Someone please explain this little boy's costume to me,

[h-cost] Sing-along-with-Mitch

2010-08-02 Thread penny1a
Generation Gap Tonight at the dinner table, Mom, my husband, and I were
talking about Mitch Miller's death and our memories of his TV show,
Sing-along-with-Mitch. We were just a chattering. Our 27 y.o. son, Andy,
was dead silent. I asked Andy, You have no idea who we are talking about.
He nodded his head. So here it is for the younger generation.

A L-OO-N-G time ago, people only had one TV with 3 stations (if they
were lucky) and the entire family sat down and TV watched together after
dinner. The time was 1961-1966 and a show came on called
Sing-along-with-Mitch. Mitch was an big band leader and the songs were
Americana. The song words appeared on the screen with a bouncing ball. The
entire family sang the songs with the show. Think of early karaoke.

[h-cost] Antiques Roadshow

2010-08-19 Thread penny1a
We are going to Antiques Roadshow Saturday in DC. We have 9 am tickets. I
am so excited. We can bring four items. Is anyone from the list going?

I am bringing my collection of 23 original fashion plates of French plays
from the late 1890s-1903. Some are Sarah Bernhardt plays. The
illustrations show the costume changes per character with five to six
costumes per fashion plate. These once belonged to the illustrator or
editor. A while back, we discussed these plates on h-costume. I was having
a problem scanning them because they are so large. I now own a scanner with
a large enough bed to scan the plates. Hopefully, I will getting them
online in the autumn.

I am also bringing some hand-tinted stereoviews from the first stereoview
London publisher. The photos are of weddings. A photo historian told me
that these are the earliest known hand-tinted stereoviews that they have
seen by this photographer. I am excited to see if this is true.

We are bringing an antique inlaid game table that I gave my husband for his
birthday. It has a chess table and a roulette wheel. It is beautiful! We
really don't care about the value, we just want to know how old it is.

I am trying to decide what our 4th item will be. Maybe you all can help me
decide. I need to know the following items value for insurance purposes.
So let me know what you think that I should bring:
1. Hand-beaded traditional Philippians dress (we discussed this dress on
h-costume)
2. An 1814 book titled Picturesque Representations of The Dress and Manners
of the English. It is a rare book and has full page hand-tinted
illustrations of the occupations with a corresponding page with the
occupation description. You can see thumbnails of this book at:
http://www.costumegallery.com/1814/British_Occupations/Laborers/ This is
just the laborers section online. I own the entire book and haven't put all
of them online yet.
3. My Princess Diana auction dress books and photos. The books are
autographed by fashion designer David Emanuel (Di's wedding dress) and some
of the current dress owners. They autographed the books when I worked on
the dresses For newbies to h-costume, I have worked with David and seven of
the charity dresses. I don't know if these would really be classified as an
antique.
4. Delineator magazine collection spanning from 1880-1930.
5. A 1900s template ad book that was used by the fashion advertising
industry for fashion ads in magazines and newspapers. The ads in fashion
magazines were originally templates and the publisher would insert the
business info into the templates for publication.

Let me know what you think my 4th item should be. We are leaving for DC
Friday night.

[h-cost] I found my way back!

2010-10-12 Thread penny1a
I have been going through h-costume withdrawal since the beginning of
August. YEA! I am back home! I have never been away from this email list
this long. I bought a new laptop and thought that is why I couldn't receive
email from h-costume. Tonight we found out that my email server had changed
my security settings and had blocked the email list.

While I was away, I have been having a lot of fun. I have purchased the
following:

***about 200 vintage hats from 1920s-1960s

*** two wedding dresses--one from the 1940s and another from the 1920s
complete with the veil and undergarments.

***1940s evening gown

***Some late 1960s-early 1970s ladies' dresses

***set of very 1890s large fashion prints.they are larger than my new large
scanner bed.

***lots of antique photos of weddings and 1860s families (found at a low
price on a Mississippi trip)

I wish my son would hurry up and take the wallpaper down in my future photo
studio. I am dying to photograph these items.

Antique Roadshow in Washington DC was a blast. They valued my collection of
late 1890s/early 1900s French theater costume illustrations at over $10,000.
The collection is now residing in a bank vault. AR said that to a fashion
or theater historian, the collection is priceless.

During the past month, I have photographed three events. The first event was
Citie of Henricus-Publick Day, Chesterfield, VA. Henricus was the second
English settlement in the New World. The second event was the Chickahominy
Indian Pow-Wow. We have some great detailed photos and videos from this
event. I was in costume heaven at this event. Friday , I photographed a
1950s sock hop Cruisin' on the Coast in Mississippi.lots of poodle skirts
and vintage cars!

You can see a few of the photos on my business' Facebook page. These are a
sneak peak. I have about 1,000 photos from these events to put on my
websites.

Re: [h-cost] I found my way back!

2010-10-12 Thread penny1a
Hi Kathy,

Long time since we have chatted. They didn't film me at my request...I was
going on no sleep and looked like crap. They were looking for American
treasures to film. Since my collection is French they weren't that
interested in filming it, thank goodness. I just really wanted to know the
collection's value for insurance purposes. You might see me in the
background when they show the bear skin rug. I was at the table behind
them. The show airs in 2011.

Pow-wow...I was trying to figure out the same thing about the headdress.
There were about five men with this style headdress and various styles of
make-up. The photos that I am going to put on my website are high
resolution. So you might be able to tell more from those photos.

