Re: [h-cost] wig

2006-07-01 Thread Bjarne og Leif Drews

Hi Melanie,
Many thanks.
I have 2 other wigs wich i use for earlyer style, i always take care of
them, and make them ready when i go to something. Usually i have some
stuffed sausages, wich i keep in the rolls when not using them.
Most difficult thing is that i always have to travel far to get to events,
and its a problem to carry all the things.
For this wig wich i am ordering from Derek Easton, i will be very carefull,
and i think i am going to buy myself a special box to travel with it.

Very stylish, but would it be difficult to maintain the perfection of
those rolls? (Wigs for the theatre tend to need a lot of maintenance, but
then I'm sure you would take better care of yours than most actors do!) I
think it would be very handsome on you.

Whoa-ho!! Wow!!

What kind of hat do you wear with this? Or is it for "indoor" sorts of
events? I know there was a short-term fashion for very very small
tricorne hats perched on larger wigs -- does this style of wig fall into
that fashion period?

What do you use to wrap the "tail" at the back? Black silk? In the
illustration, the wrap looks almost like leather, but I would think that
even thin leather would be heavy and awkward.

Good luck and have fun!

BTW, regarding the lovely yellow silk dress you posted recently --- the
lace-maker in me just HAS to ask: was there enough left over of the
lovely cotton lace to improvise a cap and lappets for the lady? Not that
you yourself had time for it, mind you, as I well know. She looks lovely

Ah, the bane of the reenactor: the proliferation of luggage! It's not
so bad when I drive somewhere, but to fly with all the gear can be
challenging. I recently did a series of three workshops at a convention
far away, each of which required an outfit from a different century

2006-07-01 Thread Bjarne og Leif Drews

Hi Beth,
I have a felt blank that i want to make a small tricorned hat off. I am a
little uncertain what i should trim it with, it needs to get a trim of some
sort in the edge, also to cover the black hat wire i am going to sew to the
edge, so that it will keep its shape.
We have events at the gustavians, where we are outside in the garden, and
inside. Every time we go outside, we use our hats, off cause, and takes the
hat off inside. In many cases the hat was not used on the head, but only
carried under the arm, i know it sounds rediculous, but it is a fact.
I know it would have ben lovely with a little cap and lappets, but i did not
have enough to make it, only the small neck frill. I do have leftovers of
the wider lace that i used for the sleaves, but i guess it would be two wide
for a cap.

Thanks to Melanie and everyone. I suppose it's time to try it. After I
do my next two loads of stuff I'm dyeing for the first time, I'll start
experimenting with softening some of the overly bright warm colors I did.

(My husband keeps saying he wants to have "fun" with the dye jobs and
considering some of his ideas, I have to keep telling him he's only
allowed to have "safe fun.")

I have, BTW, occasionally dyed white cotton lace by making coffee too
strong to drink and soaking the lace in it in a bowl till it was about
the right color. However, this was for things that won't be washed a
lot. Tea produces a pinker brown than coffee, and I don't like that
color as much. Quilters can get away with using it a lot because quilts
don't usually get washed often.

BTW, I went to the dentist in Berkeley a couple days ago, and the big
Discount Fabrics there is having a moving sale. Signs all over. I
didn't have time to go in, but I have to go back on Monday and maybe I
can make it then.

Taffeta is also made from filament yarn. This can be silk or nylon or

can't be wool or cotton or linen, since those are not long filaments.

Iridescent taffeta has warp and filling yarns of different colors.
Moire

A good magnifying glass cvan help you see the weave better, to

taffeta from a broadcloth or a satin weave.

[h-cost] Judging costume contest? Help!

20s/30s era, and is planning a costume contest. The tickets are sold to the

need help with the logistics of it. Should guests have to "sign up" for the

What I've seen that works well for the public is to have someone announce that
the contest is about to begin and that anyone interested should come up to
stage. You can either have appointed judges or do the winner(s) by crowd
applause. If you're worried about hurting someones feelings you can always have
some sort of side prize such as most imaginative. Hope this helps.

This is my suggestion, too--most creative, most colorful, most original,
best couple, etc. Sometimes I've had to wait to see what showed up to decide
on
appropriate categories. Certificates for these sorts of prizes cost almost
nothing.

And also to either have them come up to the stage or parade around the room,
if appropriate.

As to judging, audience judging can tend to be more based on popularity than
best costume.
At a recent event I attended, the organizers had the hired wait staff be the
judges. They were certainly impartial.

Well, I took a picture of the fabric.
http://www.goldsword.com/sfarmer/Garb/P7010076.JPG
You can see both sides of the fabric in the picture. The blue/lavender
really isn't "true color" but those of you who photograph know that
blue is notoriously difficult to photograph.

Anyway ... You can see the white warp and the pink and lavendar weft
threads. It's "shot" only in the sense that you can see the opposite
side of the fabric through the "holes" in the weave. (I hope that
makes sense!

Thanks! It really doesn't matter what kind of fabric it is, I'm just
curious.
