Re: [h-cost] Use of Fabrics?
A. Garden writes I've often looked at the fabrics at http://stores.ebay.com/Renaissance-Fabrics and wondered if anyone here had used them for Renaissance (general term) or Elizabethan garb? If so, what are your thoughts? I realise they are not natural fibres, but what did you think of the patterns? Do you have photos of finished gowns or doublets you might share with me? I've got some garments to make and am thinking about some of these fabrics. Hi, I just recently bought some brocade from this store for an elizabethan gown. The fabric is beautiful. The colors are vibrant and the pattern is great. I haven't finished the dress yet, so I don't have pictures, but as long as you know that the fabric isn't period correct I would go for it. Tania M. Bjarne, I think that if you market the bag to the right consumer, the price is good bargain. On the other hand it's going to seem expensive for the casual observer who doesn't understand all that it takes to make. Tania -Original Message- From: Susan B. Re: [h-cost] Hand fan silk handpainted
I'ts really hard to tell how bad the damage is by the pictures. If it's not too bad than it can be reinforced. If the damage is too bad, than yes, the sticks can be recovered as long as they're not cracked. If they are, you're better of leaving it as a display. [h-cost] Stomacher
I was recently made aware of the stomacher from some previous posts. I make Elizabethan costumes and though it isn't strictly period I am interested in learning more about them. I don't have the luxury of a ladies maid and this invention would definitely make getting dressed by oneself easier. Can anyone explain the workings of these, or possibly have a good picture of how they're attached and how they cover the laces? Re: [h-cost] Judging costume contest? Help!
What I've seen that works well for the public is to have someone announce that the contest is about to begin and that anyone interested should come up to stage. You can either have appointed judges or do the winner(s) by crowd applause. If you're worried about hurting someones feelings you can always have some sort of side prize such as most imaginative. Hope this helps. Our local Habitat for Humanity affiliate is having a theme party fundraiser, 20s/30s era, and is planning a costume contest. The tickets are sold to the general public and fancy dress is optional, so pretty much anything goes. We need help with the logistics of it. Should guests have to "sign up" for the contest, should we just choose someone from the crowd and announce it, how should we handle it? We really need to make it fun and so that no one's hurt or embarrassed. (These are guests who are donating $ and playing games, not a serious special interest group.) Re: [h-cost] Buying a costume business
I don't know much about the costume business, but in business in general the first thing thing to learn is to never assume. Alway find out 100% and get it in writting. There are a lot of shady people out there. You're going to also want to inspect and document the condition of every costume so that you can reasearch what they're worth. You don't want to end up with one nice costume and 1999 crappy ones. Re: [h-cost] reminder -- 2006 H-COST Holiday Gift Exchange
Hi Dawn, My name is Tania Pembroke. I would love to participate in the gift exchange. I live in Coral Springs, Florida and have a husband named Jerry and three children of the furry variety. I am a Jazzercise Instructor by trade. I am interested in all periods, but so far have only worked with the Elizabethan period due to that being the only reenactment opportunities in this area. My mailing address is as follows. Tania Pembroke 9811 Westview Dr. #914 Coral Springs, Florida 33076 Thanks for putting this opportunity together. Tania Tania M. Dawn Welcome to the 2006 H-COST Holiday Gift Exchange. **PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE MESSAGE CAREFULLY BEFORE RESPONDING*** Please DO NOT reply to the List. Please address all replies to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Be sure to add my email to your spam filter so that I can reply to you with your exchange information. Please leave the H-COST header intact in your reply so your message does not end up in the spam-trap. If the phrase "H-COST" does not appear in your subject line I will not get your message. _What we're doing. _ We will be exchanging small costume and sewing related gifts with each other. To participate you must sign up (below). There are rules, so that everybody knows what is expected of them, but I want this to be fun so I am keeping the rules simple. If you want to participate, please read this entire message. The Sign-up Deadline is October 14. The Mailing Deadline is Dec.8th. We're starting earlier based on feedback from last year. Sometime after Oct 14 I will begin sending people their assignments. That's a crazy week for me, so don't panic if I'm a little late. :) _The Rules._ 1. You are responsible for completing your end of the exchange on time. Please be sure you can follow through on your committment. 2. Gifts should be sewing or costume related. Gifts may be hand-made for the recipient, or purchased, or may be items you already have. Gifts should be clean and in good condition and suitable for giving. You will be given guidelines to help you choose a gift for your recipient. 3. Gifts should be in the $10-$15 US range, and no more than that. (8-12 euros). It's ok if you can get something on sale or make something from supplies you already have. Second-hand books in good condition are ok. We all know how many desireable but out-of-print titles are out there. 4. Please wrap your gift item. Last year many participants said they would like the gift to be a surprise, and will wait to open it. You do not have to use seasonal holiday paper, plain tissue or pretty fabric is just fine. 5. Plan to mail your gift early. Remember that it will cost you postage on top of what you spent on the gift. Small and lightweight objects are generally cheaper to mail. If you are mailing overseas you may have to fill out a Customs Declaration. 6. After the sign-up period I will create a list of all participants so that I can stay in touch with you and send reminders. Email should be addressed to me, or to this list and not to H-Cost. 7. Each person who joins will be randomly matched up with one person they will send a gift to. I will try not to match you with the same person as last year. Someone else will send a gift to you. For example, Ann will send to Bob. Bob will send to Clara. Clara will send to Ann. This way each person will meet two H-Costumers by giving and receiving. You will know who you are sending to, but not who is sending to you. _Join Now!_ 1. To join you must send me your name and mailing address. Please reply to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and NOT to the H-Cost list. The sign-up period ends Oct 14. 2. Introduce yourself. Tell me a little bit about you, your family, your pets, what you do -- as much as you feel comfortable sharing. It's been suggested that you include your dress size. 3. Tell me some of your Favorite Things. What do you sew? What time period or place interests you? Is there a favorite technique or process that you enjoy? (weaving, dyeing, embroidery, etc.) Do you have a favorite color or theme? 4. If you live outside the US and know your Duty limit, please include it. If you are within the US and do not wish to mail to another country, please let me know. I think that about covers it. If you have questions or concerns, please ask.
