[ha-Safran]: A Library Day in the Life

2011-07-20 Thread Heidi Estrin
Nobody knows what we do, right? People think librarians sit around
and read all day. Well, here's a way to let your patrons, bosses, and
other stakeholders know how busy and useful you are. It's also a way
to show the world in general what librarianship is all about. It's a
project that's already going on, and it's easy for any AJL librarian
to join in.

The Library Day in the Life Project takes place next week, July
25-31, 2011. You can choose to participate for one day or the whole
week. Here's the description from their website:

The Library Day in the Life Project is a semi-annual event
coordinated by Bobbi Newman of the blog 'Librarian by Day.' Twice a
year librarians, library staff and library students from all over the
globe share a day (or week) in their life through blog posts, photos,
video and Twitter updates.

Anyone who works in a library can participate. You may share your day
(or week) on your blog, Twitter, Flickr and/or YouTube (or any other
way you choose). If you have none of these don't worry, just create a
new page in the Library Day in the Life Project wiki and post your
day there (see http://librarydayinthelife.pbworks.com/w/page/42017739/Roun).

At this time there are 82 libraries of all kinds signed up, from the
US, Canada, the UK, Australia, Israel, and Europe. Wouldn't it be
great if AJL libraries were included in the mix?

We hope you'll take the time to share YOUR Day in the Life and show
the world how wonderful your library is! Thanks to Sarah Leah Gross
for posting the link on AJL's Facebook page to bring the project to
our attention.

[ha-Safran]: NewCAJE conference!

2011-05-16 Thread Heidi Estrin
Many of you may be familiar with CAJE, the Coalition for the
Advancement of Jewish Education. NewCAJE is holding its second annual
conference July 31-August 3, 2011 in Greensboro, NC. (This is the
second conference since CAJE reinvented itself.) The purpose of
NewCAJE is to explore what makes Jewish education work. Their slogan
is Re-imagining Jewish education for the 21st century.

Wouldn't it be great to have librarians there as part of the mix at
this conference? Those teachers need to remember that we're out
there! I encourage any interested AJL-ers to consider attending this
conference. Early bird registration ends May 16 (this coming Monday),
so take a look at their website right away to see the
details:http://newcaje.webnode.com/. If you are under age 43 they
even have a special Young Professionals track with all kinds of special perks!

If you do go, please let me know. I'm working with a committee of
AJL council members to figure out how we can spread the word about
AJL to other organizations, and I'd love to hear about your
experience interfacing withNewCAJE!

Part-time Librarian for West Palm Beach synagogue

We are seeking a 10 hour/week, experienced, librarian to coordinate

2011-04-13 Thread Heidi Estrin
We've got a new episode of The Book of Life for you, on Yuvi's Candy Tree!

Author Lesley Simpson offered to interview herself, and I couldn't
pass that up! She talks about Yuvi's Candy Tree (Kar-Ben, 2011), a
picture book on Ethiopian Jews fleeing to Israel based on the true
story of Yuvi Tashome. With its strong Exodus themes, it makes a
great tie-in to Passover; it's also a universal immigration story and
a good illustration of the diversity of the Jewish family. Yuvi's
Candy Tree is also a PJ Library selection for ages 8 and up.

[ha-Safran]: The AJL Podcast: What IS it?

2011-03-31 Thread Heidi Estrin
This is the third entry in my series about technology used by AJL.
The first two entries covered the AJL Blog and the Jewish Book
Carnival. You can find them in the Hasafran archives. I'm planning
future episodes about Twitter and Facebook. If there are other topics
you'd like to hear about, please let me know. This time I'll be
explaining AJL's PODCAST. – Heidi Estrin, he...@cbiboca.org

What is a podcast?

A podcast is an audio or video program on the Internet. What makes it
different from any old audio clip or YouTube video? A podcast is an
ongoing show that has multiple episodes, and you can subscribe to it.
The same way you can subscribe to a magazine and have each issue
arrive at your house, you can subscribe to a podcast and have each
new episode arrive on your computer. Subscriptions for podcasts are
usually free.

What will you find on the AJL Podcast?

AJL's podcast is made up of audio recordings of sessions from our
conventions and other regional AJL-related events. We have been
podcasting since 2008.

How do you get the AJL Podcast?

You can find the podcast at http://jewishlibraries.org/podcast. At
that location, you can read instructions for subscribing to the
podcast. ***You do NOT have to subscribe to the podcast in order to
listen to it!*** Just like you can buy an individual issue of a
magazine at a newsstand without subscribing to the magazine, you can
listen to individual episodes of the AJL Podcast at our website
without subscribing to it. It's your own choice.

How is the AJL Podcast page organized?

When you go to http://jewishlibraries.org/podcast, you will see a
complete list of all our audio recordings, alphabetically arranged by
the last name of the speaker. You can click on the title of any
recording to be taken to its individual page, where you can click the
PLAY button to listen. If you would like to narrow your search, you
have two options. You can click on a broad category of interest: RAS,
SSC, or Children's Youth Literature. Alternatively, you can click
on Index to be taken to more specific subject headings.