BTW, the Indians at the pow-wow are not just Chickahominy people. I learned
a lot by going to this event. First, the Chickahominy are the people who
kidnapped Jamestowne's John Smith. Second, at a pow-wow, the host is the
Chickahominy. They invited Indian nations from all over the U.S. Their
dress is called regalia. They are offended if you call it costume. It may
take a lifetime to complete their regalia. Some of the regalia may be
inherited from an ancestor. The Chickahominy holds classes to teach their
young people how to loom-bead and create their regalia. The Jingle Girls
have an interesting history behind the bells on their regalia. The bells
are made with old tobacco or snuff tin lids. We have some beautiful video
of them dancing. The jingle makes an enchanting sound. You can see a
close-up photo of a Jingle Girl's skirt on the Henricus slideshow.

FYI, Henricus is up-river from Jamestowne. Pocahontas and John Rolfe were
married there.

I really think it depends upon who you are talking to as to the term used.
Last weekend, I was around the general public and referred to my work as a
fashion historian. This is the easiest term for the general public to
understand. But I did explain to those interested the Costume
Society/academic definition of costume.

Re: [h-cost] 1860s photos

2010-10-12 Thread penny1a
Lisa,

I have just started collecting 1860s, so this collection is not very big
yet. I do have a nice large group wedding photo from England. Another
1860s photo I purchased from GWTW costume designer Walter Plunkett's
grandson. The reason this collection is small is because in Richmond,
Virginia 1860s photos are very expensive. Last week during my Mississippi
trip, we went antiquing and found 1860s photos for $6 each. I bought
everyone that I found. Ironically all the photos are the North. My future
daughter-in-law was with me at the antique stores. She is minoring in
costume design and knows the period's costumes. She is keeping an eye out
for more 1860s photos in MS and Alabama.

[h-cost] Fwd: R.I.P. Carolyn Kayta Barrows

2010-11-08 Thread penny1a
[Penny Ladnier] Forwarding this about Kayta. She was a h-costume member for
years. Kayta sure will be missed.

She is survived by two daughters, Eileen Martz, Eleanor Martz Gomez,
Eleanor's husband Paolo Gomez, her little brother Gary, his wife
Sabrina, and their children, and her mother.

According to Eleanor, Kayta's stated wishes were that she did not
 want a
funeral or big memorial service. As an alternative, I would suggest:

Have a small gathering of friends, and serve caramels and
 butterscotch
flavored items. Kayta greatly enjoyed butterscotch pudding.

No matter which group Kayta was in, she was frequently a teacher. In
S.C.A. and science fiction fandom, she taught hand crafts such as
embroidery, hand sewing, and provided information on how to be a
 better
costumer. For Dickens Faire, some remember her for helping them learn
how to dance. So, if you have something that you can teach others, do
so. It doesn't have to be hand crafts. Just share your knowledge with
other people, and that will be a memorial to her.

If you have a historical park in your neighborhood, help it out.
 See if
they would like some historical re-enactors to put on period
 appropriate
events. Kayta was involved with the Hyde Street Pier in San Francisco
where she created period appropriate events, one of them being a
Suffragette Protest in March, I believe. If someone local could
 step in
and keep events alive there, that would be a living memorial.

One of the best gifts that Kayta gave me was that she was
 diplomatically
honest with me when no one else would tell me things that I needed to
know. I encourage others to do this with someone that others may find
 difficult.

At this point, Kayta's daughters have not stated any particular
 wishes.
If people want to send condolence messages, I will forward them. I do
not feel right publishing their e-mail addresses at this time. If
anything is stated, I will let people know.

work at museums, with costume collections.

At the request of the Center for the Future of Museums, I wrote a blog post
about my experiences visiting the Smithsonian's costume collection, with
suggestions on how dedicated amateur scholars and museums might work
together. I'd love to get your comments, as would the CFM, as helping the

Re: [h-cost] how museums can help costumers

2010-11-17 Thread penny1a
I believe something people need to understand is the scope of putting things
online. I have been doing this for 14 years. I have photographed thousands
of items. Over 20,000 photos of actual costumes are just waiting to go
online. I photograph at a high resolution with detailed photos of costumes
overhead, back side, inside, extreme close-up of embellishments, etc.
Anyone that have seen or had me photograph them at Costume-Con know how many
detailed photos that I take. I have a massive collection to go online from
a university's fashion that I photographed and documented in 2006-2007. It
took me a year to photograph and document their collection. Since them I
have purchased a large collection in-house of 20th Century hats, yet to be
photographed. On top of this, I have hundreds of period publications and
antique photographs waiting to go online.

Since I am a staff of one, I count on volunteers to help with putting items
online. Since the economy has been so poor, my volunteers have had little
time to help. I am down to three volunteers who type articles when they
have spare time. My webpage coders and graphics people are no longer
available. So I am slowly putting things online by myself. I would love to
get more volunteers. If you are interested, please email me privately.

As for viewing high resolution photos online, I use the software Zoomify
that allows you to zoom in really close. I know the McCord Museum uses it.
It doesn't cost that much and is simple to use. The software makes it very
hard for someone to steal the images. Each image can be divided in hundreds
of pieces. I haven't had a problem with someone stealing these images so
far.

I have worked at a museum, a university, and been at my business a long time
in the internet world. We all want to education people on what we have
available. But it all comes down to money and man power. There was a time
when my business depended solely on subscribers and our students. But as
the economy shifted, advertisers have been keeping me afloat. But that
money is not enough to actually hire people.

[h-cost] It is like Christmas Presents!

