[HCDX] HELP: AMC-8 1540 heard in CT

2013-11-30 Thread Konnie Rychalsky
Hi folks, After a lengthy hiatus, I'm back with a head scratcher:

For the first time, on Nov 22 ( 23) heard on 1540 kHz at 0754-UTC on an
analog clock-radio a loop consisting of a tone/message: This is Westwood
One Radio Network's A-M-C-8 Transponder 23; To authorize your receiver
contact c. I may have heard it also on the 24th, but not sure.
Didn't hear it afterwards or since then. The recording on the 22nd (of 45
minutes) had two good strong peaks, and the final fade was pretty much the
depth plunge, under KXEL WABE mix.

Help!!! Who, what, where and why? Any links would surely help and greatly
appreciated.
Konnie Rychalsky, SW CT

[HCDX] 530 CUBA ?????

2009-12-15 Thread Konnie Rychalsky

Information appreciated... Call? Location?

530 CM?? CUBA Havana assumed Nov 28+++, 0300; Rarely reported, yet
frequently heard here VG signal... Throughout November December, have noted
YL with EZ mx, many US pop tune instrumentals, usually heard well from -
0400 UTC. Signal is not from the 530 Canadian outlet with foreign language
programming (and direction 90 degrees from the Cuban signal.) Information
appreciated... Call? Location?

Oddly enough, I have not seen this one mentioned in any Bogdan Chiochiu Pan-Am
reports. Only other mentions were Glenn Hauser's DX Listening Digest June 6,
2005 in a drive by; and mention in Crystal Radio contest from at least two
years ago.

There, something so rare, it's official... a log of this station. (Konnie
Rychalsky, Connecticut Dec 15, 2009)

[HCDX] LRA36 into New England

2009-10-08 Thread Konnie Rychalsky

Antarctica 15476 LRA36 Oct 8, 2009 2038-2103 UTC; Noting signal weak but
trying to gain strength, switched to USB, and checking 1 kHZ above and below,
tone clearly pointed to this freq. Just barely heard at times: talk by OM
2057, song at 2059, and signal off at 2103. Encouraging that first time heard
here in S CT on a DX-440 without external antenna; will have to monitor over
next few days. (Konnie Rychalsky, CT)

[HCDX] 480 kHZ

2009-04-06 Thread Konnie Rychalsky

One for the writers… On last week’s episode (March 30) of “24” (Fox, Monday 9
PM ET):

Insider informant Greg Seaton, calling from inside the Starkwood compound,
requests Presidential immunity in exchange for the location of WMDs. After
agreeing on a rendezvous point, F.B.I. Director Larry Moss instructs him: “See
if you can get a hand-held radio; we’ll be on 480 kilohertz.”

Saga continues tonight. (Konnie Rychalsky)

in FF, perhaps Nx. Followed w/Dance mx. 0545 ID and AA lang chng. YL w/nx
TOH. Signal fading to poor at this tx.

After noticing excellent copy of NDBs below 530, and following Bogdan
Chiochiu’s reports on LW, thought I’d check-and-heard faint-poor 162-France,
the only signal I’ve ever heard here. Caught my attention, and perhaps at the
right time, was increasing signal strength on 171.
Usually see listed 162-France and 189-Iceland reports, but can’t recall Radio
Medi. Very pleased to record this one; my first LW good enough for a report.
I’m excited: There’s still hope afterall for owners of low end rcvrs i.e.
DX-440 and 100 ft wire indoors, tangled on floor albeit. (Konnie Rychalsky, SW

[HCDX] CT(Yule)LOG 081229

2008-12-29 Thread Konnie Rychalsky

Konnie’s CT(Yule)LOG 081229
** USA-MN, KSTP (pres), 1500, Sun Dec 28 2338-UTC.
Caught my attention first was the anncr-less Christmas songs this late in the
season, in a foreign language albeit, and then a Sunday program preacher in
it's null. Much needed KSTP never reached level long enough for signif detail,
quick spurts of a sec or two once in awhile. Coincidently, my daughter drove
home and walking thru the door asked where does Radio Olympus on 1500 come
from? That answered the language question, WTWP-DC with Greek programming.

