I know from attending a Chickahominy Powwow last year they stated that it is
not a favorable word.

[h-cost] OT RE: one of a kind wedding dress

2011-06-18 Thread otsisto
It means woman in the Wappanoag language, specifically it alludes to a
matron or woman that was married and had children.
It really depends in the context it which it is used which makes it
derogatory or not. Hollywood movies didn't help.

-Original Message-
I was surprised by this because I had never heard it used in such a way. I
had
always heard it used to mean woman or wife. Granted, it is a condescending
racist term but certainly not an obscene or sexual one. So I looked at wiki
to
see what it said. It does mention the vagina issue but said it didn't arise
until the 1970s where there are earlier usages of the word which seemed to
mean
woman.

Sadly, this is an Algonquin (specifically Wappanoag) word that means matron,
that a young Iroquoian woman decided was an English bastardization of an
Iroquois word that mean vagina.

[h-cost] No-Waste Cutting, 1950s Style

2011-06-18 Thread Lavolta Press
I recently bought a used book titled Sewing Magic, by Mary Brooks
Picken, with the copyright dates of 1950, 1951, and 1952. This book
contains 159 patterns for women's clothes, 1 for men (work aprons), 27
infants and children (mostly female), 11 for home dec, and 26 for
"gifts," including a few men's garments. The women's patterns include
skirts, blouses, dresses, boleros, jackets, coats, stoles, capes,
scarves, lingerie, accessories, and aprons. All the patterns are simple,
but stylish.Almost all of them have no or minimal waste. Diagrams with
measurements show how to draw the patterns directly on the fabric. A
perfect book for beginning (and more advanced) retro sewers!