When scrolling through the complete list of audio recordings, you may
notice that some speakers have multiple recordings. That is because
so many wonderful authors and AJL members return to our conventions
with new information to share year after year!

Who's in charge of the AJL Podcast?

The AJL Podcast is overseen by Heidi Estrin, who has been podcasting
since 2005 at her synagogue library. Her library's podcast is called
The Book of Life, and it receives some support from AJL, making
cross-promotion possible. You can hear episodes of The Book of Life
at http://bookoflifepodcast.com.

***NEWS ABOUT THE PODCAST***

As the 2011 Convention draws near, we will be publishing the
remaining podcast episodes from the 2010 Convention at an accelerated
rate! Watch Hasafran, Facebook, and Twitter for notices of new episodes!

[ha-Safran]: The Jewish Book Carnival: What IS it?

2011-02-10 Thread Heidi Estrin
Here is the next installment in my series of explanations of AJL's
online resources. Today I want to talk about the Jewish Book
Carnival, which is a blog carnival.

What is a Blog Carnival?

A blog carnival is sort online community event. The community is a
group of bloggers who all cover a similar topic on their blogs. The
event is a day when all of the bloggers contribute links and make one
big blog post out of them. It's called a carnival because it's a
celebration of the topic being covered (in our case, Jewish books)!

The point of doing this is that it builds community among bloggers
with a shared interest, it educates everyone who reads the blog
posts, and it builds traffic to all the blogs by allowing them to
share their audiences with each other.

What is the Jewish Book Carnival?

In 2010 I (Heidi Estrin) attended the Book Bloggers Convention in
NYC. An idea I brought home with me was that of creating a blog
carnival for the various blogs that deal with Jewish literature and
library issues.

AJL's consultant Marie Cloutier helped get the ball rolling. She
recruited participants like the Jewish Book Council, the Jewish
Women's Archive, J Weekly and various Jewish newspaper blogs, other
blogs by individuals who just enjoy reviewing Jewish books, and more.

AJL is the hosting organization for the Jewish Book Carnival, and you
can find the headquarters on our blog
athttp://jewishlibraries.org/blog/?page_id=371. At that location, you
will also find a list of participating bloggers.

How does the Jewish Book Carnival work?

Each month, one of the participants is the carnival host. The other
participants send the host a link to one of their own blog posts,
something about Jewish literature, literacy, libraries, etc.

On the 15th of each month, the host creates a post on their own blog
which lists all the links everybody has sent in. The participants can
also post something on their own blogs to draw attention to the blog carnival.

Readers like you can follow the various links to find a smorgasbord
of articles on a topic we all love: Jewish books! You can also help
with the community-building aspect and make the bloggers feel good by
leaving them comments on their blogs.

Where can you see an example of the Jewish Book Carnival?

Follow this link to see the carnival that was posted on January 15,
2011. That month, the carnival was hosted at AJL's own blog, People
of the Books at http://jewishlibraries.org/blog/?p=741.

Where can you find the next Jewish Book Carnival?

No matter where the carnival is being hosted, we will always put a
link on AJL's blog, People of the Books
(http://jewishlibraries.org/blog), so that you can find the monthly
Jewish Book Carnival.

To see a list of upcoming hosts, look at the headquarters I mentioned
earlier at http://jewishlibraries.org/blog/?page_id=371. As of this
writing, we have hosts through April 2011 but we need hosts for May
and beyond. If you have a Jewish oriented blog and you would like to
host, please email me and let me know at he...@cbiboca.org!

GoodReads:

The Jewish Book Carnival also has a GoodReads group at
http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/34560.Jewish_Book_Carnival.
GoodReads is an online community for book lovers. Using GoodReads
gives our carnival participants a way to easily communicate and have
discussions about books they are enjoying. Even if you are not a
blogger, you are welcome to join the GoodReads group.

[ha-Safran]: The AJL Blog: What IS it?

2011-02-08 Thread Heidi Estrin
Linda Silver expressed something to me that I suppose many AJL folks
are feeling, some confusion about the various online activities AJL
is engaging in these days. I promised to try to clear up the
confusion for her and for everyone who feels the same but was afraid
to ask! I'm going to give you some brief explanations here, and I
invite anyone else to respond with further explanations if they think
I missed something, or to ask more questions.

Actually, I think I'd better break this up into a series of messages
or it will get too long. This one will be about the AJL Blog (and
also the Blog Tour). I will follow up with more messages about the
Podcast, the Jewish Book Carnival,Facebook (including Facebook
Fridays), Twitter, and whatever else you guys might ask me about.

This is long, but if you take the time to read it, you will learn a
lot! – Heidi Estrin

THE AJL BLOG

What is a blog?

A blog is a kind of website. A plain old website is kind of like a
brochure that is online. A blog is more like a newsletter. The word
comes from web+log=blog. Like Captain Kirk's starlog, a blog is an
ongoing chronicle of news. The most recent item shows at the top and
you can scroll down to see older news items.

AJL's Blog is named People of the Books. Get it? That's us,
librarians are the people of the books. ALL of the books!

You can find the blog at http://www.jewishlibraries.org/blog.