2010-11-21 Thread penny1a
Saturday, I rented a climate controlled storage unit to house some of my
collections. We started taking the hat and bridal dress collections out of my
office...this is like Christmas presents to myself! I had the hat boxes stored
everywhere in-house. There were so many that I had forgot about some of them.
The same thing happened with the boxed bridal dresses. They are now nicely
organized in the storage unit. I can find them easily! Now that they are out
of my office, I can get to the large closet and can see what goodies are in
there.

This would make a good episode of Hoarders but my office wasn't dirty...just
hats stored everywhere! LOL! Might be fun for h-costumers to watch but not
the general public.

cut-work embroidered Christmas runner last summer in an antique store. The
embroidery is machine made.

A link to my 2009 photos of the handmade Christmas decorations at Colonial
Williamsburg (CW) homes. I took some really good close-ups so that if
someone wanted, you can make them.

 http://www.costumegallery.com/Williamsburg/2009/1010984.htm
http://www.costumegallery.com/Williamsburg/2009/1010984.htm . The CW
decorations are made of all natural items. I am returning to CW Dec. 11 to
see if they have new decorations and photograph them. Today I am making my
variation of this wreath:

 http://www.costumegallery.com/Williamsburg/2009/1020053.htm
http://www.costumegallery.com/Williamsburg/2009/1020053.htm . I collected
some of the items from my yard last summer...like the gumballs, tails of
ornamental grasses, etc. I tried to grow bachelor buttons for the wreath
but they didn't grow well. So I have to come up with something else for the
small white flowers. If you have a suggestion, please pass it along to me.
Hopefully, I will photograph my progress of making the wreath.

Re: [h-cost] What Costume-related gifts did you get?

2010-12-29 Thread penny1a
Looks like some of you racked up on the gifts. My future daughter-in-law
gave me a box of antique lace that she had purchased at an estate sale. In
the box was a fine lace bertha in perfect condition, very delicate lace
collar, and some collars and cuffs that are tacked to tissue paper. We are
trying to figure out why they are attached to the tissue paper in a manner
of a personal display. I wonder if it is like the embroidery portfolios at
the Valentine Museum. Future brides would present their future MIL with a
portfolio of embroidery stitches to prove that the bride was worthy of the
groom.

The best gift was to and from my 9 y.o. granddaughter. I always wanted a
daughter to teach her to sew. No such luck with my daughter Katie. Last
summer on vacation I was embroidering and my granddaughter wanted to learn
how to do it. So I taught her some basics and she fell in love with
embroidery. She also fell in love my DMC floss notebook that holds the
floss. She asked for Christmas would I give her one. I gave her for
Christmas an embroidery pattern book, the DMC notebook, about 30 skeins of
floss, a hoop, and needles. She was so excited that she wanted to go home
immediately and start embroidering. She is very gifted in all the needle
skills. She also crochets and knits.

Lastly my mother gave me a book on how to create the Colonial Williamsburg
all natural Christmas decorations. It is called Colonial Williamsburg
Decorates for Christmas by Libbey Hodges Oliver. The book really inspired
me to finish my wreath of the 10-point star. This is my variation of one of
the 2009 CW wreaths at www.costumegallery.com/wreath.jpgThe photo is
extra large so that you can see it closely. The wreath is 36 across and
took one night to make. The gumballs and holly came from my yard. The
star's white area is small dried flowers and the cranberries are fresh. The
outline of the star is cinnamon sticks. I am in the process of putting my
photos of making the wreath on my FaceBook page. Do a search for The
Costume Gallery Websites to find the directions. By tonight all the
direction will be on FB.

[h-cost] 15th Year Anniversary

2011-01-06 Thread penny1a
Today our The Costume Gallery Websites 15th Anniversary. Hard to believe
that we have been online that long. I started the online Research Library
as a college student. This was also my first year on h-costume. I hope
some of those members from then are still on h-costume. If so, many, many
thanks for all your support while I was building my first website. In 1996,
there were only a handful of costume related websites. After having trouble
finding sites to research, I started the online Library and purchasing old
costume history publications to put on the website. I rarely give my own
opinion on the sites' content. I save my opinions for Facebook. My goal all
these years with the websites is to present the resources for others to
research.

To celebrate our anniversary, we are opening up free access to the public
for 13 of 14 websites. The Costume Classroom is only open to our students.

Re: [h-cost] 15th Year Anniversary

2011-01-06 Thread penny1a
Thank you Carol. I did the h-costume directory in 1997 or 1998. I had
forgotten all about the directory. That was fun! It is so hard to believe
it has been 15 years online for my business. My daughter Katie was 4 years
old when I started my business. She would fall asleep in my lap while I was
on the computer. Now she is in college.

Drea Leed started her website just after mine. Costumes.org was after
Drea's. Julie Zetterburg Sardo of The Costume Page and I finally met at the
last Costume-Con. We talked about what were the first mega costume history
websites. Hers was the first site. Mine was third or fourth. I can't tell
you how excited I was to meet Julie after talking online for so many years.
I also finally got to meet h-costumers old timers Sandy Pierre and Robin
at the same Costume-Con!!! What a blast!

So who are the old-timers on h-costume that are still here? What year did
you join h-costume? I joined in 1995 while taking my costume history
classes in college. I was so excited to find out there were people all over
the world who loved costume history. Today I guess people a lot of people
do not understand how little about historic costuming was online in the
mid-1990s. H-costume was the only email list that I could find around the
time. Oher lists followed h-costume like Vintage clothing, f-costume
(fantasy) and h-needlework (historic). F-costume is still around on
yahoogroups and h-needlework is on ansteorra.org. I miss some of the
h-costumer old-timers who are not on the list anymore like RL Shep, Margo,
and Teddy. I can't tell you what an important part of my education that
h-costumers played in my life.Shep used to give me so much good advice
about publishing in this area.

