Re: [h-cost] pricing muslin

2006-05-18 Thread Katy Bishop

I get my muslins wholesale from New England Quilt Supply. They carry
90 cotton 200 count sheeting ($3-4 a yard?), and I am sure they carry
wide muslins but I've never ordered wide muslin from them (their
website is under construction so particular fabrics are not listed).
I get my 45 wide muslin (Springmaid) there for $1.55 a yard with
posatge. Perhaps there is a more local-to-you wholesale quilting
supplier.

At that width $69 seems ok.

I did a google search for wholesale muslin and came up with this:

You shouldn't have to pay more than about a buck and a half per yard, even
at retail. In my opinion, $69 for 15 yards is a ripoff...

That is more than $4 a yard, and doesn't sound like a good deal to me,
unless it is the extra wide kind (60 or 90). I think you should be able to
find
45 for $2 a yard or so.:

Just checked--Joann on-line has both bleached and unbleached, 44-45 wide,
50 yard bolts for $98.99:

What is the theatrical use you envision for this muslin?
Most muslin for general theater use can be found for about $1 a yard if you
shop around. If you are needing it for flats(scene) of unusual
width(72/109), the price you mention may not be too bad. For misc. costume
use, you can find it for a much cheaper price!!

Lightweight and transparent sounds like actual muslin to me rather than
calico which is what is usually called muslin in the US. That may mean the
price is better than it appears;)

And then there is this muslin for use in the theatre:
http://setshop.com/product_info.php?products_id=130

And then I found this:
http://www.fishmansfabrics.com/mus_ltwgt.htm
Contents:70% polyester,30% cotton
Description: lightweight,semi-sheer

So it may be helpful for a bit more description in terms of what the fabric
is for.

I assume $69 is US $69?

If so, it's a ripoff. I've usually seen muslin go for $2.50-$3.50 around here
(SE Pennsylvania) at the most. $69 for 15 yards is about $4.60.

Where are you? If you are in the New York/ New Jersey area you can get
muslin for about .99 - 2.00 a yard at Joannes, depending on the width. Less
if you have a coupon. Unless you are looking for a really wide width that
sounds like a LOT of money.

If it's 108, that makes more sense, since you're getting so much more than,
say, the muslin at my local Jo-Ann's, which averages 45 wide.

It's for draping the stage. Ceiling to floor and in layers. Should also be
sheer, as we'll be projecting light through it in addition to onto it.
Theatrical sheers at that width are $89.99 according to one website passed
along, so maybe it's not so bad a price for the width.

We'll need a LOT so it probably needs to be the wider variety, or we'll be
sewing 100's of yards together.
