Re: [HCDX] Computer DX logging

2003-08-14 Thread Brian Hill
DXing is not logging on to someone else's computer via the internet. DXing
is
setting up your own ant., feedline, receiver and dealing with all the
problems that arise in your location. Not benefiting from someone else's
hard work. Theres more to DXing than turning on a radio. The main reason
stations give QSLs is to obtain reception reports from your location not
someone else's. At least it used to be the reward for accurate reports. At
this rate we wont need radios just computers.

some internet listening and reporting (Radio Prague,

AOK, sometimes it is lousy, as in the El Salvador case
related in DXLD #3118. I don't feel ashamed at all to
say that I have received several replies, usually by
email, but also by letter, in some cases QSL cards,
 pens and other stuff.

I don't see any harm in doing this as long as you are honest about doing it,
as Henrik is. It depends what you want out of the hobby. Some people,
including a well-known gentleman down under, insist that DXing is a
technical hobby and that comments on programmes etc. have no place in it.
But for many people, the technical part was always a means to an end - i.e.
receiving audio from as many different broadcasters as possible. I'm sure
the small Latin American broadcasters who stream on the Web are as delighted
to get letters from Internet listeners abroad as they are to get reception
reports on their radio signals. Potential advertisers will be impressed
either way :-)

[HCDX] SIDC Weekly Space Weather Bulletin

2003-08-14 Thread Thomas Giella KN4LF
:Issued: 2003 Aug 12 1100 UTC
:Product: documentation at http://sidc.oma.be/products/bul
SIDC Weekly bulletin on Solar and Geomagnetic activity
WEEK 136 from 2003 Aug 04

SOLAR ACTIVITY
--
Solar activity was rather low this week, with just a single M-flare on Aug 05 from
Catania sunspot group 90 (NOAA 0424). Even C-flares were only occasionally observed,
totaling about 10, with several days having no C-flares at all. Most of this smaller
scale activity also originated from sunspot group 90 and its close neighbor, Catania
sunspot group 88 (NOAA 0425). Sunspot group 90 was the biggest group visible, reaching
a maximum size of nearly 0.08% of the disk, distributed over 2 large spots and about
20 smaller ones. It had strong magnetic fields with clear polarity mixing for nearly
the whole week, so it clearly did not live up to its full flaring potential. Towards
the end of the week, another large and complex sunspot group, Catania 96 (NOAA 0431)
rotated
over the eastern solar limb, producing C-flare activity so far.

A northern hemisphere coronal hole rotated across the visible solar disk this week.
The leading edge reached the central meridian on Aug 4. This coronal hole had two
clearly separated equatorial extensions, the first of which became geo-effective on
Aug 6.

Several prominence eruptions were observed during the week, but none produced an
Earth-directed CME.

GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY

Geomagnetic conditions were quiet on the first two days of the week, when the solar
wind speed was decreasing in the aftermath of a coronal hole passage. It reached a
minimum of just above 400km/s on Aug 05. Early on Aug 06, an equatorial extension of a
northern hemispheric coronal hole started to influence the geomagnetic environment.
The solar wind speed increased in three phases, reaching a maximum of nearly 800km/s
in the morning of Aug 8, following which it started to gradually decrease (almost
linearly), reaching 550km/s by the end of the week. During most of this period, the
interplanetary magnetic field was mainly oriented towards the north, except for a
short interval early on Aug 6 and a second one starting at about noon on Aug 7,
lasting about 24 hours. During these two intervals, and especially during the latter
one, minor geomagnetic storm conditions were reported. On Aug 7, the K-index in Wingst
reached an isolated peak of 7, being mostly at 5 before and after.!
During the last two days of the week, the IMF was northwards and geomagnetic
conditions remained quiet.

I heard it a few days ago around the same time using my SONY ICF 7600D rec. and the

BTW does any one have the current schedule of VOM as it is inaudible here these days.

[HCDX] Zapatistas Indeed on the Air!

2003-08-14 Thread Gary Crites

Free Speech Radio News from New York via KMUE FM Eureka reported last night that the
Zapatistas did indeed go on shortwave this weekend and was soon met with some I guess
government jamming of pop music and another announcer.

I don't know if what I heard was them but they were on the air. I did not hear them
last night though.

Re: [HCDX] RCI BC Relay Station - tail wagging dog?

2003-08-14 Thread Mike Brooker

Well, it will not be a hoax if such a proposal is approved in Cabinet.
The (ruling) Liberal Party is in need of votes from the western provinces,
 in an extreme way.
There are almost no Liberal seats in the western provinces. [West of
 Ontario]

I don't think the promise of a new RCI relay site site would do much to
garner Liberal votes, in the next election to be held sometime in 2004 or
early 2005 after Paul Martin succeeds Jean Chrétien (it's an extremely
foregone conclusion that Mr. Martin will become the next Prime Minister).
Most Canadians don't even know that RCI exists. Even as a job creation
project, the number of new jobs generated would be negligible. If this
isn't a hoax and the transmitter were built in one of the few B.C. ridings
held by the Liberals, it would be seen as a payoff or kickback for sending a
Liberal MP to Ottawa.