EE Anncmnt 2349, We interrupt regular programming on Federal News Radio to
bring you this [wait for it...] special sports presentation on 15-00 and 8-20
AM. Washington Capitols Hockey pgrm - retiring of #11 Mike Gardner after ten
years. I knew the Christmas songs, in any language, were too good to last
(Washington stomps Christmas!) Gave up KSTP after an hour - never fails, just
as you start recording, the signal is never what it was when you first heard
it. (Konnie Rychalsky, SW CT)

** USA-NH, WGIR, 930, Mon Dec 29 0942-UTC.
Z-DX or snooze while recording DX, found five (six?) stations, fighting it
out before sunrise, in stereo*. Presumed WHLM-PA (sounded like WHMO or LO) w/
Christmas songs quick into fade, and two stations carrying Coast-to-Coast with
echo, WBEN-NY one of them. Two other stations exchanging stage, one with early
'50s oldies format but never got an ID. Just before end of tape, another ID
heard: WGIR Sports.

Not so fast, Santa...there is no WGI-R on 930, come to find out. WGIR is on
610 from NH. A quick search of stations with call letters WGI-*, it was
interesting to find instead a WGI-N on 930, and also from NH, and a WGI-P on
1540, and again - also from NH. Simple logical deduction, all three freqs as
assumed are listed in WGIR logo, www.wgiram.com along with am930wgin.com. Also
explains one Coast-to-Coast station heard, carried here. No clear or obvious
notation though that 930 carries 610, while 1540 a daytimer.

*Stereo recording made using two receivers, facing 40 and 290 degrees
respectively (L R channels) from here. Anyone who has read this far, and is
interested, and would like to hear a sample, I’ll send an mp3 attachment for
your interest, as long as you promise to listen with headsets!!! (Konnie

MD mention. (Konnie Rychalsky, SW CT)

NC - W(S)IC - 1520 Feb 3, 08; no sign of WTRI-MD at this hour (sign off at
midnight local?) but ran after two unIDs from 0544 to 0900 when an ID was
caught in between WWKB silent seconds: 1400 and 1520 W(F)IC and
Fox Sports Radio. New for me - the over 3 hours of tape paid off. At times
signal equal to WWKB here. The UnID remains a UnID. (Konnie Rychalsky,
SW CT)

Dave Faulkner, what a coinsidence reading your catch of same station a day
later, following the Super Bowl. Their web page denotes News/Talk/Sports
Station, although I don't see Fox noted, their programing lists FOX radio
talk show hosts. I'm putting in my C for your T and your S for my F
and I get WSIC. It works.

Yes it's Ranchero mx. Correction... my previous la voz is instead la rossa
(the rose?). This thing sounded even closer than MD, perhaps the neighbor and
his stereo again. I have a very nice TOH recording... Glen Hausser, you there?

 Konnie Rychalsky wrote:

 hearing this?

A bunch of us heard it last night. I thought there was a Spanish station
 down in MD.
Anyway, it was Mexican music...Rachero, I think.
Nobody has definitely IDed it yet.

[HCDX] 770 SS HELP

2007-10-24 Thread Konnie Rychalsky

Thanks John,
I have arm-chair level recording, and there were two SS stations. Wouldn't you
know it, just when you want an ID, signals fade into the mud, hiding behind
WABC [ chicken ], but I was able to hear twice the station chimed jingle,
both at TOH, sort of like a taxis horn or short hat dance song. Sound familiar
to anyone on the list? Thanks.

I had this last week and I think it was the Colombian. There were ads and
other promos, which would pretty much rule out Cuba. I made a recording
of it but it was inconclusive. But I'm pretty sure what i had last week was
 not Cuba.

And it was putting in a monster signal, burying WABC at times.

Subject: [IRCA] This Morning on 990
Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2007 09:01:55 -0500

I had a problem with 990 WNTP's antenna controller at pattern change this
morning, so we were off the air from 0715-0840. On my way in to fix the
problem I had a chance to see what could be heard on 990 with WNTP off.

Received CKGM in Montreal between 0805-0830 with a very good signal and
little, if any, fading. I was surprised to get them so well during the
day
(albeit during critical hours), although I know at night they sometimes
kick

our butt locally.