The blog was established when Suzi Dubin was president, and was
enhanced by the hard work of AJL's consultant Marie Cloutier. At this
time, the blog is overseen by Etta Gold, Chair of PR, and me (Heidi
Estrin, VP). AJL member Bob Schrier is pitching in, and we hope to
find more folks who'd like to participate.

What can you find on AJL's Blog, People of the Books?

You will find AJL press releases, author interviews, features on AJL
members and/or their libraries, round-ups of links to other websites
with useful Jewish and/or library related resources (this is what Bob
is helping with), highlights of resources offered by AJL, and more.

Comments:

One thing that makes a blog cooler than an old-fashioned newsletter
is that it allows for conversation between the writer and readers.
Readers can add comments to any blog post (a post is an article on
a blog). Anyone who looks at the blog after that will be able to read
that comment. It's a great way to share your own expertise or
experiences, or to ask for more information.

How-To:

In order to leave a comment, look at the bottom of any post for the
place where it says no comments (or possibly 1 comment or 3
comments etc) in blue. Click on that and you'll be taken to a
comment form. You must fill in your name but you can leave off your
last name if you prefer. You must fill in your email address, but it
will NOT show on the blog (only the blog administrators can see it)
so don't worry that you are sharing your email address with the
world. There's also a space to provide the address of your own
website if you have one, but feel free to leave that line blank. Then
go ahead, click in the large box, and type your comment! At the
bottom you'll see a red and yellow box with some scrambled letters in
it – you need to type those letters before submitting your comment.
This feature, called Captcha, makes sure you are a real person and
not a spammer. It just helps us keep our blog from getting messed up
with dumb ads for Rolex watches and false lottery winning announcements!

Sharing:

At the bottom of each blog post is a little green button with a white
shape in it and the words Share this next to it. Put your cursor
on top of the green button and it will bring up a menu of choices for
sharing that blog post with the world. You can choose to email it to
someone, to post it to Facebook or Twitter, and more. If you think
the content of the blog post is worth sharing, this is a handy way to do it.

The Sydney Taylor Book Award Blog Tour:

Something special that you will see on the AJL Blog, Sunday February
6 through Friday February 11, is a blog tour. A blog tour is like a
virtual book tour, but the authors don't have to go to a library or
bookstore. Instead, author interviews appear on participating blogs.
It's a tour because there are several (virtual) locations where the
interviews take place. This blog tour features the 2011 Sydney Taylor
Book Award gold and silver medalists. Each day you'll be able to
visit AJL's Blog, People of the Books, to find links to the
interviews at the hosting blogs. And of course, once it's online it
stays there, so you can read the interviews at any time after they
are posted. It would be WONDERFUL if you could leave comments on
these interview blog posts, because then the authors and the
participating bloggers know that people are reading it!

An easier way to read the blog:

If you don't want to have to remember to visit
http://www.jewishlibraries.org/blog, you can sign up

[ha-Safran]: Sydney Taylor Book Award Blog Tour has begun!

[ha-Safran]: Wanted: Facebook Fridays Moderator

2011-01-26 Thread Heidi Estrin
Wanted: a moderator for Facebook Fridays!

As you may know, our consultant Marie Cloutier instituted a wonderful
new program called Facebook Fridays, in which an AJL member shares
their expertise in real time, by answering questions posted to AJL's
Facebook wall atwww.facebook.com/jewishlibraries. These online events
are usually held around 12pm Eastern/9am Pacific time, once every few
weeks. The moderator introduces the expert, helps to keep the
conversation going smoothly, and watches the time, just like a
moderator at a live presentation.

Marie's term as our consultant will end on January 31 so she will no
longer be available to moderate Facebook Fridays. I will be
overseeing AJL's Facebook activities, but I'm not available to
moderate Facebook Fridays during the established timeframe (because I
teach classes during the day). Therefore I am seeking an AJL
volunteer who is comfortable using Facebook, who would be willing to
act as moderator.

Please email me at he...@cbiboca.org if you think you might be
interested. It's not a difficult or time consuming task, it just
requires someone who reliably shows up when they are supposed to!

[ha-Safran]: Alternative curriculum for Thanksgiving

2010-12-14 Thread Heidi Estrin
Hi. At the synagogue preschool where I am librarian, we have a pretty
traditional Thanksgiving curriculum, with a strong emphasis on
turkeys, Pilgrims, and Indians. I'd like to see what alternative
suggestions I can come up with to get us refocused more on the
meaning of the holiday and less on the untrue history of the First
Thanksgiving (and I'm not proposing we teach preschoolers the true
history of how the settlers and Indians got along either – too dark).
Seems to me the best way is to avoid dealing with the history until
they're older, and for now just to teach about thankfulness, harvest,
and so on. If anyone can point me towards any specific online lesson
plans (or share your own), unbiased Thanksgiving picture books, etc.,
I would be … ahem … thankful. Also, if you are on any early childhood
education listservs and you don't mind posing the question there and
forwarding any answers to me, I'd be doubly thankful!

