Re: [ha-Safran]: looking for library programming ideas- 3/4th grades

2010-11-15 Thread Kathe Pinchuck
Hi Rachel,

Two things that might work are a bingo game and a scavenger hunt.

With the bingo game, you can ask the students to find certain kinds
of books with certain information.

With the scavenger hunt, your clues would be directing them to the
books or items, so you could tell them to look in a dictionary for a
definition, or an encyclopedia for a famous person's birthday, etc.
That way they are learning some basic library skills at the same time.

Also check out www.chinuch.org for programming ideas.

I don't know if you have access to any library school in your area,
but here local libraries are taking advantage of the 'capstone
projects' or other class projects that the local library school
students need to perform during their studies. At least for the
research part - I think it could be a nice collection
management/assessment project for a student.

Nextbook. The national exhibit tours have been made possible by
grants from the Charles H. Revson Foundation, the David Berg
Foundation, and the Nash Family Foundation, with additional support
from Tablet Magazine:A New Read on Jewish Life.

Successful applicants will host one traveling exhibition for a
six-week period between April 2011 and February 2012 and receive
programming and technical support from the ALA Public Programs
Office. Participating libraries are expected to present at least two
free public programs for adults on themes related to the exhibtions.
All showings of the exhibition must be free and open to the public.

[ha-Safran]: Jewish traveling exhibits

2010-11-15 Thread Heidi Estrin
The following announcement came to me by email and I thought the rest
of you might be interested – Heidi Estrin

The ALA Public Programs Office is pleased to announce three new
traveling exhibits focusing on Jewish artists who have contributed to
the culture of America and the world through their lives and work.
Public, academic and special libraries, including museum libraries
and Jewish community centers are invited to apply by January 24 by
visiting www.ala.org/jewishartists.

The exhibits were developed by Nextbook, Inc., a nonprofit
organization dedicated to supporting Jewish literature, culture and
ideas, and the ALA Public Programs Office, with funding from
Nextbook. The national exhibit tours have been made possible by
grants from the Charles H. Revson Foundation, the David Berg
Foundation and the Nash Family Foundation, with additional support
from Tablet Magazine: A New Read on Jewish Life.

Libraries are invited to apply to host a traveling exhibition on one
of three subjects:

1. In a Nutshell: The Worlds of Maurice Sendak
Based on a major retrospective exhibition created by the Rosenbach
Museum Library, Philadelphia, this exhibit reveals the push and
pull of New and Old Worlds in Sendak's work and shows how Sendak's
artistic journey has led him deeper into his own family's history and
his Jewish identity.

2. Emma Lazarus: Voice of Liberty, Voice of Conscience
In this exhibit, a vital woman is brought to life in all her
fascinating complexity. Viewers see Lazarus's place in history as a
poet, an activist and a prophet of the world we live in today. The
exhibit traces her life, intellectual development, work and lasting influence.

3. A Fine Romance: Jewish Songwriters, American Songs, 1910-1965
Illustrated with colorful posters from Broadway shows and photographs
of composers, singers and the casts of hit musicals and films, this
exhibit highlights the lives and works of Irving Berlin, George and
Ira Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern and a host of other Jewish
songwriters who wove the American songbook deep into the fabric of
American culture.

Successful applicants will host one traveling exhibition for a
six-week period between April 2011 and February 2012 and receive
programming and technical support from the ALA Public Programs
Office. Participating libraries are expected to present at least two
free public programs for adults on themes related to the exhibitions.
All showings of the exhibition must be free and open to the public.
Each of the exhibits requires at least 200 square feet of display space.

More information about the exhibitions, including guidelines and the
online application, is available atwww.ala.org/jewishartists. With
questions, contact the ALA Public Programs Office at publicprogr...@ala.org.

Below is the report for the Library Snapshot Day at the Celia
Gurevitch Jewish Community Library at Congregation Beth Ami, Santa
Rosa, CA. On Sundays the library is open between 9 AM and 12.30. For
the Library Snashot Day we also had two additional events after these
hours. Pictures and the handouts of our events are available from the
blog post version of this report at:
http://www.bethamisr.org/library/2010/11/10/report-on-learningsnapshot-day/

Our first planned event, a discussion with the older students of the
religious school got postponed because of logistical reasons. The
second one, story time with the second graders, started a little bit
later than planned, because of their folk dancing class. The nine
children and one madricha arrived to the library a few minutes after
11 AM and we read It Could Always Be Worse by Margot Zemach. They
enjoyed the story and were active in the discussion about it,
providing ideas how a situation could be worse or how the problem in
the opening pages of the book could be solved. Six of the children
borrowed books after the reading, one for each. We had four more
visitors in the library till we closed at 12.30, not counting the
teachers, all of them parents. Two of them borrowed a book each.