I wonder if this site was created by a former CBC/Radio-Canada staffer, with
an axe to grind against a former employer.. Financially-strapped CBC has
been laying off people hand over fist.

COMMENT: Geomagnetic conditions are quiet. The solar wind velocity has decayed
to 560 km/s and is slowly decreasing further. For the next days geomagnetic
conditions should remain quiet. Various C-flares have occurred in group 96 (NOAA

RE: [HCDX] Is Computer Logging DX?

2003-08-14 Thread Marcelo Toniolo

Last year I had a disagreement with Glenn Hauser about exactly the same
subject.
On that occasion someone from USA sent Gleen a message saying he had got
a verification (QSL) from Liechtenstein. I thought Radio Liechtenstein
was on Shortwave but for my frustration Glenn told me that this DX er
had heard the station over the Internet.

Well, I still consider QSL'ing a radio station over the WEB something
stupid. If RNZI wants to reply this message I would suggest them to
send an email QSL confirming the WEB DX or whatever you want to call
it.

If we start accepting this kind of thing we could find ourselves in a
ridiculous situation where the radio will virtually disappear and will
be replaced by a computer. If this is the case, how about if I start
reporting and QSL'ing TV stations that I catch on Cable ?

Radio New Zealand International have recently received a Reception
report requesting a QSL from an Internet logging on a Pentium 4
Computer.
It raises some interesting points on whether logging a station is
really DX and worth a QSL?

Any genuine feedback or comment will be passed on to Radio NZ
International

Hi Mark

RNZI has received this reception report requesting a QSL. As you will
see
the receiver was a Pentium 4 1.7 ghz. computer - I had a chuckle about
it,
but the guy is quite serious. I would be interested to know from the
amateur
community what they think?

My view is a QSL card was intended to acknowledge the expertise of an
operator of a short-wave radio in hearing a distant station. Surely
clicking
on a URL does not count??!!

Some may call me old fashioned, but I would appreciate feed-back on
this
issue!

Cheers

Some may call me old fashioned, but I would appreciate feed-back on
this
issue!

[HCDX] Radio Sudan and Riyadh?

2003-08-14 Thread Gloria R. Lalumia
This morning, August 12 at 1708 I picked up a station on 15435 that
sounded Mideastern, and I thought it might be Greek.
Checking the listings at EIBI, I came up with this: 1600-1800 ARS
BSKSA1 to Europe from Riyadh!

Then at 1718, I picked up 17660. I caught the tail end of a male
newsreader delivering a story on floods in English. It was clear as a
bell! He finished and the station ID w as Sudan Radio Service and they
said they would go to Arabic (this was about 17:20.)A different male
voice came on. The signal was fading and it got much noisier. I turned
back at 1730 to hear a female voice announce You are listening to the
Sudan Radio Service in English. The signal then got much weaker and
there was lots of noise.

EIBI has this info: Sudan 1700-1800 M-F CLA OTI Vn SUD 17660
I am not sure what the codes mean What is ITU (the CLA code is for
that)..the station is OTI? Language was Vn? Certainly not Vietnamese!!

Considering I never get anything in from the ME, this was a really
oustanding morning here in New Mexico!!

[HCDX] LA notes

2003-08-14 Thread Karel Honzik
Hi,

last week I heard several times a very weak signal on 4830.6 kHz around 0400 UTC.
Always a man talking but could not find out more as the signal has been fading out
for the day...
At that time there was no signal of Radio Litoral, HDN on 4832 kHz.
This morning (9 AUG) Radio Litoral was on again on its usual 4832 kHz with a fair
signal after 0400. Nothing heard on 4830.6, but it was quite late after 0400...

Radio Quito, EQA observed active this morning (9 AUG) on 4919 kHz around 0400 UTC
after a longer time of absence.

Radio Bandeirantes, Brazil is off-channel on all of its SW frequencies:
6089.97 9645.86 11925.65 kHz
It was funny: the 31 mb outlet has been keeping this frequency for a long time, but
now, as if they knew somebody was meassuring it, on the next day they drifted a bit
down to 9645.33 kHz :-)

GOOD DX,

2003-08-14 Thread Andy Sennitt
Picked up Sudan again this morning on 17630 at 1600. At 1614 the
signal went compleatly dead. I waited for almost one and a half
minutes was about to give up when back on they came! British
Transmitters? They're having some problems so if you don't hear
them at first wait! They switch to 17660 (not 17600) at 1700.
Rather nice to hear! Great music!