Happy belated Thanksgiving,

Heidi Estrin

3,548 Library Lovers Celebrate Jewish Library Snapshot Day

Library Snapshot Day 2010

The People of the Book really do love libraries! In November 2010,
during Jewish Book Month, 30 Jewish libraries participated in Library
Snapshot Day. The event, sponsored by the Association of Jewish
Libraries, was created to let all types of Judaic libraries record
what happens in a day in the life of a library. Across North America,
libraries in synagogues, day schools, community centers and
universities picked one day during the first two weeks of November to
hold the event. Collectively, participating libraries served 3,548
patrons on Library Snapshot Day.

The Activities

From Jewish hubs like Chicago, IL to smaller Jewish communities like
Tulsa, OK, from sunny Miami, FL to chilly Montreal, Quebec, Jewish
libraries held author visits, study groups, literary and computer
quizzes, artist receptions, book discussions, book sales, scavenger
hunts, craft projects, parenting programs, charity drives, and
children's story times. Eleven of the participating libraries shared
their circulation statistics, revealing that at least 745 books were
checked out during Library Snapshot Day.

The Feedback

Every participating library reported overwhelmingly positive feedback
from its community. Common themes included praise for the library as
a quiet, peaceful environment in which to read and work, kudos for
the hard work of librarians (many of whom, apparently, rock), and
appreciation for the many print and digital resources provided. A
patron at North Shore Hebrew Academy High School in Great Neck, NY
said The library is a great place to study and clear your head. I
always feel relaxed and very welcomed when I come to the library, and
I love the librarian. A sixth-grader at the Sheila Sporn Library at
Valley Beth Shalom in Encino, CA said Libraries are important
because they let people who don't have enough money get books to
read. A patron of the Brenner Library at Temple Emanuel in Denver,
CO drives 150 miles from the mountains to make use of the facilities.
Perhaps the general sentiments of library users are best summed up by
a patron at the Feldman Library at Congregation B'nai Israel in Boca
Raton, FL, who said The library helps us to continue to be the
People of the Book!

What It All Means

Library Snapshot Day captured the diversity of services offered by
Jewish libraries and underscored the importance of libraries in
Jewish life. Libraries and librarians often fly under the radar in
their communities, said Association of Jewish Libraries
Vice-President, Heidi Estrin. We are thrilled that, on Library
Snapshot Day, over three thousand people expressed their love of
Jewish libraries. We hope that the event will encourage even more
people to use these amazing resources year-round. A slide show of
selected photographs submitted by participants may be viewed on AJL's
blog People of the Books at jewishlibraries.org/blog.

The concept of Library Snapshot Day originated with the American
Library Association, of which AJL is an affiliate.More information on
ALA's Library Snapshot Day is available at

2010-11-23 Thread Heidi Estrin
Hello all,
I received the information below about an interesting library related
website and am passing it along to all of you for your own information.
--Heidi Estrin

 From Lindsay Samuels:

I would like to let you know about my new website,
http://librarysciencedegree.org.

My goal was to compile an unbiased and updated list of every school
that offers a library science degree in the US. I felt the existing lists
were not comprehensive, easy to find, and many web sites have outdated
information and links. I believe I have built a useful resource for library
science students and would simply like to ask that you take a look and link
to my site if you agree. All the schools are listed on the front page
and lead directly to each program, additionally they are sorted by state.

Since my primary goal was to compile an updated list of every library
science degree program in the US, if you know of any I have missed, please
let me know so I can add them. Otherwise, if you have any questions or
would like any additional information, please feel free to ask.

Thank you for your consideration,
Lindsay Samuels

[ha-Safran]: Jewish traveling exhibits

2010-11-15 Thread Heidi Estrin
The following announcement came to me by email and I thought the rest
of you might be interested – Heidi Estrin

The ALA Public Programs Office is pleased to announce three new
traveling exhibits focusing on Jewish artists who have contributed to
the culture of America and the world through their lives and work.
Public, academic and special libraries, including museum libraries
and Jewish community centers are invited to apply by January 24 by
visiting www.ala.org/jewishartists.

The exhibits were developed by Nextbook, Inc., a nonprofit
organization dedicated to supporting Jewish literature, culture and
ideas, and the ALA Public Programs Office, with funding from
Nextbook. The national exhibit tours have been made possible by
grants from the Charles H. Revson Foundation, the David Berg
Foundation and the Nash Family Foundation, with additional support
from Tablet Magazine: A New Read on Jewish Life.

Libraries are invited to apply to host a traveling exhibition on one
of three subjects:

1. In a Nutshell: The Worlds of Maurice Sendak
Based on a major retrospective exhibition created by the Rosenbach
Museum Library, Philadelphia, this exhibit reveals the push and
pull of New and Old Worlds in Sendak's work and shows how Sendak's
artistic journey has led him deeper into his own family's history and
his Jewish identity.

2. Emma Lazarus: Voice of Liberty, Voice of Conscience
In this exhibit, a vital woman is brought to life in all her
fascinating complexity. Viewers see Lazarus's place in history as a
poet, an activist and a prophet of the world we live in today. The
exhibit traces her life, intellectual development, work and lasting influence.

