wears her fashionable clothes in the same way, is pregnant on portraits. I have many examples amongst my files that look just like this one. Re: [h-cost] question about a book
Susan, Kudos for you! WOW! What work! I am trying to remember if you are the person I am thinking of... did you used to work at a small museum in North Carolina? I remember a lady on the list that used to be there and told me about the wagon train trails. I am doing some research into the textile mills in SC in the next county. This person was just across the state line. Was that you? Re: [h-cost] construction ?
It looks similar to the lacing of a Venetian costume of earlier period. The ribbon would have been silk during this period. SO... I think it looks like a wide silk ribbon has been woven through some kind of small loop, then folded back over it to the other side. The width of the ribbon seems to be wide at the turn then narrow where it comes to the side, then wider back across. Just a guess but it looks like that to me. Very similar to how silk roses are folded. Sincerely, Rebecca Rautine From: Susan B. Re: [h-cost] 0f belts and hanging sleeves
Cin wrote: Another small query, what is the visible red one can see throught the space beneath the left arm? This was originally why I thought I was seeing this Cape. My guess, and I'm no expert, the red with all the pleating is the back of the skirt seen in shadow, while the white/gray triangle above the red is the interior of an open robe. When I drape my open robe over the drum I get a bit of squnch back there that looks like pooling water instead of rayed pleats. Admittedly, I'm looking at a 6x9 color photo, not the real portrait. I disagree, I don't think there is an open robe over the gown. What I see in QEWU and the online images is a white gown with an open red overgown. (Pardon me if my terms are wrong). If you look at the bottom of the hanging sleeve on the viewer's left you can see the red which is also visible under the left arm, this is what's on the back of the sleeve. The same red is visible on the right of the bodice, just behind the pearls, and it's visible as a red overskirt in the space under her arms. Or maybe I should say she is wearing a red gown with an elaborate white stomacher and petticoat which match her sleeves and the lining of her oversleeves. If you look at the copies of the Ditchley portrait which are on the following pages (44-47) in QEWU you can see it even better. The grey background under her arms looks like the same grey that is used above her head, but then my image sources may not be color-tuned correctly. The red is very clear to me though. Sorry, I can't help you with the set of the sleeves. Dawn ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
Re: [h-cost] Gack! Is she pregnant or is she not? Need your opinions!
Do you think she is pregnant? Seems a little low for pregnancy. I'd say she wasn't. Most of the images of these dresses show women in the same shape as this one, and I don't believe every one of them was painted during pregnancy. BTW, I made one of these once. In mine I looked pretty much like she does in hers, and I wasn't the least bit pregnant at the time. ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