In order not to confuse people who haven't been following the story, please
do not use phrases like picked up Sudan when this is not what you mean.
This is a station broadcasting *to* Sudan, not from it.

Andy.

Hello Gloria,

GRL Then at 1718, I picked up 17660. I caught the tail end of a male
GRL newsreader delivering a story on floods in English. It was clear as a
GRL bell! He finished and the station ID w as Sudan Radio Service and they
GRL said they would go to Arabic (this was about 17:20.)A different male
GRL voice came on. The signal was fading and it got much noisier. I turned
GRL back at 1730 to hear a female voice announce You are listening to the
GRL Sudan Radio Service in English. The signal then got much weaker and
GRL there was lots of noise.

GRL EIBI has this info: Sudan 1700-1800 M-F CLA OTI Vn SUD 17660
GRL I am not sure what the codes mean What is ITU (the CLA code is for
GRL that)..the station is OTI? Language was Vn? Certainly not Vietnamese!!

CLA is clandestins an Vn Vernaculars i.e a language spoken in Sudan.
Sources say Sudan Radio Service is using txs in GB.
Hope that helps.

I posted it on rec.radio.shortwave, and it was also heard in Michigan, but

You can hear the audio clip here:

Sounds like a spur of Radio Marti from somewhere. The ident is weak, but
fairly certain.

[HCDX] RCI BC Relay Station - tail wagging dog? -- Not a former SRC/ CBC staffer, I can confirm that!

2003-08-14 Thread mhev
The RCI BC Relay Station site was not created by a former SRC / CBC staffer!
This I know with 100% certainty.

In any case, you cannot choose a relay station sites by the politics of
local ridings -- that is very bad SW engineering!
Vancouver Island + Sunshine Coast offer AN ALL SEA PATH TO THE TARGET AREAs,
this is worth its weight in gold ... aka saved transmission costs.

RNZI is adequate proof of this, even though it is not on the sea directly.

Email:
[EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] ... as they have more facts on this
than I do.
Request that they do a news story on it -- the person making the proposal
lives in Seattle.

Subject: Re: [HCDX] RCI BC Relay Station - tail wagging dog?

Well, it will not be a hoax if such a proposal is approved in Cabinet.
The (ruling) Liberal Party is in need of votes from the western
provinces,
in an extreme way. There are almost no Liberal seats in the western
provinces. [West of

If this
isn't a hoax and the transmitter were built in one of the few B.C. ridings
held by the Liberals, it would be seen as a payoff or kickback for sending
a
 Liberal MP to Ottawa.

I wonder if this site was created by a former CBC/Radio-Canada staffer,
with
an axe to grind against a former employer.. Financially-strapped CBC has
been laying off people hand over fist.

[HCDX] RCI BC Relay Station - tail wagging dog?

Well, it will not be a hoax if such a proposal is approved in Cabinet.
The (ruling) Liberal Party is in need of votes from the western provinces,

There are almost no Liberal seats in the western provinces. [West of

The CBC and RCI cannot 'crush' the proposal too much -- that would be like a
dog eating its master's hand!
In a matter of speaking, they would be better off hiring the person with the
proposal -- discreetly.

Also:
RNZI's budget increase [to allow it to run 168 hours / week] is in line with
NZ not being in the favor of the US ruling class.
For such a small nation, SW broadcasting is (for all practical purposes)
part of the National Defense Budget Allocation.
It is a shame RCI did not construct a relay station similar to the one
proposed in 1990, so that Canada could make its power felt over this vast
region.

This BC Relay station website is a HOAX

CBC are investigating the person or persons who have put up the web site

If you check out http://cbc.am/ you will see that you can buy the
cbc.am domain name if you want. The Country 'am' is actually Armenia

It is a really weird site and nothing to do with the real CBC whose
 web address is

It just looks like a good April Fools joke.

Radio Canada International, BC Relay Station.

 http://CBC.am/rci-bc.htm

For covering Australasia, it seems that an HR 4 / 3 / 1 is recommended,
at
 500 kw.
RCI could literally overpower RNZI or Radio Australia if the proper
 frequencies were chosen.

 -- text --

 Technical Note
The city of Esquimalt, BC was chosen as a transmitter site for software
related reasons. The final location for the RCI relay station is not set
in
stone, as there are many factors that will affect the final placement of
this relay station. It is expected that Tofino, Bella Bella, Masset or
other
coastal BC cities could be chosen for the relay station (s).

The reasons for other sites to be chose are based on the following
varibles:

 - geography : all sea path to Asia Pacific, a requirement with respect to
 reducing transmitter output power requirements

 - geology : swampy or near swampy conditions (for high HF reflectivty),
near
zero (1 in 750 years) tsunami risk, minimal eartquake / rockfall / land
slippage or any other related geological risks, no tall moutains to
interfere with signal transmission path ...

