Re: [h-cost] Question re a future family heirloom (hopefully)
Lynlee, It sounds lovely. I know when I made a christening gown for my daughter to go with my husband's faith (Catholic-I'm not), it had to be primarily white, I had very very subtle undertones of lavender in the underskirts and embroidery. From what little I recall of Maori patterns, aren't they primarily red/black/white? Ask the clergy if you can use the colors in the smocking/embroidery threads, or perhaps more muted ones to evoke that family heritage. Or possibly shadow applique? Having just returned from Norwescon and finishing that masquerade, I'll be working several new things: 1-new 14th Cen. garments for Nayeli as at almost 2 she's out-grown everything from last year 2-rewriting my paper on the use of mi-parti in the Romance of Alexander 3-obtaining the rest of the patterns to make an 1870's Victorian ensemble with a fantail skirt (I've got some lovely plaid taffeta to play with) 4-starting the research portion to work on documentation for the next competition I plan to enter for SCA - a full set of 1340's garments. 5- coordinating with Carmen about a class on Cavalier clothing to be hosted in the Puget Sound area (so I can work on one of those too) Everything else on my immediate docket is not-quite-historical, making play food/toys for Nayeli's birthday at the end of this month or mending. Re: [h-cost] Fabrics Medieval vs Modern
What I am looking for is help with acquiring appropriate swatches of fabric and fibers that approximate a medieval fabric, but at a more conventionally budgetable cost. Having even a piece that is say 2 x 3 to touch and see the weave is easier to learn from than a photo from a book, plus we do see changes in how a fabric is labeled, which can confuse someone who is not as knowledgeable about textiles. Ideally, I'd like to be able to label the swatch with the actual fiber content and weave type (because I can't tell the difference between weaves very well) and suggestions of what that weight of fabric would most probably be used for in period. If I can flesh out good images of actual medieval fabrics with swatches and information on textile names or terms, that would be great. Cilean, do you have a handout for your class? Could I reimburse and credit you for a copy to put in my workbook? I generally only make it down to California twice a year or so, and not for SCA events-rather for Costume College and sf conventions. [h-cost] Help requested -Medieval Type Fabric Swatch book creation
*De-Lurking for a bit, yes it's been a long time since I posted here* I'm looking for help with creating a fabric swatch book geared to help me understand what modern fabrics would be closer in look or feel to recreating historical garments, especially in the medieval period, although not exclusively. Personally I do most of my costuming in the 14th century, but am also asked to help with everything from early Norse or Rus to Tudor and Elizabethan clothing, and am starting to play with Regency and Victorian outfits. I have a lot of books, but find it personally challenging to translate the written word and pictures into how the fabric looks and feels in my hand for myself, much less for other people. Since I'm at a point now where I'm wanting to take the time to hand-sew my ensembles, and even considering hand embroidered badge motifs, I'd like to be a bit more correct on the weights and weaves I'm using for the projects. Especially since I've got a few pieces of wools that are lovely, but I don't know if they are the right weight or style for what I want to do. For example, picking out what to do with 6 yards of a lovely ultramarine blue angora blend wool that feels like velvety plush on one side and the other side looks like what I think is a twill (very fine diagonal lines), the 5 yards of a muted blue-green that is lightweight, mostly smooth feeling, with tightly woven threads or the 5 1/2 yards of heavier dark purple (grape) wool that is more like the heavier coat wool. I'm willing to pay for swatches and postage-please contact me off-list at celedraug AT gmail DOT com. You can buy all the same Hawaii-theme souvenirs, seat covers, clothes, jewelry, etc. but it is cheaper than elsewhere. Worth it to do one-stop souvenir shopping then you can basically forget shopping the rest of the trip. Watch your purse, though. Lots of petty theft. Also the fabric stores there sell Hawaiian print fabric if that is interesting to you. They also have shops dedicated to selling mumus. Check the Yellow Pages when you get there if you can't find out any other way. There used to be a shop in Ala Moana mall that sold Hawaiian quilting themed items; they were nice to look at. There should be Hawaiian style quilts on exhibit someplace. Sorry I can't be more specific; it was eight years ago that I spent a few months there and my memory is hazy, plus a lot may have changed. Have fun! P.S. The number 8 bus runs up and down the main drag of Waikiki pretty frequently and it is often easier to take the bus in this area as parking is terrible. However if you are debating renting a car it is worth a day to circumnavigate the island (1/4 tank of gas in an economy car). The North Shore is very pretty and the waves should still be quite high this time of year. [h-cost] Assistance with late Victorian gown patterns please?