3. A Fine Romance: Jewish Songwriters, American Songs, 1910-1965
Illustrated with colorful posters from Broadway shows and photographs
of composers, singers and the casts of hit musicals and films, this
exhibit highlights the lives and works of Irving Berlin, George and
Ira Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern and a host of other Jewish
songwriters who wove the American songbook deep into the fabric of
American culture.

Successful applicants will host one traveling exhibition for a
six-week period between April 2011 and February 2012 and receive
programming and technical support from the ALA Public Programs
Office. Participating libraries are expected to present at least two
free public programs for adults on themes related to the exhibitions.
All showings of the exhibition must be free and open to the public.
Each of the exhibits requires at least 200 square feet of display space.

More information about the exhibitions, including guidelines and the
online application, is available atwww.ala.org/jewishartists. With
questions, contact the ALA Public Programs Office at publicprogr...@ala.org.

[ha-Safran]: Doing a head count

2010-11-03 Thread Heidi Estrin
Hi everyone. Today is the day I have chosen at my own library to
conduct Library Snapshot Day. I've gotten some really interesting
comments from patrons and teachers (they write them for me on little
paper hearts). I've also been getting a good headcount, with lots of
story times for preschoolers, religious school classes, meetings
being held in the room, and plain old patrons – they're all building
up my number nicely!

I just wanted to encourage each of you to choose a day and do a
headcount, even if you don't do anything else for Library Snapshot
Day. Even if it's a rough estimate, it's helpful. We just want to end
up with a wonderful aggregate number so that we can say something
along the lines of on a single day in November, x number of people
made use of their Jewish libraries and have that number be something
impressive! Technically, it won't be all on the same single day, but
it averages out and creates a broad general picture of what AJL
libraries have to offer.

Be sure to email your head count number (and/or anything else about
your Library Snapshot Day) t...@jewishlibraries.org.

Thanks for your help, everyone.

[ha-Safran]: Photos on Library Snapshot Day

2010-10-26 Thread Heidi Estrin
I hope that many of you will be participating in Library Snapshot
Day, our advocacy campaign, by choosing any day between now and
mid-November to take a snapshot of your library's activities! As
we've described before, on your chosen day we'd like you to get a
headcount of library users, gather comments and feedback, and take pictures.

The question has been raised about whether we need permission to use
photos of patrons, especially children. If you are able to get
permission for AJL to use your photos in our newsletter or on our
website and blog, that would be wonderful! If your patrons prefer
that their photos not be published, that's fine too – we'd still be
interested in receiving them as internal evidence of the success of
Library Snapshot Day even if we can't share them. And of course, any
pictures you take would make a wonderful library display or local
advocacy tool for you at your home base. So in summary, please take
pictures no matter what! And when you send them to
p...@jewishlibraries.org, please let us know whether or not it's all
right to use the photos in the AJL Newsletter or on the website and blog.

Thanks, everyone! Looking forward to a wonderful Library Snapshot Day!

[ha-Safran]: Call for proposals: RUSA online learning

2010-10-20 Thread Heidi Estrin
The Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) invites interested
instructors and presenters to submit proposals for online
professional development courses and webinars to be offered starting
in early 2011.

RUSA currently offers several online courses in the areas of
reference and readers advisory, and is looking to expand its
available course topics, and also include webinars among its
offerings. Topics of particular interest include skills for assisting
patrons with job searches, collection development and introductory
reference and user services skills. There is also significant
interest in offering online learning opportunities that go more
in-depth with business reference skills as a follow-up to the
consistently sold out Business Reference 101 course currently offered by RUSA.

Additional topics for online learning proposals might include but are
not limited to company and industry research; international business;
small businesses; entrepreneurship; consumer demographics;
fundamentals of reference; providing reference in virtual libraries;
providing reference in the one-person library; reference services in
church and synagogue libraries; customer service fundamentals for
reference staff; reference service fundamentals for embedded
librarians; marketing the library and reference services; government
documents fundamentals for reference librarians; legal reference for
non-law librarians.

More information about how to submit proposals is available at the RUSA blog:

[ha-Safran]: Interview on Jewish Middle Grade Books

2010-10-18 Thread Heidi Estrin
From the Mixed Up Files of Middle Grade Authors is a blog about
literature for kids around ages 8-12, kids who are beyond picture
books but not ready for YA lit. It is run by about 30 different
authors, who take turns writing articles for it. One of those authors
is Laurel Snyder, whose new picture book you may have heard of
(Baxter, The Pig Who Wanted to Be Kosher). Laurel asked me to answer
a few questions about Jewish middle-grade lit, and this interview is
the result. It was posted on the evening of Oct. 12 and is already
getting a good response in the blogosphere. I thought you might like
to read it! It's at

[ha-Safran]: Book on Akeda

2010-10-05 Thread Heidi Estrin
(Forwarding a message received from Alice Porter at Libertary about a
new book. -- Heidi Estrin)

I'm looking for guidance in connecting a book with synagogue-affiliated
Torah study and book groups.

The book is *The First Father Abraham* by Henry Abramovtch. The author
is a Hebrew scholar, anthropologist, and Jungian analyst, and he
mobilizes this multidisciplinary background to dig deeply into the
biblical story, studying Abraham's development and interaction with G-d
using themes such as family dynamics and the ethics of survival. This is
a scholarly but accessible book, and the author has written a new
introduction for the Libertary edition.

