I ordered mine a few days after it was published ( when I found out about it)
from Michael Shemansky for $95USD.

 Greetings to all,

I have a different question about this book. To those of you in
 the US
who got it when it first became available: how much did you pay
 for it,
and when was that? I'm trying to establish the original price
 of this
book to see how much it's gone up and how fast.

The book itself says it's 58 euros, which translates (at today's
 rate)
to $75, but I doubt anyone in the US got it for that once
 shipping was
taken into account, and I know that the US vendors that
 carry/ied it
upped the price for the same reason.

 Please reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 Thanks!

RE: [h-cost] Questions re: Moda a Firenze

2006-12-27 Thread 00217146

I would add to this: a lot of the sources are Italian, also, so if you want to
track down the primary source for any of the information, it's going to be
difficult. (On the other hand, the *primary* source would be in Italian anyway,
so maybe it's great that the authors have told us where to look)

The only bad things that I can think of is thet the intro by the authors
is in Italian. Plus-- there is no index. Makes it difficult to reference.

Other than that it a WONDERFUL book.

Quoting A. Thurman [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

I've lucked into some Christmas gift money and am looking to
(finally!) purchase this book. However, given the hefty price tag, I'd
like to get some reviews (regrettably, the local textile library
doesn't have a copy). Some of my questions:

What are its strengths? Weaknesses?

Are the writers credible? Is the book well researched? What is the
quality/quantity of photographs? Any construction detail?

Thanks in advance!

If you want to do Italian Ren, then you **NEED** this book. However,
the book is out of print -- I've heard rumors that it *may* be
reprinted. The only place that I know of right now that has it for
sale is Poison Pen Press, and last time I checked, they wanted 190.00
for it. Evidently, I got one of the last copies that Michael
Shramansky had!

http://www.poisonpenpress.com/costume.html
you'll have to scroll for it.

There are more gorgeous paintings in this book that I had *never* seen
anywhere else before. It's more like QEWU than PoF -- there aren't
any patterns, but ...

Construction details? In the wardrobe inventories, amounts of fabric
are given. Close ups of paintings of various details (sleeves,
partlets, etc) are provided and discussed. The text is parallel
Italian/English.

Wonderful book.

I second Susan's recommendation of the book, although I've yet to finish
reading my copy. The info is very detailed, including history of the family,
and far more images than I've seen elsewhere. They even include an image of an
extant smock I'd not seen anywhere else done in lovely embroidery.

I do believe that Lacis in Berkeley, CA has some copies on their online store
(www.lacis.com).
