Re: [ha-Safran]: Political conflict books
The young reader's version of Three Cups of Tea is more tightly written than the original and has some updated information. I can't keep it on the shelves in my school library. it really touches the kids. [ha-Safran]: Nicholas Winton: The Power of Good
Esteemed Colleagues: I spoke about a 2002 Documentary, Nicholas Winton: The Power of Good at a recent NYMA Workshop. It is the story of one British citizen who devised a plan and was able to saved 669 Czech children in 1938 and 1939. This inspiring documentary tells how an ordinary man took extraordinary action. This DVD of the film includes 70 minutes of extra interview footage and additional short films detailing further information on the rescue operation, the private life of Sir Winton, his opinions, and the lives of some of the children he saved. It also includes a teachers' guide with additional archival material and thought-provoking questions for class discussion. At one point, this DVD was being distributed to educators at no charge. This is not the case anymore. It is available through the National Center for Jewish Film for $49: http://www.brandeis.edu/jewishfilm/Catalogue/films/power.htm Hag Kasher V'Sameach, Kathe Pinchuck, Chair Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee Association of Jewish Libraries --- Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) === Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: hasaf...@osu.edu SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listproc @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 @ osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html History: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/history.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org
[ha-Safran]: Hakarat ha-Tov
Today I cataloged a children's book titled Celebrate Ramadan Eid Al-Fitr, which is part of National Geographic's Holidays Around the World Series. I was pleasantly surprised to find on page six, a picture of an elderly Arab man reading to a child. The caption for the picture: Abu Mofid Kosum reads the Qur'an to a young friend outside a cabin he uses for meditation in the Galilee region of Israel (emphasis mine). In light of all the garbage that gets published about Israel, it's nice to see some something positive. It is important to recognize the positive (hakarat ha-tov) no matter how small.