Radio Republica-1620 was WDHP US Virgin Islands. R Republica is listed on
the RMI-Radio Miami International webpage, and was mentioned at the top of
the hour just before the Miami address. Glenn had a handle on it - must be
from WRMI streamming. Signal went EE TOH ID as WDHP. Wow, this has been
a regular this year during this dx season, better than I can remember.

Thanks guys,

Re: [HCDX] Dxers Unlimited's weekend edition for 30-31 December 2006

2007-01-02 Thread Konnie Rychalsky
Dear Mr. Coro,

I have a question for you... If you truely are

your host here in Havana, now
ready to bring you short wave radio's most comprehensive radio hobby
program.. The one and only that tries really hard to cover all aspects
of this wonderful and fascinating hobby that you and I love...

then why is it that Cuban radio stations (non RHC) do not issue individually
specific QSL cards, since these stations are heard all over North America?
I have seen QSL cards that were issued up to the end of the 1950's,
however non after that. Why not? And if you are the pro so to speak
over there in Cuba, what influence do you really have to suggest to begin
to do so. Isn't there a radio club in all of Havana that can handle such a
task? Or how about yourself as the central point of contact - now wouldn't
that make great reporting on your weekly programs (as spoke person for
all reception reports for all Cuban radio verifications)?

I've been meaning to ask someone this question for 30 years. You're the
man.

after an absence of 20 years or so in BCB DXing... seems the sunspot cycle
is in favor:

1020 KCKN NM, Rosewell, QSL card in 14d for Test; this one was extremely
difficult
since nearby KDKA was in direct line of fire and no possible means to phase
out.
(K Rychalsky-CT)

1140  CHRB  AB, High River;  Letter with date/time  sticker after 11d;
nowhere
printed or mentioned call letters, only slogan Southern Alberta's Family
Radio Station.
Signed by the Office Administrater. What happened to C/E and GMs? Letter
mentions We are pleased to receive reception reports informing us of how
far our
signal carries. You'd think a QSL Card would be printed. I'll take the
letter, I guess.

From: benjamin pierce
Hi All:
If I'm Dxing out in the car, whenever it starts to hail I start getting
this
horrendous RF noise. It starts slowly as it starts to hail with pops and
clicks and then the noise increases in amplitude and frequency rapidly as
the hailstorm increases until it sounds like a buzzing sound like someone
running a high speed drill. Seems to be worse on lower frequencies with no
noise on FM. Does anyone know what this is?

Re: [HCDX] Is there anything particular about 5.9-6MHz

2005-09-30 Thread Konnie Rychalsky
Excellent article. I began SWL when in 1971 a portable AM/FM (FM totally
new to me back then) began to pick up SW stations in between the AM
stations...which was rather cool considering that I had just begun MW DXing.
I actually wrote to the SW stations with reception reports and it was then
that I realized, by the frequencies listed on the QSLs received, that these
stations were in the same area 5.9 - 6.+ mHz. For half a year, that was my
only window to SWL. On a very dry autum day, my under the kitchen cabinet
radio will pick up a station or two - usually VOA or CBC, last time I
listened. Perhaps the strangest dry radio was when, also back in the
70's, I ran a speaker wire between two floors and for the heck of it I wired
it to a recorder as a mic (cold war, James Bond, Man from U.N.C.L.E., you
know - spy flicks were in back then) and I noticed the meter jumping, so I
recorded it and when I played it back, it was CBC in the same meter band; I
remember that because it was reel to reel and I had to listen to about 90
minutes of tape for a freq.

Thanks for the article - this joggled some memories, as listed above.

Subject: [HCDX] Is there anything particular about 5.9-6MHz
Date: Fri, 30 Sep 2005 13:33:57 -0400

First, I'm in the southeast US (Piedmont Triad of North Carolina).

For about 8 months now I've been getting accidental reception of various
stations between 5.935 and a little above 6MHz, culminating in last night I
received simultaneously RTI (i think), radiochina (because of the www
identifier), Radio Sweden Stockholm, wwcr Tennesee (all of them I
identified
between 5.9 and 6.0MHz) and an unidentified station from Cuba (there is
probably one at around that).