At 1 PM the local United Synagogue Youth group started its first
social action/Tikkun Olam event of the year in the large classroom of
the campus, they made brown bag lunches for the Kid Street Learning
Center. At 2 PM, I (Gabor Por, the librarian) joined them and lead a
discussion under the title of Is Facebook God? Fortunately, as I
suspected, they were all on Facebook so I didn't have to introduce it
to them. We took Maimonides 13 attributes of God and attempted to
compare it to Facebook or at least discover connections to it. Most
of the nine teens and their group leader seemed to enjoy the
conversation which lasted about 45 minutes. At the end they were all
keen to take home a copy of the handout (PDF, 105 kb) that listed the
attributes and provided one Facebook related idea and a suggestion
for each. Rick Concoff, the Chaverim (local multi/non-denominational
teen program) director, also joined us for most of the event.

To close the day we had an other presentation at 7 PM, this time on
Jewish Learning Online. We started a few minutes late as setting up
the projector and copying the handouts took slightly longer than
expected. The slide presentation (PDF, 1 MB) consisted of 18 slides,
including the cover and 7 screenshots of websites. The handout (PDF,
65 kb) included all the URLs mentioned in the slideshow. The five
people who showed up shared some of their favorite sites,
particularly in the area that the presentation didn't even attempt to
cover: culture.

The day in numbers:

28 patrons (9 children, 1 madrich, 7 teens, 2 teen leaders, 4
parents, 5 adults)
8 borrowed items
3 events

These may not seem high, but we are a small congregation and these
numbers are much higher than our usual Sunday tally.

Thank you AJL and HaSafran list members for prompting us to join in
the Snapshot Day initiatives,

Gabor Por MLIS, Librarian

1. Does your library/institution buy films at the
educational/institutional price point, or do you typically pay the
home video price?

2. Would you be more inclined to buy a film if it came with a study
guide, extra material, and/or special features?

3. If you paid a lower price now for just the feature, would you be
willing to pay more in the future for extra educational
materials? Alternatively, would you be willing to pay the full
educational price point at the outset for such an arrangement?

4. Do educators actually use the extra materials that come with many
films? If so, then what materials have you found most useful when
screening a film in the classroom?

[ha-Safran]: A new eBook for Chanukah

2010-11-15 Thread Libi Feinberg
eBook Release: 36 Candles: Chassidic Tales for Chanukah

By Libi Astaire

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Baal Shem Tov and Others Meet the eBook in

36 Candles: Chassidic Tales for Chanukah

Jerusalem, Israel (November 2010) This year kindling the Chanukah
lights will be a whole new story when the Baal Shem Tov, Rabbi Zusya
of Hanipoli and others enter the age of the eBook with 36 Candles:
Chassidic Tales for Chanukah, a retelling of thirty-six inspiring
tales from the Chassidic and Mussar traditions by Libi Astaire - one
tale for each candle that is lit during the eight days of the holiday.

While some tales take place in the Eastern European shtetls of
several hundred years ago and others are set during the Holocaust,
each story has been specially chosen because of the way that it
illuminates Chanukah's eternal message: Never despair! Miracles do
happen. Light can be found when and where we least expect it.

Libi Astaire is the author of the historical mystery The Disappearing
Dowry (Zahav Press), recipient of a 2010 Sydney Taylor Notable Book
Award, and Terra Incognita(Targum Press), a novel about modern-day
descendents of Spain's crypto-Jews. In addition to being a regular

2010-11-15 Thread B Weinstein
Thanks so much to my friends who responded to my request for SAT
practice programs. I'm posting their suggestions:

Joyce Levine's (North Shore) contribution was the free program My
College Quickstart. It's put out by the College Board and is accessed at
http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/quickstart.html

Rachail Kurtz (Flatbush) suggested Gale's Testing and Education
Reference Center. I've already set up a free trial period.

Thank you again for your quick and knowledgeable support and for
being so gracious and willing to share.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
will be marked on November 25th. A Prayer Concerning Women who have
been Murdered by their Spouses is scheduled to be recited on that
day, as well as on November 20, Shabbat Parashat Va-Yishlach, in

by myself in 2001, and, filling a lacuna, soon gained acceptance.