 - electrical : electrisity supply (a 500 kw transmitter needs ~ 1.25
megawatts to run at full power), avoidance of population centres (to
comply
with IEEE and EBU recommendations on exposure to EM fields)

 - accessability and defensibiliy of transmitter site (s) with respect to
paved roads, useful for staff morale -- nearby urban centres have more
 services

 - land easily donatable by BC or Federal gouverment, not subject to any
onging first nations land claims processes

Secondary relay station sites : Kitimaat, BC suggests itself for
targeting
the Russian Far East, China and other parts of North Asia.

All of these computations assume that an ALLISS transmission system is
used.
ALLISS only requires 15 ha per module. One ALLISS module could solve 60 %
of
RCI's transmission needs in the Asia Pacific, and Latin American regions.

However, the ALLISS system lacks the directivity of a multi-segmented
curtan
 array.

A second relay station some distance (100+ kms) away that would possess:

 1 x HRS 12 / 6 / 1 (9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 21 mhz) to North Asia
 1 x HRS 12 / 6 / 1 (7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 mhz) to Latin America

Such a relay station would increase directivity and audibiliy in these
regions by 12 db or more, when compared to HRS 4 / 4 / 1 antenna systems.

I nsted of it i can consider DXing , using a java radio , or better a

[HCDX] LOG Litohoro part 1

2003-08-14 Thread Zacharias Liangas
Helo all .
Returned from a vacation from Litohoron and will again leave for trip to island . I
here submit a very lengthy list of logs made the period of 26.7 to 7.8 in 3 parts
.
*First part logs inside the valley house with various radios including LOWE
HF150and Philips D2935 with 4 m wire and Kchibo C300 with its own
antenna or sporadically very close to a metal frame mesh
*Second part reception on with battery operated LOWE 150 and ca 7 m wire
( same as used in the house)
*Third part in the house inside Litohoron with same wire , tilted 15 degs
The only problem encountered is with solar powered system and the two power
inverters used to coinvert the current from 12 to 220 V . The smaller inverter of
400 W nearly blocks out all HF bands

2003-08-14 Thread Glenn Hau-ser
Yes, I recall we had the RCI-West Coast and BBC-Falklands hypothetical stuff
in DXLD some time ago. And much longer ago, I recall that RCI briefly
carried out some tests from the PTP SW facility near Vancouver --- now, what
was it called? Canadian Overseas Telecommunications Corp., I think.

RE: [HCDX] Is Computer Logging DX?

2003-08-14 Thread Anker Petersen
Dear DX-friends,

This subject was discussed three years ago at the Conference of the
European DX Council in Barcelona and there was general agreement
that WEB LISTENING cannot be regarded as DX-ING. It is another
hobby which just requires that you know certain web addresses. The
stations are no more distant than your PC.

Last year I had a disagreement with Glenn Hauser about exactly the same

Subject: [HCDX] Is Computer Logging DX?

Some may call me old fashioned, but I would appreciate feed-back on
 this
 issue!

 Cheers

[HCDX] Radio La Luz network in Peru

2003-08-14 Thread Henrik Klemetz
NCN S.A. is the name of the company owning at least 35
local outlets of Radio La Luz, most of which appear to
be on local programming, pending start of satellite
feed from Lima, says Richard Juárez Cruz, who is the
manager of the station on 1390 kHz, which was recently
heard in the UK.

The NCN S.A. AM stations listed by the Peruvian
Frequency Authority (cf. list from Peruvian
Radiodifusion.com at http://www.sover.net/~hackmohr/)
are as follows (all are 1 kW, and none of them can be
found in WRTH 2003):

640 OAX1Y Chiclayo *
700 OBU4J Huancayo
950 OAU5K Ayacucho
1020 OBU1D Piura
1170 OBX8M Iquitos
1220 OAU5U Ica
1240 OAU3C Chimbote
1390 OAU2Z Trujillo
1410 OBU7A Juliaca
1410 OBU1H Tumbes
1490 OBU4N Chaupimarca (Pasco)

Radio La Luz flagship station, OAU4I, with streaming
audio on the net
http://www.radiolaluz.com/m_radio.php
is on 1080 with a power of 10 kW. Owners are mentioned
as Santa Carolina S.A.

A separate programme, apparently audible in parts of
metropolitan Lima, is Radio Bendición, OAU4Q, 2.5 kW
on 1340 kHz. The QTH is given as Pucusana, Lima. Per
the frequency list this station is (or perhaps was?)
owned by Radio Colonial S.A.

* Per info heard Aug. 5 on the streaming audio of
Lima’s Radio La Luz, the Chiclayo station will be
celebrating its 1st anniversary next weekend with a
big rally at the Plaza Elías Aguirre where things like
key rings and T-shirts will be given out to the crowd.