This wouldn't be so interesting if it wasn't for the fact that I've
received
this in wildly different circumstances. First, I've gotten these exact
frequencies many times using various circuits and different antennas
(or
absence of).

In particular:
http://www.cimastudios.com/fdion/water.html#wr3
or for a recap of the past few months:
http://www.cimastudios.com/fdion/water.html

I also have constructed dry receivers with similar results (basically
similar in concept to foxhole radios without a tuning circuit).

Or thru a Radio-Shack mini amplified speaker. I've modified it for maximum
gain and to use as a VLF receiver, and apparently the signal goes thru the
C3198 transistor which acts as a detector. Different type of antennas
produce different signal strenght, always thru a floating ground. If I get
a
proper ground then I only get VLF. If I use a loop antenna, the same, just
VLF, no SW.

That's all fine and dandy, but why always these frequencies given there is
no tuner?? Surely there can be no correlation between all these various
accidental receptions. Yet, it is always those same stations that get
picked
up, around 6MHz.

Thanks,
Francois

[HCDX] QSL Question

QSL QUESTION:

ZAMBIA - R Christian Voice (Zambia) Ltd

to
R Christian Voice Chilie. Both very nice additions to country count
 at 121. (Connecticut-K Rychalsky 07/21/05)

Does anyone have a G.C. for this one? Zambia National BC is listed as 28E15
15S30 (WRTH '94 '00) which is Lusaka. The G.C. for R Christian Voice
(Lusaka) wasn't listed. Yet '00 map shows Kitwe site in red, which is
also listed under Zambia National BC MW service. (WRTH '94 shows Kitwe in
black, before Christian Voice.) So the question of the day is: does R
Christian Voice use Zambia National BC transmitters? If so, which one? If
not, then what? Lacking a current WRTH, any info appreciated before
contacting CE at Lusaka. TNX

coincidently...I was visiting just next door recently:

Talk show Program Coast to Coast; Very nice levels with strong peaks
and some nice IDs recorded; First time heard here in CT; WHKT-Portsmith

Re: [HCDX] [radiostamps]

2004-09-26 Thread Konnie Rychalsky
OK, as all know by now, these are NOT radio stamps, unless you want them
to be. They can be your dog stamps, your cat stamps, your classic car
stamps, or your radio-shack stamps... even your mug shot stamps. It's a
great idea to those who live in countries who offer the service. Imagine,
receiving ham qsls with call letters stamps... ouch, be careful who you
send your digital photo to

I received two sheets of stamps last year from JAPAN in October, with one
pair cut out and used on the outside envelope. Gastly enough, the radio
stamp was me ( wife) on the stamp, sent from a fellow DXer from JAPAN who
visited us in the states and then sent them to us, (I'm surprised customs
let it through). The two sheets are different denominations, and yes,
the photo part is laser printed.

My question is which country started it first?

I found them a bit liberal too.

I've listened to Radio For Peace International on shortwave regularly since
they first came on the air years ago. They were never a real international
peace organization just an international front organization run by
Communists, in existence soley to subvert third world countries, much like
the U.N. As far as free speech they only recognized their own free speech
rights. Like the global politically correct crowd they had no toleration
for opposing views, like this post for example. I say good riddance to them
as the premier international HATE broadcast outlet.

RE: [HCDX] Radio Farda QSLing

2003-07-13 Thread Konnie Rychalsky
Note of warning:
I sent an inquirery (non-report) via this same webpage; and my comment was
sent back to me with the same verbage added that: a) they did not have qsl
cards yet,
however b) they were able to verify my report. So my comment was
verified.

It appears that this comments section is an auto-mated response page. Try
and
type anything on this page, and see what you het in 2-3 days. This is why
I DO
NOT accept e-verifications. I want to see paper!

The frequencies of R FARDA are listed on the VOA listings as VOA. You may
wish to
get your qsls through VOA for these sites. I sent some reports but am still
awaiting
replys by mail.

A quick search on Google produced this post by Bob Coombs to this very list
on 18 Feb 2003:
Received a email verification of my Saturday (2-16-03) report in three
days from Radio Farda today. Send reports via their comment feedback
address on their website (www.radiofarda.com). They do not have Qsl
cards available as of yet. EQSL better than nothing I guess!.