[ha-Safran]: HOTHOUSE - A FAMILY IN DISENGAGEMENT

2010-11-15 Thread Ruth Diskin
Shalom Safranim,

The unique challenges of contemporary Israel are beautifully brought
to life in the thoughtful documentary HOTHOUSE - A FAMILY IN DISENGAGEMENT.

The disengagement of Israel from Gaza in 2005 is the background for
this poignant story of one women's determination in the face of
hardship. Ronit Balaban runs the family hothouse which exports plants
to Europe. She is capable, strong and determined. While her country
is in the midst of disengaging from the region she calls home – her
husband had already disengaged from life many years before. Yaakov
was the victim of a terror attack which left him disfigured. His
inability to cope with his deformity has made him withdrawn and
remote. This is the story of one woman's struggle to keep her family,
her marriage and above all – her hothouse working and flourishing.

A recent review in Video Librarian calls the film: a compelling
documentary. - skillfully intertwines the personal and the
political. http://www.videolibrarian.com/othervideo.html#Anchor-29895

HOTHOUSE would be a wonderful addition to your library collection. It
is a sensitive film about a sensitive topic.

The price for purchase is $300 for university libraries and $115 for
public libraries. Prices do not include shipping and handling.

For more information on the film please follow the link to our webpage at

http://www.ruthfilms.com/hothouse.html

And as always, please feel free to contact us with any questions at:

r...@ruthfilms.com

Best regards,

Ruth

[ha-Safran]: Lehmann Memorial Master Workshop

2010-11-15 Thread arthur kiron
ANNOUNCEMENT
Please Post

THE MANFRED R. LEHMANN MEMORIAL MASTER WORKSHOP IN
THE HISTORY OF THE JEWISH BOOK

The Jewish Studies Program at the University of Pennsylvania, in
conjunction with the University of Pennsylvania Libraries and the
Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University
of Pennsylvania, are pleased to announce the eleventh annual Manfred
R. Lehmann Memorial Master Workshop to be held on May 8-9,
(Sunday-Monday), 2011, at the Katz Center. The topic is Collectors
and Collections: Hebrew Manuscripts and Incunabula in Russia. This
year's workshop will be led by Dr. Shimon Iakerson, the Head
Researcher at the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian
Academy of Sciences and Curator of the Judaica collections of the
Russian Museum of Ethnography. One of the world's leading experts on
Hebrew incunabula, Professor Iakerson is the author of many books
including Ohel Hayim Vol. 3 (Incunabula and Sixteenth Century Books
in the Manfred and Ann Lehmann Collection) and the monumental
Catalogue of Hebrew Incunabula from the Collection of the Library of
the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.

About 22 thousand Hebrew manuscripts and more than 100 Hebrew
incunabula are preserved in the libraries and research centers of
Russia. Until recently these volumes were largely unavailable to
Western scholars. Since the opening of these collections some twenty
years ago, they have revolutionized many fields in Jewish Studies.
This year's Lehmann Workshop will deal with the histories of these
collections, the stories of the collectors and bibliographers who
built them, and the importance of these books for the history of
Jewish culture. Other topics to be treated will include the nature of
the earliest Hebrew codices; Karaite manuscripts and communities;
forgery; and the importance of the Russian incunabula for
understanding the beginnings of Jewish printing. Since the workshop
will concentrate upon reading colophons, dedications and owners'
notes, knowledge of Hebrew is highly desirable.

The workshop is open to professors and independent scholars,
professional librarians in the field of Jewish and related studies,
and graduate students in Jewish Studies. Attendance at previous
workshops is not a prerequisite for admission.

For faculty and professionals, tuition is $250. In addition to
attendance and all materials for the workshop, the tuition includes
two or three nights in a hotel (double-occupancy) for the nights of
May 7 and 8 (with the option of May 6), and all meals and
refreshments (all kosher) during the course of the workshop.

Graduate students may apply for a full scholarship to the workshop.
To apply for the scholarship, a graduate student should write us
giving the details of his or her academic program and a brief
statement explaining how the workshop will further his or her
academic studies. S/he should also ask a faculty advisor to write us
a letter of recommendation on the student's behalf.