Thank you to all h-costumers for 16 years of learning and friendship!

Re: [h-cost] 15th Year Anniversary--A shout out!

2011-01-07 Thread penny1a
I wanted to give a shout out to the many people who have made my wonderful
job so much easier over the years...many, many have been h-costumers. You
all are such a great support group and a wealth of information!!! Many of
our websites' visitors, subscribers, and students have been from this list.
A large majority of our instructors and intern volunteers I met on this
list. Some of you have loaned your collections or donated to go online in
our Research Library.

Kathleen Mitchell has loaned us several books, given me a vast collection
of 1st Communion photos, and sold me her collections of antique wedding
photos and antique fashion magazines. She has been such a wonderful
supportive person over the years. Something that I didn't learn in my
college business law class was copyright laws. Boy, I really learned them
with the discussions between Fran and RL Shep!!! Kimiko, you have to be the
fastest person that I have ever seen at restoring antique fashion plates for
me. Shirley Hobbs, a quiet lurker, was one of our first typist interns and
is still with us. She typed almost all the fashion trends reports in our
1860s A Year in Fashion series and a lot of sections of the Costume
Dictionary. Franchesca Havas has been a Costume Classroom instructor for
so long that I have forgotten when she started. She knows more about gloves
than anyone I have ever met.

Many are h-costumers are perfectly preserved our Online Costume Balls. That
was such a blast doing the ball with all of you. It was fun to see you try
to guess who some of the others were. Sandy and Pierre I looked forward to
your entries every year. Robin, I believe you are a walking costume
encyclopedia and it was a joy to meet you at Costume-Con. It was also fun
having Sandy and Pierre to stalk you at CC so that I could meet you in
person...with standing up. Ann Wass was one of our instructors and I met
her in person not long after I graduated from college. I have rarely met up
with you when you were not in costume!

A BIG thank you to Eliza for being such a wonderful list-mom to all of us
for so many years. You are a costume saint!

Gosh, so many fun memories and great times with h-costume. I could write a
novel on the fun we have all had here!

Re: [h-cost] Thank you and 1940s Halo Hat Question

2011-01-12 Thread penny1a
I thought that I had my 1940s bridal photos with the halo hats on my laptop
or external hard-drive but don't. I will have to pull the photos off my
master computer Wed. night. I am sorry for the delay on the photos.

I saw halo hats in 1941 films on TMC Tuesday. One film was Affectionately
Yours trailer, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjpRQBKNO4s shows a side
view of the actress Merle Oberon's halo hat at 1:16 minute and Rita
Hayworth wearing a nice halo hat at 1:48 (great view ). If I recall
correctly, the earliest I have seen halo hats is 1938 in a ladies' magazine.
Halo hats evolved to a skull cap with the halo added at the top and side
with no brim at the back of the head. Sometimes the brim of the hat has
large semi-roll to provide the halo effect. Generally the caps of the hats,
do not touch the temples are forehead hairline. They are shifted back so
that the brim provides the full halo effect. Think of the halo of the
Virgin Mary paintings or Jesus in The Last Supper. But I have also seen
this same halo effect in Byzantine paintings.

These hats have been a pet project of mine for the past year. I first saw
them in wedding photos with the brides wearing the hats. This is a
beautiful effect. The veil is attached to the crown and flows floor length
or longer. This reminds me of the Virgin Mary. Next I started noticing them
in late 1930-1940s movies worn with suits. I started purchasing the halo
hats at estate sales. Since I am waiting to have a space to photograph my
hat collection, I moved my hat collection to a storage unit. So I don't
have them in-house to snap a quick photo of one.

I have wondered for a long time, what and who started this fashion trend.

[h-cost] Your family and costuming genes

2011-01-20 Thread penny1a
I was re-reading Margo's post and it got me to thinking...How many of our
family members are enjoying costuming since we became a member of h-costume?
Or maybe inherited the costuming gene? If so what kind of costuming?

All my kids like getting into costumes...sometimes for no real reason. We
were lucky to have inherited my husband's family costume bag. My
grandchildren go straight to the bag...now totes of costumes to play in when
they visit us. Their closets are full of their own costumes. My 5 y.o
granddaughter wears her costumes everywhere...to school, church, the store,
etc. My 9 y.o. granddaughter has started sewing and is very passionate
about it.

My son, Patrick, is the one who inherited the most costuming genes. I
didn't know until I saw the playbill but he was designing the costumes for
his high school plays. He made his first costume for an anime convention
and won an award for construction. He has worked in the costuming retail
industry for 4 yrs as a manager of Spirits Halloween stores. This year Pat
went back to college for theater technology. He has been awarded full
scholarships for college.

Re: [h-cost] Costume Con

2011-01-27 Thread penny1a
I encourage people to go to Costume-Con regardless of your level of
costuming experience. I have been to two CC and find the people SO
friendly. They love to talk about their costumes and how they made them.
Last year I did meet more h-costumers than the one at Baltimore. The CCs
seem to take on the personality of the location. Both years were so
different. I do like when the event is all on one floor of the hotel...more
people seem to get to mingle.

Last year the topic came up on h-costume about newbies worried that they
didn't have a costume to wear. I haven't worn a costume either year and
didn't feel bad and no one treated me differently. I am there as press and
photographing, so it is not practical for me to wear a costume. When Robin
first met me at CC, I was laying in the floor photographing costume details.

