Re: [H] desktop laser

2006-03-31 Thread Jeff Lane
I have had an HP 1012 for a couple of years and really like it. No trouble
at all. Mind gets sporadic use as well. If you need support, though, I find
that HP's is a big zero.

Subject: [H] desktop laser

I need a cheap Laser printer for documents and envelops. Very little use...
on average a dozen envelopes, and 15 pages per month. What I want is
something that is very reliable, no jams, no feed problems, minimizes paper
curl ... in short... no freaking problems.

A couple of years ago I bought a inexpensive Konica Minolta 135 at
Staples for this job. What a piece of crap. It is one month shy of two
years old and I am still on the original sample cartridge, which shows you
how little I need to print out on it.

When I first bought it I discovered it doesn't play nice with other
printers it has to be the default printer. So I picked up a Netgear
USB single device print server. Then at the end of every month I attempt
to print out a few pages, and envelopes, and I have to fight with constant
feed problems. Half the envelopes won't feed, and the cancel button takes
a minute to clear out an error. So I have to power down, power back up,
stack the envelopes and start over. And God help me if I want to print out
more then one, or two normal pages, like a pdf manual, on any kind of
paper, because I end up with a jam PDQ. You look at the inside of the
printer, and it is still in new condition. No paper dust, no burns,
nothing.

I have had enough of this thing, and it is time to try another brand of
cheap laser but what? I don't care about speed, endurance, features, I
just want it to work reliably the little bit I am going to use it. I am
thinking about HP LaserJet1020 laser printer which I can get on sale for
hundred bucks. Anyone have any experience with this.

Re: [H] Weird BitTorrent problem

I hope you will like the Western way of life and an advance welcome to
Spokane. As with everywhere there are always a few drawbacks, though. If you
have never been here the topography is something you are not accustomed on
most of the East Coast and we are at ~1800+ feet elevation in the lower
areas.

Getting way OT here so will back off for awhile.

BTW I feel luck if I can get 50-75K d/l speed on the torrents. I do use
BitLord and have tried other and did not care for them. I did get a speed
increase when I set the port to 49502...about 25k on the average. I do agree
that Comcast is probably clamping on P2P.

Oh man, that low? I just got used to 8MB (Gold, 6MB is standard/silver) on
Comcast here in Nj for that much and will be moving to Spokane in the next
few months if things work out right.

If that's the speed it's a real bummer!

they are very serious as all the do is funnel our money to the heavy
competition locations.

I switched from Azureus to Bitlord because Azureus was a RAM hog. Have
they fixed that?

True...I have heard that some sites are now allowing Bitorrent or BitLord
d/ls because they claim that the u/lds ratios can be manipulateddoesn't
that suck

Heh heh. At least you can separate your silicon based problems from your
carbon based ones. :)

Yes it does. I'm not sure how the ratios work anyway - I don't see a
speed increase after I've allowed my stuff to seed for days.

I've also heard that BitTorrent is going to start encrypting it's
transfers so ISP's can't block it. Not sure how that'd work, though,
because I assume they are blocking based on ports.

No FIOS here as of yet but I'm getting 5m/.5m D/U for $39.95 here I've
routinely downloaded 15g while sleeping the wee hours of the morning
without any effort at all from Usenet.
