Obviously I could put all of my photos and music on the old drive, and all of my videos on the new drive, and mount them separately - but from previous experience I've found that gets very difficult very quickly, as drives fill up and you end up with categories split between drives. Does anyone have any ideas for how to go about this? Ideally I'd like whatever method it is to not require completely wiping my current drive - it would be possible (if I can find a friend with an empty 2Tb external hard drive that I can borrow), but it'd be a bit of a pain. You need LVM (Logical Volume Management) to combine drives of different sizes. Yes, it was your talk I referred to. :) I never expected so many would be interested as I assumed everyone would have that knowledge already or know how to access it easily. It really challenged my assumptions. But I thought I would try a talk and see what happens. Afterwards, quite a few people said they had learned something new. Exactly, which underlines the point. If you're using Linux, and are concerned for your local machine's data, it would probably be better to encrypt your partitions rather than rely on some tool to lock the stable door. Encrypted partitions don't suffer from the flaws of remote wipe software. - no accidental wipes - no need for the machine to be online to receive a signal - no risk of drives being slaved to other machines I quite agree Michael, but at the moment encryption is not what they are looking to do. [Hampshire] USB Trackball not detected at power on
Hi all, I'm experiencing some weirdness with my Logitech USB trackball. I've had it for a few years and it's worked fine. Recently, it's started not being detected when I power on the machine. This isn't an X problem: Nothing is shown in lsusb and nothing appears in dmesg. If I unplug and re-plug the trackball, it works straight away. Both Ubuntu 11.10 and Fedora 16 (Live CD) exhibit this behaviour. It is a recent behaviour, nothing else has changed in the system. The trackball is connected to the rear USB sockets of my PC. Other devices plugged in to the rear USB sockets are not affected: USB sound device, USB hard disks, USB graphics tablet. I suspected a hardware fault, but have bought a new trackball and it exhibits the same problem. There are two front USB sockets and they also seem to exhibit the same behaviour, but less consistently. Any ideas? [Hampshire] Replacing home server with a Linux NAS device?
Hi, I might have to replace my home server due to a hardware failure. It's a Tranquil PC unit which I chose because it has accessible disk bays and runs pretty quietly. I have been looking at a few options online but most microservers are sold on their size rather than noise. However, NAS devices look like a good option but I'm not sure which of them either run Linux or can be easily hacked to do so. The requirements are: 1) Low power. As low as possible, ideally 20-30W. 2) Quiet. Ideally fanless. 3) SSH access for remote rsync backups. 4) 3TB storage. Ideally I would be able to reuse the 4 existing data 1TB disks I have in a software RAID5 configuration. 5) Can run Ubuntu or Debian. Would be nice: 6) Small. 7) USB connection for printer. I've looked at Synology and ReadyNAS products but any recommendations would be gratefully received. It is much better for the central device to decide when to switch from one AP to another. Oh, sorry, you've already answered that. I find the above assertion odd at first reading: could you explain why you believe that to be true? Because the behaviour of wireless clients is usually to maintain the connection to the existing AP, even if the signal strength drops (i.e. you move away from it) and there are stronger APs with the same SSID closer or with a stronger signal. The controller is clever enough to work that out and disconnect the client from the first AP causing the client to look for a stronger signal. The central controllers also manage channel allocation, can compensate for failed APs by altering power of the remaining ones and even counteract rogue APs. Pretty clever stuff. If you have a hub or switch in Room A, then you can use your second set up. The hub or switch will provide the connectivity for Room B as well as for any devices located in Room A. If that isn't acceptable for whatever reason then you will need to use your first set up. I've had all sorts of different stories from local aerial installers who are happy to drill the holes but not sure of the wiring! Last question: one bloke told me I can't run the cables outside without fitting some sort of lightning rod at each end costing hundreds of quid - surely this is wrong? At least - ntl engineer who did exactly this at my old house didn't mention it when he did precisely the same job! Running cables outside the building increases the risk of EM interference (be it from lightning or whatever), but I don't believe it is a legal requirement. There is rugged Cat5e made for running outside buildings. [Hampshire] OggCamp 11 - it's (nearly) in Hampshire this year!
Hullo fellow HantLUGgers! We (Ubuntu UK Podcast Linux Outlaws) have just announced that we'll be holding another OggCamp this year. If you've not heard of it, it's the biggest and best free (as in beer) community-run FLOSS event in the UK! OggCamp 11 will be held on the 13th 14th August at Farnham Maltings [0] in Surrey and it's free to attend. Details are on our website [1]. We have put the basics about the event up on the site, and will add more information as we have it, including travel and accommodation info. As with last year's event we'll have a few rooms available for people to give talks about things that interest them. The event isn't specifically about Free Software or indeed Linux, but it does lean heavily in that direction. If you'd like to talk about something that interests you, do come along, grab a slot and rock on. We're actively looking for sponsors of the event, so if you know any groups/companies who might be interested, do throw them our way. Contact details on the site [1]. Although entrance is free we'd ask that people sign up at Eventbrite so we can get an idea of numbers ahead of time. If you later find you can't make it, do let us know so we can release the ticket. We'll be announcing more details over the coming months on both Linux Outlaws [3] and the Ubuntu UK Podcast [4], and of course we'll update the main site [1] too. Interestingly this option isn't set on the DHCP scope, but neither is it set on another DHCP scope on the same server (served to a separate VLAN by a DHCP relay) which works fine. * Somehow ensure (and this is where I'm uncertain how you might do it) that this option gets relayed by your DHCP relay setup. I'm running dhcp3-relay with the -a option, which AFAICT passes extra information along with the DHCP request. Please seriously consider using dhcpd instead.