The entire book is available to read online at:
http://libertary.com/book/the-first-father-abraham. For those who wish
to read a bound copy, we have published a paperback version as well.
(Please see the attached press release.)

In addition to presenting entire books to read free online, Libertary
drives traffic to our books from other websites and blogs and supports
discussion forums for our books.

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release Contact: Alice Porter
(edi...@libertarty.com) (206) 383-2109

New from Libertary:
The First Father Abraham by Henry Abramovitch

What manner of parent was Abraham, first patriarch of the Hebrew Bible
and the shared ancestor of Jews, Christians, and Muslims? What father
would be willing to murder his much-beloved son, as described in the
still-shocking story of the binding of Issac in Genesis? What value
could anyone hold, more powerful than love for one's child, that would
lead to this grossest violatioon of the human order?

These are questions not just for the biblical scholar but also for the
psychologist and cultural anthropologist. Henry Abramovitch, author of
The First Father Abraham (Libertary Editions 2010) is all three, and he
brings to this analysis a case study approach and themes such as the
psycholoogy of birth order, the ethics of survival, and the symptoms of
post-traumatic stress disorder. Abramovitch also mines deeply into the
Hebrew text to extract the true context of Abraham's personal and
spiritual development to reveal how Abraham, the spiritual
revolutionary, having lost all...is given it all back again.

The First Father is invaluable study of family dynamics, faith, and
leadership, filled with deep religious and psychological insight.
Libertary is proud to issue the softcover edition of this book with a
new preface.
Praise for the book
Abramovitch's Abraham is not only a success; he is a tour de force.
-Rabbi James E. Ponet, Joseph Slifka Center for
Jewish Life at Yale
Online publication
The First Father Abraham is in print and ebook format. Libertary also
provides a public copy of the book for free reading online at
www.libertary.com. Available both in print and for free reading on the
web, as are all Libertary editions. Libertary is committed to creating
new ways for readers to experience and share books online.
About the author
Henry Hanoch Abramovitch is Associate Professor in the Department of
Medical Education and Behavioral Science, Sackler School of Medicine,
Tel Aviv University, and founding President of the Israel Institute of
Jungian Psychology.

[ha-Safran]: Lesson plans for Jewish kids books?

2010-08-30 Thread Heidi Estrin
The Department of Jewish Education at our local Federation asked me
if I could help them find book-related lesson plans for use with ages
8 and up. They're seeking a lesson based on a book that deals with
Judaic values, text, traditions, etc. The example they gave me was a
lesson plan from the PJ Library for Nachshon Who Was Afraid to Swim
(if you want to see this example, let me know and I'll send you the
PDF). It had discussion points, extension activities, suggested crafts, etc.

Does anybody have any lesson plans like this to share for ages 8 and
older? If so, please email me at he...@cbiboca.org.

Thanks,

[ha-Safran]: Heidi's Library Snapshot Day

2010-08-25 Thread Heidi Estrin
Hi everybody,

By now you've heard on Hasafran and on AJL's blog about Library
Snapshot Day, a fun way to bring positive attention to all our
libraries. I'm already planning my own Library Snapshot Day and I
wanted to tell you about it. I hope it will inspire you to plan
something too, because the whole thing only works if we get
participation from lots of people! The point of the project is to
generate big, impressive numbers about how much use Jewish libraries
are getting as a group, and then to use that info for advocacy. I
hope lots of AJL members will do it, because every participant will
make a difference.

So feel free to steal my ideas for how to celebrate Library Snapshot
Day, or come up with something completely different!

I'm planning to:

· Take pictures of people in the library all day. I'll offer
them props to make the pictures more fun, including puppets, funny
hats, giant books, and one of those funny standup cardboard pictures
you stick your face through (from the Upstart catalog). I might put
the pictures onto a private Flickr group and give them the password,
so they can access their pictures. I will certainly send the pictures
to AJL when I'm done!

· Give away library related tchotchkes to all visitors, and
offer special patriotic themed tchotchkes to anyone who comes in
wearing an I voted sticker (I'm doing this on November 2 which is
also election day). I'll get stuff from Upstart or Oriental Trading
Company for this.

· I'm going to order Upstart's name badge stickers that say
HELLO, my favorite book/author/character is or HELLO, I like to
read about and invite people to fill in the blanks and wear them. I
think they'll be good conversation starters.

· Serve refreshments, of course.

· Ask visitors to say something about the library, either by
writing on paper, or by letting me audio record (or video record) them.

· I am planning to create some kind of online guest book so
that people who can't make it to the library that day can still leave
the comments. I'm thinking of using Voicethread.com for this, which
allows commenters to type or use a microphone or webcam or phone to
leave their comments.

· I'm going to set up the game Lightning Librarian on my
computers and invite people to play it. It's a free online game at
http://resources.kaboose.com/games/lightning-librarian.html.

· I'm going to invite the local Jewish Journal to come take
pictures too on that date, and to do an article. I think the
national/local combination of the event will appeal to them.