Greetings folks! It seems my costuming inspiration has come back with a vengeance. After much lurking and dithering, I'm going to be making two Victorian (or early Edwardian?) outfits in preparation for CostumeCon 26, but need a little help with details. Ageless Patterns for inspirations and then Truly Victorian and Laughing Moon were posited as good starting patterns for me (I don't think the person recommending realized I owned/had access to several of Fran's books). I've been going through my book and the local library's selection, as well as several online sites trying to see what general silhouettes appeal most to me, and it looks like from about 1887 to 1899, and a couple of pieces from 1905 are the ones I'll be trying to focus on, with more of the walking/day type skirts, not the evening gowns. I'm not experienced at drafting up yet, so this will be a good learning experience, no matter what outfits I choose. Plus of course trying to get a decent idea of color combinations and trim/decorative styles for that time period. My sister-in-law will be letting me rifle through her Truly Victorian and Laughing Moon undergarment and basic skirt/bodice patterns, which will help me see better as my computer doesn't show them well. The three primary types of silhouettes I seem to come up with are as follows, with questions at the end. A: http://www.agelesspatterns.com/images/1008.GIF B: http://www.agelesspatterns.com/images/1488.GIF C: http://www.vintagevictorian.com/images/Del_3_94d.jpg A: 1887 Braided Cloth Gown w/Bell Skirt: This gown was made of bluet-blue cloth with a vest of dark blue velvet and braiding in dark blue soutache. The waist is a belted blouse, cut low on the velvet vest, with the fronts connected by a clasp. Design for soutache braid included. B: 1899 Gown Trimmed w/Persian Lamb: The pattern for this terra cotta colored cloth gown trimmed with embroidery and Persian lamb consists of bodice, outer skirt, underskirt and pattern for embroidery. C: I like this piece as well, it looks very similar to 5 of the ones in the 1890's Dover book I've got checked out, or one that's pictured in R. Turner Wilcox's The Mode in Costume out of peacock green with black accents and a violet satin waist and belt. Query 1: On dress A, isn't a Bell Skirt more 1890's? I like the thought of playing with the detailing like this, but am confused at what the back would look like. Is anyone familiar with this particular pattern who can clear it up for me? Also, what is meant by a velvet vest under the waist? Is that simply a sleeved garment under the blouse, or something else? Query 2: Where could I get an idea of what types of trimmings were used so that I can better visualize them? I do okay with only written descriptions, but examples I can see work much better. I have some long lengths of white gimp, a colored fringe and a white gimp/netted tassel combination that I think would look nice on a hem or edging, but that's without any knowledge, and I'd rather have something that doesn't look like an inspired costume. Query 3: Fabrics/colors. I've got a tropical weight bright jade/peacock green wool (almost 20 yards, it was at a thrift store), lots of lightweight black wool (off cuts from a garment store averaging about 2 yards each), 10 yards of an icy greyed lavender faux shot silk, 10 yards of a black orchid grosgrain type fabric and 10 yards of a medium rose linen weave, plus lots of white, black, green and purple bits of velvets, satins, laces and wools that I could pull out for accents. They are all plain fabrics, as is most of my hoard, but I tend to prefer to err that way, than with patterns. Would any of these work? Sorry for the rambling, I stayed up a bit too late reading and playing with images for this last night and am paying for it at work today. Thank you for your time! [h-cost] Query about Mod and the mid-1960's
Greetings everyone! I'm popping out of lurkdom after Worldcon and Loscon to ask for help while setting up another group set of costumes for next year's Friday Night Fun. Wonder of wonders, they are pulling me out of medieval era clothing/costume and into making more early-to-mid 20th century stuff. The theme is Mod as in the mid 1960's. My tighter focus, at least in theory, is going to be closer to the items worn by Diana Riggs in the Avengers, or one of the other similar designers, but I am also finding interesting comments about a couple of other designers. I'll share a few of the ones I don't want for myself with some of the other folks doing the theme who haven't chosen yet as well. So my request is help in finding photos of garments made by John Bates (Jean Varon), Andre Courneges, or Paco Rabanne. I'll be trying to determine a fiber which I can easily wear, as most of the polyester I remember from that time (since I was well, very young then) makes me break out in serious cases of the itchies now. My husband's first vote is for the immediately identifiable first season Emma Peel leather catsuit, but I want to see a few other ideas before I make up my mind. Re: [h-cost] Book inventory software question
Lynn, I have to agree on the vote for LibraryThing.com. I'd been hearing about it from several friends and after the expensive re-purchasing of 2 research books the weekend before the H-Cost discussion, went in and took the plunge to actually do something with my books. I paid for a lifetime membership, and am almost 3/4 of the way done inputting my books, and working on adding the tags to cross-reference them. You can use the ISBN number, the title or the author's name to input the items, which can save a lot of time. You can also look at other people's opinions on the books by searching under the tags you might use to identify the book, looking for reviews, or checking out profiles of people who have similar books in common. I can also add notes on the book itself, say if it is one of my sf/f books-if it is signed by the author/artist. Eventually, say after this summer season is over, I hope to look up some of the books on my ILL list to see who I know might own one, to ask for a review before using up that slot or paying the money. That way I can do the research on the other regional areas I need for my Journeyman Guild projects.