One of the things that I really enjoy about CC is meeting costumers of all
ages. Last year we had a blast photographing a little girl in an 18th
Century costume. She stole our hearts! We met some mothers who designed
costumes for their children. It was a chance for them to brag about their
creations...child and costume.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

[h-cost] Mummers Museum and Mardi Gras Trip

2011-01-30 Thread penny1a
Kudos to Sandy Pierre for the great recommendation to go to the Mummers
Museum in Philadelphia. We did the photo shoot Saturday morning. Joe I
took 700 photos in 2 hrs. We photographed all the costumes on exhibit. Each
costume may have up to 10-15 photos to show all the details from front,
back, and side angles. In the next couple of days, I will put online a few
of the photos from this trip. I wish I could start right now into getting
this project online BUT.

This week, I have to switch my work to costume photos from the Mobile,
Alabama Mardi Gras Museum...400 photos. I want to get them on my website
before I leave for Mardi Gras on March 1 and (returning March 15.) If I
have extra time, (no way), I want to put online my photos from MG Day 2010
on St. Charles St., New Orleans.

I am praying that the MG Museum in Biloxi, Mississippi is finally open so
that I can fit in a photo shoot of their costumes. The museum was on the
beach front where Hurricane Katrina hit. I did a video and photos in 1999
of their costumes but am not 100% happy with the results. I have improved my
techniques. I am staying an extra week on the Gulf Coast, so I might
re-shoot the costume photos for the NO MG Museum.

When I return from MG, I plan to get the last of my 2010 Costume-Con photos
and video online before the 2011 event.

[h-cost] Robe or train???

2011-02-10 Thread penny1a
I feel so silly asking this question. I am working on photos of coronation
costume photos for Mardi Gras. I am looking for the correct term to use for
the detachable train (?) worn by the king and queen. You may view the
questionable piece here:

http://www.costumegallery.com/MardiGras/2010/Mobile/Museum/Queen1/P1100236me
d.jpg I have checked my costume dictionaries and the train definition
seems to fit better than robe. I have heard it called both ways. What the
correct word to use?

[h-cost] 100th Anniversary of Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire

2011-02-27 Thread penny1a
March 25, 2011 is the 100th Anniversary. Monday night PBS' show NOVA is
featuring the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. Check your PBS listing for
the time in your area. For those not in the U.S. PBS generally runs the
video online after the episode has aired.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/triangle/

Cornell University has had a website for years about the event but has
updated with a newer version with audio from three witnesses to the fire.
It is well worth listening. There is a lot of info about the event. I
couldn't get the photo slideshows to work but viewed a photo and had to go
back to the index.

There are also some videos on YouTube about the fire.

[h-cost] Off-topic: Costume Project Completed

2011-02-28 Thread penny1a
I have completed my project of the Mardi Gras costumes at the Mobile
Carnival Museum, Mobile, Alabama. About 98% of their exhibited costumes
are on this area:

http://www.costumegallery.com/MardiGras/2010/Mobile/Museum/

There are 201costume photos each with their webpage and six index pages.
The images are high resolution so that you can view the details. When you
zoom in on the photos it takes a few seconds for the image to focus.the
photos are very large. Make sure to look at the robe's trains closely.
Each one reflects their owner's personality, hobbies, family history, etc.
Needless to say, each costume is different and cost thousands of dollars to
have designed and executed. The craftsmanship is stunning. Most of the
robe trains are about 18 ft. long. Please make sure to look at two photos
that I am thrilled that it turned out so good. They are of the back of a
queen's collar.

tm (dead ahead view)

http://www.costumegallery.com/MardiGras/2010/Mobile/Museum/Queen8/P1100322.h
tm (a view from the floor looking upward)

My goal now is to find newspaper articles about the King Queen
costumes.this was published each year in the local newspaper. I leave
Tuesday to spend two weeks at Mardi Gras from New Orleans to Mobile,
Alabama. I hope to have some time the second week to do some research. I
also plan to go back to the museum for some additional photos and fact
finding. What I don't find on this trip, I will be back in Mobile for
three weeks in late May-early June. My youngest son is getting married in
Mobile at the time.

Last year, I tried to make it to Mobile for Joe Cain Day and go to his mock
funeral with his Merry Widows. I wanted to film and photograph the event.
My airplane got snowed in and arrived the day after the event. This year, I
am leaving five days prior to make sure that I am there on time. Joe Cain
is a very important person in the history of Mardi Gras. The holiday was
stopped during the Civil War. In 1866 Joe Cain came out into the streets of
Mobile parading in costume. This event started Mardi Gras parades back to
rolling. More info:

http://www.cainsmerrywidows.org/mardi_gras

I have an extremely busy schedule until March 9th. March 3rd, I go to
Loyola University in New Orleans to meet up with their Library services
director and costume design professor. This university is a group
subscribers to our online Library and I am going to be a guest speaker for
the costume history class. Also catdhing some N.O. parades that day.
March 4-6th I am at Mobile for MG parades. March 7-9th we are off to New
Orleans for MG parades. I will have a film and photography crew with me in
a suite on Canal St. All parades pass our hotel. We are especially
thrilled to photograph the Zulu parade.
http://www.kreweofzulu.com/zulu/who/

I have wanted since childhood to document Mardi Gras costume history. The
dream is finally coming true. Happy Mardi Gras everyone! I hope you find
the joy in the costume that I do.