When I told the senior staff about Library Snapshot Day they were
very enthusiastic. The rabbi asked me to have his secretary schedule
him to come into the library that day so he won't forget, and the
religious school principal scheduled classes to come in and have
their pictures taken. So it's already having a positive effect within
my own organization and it hasn't even happened yet!

If you're considering doing Library Snapshot Day, please let
everybody know. The more we can help each other plan, the better!

Hi. I am pleased to announce that my article about the importance of
Jewish libraries has been published in NewCAJE's inaugural issue of
The Jewish Educator at http://thejewisheducator.wordpress.com/. Look
for the third article down entitled The Beating Heart of Jewish Education.

Not to be pushy or anything, but if you find the article's reasoning
compelling, you might want to share it with your administrators as a
way to remind them of the importance of your own library.

[ha-Safran]: fill-in-the-blanks post-convention press release FOR YOU

2010-07-13 Thread Heidi Estrin
It was great seeing everyone at the convention in Seattle! As we've
done in the past, we are offering a fill-in-the-blanks generic press

release that attendees can use in their own communities. Please feel
free to change the text and use this however you want; we're

providing this press release to make your life easier but you are
welcome to customize or rewrite.

Attending convention is not only beneficial personally and
professionally, it is also a great way to draw attention to our own

libraries! Your attendance at convention shows the professional
attitude you take towards running your own library, and your

community should be proud of that.

If you do get into your local paper or newsletter, please let us know!

Best of luck,

Heidi Estrin

[ha-Safran]: Blogging the convention in Seattle

2010-06-22 Thread Heidi Estrin
This year we will be using AJL's Facebook page to blog the Seattle
Convention. That means we'll be posting comments, pictures, etc.
about the convention as it's happening
athttp://facebook.com/jewishlibraries. You do NOT have to join
Facebook in order to see this. Anybody can click on the address above
and view AJL's Facebook page.

If you DO use Facebook, please become a fan of the AJL Facebook page
by going to that same address and clicking the LIKE button. This will
ensure that AJL's status updates come to your wall, along with news
from your other Facebook friends.

Thanks! Let me know if you have any questions.

[ha-Safran]: Social Media session at convention

2010-06-16 Thread Heidi Estrin
At the Seattle convention, on Monday July 5, Diane Romm and I will be
presenting a session called AJL Social Media. We'll be addressing
the finer points of AJL's website, blog, podcast, etc., and also
discussing other social media sites of Jewish literary interest.

If this is a topic that interests you, and you think you might attend
our session, I've got a little preview for you. You may remember last
convention's social media session with podcaster Mark Blevis, which
inspired me to expand upon the topic on my podcast, The Book of Life.
I'd like to invite you to go back and listen to those episodes NOW,
as they make great background material for what we'll be discussing
at our Seattle session!

Please visit The Book of Life and listen to the 4-part Why Be
Social? series of episodes. You can find all four here:
http://jewishbooks.blogspot.com/2009/08/why-be-social-whole-megillah.html.
Or you can look up the four individual postings, which each include
links to extra materials and sometimes bonus video as well. Listening
to this short series will give you a good grounding in Jewish social
media and why it's important. It's certainly not required for
attending our session, but I think it would help you get more out of it.

Looking forward to seeing you in Seattle!

Heidi Estrin

[ha-Safran]: Louisiana Jewish Story Podcasted

2010-06-01 Thread Heidi Estrin
The Book of Life podcast's newest episode is now available at
http://jewishbooks.blogspot.com/2010/06/when-hurricane-came-to-new-orleans.html.

This interview turns out to be unfortunately timely, with Louisiana
so much in the spotlight right now due to the Gulf of Mexico oil
spill. Last summer, when we all thought Hurricane Katrina was the
worst thing that could happen to New Orleans, I interviewed Nachama
Liss-Levinson, author of the 2009 Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award
winning title When the Hurricane Came to New Orleans. Being
unpublished (thus a Manuscript Award winner), you can't read it
yet. But I'm sure after hearing from awards chair Aileen Grossberg
and from Nechama herself, you will want to! (Sorry for any angst
caused by this situation!)

[ha-Safran]: Florida AJL Event: Klez4Kids

2010-02-21 Thread Heidi Estrin
For any of you who live in Florida, who have friends/relatives in
Florida, or will be visiting Florida in March: please come to this
klezmer music event based on a Jewish children's book, co-sponsored
by South Florida AJL! And please tell all your Floridian friends!

Klez4Kids: The Kugel Valley Klezmer Band
Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 3PM
Florida Atlantic University's Wimberley Library, 5th Floor
Tickets $9/Adult, Free tickets for kids under 12, Buy tickets and see
the whole festival schedule at http://www.fauevents.com/kulturfest.html

Fun for the whole family! Klez4Kidz features a dramatic reading, live
music and projected illustrations from the critically-acclaimed
children's book, The Kugel Valley Klezmer Band by Joan Betty Stuchner
(http://joanbettystuchner.blogspot.com). A little girl named Shira
loves the fiddle, but is she good enough to play with her papa's
band? Join narrator Riva Ginsburg and members of Klezmer Company
Orchestra (http://www.klezmercompany.com/) as they bring the charming
story to life. Bring your blankets to sit on the floor, and get ready
to dance to the musical interludes!

