Re: [h-cost] Off Topic: Removing ink from cotton blend
You are right about the breathing part, totally forgot we were not in the 4seventies anymore. How ever the application of the alcohol is more effective when a spray than just poured on. . Pump?spray bottle is helpful. So is vodka for those folks who are wheat intolerant and vodka leave behind no after residue ore oder.( it is also used as a spot cleaner/deoderizer/antibactutial on costumes, suits and uniforms where regular drycleaning is needed but not an option. -Original Message- Date: Wednesday, May 16, 2012 1:07:14 am To: 'Historical Costume' h-cost...@indra.com From: Margaret Geiss-Mooney m...@textileconservator.com Subject: Re: [h-cost] Off Topic: Removing ink from cotton blend Good evening, H-Costume'lers - The process for blotting is well described below. Re: [h-cost] Off Topic: Removing ink from cotton blend
The problem iwirh simmering things with ink in something that will dilute the stain is that if you are lucky(?) it merely Tues into a dye that now permeates the entire garment, rarely evenly at that, which i believe is how the problem got to be so bad in the first place. If i am not mistaken, the majority of the initial damage happened in the washer with a water soluble pen . this did jog my memory though. about 15 years ago i had a picked of Guatemala hand woven fabric, cotton (white) and silver thread brocade. Someone hd spilled cherry nyquil on it. It being already turned i figured i could not make it worse so i purchased a carbon dye magnet. This looked like a regular sized what wwashcloth which supposedly sucks the free roaming dyes out of your laundry during a regular wash cycle preventing just such a disaster like the ink pen debacle or a red sock hinting a load of sports uniforms pink. it took 24 hrs but after wetting the stain and leaving it to blot over and over again with the dye magnet, the cherry red dye faded to a light shadow of pink whereas i then threw it in the wash on delicate with the dye magnet and the whole thing game out whiter than it had been before the accident. at the time i believe the product was priced between 4 and 5 $ and was supposedly good for 30 lads of laundry. it might be worth a try if you are running out of ideas and patience. -Original Message- Date: Wednesday, May 16, 2012 2:13:58 am To: 'Historical Costume' h-cost...@indra.com From: Sharon Collier sha...@collierfam.com Subject: Re: [h-cost] Off Topic: Removing ink from cotton blend What if you got a couple of gallons of alcohol and soaked the clothes in it? [h-cost] Exhibition: Fashion and Fencing in Renaissance Europe
A new exhibition opens tomorrow in London at The Wallace Collection: The Noble Art of the Sword: Fashion and Fencing in Renaissance Europe http://www.wallacecollection.org/collections/exhibition/93 It runs from Thursday 17th May, 2012 to Sunday 16th September, 2012. The web page has a detailed description of the goodies on display and their context, and it might be worth looking out for coverage in the media soon. Also, I've heard that one of the portraits will be The Laughing Cavalier (1624) by Frans Hals. If you go to http://wallacelive.wallacecollection.org:8080/eMuseumPlus?service=ExternalInterfacemodule=collectionobjectId=64959 there is a a description and a photo, and if you click on the photo a separate window opens, showing an enlargement in which you can see in detail his lace, and his silk costume with all its symbols of love. If anyone happens to be in London and visits this exhibition, perhaps they'd tell us more about it? My husband says the same thing! He says that they cancel the good stuff because it is too much work to keep restocking. :) Teena From: Patricia Dunham chim...@ravensgard.org To: Historical Costume h-cost...@indra.com Sent: Wednesday, May 16, 2012 5:58 PM Subject: Re: [h-cost] Gr ... ! wow does that sound familiar... the secret computer report on what MY household buys, so they can quit carrying exactly those items! oh, and my DH's theory that the MOST POPULAR items are highly likely to get dropped, because it's so much bother re-stocking the popular stuff all the time... customers keep buying and emptying the shelves, so we have to work harder to keep these items in stock -- nah, let's drop 'em save ourselves the work and when some national corp. giant buys out your local chain and replaces LOCAL products with house-brand stuff from wherever they are home-based. chimene (where Kroger from the MidWest bought Fred Meyer of Oregon and wrought all sorts of havoc; and where local WINCO chain is expanding into CA and wreaking all sorts of havoc with their stock as they lower and lower the common denominator, dropping NW local products for stuff that they can get in greater volume, because of the CA store explosion) On May 16, 2012, at 4:52 AM, annbw...@aol.com wrote: And superfine sugar, and tarragon vinegar, and . . . . I think you've nailed it there, they stock more and more of what is cheaper to source. Meanwhile, the specialty items like powdered starch don't move as fast. If people can get it from an internet source, why bother taking up shelf space? -Carol ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
Re: [h-cost] Narrow linen for a shift
On May 16, 2012, at 3:07 PM, Martha Kelly wrote: The narrow linen of original shifts has an amazingly tiny and perfect selvage - less than 1/8. When the seams are run by hand just inside that selvage, it's a thing of beauty and a joy forever. It's impossible to reproduce exactly unless someone these days is weaving such linen. If they exist, I want to know about them! Martha Yes, we're so used to thick selvedges these days. Modern power looms cut each thread as it is woven, sometimes tucked in for a smooth (but thick) selvedge and sometimes a fuzzy/fringey selvedge. Hand-woven fabrics just have the thread going back and forth, so there is no thick, unusable part of the fabric. And it won't shrink more than the rest of the fabric, either! I agree that the shift is much better off with felled seams. Cut off the bad selvedge and then it won't matter that the fabric was woven at 60 and split to 30. And definitely use linen instead of cotton. Linen bedsheets are great in any temperature, too. -Carol ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