[h-cost] A Call of Help!!! Mardi Gras Update

2011-03-07 Thread penny1a

I am at Mardi Gras having a blast. Monday and Mardi Gras Day we will be in
New Orleans. I need some help! Mardi Gras morning there will be a
Renaissance costumed walking club (group) who will be strolling the French
Quarter of New Orleans. I don't know their name or touring schedule. They
end their stroll at the Mississippi River then drop wreaths in it. Next,
anyone who has ashes of loved ones may sprinkle them in the river. Can you
please find a website with this the name and tour route of the touring
group. I want to photo the event. This is a real funeral.

Today I attended the mock funeral for Joe Cain in Mobile, Alabama. Joe Cain
was a real person who started Mardi Gras back up in 1866 after the Civil
War. Sunday was Joe Cain Day aka the People's Mardi Gras Parade. The day
starts with Cain's Widows with a grave side service at his actual grave.
The Merry Widows are dressed in mourning attire from various times from
bustle to present day. My favorite was his bustle beauty widow.bustle
mourning dress, a garter, and she smokes a large cigar. At the cemetery
after the funeral, a man got on bended knee and removed her garter. After
the funeral there was a New Orleans Marching Club (with Dixieland jazz music
like in the movies). We went to the MG parade where the Merry Widows were
on the first Mardi Gras float. While waiting for the parade to begin, the
widows walk around giving out black roses and black strands of beads, lucky
people also get a cup, special beads, and a black garter. Guess what I
got?!!! All the previous and press access to walk around and photograph all
of this!!! I weaved all my roses together to make a wreath of black roses
for my head.

I walked back to my holding area and one of my crew noticed a lot of women
in red attire stationed before the Merry Widows Float. We HAD to check this
out! The women were Joe Cain's Mistresses. One Lady in Red looked at my
black rose wreath and said, You need some red in there and handed me two
red roses. Love press access! Later, I weaved the red roses into my
wreath.

I photographed and filmed the entire parade. Ever want to be a target at a
MG parade, put a video camera on a tripod. Mine was covered with MG beads.
I had to hold on to the tripod to keep my camcorder from falling. Beads
were hitting my head and hanging from the wreath on my head.

Some Photos: Please do not copy these photos.I am just putting them online
quickly to show you.

[h-cost] Great Trip!!!

2011-03-20 Thread penny1a
New Orleans: I am back from Mardi Gras! OMG!!! Wait until you see the
photos and video! Zulu's costumes were great! I am working on them now. I
asked one of the Zulu paraders to stop so that I could photograph him. Got
the photo and he gave me the most treasured item of Mardi Gras...the golden
coconut!

I also got to see Pete Fountain and the cast of HBO's series Treme...Steve
Zahn is as crazy as on the show. All the cast was on the float. I was so
excited to see Pete Fountain. I grew up hearing his music. I did get a
close-up view of the Comus Queen. I watched on TV the toast of Comus and
Rex and their trains were so plain in comparison to Mobile's MG royalty.

Mobile: I got lots of photos of Joe Cain's Merry Widows. There is a lot of
history behind the story. The Widows were so thrilled that someone from
Virginia came to photograph them. One of the widows, my favorite, was
wearing a bustle dress. After the funeral, a man went down on one knee and
she pulled up her skirt and he took off her garter. She also smoked a large
cigar. What a ham! The Merry Widows wore large Edwardian, Merry Widows
style. Their prize throw was a cup with their signature trinkets, emblem
necklace, doubloons, and a garter. Guess who gave it to me...Mrs. Bustle.
They also give out black silk roses...I got a rose from each widow and wove
them into a wreath for my head.. The Widows were a true story! Nine widows
showed up at the real Joe Cain funeral.

The Widows always started the Joe Cain Mardi Gras parade in their special
float. My sister noticed some ladies stationed in front of their float--all
dressed in nice, some sexy red dresses. I flashed my press pass to
investigate who they were and photograph them. Six years ago these ladies
showed up at the parade all wearing red. They call themselves Joe Cain's
Mistresses. They saw my black rose wreath and said, You need some red in
that! They gave me some red roses for the wreath. I hand carried the
wreath everywhere, even on the airplane.

While in Mobile, I took more photos at the Mobile Carnival Museum. After a
big search for the location of the local history archive library, we found
it with two hours to spare. I am researching descriptions of the kings and
queens costumes back to the 1920s. So much thought was put into each train
to reflect their family history, personalities, hobbies, religions, etc. We
did pull newspaper articles with the descriptions for two years. A BIG
bonus was an article about a designer who created 25 robes/trains for 25
Kings queens from 1909-1950s. She made all of the trains with a treadle
sewing machine. I will be back in Mobile late May through mid-June for my
son's wedding. I hope that I time to pull more research.

I did find out that the museum's lower floor was flooded during Hurricane
Katrina. They lost some of their 1960s kings queens regalia. I pray that
we can find our master copy of the video were shot in 1999 with these
costumes. It has to be somewhere in our house. We have been tearing the
house apart to find it. I did photograph a 1961 Queen train crown this
visit.

Sadly, Biloxi's Mardi Gras Museum is still not open. They are working on
the historic mansion that housed the collection. The museum was under 20
ft. of water during Hurricane Katrina. Their costumes were sent to Jackson,
Mississippi to try to restore them.

Re: [h-cost] Great Trip!!!