This is the second year that SFAJL has helped FAU to plan a
children's literary/klezmer event for their Jewish Kultur Festival.
In 2009, the Klezmer Company Orchestra brought to life the book
Mendel's Accordian by Heidi Smith Hyde. This year's performance, at a
new, more convenient time, promises to be even better!

This event is co-sponsored by the South Florida Association of Jewish
Libraries, www.sfajl.org.

[ha-Safran]: two new episodes of The Book of Life

2009-12-06 Thread Heidi Estrin
This summer at the Podcasters Across Borders conference, I nabbed a
couple of book-related interviews for The Book of Life. Unlike most
Book of Life content, there's nothing Jewish about these interviews,
but I was awfully excited to meet other book geeks at a non-book
conference! These are extremely creative people, so I'm sure you will
enjoy hearing about their many projects to promote literature, and to
involve the community in the creation, support, and reviewing of books!

Earlier this fall I posted the first in this 3-part Podcasters Across
Borders series. That first interview, posted October 20, was with
Connie Crosby. These two new interviews with Hugh McGuire and Alexa
Clark complete the series. Enjoy! And let me know what you think via
the new Book of Life listener feedback line at 561-206-2473!

[ha-Safran]: Please help Florida Kids Learn About Winter

2009-11-16 Thread Heidi Estrin
As you guys know, I am the school librarian computer teacher for a
synagogue preschool in Boca Raton, Florida. Each year at our school,
our curriculum includes a winter unit and we usually emphasize
themes of cold, snowy weather, even though that is not what we
experience here in South Florida.

I grew up in Pennsylvania, so I understand the tendency to assume
that the northern four seasons are Real Weather and that everything
else is just a variation. But that's not true, and it's not fair to
teach kids in Florida that their winter experience (dry and sunny) is
not valid. So I had an idea for a way to show how different winter
can be in different places. I've created an interactive blog where
everyone can share pictures (and video and audio) of their own local
winter experience.

I am inviting YOU to show off YOUR winter weather, to help my
students learn that winter can mean snow, rain, or sunshine; cold or
warm; it can even mean December or July depending on which hemisphere
you live in. Please email a picture of your typical winter weather
top...@winterweather.posterous.com to share it with the rest of us.
If you want, you can even email a video or an audio file! I've listed
a few guidelines below to help you.

GUIDELINES

* Photos, videos, and audio recordings showing off winter weather are
all accepted - just attach the file to your email message and send it
to p...@winterweather.posterous.com.
* In your email message, please tell us your location, who are the
people in the picture (if there are any people), and a little about
what your typical winter weather is like.
* Pictures can be from your home area or from a vacation, as long as
it's winter.
* Pictures can be new or from a previous winter.
* To visit the Winter Weather website and see the pictures others
have sent, visithttp://winterweather.posterous.com.

Thanks to everybody for helping me to expand the world of my
students! And please feel free to pass this message along to your
friends, especially if they live in really interesting places. Happy Winter!

Love, Heidi

[ha-Safran]: Please send healing vibes to Mark Blevis's family

2009-10-19 Thread Heidi Estrin
Many AJL-ers met Mark Blevis at the AJL convention in Chicago where
he gave a wonderful presentation on social media. You all know he's a
fun, nice, energetic guy who was thrilled to help with our
convention. Now it's time for us to give back.

Mark's wife Andrea has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. Mark,
in his creative way, is reaching out to the wider community to help
Andrea by gathering positive vibes for her. If you enjoyed meeting
Mark, or if you just want to do a mitzvah, please consider calling
and leaving a voice message to help Andrea with her healing. The
deadline is Wednesday October 21.

Here's the original request from Mark. Thanks, everyone. -- Heidi Estrin

Andrea, my wife and partner in the Just One More Book!! children's
book podcast, was diagnosed with breast cancer on October 6. Her
mastectomy has been scheduled for October 26 and she will begin chemo
6 weeks after the surgery.
I would be grateful if you could lend your voice and energy to the
chorus of good wishes in the form of a voice mail message identifying
yourself and sending good vibes and wishes to Andrea for a speedy
recovery (please address Andrea in the first person for the best
effect of the audio collage). You can be as creative as you would
like to be (some people have recited poems and recorded kisses). I'm
going to gather all of the messages I receive and edit them together
and have it ready for Andrea to listen to after her surgery.

Our voice hotline is 206-350-6487. The more positive vibes we can
get, the better.

Thanks so much!

Sincerely,

Mark

[ha-Safran]: Running for My Life podcast

2009-10-16 Thread Heidi Estrin
Running for My Life by Ann Gonzales is the hopeful and healing story
of a teenaged girl who struggles with PTSD as a result of living with
a mentally ill mother. Gonzales joins Heidi Estrin on The Book of
Life to talk about her own mom and her own PTSD, about NaNoWriMo, and
about her journey to becoming a writer. Running for My Life boasts
universal rather than Jewish content, and Ann became a Book of Life
guest by placing the highest bid in the Bridget Zinn Auction, which
raised money to assist librarian/author Bridget Zinn with her cancer
treatments.
