[HCDX] HELP: AMC-8 1540 heard in CT
Hi folks, After a lengthy hiatus, I'm back with a head scratcher: For the first time, on Nov 22 ( 23) heard on 1540 kHz at 0754-UTC on an analog clock-radio a loop consisting of a tone/message: This is Westwood One Radio Network's A-M-C-8 Transponder 23; To authorize your receiver contact c. I may have heard it also on the 24th, but not sure. Didn't hear it afterwards or since then. The recording on the 22nd (of 45 minutes) had two good strong peaks, and the final fade was pretty much the depth plunge, under KXEL WABE mix. Help!!! Who, what, where and why? Any links would surely help and greatly appreciated. [HCDX] 530 CUBA ?????
Information appreciated... Call? Location? 530 CM?? CUBA Havana assumed Nov 28+++, 0300; Rarely reported, yet frequently heard here VG signal... Throughout November December, have noted YL with EZ mx, many US pop tune instrumentals, usually heard well from - 0400 UTC. Signal is not from the 530 Canadian outlet with foreign language programming (and direction 90 degrees from the Cuban signal.) Information appreciated... Call? Location? Oddly enough, I have not seen this one mentioned in any Bogdan Chiochiu Pan-Am reports. Only other mentions were Glenn Hauser's DX Listening Digest June 6, 2005 in a drive by; and mention in Crystal Radio contest from at least two years ago. Much needed KSTP never reached level long enough for signif detail, quick spurts of a sec or two once in awhile. Z-DX or snooze while recording DX, found five (six?) stations, fighting it out before sunrise, in stereo*. Presumed WHLM-PA (sounded like WHMO or LO) w/ Christmas songs quick into fade, and two stations carrying Coast-to-Coast with echo, WBEN-NY one of them. Two other stations exchanging stage, one with early '50s oldies format but never got an ID. Just before end of tape, another ID heard: WGIR Sports. Not so fast, Santa...there is no WGI-R on 930, come to find out. WGIR is on 610 from NH. A quick search of stations with call letters WGI-*, it was interesting to find instead a WGI-N on 930, and also from NH, and a WGI-P on 1540, and again - also from NH. Simple logical deduction, all three freqs as assumed are listed in WGIR logo, www.wgiram.com along with am930wgin.com. Also explains one Coast-to-Coast station heard, carried here. No clear or obvious notation though that 930 carries 610, while 1540 a daytimer. *Stereo recording made using two receivers, facing 40 and 290 degrees respectively (L R channels) from here. [HCDX] 770 SS HELP
Thanks John, I have arm-chair level recording, and there were two SS stations. Wouldn't you know it, just when you want an ID, signals fade into the mud, hiding behind WABC [ chicken ], but I was able to hear twice the station chimed jingle, both at TOH, sort of like a taxis horn or short hat dance song. Sound familiar to anyone on the list? Thanks. Konnie S CT I had this last week and I think it was the Colombian. There were ads and other promos, which would pretty much rule out Cuba. I made a recording of it but it was inconclusive. But I'm pretty sure what i had last week was not Cuba. And it was putting in a monster signal, burying WABC at times. Re: [HCDX] Dxers Unlimited's weekend edition for 30-31 December 2006
Dear Mr. Coro, I have a question for you... If you truely are your host here in Havana, now ready to bring you short wave radio's most comprehensive radio hobby program.. The one and only that tries really hard to cover all aspects of this wonderful and fascinating hobby that you and I love... then why is it that Cuban radio stations (non RHC) do not issue individually specific QSL cards, since these stations are heard all over North America? I have seen QSL cards that were issued up to the end of the 1950's, however non after that. Why not? And if you are the pro so to speak over there in Cuba, what influence do you really have to suggest to begin to do so. Isn't there a radio club in all of Havana that can handle such a task? Or how about yourself as the central point of contact - now wouldn't that make great reporting on your weekly programs (as spoke person for all reception reports for all Cuban radio verifications)? I've been meaning to ask someone this question for 30 years. You're the man. 73s Konnie _ Your Hotmail address already works to sign into Windows Live Messenger! Re: [HCDX] Is there anything particular about 5.9-6MHz
Excellent article. I began SWL when in 1971 a portable AM/FM (FM totally new to me back then) began to pick up SW stations in between the AM stations...which was rather cool considering that I had just begun MW DXing. I actually wrote to the SW stations with reception reports and it was then that I realized, by the frequencies listed on the QSLs received, that these stations were in the same area 5.9 - 6.+ mHz. For half a year, that was my only window to SWL. On a very dry autum day, my under the kitchen cabinet radio will pick up a station or two - usually VOA or CBC, last time I listened. Perhaps the strangest dry radio was when, also back in the 70's, I ran a speaker wire between two floors and for the heck of it I wired it to a recorder as a mic (cold war, James Bond, Man from U.N.C.L.E., you know - spy flicks were in back then) and I noticed the meter jumping, so I recorded it and when I played it back, it was CBC in the same meter band; I remember that because it was reel to reel and I had to listen to about 90 minutes of tape for a freq. Thanks for the article - this joggled some memories, as listed above. Konnie Connecticut From: Francois Dion [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [HCDX] Is there anything particular about 5.9-6MHz Date: Fri, 30 Sep 2005 13:33:57 -0400 First, I'm in the southeast US (Piedmont Triad of North Carolina). For about 8 months now I've been getting accidental reception of various stations between 5.935 and a little above 6MHz, culminating in last night I received simultaneously RTI (i think), radiochina (because of the www identifier), Radio Sweden Stockholm, wwcr Tennesee (all of them I identified between 5.9 and 6.0MHz) and an unidentified station from Cuba (there is probably one at around that). This wouldn't be so interesting if it wasn't for the fact that I've received this in wildly different circumstances. First, I've gotten these exact frequencies many times using various circuits and different antennas (or absence of). In particular: http://www.cimastudios.com/fdion/water.html#wr3 or for a recap of the past few months: http://www.cimastudios.com/fdion/water.html I also have constructed dry receivers with similar results (basically similar in concept to foxhole radios without a tuning circuit). Or thru a Radio-Shack mini amplified speaker. I've modified it for maximum gain and to use as a VLF receiver, and apparently the signal goes thru the C3198 transistor which acts as a detector. Different type of antennas produce different signal strenght, always thru a floating ground. If I get a proper ground then I only get VLF. If I use a loop antenna, the same, just VLF, no SW. That's all fine and dandy, but why always these frequencies given there is no tuner?? Surely there can be no correlation between all these various accidental receptions. Yet, it is always those same stations that get picked up, around 6MHz. Thanks, Francois ---[Start Commercial]- World Radio TV Handbook 2005 is out. OK, as all know by now, these are NOT radio stamps, unless you want them to be. They can be your dog stamps, your cat stamps, your classic car stamps, or your radio-shack stamps... even your mug shot stamps. It's a great idea to those who live in countries who offer the service. Imagine, receiving ham qsls with call letters stamps... ouch, be careful who you send your digital photo to I received two sheets of stamps last year from JAPAN in October, with one pair cut out and used on the outside envelope. Gastly enough, the radio stamp was me ( wife) on the stamp, sent from a fellow DXer from JAPAN who visited us in the states and then sent them to us, (I'm surprised customs let it through). The two sheets are different denominations, and yes, the photo part is laser printed. My question is which country started it first? _ Dont just search. Find.
