Chris,

This is a late reply. Hope you got what you hoped for!

I knit socks all the time but never do block them. My feet do that
well enough :) I've never had blockers and don't understand the need
for them. Perhaps you can enlighten me on that point.

Happy feet in handknits!

Re: [h-cost] What costume-related gifts did you get?

My husband has pre-ordered me a set of books -
*Textiles: Critical and Primary Sources* -
*Edited by Catherine Harper
http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/search/advanced?searchAuthor=Catherine+Harper*

Description -

Textiles: Critical and Primary Sources is a major multi-volume reference
work that draws together 80 seminal texts on textiles. Textile culture
stretches geographic, historical, methodological and disciplinary
boundaries, and defies chronological ordering. The contents are
therefore gathered into four thematic collections dealing with history
and curation; production and sustainability; science and technology; and
identity, each supported by an introductory editorial essay that serves
to critique and supplement each textual collection and theme. Textiles:
Critical and Primary Sources is a key scholarly resource for any
researchers involved in the study of textiles, as well as associated
subjects, including studies in dress, costume and fashion; feminism and
gender; art, design and cultural history; and sociology and anthropology.

While not specifically historic dress, and more study and work related,
for me. It is very sexy. :)

I've been buying myself historic dress books as they become available.
The library has swelled. 7 new book cases for the new house. I sill
don't know if that is enough. We will see when we finish unpacking.

Cheers

Well, I got Medieval Clothing Textiles #7 for my birthday on Dec 4... don't
know if that counts, 8-)

But this morning there were 2 books about SCA-period cooking recipes, lots of
other books, a lovely set of long scarves that Santa found at the flea
market, but not really anything costume-related. Well, not SCA-period costume,
did get a Mucha calendar with a few images that are actually new-to-us. (We do
SO miss the Medieval Women calendar series!)

The Queen's Servants sounds interesting, as my husband has an interest in HVII
period, and I am a Ricardian. I look forward to other tales-o'-loot!

If anyone is interested in a book review on The Queen's Servants, I've got one
here on my creative blog
http://kimikosews.livejournal.com/66429.html

Btw, there is also The King's Servants for men's clothing of the early Henry
VIII period that had been released earlier.
The typical clothes worn by middling men during the decades between the
battles of Bosworth (1485) and Flodden (1513) are described and reconstructed
in this beautifully illustrated book.

Looks like some of you racked up on the gifts. My future daughter-in-law
gave me a box of antique lace that she had purchased at an estate sale. In
the box was a fine lace bertha in perfect condition, very delicate lace
collar, and some collars and cuffs that are tacked to tissue paper. We are
trying to figure out why they are attached to the tissue paper in a manner
of a personal display. I wonder if it is like the embroidery portfolios at
the Valentine Museum. Future brides would present their future MIL with a
portfolio of embroidery stitches to prove that the bride was worthy of the
groom.

The best gift was to and from my 9 y.o. granddaughter. I always wanted a
daughter to teach her to sew. No such luck with my daughter Katie. Last
summer on vacation I was embroidering and my granddaughter wanted to learn
how to do it. So I taught her some basics and she fell in love with
embroidery. She also fell in love my DMC floss notebook that holds the
floss. She asked for Christmas would I give her one. I gave her for
Christmas an embroidery pattern book, the DMC notebook, about 30 skeins of
floss, a hoop, and needles. She was so excited that she wanted to go home
immediately and start embroidering. She is very gifted in all the needle
skills. She also crochets and knits.

Lastly my mother gave me a book on how to create the Colonial Williamsburg
all natural Christmas decorations. It is called Colonial Williamsburg
Decorates for Christmas by Libbey Hodges Oliver. The book really inspired
me to finish my wreath of the 10-point star. This is my variation of one of
the 2009 CW wreaths at www.costumegallery.com/wreath.jpgThe photo is
extra large so that you can see it closely. The wreath is 36 across and
took one night to make. The gumballs and holly came from my yard. The
star's white area is small dried flowers and the cranberries are fresh. The
outline of the star is cinnamon sticks. I am in the process of putting my
photos of making the wreath on my FaceBook page. Do a search for The
Costume Gallery Websites to find the directions. By tonight all the
direction will be on FB.