Attendance is limited. If you are interested in attending the
workshop, please notify us immediately. Full payment must be received
by March 1, 2011. Make checks payable to Trustees of the University
of Pennsylvania. A registration form is available at:
http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/jwst/registrationLW2011.pdf

[ha-Safran]: Opportunities to Participate in AJL Activities

2010-11-15 Thread James Rosenbloom
Hello. You have already heard from me, as well as from others, about
opportunities for members to participate in AJL activities. I would
like to remind you of these opportunities, to emphasize their
importance and to encourage you to participate.

There is still time to submit a proposal to make a presentation at
our upcoming June conference in Montreal. We encourage you in
particular to think of topics that improve the library skills of our
members, from reference to reader assistance, from collection
development to cataloging, from internet resources to preservation,
from fund raising to de-accessioning. Please send your proposals to
our convention committee.

The position of Chair of Chapter Relations is very important. Many
of our members have never attended our conventions. Their exposure
to new developments in Judaica librarianship and their ability
to network with fellow librarians depend on participating in an
active local chapter. We have been lucky to have had very energetic
and devoted chairs of this committee who supported local chapter
activities and worked hard to set up new chapters. This is a
wonderful chance to become acquainted with our members in many
different locations. Please contact me if you are interested.

We have a vacancy in our Newsletter to share the editorship
of children and young adults reviews with Anne Dublin. If you enjoy
sharing information about good books with others, this is the perfect
job for you. Our reviews of the children and young adults literature
are an important tool for our many members in schools, synagogues and
centers. This is a good position for a book lover who can't keep his
or her enthusiasm for good books hidden away.

And finally, but certainly not least, we need someone to do copy
editing and layout for the Newsletter. We consistently produce a
clean layout and nice looking pages. If you are a detail person,
with good writing and editing skills, this is the job for you.

If you are interested in either of the newsletter jobs, please
contact the editor Uri Kolodney.

We are a voluntary work force. We don't have an executive director,
and we need to rely on our members to perform all of the
organization's many activities. I would like particularly to
encourage those of you who have not been involved at the national
level to take a more active role. It is important for us not only to
have committee members and chairmen who are very experienced. We are
always interested in the knowledge and ideas that new participants
can bring to running our organization.

AJL needs you, and is eager for you to participate in our many activities.

[ha-Safran]: Looking for library programming ideas- 3/4th grades

2010-11-15 Thread Amalia Warshenbrot
Rachel,
In reply to your follow up question.
Here is a list of stories that are published in different
versions. Divide the students into 2 or 3 groups. Ask each to read a
version tell the story to the other groups and compare the versions.
I have not been working for almost two years so I hope that I
remember correctly
Yettele's feathers by Joan Rothenberg (or Ruthenberg)
Feathers by Heather Forest
Feathers in the wind by Marian Chaikin
All three stories are easy reading so the children will have time to
read and compare. It is about the damage done by gossip.
In the collection of stories Ten best Jewish children stories By
Chan and Daniel Sperber there is a story titled The love of two brothers
There are at least two more versions
The brothers promise by Frances Haber and
Brothers: a Hebrew legend by Florence Freeman
A legends about brothers caring for each other. When I read it to
children I always finish with the song heenay ma tov umah naeem.
Something from nothing by Phoebe Gilman
Joseph had a little overcoat by Simms Taback
About grandpa making something new each time when the coat gets too small.
There are many versions of the story about the man that complains
that the Rabbi his house is too crowded. It appears in many
collections of short stories under the title It could be worst. If
you put a question on Ha-Safran you will get more replies that you
can imagine for the titles of a book or a collection of stories. Or
email to Linda Silver silve...@roadrunner.com or Heidi Estrin
he...@cbiboca.org . They don't even need to look it up to reply.
I hope that this helps.

[ha-Safran]: The Money Book

2010-11-15 Thread leah cohen
Author Rosally Saltsman requested that the following be posted on ha-Safran:

The tuition crisis facing our schools, the number of home
foreclosures in our communities and unrelenting unemployment all
underscore a challenge every Jewish educator must deal with today:
instilling in our children an appreciation for what they have and not
a burning desire for what is unattainable.

Today, perhaps more than ever, the one life lesson every Jewish
student must learn early on is frugality.

The Money Book is a very easy-to-read e-book and guide to making the
most of what you've got. Author Rosally Saltsman shares her personal
experiences and lessons learned, offering the reader a useful and
actionable blend ofJewish philosophy, anecdotes, inspiration and
practical guidance.

The Money Book is suitable for everyone Bar/Bat Mitzvah age and