2011-03-21 Thread penny1a
Sharon,

From Zulu's website and the history of the parade and their costumes:
http://www.kreweofzulu.com/history/

Of all the throws to rain down from the many floats in the parades during
carnival, the Zulu coconut or Golden Nugget is the most sought after. The
earliest reference to the coconut appears to be about 1910 when the coconuts
were given from the floats in their natural hairy state. Some years later
there is a reference to Lloyd Lucus, the sign painter, scraping and
painting the coconuts. This, in all likelihood, was the forerunner to the
beautifully decorated coconuts we see today.

With the proliferation of lawsuits from people alleging injury from thrown
coconuts, the organization was unable to get insurance coverage in 1987. So
that year, the honored tradition was suspended. After much lobbying, the
Louisiana Legislature passed SB188, aptly dubbed the Coconut Bill, which
excluded the coconut from liability for alleged injuries arising from the
coconuts handed from the floats. On July 8, 1988, then-governor Edwards
signed the bill into law.

Zulu's costumes are from simple grass skirts to massive elaborate feathered
back boards like in Rio worn by the court. The most famous King Zulu was
Louis Armstrong. The men in the parade wear black face makeup.

[h-cost] The Archaeology of a Dress

2011-04-01 Thread penny1a
This is really cool article about an important historic theatrical costume
and its conservation. A Victorian dress decorated with 1,000 real beetle
wings is set to go back on display following 1,300 hours of painstaking
conservation work carried out by a team led by Zenzie Tinker. The costume
was originally worn by actress Ellen Terry with her portrayal of Lady
Macbeth at London's Lyceum Theatre in 1888.

Re: [h-cost] pouting about R. Wedding coverage

2011-04-29 Thread penny1a
CNN had live coverage since midnight EST. I am in a hotel and we brought
our VCR to tape it. My husband woke up at 4 am panicked because he set the
VCR up incorrectly. Thank goodness he woke up to fix the problem. I
believe CNN is repeating it tonight.

As for Kate's dress...I have seen several of this style wedding dresses from
the 1940s. I own one without the slit neckline. I have one or two original
1940s wedding photos with this style dress. Fashion repeating itself AGAIN.

[h-cost] 1st White Wedding Dress Trend: Anne of Brittany or Queen Victoria

2011-05-09 Thread penny1a
My local newspaper ran an article about wedding traditions,

http://www2.timesdispatch.com/lifestyles/celebrations/2011/may/04/tradition-
tales-ar-1015954/ Scroll down to The White Wedding Dress.

So who started the trend of the white wedding dress, Anne of Brittany or
Queen Victoria? The year 1499 is out of my league of knowledge. I know all
about Victoria's wedding dress trend.

Ann,

We lived in Gulfport until 1980. Maybe that was when they changed.
Previously it was to represent the antebellum period. Mobile, Natchez, and
I believe Vicksburg do the trail maids. Am I leaving out any other cities?
I believe Albert Cat said that they did them in his area of North Carolina.
We discussed this topic on the h-costume a long time ago. Ann were the
trail maids at Bellingrath Gardens? That is just a little way up from the
Fowl River from the rental house that we were staying at last week. Funny,
that I have never been there.

I didn't realize until reading the newspaper last week that this is
something society's debs did.

Re: [h-cost] Jaw Dropping: Final Price for Debbie Reynolds costumes

2011-06-22 Thread penny1a
You are welcome Julie. From what I have read the sell bought 18 million. I
didn't hear about the sale until it was on the TV news Saturday. But I
didn't see TV or internet from June 1-12 because of my son's wedding. I did
some backtracking to find out the info that I shared with you all. I have
joined Profiles in History Facebook page
http://www.facebook.com/ProfilesInHistory to receive updates. That is where
I found out that the next sale is in Dec. Maybe we can order the next
catalog's sale when they announce its publication. I'll make sure to let
you know when it is available. People are begging for another issue to be
published of the first catalog.

Maybe because of Debbie's age that she decided to sell the collection. She
is 77 years old. There are supposed to have been a museum for her
collection near Dollywood. I guess it fell through.

From reading their FB page, there were several buyers. Some of Errol
Flynn's costumes went to a small museum in Ohio. I was sad that I missed
the auction being a live feed online. My daughter-in-law saw some of the
auction on TVs in Vegas casinos.

A couple of people on my business FB page had bought the catalogs. I don't
know how they heard about the auction. I would have flown in to see the
collection if I had known about it beforehand. There were three preview
dates and people were allowed to photograph the costumes.

The VA is going to exhibit a select few of the costumes. There is a page
in the beginning of the book.

Re: [h-cost] Where is everyone hanging out these days?

2011-08-07 Thread penny1a
I have been following online trends for years. As for the slow time on
email lists web, July/August and November/December are slow months. This
is due to holidays/vacations months. The busiest months are Sept., Oct.,
Jan.-March. Sept-Oct is due to Halloween and schools/colleges going back
into session. The dead of winter months are the second busiest
time...especially in locations that receive a lot of snow. This trend has
occurred every year since the mid-1990s.

Current events really do take its toll on how much time we spend online.
After 9-11 you could hear a pin drop on email lists for months. All of the
costuming email lists were so quiet. Since 2008, when the economy started
getting bad, email lists have been receiving less traffic. A lot of people
are still out of work. People were sending a lot of posts from work.
People may have backed off of doing so, probably scared they might lose
their jobs if caught. Many businesses are also monitoring employees emails
too. Two of my adult kids do not have internet in their homes and do all
internet over their smart phones.

Presently, I am on six email lists that are active, USITT costumers,
h-costume, 19thCWomen, h-needlework, professional DC webmasters, and a
genealogy list. I know that treadle-on is still very active...a little too
active for me. Loved it, but there were just too many posts to keep up
with.

I keep up with Facebook several times a day because it is on my phone and
laptop. I don't receive email on my phone because of 300+ spam messages
that I receive a day. I have personal and business FB pages. Some of my
costuming friends float on both pages. We had a fun fashion/costuming chat
back and forth on my personal page Friday night. I don't know why, but a
lot of costuming people find me first on my personal page. Then I send them
a private message inviting them to like my business page. I can't post
on others FB pages as my business which is a pain. My business FB page
relates to fashion and any kind of costume. There, I pass along a lot of
events, job announcements, and interesting webpages. I don't want business
FB page to be just about my business.Once in a while, I have a contest
and give away something. As for the FB length problem, I post the limit of
words and inform people to look in the comments area for more info.

I don't get into blogs. I think they are great for some people, but I just
never got into it. BTW, from the DC professional IT email list...blogs have
been on their way out for over a year.

As for sewing...it is the #1 hobby for women this past year. More women are
sewing their own clothes or reconstructing clothes than in the past few
decades. Second-hand clothing stores are doing well too. Some of these
increases are due to the antique type and fashion designer shows on TV.
American Pickers is coming out with a show for interior design that starts
this month. Another trend to look at is an increase of stay-at-home
parents in the 20-30 y.o. demographic. I can go through my personal FB
friends and surprised by this increase...and a good many are sewing! This
group are not float overs for costumers...these are friends of my kids and
nieces.

As for traveling...According to AAA more people are traveling on vacations
this year than in the past two years. This was a good indicator of people
have adjusted to higher gas prices and such. I do expect after last week's
events with the economy that people are leery again. Maybe you can contact
the costuming events for some stats. I know Comic-Con was a huge success
last month. Dragon*Con is expecting between 35,000 to 50,000 people over
Labor Day weekend. If I get to go to Dragon*Con, I will let you know. I
didn't notice any change in the amount of people at Costume-Con for the past
three years...but the people in the know are on h-costume. Maybe they can
chime with their stats.

As for those of us who have costuming businesses, especially online, it is
always a race to keep up with what is IN OUT. We always have to reinvent
the wheel to stay afloat. At this moment, the social media seems to be the
way to go.

As for sewing...it is the #1 hobby for women this past year.

This was on the news during the past six months. I don't recall the actual
source. I was just surprised to hear this.

It's not just the cons, it's the battles and other big reenactment
events. I hear people saying they are not going to as many as before.

I don't know about your location but in my area of Virginia, I have to pick
and choose which reenactments to go to...there are so many through
Christmas. There are several in a single weekend. I would never have to
travel more than 60 miles. And then they start up again in April. Our
small local historical society put on a haunted mansion tour last Halloween
season with actual stories of murders and Civil War events. They got the
history students at the university involved with guiding the tours.
Reenactors are all over the grounds telling their stories as the groups are
guided by lantern light. My group was about in tears at one of the Civil
War battle scenes. This event was so successful that this event is
preformed bi-monthly and people come from all over to see it.

Blandford Cemetery, in Petersburg, VA tried this same type of event but it
was not effective...all I could think was, I want some hot chocolate! It
wasn't as believable as our hististorical where you couldn't get enough of
the stories and never thought about how cold it was. Recently, we went to
the new Sailor's Creek Battlefield State Park. No reenactors, but one
ranger toured through home that became the union's hospital. The ranger was
so good that the group hung on her every word and stayed after her talk for
more info. I can't wait to see what they do for 150th Anniversary. Most of
the reenactments here are well attended by reenactors and audience even in
extreme weather. Our powwow season starts this month and they are very
well attended.

Our local reenactors stay very busy. It is not uncommon to see someone at
an event one weekend and see then in a different event period costume the
next weekend.

(from me.)As for those of us who have costuming businesses, especially
online,
it is always a race to keep up with what is IN OUT. We always have to
reinvent the wheel to stay afloat. At this moment, the social media
seems to be the way to go

What I am meaning is by how you keep in touch with your customers. Keeping
up with communication technology is key to any busy today. People want your
response ASAP. Everyone in my entire extended family has a cell phone and
texts with the exception of my blind deaf 76 y.o. mother texting. I read
FB family messages to her. My adult kids sit on FB chat all day via their
cell phones. A lot of people do this. I negotiated a contract last week via
text messages. I don't delete my text messages, so the conversation is
saved documented. Society has become so dependent on fast communication.

It is sad to say, but this year a lot of universities are going to only
online textbooks. This discussion has been going on for a while with
educators very upset about it. But it is the way of the future. The
academic powers-to-be want this. OTOH if it lowers the $1,000 textbook fees
per semester for students, I am all for it...I have three kids + two DIL in
college. Some other things that are OUT are CDs...good luck trying to find
a good selection. Most people go to the online outlets and download them.
DVDs are heading in the same direction with NetFlix and Hulu being so
popular. Three of my kids do not own TVs, they watch movies and TV shows on
their laptops or smart phones.

If I was tech savvy enough (and I am not), I would develop apps for
costuming. There you go...someone smart enough go for it! Just send me a
thank you card when you are rich! I love apps!

LynnD,

H-needlework was the other group that I joined at the same time as
h-costume. I just remembered that it was 1995 when I joined...my first
costume history course in college. I will forever be grateful to the
h-costume old-timers!

Fran,

I miss the vintage email list. Cat moved f-costume to yahoogroups. I
forgot that it is another email list that is active. You can find it at
